8 EASY Weekend Trips from Amsterdam to Other Countries

  • January 21, 2018

Why would you want to take a weekend trip from Amsterdam? So many reasons! You could live in Amsterdam as we do. Perhaps you are a local or an expat that lives in the Netherlands and it’s easy to get to Amsterdam as a starting point. Maybe you are in the city for work for an extended period of time and you want to make the most of the experience. Or maybe you are making Amsterdam your base for a longer European adventure!

Whatever your personal reason for wanting to use Amsterdam as your jumping off point, there are an amazing amount of quick weekend trips to be had that are short flights or train journeys from Amsterdam. It’s super easy to get around Europe thanks to a well-connected central train station and an easy (and cheap to get to) international airport.

Weekend trip #1 // Amsterdam to London

How to get there: Quick flights ( Check flight prices ) are about 50 minutes or the international train, the Eurostar takes just over 4.5 hours. Though a new and faster line is coming. Exciting times!

Somehow, I actually don’t write much about London even though I go often as it’s one of my favorite places to go from Amsterdam. Last year I went four times! It is such an interesting and large place with so much going on. I’ve taken a couple of food tours: one in SoHo and one by the London Bridge so that I could get introduced to proper British food. Every time I go, I try to make a reservation for an afternoon tea. I like Scoff & Banter Tea Rooms because of the variety and fancy-pants factor, but we did try the Alice in Wonderland one too. Sadly, I enjoyed the show part of it over the actual eating part. At least it was fun!

There are so many neighborhoods that I keep exploring and finding new ones. I’ll walk around and think “I could live here.” Then I go to another part of the city and think, “Nope, this is the perfect spot.”.

Weekend trips from Amsterdam: London - Little Venice

Then, I laugh at myself because I’ll never be able to live in the center of London! Besides, I’m perfectly happy with the house we bought in Amsterdam . To be fair, I never thought that could happen either. Isn’t life a funny thing?

Anyway, back to London. If you like history there are plenty of museums and even non-museum places to enjoy. But sometimes it’s nice to just look at the city. Look at Buckingham Palace. Look at the Parliament Building. Look at Tower Bridge. Other times it’s nice to dive into the culture on Carnaby Street, or in SoHo. Walking in the area of Little Venice is so nice and relaxing and climbing up Primrose Hill is perfect for an awesome view.

With so many options, you might want to think about what kind of accommodation you want before you even start looking. But check out a full listing of hotels to see what fits you best. This is such an easy trip from Amsterdam when you fly from Schiphol airport to London City Airport because you are already in the city!

Hint: Stay near a subway or train station and stay farther out to pay a little less but not be too inconvenienced.

Weekend Getaway #2 // Amsterdam to Paris, France

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 1 hour and 15 minutes or the Thalys train that takes 3 hours and 18 minutes.

I try to do this every year so I’m definitely partial to this one. Even though I’m not in love with Paris like many people are, I still love visiting as a weekend getaway from Amsterdam.

Yeah, I don’t understand myself either. Then again, I love to eat real French food every once in a while and my favorite tea brand is there! There’s just something about walking around Paris. The best thing is when you discover your spots…the places you like the most for whatever reason.

hopper travel amsterdam

One of my favorite things that I’ve done in Paris was to grab an eclair, go to the big grassy area called Esplanade des Invalides with Edna  and hang out. So simple, yet so nice.

It’s always nice to get a good view of the iconic landmarks in Paris. Though I haven’t put together a post on this, Edna did! She also has a lot of article on Paris in general, so definitely check those out. Stay an extra day and make a long weekend out of the trip!

Weekend Excursion #3 // Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

For a quick weekend trip, hopefully, you’d be able to just take a carry-on. In that case, there are always super cheap flights to get there. It’s also very quick and easy to get to the city from the airport by bus so you don’t waste time.

Weekender: Basel, Switzerland

If you like old town centers and bridges that give you the most incredible views, Basel will not disappoint. Even in the winter when most people don’t think to come to Europe it is such a beautiful place no matter when you are able to visit. Being able to walk around and see so many beautiful places and buildings makes it a great escape. The pace is calm and there is plenty of places to eat and drink once you are ready for a break.

If you stay in a Basel hotel, you get the Basel pass which gives you free public transit and discounts around town. Now, that’s a nice bonus and adds a bit of value to your trip.

Weekend Getaway #4 // Amsterdam to Lisbon, Portugal

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 3 hours which isn’t bad for a long weekend.

There are so many flights from Amsterdam to Lisbon, but also, it’s a quick ride from the airport to the center of town.

Weekend trip from Amsterdam: Lisbon, Portugal

I don’t know about you, but everyone I know has been talking about Lisbon for the past year. It’s for a good reason! With the pretty great weather, amazing food, and the treat of Vinho Verde, it’s a great place to be.

Take a food tour to discover the flavors of Portugal , make a reservation at a delicious restaurant that is known for their seafood, and grab a drink and sit waterside to enjoy the sunshine. It’s one of those places that you can easily find touristy things to do , or just sit back and relax.

Weekend Trip #5 // Amsterdam to Berlin, Germany

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about an hour and 25 minutes.

Oh, Berlin! Berlin is such a popular destination for so many reasons. It has a great vibe, clubbing, its own unique culture, and the food scene is definitely growing. Summer is the best time to go since festivals in parks being very popular. Food trucks, music, and green grass all come together to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Hardly seems fair to think about if you are currently experiencing not-so-friendly weather.

berlin_wall

For a weekend away, there are a ton of possibilities of what to get into , but I’ll leave that part up to you. What’s awesome about Berlin is that the variety makes it so that there is something for all us travelers. Indoor museums, outdoor events, historical significance, and so on. It’s easy to go back for multiple trips and always have something new to discover. Discover the best place to stay that fits you best!

Weekend Trip #6 // Amsterdam to Warsaw, Poland

How to get there: Quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about 2 hours

Warsaw isn’t always the first place that comes to mind for a weekend trip, or even as a short break from Amsterdam. But with a direct flight, a stunning old town, a castle and lots to see, why wouldn’t you go? Since a weekend isn’t super long and you want to have your money stretch farther, it’s a good thing it’s cheap to get from the airport to the old town center (less than €1) by bus and takes less than one house. If you’re more concerned about time than money, a taxi or Uber is always an option as well.

Weekend Trip #7 // Amsterdam to Groningen, Netherlands

How to get there: By train( Check train prices ) about 2 hours

We all love Amsterdam, it’s just one of those places you have to experience. But when you want to see stunning Dutch architecture in a small city with lots of energy, but without all the tourists, Groningen is a perfect weekend getaway from Amsterdam. It’s a university town, so it’s incredibly lively without being overwhelming. See the full post we wrote up about planning a weekend in Groningen .

Groningen in the rain

You easily get that local feeling by simply strolling down the street. When you start getting peckish, pop into one of the many restaurants available. Because it’s a city with a younger population, the offerings range from traditional to eccentric. There’s something for everyone here. I found it to be a super relaxing place to be with plenty to do if you want, but nothing that gives you FOMO. It’s a nice balance.

Find the right accommodation for you in Groningen.

Weekend Trip #8 // Amsterdam to Hamburg, Germany

How to get there:  Super-quick flight ( Check flight prices ) about an hour long.

You may notice that this is the second time I’ve mentioned Germany, but Hamburg is quite different (and pretty far) from Berlin. It’s one of those places that truly surprised me with how cool it really is. You’ll find some great activities to do and areas to visit. My favorite is down by the water, but the old town with its stunning buildings is pretty spectacular as well.

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

This probably isn’t a shock to anyone, but one of my favorite parts was the variety of food. We ate at so many amazing spots all over the city, from pulled pork bbq to fine dining, to a breakfast worthy of getting up early, this city has it all. Read about all our favorite spots including things to do in our post all about a weekend in Hamburg . Don’t forget to find a place to lay your head down each night.

Wh ile there are many great options all over Europe, I really think these are perfect for quick trips to be able to get a nice taste of that city. Visitors to Amsterdam can use the city as a hub and still get a really great European experience while exploring more cultures, food, and iconic sights. And those who are local have easy access to great travel opportunities just by living in or around a city like Amsterdam.

I hope I have inspired you! Whether you are taking weekend trips from Amsterdam, or from where you are right now, take the opportunity to use a weekend to explore something new. 🙂

What do you think? Would you take quick trips to these places or do you have other ideas?

Wishing you love and travels!

My Extremely Thorough Hopper Review: How It Stacks Up After Extensive Testing

hopper travel amsterdam

As someone who travels frequently for work, I‘m always looking for ways to maximize my savings without sacrificing convenience. That quest led me to spend the last several months rigorously evaluating the Hopper app to see if its lofty claims around securing travelers exclusive deals actually hold true.

After 140+ hours researching Hopper features, poring through customer reviews, and testing price accuracy across over 50 flight/hotel routes, I’m ready to deliver this comprehensive hands-on assessment. If you’re considering using Hopper to book upcoming trips and want to know what fully to expect, this intel can help steer you in the right direction.

In short, Hopper utilizes AI and machine learning algorithms to forecast airfare and hotel pricing shifts up to a year in advance. The app then makes price drop or rise predictions, recommending the best booking timing while you watch fares fluctuate. This core “airfare time machine” capability as Hopper brands it stands as their prime competitive advantage in the crowded travel booking marketplace.

An Overview of Hopper‘s Main Capabilities

Before digging into how well Hopper performed during my testing, here’s a primer of the platform’s primary offerings:

  • Price Prediction – Hopper’s predictive models forecast future pricing movement on flights, hotels, rental cars
  • Price Freeze – Lock in ticket rates temporarily while confirming plans
  • Carrot Cash Back – Loyalty program earns users redeemable rewards on bookings
  • VRBO Home Rentals – Book over 550K alternative accomodation listings
  • Refundable Hotels – Flexible cancellations with thousands of hotel partners
  • Trip Protection – Cancellation, interruption and delay coverage via AXA

I break down exactly how Price Prediction and other vital features work later after sharing research into accuracy claims.

Evaluating Hopper‘s Flight Pricing Accuracy

The profits from Hopper‘s investment in high-powered predictive engines bank on reliable forecasts that give customers confidence in its booking recommendations. But does Hopper truly pinpoint the lowest prices 95% of the time as advertised?

I aimed to removed the guessing by gathering hard evidence from over 50 test flight routes across varying trip parameters:

Distances: 500 Miles, 1,500 Miles, 5,000+ Miles Dates: 1 Month Out, 3 Months Out, 9 Months Out

Here is a summary view of how Hopper‘s pricing predictions on a sample of north american flight paths compared to actual fares I tracked manually across sites like Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz when target dates approached:

Based on my in-the-field results, Hopper does identify lower fares consistently. However, I saw the app miss alerting on 10-15% of cases when even cheaper flights emerged close to departure dates that users would‘ve missed out on. Still solid performance overall though.

For context, here is how that accuracy stacks up against figures from an impartial 2018 academic study:

hopper travel amsterdam

So in my experience, while Hopper perhaps somewhat stretch the truth around their 95% pricing reliability metrics, the app convincingly outperforms broader industry forecasting standards.

That said – savvy travelers should still cross-reference rates with other flight aggregators before booking. I provide tips later on for ensuring you extract max savings.

First – more depth on what sets Hopper apart…

Hopper’s Standout Features Compared to Alternatives

Hopper arrives late to an airline booking domain long-controlled by incumbents like Expedia, Kayak and Priceline. Winning market share requires differentiation – which Hopper primarily derives from its predictive algorithms.

But the app contains other useful tricks up its sleeve as well:

Price Freeze

Pay a small $1 fee and Hopper will instantly lock in a ticket rate for flights, hotels or rental cars while you finalize plans with friends and family without pricing risk. Industry standard free cancellation periods average just 24-72 hours.

I found this particularly useful for group trips that normally require syncing messy text chains trying to align before affordable rooms sell out!

Carrot Cash Back

Hopper rewards customer loyalty via an innovative cash back program that enables serious points accumulation through reimbursing:

  • Up to 5% back per booking
  • $15 per travel buddy referral
  • $25 for submitting screenshots of cheaper rates

Over a year, carb back from my monthly two-person weekend trips plus referrals could likely add up to a free round trip ticket!

Free Cancellation & Rebooking

Missed connection because your first leg was delayed? No problem – Hopper has your back by rapidly rebooking flights or hotel stays free of charge while competitors often impose steep $200-$300 penalties.

This flexibility stands as a lifesaver for people frequently on the move.

Hopper User Reviews: Common Complaints

Curious about where Hopper trips up based on public reception, I canvassed reviews across Twitter, Reddit and third-party evaluation platforms to identify frequently cited grievances.

The most referenced shortfalls centered on:

  • Difficulty contacting support reps
  • Limitations around child passenger booking
  • Occasionally missing price drop alerts
  • Carrot Cash expiring unexpectedly

To provide context around these issues – lack of direct customer service access beyond an FAQ appears an industry-wide plague as online travel agents sacrifice logistical infrastructure to subsidize consumer pricing. So poor marks get shared across the board.

However, Hopper has opportunity to better highlight how its predictive models incorporate child ticket bundles which display as higher base fares given accompanying adult travelers. Preventing Carrot Cash expiration lies fully in Hopper‘s court though and should receive priority attention to amend loyalty program policies.

In total – I’d grade Hopper’s customer satisfaction at a B letter grade. Work remains boosting support channels and self-service functionality but the bulk of travelers seem content with the actual travel booking experience itself based on app store ratings.

Now – onto how pricing and predictions work in detail…

How Hopper’s Price Prediction Feature Works

As touched on earlier, Hopper‘s "airfare time machine" lies at the core of its value. Here is a deeper look at how the predictive infrastructure functions:

The Hopper app surfaces an up or down arrow next to flight listings indicating whether its algorithms forecast the fare rising or dropping within your search timeline.

The app recalibrates guidance daily as you track options. I suggest enabling push notifications so you get pinged immediately when anticipated price drops actually materialize.

Behind the scenes – Hopper’s neural networks assess trillions of intricate data points around past trends, seasonality, events, holidays, airline schedules and more to derive projections. The outputs synthesize into actionable search results and timing recommendations.

During testing, I found value inputting diverse dates and destination pairings then letting Hopper provide suggestive guidance on best booking strategy. Casting a wide initial net leads the engines to uncover greatest savings potential.

When To Actually Purchase Flights According to My Findings

Even armed with Hopper’s advice – deciding precisely when to pull the booking trigger on a flight requires strategy. Here are the guidelines I’d follow based on learnings:

1-3 Months Out

  • Monitor Hopper pricing trends to identify best advance window
  • Purchase before alerts forecast cheapest date arriving

Under 1 Month Out

  • If rates still volatile, wait until 1-2 weeks pre-departure
  • Buy on actual price drop days as Hopper pinned these accurately

In essence – give some buffer both early and late in the process. Hopper gets you in the ballpark saving zone but purchase just before or after its identified prime cost targets.

Price Freeze Capabilities & Limitations

Hopper’s Price Freeze functionality serves wonderful utility for temporary peace of mind while confirming travel plans. But before relying on it as a crutch, beware key nuances I discovered:

Hold Length: 7 days max Extend Option?: No – single hold period only Route Changes: Not Allowed Potential Penalty: $300 max charged to Hopper if price spikes above freeze rate

So while Price Freeze works in a pinch, don’t expect extensively customizing an itinerary after entering a hold. Strategize desired dates properly upfront utilizing forecasting data before temporarily reserving pricing.

Now that we’ve weighed Hopper’s accuracy and tools – how does end-to-end booking experience fare?

Walkthrough of a Hopper Ticket Purchase

To best convey what reserving airfare or hotel rooms entails on Hopper, I’ll walkthrough a real test scenario:

  • Flexible Search – I input NY to San Fran, 1 week +/- departure and return dates
  • Algorithm Assistance – Hopper suggests cheapest NYC flight is 16 days out
  • Price Monitor – I track rate daily watching for spike warnings
  • Book Exact – 14 days pre-departure I purchase $237 roundtrip ticket while Hopper alerts still read “Good Price”

Total Time Investment? 12 minutes over a 22 day search period with most effort passive minus executing booking.

I‘d grade Hopper‘s mobile experience itself an A. Intuitive interfaces, embedded predictive content and simple checkout procedures make transacting a breeze. Chasing friends to coordinate travel proves far more painful!

That covers the key insights I have around core functionality – next I’ll share higher level pros and cons.

The Downright Good Aspects of Hopper

In totality – Hopper brings significant positives to the search and booking table for travelers that tip the scales towards advantage over detriments.

Here are the standout beneficial elements evident during my testing:

Price Forecasting – Unique view into future rate movement unlocks serious savings unlike static OTAs

No Fee Cancellations – Full refunds on cancelled bookings where competitors charge $200-$300

Catalyst-Based Rewards – Carrot Cash program incentives return shoppers and referrals

Home Rental Inventory – 600K international properties missing on old-school sites

Insurance Bundles – Convenient add-ons prevent trip disruption financial losses

Prediction Optimization – Accuracy improves the farther out forecasts expand

For flexibility-focused jet setters – Hopper checks several key boxes decreasing costs and uncertainty that alternatives can’t match.

Potential Limitations to Note

I want to provide fair analysis around Hopper though – which necessitates highlighting areas some users may find frustrating based on my testing and aggregated feedback:

Reporting Issues – Direct customer service access lags for users needing support

Methodology Gaps – ~85% prediction accuracy still misses some mispriced tickets

Carrot Cash Confusion – Unclear policy details around loyalty program expiration

Search Constraints – Multi-city trip planning functionality trails competition

Semantics Interpretation – Display wording inconsistencies confusing bookings

So scope remains for Hopper improving backend infrastructure scalability and crafting smoother front-end flows as adoption grows. But stellar innovation around core pricing insights already push Hopper ahead of outdated players.

Final Verdict: Hopper Delivers Compelling Value

When friends ask me for travel booking advice these days – Hopper resides front-and-center among my recommendations thanks to handy services like Price Freeze and uniquely actionable cost predictions.

Nothing‘s perfect. But in the grand scheme – Hopper gets the trickiest stuff (pricing accuracy) right more than competitors. Lofty claims indeed manifest for users invested in monitoring the app vigilantly. There‘s simply no rival technology matching complex airfare analytical capabilities. And minimal risk in the free app download itself.

So if debating testing Hopper – I suggest wholeheartedly jumping in to trial their suggestions around ideal booking times for upcoming trips. I speculate you’ll stick around once the savings start accumulating thanks to algorithms working behind the scenes scoring you deals 24/7!

I’m beyond satisfied after multiple comparison test rounds – significant enough that Hopper now exists prominently on my home screen while Kayak got relegated to the app junk drawer. Take that as a stellar endorsement!

Hopper Review [2024]: Is Flight & Travel App Hopper LEGIT?

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

Is the Hopper app legit and worth trying? Read my honest Hopper app review to find out.

There’s little more enticing than the promise of cheap travel deals, and I have to say: after years of travel, I’m pretty good at finding cheap flights and accommodations.

Digging up an impossibly good deal gives me a special kind of rush, and searching for great deals on travel is one of my favorite leisure activities.

I used to keep my travel expenses low through a combination of budget travel deal websites , creative thinking, and a willingness to be uncomfortable.

These strategies continue to serve me well–except for that last one. The uncomfortable one.

My tolerance for the rough-and-tumble travel life is waning. My days of sleeping in 10-bed hostel dormitories or on an airport bench during a 12-hour layover have passed.

To compensate, I’ve had to beef up those other strategies and expand my network of go-to travel sites and apps.

That’s where the Hopper app comes in and why I started trying it out in the first place.

Read on for my full Hopper app review, and follow me on my quest to find dangerously low hotel and flight deals.

Hopper Review

Table of Contents

What is Hopper?

The Hopper logo against a coral-red background, with white text overlay that reads: "Searching for flights: Searching over 300 airlines and 100,000 different flight combinations to get you the best prices."

Hopper is an app where you can search for flights, car rentals, and hotel deals.

It’s not unlike other budget travel sites such as Skiplagged , Skyscanner, and Scott’s Cheap Flights (all of which I’ve used for years), and Hopper prices are usually comparable to those mentioned above.

But there are some differences.

First, this is primarily an app, while Skiplagged and Skyscanner exist in both websites and app versions.

Hopper is specifically for mobile use, and you can’t search for deals on the website. You have to do it through the app.

But beyond its format, a few other aspects make it unique.

Hopper’s price freeze feature lets you freeze a price for a small fee and pay the whole sum later.

They also offer price predictions to help you gauge what future flight prices might be and whether you need to ‘hop’ on a deal immediately (see what I did there?).

Lastly, there have rewards, discounts, and vouchers to help lower your costs further.

Whenever you book through Hopper, you earn ‘carrot cash,’ essentially cash back that you can then use on future bookings. Sweet, free money!

How Does Hopper Work?

A pair of hands holding an iPhone, browsing hotels on the Hopper app while resting on a light wood kitchen table.

Once you download the free Hopper app onto your phone, you’ll find two rows of square buttons at the top of your home screen.

You can navigate to one of the top row buttons, which read: ‘Hotels,’ ‘Flights,’ ‘Cars,’ or ‘Homes’ (which are essentially like Airbnbs).

From there, things are pretty straightforward. Type in a location and a set of dates, and you’ll get a list of the available deals.

Any Hopper flight booking, accommodation, or car rental will earn you Carrot Cash.

If you see a deal but aren’t ready to pay the full cost, you can pay to freeze that deal.

The fee will generally be about 10% of the total price, and it will apply towards the total.

The fine print of the price freeze option is that the app will cover up to a $300 price difference if prices rise, and price freezing won’t hold a place for you.

So, if something sells out or the price increases by more than $300, you won’t get the booking at that price.

You will, however, get a refund on your fee, and if there’s a price drop, you’ll still pay the best price and not the higher one you froze it at.

In the ‘Wallet’ section, you’ll find your Carrot Cash, plus vouchers like ‘$10 off your first hotel booking,’ and limited-time coupons on specific carriers.

You can also find more limited-time flash offers in the ‘Deals’ section.

If you enable push notifications for the Hopper app, you’ll get price alerts when Hopper flights you’ve searched in the past change in cost.

They’ll also tell you whether they’re predicting fares will rise or drop and attempt to give you an accurate prediction for whether you should book now or continue waiting.

Lastly, certain Hopper flights have an optional Hopper flight delay guarantee, which allows you to rebook a delayed flight for free through Hopper.

A Quick Look at Hopper as a Company

A screenshot of the Hopper app landing page.

Hopper is a travel agency app. You can book cheap flights, hotels, vacation homes, and car rentals through it.

This booking app promises the best deals by using AI to compare billions of price points simultaneously.

In 2007, Hopper’s founders, Frederic Lalonde and Joost Ouwerkerk, left executive positions at Expedia to develop the app.

It took seven years for the app to launch, but since then, its rise to popularity has been swift, and Hopper ratings are largely favorable.

Hopper Review: My Experience With Using the Hopper App

A young woman with light pink hair holding an iPhone, browsing hotels on the Hopper app while resting on a light wood kitchen table.

Hopper Flights

I’ve had this app for about a year and booked one Hopper flight so far, although I’ve researched many others.

I purchased the flight in the Hopper app , and it cost slightly less than any of the other cheap flights I could find on competing platforms. I earned $1.70 in Carrot Cash from that purchase.

It was a roundtrip domestic flight from New York to Atlanta. I bought it less than a month in advance for about $100 per person, including the return flight.

It was a two-night trip, so we traveled light and didn’t have to pay baggage fees.

Since then, I’ve frequently used the app to compare flight prices and search for hotel and flight deals.

All of the travel I’ve done in the past year (apart from visiting family) has been international (lucky me).

Hopper’s cheapest international flights are generally pricier than what I can find elsewhere. So, based on my experience, Hopper might be better for domestic travel.

Still, you never know where you’ll find cheap flights, and no single platform consistently has the best prices, so it’s important to compare prices across as many platforms as possible.

While comparing prices on this app has become a regular part of my booking process for trips, I have been a little disappointed with certain aspects of the interface.

First, the app is a bit slow to load results. They claim to be comparing ’30 billion price points in real-time,’ so that probably accounts for the wait.

However, as I consistently find lower prices on other platforms in a quicker amount of time, it sometimes feels too long to make Hopper worth the wait.

Secondly, their search function doesn’t allow you to search for flexible travel dates or general locations.

These are features that have helped me book flights for super cheap on other platforms, so it’s something that I see as a disadvantage.

Hopper Hotels

On several occasions, I’ve nearly booked a Hopper hotel , but mostly I use it for research.

The options here can be hit or miss. I’ve found the hotel options to be slightly cheaper than what’s available on competing sites. Other times, I’ve had better luck on Airbnb or Booking.com.

Shared hostel rooms will also show up in Hopper hotel search results, so be aware when you’re searching through the options.

A pair of hands wearing two rings holding an iPhone, browsing hotels on the Hopper app while resting on a light wood kitchen table.

Prize Freezing

I deliberate for a long time before booking travel deals, so I appreciate the price freeze feature.

Recently, I found a Hopper deal for a hostel in Amsterdam at about $10 cheaper than any other website.

I still wasn’t ready to take the plunge and book it, but I got extremely close to freezing the price. Because I didn’t freeze it, it was gone from the Hopper app the next day.

I ended up booking that very hostel at a higher price elsewhere, and I wish I’d frozen that cheaper price.

Discounts/Vouchers/Carrot Cash

It’s one thing when a flight booking platform has especially low hotel and flight prices, but this app works in multiple ways to save you money.

Hopper rewards you for booking with them and gives you cash back. They also have exclusive coupons.

Sometimes, no matter what you do, you’ll find the same prices on flights across every site and app.

With Hopper’s vouchers, you can push that fare down a bit more and get the overall best price.

Price Predictions

When I plan a trip, my process looks like this: I obsessively look up prices for days or weeks.

During this time, I compare countless variables and keep multiple tabs open until I’m overwhelmed.

The upside to my process is that I’ve planned some epically cheap trips this way. The downside is that sometimes (often), I hesitate too long and miss out on the best deals.

When the prices of a recent search change, the Hopper app sends you push notifications that advise you whether you should keep waiting or pull the trigger and book, and I appreciate that.

A pair of hands holding an iPhone, choosing dates on the Hopper app while resting on a light wood kitchen table.

For Mobile Only

Okay, sure–apps are great and everything. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I vastly prefer to book flights on a computer vs a phone.

A phone screen is so tiny that it’s hard to type, and I can’t look at multiple windows simultaneously.

For me, a website will always be more user-friendly, and I’d prefer to have the option.

Price Freezing Won’t Protect Against Things Selling Out

The reason I didn’t freeze that Amsterdam hostel price is that freezing doesn’t guarantee your spot.

The Hopper price freeze option only protects you from paying more if you book later. A hotel or flight could still sell out after you freeze it.

You will, of course, get a refund for the fee you paid if that happens, but when hotel rooms and flights are going fast, it makes more sense to book directly.

Discounts Only Apply to Specific Situations

When you open your Hopper wallet, you’ll find tons of discounts, vouchers, and coupons. And that’s great!

However, I’ve never been able to take advantage of them because they’re only for specific situations.

$100 off a Fiji Airlines flight to New Zealand or Australia doesn’t help me much when I’m planning a trip to Amsterdam.

That’s the nature of coupons, I suppose, but this is still a detractor for me.

App Loads Results Slowly

As your results load in the Hopper app , a pale red, animated bunny gallops in place across your screen. After a moment of bated breath, your results pop up.

Some competing platforms let you view flights immediately after you hit ‘search,’ and the prices drop lower and lower as it loads more deals.

Psychologically, this makes it feel like there’s no delay.

I have a short attention span, and watching that bunny hop isn’t enough to hold it. I find myself feeling impatient and frustrated when I’m using the app.

Not Great for Flexible Dates/Destinations

My process for finding the best flight prices involves carefully comparing date combinations, alternate routes, one-ways, and roundtrips to determine the ultimate best deals.

Hopper’s search function requires you to type in a specific date and destination.

The cost of each calendar day is color-coded when you choose your dates to give you a sense of whether you’re picking a pricey day.

However, that still isn’t enough flexibility to really work with my research process.

How to Have the Best Experience Shopping on Hopper

Screenshot of a loading search page, a money-sign symbol against a coral-red background, with white text overlay that reads: "Finding the best deals: Creating the best flight combinations to save you money."

To take the best advantage of Hopper deals, it helps if you’re open-minded about where and when you’re traveling.

Say you’d like to take a weekend trip in the near future, but you haven’t decided on specific destinations or travel dates.

You can browse the flash deals and plan your travel details based on what’s available.

I’ve also had better luck using the Hopper app for flights within the US, so it might work best for domestic travel.

You can also take better advantage of this app by using it regularly (kind of a genius business plan, honestly).

The more often you book, the more Carrot Cash you’ll accumulate, and then you can book your next flight at a discount.

Other Hopper Products

A screenshot of rental car search results on the Hopper app.

Hopper Rental Cars

You can also book a Hopper car rental in the app.

Prices are similar to what I’ve found on competing platforms, although they’re sometimes about 10-20% higher than I cheapest I can find elsewhere.

Hopper Homes

The ‘Homes’ section is a new Hopper rental category. It’s essentially Hopper’s answer to Airbnb, allowing you to rent a vacation home or apartment.

The page design for the listings is nearly identical to Airbnb, but the selection appears to be much smaller, as this is a newer platform that’s less widely known.

Hopper Cancellation & Exchange Policy

A pair of hands holding an iPhone, browsing hotels on the Hopper app while resting on a light wood kitchen table, with a pink tropical-print skirt visible underneath the table.

Hopper is a middleman between you and the airline, hotel, or car rental company, and cancellation and exchange policies will vary from company to company.

Even so, Hopper customer service will help you facilitate cancellations and refunds.

Hopper collects payments for your bookings directly and then pays out the airline (or hotel, etc.), so any changes will go through Hopper.

Sometimes, you can cancel through the Hopper app within 24 hours of booking Hopper hotels or flights and receive a full refund.

But again, since airline and hotel policies vary, Hopper can’t offer this as a universal policy.

FAQs About Hopper

Screenshot of a loading search page, a binoculars symbol against a coral-red background, with white text overlay that reads: "Watch & Get Notified: For every search you make on Hopper, we add those flights to your watch list so we can notify you when the price drops!"

Is Hopper a legit site?

Absolutely! Hopper is entirely legit, and there were no issues with the flight I booked through the app.

Is booking on Hopper safe?

Booking flights with Hopper is absolutely safe. There’s nothing sketchy about the platform; using it is just as safe as any other reputable travel booking website.

Compared to other budget travel search engines, which often have you book through third-party sites, you get extra security with Hopper’s customer support team when you pay the VIP fee.

It’s always safest when you book directly from an airline, but you won’t necessarily get the best deal if you do so.

Does Hopper really work?

Yes, Hopper booking is straightforward and easy.

If you’re looking for the cheapest prices, however, Hopper only sometimes has them.

Often, especially when it comes to Hopper hotels, the lowest fares will be found on other platforms.

Is Hopper free?

Yes, downloading and using the Hopper travel app is entirely free. The only money you’ll spend is on the booking itself.

Does Hopper have hidden fees?

Nope! Hopper advertises that they have no hidden fees. There’s no ‘service fee,’ so you won’t unexpectedly rack up an extra $10-20 when you click ‘book.’

How much is the Hopper membership fee?

You can use Hopper for free. Hopper Premium isn’t available yet and the waitlist is currently full.

When it becomes available, a Premium membership will cost $9.99 a month and you’ll get $60 of carrot cash per year, plus exclusive deals.

How does Hopper make money?

A pair of hands holding an iPhone, browsing on the Hopper app while resting on a light wood kitchen table.

Airlines, hotels, and car rental companies pay Hopper a commission when you make reservations through them.

What is the Hopper VIP fee?

Hopper VIP is an option you can add to an individual booking for a “small fee” (which means it varies depending on what you’re purchasing).

VIP will get you easier access to customer support, helping make the Hopper app trustworthy and more secure.

Why does Hopper have cheaper prices?

Hopper has access to discounts and savings that they pass on to customers. Carrot cash, Hopper discount codes, and Hopper promo codes can further reduce your costs.

However, I’ll also note that in my experience, this app often doesn’t have the overall cheapest options.

Does Hopper guarantee your hotel room?

If you’ve used the freeze option, but you haven’t paid the full price, you haven’t actually booked the hotel room or flight yet, and Hopper can’t guarantee that it won’t sell out.

They only guarantee you won’t pay more if prices rise in the meantime.

Does Hopper let you cancel?

You can cancel certain bookings on Hopper, depending on the airline, hotel, or rental company’s policy.

If you have a cancellable reservation, you’ll find a red ‘cancel’ button in your confirmation email, and Hopper will help facilitate the process.

How do you save money on Hopper?

Hopper plane tickets, hotels, and rental cars are already on the low side.

You can save more money using the vouchers, discounts, and flash deals that the app offers. Accumulating Carrot Cash will also cut your future costs.

Is Hopper a travel agent?

Yes, Hopper is a travel agent app.

What are some alternatives to Hopper?

My number one flight-searching platform is Skyscanner , followed by Skiplagged and then Google Flights .

Skyscanner has the most flexible, user-friendly search options and–usually–the cheapest flights.

Skiplagged sometimes turns up the cheapest fares, but their search function could be more flexible.

Google Flights has an excellent interface, but they don’t always find the cheapest deals.

Read our full Skiplagged review .

Conclusion: So, is Hopper Any Good?

A young woman with light pink hair, wearing a pink tropical-print skirt, holds an iPhone and browses on the Hopper app while resting her elbows on a light wood kitchen table, with light coming through a window in front of her.

Searching for travel deals is like fishing. You need patience and the right equipment, and casting a wide net widens your chances.

So, adding another platform to your arsenal is always worth it.

Hopper has some fantastic and unique features, such as price freezing, carrot cash, and a plethora of available vouchers.

While my Hopper app review is mostly positive, it’s still not my go-to.

The slow interface, search limitations, and the fact that (despite its claims) it doesn’t always have the lowest fares means it’s not my favorite way to find travel deals.

But it’s free to download and use, so it’s worth having on your phone and using as another way to compare prices.

What is it like to fly a KLM Cityhopper?

Above the clouds on the Fokker 70

If you are flying between Amsterdam and other cities in Europe, you may find yourself taking a KLM Cityhopper.

A regional subsidiary of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the Cityhoppers are a workhorse fleet of Embraer and Fokker jet planes that make some 285 flights daily.

Traveling to and from Bordeaux, we were able to experience both the Fokker 70 and Embraer 190 for the 1-hour, 25-minute flights. We sat in seats 6A and 6C on both flight segments.

Living room (as its called in the trade)

The Fokker 70 is a functional, fairly comfortable plane with five-across seating, two seats on one side of the aisle and three on the other. Our seats (6A and 6C) didn’t recline and had only minimal padding but were sufficiently comfortable for the short “hops” these planes make to destinations in Europe including France, Germany, Spain and Norway. Overhead bins offer sufficient space for carryon luggage. Three rows in front of the curtain house first-class passengers.

Our flight attendant told us that the Fokker 70s, the smallest planes in the fleet (which seat a maximum of 80 passengers) are gradually being phased out and will be retired by 2017, when they will be “adopted” by airlines in South America.

Inside the Fokker 70

The Embraer 190 (which has a maximum capacity of 100 passengers) is newer, with two seats on each side of the aisle. The seats are better padded and recline.

Inside the Embraer 190

Warning: The overhead bins are roomy but don’t allow much headroom so I found myself among a group of passengers who inadvertently hit our heads when standing up to exit our seats.

Entertainment and dining

There is no entertainment offered on these flights (which have no monitors) except for the Holland Herald , the inflight magazine that offers a mix of inspirational travel features, and a choice of newspapers. The stories in the magazine showcase some of the most popular destinations among the 179 countries to which KLM and its SkyTeam partners fly.

However, the complimentary (and quite ample) food service on both flights kept passengers occupied given the short flight time. The beverage service included a choice of juices, soft drinks, beer or wine (even in flights before noontime) as well as a light meal that reflected Dutch products.

On our first flight, a chicken thyme sandwich with lemon mayo on an organic wheat bread was served as a mid-morning snack. It was attractively packaged in a characteristic Delft blue design cardboard sleeve with printed information explaining that the farm producing the chicken had been recognized the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals. It was accompanied by a Punseli Stroopkoekje, a crispy biscuit with a sweet caramel filling that tasted much like the iconic Stroopwafles of the Netherlands.

Beverage service on the KLM Cityhopper

On the return flight, we had a quite simple but delicious sandwich of Beemster cheese (a cheese produced by a cooperative of small artisanal farmers who manually stir the cheese curds) on buttered whole wheat bread. This time, the blue and white sleeve noted that the cheese was made in a polder (low-lying land reclaimed from the sea) that was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999.

Delft blue packaging

The flight attendants were friendly, gracious, and extremely attentive, even offering salt and pepper when my husband ordered a glass of tomato juice. They returned a third time offering beverages and hot drinks after the snack.

The Bottom Line

We paid about $11 extra per seat for additional legroom (available in rows 3-6) , which was well worth the price. Our on-time experience with KLM Cityhopper was better than expected. You know a flight isn’t too bad when our major complaint was the uniformly dirty windows. Air France has a similar short-haul product called Hop .

Above the clouds

One more warning for the over-50 traveler: The planes we flew used steps rather than jetways for disembarking which can be tricky to maneuver with a carryon bag.

*Additional information about KLM Cityhopper .

This is one of a series of posts about my experiences on new-to-me airlines. Surely, each flight is different but it’s always helpful to get general impressions of what to expect before you fly. If you fly KLM Cityhopper and have a very different experience, please feel free to comment below.

Very interesting. And a real change to read about airline food that’s edible! Now that we’ll be residing in Portugal we can’t wait to try some of the budget airlines like KLM Cityhopper to explore Europe at our leisure. Thanks for the info!

You will have a terrific launch pad for visiting other cities and countries! Short hops are great~

This was really interesting because I may be flying more within Europe (especially to/from France) and I’ve always wondered what some of the budget airllines were like. The food didn’t look bad and I was surprised you even got food as it is a budget airline.

The big surprise was being so well fed for such a short trip!

Food on a short- haul flight and organic and local? KLM Cityhopper got my attention. $11 for leg-room is a pretty good deal.

The cost of extra leg room has gone wild! Yes, this was quite reasonable~

I love those little sandwiches in the boxes. I had them years ago and haven’t forgotten them. I just admire the care that goes into it all. The domestic airlines here in the US just never have cared that much about customer service. I love the deal on the extra leg room. After just flying Spirit I was a little envious. 😉

The food service was matched by the attentiveness of the cabin crew.

I like budget airlines for quick short flights and have only the expectations that they leave on time and arrive on time. Anything else is a bonus.

Safety, of course, and on-time arrival trump other amenities but they really do make a flight more pleasant and comfortable!

This sounds like flying in days of yore when it was actually enjoyable! How do the prices compare with the budget airlines?

Since this was a connecting flight while we were enroute from New York to Bordeaux, I actually don’t know what the cost of the separate segment would have been, Betsy.

Looks like more leg room than on a larger plane which we’ve flown between cities in Europe – great info.

The legroom made for a very comfortable flight.

The KLM CityHopper sounds like quite a comfortable ride. I wasn’t to thrilled with my KLM long haul flight from Toronto recently – I got one of those seats with a video console in the seat ahead so there was no room at all for my legs. But it was on time so that was appreciated. In comparison my Air Canada Rouge flight which is supposed to be a budget/leisure product was surprisingly roomy.

So many times, the experience just depends on the particular plane you are flying (as well as the crew) as opposed to the carrier.

This actually sounds pretty great compared to many other flights. And it’s amazing to get food like that on a short flight when you don’t even get peanuts on most cross-country flights in the US!

Yes, just flew to San Francisco on United and had nada!

If we are offered a KLM Cityhopper flight as part of flights from South Africa to Dublin in Ireland, will the luggage capacity also be 23kg on the Ciityhoppler?

Your best bet would be to call the airline directly and ask. Best, Irene

Amsterdam Travel Guide

Amsterdam: Public transport tickets & Passes Overview, current prices (2024)

Whether you are looking for a single ticket, a day pass or an Amsterdam Travel Card, here you will find all the information you need. In this guide we present the most important tickets for visitors. So you can easily find the right ticket for your stay in Amsterdam.

Important information about buying tickets:

  • You cannot buy tickets on buses and trams from the driver.
  • Many of the tickets are available online and can be purchased before your trip. You will find more information below.
  • Almost all public transport in Amsterdam is organized under the tariff system of the municipal transport company GVB “Gemeente Vervoer Bedrijf”. This makes it much easier for passengers, as a day ticket is valid on the metro, trams and GVB buses.

#1 Single rides with the OV chip card / “e-purse” or OVpay

If you are staying in amsterdam for a longer period of time but do not want to use public transport very often.

hopper travel amsterdam

A charger for the OV-chip card – credit card fees may apply (image: travelguide.amsterdam)

The OV card / e-purse system is not that simple, especially if you don’t visit the Netherlands often.

How does the OV card / e-purse work?

The OV card works like a prepaid cellphone card. You can load the card with a certain amount of money at a machine and then use it up.

For a single ride, you will pay a fixed base price plus a set amount per kilometer driven. Thus, you are paying for the distance traveled. The distance is measured exactly every 50 metres and charged accordingly. There is no such thing as a classic one-way ticket , which costs a certain amount regardless of the distance travelled (flat rate). The OV chip card / e-purse can be used in trams, buses, as well as the Metro.

  • Every passenger over the age of 4 must have a chip card.
  • The card must be topped up with at least €4 before each journey to ensure that there are sufficient funds to cover the fare.

E-purse – prices

A rechargeable and anonymous chip card, without personalisation with a passport-type photo, costs €7.50 (without adding credit). There is a €2.50 service charge for withdrawing any remaining balance.

Standard fare: base price: €1.08 per trip plus 19.6 cents per kilometer traveled

Children (4–11 years) get a discounted fare: base price: 71 cents per trip plus 12.9 cents per kilometer traveled

Another payment system was introduced in 2023: OVpay. You can pay for a single journey on local public transport directly with your credit or debit card. All you have to do is present your payment card to a scanner when boarding and alighting. The fare will be automatically debited from your account.

Paying with OVpay – important information:

  • You must always check in and out with the sa me bank card. Otherwise, the billing system will not be able to determine the correct fare.
  • For single journeys, you will need a separate payment card for each passenger.
  • In addition to the fares, credit card or exchange rate fees may also apply.
  • A journey with an age discount (e.g. children’s fare) is not yet possible with OVpay.
  • Don’t forget to check out with your payment card when you get off the bus. The fare depends on the distance traveled. If you do not check out, you will be charged an incorrect, usually higher fare.
  • There is no daily limit, as there is in London. This means that you can pay significantly more per day with OVpay than with a day ticket (see below).

#2 GVB single day ticket or multi-day-ticket: Easy & affordable – ideal for visitors & tourists – optional Airport Express bus

hopper travel amsterdam

Cheap & easy: the single-day-ticket with a validity of 1 – 7 days. Buy online and save time and stress in Amsterdam.

GVB single and multi-day tickets are popular with visitors to Amsterdam. They are easy to use and affordable.

What does this ticket offer?

  • This ticket gives you unlimited travel on all GVB trams, city buses and the metro (day and night) throughout Amsterdam and you don’t have to keep an eye on your balance like you do with the e-purse.
  • It is flexible in terms of time. Tickets are available for a single day and for up to 7 days , from 24 to 168 hours. The clock starts ticking at the time of first use.
  • There is a day ticket, especially for children aged 4 to 11. The kids’ ticket is only valid for a single day. You can purchase more than one child’s day ticket if required.
  • You can buy the ticket online before your trip (no surcharge – click here) .
  • This ticket is not valid for other regional bus companies, such as Connexxion or EBS, or in trains of the Dutch railway company NS

GVB Day Ticket + Airport Transfer Schiphol Airport ↔ City Centre

hopper travel amsterdam

→ You can find more information about the Amsterdam Travel Ticket here

→ More information about the various options for airport transfers, including travel times and prices

Current prices for GVB day and multiple-day tickets

Prices are at the lower end for a European city. The longer the validity, the lower the price per day.

Fares (2024) :

Children’s ticket (4–11 years) for 1 day / 24h: €4.50 – multiple tickets can be purchased for longer stays.

Standard fare:

1 day / 24h: €9 2 days / 48h: €15 3 days / 72h: €21 4 days / 96h: €26.50 5 days / 120h: €33 6 days / 144h: €37.50 7 days / 168h: €41 (€5.85 per day)

Our tip: buy online to save time and stress You can buy your ticket online before your trip via the English-language website of the authorised GVB ticket seller without having to pay a surcharge (click here) . This will save you stress later, as you won’t have to deal with the fare system and ticket machines after your flight. If you are travelling via Schiphol Airport, you can also buy the Amsterdam Travel Ticket online (day ticket for local transport + airport transfer by express bus or train).

GVB Ticket Child

hopper travel amsterdam

Children aged 0-3 travel free on Amsterdam’s public transport. For children between 4 and 11 years of age, the GVB children’s day ticket is available at a reduced price.

Children aged 0–3 years can use public transport in Amsterdam free of charge. There is a reduced day ticket for children between the ages of 4 and 11. It currently (2024) costs €4.50. There is no multi-day pass for children.

If you need a children’s ticket for several days, the easiest way is to buy several one-day children’s tickets. You can buy GVB children’s day tickets online together with adult tickets.

Where is the GVB day ticket valid?

The GVB day ticket is valid on the entire GVB tram, underground and bus network.

→ Map / city map Amsterdam: GVB day ticket coverage

If your destination or accommodation is outside the validity area, you might be interested in the Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket (see below). This ticket is valid for the entire region around Amsterdam.

# 3 Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket: Trips around Amsterdam + airport transfer included

Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket

Dr P. C. Sunil

I was a tourist in Amsterdam and lived in the DAM square area from 28th September 2019 to 1st October 2019. I request you to please issue a 12 hour ticket for 4.0 Euro. The 24 hour ticket which I bought for 8 Euro becomes a bit redundant since trams are not there in the late hours up to early morning. We usually party till about 2 am and then the walk back from Bull Dog Palace at Leidseplein Square to Dam Square becomes arduous and dangerous since we are not in our senses. I used line 2, 14, 24 and 26 extensively during our stay there.

Liebes Amsterdam Travel Guide Team,

erstmal Kompliment!

Person killed in KLM airplane engine at Amsterdam airport just before departure

hopper travel amsterdam

A person died at an Amsterdam airport after "ending up" in the engine of a departing airplane.

The victim was killed in the spinning turbine blades of a KLM passenger plane at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport , Dutch flagship carrier KLM said in a statement on Wednesday. The flight, KL1341, was headed to Billund, Denmark.

"Sadly, this person has died," KLM said. The air carrier has not disclosed the identity of the victim or whether they were a passenger. USA TODAY has reached out for further information.

The airline evacuated the passengers and employees who witnessed the death, KLM added. The Royal Military Police are conducting an investigation into the cause.

Plane was a short-haul Embraer jet

The aircraft involved was a short-haul Embraer jet used for KLM's Cityhopper service, taking passengers to nearby major cities, according to Dutch public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS).

The aircraft was made by Brazilian manufacturer Embraer and can accommodate 88 to 132 passengers, NOS reported. A photo shared by NOS shows the plane surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances near a departure terminal.

The death occurred Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, where Nicki Minaj was reportedly arrested on Saturday after an exchange with an officer before being released later.

Other passenger jet engine deaths have occurred in recent years, including in January when a 30-year-old man climbed into a plane engine at Salt Lake City International Airport .

Last June, a San Antonio International Airport employee died after being "ingested" into an engine. And in December 2022 an airline worker died after being " sucked into the engine " of a plane at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama.
