5 Reasons to Love Intercontinental Bordeaux

By Jennifer Dombrowski 13 Comments

Bordeaux is a city that you just can’t help but feel regal in from the moment you set foot among its grandiose buildings and squares. There’s not another hotel better fit for a king or queen in Bordeaux Centre than the Intercontinental Bordeaux Grand Hotel and it’s certainly the place to stay when visiting the Wine Capital of the World .

Formerly known as Le Grand Hotel de Bordeaux & Spa, it became an Intercontinental property in early 2016. Always a fan of the Intercontinental brand, I was thrilled to be invited to stay at the hotel during trips I made while preparing to move to Bordeaux just after Intercontinental took the hotel over. From the wine concierge, who can arrange tours and private tastings, to the 1000 square meter spa that sits on the top floor of the hotel it’s easy to see why this is the top hotel in the city.

Bordeaux Place de la Comedie

1. Location, location, location

Bordeaux is a city where a mix of 18th century Neoclassical architecture meets Medieval. And the Place de la Comédie, where the Intercontinental Bordeaux sits in all its grandeur, is the very center of it all. You quite literally can not find a more central location to all of Bordeaux’s attractions .

The hotel is located in one of my favorite spots in Bordeaux and when I decided to move to the Wine Capital of the World, my apartment hunt fanned out in a rather small radius from the Grand Hotel in the neighborhood known as the Golden Triangle. It’s in the heart of the pedestrian area, a short walk from the gorgeous Place de la Bourse, tops the start of Rue Saint Catherine (the longest shopping street in Europe) like icing on a cake and has a tram stop right outside its doors to quickly whisk you to further afield attractions like La Cité du Vin .

2. The Urban Beach

Bordeaux is known by the nickname Sleeping Beauty because the porous limestone buildings were covered in a black crust from decades of weathering and pollution. The revitalization of the city saw the cleaning of them, returning the buildings to their honey colored glory.

While I love wandering the streets and gazing upon the lovely buildings, 347 of which are UNESCO listed buildings, I love taking in the city from above even more. With Intercontinental Bordeaux holding center court in the city, there’s hardly a better place take in a 360 ° view of Bordeaux.

Intercontinental Bordeaux Grand Hotel

You can climb to the top of the Pey-Berland Tower , Porte Cailhau and the bell tower of Basilique Saint-Michel. While they all have gorgeous panoramas to take in from the top of them, they don’t have a jacuzzi and you certainly can’t sip a champagne cocktail while taking in the view.

The rooftop is an urban beach available to spa goers and guests during the day and turns into the Night Beach from 7pm in the summertime.

3. Le Pressoir d’Argent Gordon Ramsay and Le Bordeaux Gordon Ramsay

I don’t go totally gaga over too many celebrities, but I’ve been a longtime fan of the foul-mouthed Gordon Ramsay. How excited was I when I learned his restaurant group would be taking over both restaurants at Intercontinental Bordeaux? Pretty much over the moon.

Tim and I have eaten at Gordon Ramsay restaurants around the world, including the now closed Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s in London, Gordon Ramsay Plane Food , Gordon Ramsay Steak in Las Vegas and Maze Grill in London. Now I can add his Michelin-starred Le Pressoir d’Argent and Brasserie Le Bordeaux Gordon Ramsay to our list.

Le Bordeaux Gordon Ramsay

Brasserie Le Bordeaux Gordon Ramsay takes the specialties of the south west of France and adds a British twist. I was thrilled to see probably Ramsay’s most well-known dish, beef wellington, on the menu and it was just as delicious as the previous times we’ve had it.

No matter whether you choose Brasserie Le Bordeaux Gordon Ramsay or splurge on a Michelin-starred meal at Le Pressoir d’Argent, you certainly won’t be disappointed with the Bordelais meets British fare.

Intercontinental Bordeaux Grand Hotel

The Spa at Intercontinental is a gem. The design is inspired by Roman baths and has an indoor swimming pool, which is the only hotel pool in the city center. Believe me, when you’ve been touring all day in the summer heat that indoor pool can be heaven.

Intercontinental Bordeaux Grand Hotel

The spa also has steam rooms and a sauna. But not just any sauna – remember that incredible view I gushed about? The sauna has a picture window so you can take it in while you sweat out your impurities. We’ve seen our share of saunas and honestly never one with a view.

I couldn’t squeeze in a visit for a spa treatment when I stayed at Intercontinental Bordeaux during my apartment hunting trips because of my long to-do list, but I booked myself a 75-minute full body massage after I moved to Bordeaux. The massage was fantastic with just the perfect amount of pressure. It was just what I needed after lugging boxes and furniture on countless trips up the stairs while I moved in.

Intercontinental Bordeaux Grand Hotel

5. The Rooms

Intercontinental Bordeaux isn’t just grand from the outside. The rooms, each uniquely designed with their own colors and interior design, make you feel like what I imagine you’d feel like staying in the Palace of Versailles. Rich fabrics adorn the furniture, beds and walls. Yet, I still felt right at home.

The rooms are spacious too, which is also a find in a historic center of the European city. My executive room had a king size bed, a seating area and a desk which was perfect since I’ve always got work to do even when traveling. There’s a complimentary Nespresso and an assortment of Nespresso capsules along with tea. There’s also a variety of movies available for rent, which are available to watch as many times as you like in a 24 hour period.

The marble bathroom has heated floors and a separate shower and bath. I’m always a fan of rain showers. There’s also a separate toilet closet, which is very common (and practical!) in France.

The spa was all you article implied and more. I opted for a leg message after a long day of sightseeing and was not disappointed. I also splurged on a much needed nail treatment which was not only so relaxing to my tired feet but a must for my sandals. As you said the view from the top is spectacular. If going to Bordeaux I would certainly put this on my bucket list.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the spa!

Intercontinental hotels are some of the best. We ate at Gordon Ramsay’s at Claridges once and we too share your enthusiasm for him. Not just a celebrity chef but a real one who can cook. Great insightful website.

August 17, 2016 at 8:30 PM

Thanks Paul! I’ve had lunch at Le Bistro Gordon Ramsay again since I wrote this and this time tried the strawberry and tomato gazpacho. So flavorful and refreshing on a hot summer day! I’m always blown away dining at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant.

December 11, 2016 at 2:08 AM

That’s a top quality hotel. The Roman bath inspired swimming pool really caught my attention – amazing design for a pool.

That beef wellington was clearly looking at me! I saw it.

Need to visit Bordeaux soon!

Staying at the Intercontinental Bordeaux while in one of the most beautiful cities in the world sounds just heavenly! Enjoying a beef wellington and taking in the spa after a long day of exploring the city is too perfect. Thanks for putting this on my radar, I’m now dreaming of swimming in that pool!

This place looks amazing!. Bordeaux is one destiny I wouldn’t mind visiting, and being able to stay in a place like this would be dreamy. From the room to that spa, it all seems very impressive. Also, wouldn’t mind to have a meal at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. But only if he was there and didn’t scream at me 😉

December 11, 2016 at 11:52 PM

Bordeaux is the only remaining part of France I haven’t done properly and so it’s on our list next time we are over there. I am keeping note of places that pop up in the area, This will be one of them for sure. Such amazing food! How good does that soft egg in the broth look!! The room actually looks quite English to me.

December 12, 2016 at 6:47 AM

The Intercontinental Bordeaux Grand Hotel looks lovely, I haven’t stayed at any Intercontinental properties but this may change now that I have seem the Bordeaux hotel. The Roman bath swimming pool looks fantastic.

The food at the Gordon Ramsay restaurant also looks delicious.

That sauna with a view must be absolute heaven. I’m really interested in those private wine tours, they must have connections to some really amazing Bordeaux wineries.

And the food at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant looks delectable.

Wondering where to stay in Bordeaux for the best experience?

I loved everything about my recent accommodations in this city, so if you’re looking for where to stay in Bordeaux I have the perfect recommendation. For an unbeatable location, fabulous amenities and true comfort book your stay at InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel.

🏨 Check prices and availability for your dates at the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel

As a first-time visitor to Bordeaux, the InterContinental Bordeaux turned out to be the perfect base from which to explore the heart of the city. This 5-star property packs history, beauty, convenience and gourmet experiences together for the ideal experience in the southwest of France.

Where to Stay in Bordeaux

As you explore the best area to stay in Bordeaux, and the best hotel, you’re likely wondering:

Lobby of InterContinental Bordeaux

What is the best district to stay in Bordeaux?

The Triangle d’Or (Golden Triangle) district is one of the best areas to stay in Bordeaux due to its beautiful architecture, historic structures and central location.

What is the most beautiful street in Bordeaux?

Bordeaux showcases many lovely streets, one of the most popular being Rue Sainte Catherine.

What is the famous square in Bordeaux?

Place de la Bourse is the most iconic square in Bordeaux. It is part of the Port of the Moon – a UNESCO World Heritage site. What makes the plaza even more stunning is seeing it reflected in the reflecting pool, Le Miroir d’Eua (note, it tends to be off during the winter season) .

Reviewing the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel

On my visit to Bordeaux, I enjoyed my stay at the InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel for many reasons:

Top Location

A street view in Bordeaux, France

As a first-timer to any new city, I prioritize staying as centrally as possible. Especially if you’re visiting Bordeaux for the first time, I strongly recommend you stay at InterContinental Bordeaux for its prime location.

The hotel is located on the Place de la Comédie in Bordeaux, a square that also houses the Grand Théâtre just across from the hotel.

The popular shopping street, Rue Sainte Catherine, also runs directly off of this main square. Place de la Bourse is less than a 5-minute walk away, and most other key monuments are within a 15-minute walk.

There are two tram stops, one on either side of the hotel, that make it easy to reach areas further out. I easily made my way to and from the train station to the hotel via tram, as well as to the Cité du Vin (wine museum).

All paths seem to lead right back to the Place de la Comédie and Le Grand Hôtel, making it easy to wander aimlessly through the lively surrounding streets without ever getting lost.

I loved being able to step outside of the quiet hotel straight into the bustling energy of the city, just as much as I enjoyed returning to the property’s relaxing ambience after exploring.

Alluring History

Exterior view of Intercontinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel

Over the course of a century, the building that is now InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel was first a private mansion and later a hotel. It was built by Victor Louis, the same mind behind the beautiful Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux across the way.

For a period of time, the hotel sat closed and abandoned before undergoing its transformation into the 5-star property it is today.

To go beyond witnessing a historic building and actually stay in one, adds a special element to any Bordeaux visit.

Splendid Rooms

I was pleasantly surprised to have been upgraded to a premium room with Opera view when I arrived, and to have my room ready for me even though I was checking in a couple hours early.

Based on photos, I was expecting a beautiful room and was not disappointed. I let out an awe-filled sigh when I entered my room – there was so much to take in.

The design elements all worked together to exude opulence as the tall windows beckoned me over to take in the view outside.

A premium room with Opera view at InterContinental Bordeaux is a great place if you're considering where to stay in Bordeaux

The rooms at InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel were designed by world-famous French interior designer, Jacques Garcia, and they’re really something to see.

Beyond the premium room, which was perfect for me, I learned that the property also offers a variety of suites.

The most epic, in my opinion, are the wine bar suites . These allow the perfect setup for in-room wine tastings. What better way to celebrate a special occasion in Bordeaux?

Beyond accommodations, this property is also popular for hosting wedding events and business meetings with dedicated spaces for gathering.

Foodie Paradise

Pressoir Argent Gordon Ramsey restaurant in Bordeaux is a 2-Michelin star restaurant

While there are plenty of great restaurants in the city of Bordeaux, you won’t have to go far for a gourmet feast when you stay at InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel.

If you make your plans early enough, you might be lucky enough to get a coveted seat at the hotel’s onsite two-Michelin-starred restaurant: Le Pressoir d’Argent Gordon Ramsay.

The restaurant is called The Silver Press because of its use of a solid silver lobster press (one of only five in the world) each night to extract juices from blue lobsters as part of its signature menu.

This restaurant seats only 25 people each evening, so book in advance for the experience.

Le Bordeaux restaurant is another great dining option, located on the ground floor of the hotel. I enjoyed a lovely dinner here featuring an inventive, well-plated and delicious spread.

During the day, enjoy a snack, beverage, or full on afternoon tea at The Orangerie. The afternoon tea here is inspired by a perfume collection by the House of Guerlain – one of France’s top luxury brands.

In the evening, spend some time in a speakeasy-like environment at Victor Bar. Its discreet entrance is located just outside of The Orangerie.

If you prefer, the hotel also offers room service at all hours.

Spa Guerlain at Le Bordeaux Intercontinental hotel

Take a break from exploring Bordeaux to indulge in treatments at the Guerlain Spa. Choose from beauty and wellbeing, body or facial treatments as you lean into the French art of living.

Importantly, bring a swimsuit so you can enjoy the spectacular relaxation pool. Fitted with massage jets and nozzles, this pool by Jacques Garcia is not to be missed.

Impressive Views

Rooftop views from InterContinental Bordeaux

The rooftop at InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel has been awarded for having the best view from any hotel rooftop in Bordeaux, multiple times. Enjoy panoramic views over the city, as you take in all of the top monuments.

No matter the season, you’ll have access to this beautiful rooftop. In the summer, enjoy an open-air rooftop restaurant. In the winter, enjoy a romantic wine bar under the stars known as In the Moon for Wine .
