Mack Map

The excitement builds as we continue north. We stop in Amish Country for a family-style meal before heading to our hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to get some rest before setting sail.

We continue traveling by bus before being ferried to the most magical island on the Great Lakes. Mackinac Island is a land where the horse and carriage were never replaced by the automobile; family-owned lodging properties were never replaced by corporate hotels, and fudge stores never replaced their 19th-century recipes with instant mixes. We will overnight on the island for 3 nights.

This morning, we enjoy a carriage tour of the island before arriving at The Grand Hotel for lunch. After our meal, feel free to explore the iconic formations, majestic churches, and unique stores

Guess what we have planned for everybody today? NOTHING! So, take this opportunity to relax, walk, shop, eat, or do anything you want! There is no better place to explore and make memories!

We leave the peace of Mackinac Island to explore the one and only Frankenmuth, known for its Bavarian-style architecture. This lovely little town is bound to delight the senses as we visit Bronner Christmas Wonderland .  Here at Bronner, you have a chance to do some souvenir shopping at the world's largest Christmas store, where Christmas is celebrated 361 days a year!  Top this off with a Meal at the Bavarian Restaurant to make this a day to remember.  We will be spending the night here in Frankenmuth.

We have been exploring the past these last few days, but this morning, we jump back into the 20 th century as we continue down the interstate on our way homeward.  We will  overnight in Terre Haute, IN.

On our way back today, we have one more included meal together as we reminisce about the good, old-fashioned memories we made on this trip back in time.

11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

1.  Where You Stay Could Greatly Impact Your Overall Experience

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

One of the biggest questions Brad and I had while planning our Mackinac Island trip was where to stay. This didn’t result from a lack of options (there were tons available), but rather because there were so many places to choose from! We received mixed suggestions from veteran travelers: stay on the island for the full experience, stay in nearby Mackinaw City or St. Ignace for lower rates, find a nearby campsite off the island . . . the list went on and on.

2.  When In Doubt, Choose Comfort Over Cuteness

3.  one lightweight bag could drastically improve your day, 4.  bringing a bike isn’t just a good idea – it’s essential.

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

If you own a bike and have even the slightest of riding skills, bring that wheeled contraption with you! There are no cars allowed on Mackinac Island, so biking is a lifesaver when you want to get from point A to point B quickly. Plus, there are so many gorgeous views to take in on Mackinac Island’s self-guided bike tour ( click here to learn more and see photos )!

Keep In Mind :

Bike prep tip :, 5.  ferry rides are a lot of fun.

6.  No, The Whole Island Does Not Smell Like Horse Poop

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

Okay, I’m going to be real about this: there are lots of horses on Mackinac Island and yes , they do often relieve themselves (horses gotta do what horses gotta do!). In fact, you will probably smell a bit of horse “aroma” as soon as you leave the ferry and step out onto main street. Mackinac Island, however, has an amazing staff that’s dedicated to cleaning horse droppings from the streets. The result? You may notice a bit of “farm freshness” from time to time, but the smell is typically incidental (i.e., you may notice when you pass by a new “delivery”). Fair warning, however: you’ll still want to watch your step (or bike wheels) as you navigate the streets.

7.  The Tours Are Totally Worth It

8.  you may run into someone you know, 9.  you should consider making a meal plan.

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

There are several great restaurants to choose from on Mackinac Island, with cuisine that ranges from hamburgers to high-end dinners. Make sure to get to your favorite dinner restaurant early to beat crowds, or consider switching things up with a picnic by the water. There’s so much to see on the island, you won’t even miss the table and chairs!

10.  You Can Find Some Really Nice Souvenirs

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

I LOVE souvenir shopping. The problem with souvenirs, however, is that they can sometimes be a little tacky. Never fear! Mackinac Island has plenty of little boutiques and galleries where you can find something that’s both useful and out of the norm. My favorite is  Little Luxuries of Mackinac Island , where pretty pillows, stationery, and kitchen products set the scene. A lot of the items in this store are made by local artists, so you can shop small and support local business at the same time!

11.  There’s A Reason Tourists Are Called “Fudgies”

Wading In Big Shoes: 11 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Mackinac Island

I’m really not sure if the term “fudgie” is meant to be generic or derogatory, but nevertheless, it’s how Mackinac Island residents refer to tourists. I can’t say I blame them, because who in their right mind could make a trip to Mackinac without picking up some delicious fudge?! Try walking by any of the well-known shops— Ryba’s , Murdick’s , Joann’s —and breathing in that sweet, buttery smell without letting your mouth water. It’s a delicious treat that Mackinac is known for, and undoubtedly a great gift to take back to family and friends (if you can keep from eating it all on the car ride home!).

Murdick’s Fudge

The history of fudge on Mackinac Island began in the late 19th century when it quickly became a staple treat for visitors.

With its rich, creamy texture and simple ingredients, fudge captured the taste buds of tourists and became a symbol of the island’s charm.

As tourism grew, so did the demand for this sweet confection, leading to the establishment of several fudge shops that turned Mackinac Island into the “Fudge Capital of the World.”

Murdick’s Fudge , established in 1887 by Henry Murdick, is one of the oldest and most iconic fudge shops on the island, located on Main Street.

As the first shop to bring fudge to Mackinac, Murdick’s played a key role in making the island synonymous with this sweet treat.

While on Main Street, make sure to stop in Murdick’s to sample classic Mackinac Island fudge and find a tasty souvenir to take home.

Fort Mackinac

Located in lovely Marquette Park and dating back to the late 18th Century, Fort Mackinac was a military outpost erected by the British during the Revolutionary War as a strategic front between the Straits of Mackinac and Lakes Michigan and Huron.

The fort continued to serve as an outpost for the American Military into the 19th century, was closed in 1895, and turned into a museum in use today.

A part of Mackinac Island State Park, visiting Fort Mackinac offers a unique, immersive glimpse into America’s colonial history, with demonstrations and daily various tours and programs.

All fourteen buildings in the fort have been restored and feature different aspects of the fort, from living quarters and military medicine to a reading room and kids’ quarters.

Arch Rock is one of Mackinac Island’s most iconic natural landmarks, formed over thousands of years by the forces of erosion.

Visiting Arch Rock provides a peaceful experience in nature and is accessible via the Tranquil Bluff Trail, a scenic route that winds through the island’s biodiverse forests.

The hike through lush surroundings brings you along the trail, leading you to the arch while highlighting the island’s natural beauty. If you’re visiting in the fall, the scenery along this hike is even more spectacular, with quintessential, colorful Northern Michigan foliage.

There is no charge to visit Arch Rock, and the trail is free to access. For those looking to explore more of the island’s natural features, the Tranquil Bluff Trail connects to other popular hiking routes, including up to Fort Holmes – the highest point of the island – offering a comprehensive outdoor experience on Mackinac Island.

One of the key highlights is Fort Michilimackinac , a historic fort that dates back to the 17th century. The fort provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s colonial past with reenactments, exhibits, and guided tours that showcase life during the French and British periods. You can also visit the fort as part of a sunset cruise.

History of Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island has a rich and storied history that dates back centuries. The island was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi, who recognized its strategic location as a trading hub. They called the island “Michilimackinac,” which means “great turtle” in the Ojibwe language.

In the 17th century, French explorers arrived and established a fur trading post on the mainland near the island. They recognized the importance of Michilimackinac as a gateway to the vast North American fur trade network. The British gained control of the area during the French and Indian War in the mid-18th century, and Michilimackinac became a key outpost in their fur trading empire.

Mackinac Island became even more significant during the American Revolutionary War when it served as a strategic military post. The fort on the island, now known as Fort Mackinac, changed hands multiple times between the British and the Americans during the conflict. It played a crucial role in the defense of the Great Lakes region and witnessed several significant battles.

After the war, the island remained in American hands and continued to thrive as a trading center and summer resort. In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island’s popularity as a tourist destination grew rapidly. Wealthy vacationers from the Midwest flocked to the island, attracted by its natural beauty and the luxurious Grand Hotel, which opened in 1887.

One of the defining features of Mackinac Island’s history is its ban on motor vehicles. In 1898, the city passed an ordinance prohibiting automobiles to preserve the island’s tranquility and maintain the nostalgic charm that visitors had come to love. Today, the island remains car-free, contributing to its unique appeal as a place frozen in time.

Preservation efforts on Mackinac Island have been remarkable. The entire island, including the buildings and landscapes, is considered a National Historic Landmark. The architectural styles range from Colonial and Greek Revival to Victorian and even some examples of Native American influences. Strolling through the streets feels like walking through a living museum.

Mackinac Island continues to welcome visitors from around the world, who come to experience its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and charming atmosphere. Whether it’s exploring the historic fort, biking along the scenic trails, or indulging in the island’s famous fudge, a visit to Mackinac Island is a step back in time that’s not to be missed.

Mission Point’s new Fall Experience package offers bike rentals, ferry tickets to Mackinac Island

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - Autumn on the island can be postcard-perfect. The shops and restaurants are still open, but the crowds have thinned on the winding interior forest roads. The backdrop of fall color makes them a lovely spot for long walks or a horse-and-carriage ride.

Mission Point , one of the island’s biggest resorts, has designed a Fall Experience getaway package that bundles activities and perks so guests can create their own vacations.

“Savor the cool, crisp air, the warm hues of amber leaves, and the serene, quieter atmosphere of the island while enjoying cozy moments with seasonal menus and drinks by the fire in the lobby,” resort staff said. “Indulge in seasonal flavors across all three of Mission Point Resort’s restaurants – Chianti, Round Island Kitchen, and Bistro on the Greens - each with just-launched fall menus.”

The Fall Experience package can be booked through Saturday, Oct. 26. It includes accommodations, round-trip tickets on Shepler’s ferry, bike rentals, and savings on food and beverages.

Some of the highlights:

  • $75 food/beverage credit per adult on your first night, with $50 credit per adult on each additional night.
  • $25 food/beverage credit per teen age 13-17 on your first night, with $25 credit per teen on each additional night.
  • Children 12 and younger eat free off the children’s menu

“Fall is a fantastic time to visit Mackinac and a favorite among our staff. With the last ferries leaving early, you truly get to experience the island as your own,” said Liz Ware. “To maximize your stay, consider booking one of Mission Point’s packages. For the best value, visit midweek - Sundays, Mondays, or Tuesdays are ideal.”

Mission Point Resort

Fall at Mission Point can be enjoyed outside on the Great Lawn, along the shoreline, or inside the cozy main lodge or the resort's restaurants. Mission Point Resort

Mission Point’s spot on the eastern “sunrise side” of the island makes it conveniently close to downtown, but it still feels like a separate area. Guests and visitors travel down Main Street, which then morphs into a tree-lined corridor with the resort on one side and its popular Great Lawn and shoreline area on the other.

It has its own shops and restaurants for dine-in and takeout. The open-air patios allow everyone to soak up the last of the fall sunshine. At night, the huge lawn with its signature Adirondack chairs becomes one of the best spots for stargazing - or a little nighttime freighter watching.

To help vacationers kick off their planning, Mission Point execs and staff put together some of their favorite Mackinac things to do in fall:

“Running the trails on the island, especially Tranquil Bluff Trail.” Mark Ware, CEO
