Best Milan tours

1.  milan hop-on hop-off bus tour.

Milan hop-on hop-off bus tour

For those who want to explore Milan at their own pace, and with an element of flexibility, the Hop-On Hop-Off approach is a great choice. The company’s open-top double-decker takes you past sights including the Duomo, the La Scala opera house and Il Cenacolo Vinciano. Simply climb on and alight as you wish.

2.  Skip-the-line Duomo and rooftop guided tour

Skip-the-line Duomo and rooftop guided tour

Not one for queuing? This two-part guided tour takes you to around Milan’s magnificent cathedral, up to its summit, and down into its subterranean crypt – without having to wait in line with all the other sightseers. Great for the impatient.

3.  Skip-the-line Leonardo da Vinci walking tour

Skip-the-line Leonardo da Vinci walking tour

Another queue-jumper tour, this one takes you into the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a Unesco-listed site that contains the ‘Last Supper’ mural by Leonardo da Vinci, who lived in Milan for some time. There’s also his ‘Atlantic Codex’ to see: a frankly mind-boggling compedium of some of the Renaissance man’s scientific drawings and writings. Disclaimer: you’ll probably come out feeling like a real under-achiever.

4.  La Scala theatre and museum tour

La Scala theatre and museum tour

This tour takes you around one of the most famous opera houses in the world, the Teatro alla Scala, and its adjoining museum. This is a chance to wander around a sumptuous eighteenth-century institution, and look over a rich collection of costumes, painted portraits and musical instruments.

5.  Lake Como day trip

Lake Como day trip

Beautiful, sweeping and set against a backdrop of mountains, Lake Como is one of the true great natural wonders of Italy, and a popular tourist area. This tour takes you through the streets of Como city, out on the waters over to Bellagio Island and up the funicular to the town of Brunate.

6.  Walking tour of Brera

Walking tour of Brera

An essential tour if you’ve got Italian cucina on your mind. This one sends you on a journey through the district of Brera and to six different locations where you can sample traditional Milanese dishes, artisanal beer and other delicious victuals. Best loosen your belt before you embark!

7.  Evening cooking lesson with dinner

Evening cooking lesson with dinner

Or maybe you want to have a crack at making your own Italian grub? This tour takes you into a genuine Milanese home – in her kitchen, Aurora will teach you how to make handmade pasta, regional meat dishes and desserts including canoli, tiramisu and pannacotta. Naturally, you get to try your efforts.

8.  Lake Maggiore day trip

Lake Maggiore day trip

Another water-based tour, this time out to the beautiful Maggiore, in what the organisers describe as ‘Italy’s Lake District’. (We can’t help thinking the weather will be a lot more hospitable here.) You’ll also get the chance to explore the quaint lakeside village of Stresa and the Borromean Islands.

9.  Skyscrapers guided walking tour

Skyscrapers guided walking tour

Not just a centre of gorgeous Renaissance buildings, Milan is also home to some astounding contemporary architecture. This three-hour tour focuses on the city’s dazzling skyscrapers, from the award-winning twin Bosco Verticale buildings to the UniCredit Tower in Piazza Gae Aulenti.

10.  Milan in one day: Last Supper, Milan Duomo and walking tour

The Last Supper

What's unique about da Vinci's famous mural is that it's not hanging in some famous museum filled with other masterpieces, but it's painted directly onto the wall in the unassuming Santa Maria delle Grazie church. It's a solemn and private space for a sacred painting. This makes the experience even more memorable and exclusive since only a small number of tourists have access each day, which is essential for preserving this fragile art.

The next-best benefit—aside from the painting itself—is that your expert guide can point out the most important parts of the masterpiece and tell of the folklore, myths, secrets, and facts that surround Last Supper . This is important, since time in front of the painting is limited to 15 minutes per group, with less than 30 people allowed in the room at any one time. A few helpful pointers will make sure you don't miss a thing about one of the world's most famous artworks.

* Please make sure to provide your full names and birthdates upon booking and bring a legal identification, otherwise security will not grant you access.

Walking Tour of Milan

Upon leaving the Santa Maria delle Grazie, you'll head towards the city center with your guide to see one of the world’s most historic and opulent malls: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. You'll be starry-eyed here as you see the famous shops of Gucci, Versace, Prada, and many more household names in a building that feels more like a baroque palace than a mall. Welcome to the fashion heartland of Milan!

After exploring the mall and strolling past beautiful Sforza Castle and La Scala opera house, your guide will lead you through the small but historic Brera district and the courtyard of the Brera Gallery. Known as the city's artistic and cultural center—with an upmarket yet bohemian feel—this is also home to many of Milan's most famous residents. Learn their secrets from your guide!

Milan’s Duomo

The world-famous Duomo in Milan is one of the largest cathedrals in the world and the largest in Italy. There's a lot to see here, so you can skip the line and spend your time looking around instead of waiting around. Milan’s cathedral is filled with historic artworks, incredible architectural features, and ancient crypts, as well as a fascinating archaeological area to explore. Follow along with your guide who'll keep you enthralled with the 600-year history of its construction, troubles, and the historic figures who once walked the cathedral's corridors.

Tour description

See leonardo da vinci's the last supper with guaranteed skip-the-line access..

Visiting The Last Supper is a complicated affair. Located on a wall inside a convent, the mural was long neglected, leading to some damage that authorities are now attempting to undo. As a result, limits have been set on visitors. Only 30 people are allowed inside the climate-controlled room at any time, and they may only stay for 15 minutes—after waiting in an air-locked room beforehand. This has made Last Supper tickets highly sought after, to say the least! But with this Duomo and Last Supper tour, you don't have to worry about securing tickets in advance—we've taken care of that for you.

With pre-reserved, skip-the-line access, you're guaranteed to visit The Last Supper on our Best of Milan tour. You’ll do so with a highly knowledgeable guide at hand to help you get the most from this special visit. They'll give you a full rundown on the painting before you enter, so you’re ready to make the most of your time.

As you move around the room with your guide and small group, admiring its incredible depth and perspective, you'll learn about the characters in the painting and how Leonardo da Vinci became one of the most renowned artistic masters in history. You may only see this masterpiece once in your lifetime (particularly since it’s disintegrating at such an alarming rate)—so this guided visit will ensure you get the most of this opportunity.

Enjoy the incredible architecture of the Milan Duomo as your guide points out hidden details.

After our allocated time at the painting is up, our Duomo and Last Supper tour takes to the streets of Milan. You'll weave your way through the city center and see how Milan evolved from a Roman settlement to a Medieval trading hub and later, to the fashion capital of the world it is today.

The last stop of the day is a special one: the Duomo. The largest church in Italy, it took almost six centuries to complete, but the final result was worth every moment.

Your guide will teach you about the history of this great structure from the Duomo square, pointing out different architectural features and characters you may not have noticed on your own. Finally, they'll take you inside to learn more about the space up close.

Our Best of Milan Duomo and Last Supper Tour shines a light on those special places that make Milan a city like no other. With a small group of only 15 people or fewer throughout, your experience will be intimate, while your local tour guide will be easy to chat with.

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

Happy clients, satisfied requests, your time in milan, project title, testimonials.

Our guide was fantastic and passionate about the city. The tour was very informative and significantly more enjoyable than being stuck in a large group. Plenty of opportunity to ask questions and stories about things I would have walked past. The last supper was the highlight of the tour.

We had our five year-old with us, so I asked them to customize the tour so it would be as kid-friendly as possible. We were paired up with a tour guide who was exceptionally well-educated and clearly knew much about art, art history, architecture and Milan in general. Would absolutely recommend Milan Day Tours to any of my friends who are going to the city.

Our experience with Milan Day Tours was fabulous from start to finish. Elisa was extremely helpful behind the scenes with getting our tour and car transfer set up, and had lots of good suggestions for our one day stop in Milan. This was money very well spent and a terrific way to see the highlights of a large city in a fairly brief amount of time.

Our guide was a fantastic tour guide for our 3 hour tour of Milan. He was incredibly informative, engaging and considerate - he bought much of Milan to life! We learnt so much that the tour seems to go so quickly We loved this tour and we loved Milan. Milan quickly has become one of our favorite cities and this tour helped to make it so.

Milan holidays

A city where style meets commerce with great panache – life is fast-paced and future-focussed. Not quite as steeped in history as some Italian cities, but Milan's awash with prized cultural sights. Michelin-starred chefs aren't afraid to add a dash of experimentation to the classic culinary cannon, and sharply attired locals aren’t afraid to match the glitzy marble-decked surroundings. Remember, this was the home turf of Leonardo da Vinci after all.

Mesmerising milan.

Start out by admiring the spectacular Gothic Duomo cathedral, a colossal confection complete with 3,500 statues and 135 spires. Take in the unrivalled views from the rooftop, but don’t overlook the fascinating maze of tunnels and crumbling ruins found within. Catch sight of the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie and feast your eyes on DaVinci’s Last Supper at The Pinacoteca di Brera. For a complete contrast to these historical treasures, peer up at Italy’s tallest skyscraper, the UniCredit building, and clock the modern street art around Porta Garibaldi.

To witness a shopping arcade on a grand scale, check out the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, known as ‘Milan’s drawing room'. Wander around the Golden Quadrilateral, one of the world’s most exclusive stretches of retail real estate home to countless fashion brands and upscale jewellers. Make time to call in at some of the city’s swish family-run ateliers too. At places like the legendary N.H Sartoria you can get every conceivable component of your wardrobe customised, from ties to shirt cuffs. Then pause for a spritz and a free snack at Aperitivo hour – this is an essential tradition the Milanese take particularly seriously, so who are we to argue? Book your flights to Milan and discover a city alive with possibilities.

Milan holiday FAQs

  • Take in the fever pitch excitement of an Italian football match at the San Siro Stadium. Italy’s largest stadium is shared by both of the city’s topflight clubs, AC Milan and Inter Milan. It’s a fine way to mix it with the passionate locals. On non-match days you can take a tour of the stadium and its museum which celebrates both clubs’ accolades at national and international level.
  • Play around in the laboratories of the Leonardo DaVinci National Museum of Science and Technology, Italy’s largest science museum. The exhibits here are fun and interactive, encompassing some 15,000 items covering DaVinci’s inventions, alongside vast hangars housing steam trains, planes and Italy’s first submarine, the Enrico Toti.
  • Be wowed at the Prada Foundation. This ground-breaking museum is housed in an old gin distillery reimagined by architect Rem Koolhaas, in collaboration with Miuccia Prada. The gallery showcases works by Anish Kapoor, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Vezzoli and Nathalie Djurberg across ten buildings that make the most of their visual impact. Make time also for an espresso in the retro-themed café Bar Luce, which was designed by none other than filmmaker Wes Anderson.
  • Sprawling Monumental Cemetery is packed with so many remarkable sculptures, obelisks and temples that it’s widely considered an open-air museum. Look out for the sobering steel and marble monument to Milan’s victims of WWII concentration camps. The great and the good are buried here, including the likes of writer Alessandro Manzoni, artist Francesco Hayez and footballer Giuseppe Meazza.
  • Experience a quirkier side to Milan with a guided tour of the Silent Quadrilateral. This quiet neighbourhood is home to some stunning Liberty buildings with mosaics, spooky statues, secret gardens swarming with flamingos and intriguing architecture that includes a giant, ear-shaped doorbell and a mansion that resembles a bizarre hybrid of a castle and a space shuttle.
  • Milan is not exactly known for its pocket pleasing prowess but there are a few good value hotels to uncover in the city if you know where to look. The Grand Barone Di Sassj is a reliable budget option a few blocks from the Sesto Rondo Metro stop. Facilities here include a terrace bar and a choice of two restaurants. The centrally located Novotel Milano Nord Ca Granda near Ca Grande Metro Station is another good bet. Guests here can make good use of the swimming pool and fitness centre after a busy day’s sightseeing.
  • Right next door to the Duomo the Art Deco hotel The Gray offers a pleasing mix of high tech in-room gadgetry and inviting ambience. Indulge in design-led cuisine in its cool restaurant Le Noir and then cosy up on a canopied sofa with a cocktail on its swish roof terrace. Or just a few minutes away, the calming Armani Hotel Milano awaits, with rooms and suites personally overseen by Giorgio Armani himself. The entire eighth floor is dedicated to wellness and beauty at the panoramic Armani/Spa, while the seventh is devoted to fine dining and relaxed imbibing. Located near the exclusive boutiques of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II the NH Collection Milano President offers rooms complete with Italian designer furniture and upscale silver and white décor. The buffet breakfast here is extensive and dinner in the Verziere Restaurant is not to be missed. Hotel Viu Milan does not stint on style. This sleek contemporary luxury hotel comes with rooms kitted out by leading designer Molteni&C. Hang out in the softly-lit bar and sample the divine creations of chef Giancarlo Morelli in either of its wood-panelled restaurants. You can also splash about in Milan’s first rooftop pool.
  • You’ll soon see that Milan is ideally situated to explore this beautiful and varied region.
  • Nestled at the foot of the Alps, the dreamy shores of Lake Como lie just north of Milan. Lake Como’s idyllic lakeside villages, historic waterfront villas and sweeping alpine views have beckoned travellers for centuries, making it one of north Italy’s most prestigious holiday destinations. On Lake Como holidays, you can explore the pastel-hued towns by boat, hike the pine-swathed mountains and experience fine dining along the waterfront. Witness the enchanting beauty of Nesso, sip local wine on Menaggio’s pretty promenade, take in spectacular mountain vistas from Cadenabbia and visit Tremezzo, where you’ll find one of Lake Como’s loveliest villas and Mediterranean gardens bursting with colour.
  • Set between the cities of Milan and Venice, Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake. Its traditional towns and villages overlook crystal-clear waters, framed by the breathtaking peaks of the Dolomites. Sirmione sits on the southern shore of Lake Garda, famed for its thermal baths and medieval castle, as does Desenzano, which offers pebbly beaches and charming waterfront cafes. You can explore the smaller villages around the lake via boat or ferry or take up a plethora of water sports. To the north, you can hike dramatic snow-capped mountains and stay in the quieter towns of Limone Sul Garda, Malcesine and Torbole.
  • Lake Maggiore stretches along the southern side of the Italian alps, bordering Switzerland. Home to spectacular walking and mountain biking trails, Lake Maggiore is also a popular skiing destination in the winter. The serene shores here are dotted with bustling towns, including lively Stresa which attracts families, and neighbouring Baveno, which has a charming medieval centre. From Stresa, you can hop on a boat to the Borromean island of Isola Bella to explore the impressive baroque palace, terraced botanical gardens and traditional restaurants. The north shores of Lake Maggiore maintain a more authentic feel, especially in the peaceful lakeside villages of Cannero, Carmine and Cannobio.
  • The town of Livigno is a bustling ski resort nestled in the Italian Alps close to the Swiss border. It offers 62 square miles of skiable terrain spread across 71 miles of pristine slopes. All abilities are catered for here with 12 black, 27 red and 39 blue runs. Get around the resort with a free shuttle bus or make use of the well-maintained facilities including six gondolas, 12 ski lifts and 14 chair lifts. Its high altitude means you can rely on a long season here and with a third of its runs being blue it’s especially accommodating for learners. Livigno’s apres-ski scene is lively and a charming village-like atmosphere prevails. There are numerous bars, cafes, restaurants and shops where you can take advantage of duty free shopping.
