For over five decades, Earth, Wind & Fire has been delighting fans and critics alike with their beyond-category style – a unique fusion of afrobeat, gospel, blues, and jazz. With global record sales of over 100 million, they are one of the most successful bands of all time.

And it all started in Chicago. In 1969, Maurice White formed a songwriting group with his friends, Don Whitehead and Wade Flemons. The trio started out writing songs for commercials, then signed a recording deal with Capitol Records. As The Salty Peppers, they released their first single, “La La Time.” It was a moderate hit, but the band didn’t find much success after that. Maurice then left Chicago for Los Angeles.

In LA, Maurice changed the group’s name to Earth, Wind, & Fire based on the elemental qualities of his astrological sign, Sagittarius. He added Sherry Scott on vocals and Yackov Ben Israel on percussion. He also asked his brother, Verdine, to join the band on bass. Michael Beal was later added on guitar, along with Chester Washington on reeds, Leslie Drayton on trumpet, and Alex Thomas on trombone. The group then signed to Warner Brothers.

Earth, Wind & Fire released its debut, self-titled album in February 1971. It climbed to number 24 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart. The band’s second album, The Need of Love, came out that November and climbed to number 35 on the same chart. The single, “I Think About Lovin’ You,” became the group’s first Top 40 R&B hit. The same year, Earth, Wind & Fire also performed the soundtrack for the Melvin Van Peebles’ movie Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.

In 1972, Earth, Wind & Fire’s contract with Warner Bros was bought by Columbia Records. After losing and gaining members, the band released their first album under the new label. Last Days and Time dropped in October and peaked at number 15 on the US Billboard Top Soul Albums chart.

The band’s fourth studio album, Head to the Sky, came out in May 1973. It climbed to number two on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart and number 27 on the Billboard 200 chart. In March 1974, Earth, Wind & Fire dropped their fifth album, Open Our Eyes. It became the band’s first album to reach the number one spot on the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart.

After their first chart-topper, Earth, Wind & Fire went on to record another 17 albums. The band’s 24-album discography has spawned eight received eight double platinum certifications and eight number-one singles, including time-tested, well-loved classics like “September,” “Shining Star,” and “Boogie Wonderland.”

Earth, Wind & Fire remains one of the best-selling bands of all time, with an undeniable legacy. Many of the band’s songs have been covered by top artists in the industry, including Taylor Swift, Chicago, and Patti LaBelle. The band’s music has also been sampled by the likes of Missy Elliot, Snoop Dog, Jay-Z, and Drake.

The band’s incredible impact and achievement has earned it a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It also boasts nine Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and four American Music Awards. In 2016, founding member Maurice White passed away at the age of 74. The band continues to play in his honor.

Catch Earth, Wind & Fire live with Santana on the ongoing Miraculous Supernatural Tour.

Live reviews

It's pretty incredible that 70's soul-funk-pop originators Earth Wind & Fire are still functioning as a band, and even more of a testament to them that they continue to tour today. As a live act, they haven't lost one jot of funk-laden, stuff-struttin' soul, and their musical energy onstage at the ripe old age they are is commendable.

They are truly living legends of our time, boasting six Grammy awards and more nominations to boot, as well as being responsible for some of the most enduring disco classics in history, such as 'Boogie Wonderland', 'Shining Star', and the eponymous 'We Are Family'. The band also go down in history as the fist African-American group to sell out shows at New York's Madison Square Garden, and in 2008 Barack Obama invited them to perform at the White House for the first social event of his new administration.

I was lucky enough to catch Earth Wind & Fire at the UK festival Bestival in 2011, and the show was a delicious slice of pop-disco soul in the sunshine, and with all (and there were a lot of them!) their major hits covered. There wasn't a soul in the crowd who wasn't pulling their best Saturday Night Fever moves throughout- an excellent effort by all, EWF!

Great, great show by both bands. The Elements were AMAZING! Stunned that Philip Bailey has lost none of his vocal range. They played all their hits and the moment of silence for Maurice White was moving. Highly recommend this show to any serious EWF fan.

Todd Rundgren at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix

Danny Zelisko Presents will bring An Evening with Todd Rundgren to the Celebrity Theatre on June 19, 2024.

Rundgren is, in many ways, the quintessential rock ‘n’ roll enigma, a restless spirit who’s been following his own lead from the start.

As a producer, he’s responsible for classic albums by the New York Dolls, Badfinger, Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, XTC, the Tubes and Meat Loaf, among others.

His “Something/Anything?” album made the Top 200 on Rolling Stone’s 500-greatest-albums-ever list. The left turn that followed that perfect pop masterpiece, “A Wizard, A True Star,” was panned by critics at the time but has inspired reams of raving re-evaluation through the year, the Guardian hailing it as “harmonically richer and more ambitiously deranged than ‘The White Album.’"

His work with Utopia has been embraced by prog-rock fans while power-pop enthusiasts tend to worship the catchier side of his career, including his work with the Nazz. But to the general public, he’s still pretty much defined by five hit singles: “We Gotta Get You a Woman,” “I Saw the Light,” “Hello It’s Me,” “Can We Still Be Friends” and “Bang the Drum All Day.”
