Find a mobile barber that will come to you : you deserve it .

A mobile barber is someone who works outside the confines of a barbershop and travels to the customer rather than having the customer travel to the barbershop.

Now the barber becomes mobile : at-home haircuts and hairstyle are not reserved to celebrities any more. Have your regular men's haircut, buzz cut, mustache trim or even a beard touch up (to conceal the grey) in the comfort of your home. Let the mobile barbershop come to you !

Traveling Barber With Scissors

What is a Barber and a Master Barber (vs a Hair Stylist) ?

Barbers cut and style the hair of their predominantly male client base. They are required to be licensed since the profession deals directly with public health. Master barber training includes all the traditional elements of barber training, including hair cutting, hair coloring, facial hair services, the use of styling tools, hygiene protocols and client relations, but also requires further specialized training in these areas.

The requirements for getting a barber license vary depending on the state, but generally include:

  • Completing a certain number of training hours: Most states require that you complete a certain number of training hours in order to be eligible for a license. The number of hours required can vary from state to state, but typically ranges from 1000 to 2000 hours.
  • Apprenticeship: Some states require a certain number of hours of apprenticeship under the supervision of a licensed barber. This can be a good way to gain hands-on experience and learn from a more experienced professional.
  • Passing a state board exam: Most states require that you pass a state board exam in order to be licensed. The exam typically covers topics such as hair cutting, styling, shaving, and sanitation.
  • Continuing education: Most states require that barbers complete a certain number of continuing education hours in order to renew their license.
  • Meeting other requirements: Depending on the state, there may be other requirements such as a background check, fingerprinting and submitting proof of age, etc.

It's important to check with your state's barbering board for specific requirements, as they can vary from state to state. It's also worth noting that some states have different level of licenses for different type of services, like hair cutting, shaving, etc"Ã"šÃ‚¦ And see if the program you are considering is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) or other relevant organizations.

The term "master barber" does not typically refer to a specific diploma or degree, but rather to a level of skill and experience that a barber has achieved. In some states, becoming a "master barber" might require passing a state board exam and meeting other requirements, but in many states, it is a title given to the most experienced and skilled barber working in the shop or for the individual. It's important to note that some states may have different titles for different levels of barbers, like journeyman barber and master barber, so it's best to check with your state's barbering board for specifics.

The master barber license is a valuable asset, as it generally recognizes more experienced barbers as having the ability to provide a higher level of service which, in turn, gives them the ability to command higher prices for their services.

And what are the differences with a hair stylist ?

The main difference between a barber and a hair stylist is the type of services they provide and the training they receive.

Barbers are trained to cut and style men's hair, as well as to shave and trim beards. They typically receive training in cutting and styling short, traditional men's hairstyles, as well as in using clippers, scissors, and razors. Barbers may also provide basic hair coloring and grooming services, such as beard and mustache trimming.

Hair stylists, on the other hand, are trained to cut, style, and color hair for both men and women. They typically receive training in a wider range of cutting and styling techniques, including both long and short hairstyles, and in using a variety of tools and products. Hair stylists may also provide more advanced hair coloring and chemical treatments, such as highlights, lowlights, and perms.

In addition, hair stylists usually have a broader range of services they are authorized to perform, such as nails and makeup services, skin care, and so on.

It's worth noting that in some states, the terms "barber" and "hair stylist" may be used interchangeably, and the services provided by each may overlap. So if you are wondering, just check with your state's barbering or cosmetology board for details.

What is a mobile barber ?

A mobile barber is a barber who comes to a client's location to provide hair cutting and grooming services, instead of the client going to a traditional barbershop or salon. This can include things like cutting hair in a client's home, or providing services in a mobile barbershop. Also called sometimes, traveling barbers , they can provide a convenient option for those who have difficulty leaving their home, have mobility issues, or prefer the convenience of having the service come to them.

There are two types of mobile barbers :

  • the most common, and usually least expensive, is the stylist who carries their equipment with them and provides services such as haircuts, hair coloring and hair styling inside the customer's home or place of business. (Other salon services such as massage, waxing and mani/pedis may be available as well.)
  • the other type of mobile stylist is one who uses a vehicle such as a trailer or a camper as their salon, and customers come inside to receive their services.

Find a mobile barber near you

You should find a mobile hairstylist near you anytime, because mobile hairstyling is a convenient option for many.

Some people have an extremely busy schedule and have difficulty finding the time to go to a salon or barbershop. It's simply easier for the stylist to come to them. Additionally, many people with health problems, disabilities and those recovering from illnesses or accidents may find it easier to have their stylist or barber come to them. Apart from that, nothing beats receiving services in a space that's comfortable and familiar. And what's more comfortable and familiar than one's own home ?

Another benefit of mobile hairstylists or barbers is their cost, which is typically less than the cost for traditional stylists, as they don't have to pay overhead for a large salon or for other staff members.

Mobile Barbershop

Select the right mobile barber for you or your loved ones

With very little humility, we might say "Thanks to DashStylists" ;-), but let's elaborate.

Once you've decided that a mobile hairstylist is the best option for you, your next step is finding one. Though they can be found anywhere, most are found in or near larger cities. If you live in a rural area, finding one can be a bit trickier.

Here are a few tips for finding the right barber for you:

  • Ask for recommendations: Ask friends, family, or coworkers if they know of a good barber. Personal recommendations can be very helpful in finding someone who will do a good job.
  • Research online: Look for barbershops in your area and read reviews of their services. Websites like Yelp and Google Reviews can provide valuable information about the quality of service, the atmosphere, and the prices.
  • Look for experience: A barber with more experience may be more likely to provide a high-quality service. You can ask how long the barber has been working or look for a barber who is a master barber, who have passed the state board exam.
  • Check out the shop: Before you make an appointment, it's a good idea to check out the barbershop. Look for a clean and well-maintained shop, with professional-looking barbers and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Communicate with the barber: During your first visit, explain exactly what you want, bring pictures if you have, so the barber can understand your preference. If you are not satisfied with the cut, let the barber know, so they can make adjustments for your next visit.

Remember that finding the right barber may take some time and may require trying out a few different options. But by following these tips, you should be able to find a barber who can provide you with the high-quality service you are looking for.

And mobile barber services are particularly a good fit for older adults aging at home .

Other frequent asked questions about mobile barbers :

1. how much costs a haircut in a barbershop .

A great haircut goes a long way in boosting your confidence. Whether it's in a high-end barbershop or an ordinary joint, many people want to have a good cut. Even if you aim at have a long healthy hair, it will require more than just waiting for it to grow. Regular trimming helps eliminate splitting ends and breakage thus allowing the your hair to grow healthily. The cost range is diverse with most barbershops ranging from $20-50. However, some salon in Midtown Manhattan, New York in known to charge between $80 to $200 for a regular man's shave. Obviously, this leaves you with a question on what makes the price variation? Whereas looking good is the ultimate goal, the process of attaining that is the real deal. Even if you'll definitely need barbering, a professional hairstylist ought to offer the best solution based on your head shape, complexion, type of hair among other factors. The stylist will determine if your hair needs a fade or the clippers should cut more. The price range thus comes about due to the locality, additional services not to mention the clientele. You do not expect a celebrity to have a haircut at an ordinary local salon. Class and status come with a cost. Similarly, if the stylist is mobile and bring the services to you, there will be an added cost to the convenience as well as the facilitation fee. While there are luxury mobile barbers who charge up to $200, ordinarily, a gentleman's shave only can go for $50 without extra services such as hot towel, shampooing etc. Repeat clients attract a discount. Seniors and children have different rates. Other than luxury and status, the hair type is the single determining factor on the price of a haircut.

Historically traditional, these past 20 years the barber industry has involved supported by new technologies, but the COVID pandemic has definitely rocked the industry and innovations are pouring in the barbershops .

In addition to that, mobile hair services charges are influenced by the equipment of the stylist. Some stylist have mobile van that practically brings the barbershop to you while others carry with them a few tools and devices to shave your hair.

2. How much to tip your barber ?

Tipping beauty professionals is always a subject of questions you've probably asked yourself as your appointment draws to a close, especially with a new beauty professional. We propose here a few pieces of advice to decide how to tip your hairdresser or barber.

Customarily, like any other beauty service provider, you should tip your barber, unless the service is a complete failure or the attitude of the barber was unbearable. Not tipping a barber mobile or not is a significant move.

The average tip for a barber is typically 15-20% of the cost of the service. However, it's worth noting that this can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the service and the location of the salon. Some people may choose to tip more or less based on their personal preferences and budget.

3. How much makes a barber ?

The salary of a barber can vary depending on factors such as location, experience, and demand for their services. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for barbers was $32,480 in May 2020. The lowest 10% earned less than $22,880, and the highest 10% earned more than $49,720.

Mobile styling is usually more profitable since you dont have to pay for a booth or a seat or for a % fee to the salon. Even if you have to pay a commission to a marketplace, like DashStylists.com, it will cost you around 10%-20% compared to 40% to 60% on average in a beauty salon. And the expenses you have to face as a mobile hairdresser, mostly gas and car use, are very low so definitely you should see more money at the end of the day.

Financially speaking, another perk of going mobile is you dont' have to go full mobile, you can work in a salon for 5-6 hours a day, when the salon is really busy and work for yourself as a mobile hairstylist taking one or two short appointments to cut hair after your work in the salon.

And it is probably better to think of mobile styling as an additional source of revenue as for now, because the US market is not developed enough yet.

But we are working on it !

Not Ready to Hit the Barbershop Yet? Guys Are Trying Professional In-Home Haircuts.

Here’s what you need to know before the barber knocks at your door.

shortcut barber giving an in home haircut while wearing a mask during the coronavirus epidemic

Getting a haircut in your own home isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon, but this kind of service was mostly reserved for the very rich or the very famous. Thanks to apps like Klippers and Shortcut , which help pair clients with barbers who can come to their home, getting a haircut without setting foot in a barbershop is something anyone can do. And in the times of COVID-19, more men might be turning to that option. “In the last month, we’ve added over 1,100 new clients and have been up 600% in orders,” says Shortcut co-founder Will Newton, which translates to about 3,000 appointments in the 25 cities Shortcut barbers currently service. “Prior to COVID-19, you might have thought of an in-home haircut as a luxury, but in the future, it may become the new normal,” says barber and Shortcut Head of Education Pedro Rosario .

Why Get Your Haircut At Home?

On the surface, getting your haircut at home is all about convenience. Like Postmates or Netflix, it’s about getting something exactly when you want it without needing to put on real pants. “If you’re going to be home, your barber can just come whenever,” says Ben Chait, whose barber has come to cut his hair at home several times. “You don’t have to deal with the theatrics of going somewhere. It feels like a luxury.”

But as a pandemic still rages outside our doors, there are very real concerns beyond securing an appointment and getting yourself to the shop. “Even though barber shops have social distancing regulations, [some people] still don’t feel safe going in them with so many people around,” says Newton. “They feel safer being able to control the space they’re in.” Going to a barber shop could seem like a crap shoot; contract tracing is difficult in even the most well-regulated public areas and how many other people are following mask and social distance guidelines is often out of your control.

It’s especially concerning to certain people who are immunocompromised or at high risk of contracting the virus, who Newton notes make up a good chunk of Shortcut’s new clients. “I’ve been trying to avoid any kind of interactions that aren’t absolutely necessary; I don’t even go in stores,” says Jason Noble, who chose to use Shortcut because his inherited autoimmune disorder puts him at increased risk of contracting COVID-19. “I just don’t want to expose myself to any unneeded risk.”

Is It Safer To Have a Barber Cut Your Hair in Your Home?

“It depends,” says William C. Miller, MD, MPH, PhD, senior associate dean of research and professor at The Ohio State University College of Public Health. “The advantage of having a barber come to your house is that you limit your exposure to that one person, so in theory, it would be safer.”

But ultimately, Dr. Miller is quick to note, it comes down to the behavior of the barber and their other clients. “It’s important to realize that this person will have been exposed to all the other people they have taken care of, so having the barber come to your home has some risk,” he says. Just like at a barbershop, even if safety precautions are being enforced, you have no way of knowing who your barber has been exposed to before he cuts your hair. “Finally, it’s important to consider what’s going on locally,” continues Dr. Miller. “If there haven’t been any cases in your county for some time, it will be much safer than if your county has a rapidly increasing case count.”

Don’t Expect Relaxed Safety Measures With an In-Home Haircut

In fact, expect stricter ones. In the instance of Shortcut, which has barbers across multiple states, the company has developed a strict protocol that uses the national Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a template, not the individual states’ guidelines. That means that depending on what state you’re in, the safety measures your at-home barber takes could be more than what you may encounter in a barber shop.

Shortcut developed it’s protocol by giving in-hospital haircuts to frontline workers during the height of the pandemic, so “all the pros have to go through extensive training about what it means to be safe,” says Newton. Shortcut’s training includes daily temperature checks for barbers, making sure they have and use the appropriate PPE, and training them in proper sanitation techniques. And safety doesn’t just fall on the barbers. Shortcut requires clients to answer COVID-related questions (like whether they have symptoms) and sign a waiver.

Working with an individual barber, or another on-demand service, may have different protocols, but the top priority of an in-home haircut should always be safety. Getting your haircut at home is not a way to get around safety precautions—it’s a way to have more control over whether they’re enforced. Follow these steps before and during your at-home cut to make sure you have the best, and safest, experience possible.

7 Tips for Getting a Safe In-Home Haircut By a Barber

1. read reviews before booking your barber.

When choosing a barber, either on an app like Shortcut or not, always check reviews or ask for recommendations. And we’re not just talking about before and after pictures of fresh cuts either. Look for specific references to the safety measures the barber took and whether clients were satisfied with them (or if you’re getting a word of mouth reference, ask about safety point blank). Newton has noticed that reviews on Shortcut have organically started to include ratings on pandemic-related precautions and it’s made the user experience better. “I chose my barber because several people listed in the reviews section that he had a very, very detailed and thorough cleaning and disinfecting process,” says Noble. “It made me feel comfortable contacting him.”

2. Have A Conversation With Your Barber Before They Arrive to Your Home

“The major concern [with an in-home haircut] is whether the barber has followed the same strict protocols in every home that they normally would in a shop,” says Dr. Miller. “Ask right up front what precautions they take, if they ever allow a client to take their mask off, and if they also work in a shop.” Whatever barber you choose, even if you know them well, do not wait to have this conversation till they arrive at your door. On Shortcut, clients are required to use the chat function to speak with the barber directly before booking. Asking questions up front not only allows you to make an informed decision, but also lets you know what to expect and how to prepare before they arrive.

3. You Still Need To Wear A Mask During Your In-Home Haircut

If you think getting your haircut at home is a way to get around the mask-wearing rule, think again. “Both the barber and the client need to be wearing masks” and keep them on for the whole haircut, says Dr. Miller. Masks are a non-negotiable; if you’re not willing to wear a mask, forget the cut. And yes, that means the barber may not be able to give you a beard trim, even in your own home. Ask about a beard trim up front and don’t be surprised if they say no. Some barbers may agree, but ultimately it’s their decision, not yours.

4. Get Your In-Home Haircut Outside (If You Can)

“Try to maximize the ventilation, even do the haircut outside if you can,” recommends Dr. Miller. It’s been shown that COVID-19 spreads more easily indoors , so if possible ask to get your haircut in your backyard or on your balcony. “I’ve had clients want to get their haircut outside, which is totally fine with me,” says Shortcut barber Pierre Johnson. “I actually enjoy it.”

5. Keep Cleaning Supplies Handy for Your Haircut

If you’re booking through an app like Shortcut, you’ll likely be advised on how to sanitize your space. If you’re not, be prepared to help with cleanup. Cleaning and sanitizing your space before the barber arrives is fine, but not necessary, says Dr. Miller, but you absolutely need to sanitize afterward. The good thing is that you have the power to clean your home exactly how you want, unlike in a barber shop. Your barber will likely disinfect his tools and sweep up before he leaves, but once he’s gone, you should wipe down surfaces and wash towels immediately.

6. Remember It’s A Two-Way Street

Just like you’re choosing to get your haircut at home to feel safer and more comfortable, the barber needs to feel comfortable, too. That means you need to follow the rules they set, because they’re trained to protect you. And if you’re not willing to follow them, they have the power to decline. An in-home haircut is not a loophole. “We have the ability to deny the appointment if a person has been exposed to the virus or if they haven’t been cleared by their doctor to receive essential services,” says Johnson. Once the barber arrives, they’ll enforce the rules they set forward as well, so don’t expect to “forget” your mask and still get your haircut.

7. Don’t Haggle (and Tip Well)

There is always a price for convenience, and typically house call haircuts cost a little bit more than the cuts you’ll get in a shop. But remember, many barbers were out of work for months and even if they’re back at work now, probably can’t see as many customers as usual. Plus, if you’re asking them to come to your home, they’re putting themselves at some risk, so be prepared to compensate them adequately (and tip them generously if you can). Spending a few extra dollars to feel safer is a tradeoff that may be worth it to you. “I would rather spend $50 and have my barber come to me than go to the shop,” says Chait. It’s a matter of what you’re willing to sacrifice for safety.

Thanks to COVID, Barbers Have Gone Mobile—and They May Stay That Way

By Phillip Picardi

A diptych of a man getting his hair cut at a barber shop vs at home.

When stay-at-home orders first hit American cities in March , barbers and salon workers panicked. Unlike many other professionals, they were not considered “essential workers,” and the very nature of their work—at close quarters indoors for prolonged periods—made it unclear when it would ever be safe to work again. Then came the deluge of articles and YouTube videos instructing people on how to dye or cut their own hair at home. For many, a little quarantine scruff became a badge of honor, ending whatever urgency was left to visit the salon. As the weeks stretched into months, many of the country’s beauty professionals contended with an uncomfortable reality: They may not be going back to work at all this year. With state unemployment systems glitchy—and negotiations now deadlocked in a Washington stalemate—for many, not working simply wasn’t an option.

That was the case for Jay (not his real name), a barber and shop owner based in Los Angeles who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity for this article. “My income has been affected tremendously,” he says. Seeing the writing on the wall, Jay wasted no time: Almost as soon as his shop was shut down, he texted his entire client book and explained his new system. He’d pull up to your house, bringing his own barber chair and tools, and offer you your typical service—with a $30 “convenience fee” added on top to cover his travel.

Initially, Jay’s pandemic client base included his core clientele—guys he’s known and trusted for years. “I worry about catching COVID, so I make sure I’m going into a place where I can feel safe,” he explains. But eventually, friends of his clients started noticing the fresh cuts and asking questions. Through a strict referral process, Jay expanded his bookings and is now seeing 21 clients per week. “I’m sustaining the same lifestyle as before,” he says. “I’m not making more than I used to, but I’m not making less either.”

Los Angeles is currently in what seems like a coronavirus free fall, with inaccurate reporting and a premature reopening plan contributing to an overall rise in cases. That means that, just weeks after salons opened their doors to clients again, the governor ordered them closed. Then, a caveat: Salons were allowed to take customers, so long as they could be outside . This new rule hasn’t changed Jay’s strategy at all, despite the fact that he’s still paying the rent on his shop. “There’s no reason for brick and mortar anymore,” he says. “I think in the next two years, you’re going to see more mobile barber services in trailers and airstreams. We can identify a location, pull up, and cut on the spot.”

According to Will Newton, the founder of the app Shortcut , Jay is very much on to something. Shortcut’s initial premise when it launched in 2016 was simple: Get guys to book at-home haircuts. Newton says he never could have anticipated that his biggest windfall would come during a global pandemic, but the app has experienced explosive growth in recent months. The environment was so promising that it prompted Newton to open up the app’s technology to license to salon owners, who can continue to manage their books (and control commissions from their stylists) by setting up at-home appointments during what would typically be regular business hours. Many stylists, Newton says, have realized that using the app gives them an autonomy they’ve never had before: They can take their clients, import them into the app, build their clientele, and manage their calendar.

Any service provider looking to sign up with Shortcut must go through the app’s “special COVID training,” which covers everything from PPE to proper sanitation. “Every day, when a stylist gets an order, they get a prompt from us—check your temperature, make sure if you’re experiencing these symptoms to not go outside,” Newton says. Both the professional and the client are “required” to wear a mask during the appointment (though it is unclear how, exactly, the app could police such behavior). However, Newton adds, data from Shortcut’s user base shows that most appointments are taking place outdoors, either on patios or backyards. Shortcut takes 20 percent of every transaction, about 10 to 20 percent lower than the average commission taken by a salon from their stylists.

At-home cuts come at a premium. In New York City, Newton says the average haircut could cost you around $42, while the average haircut on his app goes for $55. Similarly, to visit Jay at his shop for a cut, you’d be charged $40; but to get him at your house, it’s $70 (without tip). “We’re out here taking risks, trying to get paid, and trying to make sure you look good, so please take care of your barber,” Jay says. “I’ve made house calls where people start to haggle with me, and it’s like, pay me my value.”

But with the at-home haircut becoming a growing opportunity—and, perhaps, a permanent one at that—the biggest question still remains: Is it actually safe?

It’s a difficult question to answer, because it’s not even clear how dangerous a traditional salon setup is. Last month, a report published by the CDC found that “vigilant mask wearing” could have prevented nearly 140 people from contracting the coronavirus at a Missouri hair salon where two stylists tested positive for the virus. “In this case, both the workers and the customers were wearing masks, which prevent someone from spreading viral particles to others, especially in an enclosed indoors space, close together, for a long period of time,” explains Ofole Mgbako, MD, an internal medicine doctor and infectious-disease fellow who was not involved with the study.

If the study made it seem like going to get your haircut is low-risk, though, it’s not quite that simple. “Hair salons are considered low risk in communities where the pandemic is more controlled because they can control the number of people gathering in an indoor space at one time,” says Dr. Mgbako. In places where the virus is widespread, like much of the United States currently, it's much more dangerous.

The same calculation applies to an at-home cut. Essentially, the “safety” of the scenario depends on where you live: If you’re in a place where coronavirus is high or on the rise, then it’s not a good idea. But in places with low transmission, it’s more understandable—so long as you’re able to trust that the person entering your home is taking all the necessary precautions and being honest about their symptoms and overall level of potential exposure.

If you’re thinking about booking a cut, whether that’s through an app or a word-of-mouth appointment, using outdoor space for your cut is optimal. If that’s not an option, ensure as much ventilation as possible. “Recent studies have shown coronavirus may be transmitted by aerosols, meaning it hangs in the air for hours, so it’s important to have the windows open to ensure good ventilation,” Dr. Mgbako says. He also recommends asking screening questions: Are you experiencing symptoms like fever, chills, body aches, loss of smell or taste, sore throat, or shortness of breath? Have you had COVID-19? Have you been tested for the virus or antibodies? Have you been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 or symptoms in the last two weeks?

However, Dr. Mgbako encourages us to look at the rise of at-home cuts less as yet another opportunity for capitalism—and more as one of its worst failures. “The pandemic is out of control in this country due to a lack of national strategy. This past week, there was a day when one American was dying every minute from COVID-19,” he says. “In Missouri, those two salon workers kept on working despite feeling ill. While it’s important for people who feel sick to get tested and isolate themselves, people are also struggling economically. People shouldn’t have to choose between their lives and their livelihood.”

GQ grooming columnist Phillip Picardi says the long hair, mustaches, and beards of coronavirus quarantine are the start of a bold new era of men's grooming.

We tried to book through the website and had questions at which point we called then texted. We never heard back until I posted on FB and was told they are too busy to cut hair to answer phones, set up a voicemail system or return text messages (texting is apparently the best way to book appointments). I contacted Powers Barber Shop in Moscow and booked our 3 appointments within a few hours via finding them on Google. It was a much better experience and they have great reviews about working with kids.
