Jeep plant opens up for tour during record Wrangler sales

by Jay Hannah

The North Plant of the Toledo Assembly Complex opened its doors for a tour on Friday (WNWO).

TOLEDO, Ohio (WNWO) — The North Plant of the Toledo Assembly Complex is now in its 17th year of operation. With the Jeep Truck launch coming in 2019 and the Wrangler JL now almost a year into its production, it's an exciting time in the building.

The Toledo Assembly Complex has come a long way since making bicycles in 1904.

Since beginning to make Jeep in 1941, Toledo has seen millions of vehicles produced, including a record of nearly 540,000 in 2015.

"Wow, it's changed tremendously. The technology here is insane," said ISD Mentor, Marie Cortez.

On Friday, the plant was open for a tour to show off six fassets of their operation, including roof design, windshield operation and frame development.

This year has been the year of the Wrangler, which is only made in Toledo.

Production of the JL model began in December of 2017, and in 2018, the Jeep Wrangler has set a calendar year to date sales record with more than 204,000.

"Watch the development going on here. Watch everything we're creating, it's amazing with the technology we've got going on," said Quality Inspector, Vickie Marino.

Jeep employs more than 5,600 employees in Toledo with many being second and third generation workers.

Just nine years ago, that employment number was just above 1,700, and Jeep promised to add 1,800 more jobs.

That number has swelled to be almost 3,900, more than tripling the amount of workers.

For Windsor, Ontario born Jeff Gelinas, he's following in his father's footsteps. Gelinas once worked on the assembly line just like his dad, and he's very excited to see some of the ergonomical advancements the plant has taken.

"It's really close to the heart to make this plant better for the operators."

This year, Jeepfest in Toledo drew more than 60,000 people and made around $4.5 million for the area. More than 1,100 Jeeps were in the parade.

An unforgettable jeep assembly line adventure, a jeep momma exclusive.

Toledo, Ohio, might not scream "vacation hotspot," but for Jeep aficionados, it's nothing short of paradise. This city, steeped in Jeep lore, turned into the unexpected highlight of my summer family road trip. Forget the typical travelogues; let's dive into a world where rugged trails meet assembly lines, and where I got an exclusive sneak peek at the Jeep world’s next big thing—the JL model!

The Exclusive Invite

The journey began with an unexpected invitation from a fan who works at the Jeep assembly plant. Royal, a JK Specifications Analyst and a passionate third-generation employee, offered me an insider's tour of the revered site. The anticipation built as we navigated through the iconic Jeep and Willys Parkways, the streets themselves a nod to the rich heritage of the brand.

First Impressions: Entering Jeep's Heartland

Driving onto Chrysler Drive was like walking into a Wrangler convention. Everywhere you looked, Wranglers lined the roads—a testament to their popularity. The plant's entrance was just as impressive, featuring a sleek black Wrangler and doors painted a vibrant purple, welcoming me into the fold.

The No-Camera Rule: A Blessing in Disguise

Inside, the plant had a strict no-pictures policy, which honestly, let me soak in every moment unfiltered. The assembly line was a spectacle of efficiency and craftsmanship. Witnessing the creation of Wrangler bodies, from the chassis by Mobis North America to the bodies by KUKA Systems, was nothing short of mesmerizing.

Meeting the Makers

The true magic, however, came from the people. Workers, possibly even those who assembled my own Jeep, radiated pride in their work. Royal shared stories that brought the line to life, like the buzz of excitement when a new color Wrangler rolled off the line. It was clear—these folks loved their jobs, and their passion was infectious.

Behind the Scenes: A Logistical Ballet

The organization behind the scenes was just as impressive. Robots and humans worked in harmony, delivering specific parts to each Wrangler with pinpoint accuracy. From the meticulous door latch adjustments to the precise loading of outsource parts like seats and tops, every detail mattered.  Watching these procedures was incredibly fascinating. The assembly line worker had a knack for knowing just how much adjustment each door needed.

Those outsourced parts like the seats or the Wrangler tops from Bestop come in on the semi's pre-determined to a specific Jeep. They load the parts to a specific spot on the truck so they match up to the correct spot on the assembly line. Robots unload the trucks and place the parts onto the assembly lines in just the right place to match to the correct Wrangler. The coordination is astonishing.

Inside the Assembly Line: Where Magic Happens

The facility is pretty big. Here is an aerial picture of the site. The yellow dots are the part of the plant I toured. The red arrow points to the conveyor that brings the bodies and chassis over from the on-site suppliers.  Once these are assembled and painted they are shipped over thru a tunnel (see the red arrow in the picture above).

Driving Course Testing Facility Tour

Once all the Jeep Parts are assembled, it's off to the water test to test for any leaking. Then it's almost time to be shipped out to various dealers across the USA. But there is one last stop, a indoor driving course to make sure there are no rattles and squeaks. I was allowed to take pictures here. It's where I was able to snap a photo of the JL all wrapped up

The JK Farewell

One of the most poignant moments was realizing I was witnessing the end of an era for the JK and JKU models, soon to be replaced by the new JT Truck. It felt like saying goodbye to an old friend, but the excitement for what was coming next was palpable.

The JL Reveal: An Exclusive Sneak Peek

Here's where I really hit the jackpot— I was among the privileged few to witness the unveiling of the new JL model ! About a month after my visit, pictures of the JL leaked, and believe it or not, the folks at Jeep thought I might be the leaker. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t me. But the early glimpse into the future of Jeep was a moment I'll never forget.

Toledo Jeep Plant Tour - Lasting Memories

This tour was more than just a factory visit; it was a pilgrimage to the heart of Jeep. Behind every robust Jeep that conquers the trails, there’s a dedicated team pouring their hearts into each vehicle. Toledo Jeep Factory Visit

Own a wrangler then this is where it was made. we take a look at the legendary toledo factory.

By Shahzad Sheikh

This is a very special place. Its significance is made apparent from the permanent memorial to World War II veterans featuring a restored 1942 Willys Military Jeep. You can read about the history of the Jeep here, but if you own a Jeep Wrangler today, then it was made right here at Jeep’s Toledo Assembly Complex. The only other car made here is the new Jeep Cherokee – which is the production line we looked at whilst visiting there last month.

Car production for over 100 years

There’s been a production facility here at Toledo since the 1800s when they used to make bicycles. In 1910 John North Willys bought the Toledo plant for Overland Motor Company. Willys was the second largest producer of cars in the US after Ford between 1912 and 1918. They made the Willys Overland and later Whippet here.

However Willys suffered and production slowed dramatically during the 1920s Depression Era, until the contract to make the Jeep was won and production began in 1941 – although at the time production was shared with Ford and American Bantam as nearly 360,000 units were made by the end of the Second World War.

Of course after the War Willys focussed on making ‘civilian’ Jeeps and Jeep-based vehicles (including trucks), and the Willys Aero from 1952-1968, whilst of course continuing to make the Jeep for the US Army.

Changes in ownership

Kaiser Motors bought Willys in 1953, changing the name to Willys Motor Company and again to Kaiser-Jeep Corporation in 1963. It was sold to American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1970; which was then taken over by Renault in 79 and finally bought by Chrysler in 1987, by which time the Jeep CJ had already been replaced by the Wrangler.

Chrysler now, of course, is part of Fiat-Chrysler and production at Toledo has been ramped up massively of late to meet continuing and increasing demand for this historic brand. Up to 6000 people work two shifts a day over six days a week.

More Jeeps than ever

In 2009 this plant made 144,000 vehicles, now the sprawling 4m square foot facility churns out an annual number expected to hit half a million by the end of this year. And the 15th millionth car produced here will roll off the assembly lines next year.

Joining the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited production – the only plant to produce those cars – is the new Jeep Cherokee. Despite co-development with Fiat only the diesel engines come from Italy whilst 75% of the parts for the car are sourced from within 300km of the factory.

Precision Cherokee production

The plant may have been around a long time but most of the facility we saw being used for Cherokee production was built in 1997 and employs state-of-the-art just-in-time production techniques, including a metrology department where they’re dedicated to ensuring micro-millimetre precise fit and finish for not just the new Cherokee but also the veteran Wrangler.

And along with the plant workers who seem to take genuine pride in working at the world’s only Jeep Wrangler plant, there are the latest manufacturing robots brought in from Japan. At one spot-wielding station an astonishing 18 robots go to work on the Cherokee body at one time.

But as we leave the plant our thoughts keep coming back to the core Jeep product, the Wrangler, a direct descendant of a car that helped win a World War. And this is where they’ve been brought to life for over 70 years. That makes this place very special indeed.

$40 million Jeep Experience museum opening in Toledo, Ohio

56,000-square-foot interactive museum will be inaugurated in 2022.

jeep wrangler plant tours

Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles ( FCA ) is helping a nonprofit organization open a Jeep museum in Toledo, Ohio. Called The Jeep Experience, the $40 million museum is expected to open its doors in 2022.

Jeep has manufactured its off-roaders in Toledo since the 1940s, and local enthusiasts have spent years seeking a way to bring a museum to the town. Randy Oostra, the president and CEO of health care company ProMedica, played an instrumental role in making the museum happen, according to the Toledo Blade . He floated the original idea, and it quickly received the support of FCA leadership.

"They've been incredibly involved with all the planning. They want to be involved with future decisions and the board," Oostra told the  Blade . He added FCA could help fund the project.

Funding is key; Oostra won't settle for putting a couple of vintage Jeep models in a dusty warehouse and calling it a day. His team is drawing inspiration from the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and from the Chevrolet Corvette museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to allow visitors to immerse themselves in Jeep's vast heritage. He notably envisions interactive exhibits.

"When you think about all of the opportunities, whether it's history, what's happened in automotive, World War II, they use Jeeps in ' Jurassic Park ,' and then you look at engineering and design, and production and art, you begin to think about it from a whole variety of opportunities," he explained.

It sounds like dinosaurs, soldiers, and off-roading will all be on the menu. The Jeep Experience will be housed in an existing, 56,000-square-foot building located in metropolitan Toledo, but its exact address won't be announced until Oostra's nonprofit closes the deal. And, while Toledo is well off the tourist circuit, museum planners expect to attract approximately 250,000 visitors annually.

Robin Whitney, ProMedica's chief strategic planning, business development, and real estate officer revealed the group will offer basic food services. We love the idea of a Jeep-themed restaurant. It's also open to building a hotel next to the property if needed. All told, the museum will create 25 jobs in the Toledo area, though that number could grow depending on the amenities offered.

Oostra and his team still have several hurdles to clear before they can give fans the opportunity to learn about the CJ-5 (pictured) by jumping one on a muddy off-road trail a stone's throw from where Jeep makes the Wrangler and the Gladiator . They've launched a fund-raising campaign expected to last for approximately a year and a half. Design work will begin in early 2021, which is also when planners will begin assembling cars, and the museum is tentatively scheduled to welcome its first visitors by the end of 2022. Oostra promised the building will receive a striking design.

Toledo factory tour?

Is the Toledo plant open to the public for factory tours? I went through factory tours at HD, Buell and Honda plants when I rode those marques, and found them inspiring. Good way to generate new sales as well as encourage brand loyalty among existing owners.

Jeep Factory Tour?

jeep wrangler plant tours

  • Add to quote

So I tweeted on Twitter to the official Jeep page asking about factory tours a while ago. They say they don't have open public tour as an option, but if a group wants to come visit and see the place, that'd work. So, how many of us here would like to go tour the Jeep factory in Toledo? No date is set or anything yet, but they've got the person to set it up on speed dial at this point, so whenever enough interest shows, it'll be as simple as that. EDIT: I know I would contain myself and at least two others. So there's 3.

jeep wrangler plant tours

Dang, I live in Toledo! I'd definitely do it! I have at least 1 buddy who would go, potentially a few more if we had a date picked out in advance.

Progress! So far current count is to roughly 5 then. Hoping some more people see this. Maybe make a mini-gathering out of it in the mean time, since it'd be Jeepers going to the Jeep factory after all.

jeep wrangler plant tours

I could probably swing down with my dad, but i'd need a lot of advance notice.

Sounds good. I'd ask for at least a month period ahead of time or such. So that way people can get off work and such, longer if someone needs it.

I would be in for sure, just need some advance notice a few weeks out to plan. I would prefer it on a Saturday since I would be traveling from Chi-town. LMK, Murph

jeep wrangler plant tours

If I know enough in advance to take off work I'm in

Bump da dump.

count me and my dad in (possibly my bro), but it would have to be on a weekend or something, i've got school and after school activities every day of the week. and no spring break either, i'm going on a mission trip then.

I figured a Saturday or something is best bet. I'll ask them what days would be able to work with and all that fun stuff.

No one really checks the regional sections.

True, I mostly check in here for local stuff and hang out in YJ tech mostly. But that's about it.

count me in for atleast 2, probably 4, just need to know about a month in advanced

jeep wrangler plant tours

With some notice I'm in

jeep wrangler plant tours

I'll make it if I can. I can count probably 2 with me, at least one.

jeep wrangler plant tours

With enough notice I'm in with another 3, maybe.

same here with a round about date may be able to get 5 people

Cool guys. I told them a few days ago that I got about 10 to 15 lined up. Waiting on word back so we can start setting up a date and I'll tell them the new #s!

:cheers2: 10char.

jeep wrangler plant tours

I'd be down to. I'm in Bowling Green which is about 20-30min from Toledo!

Don't bring any "extra" things with you on your trip up :rofl::rofl:

jeep wrangler plant tours

Me and some buddies might be game to go depending on the date

Ok, so it seems I gotta write a letter to their public relations department in hopes they do approve us. I'm told they rarely do tours though. So keep your fingers crossed and hope I can persuade them.

jeep wrangler plant tours

I used to work for ChryCo in Perrysburg (12 1/2 yrs). Got a lot friends that work there still and a couple that work at the Jeep plant. I'd go. And, you're right. They rarely do tours anymore. Back in the day, I remember my dad taking me through the plant on their annual open house. By the time I started working at that same plant, they had long since stopped those open houses. I'll be watching here for future plans. Also, I'm going to get in touch with a friend, Mike, who works at the plant. Maybe he can give me some information. He's an end-of-line inspector. He's in charge of making sure no crap makes it out the door. Yes, end-user quality ratings have gone up since he started that job!:cheers2:

Hello, Jodi I'm e-mailing you in regards to the possibility of a Jeep Factory Tour as the correspondence over on the Jeep Twitter as notified you and I. I've compiled a group of other Jeep enthusiasts, both local to myself and the Great Lakes area, by both personal correspondence and online over at JeepForum.com. One of the best sites for everything Jeep related whether it be general discussion or asking how to fix things on my 15+ year old 93 Wrangler. So far the count has gotten to a guranteed 15 and it can reach as high as 25 depending on date/time for some people and their companions. As with a lot of people, the group that's interested are major Jeep fans. I know myself and group of local friends love to wrench on my Jeep every weekend because the ease of access to so much and having a project is fun. A few of the members on JeepForum.com that are also interested have built several CJs (Example: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/project-impulse-2-a-955980/ ) to people that owning 2005 TJs. We're all very passionate about our Jeeps, even if they're 30 years old or 3 years old. We wish to see where Jeeps are created. Where the magic begins, so to speak. We know they start off a factory floor and end up on the highest of mountain ridges, we just want to see the whole adventure our all capable machines transverse, even if it doesn't push them to their limits. We hope to hear back from you. Thanks for your time, Chris Gross Click to expand...

^I give my approval.

Looks good to me!
