Magical Journey to North India “Moksha”

Magical Journey to North India “Moksha”

Mar 8, 2016

For many years, Magical Journey International has offered their signature “Rebirth in North India, Moksha” journey. Carol and Mark traveled with their guests for the most transformative Indian experience, and Carolina Rogoll writes of hers on the Huffpost Travel Blog

“How Visiting India Makes Your Feel Alive Again”

By Carolina Rogoll January 25, 2016.

Magical Journey Woman

L ittle did I know, I was about to discover the magic of raw, open life in a majestic and mythic country– one capable of shaking what is rock solid inside you. Contrary to what I expected, India is not a country you see, it is a country you feel. You have no choice (yes, it will be uncomfortable at times) but to get out of your hard shell of western comforts and open up. In only 1 visit, this is all what India did for me:

magical india journey address

*Awakened my physical senses:  It only took a few minutes after leaving the airport for the country to stimulate all my senses. Heavy traffic quickly generated by cars, bikes, rickshaws, and cows– make for quite visual, loud and somehow suffocating yet happy welcome. When visiting temples, images of goddesses, gurus, symbols and statues– capture your eyes. India is alive for sure. Everyone seems to makes their own music with their honk. Bell sounds are abundant. I got to touch many floors barefoot (temples actually require you to do so as a form of respect). It’s humbling and grounding to walk among others barefoot. Seems like we are all pilgrims in life following the smell of incense toward sacred grounds. The smell of Chai and spices move your stomach. Your tongue and mouth are up for a party every day. In one day, India makes you wonder if you have been just living numb all your life. It feels very human to reclaim your senses. I thank India for kick-starting all of mine again.

Magical Journey Candles

* Pointed out mental divides. I participated in the famous “changing of the guard” ceremony at the Waga India-Pakistan border. After several security checks, you get to watch the ceremony seating in an open air stage. I stayed on the Indian side and just beyond a small gate, I could see the same ceremony taking place on the Pakistani side. Instead of red hats on the Indian side, the Pakistani soldiers wore black. Instead of women and men sitting together in India, on the Pakistani side, men and women in their abayas were sitting in different sections. Both ceremonies seemed beautifully animated in their own respective way. I kept waiting for the ceremonies to merge, which never happened. I very much respect the patriotism and the uniqueness of each culture I witnessed and in this case it was very positive exchange. I wondered the whole time however how a simple gate could make the same experience so different and separated. Country borders are a serious thing, but how many unnecessary mental divides do we create in our own head? How many great opportunities do we miss because of this? I am grateful for this lesson of the limitation of our mental divides.

magical india journey address

* Explained Karma. In the west we use Karma as an expression of destiny or cause, however, in India it’s almost a rule of life. My great Magical Journey guide explained that “Karma is not a business, not a formality, it is a way of life.” In every action you take, you are supposed to put your best intention and then let go of what will happen– even up to afterlife. You just do your part, and you are better off when that deed is a good one. If you expect an immediate reward it would be a business, which it is clearly not. I felt vividly this acceptance of life’s unfolding and the humble approach to every day’s tasks in the people I met. I find this relationship with uncertainty (which is what every day in India feels like) quite remarkable. I still have much to learn.

Even in one visit, this magical country has the ability to change one’s life perspective. It shakes your beliefs and touches all your senses and you have no choice but to feel truly alive. So, I hope you don’t wait as long as I did to give India a try. Be ready to be shaken to the core for a refreshing awakening!

After breakfast we will take a tour through Delhi as we venture toward our first stop, the 17th century Old Delhi. We begin exploring Old Delhi by visiting the Jama Mosque, a royal mosque built by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan in 1656. We then ride a bicycle rickshaw through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk, the spine of Old Delhi that houses the spice market and jewelers lane. After that we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Red Fort. Next, we will visit Humayun’s tomb. Emperor Humayun was the second Mughal Emperor of India. The tomb was built by his widow, Biga Begum (Hajji Begum), in 1569-70, 14 years after his death, at a cost of 1.5 million rupees. The tomb was later used for the burial of various members of the ruling family and contains some 150 graves. It has aptly been described as the ‘necropolis of the Mughal dynasty’.

After lunch we visit the house of Mahatma Gandhi, a place where Mr. Gandhi’s epic life ended on January 30th, 1948. Mahatma Gandhi lived in this house from September 9th, 1947 until his death and the house is home to many treasures and memorial items from the last 144 days of his life. The House was acquired by the Government of India in 1971 and was converted into a National Memorial of Gandhi, “Father of the Nation” and was opened to the public on August 15, 1973. As you walk through Gandhi’s home it’s as though you feel the majesty of his presence still there, a truly fascinating and memorable step back in time that will leave you with a quiet stillness but lifted spirit. The building and the landscape have been preserved to the lush beauty that filled the eyes of the beloved teacher and you will be impressed as you stroll the grounds. Before heading to our hotel, we will see the war memorial India Gate as well as the impressive grounds of the presidential palace.

In the evening enjoy your welcome dinner in your hotel.

After breakfast we will drive for about 4 hours to Agra, a city which is famous for being home to the Taj Mahal. Arrive and check in at your hotel.

In the late afternoon witness the blue and white backdrop of the Taj Mahal transform as the sun slowly casts a honey hued canvas onto the iconic monument of love as it seemingly carmelizes into dusk. Built between 1631 and 1648, the Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim architecture in India and is universally one of the most admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage. This most famous monument of love was built by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Optional: In the early evening you have the opportunity to enjoy the The Love Story of The Taj Mahal, Live Play/Musical Performance: This musical depicts the saga of love between Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Feel the sorrow of Shah Jahan as he holds his beloved wife Mumtaz as she takes her last breathe, thus, crippling his heart forever but is the impetus for Shah Jahan to build the magnificent Taj Mahal. The lavish lifestyle of the Mughal era in the 16th century and the hardships of the artisans who worked for 22 years to create the breathtaking monument are portrayed in this whimsical drama of love, sorrow, and devotion. Optional CAD $50.00 per person

Incredible India really lived up to its name!  There were many hilites: Our first time riding a camel (and probably the last!)  Helen got thrown off part way up but only a bruised bum.  A couple rides in a camel cart was interesting and much safer.  Seeing a leopard quite close after it had recently killed a cow, and later seeing it in the rocks washing its face (just like a cat).  Of course, the Taj Mahal at about 8.30 AM in a good light after the early fog had disappeared. Visits to a craft village and a farm family.  The many forts and palaces from the past.   Our hotels were very good; we were upgraded a couple times so that they could give us twin beds.   Our guide was competent and dealt with the challenges of India quite well.  The money problem didn't affect us as we used our 500 rupee notes with vendors.  One day I hope to get back to India, perhaps in the northeast with Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal.  Thanks for giving us the opportunity to see this fascinating country.

Thank you for your email requesting our comments on our recent trip to India. Overall, our impression is strongly favourable. We thought that the expedition was well organized, ran smoothly and represented good value. The hotels at which we stayed and the restaurants at which we ate were uniformly excellent. The transportation was comfortable and the sights we saw were interesting. Our guide was well-informed and gave interesting commentaries as well as ensuring that all the arrangements ran smoothly. We would (and have) recommend your company to friends. We would therefore conclude by thanking you for a job well done.

03 MAR, 2018: The trip was very interesting and educational. We appreciated the opportunity to see a broad spectrum of life in India and particularly the countryside and life in the villages. The accommodations and the food were excellent. And the weather couldn’t have been any better. The guide for our tour, Yajur, had a vast array of knowledge which he pleasantly and willingly passed on. He answered in great detail the questions our group had and had a vast and varied knowledge of India, its culture and history and provided the information freely and willingly. The entire group got on well together and appreciated the active agenda provided. The bus provided (with driver Lalit and assistant Ranjit) was excellent and fit the size of the group well – we appreciated the fact that we were not jammed in as sardines. And we really appreciated going off the main roads and into interior portions of the country. The trip and the experience have certainly whetted our appetite to revisit the country and see different aspects. Thanks to you, Nadir and Mansoor.

The whole tour was superb; everything went very smoothly, the choice of sites was perfect, the hotels were excellent, well-supplied and clean, the bus was comfortable, the driver, Praveen (?) and water wallah, Shambo, were friendly, competent and very amenable. Our guide was wonderful at keeping all 22 of us happy, thanks to his ability to listen, adapt, add and subtract as necessary. Speaking of Rajeev, a 5+ star guide! What a calm, patient, well-informed, flexible, attentive person to travel with! He gave us time to explore when desired, tweaked things where necessary and rolled with the punches that a bunch of bossy adults used to having their own way could throw him. He made us feel safe and special throughout the trip, whether we were crossing a road, feeding cows, riding an elephant or negotiating prices, all this with an unfailing sense of humour. There was not one glitch in our bus arrival, suitcase sorting, passport collection and distribution or room allocation. All in all, a magical voyage which is very much in my mind, my conversations and my dreams.

Hello Nazir. Thank you for the “Welcome Home” greeting! Our tour certainly met and at times even exceeded our expectations! Some key points: -Our Explore India contact Rajeev Sharma was very professional at handling all those questions that are asked at the beginning of the tour. -Our guide Arvind Sharma was very knowledgeable, and always approachable. He was always prompt and was very passionate in describing the many rituals that happen in India. -Our driver (Ravi) and his assistant (Shankur) were always courteous and caring and always greeted us with smiles every time we returned to the bus. -Our hotels were definitely acceptable and there were 3 hotels that in our minds were exceptional: 1. The Leela Ambience. 2. The Tigress Ranthambore and 3. The Pride Plaza Aerocity. In summary, both Alan and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Explore India and would have no hesitation at all in recommending this tour to others. Sincerely,

Hi Nazir, Well it has been more than a couple of months since we returned from our tour of Incredible India! Overall I had an amazing time and have told everyone I run into, that Explore India is a great travel company and going on a trip to India is truly a trip of a lifetime. HIGHLIGHTS: Your company is very organized and we saw so many sights in a short time. All the transportation - coach, jeeps, train, plane and camels were just great. The logistics of travelling between town and around town, went very well. Hotels: again 10/10. The tent - well - we would probably pass on that down the road. Food - all the restaurants were good and the choice of cuisine just great. BUT - there was too much food! Having 3 meals a day is way too much food. I would much rather have just breakfast and dinner included - and purchase a light snack for lunch wherever we might be - for lunch. I gained 10 pounds - UG... ACTIVITIES: Tours of the monuments, forts, Palaces and Temples were fine. I know you cannot please all the people all the time! - so some are more interesting and some less!. In Jaipur the visit to Jantar Mantar was the least interesting of the whole trip - I would much rather have gone to see the area where the set was for the movie Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. GUIDES: Tahir was a delight to have as our guide. And all the other staff looking after us - did an incredible job All 10/10! So...much success with your company. With the Canadian dollar down and portfolios dropping, my travel plans for the immediate future are on hold. Hopefully, things will turn around soon! Cheers, And thanks again for hosting our trip to Incredible India! Sincerely,

Pamela Shaw

Leona and I thoroughly enjoy our trip. The trip was just right, not too short or too long. With a small group, we got to know everyone and even promise to travel together in the future. No problem with the Hotels or our meals. Kingfisher beer and only Kingfisher beer, no complaint. Our tour guide Sanjay, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and funny. Overall, it was a good trip and I highly recommended your company to our friends as a place to deal with. We are planning to go back in 2 years to see the south part of India or trekking north to Darjeeling, Sikkim area.

This is how we tell it:) After reading an ad in the Globe& Mail, phone calls to Nazir (voice of confidence and charm) what could l say. Although it took some time to do some research and a few emails/calls finally it was a go... From the first morning at 300a.m.in our hotel in Delhi we first met our Leader we were confident we had made a good choice for our first trip to India. As we reflect the first thing that comes to mind is how well every detail was so well organized, the personal touch and the caring way that our Leader Nazir looked out for everyone was absolutely amazing.. Some of the many moments that stick out in my mind:) Never in my wildest dream had l ever thought of spending Valentine day in Old Delhi, the sights, the sounds & the crowds l could never imagine or was l prepared. The Jama Mosque, Bicycle Rickshaw ride(just one of several)memorial site of Mahatma Gandhi, the Unesco sites, more Mosques, more Temples and. amazing Forts...To top off the day like all others to follow was the accommodations & dining experiences all extra-ordinary. We also remember Varnasi, the religious Capital of Hinduism again the Temples & Museum, the Banks of the Ganges to witness the ceremony of the Aarti to the sunrise early next morning to see the bathing Ghats. Also how could we ever forget another early morning to "The Jewel,The Great TAJ" There was so much more,2 memorable elephant rides, one in the early morning another at sunset through the bush ending with a party of entertainment, dancing and FOOD(always food)The most amazing evening Camel ride at a Safari Camp, again a lovely evening under the evening sky on the desert, another banquet with entertainment and dancing. No travel brochure or photo could ever capture any of these settings,They are more than words can explain. Everytime we tell friends or recall an experience we come up with more WOWS Nazir..not only were you our fearless leader but you were always showing your sincere concern that we all have a good time in your beloved country. We loved the trip, we enjoyed our travel companions and now we bask in the memories. Cheers,

I was talking to my husband again about the trip and the two of us agreed that it was a very well-organized trip and excellent value for money . . . above expectations. I would not hesitate to recommend the trip to others. I celebrated my birthday in Agra and it was so lovely. There was a cake and Explore India even gave me a beautiful gift of a shawl! Thanks so much.

Andhra Pradesh Election Results 2024: As Pawan Kalyan Heads to Maiden Win, A Look at His Political Journey

Curated By : Dishya Sharma

Last Updated: June 04, 2024, 11:17 IST

Andhra Pradesh, India

JSP chief Pawan Kalyan is eyeing his maiden win in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.

JSP chief Pawan Kalyan is eyeing his maiden win in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.

Actor and Jana Sena founder Pawan Kalyan is leading in the Pithapuram Assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh against Vanga Geetha Viswanatham of Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP

Actor and Jana Sena founder Pawan Kalyan is heading to his maiden election win, with strong leads in the Pithapuram Assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh. Contesting against Kalyan is Vanga Geetha Viswanatham of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP).

Pawan Kalyan has this time aligned with the BJP and Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP for the Lok Sabha and Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections. As part of a seat-sharing deal among NDA partners, TDP was allocated 144 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha constituencies while BJP contested six Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly seats. Under the deal, Jana Sena contested two Lok Sabha and 21 Assembly seats.

Pawan Kalyan Leads in Pithapuram: Who is He?

Pawan Kalyan, 55, is a renowned Telugu actor and politician in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The actor, who is the brother of Telugu stars Chiranjeevi and Nagendra Babu, is known for his martial arts and starred in several films, including Gokulamlo Seeta (1997), Suswagatham (1998), Thammudu (1999), Kushi (2001), Balu (2005), Jalsa (2008), Gabbar Singh (2012), Attarintiki Daredi (2013), Gopala Gopala (2015), and Vakeel Saab (2021), to name a few.

He ventured into politics in 2008, spearheading the youth wing of Praja Rajyam Party, called Yuvarajyam. He was named the president of the party started by his brother Chiranjeevi. Kalyan campaigned hard for the party but several health hiccups and otherwise led the party to pump the brakes on Kalyan’s political career. He rose again in 2014 and this time, he started a new political party called the Jana Sena Party (JSP).

Rising from the Defeat

In 2019, Pawan Kalyan contested for the first time and was met with massive disappointment. The JSP chief contested from Gajuwaka and Bhimavaram constituencies but lost in both. Kalyan lost to YSRCP leader T Nagireddy in the Gajuwaka seat by over 16,000 votes. In Bhimavaram, he lost to Grandhi Srinivas of YSRCP by over 8,000 votes.

Pawan Kalyan’s Political Promises:

On April 30, Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (JSP) released an election manifesto with N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP), featuring several promises. Both parties promised several facilities for women. These include “free bus travel and monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,500 to women aged 18-59 years.”

They promised three free gas cylinders every year to each household and an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,000 per month, among other things in their manifesto. They have also promised to give Rs 15,000 to every school-going student via their ‘Thalliki Vandhanam’ scheme. Given that Pithapuram is an agricultural constituency, the two parties have also come up with several beneficial plans for the farmers.

A sum of Rs 20,000 a year will be given to farmers for financial assistance, nine hours of uninterrupted power supply for farmers, and solar pump sets at free of cost will be provided if the alliance comes to power.

I left my life in India for rural Canada. My first thought upon arrival was, 'Where is everyone?'

It's taken many years to find my footing in alberta but i now feel at home, thanks to welcoming community.

My stomach turned during my training at McDonald's as I learned how to wrap breakfast sandwiches. I had never eaten an egg and the smell of meat was overwhelming.

As a new immigrant to Canada from India, I needed a stable source of income. Never did I dream that with my multiple degrees and certificates in pharmacy and business administration, I'd be working in a restaurant. I'm a vegetarian and I hoped the nausea I was experiencing was not mirrored on my face while I worked at the west Edmonton fast-food counter.

But there's also no way I could have known that seven years later, I would be sitting in my own pharmacy and be welcomed with homemade baked goods and gifts flooding in from my patients at Christmastime.

A man and woman smile in a grassy park with many people in the background.

Out of my comfort zone

In 2012, when I received my permanent resident visa for Canada, I was plagued with doubts about moving to a new country nearly 12,000 kilometres away from home. Should I go? Do I want to start over again? Is it worth the risk? So many unknowns. Plus, we would leave behind our family, friends and culture.

What tilted my decision toward Canada was the thrill of a new adventure and the satisfaction that would come from being able to establish ourselves on our own.

I knew that the transition wouldn't be an easy one, but then I told myself, "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."

My husband and I took a leap of faith and decided to give Canada a try. We arrived in Canada on April 30 that same year and were completely exhausted after a 40-hour plane ride from India. My husband had contracted food poisoning during our layover in London, eight hours prior to our arrival in Canada, and was in no condition to help me navigate this strange new world.

It was beginning to hit me just how out of my comfort zone this journey would take me.

Speed bumps on my journey

My early days in Canada were not easy.

After applying for jobs everywhere based on my previous experience in clinical research, I failed to get any interviews. I tried working at McDonald's, but I lasted only a day.

Next, I landed a part-time job as a cashier at a Superstore.

My job as a university professor in Ahmedabad in western India was being held for me, with the option to go back to my position within three months if I decided to return. I would be lying if I said the thought didn't cross my mind.

Thankfully, the universe had a different plan for me. One evening, a lady walked into the store and asked me if I was new there. I was surprised and said, "Yes, I am new, how did you know?"

She smiled and told me that I did not look like a regular cashier. Then it hit me how visibly nervous I was. She asked me what I did for a living back home, and after talking briefly, asked for my contact number, which I reluctantly provided to her.

A rural opportunity

Just as I was ready to give up on my new venture in Canada, I got a call from the cousin of the Superstore customer. He owned a pharmacy and was looking for a pharmacy assistant.

Our Edmonton: Road trip to Mayerthorpe

After a formal interview, I landed the position, which was located in Evansburg, Alta., a hamlet about 90 kilometres west of Edmonton with a population under 1,000.

My first thought upon arrival was, "Where is everyone? It is so quiet here."

I saw a deer crossing sign for the first time and I asked my new boss, "Do deer actually, physically cross here? In town?"

I grew up in Mumbai, a concrete jungle, so the thought of seeing wildlife in the middle of town was inconceivable to me.

I wondered if the pharmacy even had enough customers to warrant hiring me. But I soon found out that I was wrong. Evansburg is a bustling little community and the pharmacy was very busy. People were friendly and soon I knew most patients by name.

Going for my dreams

My boss pushed me to renew my licence to work as a pharmacist in Canada. It took me three years to do the paperwork, endless hours of studying with full-time work and unfamiliar regulations that I found challenging.

During this time, I also worked as a relief pharmacist in Edmonton and realized the connections made with my patients in a rural town is totally different from those in the city. They didn't feel like a number to be served.

When I was finally ready to open my own pharmacy, my husband and I visited multiple locations in rural Alberta.

We wanted a community with all basic amenities and close to the city if needed for a day trip. Mayerthorpe, Alta., a town just north of Evansburg and about 130 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, ticked all the boxes.

Mayerthorpe Value Drug Mart opened in December 2019.

Many people were surprised that I knew their names when they came to my store, and my patients started referring their friends and family. My lifelong superpower of remembering names clearly paid off.

The community welcomed me into their fold. During my second Christmas in Mayerthorpe, as pandemic lockdowns kept most people inside, my wonderful clients dropped off gifts like crochet socks, table runners, earrings, candles, soaps, plants and flowers.

A woman stands against a red wall holding a business card holder made of deer antlers.

One of my patients dropped off fresh apples and asked me, "Do you know how to make pie?"

"Not at all," I said and laughed. The next Monday, I had three pies at the store to share with my staff, thanks to that kind patient.

I am thankful to everyone in the town of Mayerthorpe for accepting me with an open heart.

Nilufa Virji, the Superstore customer who I was reluctant to give my phone number to, is now my close friend. I called her after every pharmacy exam I passed. We often meet in Edmonton, and after I moved to Mayerthorpe, we stay in touch over phone calls and texts.

Rural communities are frequently overlooked by bigger institutions. But in my opinion, they are the heart of Canada and the reason I'm still here and plan to be for a long time to come.

Mayerthorpe is now home and it feels like everyone knows my name.

Anasuya Sengupta

Cannes 2024 was a life-changing journey for Indian production designer-turned actor Anasuya Sengupta who won best actress at the festival’s Un Certain Regard strand for “ The Shameless .”

“Then one fine day in 2020, I saw him in my inbox. And he was potentially offering me a lead part in his feature film, and I was completely caught off guard. And a little bit suspicious, not in a bad way,” Sengupta told Variety . But I was worried. I’m like, ‘Do you not know my background?’ ‘I don’t have a body of work as an actor. I don’t even have headshots. I can’t provide you with anything.’ But he was quite persistent, oddly enough. And I gave in, and I read the script.”

Once she read the script, it was a “no-brainer” for Sengupta. She took her time but eventually sent a self-tape to Bojanov. “I kept coming across pictures of Anasuya. There was something in her attitude. I go with a gut reaction,” Bojanov told Variety .

The Variety review of “The Shameless” praises Sengupta’s turn as “an impeccably, self-assured performance, rife with enrapturing nuances that create a liberating sense of queer Indian femininity seldom depicted on screen.”

Sengupta’s physical prep involved martial arts and running three kilometers a day. An English honors graduate of Kolkata’s Jadavpur University, she also wrote copious character notes as a prequel to the script. Bojanov gave her the liberty to design the character. “I tried to design Renuka in a way that she’s gaunt, but strong. She doesn’t really prioritize square meals in the day. But at the same time, we needed her to look super-powerful. She’s a survivor, she survived on the street from when she’s a teenager,” Sengupta said.

“Besides that, this lone wolf angle that she had, I found that super attractive. It’s not something I, Anasuya, have at all, because, I’m surrounded by lovely friends and a supportive family,” Sengupta said. Apart from establishing chemistry with Omara, Sengupta kept to herself during the filming process and allotted different pieces of music she’d listen to on her headphones to suit the various moods of the film. “People rallied around me beautifully. I got all the support that I could have wanted. It was super collaborative,” Sengupta said. “I’ve never had such a good time every day at work. It’s never happened in my life before.”

Sengupta describes the reception to the film at Cannes as “magical” and found herself in the limelight for the first time. As a production designer, “You bust your ass behind the scenes, year upon year with little to no recognition. And you don’t even seek that, because with production design, if you’ve done your job well, it should not be noticed,” Sengupta said. “I still believe that even acting shouldn’t be that noticeable.”

Nevertheless, post screening, Sengupta was constantly stopped on the Croisette by admirers. “It’s not like people noticed my acting, the praises that people came up to me and were giving me was about that they felt really in the skin of the character.”

As for the award itself, Sengupta was hoping for the Queer Palm at best and the win made her “ecstatic,” particularly as the jury was headed by Xavier Dolan, one of her favorite filmmakers. “I couldn’t get over it. In fact, I told him, ‘Why have you stopped making films? And please do not and please make one with me.’ And so I’m waiting for that to happen,” Sengupta said.

It was a triumphant Cannes 2024 for India, with a record amount of representation and prizes. Payal Kapadia won the Grand Prix for “All We Imagine as Light.” Chidananda S. Naik won the best film prize in La Cinef short film strand with “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know.” Santosh Sivan won the Pierre Angénieux honor for cinematography.

For decades, billboards and advertisements for popular butter brand Amul have held up a mirror to current Indian events. Sengupta returned home to a hero’s welcome and saw herself on a giant Amul billboard in Mumbai.

“I went for a film festival and I came back being made to feel like the darling of the nation. I was absolutely not prepared for this,” Sengupta said.
