More Information

Doubtful Sound is a beautiful fiord; three times longer than Milford Sound and a surface area ten times larger with twisting arms. With its rugged peaks, verdant rainforest and twisting, hidden inlets, Doubtful Sound will take your breath away.

There’s no direct road access, so the only way you can to get to Doubtful Sound is a cruise across the picturesque Lake Manapouri, followed by a bus trip over Wilmot Pass - New Zealand's most expensive (and majestic) road. We’ll pause along the way to experience the dense Fiordland rainforest and view Doubtful Sound glistening below. This isolation makes this fiord a very special place, only those in the know get to see.

Once you arrive, you will board the Patea Explorer for a 3 hour (approximately) cruise on Doubtful Sound - a spectacular pristine fiord. During the cruise, our knowledgeable and friendly skipper or nature guide will share with you their passion for the region. They’re always ready to answer questions, point out landmarks and provide all the information about the varied wildlife you may see, including dolphins, fur seals, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin.

The Southern Express, M.V. Sinbad, Mariner or Fiordland Navigator may replace the Patea Explorer if maintenance or schedules require.

Things you should know

  • You’ll cruise across crystal clear Lake Manapouri to West Arm
  • A highlight is the coach trip through Fiordland’s rainforest and over Wilmot Pass
  • Your Skipper or Nature Guide will let you know all about the region's unique flora and fauna
  • Doubtful Sound is in remote Fiordland, with no WIFI available, the perfect place to unplug and recharge

Extra information

  • Due to the multi-leg journey and floating wharf access, guests will need to have a reasonable level of mobility
  • Manapouri Café will be open daily from 9.00am. Café menu has a range of beautiful homemade food & Allpress Coffee for you to enjoy pre-cruise or to take with you
  • Snacks and drinks are also available onboard
  • The tour is suitable for all ages

Getting there

All Doubtful Sound experiences start at our Manapouri Visitor Centre, located at 64 Waiau Street. Manapouri is a 2.5 – 3 hour drive from Queenstown and 30 minute drive from Te Anau.

What to bring

  • Non-slip shoes/boots, waterproof jacket, warm sweater/fleece jacket, sunscreen/sunglasses, insect repellent and camera.
  • Please remember to bring personal medication including for asthma and allergies.
  • As this is a 7-hour adventure we highly recommend you bring a packed lunch or order a lunch box from our Manapouri Café.
Hard to find words to describe this experience. Our day started in fog and mist, then brilliant sunrise, followed by bright blue sky and ending in overcast clouds. This day is forever etched into my memory bank. The dolphins came to play with us. the sea was calm and when the engines stopped the silence was sublime. Next time I'm booking the overnight stay. alicS7411DF, Via TripAdvisor
One of the most amazing trips I have done. Highly recommend. We had a beautiful day and the Sea was calm. Saw dolphins ans seals and the views were to die for. Happiness59684517794, Via TripAdvisor
A wonderful way to experience Doubtful Sound. 45 Minutes to get across the lake, then a fun bus ride over the mountain to the boat. What made it special, on the day we did the tour, was that it had rained the night before and into the morning. That mean hundreds of waterfalls along the sound (actually a fjord). The boat cruises slowly and you get plenty of time to take in the views. Best of all, on the return trip, the captain goes up a side channel and stops in front of a wonderful waterfall. With engines off and people requested to be silent, and only 20-30 feet from shore, the quietness was surreal! A wonderful experience. We did not do a boat trip into Milford Sound (fjord) so we cannot compare. But we can highly recommend Doubtful Sound! MillVA, Via TripAdvisor
Our day visiting Doubtful Sound was a highlight of what was already a fantastic tour of the west coast of the south island. Getting out to the sound, on a boat, then a bus, then a good three hours on a boat on the sound, was a wonderful experience. Our bus driver was knowledgable and shared pertinent, interesting facts about the extraordinary landscape we travelled through. This is certainly not a cheap tour, but by far worth every cent and we would do this tour again over just the two hours on Milford Sound. sarahmM5133DM, Via TripAdvisor
Despite the rain we had a fantastic day trip. The RealNZ team provide an exceptional service and the boats were very nice with plenty of space. The Fiord Board cheese platter was just delicious and worth indulging in. I loved how the engines were turned off for 5 minutes so we could hear the silence and nature. It felt magical to have 130 passengers stand together just appreciating it all. It felt so special. The scenery is stunning, it was a great day out.
Our Doubtful Sound Day Cruise was amazing. We were blessed with great weather, DOLPHINS (!!!) and a great RealNZ crew (coach drivers, nature guides and boat crew) that kept us safe and also enriched and amused with their commentary. Highly recommend.
No adjectives to describe what a taonga this area is. Until you visit you can’t understand the sheer size of these fiords and the cliff faces. We were lucky to see four groups of dolphins who put on a show. Excellent commentary from both boat and bus drivers. kirks73 Nelson, New Zealand, Via TripAdvisor
Wonderful trip during unseasonable Spring snowstorm. Everything was so well organised from check-in to return to base. Each aspect of the return 3-part journey - boat across Lake Manapouri, coach across Wilmot Pass and the actual Doubtful Sound cruise - was brilliant. Coach Driver Jonny made us feel very safe as he navigated the snow chained coach across the snowy mountain range. The cruise was awe inspiring. I’d like to return on a sunny blue sky day but being in Fiordland during a blizzard (at sea level) just made it so impressive. Lots of waterfalls and breaks in the storm allowed wonderful long distance views. Simply stunning! MichaelDH, Christchurch, New Zealand, Via TripAdvisor

How long does it take to travel to Manapouri?

From Queenstown to Manapouri by car or coach takes around 2 hrs 45 mins and from Te Anau around 30 minutes.  For more information refer to our Driving Times webpage.

Yes, we have plenty of free parking at Manapouri. Daytime car parking is provided adjacent to the Visitor Centre. Overnight car parking is a available on View St, a short 2 minute walk from our Manapouri Visitor Centre.

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

doubtful sound cruise price

Our places. Our experiences. Milford and Doubtful Sounds, NZ.

Milford Sound at the mountainous north end of Fiordland National Park is the classic fiord - a deep water inlet between steep sided high mountains.  Milford Sound is a middle-sized fiord at around 13 kms in length and it is famous for its dramatic scenery, especially Mitre Peak.  This fiord is the most accessible of Fiordland National Park’s 14 fiords and it can be reached by bus, car or flight connections from Queenstown.

Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound.  Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.  Its three arms are Hall, Crooked and First Arm.  It is famous for its wilderness scenery and wildlife sightings.  To get to Doubtful Sound visitors first take a launch trip across Lake Manapouri and drive over Wilmot Pass.

Visitors with enough time choose to visit both fiords as they have different characters.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer  (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn  (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46  - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter  (June-August) 5-9 Celsius /  41  - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring  (September-November) 10-19 Celsius  / 50   - 66 Fahrenheit

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain.  When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.  A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors.  In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

Online transactions/prices are conducted in what currency?

All prices and transactions on the RealNZ website are in New Zealand dollars (NZD).  This is specified on the Terms & Conditions page.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise vessels (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator). In addition to this we also have portable defibrillators at the following locations: •    Milford Sound Visitor Terminal •    RealNZ Visitor Centre, Manapouri •    Cavern House (Te Anau Glowworm Caves) •    Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant, Walter Peak •    TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship •    Stewart Island Ferry (Bluff - Oban - Bluff)

Do I need to bring a car seat for my child?

Car seats are not mandatory on our coaches, and we do not have then available for hire. Parents are more than welcome to bring their own car seats.

What happens if my travel is disrupted by COVID-19?

If your travel plans are disrupted by COVID-19, our standard cancellation policy applies. This includes flexible cancellation options designed to accommodate unexpected changes. To ensure you are fully covered for any unforeseen circumstances, we strongly encourage you to obtain travel insurance. Travel insurance can help cover any costs incurred from having to cancel or reschedule your trip due to COVID-19, giving you peace of mind.

Doubtful Sound Cruise Reviews

1. doubtful sound wilderness day cruise from manapouri.

  • Duration:  7 hours
  • Departure: 64 Waiau Street, Manapouri 9679
  • Departure Time: 7:30 AM or 10:00 AM
  • Includes:  Live commentary on board

With so much natural beauty in the world now explored by visitors, it’s hard to keep things “untouched” or the way they are without human interference.

The Doubtful Sound falls into that category and is a fantastic alternative to the Milford Sound, which is known to have many more crowds. If that sounds like fun to you, do yourself a favor and check out the Doubtful Sound Wilderness Day Cruise from Manapouri tour !

What I love about this tour (aside from everything) is that it perfectly combines tranquility, wildlife encounters, and jaw-dropping landscapes!

The tour starts out by meeting up at the Visitor Centre in Manapouri, where we were checked in and headed to our catamaran vessel for the day, gliding across the serene lake.

Taking in the incredible beauty of the Fiordland National Park is worth it alone, so make sure to take plenty of photos and videos before arriving in the West Arm.

Upon arrival, we made our transition to land and got onto a well-kept coach with plenty of room, enjoying a scenic drive over the Wilmot Pass.

While I didn’t know this ahead of time, this stretch is actually known as the most beautiful in the world, complete with thick rainforests and jagged mountaintops!

As we cruised along, our guide did a great job of sharing entertaining anecdotes, historical and cultural info, and plenty of insights into the unique flora and fauna found here.

Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or simply love animals, you’ll enjoy getting to see adorable critters like the bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and even the Fiordland crested penguin, if you’re lucky!

The Deep Cove wasn’t just a “cool” experience – turning off the motors here was an almost spiritual experience, where I felt like I connected with nature in a way I never have before. Please, if you’re on-the-fence about seeing the Doubtful Sound, do not pass this magical opportunity up.

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure: 85 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau 9600
  • Departure Time: 9:15 AM
  • Includes:  Lake Manapouri cruise, Doubtful Sound cruise, Air-conditioned vehicle, Live commentary on board

If you have a day free to explore, allow me to suggest this incredible adventure into one of the most remote, untouched corners of the world.

The Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Te Anau tour is a raw, unbridled experience that combines multiple modes of transport to immerse you in the natural beauty of this pristine region.

From lush rainforests to crystal-clear waters, this is a perfect day filled with gorgeous scenery and fantastic guides to lead the way!

We started off in the morning, with a comfortable van ride to Manapouri which was a very relaxing way to start the tour, while listening to our guide tell us about the areas we passed by.

The air-conditioned vehicle was nice and spacious and allowed us some time to really learn before we arrived to our boat ride tour. Seeing the sound was jaw-dropping, with a kind of raw beauty that makes it feel like you’ve stepped into some sort of legendary movie set.

The boat ride was simply breathtaking, with the vessel offering plenty of room and stability to enjoy different perspectives of the panoramic lake views and the dense Fiordland rainforest.

Honestly, this little cruise alone is worth it, but you’ll love the journey over to Wilmot Pass as well, complete with gorgeous alpine moss gardens with the Doubtful Sound glistening in the background.

Upon arrival to the mysterious Deep Cove, we boarded a nicely sized catamaran where we glided through this majestic UNESCO-listed national park that’s many times bigger than the bustling Milford Sound.

We had plenty of photo opportunities, and I wasted not a minute on taking videos of the granite mountains, tumultuous waterfalls, and even some bottlenose dolphins and seals!

I will say that this was a more tiring tour, but it was more than worth getting to see this rugged natural landscape in such an authentic way.

It’s perfectly representative of New Zealand’s uncompromising, untouched wilderness, with educated guides who will let you know everything you need about it!

3. Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Queenstown

  • Duration:  12 hours
  • Departure: 88 Beach Street, Queenstown 9300
  • Departure Time: 6:55 AM or 7:40 AM

If you’re in Queenstown and would like a day away from all the hustle and bustle, this is the perfect daytime activity. The Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Queenstown  is perfect for nature lovers, history buffs, or those who have an appreciation for beautiful views.

With professional, expert guides to lead the way, you’ll gain fascinating insight into the area’s ecology and history, further enriching this incredible travel experience!

The tour starts out with us heading to a convenient meeting point in the middle of Queenstown, which was just a few blocks from our hotel. We met up with our guide, who was super sweet and friendly, answering all of our questions before boarding our vehicle for the day.

As we cruised along, our guide regaled us with plenty of cool conversation complete with historical accounts, personal anecdotes about the area, and its ecology.

We finally arrived to Lake Manapouri, located in the expansive UNESCO site that is the thick Fiordland National Park, where we hopped on a ferry and explored the tranquil waters.

We then headed up to Wilmot Pass, where we stopped to take some incredible photos of us with the Doubtful Sound in the background.

After that, we headed back down to the amazing Deep Cove, where we witnessed plenty of cascading waterfalls and learned about how Deep Cove was only accessible from the ocean or Wilmot Pass until the 60s!

As an animal lover, I had a blast being able to see little fur seals make appearances, along with the rare Fiordland crested penguins and even bottlenose dolphins that played alongside our vessel!

Our skipper explained their natural behaviors and how the seals are much different from sea lions due to their smaller size and little pointy noses! It was a great time out in this wild place, with trusty staff there to ensure our safety and entertainment along the way!

Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise Guide: Tips and Review!

Want to find out what the Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise is really like… and if it’s worth it?

Please note that this blog post most likely contains affiliate links to products or services I use and love! If you click on the links, it means I get a little extra pocket money at no additional cost to you. This is what keeps my website ticking over – thank you!

I’d long heard the South Island travellers’ hot tip: Doubtful Sound is THE place to go if you ever make it to Fiordland National Park. Lauded as the most beautiful, extraordinary experience many have had in New Zealand, the expectations were sky-high.

At 421m deep and 40km long, Doubtful is the deepest and second longest fiord in South Island. This means there are many magical corners to explore! And gosh, did my experience exploring them only exceed my expectations?

Read on to discover exactly what made my Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise experience so enchanting and unforgettable.

Table of Contents

Where does the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise depart from?

The Doubtful Sound cruise departs from Lake Manapouri .

How to get to Lake Manapouri:

You will need to make your own way to Manapouri. Most visitors do this by self-driving.

However, if you’re not renting a car in New Zealand, then the best option is to get a coach ticket. Real Journeys (who run the cruise) also run several shuttle services – you will need to book this in advance to make sure you arrive on time. Some shuttle services from Queenstown go directly to Te Anau. If necessary, you can take a taxi from here to Manapouri, as they’re fairly close.

Alternatively, make things easier and book a tour that includes transport from Queenstown, such as this Doubtful Sound day trip from Queenstown , or this 3 day Doubtful Sound adventure from Queenstown.

It’s also possible to take a scenic flight from Queenstown.

Your tour will begin from the RealNZ visitor centre at Lake Manapouri. From here, you’ll take a cruise across Lake Manapouri, followed by a magical bus ride to West Arm where you’ll board the ship.

Which Doubtful Sound cruise should you pick?

There are three main options for the Doubtful Sound cruise, all of which are run by expert tour operator RealNZ (previously named Real Journeys). If you’re wondering what the best Doubtful Sound overnight cruise is for your needs, this is my advice:

  • One-day Doubtful Sound cruise: This option is best if you only have time for a day trip. However, if you only have one day, you might also consider doing to Milford Sound cruise instead. Milford Sound is smaller, so you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything by exploring it one day. (Of course, you could also do one of each… but in that case, I’d recommend doing two days in Doubtful Sound, below, to make the most of your time.)

See prices or book tickets: One-day Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise

See prices or book tickets: One day Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Queenstown

  • Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise (one night, two days): If your South Island itinerary allows for two days in Doubtful Sound, I highly recommend it. Since Doubtful covers such a large area, in one day, you simply won’t have time to discover how huge and breathtaking the fiord is. Staying on the boat overnight and being able to watch the sunset over the water is an unforgettable experience.

See prices or book tickets: Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise

  • Two days, three nights (WINTER ONLY): in this tour option, you’ll have a whole day on the water without having to travel by land to get there and back. This is undoubtedly the best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Fiordland.

See prices or book tickets: check the RealNZ website for more details.

If you have the time and budget for an overnight option, I highly recommend it. If I had to pick the single best and most memorable thing I did in New Zealand, then this would be it!

SUMMARY: the basics – what to expect on your Doubtful Sound Cruise

Read my full overnight cruise review below, but here’s an overview of what you can expect to see and do on the cruise.

Exploring the ship: get behind the captain’s wheel, watch the anchor go down at night, and climb the ladders and staircases to get different perspectives of the magical Doubtful Sound. You can also curl up in your private or shared cosy cabin each night.

Wildlife: Alongside an abundance of native birds, including albatrosses and the elusive Fiordland Crested Penguin, you might also see bottlenose dolphins, whales, fur seals and whales. While fur seals are a common sight, you’ll have to get lucky to see the whales and penguins!

There’s a wildlife guide on board with you the whole time, so don’t worry about missing out on anything as they’ll keep their eyes peeled for you. (Read more about the wildlife I saw during my trip in the detailed review section below!)

Food and drink: Food comes as buffet options at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dietary requirements are catered for (phew, as I’m a vegan traveller!) but make sure you let the crew know in advance. Tea, coffee, juices, and water are covered, but you can also purchase additional drinks from the bar.

Activities: I go into more details about onboard activities below, but one of the best is the opportunity to kayak on the sound!

MY DOUBTFUL SOUND OVERNIGHT CRUISE EXPERIENCE + personal review

My memories of Doubtful Sound remain very special to me, so below are my personal experiences. Read on to find out what the overnight cruise is really like, and things you can expect to see on the way. If you want general travel tips, rather than my personal Doubtful Sound review, then skip to the end of this article and check the FAQ below.

THE JOURNEY TO DOUBTFUL SOUND FROM TE ANAU

Reaching Doubtful Sound is a journey in itself.

The tour began at the RealNZ office at Lake Manapouri. As I boarded our first ferry on Manapouri Lake, I was excited, and from the offset, things were off to a promising start. This first hour-long cruise glided through breathtaking Fiordland mountain scenery towards our connection at West Arm.

After arriving on the other side of Manapouri Lake, we boarded a 45-minute bus journey that manoeuvred around the twisty mountain road that formed the Wilmot Pass. This 671m high pass was completed to assist the construction of the Manapouri Hydroelectricity Project, connecting the power station at Lake Manapouri’s West Arm to boats offloading equipment at Doubtful Sound’s Deep Cove.

Lake Manapouri cruise review

After passing waterfalls, rivers, and scenic viewpoints, we arrived at Deep Cove, where the Fiordland Navigator was waiting for us.

There was a hum of anticipation as we boarded the ship. And, following a brief introduction on how to safely make the most of our adventure , we were given the keys to our cabins and time to investigate our home for the next two nights.

I wasn’t aware before boarding that the RealNZ Doubtful Sound cruise takes a different route every time. Depending on weather conditions and potential wildlife sightings, the ship will take the smoothest yet most exciting route possible. This means every trip is unique!

Waking up in a different part of the Sound each morning is a treat. During my trip, we began the second day at Crooked Arm and the third at Bradshaw Sound. Each spot has unique views, all seemingly more spectacular than the last.

OUR SHIP – THE FIORDLAND NAVIGATOR

Fiordland Navigator is a purpose-built ship ideal for Doubtful’s distinct balance of soothing exploration. While the exterior and dining saloon possess the allure of a bygone era, this charm matches perfectly with cosy cabins and comfortable inside and outdoor observation decks.

But the best part of the ship was the crew – from the hardworking chef to the friendly staff, you always felt in great hands.

Even the bridge was accessible, meaning you could chat with the skipper as he drove the ship. This, along with the commentary from the onboard nature guide, means visitors are always invited to learn more about the area and feel involved. Even the youngest kids on board got a chance to drive!

We also got to watch the crew raise the anchor. But don’t worry if you miss it; you’ll definitely hear it! Fortunately, the crew calls out all events, so you can unwind in the warmth, knowing you won’t miss anything.

the epic Fiordland Navigator on Doubtful Sound

On a side note, dietary requirements were accounted for throughout the day, from breakfast options to numerous choices at the 3 -course buffet dinner – including vegan and gluten-free alternatives. This was a relief, as I know from experience how hit and miss it can be travelling with a dietary requirement!

Visitors could freely wander the ship, building our day with spectacular views from every corner of the vessel.  With spacious outdoor or indoor viewing decks, I never felt crowded trying to see the views. This only added to the peaceful and secluded setting. With no other boats on the water, it felt like a very rare opportunity to gaze upon an otherwise untouched land…

THE WILDLIFE OF DOUBTFUL SOUND

If you’re a wildlife lover or birding enthusiast, you will be spoilt on your Doubtful Sound cruise. Many seabirds and marine life are home here, although no specific individual animal spotting is guaranteed. This makes sense for a company committed to conservation – this is generally the sign of an ethical animal encounter. When animals are wild and free, they appear as and when they wish. (For me, this is essential to truly enjoy a wildlife experience, so I really valued this.)

Among the common sightings are fur seals and albatross, and I loved seeing the fur seals relaxing on the rocks.

I was also lucky enough to see bottlenose dolphins swimming in the Sound! Seeing them swimming and breaching alongside small waterfalls and crooked trees was amazing. Best of all, it began to snow. Imagine that – watching dolphins jump through a flurry of falling snow!

pod of bottlenose dolphins in Doubtful Sound in the snow at Winter

Unfortunately, I didn’t see any Fiordland penguins during my trip, though I wasn’t disappointed since they are one of the world’s rarest penguin species. On occasion, whales are spotted as you sail into the Tasman Sea!

At this point, I must shout out Div, our onboard wildlife expert. His passion and fascination with the wild was contagious, and despite his keen interest, he remained very accessible and perceptive. Respected by children and adults alike, both long-term nature lovers and the vaguely curious were able to gain something from his commentary and willingness to answer questions.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE DOUBTFUL SOUND OVERNIGHT CRUISE

While impossible to get bored of the everchanging scenery, there are also various ways to thoughtfully plan activities throughout the cruise. Participation is not mandatory, but everyone was keen to join in during my trip! The second day’s kayak and tender boat adventure was the most notable activity. Whether paddling your kayak or relaxing in a tender boat, there’s no better way to get up close and personal with flora and fauna. Doubtful Sound looks immense from afar, but when you get close, you notice all the distinctive plants, rocks, and trees growing in the valley. The birch trees, who were the inspiration behind Lord of the Ring’s Treebeard, looked particularly characterful when dressed in a fresh suit of snow.

visiting Doubtful Sound in Winter

After climbing back aboard the Navigator, those brave enough took the ‘Polar Plunge’ and jumped back in the Sound’s cold water from the deck!

On board, there are various board games and books to enjoy, though my favourite discovery was the piano! The guests still lingering in the dining saloon post-breakfast were courteous enough to not only accept my request to play the piano but to politely applaud after. I very seldom get the chance to play music, and having the opportunity to unexpectedly practice in such a welcoming, unique environment (on board a literal ship in the wilderness!) remains a very special memory.

For a restful after-dinner activity, I headed to the viewing area for a nature talk by Div (our resident nature guide). This was a fab way to get the lowdown on this wild region of New Zealand. From clips of previous animal encounters and fascinating facts to learn about conservation efforts and what we can do to help, the talks were the perfect way to conclude each day.

THE MANY MOODS OF DOUBTFUL SOUND

I soon came to realise that climbing aboard the Fiordland Navigator was a gateway to more than just one mysterious fiord. In fact, cruising Doubtful Sound is like setting sail upon the waters of a thousand worlds at once.

The changing weather conditions mean one hundred different experiences of one location – or ‘the Many Moods of Doubtful Sound, as Div fondly called it. There is no ‘wrong way’ to see Fiordland, with the landscape transforming anew with each day or hour.

Famously stunning in rainfall, some say ‘you haven’t seen the Sounds before you’ve seen it in the rain’! Stormy weather brings the landscape to life, creating hundreds of waterfalls in just a few hours. Only a few of the falls are permanent, such as the aforementioned Brown Falls.

That said, stormy weather will make you reluctant to voyage into the Tasman Sea, where you feel the waves at their most choppy.

During my trip on fortunately calm seas, Div pointed out the Hares’ Ears – two rocks reaching 18m out of the water. Div told us he’d seen waves crashing the entire way over the formation, rendering them barely visible! Usually a calm, slow trip, the Tasman Sea is the only time you’re warned to sit down or hold onto the railings.

During my visit, our lucky conditions led to a vibrant double rainbow majestically arching over the entrance of the Doubtful Sound as we returned from the sea – a very inviting return!

The staff were also excited by the double rainbow on the first evening – just as they were by the serene, reflective sunset on the second. It reminded me, once again, that every trip to Doubtful Sound is unique, and there are always more natural treasures to be found in the skies above to the waters below.

The reflective scenery on our final night was otherworldly, with snow hanging low on the mountains and a calm sky painting the water with its changing colours.

A rainbow over doubtful sound

On that final day, we were all invited to listen to a natural concert – the so-called Sound of Silence – where we each put down our phones and cameras, and even the ship’s engine went quiet. The calm waters respected the natural symphony and joined us almost in stillness, with the waves and winds only at a whisper. I listened to the melody of a single, distant waterfall and the strumming of rain upon the deck. This was peace, or as close to it as I have experienced.

And then, the sun descended as our route switched directions, and guests’ excited murmuring and motions returned. The brightly humming engine serenaded us into the night.

REALNZ DOUBTFUL SOUND OVERNIGHT CRUISE FAQ

Best time of year to visit doubtful sound .

Autumn (March to May) is a special time in New Zealand in general, since the Autumn leaves bring a little seasonal much of the country’s woodland. However, in Fiordland, many of the trees are evergreen. No matter – Autumn brings mild weather to Fiordland, although things begin to cool down towards the end of the season.

Summer (Dec to Feb) is the best time if you want sunny weather, late evenings, and less chance of rain and wind. (Though, in Fiordland, you might have rainy weather at any time of year!) Temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celcius / 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s a great time to take a dip in Te Anau Lake during your trip to Fiordland!

Spring (March to May), while pleasant in much of the country, brings unsettled weather to Doubtful Sound, with high chances of wind or rain. On the bright side, you’ll see vibrant wildflowers and, if you’re planning Fiordland as just one stop on your itinerary, it’s a great time to visit NZ in general, with cute lambs frolicking around the fields and cherry blossoms blooming.

Winter (June to August) is an epic time to visit Fiordland, as long as you don’t mind the cold and shorter days! The weather is more settled than usual, with snow topping the mountains. If you’re very lucky, like me, you’ll even get to see it snow in Doubtful Sound! Very occasionally, the Wilmot Pass is closed to high levels of snowfall or flooding, when cruises are cancelled. I adored my Winter Doubtful Sound cruise, and don’t think I’d change my experience for the world.

What to pack for Doubtful Sound overnight cruises

In the summer, bring shades, a sun hat and sunscreen and in Winter, you’ll definitely need a warm winter coat, layers, and a hat and gloves. (I had proper ski gloves with me as I get cold easily.)

At any time of year, you’ll need a raincoat. Doubtful Sound receives, on average, 3000-6000 millimetres of rainfall a year!

I recommend bringing a warm layer even in summer as the weather is unpredictable. Bring comfy shoes as the deck could get slippy if it rains, and don’t forget a reusable water bottle. (This is the filter water bottle I use for travel – use my discount code HAG15 for 15% off!)

Also bring a comfortable change of clothing, personal toiletries and overnight clothes such as pyjamas, insect repellent, cash for the bar, and a camera. Oh, and swimwear… just in case. Trust me.

How big is Doubtful Sound?

Doubtful Sound is 421m deep and 40km long, making it the deepest and second longest fiord in South Island.

Doubtful Sound cruise 3

Why is it called Doubtful Sound?

Back in 1770, Captain Cook named it ‘Doubtful Harbour.’ He actually didn’t enter the inlet he saw from the ocean, as he wasn’t sure if he would be able to navigate it via sailing.

In later years, it was renamed ‘Doubtful Sound’ by whalers and sealers.

Interestingly, Doubtful Sound is not a Sound at all, but a Fiord. A Fiord is a deep and narrow sea inlet, usually characterised by long corridors of water flanked by high cliffs. Fiords were originally formed by glaciers.

What is Doubtful Sound’s Māori name?

Doubtful Sound’s Māori name is Patea. Patea aptly translates to ‘the place of silence,’ and to this day remains free of noise pollution, staying true to its peaceful name.

Is Doubtful Sound worth visiting?

Yes, Doubtful Sound is absolutely worth visiting! From the magical sights and abundance of wildlife to the memorable experience of staying on board a ship, this is one of the absolute best things you can do on the South Island.

In the two and a half years I lived in New Zealand, this is the best thing I did alongside volunteering at an animal sanctuary.

A striking landscape of ancient, glacially-carved valleys, Doubtful Sound Patea is a panorama of awe. Discover a natural landscape that is both precious and powerful.

One of the finest examples of a fiord environment

Doubtful Sound Patea spans a staggering 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the head of the fiord to the Tasman Sea. It is the deepest of New Zealand’s 14 fiords and its immense size leaves all who visit feeling humbled yet uplifted by its powerful physical presence.

The fiord branches into three arms which provide opportunity for scenic cruise boat passengers to explore up-close sheer cliff faces, impressive waterfalls and tranquil overnight moorings. Doubtful Sound Patea also provides shelter to New Zealand’s southernmost population of bottlenose dolphins and tawak i, the Fiordland Crested Penguin.

Spend just a short amount of time immersed in Doubtful Sound Patea and it is easy to understand why early Māori named the fiord, Patea-meaning ‘place of silence’. Here, visitors find silence amongst a dramatic landscape with echoing birdsong or cascading waterfalls the only sound to break the stillness.

With no road to the fiord, the experience of getting to Doubtful Sound Patea is an adventure in itself.  Doubtful Sound Patea is only accessible to visitors by a tour excursion departing from Manapouri.

Doubtful Sound Patea's English name transpired when Captain James Cook approached the entrance of the fiord during his voyage of 1770. The vast fiord was only just visible from the sea and Cook decided if they ventured into the fiord it would be “doubtful” they would be able to sail back out against the prevailing westerly wind. He named it 'Doubtful Harbour' and carried on up the coast. The area was renamed Doubtful Sound  many years later by whalers and sealers. Today, visitors to the fiord bear witness to scenery mostly unchanged since the time of early Māori and Cook’s cautious exploration. Doubtful Sound Patea has kept its stunning beauty well hidden and shares it with those who truly seek a wilderness experience.

INCREDIBLE  DOUBTFUL SOUND PATEA EXPERIENCES

Larger, yet less visited than its neighbour Milford Sound Piopiotahi, Doubtful Sound Patea is a popular choice for wilderness seekers and those willing to go a little further to see a little more.

Day cruises and overnight cruises to Doubtful Sound Patea depart from Manapouri, just a 20-minute drive from Te Anau. Prepare to be blown away by lush rainforest, immense waterfalls and local populations of kekeno, the New Zealand Fur Seals and tawaki, the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin.

There is no settlement here as there is in Milford Sound Piopiotahi, instead Deep Cove is home to an outdoor education centre and a small fleet of fishing boats which work out at sea in search of prized cod and crayfish (rock lobster).

There are many ways to experience Doubtful Sound Patea:

  • Tours depart Manapouri daily
  • Overnight cruises in Doubtful Sound Patea offer the chance to relax and savour this special place, and to literally experience the ‘sound of silence’.
  • Incredible day and overnight Doubtful Sound Patea  kayak trips operate throughout the summer months.
  • Budget accommodation is available at Deep Cove Hostel Outdoor Education Centre.
  • Take a scenic flight from Te Anau, Manapouri  or Queenstown by fixed wing airplane, seaplane (including landing on the fiord) or helicopter.

GETTING TO DOUBTFUL SOUND PATEA

Doubtful Sound Patea is accessible by boat transfer departing from Pearl Harbour in Manapouri and travelling across Lake Manapouri to West Arm.  Here you will be awed by the hydro-electric power station of the Save Manapouri Campaign fame, and although tours are not available to the power station, you will have the chance to spend time at the information centre. You will then travel by coach over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove where you will board your Doubtful Sound Patea scenic cruise boat. The Wilmot Pass is a 671m-high (230ft) pass connecting the west arm of Lake Manapouri to Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound Patea. Day trips and overnight trips to Doubtful Sound Patea include your transport by boat and bus.

Patea / Doubtful Sound’s inaccessibility is its crowning glory. While a Doubtful Sound Patea tour will take a whole day, it is well worth dedicating the time to soaking up this epic landscape.

DOUBTFUL SOUND PATEA WEATHER

Glorious on sunny days and breathtaking on rainy days, does it really matter what the weather is like in Doubtful Sound Patea? Just like its famous neighbour Milford Sound Piopiotahi,  Doubtful Sound Patea receives a huge amount of annual rainfall (around 6 metres/20 feet) and luckily for you, there’s a good chance it will rain when you visit. So, pack your raincoat, your sunscreen and prepare for whatever may come.

As it is the equinox period you can expected unsettled weather patterns including the occasional exciting storm! Daylight savings starts in October, making the evenings longer.

Patea Summer

Dec-Feb: The warmest months of the year in Fiordland. During the summer months Milford Sound often experiences a cool day breeze as the warm air rises. The best times of day to explore Milford are early morning or late afternoon and evening. Daylight hours are much longer so you won't miss out! Keep a look out for the Fiordland Christmas tree - the southern rata has bright red flowers, not to be confused with the pohutukawa found further north.

Patea Autumn

March-May: You won't notice an change to the colours of the trees as Fiordland native forest is ever-green however the days will start to draw in and be cooler in the mornings and evenings creating moody misty scenes. The weather during the day is still a pleasant temperature but bring layers to beat the morning and evening chill.

Patea Winter

June-Aug: Surprisingly, winter in Patea / Doubtful Sound is the most settled time of year. Although the daylight hours are much shorter the skies are often blue and cloudless. The air is crisp and fresh, and snow is seen on the mountains. A trip into Patea / Doubtful Sound is a spectacular event with snow to low levels and sometimes even ice on the fiord! Things to Do

The best doubtful sound cruise to get off the beaten path.

A visit to the South Island of New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without a boat cruise through the majestic fiords. A Doubtful Sound cruise is one of the top things to do in Fiordland and for good reason.

Tucked away in the remote location of the far southwest of New Zealand, Doubtful Sound is not easy to get to, making the experience all the more special. The remote location, untouched beauty and exciting wildlife deliver an adventure like no other.

The only way to experience this unique and pristine part of the world is by boat, either as a day trip through a local tour company out of Manapouri or by sea, which is less common unless you charter a boat or are embarking on a cruise between Australia and New Zealand.

cruise doubtful sound

Having personally experienced Doubtful Sound both ways, via a large cruise ship from the sea and as a day trip through a local tour company from the mainland, both experiences were impressive.

However, I really enjoyed the expert commentary of the local tour. Plus, the journey to Doubtful Sound from the mainland offered an off-the-beaten path experience, with smaller boats that can access parts of the sound the bigger cruise ships can’t.

The best way to experience Doubtful Sound is by going on this Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise which departs from the Manapouri Visitors Centre near Te Anau.

Or for an even deeper experience, you can spend the night in the sounds on this Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise . A truly remarkable experience in a remote and pristine part of the country.

For many visitors, a cruise through the sounds is the highlight of their visit to New Zealand and an experience I highly recommend if you can fit it into your itinerary and budget.

Here are some of the incredible experiences you can expect on a Doubtful Sound cruise as well as some useful information to help with your planning.

About Doubtful Sound

First, here are some quick facts about Doubtful Sound that you may find interesting, plus clarification around some of the terms we use here in New Zealand that can be a little confusing at first.

Doubtful Sound was named Patea by the Maori settlers which translates to “a place of silence”. For this reason, Doubtful Sound is often referred to as the ‘sound of silence’. Once you arrive in the sound and the boat shuts down the engine you will get to experience it for yourself…it’s really beautiful!

It was in 1770 when Captain Cook came across the fiord while sailing around New Zealand but did not enter as he was doubtful it could be navigated under sail. He named it Doubtful Harbour which was later renamed Doubtful Sound by whalers and sealers who inhabited the area.

Despite its name, Doubtful Sound is actually a fiord (or fjord as it is known in other parts of the world). A sound is formed by flooding of a river valley whereas a fiord is a valley formed by glaciers that filled up with water when the glaciers melted.

Doubtful Sound was formed by 20 glaciation events that took place over thousands of years, hence it is technically a fiord. However, in New Zealand, all maritime fiords use sound in their name. Confused yet!

body of water with tall green mountain peaks in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand

At approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) long and up to 421 meters (1381 feet) deep, Doubtful Sound is the second-longest and deepest fiord in the South Island. It’s made up of four arms – First Arm, Crooked Arm, Hall Arm and the innermost part of the fiord called Deep Cove.

Deep Cove is also home to New Zealand’s largest, and fairly controversial, hydroelectric power station which was built to power an aluminium smelter in the small rural town of Bluff.

Additionally, Doubtful Sound has unique marine and wildlife including a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins and the rare crested penguin.

The high volume of rainfall in the area creates a unique environment of tannin-stained freshwater running off from surrounding mountains layered over saltwater. This creates a dark low salinity habitat where deep sea marine species, such as black coral, can exist in the shallower depths of the sound.

It’s fair to say that Doubtful Sound is a pretty special place.

Why Take a Doubtful Sound Cruise

Located deep within Fiordland National Park, there is no direct road access in which you can drive yourself to Doubtful Sound. You’ll need to book in with a local tour operator who will arrange transport from Manapouri.

From here, you’ll travel by boat across the lake to West Arm, then by coach (bus) over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, where you’ll board another boat to commence your cruise through Doubtful Sound.

The journey to Doubtful Sound is an adventure in itself where, through expert commentary, you can learn all about the history and geography of this unique area.

cruising doubtful sound in new zealand

There are dozens of smaller islands in Doubtful Sound along with several large waterfalls including Helena and Browne Falls. With over 200 days of rain a year, the steep hills surrounding the fiord are lush and green all year round, making for spectacular scenery at every turn.

Highlights of a Doubtful Sound Cruise

Cruising Doubtful Sound is a full day adventure, lasting 7 hours from the time you depart until the time you return to Manapouri, excluding driving time from Queenstown or Te Anau.

After checking in at the Real NZ desk located in the Manapouri Visitors Centre, you’ll board a boat for a 45-minute cruise across the picturesque Lake Manapouri to West Arm.

Fascinating History

On the way, the captain will share the fascinating history and geography of the area. Including why Doubtful Sound has rounded islands compared to the pointy peaks of Milford Sound and how Blunter Island reflects the direction the glacier was travelling.

Stunning Scenery

Once you arrive at West Arm you’ll be transferred to a bus (coach) for a 40-minute drive over Wilmot Pass, New Zealand’s most expensive road, to Deep Cove. On the way you’ll have a pit stop to see waterfalls and take in the beautiful Fiordland rainforest with Doubtful Sound shimmering below.

From Deep Cove you’ll board the Patea Explorer (or similar vessel) for a 3-hour cruise through Doubtful Sound. Throughout the journey, an expert nature guide will point out significant landmarks and tell you about the unique flora and fauna of the area.

View of a sound from above surrounded by mountains with green foliage in the foreground

Wildlife Encounters

The nature guides will also keep an eye out for wildlife and let you know if there are any sightings. During our cruise we were thrilled to see albatross and other birdlife, fur seals climbing up rocks and bottlenose dolphins on two different occasions! Although wildlife encounters are impossible to guarantee, chances are much higher in the quieter and more remote Doubtful Sound.

The Sound of Silence

You’ll explore different parts of the fiord and if the conditions are right you’ll enter a picturesque cove, probably one of the most naturally beautiful places I’ve ever seen, where you’ll get to experience the ‘sound of silence’.

Everyone finds a spot along the railing, puts their cameras and cellphones away and closes their eyes. The captain shuts down the boat’s engine for a couple of minutes and you are left with only the sounds of nature in its purest form. It’s a profoundly beautiful moment.

Doubtful Sound cruise

After your Doubtful Sound cruise is complete you’ll arrive back to Deep Cove and follow the same bus and boat journey back to Manapouri.

Doubtful Sound is such a remote and beautiful part of the world and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many. You may like to extend your stay in Doubtful Sound with an overnight cruise.

Tips for Cruising Doubtful Sound

  • If travelling from Queenstown, be sure to leave plenty of extra time in case of traffic but also to experience some of the scenic stops along the way .
  • A reasonable level of mobility is required given the remote access and multiple modes of transport required to get to Doubtful Sound.
  • Wear comfortable non-slip shoes.
  • Bring warm layers and a waterproof jacket . It gets very cold in Doubtful Sound, even in summer.
  • Light snacks and drinks are available to purchase onboard, however we recommend bringing a packed lunch.

The MV Southern Secret

Southern secret history ..

The Southern Secret was built near Picton and launched in 2004. It was then put to work in the Bay of Islands as a charter vessel. Our company, Fiordland Cruises, purchased the Southern Secret in 2007. It was brought south to Bluff, where it undertook extensive upgrades to become the comfortable vessel it is today.

Safe Ship Management .

In New Zealand, commercial vessels must operate under the Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS) to ensure that the ship operates safely and within its limits to help protect the crew, vessel, and the environment. This ensures that the operators are responsible for planning, improving and learning to avoid Maritime Disasters.

Biennial Survey .

The Southern Secret undertakes a Maritime survey every two years to ensure everything is shipshape. The vessel will travel from Doubtful Sound to Bluff along the rugged southwest coast to undertake its survey. While in Bluff, we also take the opportunity to pull everything apart for maintenance and upgrades.

The coffee and refreshments station is in the dining area and available for guests anytime. There is a guest refrigerator and freezer available for refreshments.

Outside viewing is available from the decks at the bow and stern of the vessel. You can walk around the outside of the main cabin to access these areas safely.
