For students looking to work and travel this summer, consider these six job opportunities! Plus, read on for tips on managing your finances while traveling.

How common is it to work as a college student? According to the US Department of Commerce, 43% of full-time undergraduates worked while enrolled in school during 2018. But if you don’t want to work while attending classes, having a summer job could be a great alternative. These jobs don’t typically interfere with your school schedule, and many of them offer different travel opportunities. If you want a summer job and like to travel, here are some employment options to keep in mind.

Do you like kids? If so, you might find a position as an au pair appealing. Au pairs are typically live-in caretakers who are assigned to a family abroad to help care for their children. In exchange, they often receive free lodging and meals as well as free days and pocket money. Au pair opportunities can be found through sites like AuPair.com .

2. English teacher

Wondering what to do as an English major ? Teach English! You don’t actually have to be an English major to teach English, but it doesn’t hurt. There are loads of opportunities to teach English worldwide, including in Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. Teaching English is also a great way to connect with people from other cultures. For helpful resources, check out TEFL.org .

3. Cruise ship staff

Cruise ships are like small, floating cities that travel from port to port, and they require plenty of workers to keep everything running smoothly. If you’re interested in seeing different parts of the world and having a unique experience, the cruise life might make sense for you. Find positions on job boards such as All Cruise Jobs , or visit specific cruise line sites, including Carnival and Disney Cruise Line .

4. Government paid internships

Not every summer job involving travel has to take you outside the country. Potential opportunities could include working with the National Parks Service, Department of Commerce, and more. You might even be able to turn your internship into a job if it’s something you want to pursue after graduation. If you’re interested in a paid internship with one of the many branches of the US government, search for positions on USAJobs.gov .

5. Camp counselor

Camps are often an opportunity for kids of all ages to learn skills, make new friends, and have loads of fun during summer vacation. But these camps don’t function on their own—you need a small army of employees to manage activities, teach classes, and prepare meals. For help finding summer camp jobs, check out the American Camp Association .

6. Alarm technician

Not many summer jobs offer opportunities to make tens of thousands of dollars in just three to four months, but companies such as Vivint employ hundreds of students every summer for door-to-door sales where you can make this and more. Positions are often available in different areas of the country, including cities such as New York, Dallas, and Las Vegas. If you want to avoid knocking on doors, consider being an installation technician instead. You’ll likely have long days and hours (you might be on call six days a week), but you’ll have the opportunity to explore a new city and make some cash.

Tips for handling your money while traveling

Traveling can bring up different financial situations and worries you may not be used to. If you plan to take a summer job that involves traveling, consider these tips to be financially prepared:

  • Use travel credit cards. Does your credit card work in other countries? Do you have to pay a fee to make foreign purchases? The best travel credit cards typically come with no foreign transaction fees, and many of them will function in most countries worldwide.
  • Have a debit card with no international ATM fees. Does your bank have fees for making withdrawals in foreign locations? Choose a bank with no international ATM fees to help reduce your potential costs while traveling.
  • Use online banks. It’s possible your bank might not have in-person branches in another country or state, but an online bank can typically help you manage your money from anywhere.
  • Save up money with a side hustle. Costs for food, lodging, activities, utilities, transportation, and more need to be considered for a travel-related summer job. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make extra money during the school year so you can pad your bank account before you travel.
  • Research job opportunities. Not every summer job will offer the same pay, experience, or included perks. If you want to find a job that suits you, take advantage of all the job search resources out there. Internet job boards are your friend, but also consider directly reaching out to companies you’re interested in.

Working while you’re in school is common, but not all jobs have to be done while you’re taking classes. Certain summer jobs offer opportunities to make money and get some travel in at the same time. If you’re considering a summer job that requires a temporary relocation, remember to get your finances in order beforehand.

CollegeXpress has helped me with all aspects of applying for college. The website is extremely easy to navigate and gives access to so many resources. I was able to research all of the colleges I was interested in, find out any information I wished to know about, and keep them organized in a list. I've also been able to research scholarships and save them as resources for later. I've used many websites in my college and scholarship search, and CollegeXpress has by far been my favorite one to use.

Which countries are the best for summer jobs abroad?

Wages across Europe vary depending on the role and the country you are working in, meaning you should put time into researching how much a specific opportunity would line your pockets, alongside researching living costs of the country to make sure your wage will actually support your new lifestyle. Teaching English abroad can be a great source of income for those wanting to spend their summer abroad, especially for those who already have a TEFL certificate. Short-term summer opportunities can primarily be found at summer schools or camps, which also come with the added benefit of getting to join in with all the fun camp activities!

If you don’t feel as though teaching English is for you, hospitality work is another great paying alternative that can take you all over Europe this summer. It tends to be easier to land a job if you have some experience, and speak a little of the language of the country where you will be working, as you will need to converse with customers – you will reap the benefits in this fun, relaxed job that comes with the possibility of tips! There are numerous hospitality roles to suit your experience, and often companies hire seasonal workers in groups so you will have the chance to meet people from all over the world who share your adventure loving mindset.

Resort work around Europe is a great way to immerse yourself in the holiday vibe, as you are surrounded by holiday-makers and those working to experience new countries like you. Resorts offer a variety of summer jobs in Europe, from entertainers to cleaners to bar staff to receptionists, meaning wherever your skills lie you are sure to find a role that is the perfect fit for you. There is also the added benefit that resorts have great facilities that staff often have full access to, in beautiful locations, so a trip to the beach after work is always a possibility!

Another great option for those looking for summer jobs in Europe is to work at a summer camp, where there is the opportunity to work as a camp counsellor supervising and arranging fun activities (that you also get to participate in!) for the campers. Working at a summer camp also means that you will meet like-minded colleagues, and as food and accommodation are included as you live on-sight, you can save what you earn which can fund your travelling adventures once camp is over!

There are countless other summer jobs in Europe available, so if you want the summer of a lifetime, what are you waiting for? Check out and apply for available roles on our site and start your new adventure!

10 Remote Summer Jobs for College Students

These remote summer jobs and paid distance internships can help students build skills and pay for college.

Find a remote summer job to pay for college.

The coronavirus pandemic pushed many companies to send employees home to work remotely as safety became a top priority. As a result, many college students who typically might have landed a part-time job waiting tables or an in-person internship were left hanging last summer. But by summer 2021, experts say many companies will have become accustomed to virtual work and may offer numerous remote summer job opportunities for college students – though they add that finding work may still be a challenge due to the struggling economy. With summer just a few months away, kick off the search by exploring these 10 remote jobs and internships that can help pay college expenses.

  • Entertainment jobs

Though students interested in fields like entertainment may have struggled to find internships last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year brings new opportunities, says Grace J. Foy, associate director of the career center at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. "Last summer, the entertainment industry was hit really hard, but this summer we're seeing more internship opportunities pop up," Foy says. One example is an internship with streaming service companies like HBO, which she says are finding ways to adapt to the virtual work environment and include college students as employees.

  • Freelance work

Virtual freelance work and project-based work can offer students flexibility and money to cover small expenses like college fees , gas for commuter students, on-campus takeout food or entertainment activities. Examples of freelance work might include data entry, user experience design or online translation work. Payment can vary widely from project to project, and students could take on freelance work in addition to a part-time job during the summer .

  • Marketing and communications jobs

Two fields that experts say are particularly comfortable with the virtual environment are marketing and communications . Students hoping to have a career in these fields can get involved through remote summer employment and internships. These jobs might involve virtual meetings, email and newsletter distribution, content creation and writing news releases – all of which can be done from the comfort of home.

  • Research jobs

Research can involve working with data sets that are available online. This work can sometimes be performed by entry-level workers, making these positions perfect for students seeking a virtual summer job. Whether it's scientific research under a college professor or competitor research for a large corporation, students in these jobs can learn and earn money for college at the same time. Salaries for remote jobs often depend on where an individual is located. CNN, for example, was recently seeking a remote research intern to collect, summarize and distribute data as well as aid the research team for CNN Español, and the job posting notes that pay is based on office location.

  • Social media opportunities

In recent years, many college students have turned to social media sites like Twitter and YouTube to cover a portion of tuition costs or to limit student loan borrowing. Companies may hire students to run their social media accounts, or students could launch their own accounts. Building a personal brand online takes time and discipline but can be lucrative and lead to new career opportunities down the road.

  • Support roles with delivery services

As COVID-19 infections surged, so did the popularity of delivery services like Amazon. The e-commerce company and its competitors offer opportunities for students that don't necessarily involve delivering goods. Remote internships in software development, marketing, finance and accounting, and quality assurance are all available at Amazon this summer. Students can also use a summer job as a launch pad into long-term work with a company, which may make them eligible for educational assistance options . Amazon, for example, covers $3,000 in tuition assistance a year up to a maximum of $12,000 for full-time employees and half that for part-time employees, provided the worker has been with the company for one year. At Amazon, the benefit is available only for two-year and certificate programs, but other companies have varying options.

  • Teaching and online tutoring

College students can be a great resource to younger students, and virtual tutoring can be an opportunity to earn money while gaining valuable experience toward a career in education. Tutoring companies, nonprofit organizations and local schools all may offer employment opportunities to qualified college students able to instruct a high school student in subjects like math, English and SAT or ACT prep . Due to COVID-19, there may also be virtual summer instruction programs for younger students in 2021 that need remote teachers to help create curriculum and lead instruction.

  • Telemedicine support work

There may be more opportunities now than ever in the fields of medicine and public health for college students studying such subjects to get involved and make a difference. The use of telemedicine and similar options for virtual medical appointments has soared in the last year. Kristen Gallo, executive director of the career center at Temple University in Pennsylvania, says doctor offices and medical centers may be seeking remote help to coordinate scheduling and other logistics around virtual visits.

  • Virtual event planning

Webinars, virtual conferences and even online weddings have become popular since the coronavirus made in-person gatherings a safety risk. These events require significant preparation and logistical management. College students can get involved in the planning and execution of virtual events from anywhere. Jobs or internships with a nearby event planner could even lead to scholarships to pay for college , as many smaller local or regional companies offer awards to employees that aren't advertised publicly.

  • Virtual internships

Many of the typical internships college students pursue have been turned into online internships in the wake of COVID-19. Though there may be fewer internships available overall, Gallo says, "there's more hope with the vaccine development and that starting to roll out. We're hearing from employers that they're more comfortable with the online format now. Some employers are even expanding hiring. They've figured it out, and found a system that works for them."

travel summer jobs for college students

Summer jobs for college students have certainly come a long way. In the digital era, you have far more options than flipping burgers or lifeguarding at the local pool. Still, it can be a struggle to find a job. Where do you start?

To help you spend less time looking for a job (and more time earning that sweet cash), we’ve put together this guide to summer jobs for college students.

Below, we break down the six main types of summer jobs available to you. While by no means an exhaustive list, it should help you direct your search.

On-Campus Jobs

If there’s something that has to happen to keep the college running during the summer, there’s potentially a job for you.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Maintenance – Somebody has to repair all the crap that students break during the semester, as well as fix any other problems that arise.
  • Foodservice – Even though there are fewer people on campus during the summer, those who remain still have to eat.
  • Campus tour guide – Alumni, prospective students, and other visitors still need tours during the summer.
  • Security – While campuses tend to be a bit calmer during the summer, someone still has to keep people safe. Just be prepared to work the night shift or other odd hours.
  • Research/lab assistant – Professors’ work doesn’t stop during the summer, and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of research and lab assistants. As a bonus, the pay for these positions tends to be a bit higher than other campus jobs.

How to apply: Your college’s website will have a job board showing open positions, as well as instructions for applying. Be sure to apply as early as possible, as summer jobs on campus can go fast!

Other things to note:

  • On-campus jobs will require you to live on or near campus. Be sure to look into the nature and cost of housing arrangements before taking a summer position.
  • Some jobs may not last the entire summer. When I did a research assistantship, for example, I was only on campus for eight weeks.

Off-Campus Jobs (Hourly and Seasonal)

Don’t relish the prospect of spending your summer on campus? Then consider looking for a job elsewhere.

Of all the categories in this article, these are the types of jobs people are most familiar with. So I won’t spend too much time on them. But don’t rule them out just because they aren’t as sexy or prestigious as other options.

  • Lifeguard – A vital service for the safe operation of beaches, pools, and aquatic facilities. You’ll need to complete some training first, so be sure to plan accordingly.
  • Landscaping – A friend of mine spent the summers working for his parents’ landscaping company. It’s hard work, but you can learn some useful skills in the process.
  • Retail – While it’s no one’s dream job, retail positions are abundant and can teach you valuable interpersonal skills.
  • Serving – Though it’s a demanding job, it’s possible to make solid money if you work at the right restaurant.
  • Mover – Want a summer job that keeps you ridiculously fit? This is your ticket.

How to apply: This will vary based on the job, but typically you’ll apply through the company’s website. Smaller, local businesses may still have paper applications (or no application).

  • If you plan to take summer classes (online or in-person), be sure the job can work with your schedule.

Gig Economy Jobs

If you want a job with lots of flexibility, then you should look into one of the many gig work apps that now exist. These apps let you sign in and pick up work whenever you want. So, at least in theory, you can scale the amount of work you do to fit your schedule.

Here are some of the main gig economy jobs available:

  • Rideshare – If your city has Uber or Lyft, you can make money driving people around. Note that you need to be 21, and consider that you’ll be putting a lot of miles on your vehicle.
  • Restaurant delivery – Whether DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Grubhub, your city probably has some kind of food delivery app. In larger cities, you may even be able to deliver on a bike or scooter.
  • Grocery shopping/delivery – Grocery delivery apps like Instacart need people to shop for and deliver groceries. Could you be one of them?
  • Dog walker/pet sitter – Apps like Rover give you the chance to earn money while hanging out with animals. Just be aware that this is one of the more competitive gig economy jobs (for obvious reasons).

How to apply: The application process will vary depending on the gig. But the best place to start is the app/website of the company you want to work for.

  • Tips will typically make up a large percentage of your earnings, so your income can fluctuate.
  • These apps hire people as independent contractors. This means you’re responsible for paying taxes on any money you earn doing the gig. Be sure to put money aside for this each month, or else you could end up with a hefty bill when you file.

Online Jobs

These days, you don’t have to limit yourself to jobs available where you live. The internet makes it possible to do certain types of work just about anywhere.

And while you might imagine you need a college degree to get these jobs, that’s far from the case. For many of these jobs, all you need are the right skills and an internet connection.

Here are a few summer jobs you can do from the air-conditioned comfort of your home:

  • Audio transcription – If you have patience and a good ear, you can earn money turning audio into text for a service like Rev .
  • Teaching English (or another language) – If you speak English (or another language) fluently, there are opportunities to make money teaching it through services like VIPKID and iTalki .
  • Virtual assistant – If you’re organized and digitally literate, then you could make a great virtual assistant. It’s like being a personal assistant, except you perform all your duties online. You can either work freelance or through an agency. We recommend taking this course if you’re serious.

How to apply: Depending on the job, you may need to pass some kind of test demonstrating your skills. You’ll find the relevant application info on the company’s website.

  • All the online jobs we discuss aren’t limited to the summer. So they could be the beginning of an ongoing, part-time job that extends through the semester.
  • For even more online jobs for college students, check out this article .

Entrepreneurial Pursuits

If a conventional job isn’t your style, consider making your own work. There are all kinds of services you can offer to the people in your community and online. And many of them require nothing more than a willingness to work hard.

Here are just a few ideas:

  • Cleaning – Whether it’s the inside of a house or the outside of a car, people will pay for cleaning services.
  • Babysitting/nannying – Demand for childcare increases in summer with kids being out of school. And if you’re trustworthy and good with kids, this is an opportunity to profit.
  • Tutoring – If you prefer to work with older children and have the requisite knowledge, tutoring can be a great source of summertime income.
  • Lawn and yard work – From mowing lawns to picking up dog poop, there’s always someone looking for help keeping their property clean and beautiful.
  • Online freelance work – Writing, graphic design, and video editing are just a few of the ways you can make money freelancing over the summer. Learn how to get started in this article .

How to apply: Since you’re starting your own business, it’s up to you to find customers. We recommend starting with people you (or your parents) know. Even if they don’t need your services, they might know someone who does.

  • Starting a business involves the risk of making no money or even losing money. So if you’re looking for a guaranteed income, this won’t be the type of job for you.
  • Don’t cut your toe off with a lawnmower or fall off a roof. Be sure the work you’re doing is safe, legal, and within your abilities.

Paid Internships

I’ve saved the most coveted type of summer job for last: the paid internship . These positions let you earn money while gaining valuable work experience and building your professional network.

Of course, paid internships in particular are highly competitive. And you’ll need to start the search process up to a year in advance. So if you’re just coming across this article as the spring semester has ended, it’s probably too late.

But if you want to start preparing for next year’s summer internship season, here are some resources that can help:

  • How to Write a Resume
  • How to Write a Cover Letter
  • How to Get an Internship (and Stand Out from the Competition)

If nothing else, remember this: it’s never too early to start looking for an internship.

Don’t Spend Your Summer Job-Less

I hope this article has shown you just how many different summer jobs are available to you as a college student.

But beyond that, remember that just reading about jobs won’t get you one. You have to get out there and apply!

Spending the summer on campus? Here’s the survival guide you need .

Blog Graphic - Summer Activities for College Applications

Summer Activities That Stand Out on College Applications

The summer before senior year is the perfect time for your child to pursue meaningful activities that will set them apart while applying for colleges. From volunteer opportunities to summer jobs, there are a variety of summer activities that can help your student stand out.

Activities that demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, or a commitment to community look great on college applications. They can also help students win prestigious merit-based scholarships.

At BASIS Charter Schools, we have a strong track record of preparing students for success in college and beyond. 100% of our graduates are accepted to a four-year college or university, and our average graduate earns over $100,000 in merit scholarships. Here are our top summer activity suggestions for high school students.

Work a summer job

Getting a part-time job is one of the best things high schoolers can do to boost their college application. Jobs build responsibility, time management skills, teamwork and a strong work ethic. These are all qualities an admissions counselor might look for while reviewing applications.

Volunteer at a nonprofit

By volunteering with local nonprofits, your student can show college admissions teams that they are passionate about bettering their community. All volunteer positions tend to look good on college applications—whether it’s helping out at an animal shelter or participating in an environmental cleanup effort. If possible, encourage your student to volunteer with organizations that align with their interests or career goals.

Intern or job shadow

Through internships or job shadowing experiences, students can gain practical skills and network with professionals. Internships in industries related to your student’s desired major are especially beneficial. Your student will gain valuable insights into potential career paths and show colleges they are proactive about career exploration.

Sign up for an academic program

Did you know some colleges offer summer programs for current high school students? This can be a great way for students to continue learning over summer break while becoming more familiar with the college experience. Alternatively, try an online course that explores a specific topic. Platforms like Coursera, edX and Khan Academy have a variety of courses geared towards high school students.

Join a sports team

Sports are a great extracurricular activity for college applications, since it shows teamwork, discipline and resilience. There are also plenty of opportunities for student athletes to take on leadership roles. Check with local community centers and recreation departments to see what types of sports programs are offered during the summer.

Prep for college admission exams

While admissions exams like the SAT and ACT are not required at every college, they can still be a deciding factor in admissions. If your student hasn’t taken these exams yet—or if they want to retest in the fall to improve their score—summer is an excellent time to study and prepare. Strong exam scores can show that your student is ready for college-level work. Consider taking a test prep course, using free online resources, or working with a tutor.

Pursue a creative project

What is your student passionate about? Summer break can be a great opportunity for high school students to pursue their passions and grow their skillset. If your student loves writing, encourage them to start a blog. If they’re an artist, suggest creating new drawings or paintings that can be added to a portfolio when college application season rolls around. Is your child more interested in STEM? They can use their coding skills to create their own website or app. These types of personal projects showcase creativity and dedication.

Explore new cultures through travel

Traveling can broaden your student’s perspective and increase their cultural awareness. Study abroad programs are a great choice for high school students looking to boost their college applications, but they can be costly and competitive. As an alternative, look for ways to make your summer family vacation a little more educational. If you’re taking a trip to the beach town, can you visit a museum or a local cultural festival when you’re there? These experiences will be great things for your student to write about in their college application essays.

travel summer jobs for college students

Summer jobs: What opportunities are out there for students?

B ECKLEY (WVNS) – A lot of students are looking to get work experience during their time off school this summer. Many local businesses are offering positions for students to make a little money and prepare for the workforce after high school.

Schools are letting out and some students are looking for something to keep them busy over the summer.

Some high school students are preparing to start college and pay for their tuition while some college students are looking for ways to earn extra money.

59News stopped by Elevation Sports in Beckley and found out a lot of WVU Tech students work there.

Mark Hitchcock, Manager at Elevation Sports, said his business is a local hotspot for college students who are looking for work.

“We have a few of the West Virginia University Tech students. I got really lucky with those students. They’re usually very smart individuals and they got a good work ethic about them. It’s close, it’s convenient, they could utilize the extra money. We’re pretty easy to work for. I try to hire the ones that ski, skateboard, and kayak,” said Hitchcock.

After talking to Mark, 59News wanted to find a business who mainly looks to employee high school students over the summer.

59News also checked out a place where you can make a little extra dough.

Eddie Lilley, General Manager of Papa Johns Pizza in Beckley, said he can help prepare high school students for life after high school.

“Students are looking for good structure, a good atmosphere, a fun place to work…but also have good structure and accountability. Those are the things I’m going to provide for you. I’m gonna teach you leadership traits and principles, things like that. Accountability, teamwork…things that come with actually working and enjoying what you are doing because when you walk through the door, what kind of atmosphere are you gonna walk into? Do you enjoy walking through those doors or do you hate walking through those doors,” said Lilley to 59News.

Do you need to take the SPEC (Spoken Proficiency of English for the Classroom)?

All students for whom English is not a first language (as self-reported on their admissions application) and who have first-time appointments as graduate teaching assistants (TAs) are required to go through a testing process to assess their effectiveness in speaking English before they are assigned assistantship responsibilities. Beginning in Fall 2024, there will be a new test to assess communication in English in a classroom context called SPEC (Spoken Proficiency of English in the Classroom).  This is replacing ESPA and ELPT.  Details will be coming soon.

Any graduate student who is included in the following categories needs to have their oral English proficiency tested by the TAPE Program:

  • Students whose first language is not English (i.e., learned another language first) as self-reported on their admissions application, and
  • Have been appointed as a Teaching Assistant

Exemptions (may change):

  • Students with an official valid (within the last two years) iBT Listening score of 25 and an iBT Speaking score of 26.
  • Undergraduate degrees and/or
  • Continuous attendance of English-language schools since the age of 12 (or younger)
  • Students who served as teaching assistants at other institutions of higher learning in which the language of instruction is English, if they were listed as the instructor of record for a course or led a discussion section in English for at least one year, with a year defined as either two academic semesters or three academic quarters.
  • Requests for exceptions regarding the SPEC  can be submitted for evaluation to a committee consisting of the Director of ESL Programs, the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs in the Graduate College, and a representative from University Human Resources.

Requests for exemption and exceptions must come from the department by the deadline, not the student.   Deadlines to register students for the SPEC are:

  • March 1

NOT Exemptions:

  • Students who come from a country where English is one of the official languages.
  • Students who are U.S. permanent residents or U.S. citizens whose first language is not English.

Testing Procedures & Results

 To be announced soon!

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

travel summer jobs for college students

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
