Useful information about your cycle tour in Denmark

The climate in denmark.

Its special location between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea gives Denmark a mild climate, regulated by the two seas. The flat land in turn ensures that it rains relatively little compared to Central Europe - the amount is about ten percent less than the German average. For cycling, this is of course just as pleasant as the moderate temperatures, which vary between about 2 degrees daytime in winter and 20 degrees in midsummer.

The Danish cuisine

Since Denmark is a peninsula and has many harbour towns, fishing has developed into a significant economic factor. However, the fish are also found on the domestic menu. A typical fish dish of the Danes is torsk, in English cod, with boiled potatoes and mustard sauce. But the absolute classic is the so-called smørrebrød, the impressive open sandwiches. Whether with butter, herring and egg yolk or salmon and dill, there are no limits to creativity when it comes to toppings. Bon appétit!

Did you know...

  • that the Danes are known as the happiest people?
  • that Denmark has two national anthems?
  • that Google Maps was invented by two Danes?
  • that Denmark has the oldest amusement park in the world?
  • that there is no word for please in the Danish language?
  • that the Danish coast is longer than the Great Wall of China?
  • that in Denmark you don't slide into the New Year, but jump?

De leukste fietsroutes, fietsvakantie bestemming Denemarken

Denmark’s seven greatest cycling routes

With the seemingly endless national, regional and local cycle routes in Denmark, how do you know where to start? We’ve got you. Here are Denmark’s seven beloved national long-distance routes, all of which make for a great self-guided cycling tour of Denmark.

From cycling up to the furthest reaches of the country in Skagen all along the backbone of Jutland, to crossing the border in a city-to-city route from Berlin to Copenhagen and gentle island-hopping tours exploring Fyn, there are plenty of bike routes to choose from. Cycling around, across and in Denmark is a pastime enjoyed by many Danes, and now you can join their ranks too!

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route (820 km)

A stop by the beach cabins on Ærø while cycling the Baltic Sea Cycling Route in Denmark

This cycle route in the shape of a figure eight runs through some of the most beautiful areas of coastal Denmark, including the fjords west of the Small Belt bridge, the archipelago around South Fyn and the cliffs on the island of Møn. Island-hopping is the aim of the game in the southern section, where you will cycle over bridges or take your bike on cycle-friendly ferries to explore quiet islands and peaceful beaches, whilst continuing the loop round to the south of Jutland.

West Coast Cycle Route (560 km)

Drone photo of Grenen in Skagen, North Jutland

From the German border in the south to the northern tip of Skagen, this route takes you on Denmark’s Route 1 through some of its best countryside, past beautiful fishing villages and unique natural areas. Along the route, you’ll cycle by the Wadden Sea, a special natural environment, home to seals and some of the country’s best oysters. Pus, the Tipperne bird sanctuary and plenty of towering sand dunes. At the top you’ll reach Grenen, Jutland’s most northerly point, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas come together.

The Limfjord Route (600 km)

Person standing at the Limfjord on a cliff, Denmark

Limfjord is Denmark’s largest fjord area, some 180 km of islands, bays and narrow ports where small ferries and multiple bridges connect the land. The area was used by the Vikings over a thousand years ago, and this route takes you around the fjord on flat stretches and wooded ridges, with gentle landscapes on the east coast through to rougher seas on the North Sea coast.

The Berlin-Copenhagen Route (630 km)

Girl biking in the neighbourhood of Christianshavn in Copenhagen

This international bike path connects these two energetic cities with plenty of unspoilt nature, swimming opportunities and more in-between. Part of the Eurovelo 7 cycle route, it is split into three stages and typically takes at least 12 days to complete, including a ferry ride between Rostock and Gedser.

The Ancient Road (450 km)

The Ancient Road, Hærvejen, in Denmark

This historic hiking and cycling route leads from Padborg in South Jutland over moraine hills to Frederikshavn in the north of Jutland, with everything including cultural monuments, historical sights and amusement parks in-between. Once a route for pilgrims, drovers, merchants and craftsmen, today it gives you an opportunity to travel the backbone of Jutland from north to south and enjoy its varied nature and landscape.

The Fjord Path (275 km)

Cows and kayaks in Roskilde Fjord

Starting in Roskilde, some 40km from Copenhagen (and an easy-ish ride from there), this route takes you around Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord on the north and west parts of Zealand. Without too many hills, it clings to the fjord coastline with sea views and car-free roads most of the way.

The Border Route (130 km)

Se Sydjylland från cykelsadeln.

This route traces the area where Northern Germany and Southern Jutland join (an area that celebrated a historic reunification in 2020). It runs from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and takes a zigzag route across the border from Vidå lock near Højer to the top of the port of Flensburg.

Any questions from the audience?

Experience has taught us that you might be wondering one of the following things right about now...

When is the best time to cycle around Denmark?

If you ask a Dane, there's no bad time to cycle around Denmark. But you might not agree with us...

The peak season for travel in Denmark is June-end August, when temperatures hit around 22◦C and there can be as many as 19 hours of daylight. Shoulder season (late spring and early autumn) is recommended for cyclists looking for quiet roads but reasonable temperatures. Winter (November-February) can be as cold as -1◦C and feels colder with wind chill.

Can I rent a bike on location?

The short answer is: YES! You don't have to bring your own bike if you'd rather not.

In Copenhagen, touring bikes can be rented from Baisikeli and Copenhagen Bicycles for longer trips outside the city. You can take bikes on trains and metros to reach your start point, or hire a bike in the destination on arrival.

Is it possible to go on a cycling tour?

Yes, there are multiple tour operators offering cycling holidays and tours in Denmark, including MTB Tours who offer mountain bike, multi-country trips and day trips. Cycle groups Rapha and Pas Normal Studios run group day trips that start and end in Copenhagen.

Do you have bike-friendly accommodation?

Yes we do! As bike enthusiasts ourselves, we totally get why you don't want to leave your darling bike outside in the cold.

The Bed + Bike scheme is a range of certified bike-friendly accommodation worth looking out. There are also basic shelters available for those who travel by kayak, bike or on foot from 30 kr per night, bookable via the Book en Shelter , Ud I Naturen and Naturstyrelsen websites.

How can I plan and navigate my way around Denmark?

The Naviki website offers excellent route planning information and downloadable routes and suggestions for smartphones and GPS devices, and is an essential for anyone wanting to explore Denmark by bike.

What's your next stop going to be?

We have a few suggestions that might be relevant for you to read. (But not while you cycle of course.)

Cycling in Denmark

Relaxed cycling holidays in one of the world’s most bike-friendly countries

Cycling in Denmark

Self-guided cycling holidays in Denmark

Denmark’s long-established cycling culture, as well as its mild climate and flat landscape, make the country an ideal destination for a cycling holiday. There is a wide and extensive network of over 11,000 kilometres of cycle routes throughout Denmark. These well-marked routes follow dedicated cycle paths, scenic coastal roads, quiet country lanes and undisturbed forest tracks. Cycle routes are particularly safe compared to other countries. Because Denmark is a relatively flat country, cycle routes are rarely physically demanding, making this a great place for a family cycling break.

We have selected cycle routes that combine relaxed cycling with historic sites, sandy beaches and charming villages of colourful thatched cottages. Explore Viking and industrial heritage on a cycling holiday in the scenic East Jutland region . If you don’t bring your own, you can rent a bicycle from us.

Set off on a self-guided cycling adventure, crafted for a personalized and flexible experience on two wheels. Discover wonders at your leisure, with the liberty to modify your route or itinerary as you wish. Our committed team meticulously takes care of all aspects, including accommodation arrangements, comprehensive planning, GPS navigation assistance, and ongoing support, to ensure a peaceful and captivating trip. This journey celebrates independence, personal discovery, and authentic cultural encounters.

Our tours are divided into three levels of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , defined by the typical daily itinerary, though there can be variations in challenge during the trip.

Leisurely tours are perfect for those looking for a relaxed journey amidst beautiful landscapes, without the need for long-distance cycling or navigating difficult terrains. Typically, these tours cover 30-50 km per day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows for numerous opportunities to enjoy the scenery, sample local cuisine, and visit quaint villages and towns along the route.

Moderate bike tours cater to those who desire a combination of picturesque routes and a bit of a challenge. Covering 50-80 km per day with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours take you through beautiful landscapes and charming villages, featuring both flat and hilly terrains. They provide plenty of chances for exploration and also offer a rewarding cycling experience.

Challenging bike tours are designed for seasoned cyclists looking to challenge themselves. These tours cover 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m and involve steep climbs and challenging routes. Suitable for those with a high level of fitness and stamina, they offer a sense of achievement and stunning views, making the effort worthwhile.

We are dedicated to finding the ideal match for your cycling journey. We work closely with a range of accommodation providers, all of whom adhere to our quality criteria, though their availability might change, particularly during high-demand seasons. Moreover, we offer the flexibility to customize your trip according to your personal tastes and budget, guaranteeing that we find the accommodation that best suits your needs.

We recommend booking your tour as soon as possible, particularly for sought-after tourist destinations where accommodation options are limited. Top choices tend to be reserved quickly, often getting fully booked for the summer season well before the arrival of spring.

In Denmark, the ideal cycling season runs from mid-April to mid-October. However, for elevated regions like the mountains, it’s advisable to schedule your cycling expeditions from mid-May to September.

In Denmark, cycling tours can be enjoyed in light rain, given you have the right clothing. During the summer months, afternoon thunderstorms are common, so it’s recommended to start your tours early in the day. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we will make every effort to adjust the tour schedule accordingly.

Bicycle Copenhagen

The Best Bike Tours in Copenhagen, Denmark

Many cities need help to build solid cycling infrastructures, but Copenhagen cracked the code a long time ago. Every year, the Danish capital vies with Amsterdam for the world’s most bike-friendly city. Copenhageners make 49% of trips to work or school on their bikes , and you’ll be taken aback by how many two-wheeled wonders are about in the city center.

Admittedly, navigating the Danish capital’s bike networks can feel daunting if you’re new to the city. But don’t worry; as long as you stick to the rules, cycling in Copenhagen is incredibly safe and a joyous experience.

If you’re only in Denmark’s largest city for a few days, you can always join a tour. Here are some of the best cycling tours in Copenhagen.

bike tours denmark

Forgotten Giants e-Bike Treasure Hunt

The Forgotten Giants are some of Denmark’s best-kept secrets. Throughout the country (and further afield), you’ll find several large mythical statues. In the Copenhagen region, you’ll find four Hidden Giants – and this treasure hunt is the perfect option to find them.

During the tour, you’ll get to ride an e-bike – which is much kinder on your legs than on an ordinary bicycle. You’ll receive a bottle of water, along with safety equipment. The tour takes place in English, Danish, Russian, and Arabic.

The tour begins outside Nordvestkirken, which is in the district of Bispebjerg. Note that this church is different from the famous Grundtvigs Kirke so that you don’t get the meeting point confused.

bike tours denmark

Complete Copenhagen City Tour

Copenhagen has plenty of hidden gems just outside the city. If you travel slightly further up the island of Sjælland, for example, you’ll find acres of beaches and the likes of Frederiksborg Castle. But even if you never leave the downtown area, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do.

This tour gives you a complete picture of Copenhagen, and you’ll also see some of the lesser-visited parts of the city. For example, you’ll cycle across the architectural marvel known as Cykelslangen – a bridge designed exclusively for bicycles. You’ll also pass some of the city’s diverse architecture, such as the newly-built Kaktus Towers.

Of course, you’ll also get to see many of the main sights in the inner city. For example, you’ll get to see Amalienborg Palace – which is Denmark’s answer to Buckingham Palace.

Rent Your Own Bike

Although you’ll find plenty of bike tours in Copenhagen, arguably the best way to explore the Danish capital is by allowing yourself to wander aimlessly. The vast majority of streets have well-maintained bicycle paths, making it easy to get around (be careful in Frederiksberg, though, as some bike lanes are among the traffic).

If you want to explore Copenhagen by bike, you have several options. Many hotels in the city offer bike rentals for guests, with two examples being Scandic Kødbyen and WakeUp Borgergade .

Throughout the city, you’ll also notice several bright orange Donkey Republic bikes. You can rent these via the app and drop them off at numerous points in Copenhagen; how much you pay depends on the amount of time you ride the bike for.

Copenhagen also has numerous bicycle rental stores that let you borrow bikes for an affordable price. You can use the white Bycyklen bikes, too, but be warned – you’ll out yourself as a tourist because most locals don’t use these.

bike tours denmark

A Bicycle Adventure in Copenhagen

You might want to save the solo bike tour for after you’ve managed to get an idea of Copenhagen’s layout. So, what better way to do that than with this cycling tour of the city ?

Whereas the other bike tours we’ve mentioned go a little more off the beaten path, this is a better option if you want to see the main sights. You’ll pass by the iconic Nyhavn harbor, along with seeing Rosenborg Castle and several other tourist attractions.

The tour is operated by Scandinavian Guides, and you can meet at a souvenir shop in the city center. Note that a maximum of 15 people can book this tour.

A Private Tour With a Local

If you’re looking for something that doesn’t involve a lot of strangers, consider booking this private tour instead. You’ll meet on Åboulevard, which separates the Frederiksberg and Nørrebro districts. During the trip, you’ll see some of the locals’ favorite spots – such as Islands Brygge, which is a great place to relax when the sun’s out.

During the tour, you’ll get a better understanding of how Copenhagen works as a city. And as you wander the bike lanes on your two-wheeled companion, you’ll get to enjoy how everything works perfectly in sync.

The route will vary from tour to tour, so you can enjoy a nice surprise each time.

Tips for Taking a Bike Tour in Copenhagen

When you participate in a bicycle tour in Copenhagen, remember that you’re sharing bike lanes with the locals. While the locals are typically a friendly bunch, acting like a nuisance on your bicycle is a great way to learn Danish profanities – and we don’t recommend it.

Here are some useful tips to follow:

  • Keep to the right-hand side of the bike lane. In Copenhagen, the outer side of the bike lane is for people to overtake and ride faster. Stay close to the pavement if you’re going to take a leisurely ride through the city, and move there if someone rings their bell.
  • Keep a single file on busy streets. Most bike lanes in Copenhagen can fit two normal-sized bikes. Try to cycle in a single line, though, as it can be annoying if two people are biking next to each other.
  • Use hand signals. Use your left hand if you’re turning left and right for the other direction. If you’re stopping to get off your bike or to change direction, put your hand up; you don’t need to do this when stopping at a red light.

Plenty of Ways to Enjoy the World’s Most Bicycle-Friendly City

You’ll find plenty of bicycle tours in Copenhagen, and the city is perfect for getting around on two wheels. A well-developed infrastructure makes getting around a breeze, and many of the Danish capital’s best sights are close to one another.

When visiting Copenhagen, you can check out the main sights and find other tours that show you the less-trodden paths. And, of course, you can always rent your own bike and explore for yourself.

Resurgent Pogacar set for Tour de France duel with road-rusty Vingegaard

T he Tour de France sets off from the Italian city of Florence on Saturday with Tadej Pogacar well prepped for a battle royale with defending champion Jonas Vingegaard on a route designed to take the world's greatest bike race down to the wire.

Team UAE's rider Pogacar goes into the 21-day race in red-hot form after winning the Giro d'Italia in May.

Visma's Vingegaard, the two-time defending champion from Denmark, hasn't raced since suffering multiple fractures in a fall in March.

Vingegaard's fall offers Slovenia's Pogacar a chance at revenge for the brutal manner in which the Dane crushed him on two Alpine stages late in the 2023 edition.

"I've tested my legs a little and to be honest, I've never felt so good on a bike," said Pogacar, a back-to-back winner in 2020 and 2021.

"Everyone thinks that I'm going to win the Tour every year, but I didn't win the last two times."

While Pogacar dislikes heat and high altitude, Vingegaard is the man on the back foot this year due to the punctured lung and broken ribs he sustained in that March accident.

"Jonas was really badly injured, but I think he'll be okay. If he is feeling mentally strong and has made a good recovery he will be at his top level," Pogacar said.

Behind these chalk-and-cheese rivals is a bevvy of pretenders awaiting the slightest slip on a treacherous route in a year where bike accidents have hogged the headlines.

Veteran Primoz Roglic has won the Vuelta a Espana and the Giro in his career and will be riding the Tour in the colours of new sponsor Red Bull, a new contract worth six million euros a year in his back pocket.

Also in the mix is the impossible-to-ignore talent of Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick Step), who will target the two time-trials and the gravel roads on what should be an enthralling Tour debut for the 24-year-old targeting the best young rider jersey.

"We saw that Remco and Primoz were in good shape in the Dauphine and I reckon they'll be at their best. But you never know. Last year I thought I was 100 percent," Pogacar said.

The route crosses the Alps twice with seven mountain slogs, features a first-ever race on white gravel and ends with an eye-catching individual time trial from Monaco to Nice along the French Riviera.

Broadcast live in more than 100 countries, the first four days are drenched with Italian colour, starting with the Renaissance beauty of Florence before the race crosses the Rubicon river, takes in the seaside sights at Rimini, passes along the Via Romagna road into Bologna and eventually moves out of Fiat capital Turin towards France for the remaining 17 stages.

- Spectacular climax -

Instead of the traditional parade round Paris on the final day for the 21st stage, a timetable clash with the 2024 Olympic Games in the French capital sent the organisers looking elsewhere.

And what a solution they found. In place of the sprint up and down the Champs-Elysees, the stage is now an individual 34.5km time-trial along the coastline corniches between Monaco and Nice.

The last stage could well provide a last twist in fate for the riders, evoking memories of the 1989 Tour, when American Greg LeMond started a rare final-day time trial 50 seconds behind French leader Laurent Fignon and ended up winning the race by eight seconds.

With another wink at history Pogacar is aiming to become the first rider in 26 years to win the Giro and Tour de France in the same season.

He romped almost unopposed to the Giro title in May and should he pull off the ambitious feat he will join a list of legends in Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Stephen Roche, Miguel Indurain and Marco Pantani, the last man to achieve the double in 1998.

The seven mountain stages, which include four high-altitude finales, with the highest at 2,802m on stage 19, will be to the liking of Vingegaard.

Visma's Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard and UAE Team Emirates' Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar will again be the men to beat

Your all-encompassing Copenhagen bike tour

For an all-encompassing bicycle tour of Denmark’s dynamic capital, look no further than the Copenhagen Highlights Bike Tour! In just 3 hours, your guided tour takes in Copenhagen City Hall, Christiansborg Palace, Royal Library, Old Stock Exchange, Nyhavn, Royal Danish Playhouse, Copenhagen Opera House, Amalienborg Palace, Marble Church, Little Mermaid, Kastellet, King’s Garden, and the Copenhagen Lakes. With the added benefit of bike rental, you can really capitalize on your time in Copenhagen, the ‘City of Spires’.

Your day tour starts at Copenhagen City Hall, an awe-inspiring Art Nouveau masterpiece with an ornate exterior complete with a glimmering gilded statue of Absalon. The hall also houses Jens Olsen’s World Clock! Here, your guide will also tell you about the Tivoli Gardens, visible from the City Hall and the world’s third oldest working amusement park. Your bicycle tour continues in this grand theme to Christiansborg Palace, the seat of Danish Parliament. The Palace is the only building in the world to house all three branches of a country’s government - executive, legislative, and judicial. Ride on to the Royal Library, one of the largest libraries in the world, comprising the old red brick building of 1906 and the 1999 Black Diamond Building.

Onwards to the Old Stock Exchange, one of the oldest buildings in the city. Built in 1625, this phenomenal building has been known for its iconic tower designed to look like four intertwined dragon tails. The copper roof you see today is comparatively recent - the original lead chosen by King Christian IV was removed to make cannonballs during the Swedish Occupation in 1658-9! Sadly, the entire building, including the spectacular tower, were engulfed in flames in April 2024 - a devastating accident for the people of Copenhagen.

Next on your bike tour is Nyhavn, the iconic rows of colorful buildings that line the canal. These charming buildings are predominantly townhouses and bars from the 17th and early 18th Centuries, and represent a quintessential Copenhagen backdrop.

Ride on to the Royal Danish Playhouse, which throws a resplendent reflection in the Frederiksstaden harborfront. Nearby, on the island of Holmen, you’ll find the Copenhagen Opera House, one of the most expensive venues of its kind ever built, at 2.5 billion DKK. Some of the materials used in this lavish building include Jura Gelb limestone, Sicilian Perlatino marble, maple wood, and gold leaf amounting to the equivalent of 1.5 kilos of gold!

Arriving at Amalienborg Palace, admire the official residence of the Danish Royal Family, comprising four palace facades in an octagonal courtyard wherein stands an enormous equestrian statue of King Frederick V, founder of Amalienborg. Your day tour moves on to the Marble Church, also known as Frederik’s Church. Likely inspired by the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, this resplendent rococo building is truly beautiful to behold. You’ll pedal next to the Langelinie promenade and park up your bicycle next to the iconic Little Mermaid, a brilliant bronze statue perched on a rock designed by Edvard Eriksen and depicting a mermaid becoming human.

Your guided bike tour continues to Kastellet, one of the best-preserved fortresses in Northern Europe, comprising a pentagon-shaped citadel with bastions at each corner. You'll then cycle around the King’s Garden, one of the oldest parks in Copenhagen. Your bike tour carries on to the Copenhagen Lakes, where you’ll be rewarded with an atmospheric oasis of tranquil rectangular lakes curving around the city’s western margin.

Ok experience

· copenhagen highlights bike tour.

There were 16 people on the tour which was too large a group. The entire group could not get through the lights together resulting in some crossing against the light even after being told the leader would wait. A little hard to hear the leader, but what she said was interesting.
