Department of Tourism – Western Visayas Regional Office

It is recommended that all tourist visit the office and ask for brochures about Iloilo and the rest of the Provinces and Cities in Western Visayas. Who knows, you might even find an attraction unknown to you that’s just around the corner.

For inquiries, tourists or researchers can just walk in and ask the tourism officers for the information you will or night need. Ilonggos are known for their hospitality so rest assured, you will be accommodated well with whatever questions you might want to ask.

Hello Mr. Edwin Trompeta, We are a group of mountain bike enthusiasts from Manila who would like to visit/tour Panay island by bike. Do you have information on where to stay/eat, rates and places of interest? Our interest came from reading the account of a 1 week tour of a cyclist who biked all over the island in 2000 and recommended it highly. We are thinking of going ahead with the tour in the summer of 2010. Hoping to hear from you soon to finalize our plans, we also wish your success. Thank you very much. Leo Katigbak

DOT-REGION 6 DELIVERS FILIPINO BRAND OF SERVICE IN CRISIS

department of tourism western visayas

The Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Office 6 (DOT-RO 6) has assisted 1,284 tourists who remained in Boracay island and other Western Visayas areas due to travel restrictions following President Duterte’s March 12 announcement of the nationwide state of public health emergency.

The DOT-RO6, headed by regional director Atty. Helen J. Catalbas, contacted and facilitated their transfer via specially-arranged sweeper flights to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Clark International Airport (CIA) or the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) for their connecting flights to their respective home countries.

Assuring the region’s guests of the Filipino brand of service, Director Catalbas said at least 873 of the tourists assisted were those stranded in Boracay, among them 95 Filipino balikbayans and outbound Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

The rest of those assisted were international and domestic tourists visiting or vacationing in other Western Visayas localities including the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras, Bacolod, Antique, Capiz, Negros Occidental, and the premier cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.

DOT-6 welcomes new regional director

Department of Tourism Region 6 director Crisanta Marlene P. Rodriguez says tourism, if done correctly, is an effective way to protect the environment.

ILOILO City – The Department of Tourism (DOT) in Western Visayas has a new director – Crisanta Marlene P. Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has over 16 years of experience in development work in the Philippines, partnering and working with upland and coastal communities in developing sustainable livelihood and protecting the environment.

Prior to her appointment at DOT Region 6, she was the director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Biodiversity Management Bureau from 2018 to 2019.

She also served as regional executive director of DENR Region 9 where she received the JCI Philippines Western Mindanao’s Pinay Power Award 2020 for her “exemplary dedication to serve beyond the boundaries of her position” (JCI Yllana, 2020).

“Our aim is to boost tourism revenues for Region 6, highlighting the heritage, culture, arts, and experiences in the provinces, towns and cities. One of my initial plans as the regional director is to solidify the partnership among the DOT, local government units and stakeholders,” Rodriguez said

The new DOT-6 director also hopes to build community-based tourism in the region to empower local communities, improve their skills and bring about a sense of ownership by local community members leading to development in their localities. The Department of Tourism (DOT) said there is a need to “ramp up” tourism promotions in Western Visayas now that Negros Occidental and Bacolod City have left the region following the creation of the Negros Island Region (NIR).

“(We) will also be encouraging our LGUs (local government units) to discover more destinations. They can have exploratory assessments of destinations, which we can develop as a tourist destination,” DOT regional director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez said in an interview on Thursday.

Rodriguez said she was saddened by the separation as the province and city have “very unique tourism offerings.”

“They are also very big on nature, which I believe our Western markets are very attracted to. Also, culture and food that is unique to them,” she said.

Citing data, Rodriguez said Negros Occidental and Bacolod City have over 1.4 million combined tourist arrivals in 2023 out of the 5.3 million total arrivals in Western Visayas.

Nonetheless, she said that historically and culturally, they could not be separated from Panay, especially the food and culture.

Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental are part of the sugar trail that DOT is trying to develop as a destination.

Three of the four-venue International Open Water Swim Circuit: Experience Western Visayas that kicked off in Negros Occidental in February this year are in Panay and Guimaras.

The swim circuit aimed to establish Western Visayas as a leading destination for sports and ecotourism.

“They cannot be separated totally, except that in terms of boundaries, there’s already the Negros Island Region. So we are waiting for the drafting of the NIR; the office of DOT will support every tourism program they will initiate,” Rodriguez said.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez said DOT has already communicated with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines the requests of LGUs in Iloilo for the resumption of international flights at the Iloilo International Airport to Hong Kong and Singapore.

But there is also a need to ensure there is a demand from these countries to resume such flights, she said.

“So we’re trying to work that out. We hope to get demand from those coming from other countries as well, not only the demand of Filipinos,” she said. (PNA)

In celebration of its 126th founding anniversary, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Western Visayas has proudly inaugurated Sunset Boulevard in Iloilo City.

This new 4.9-kilometer road stretches from Barangay Tabucan Mandurriao to Cagbang, Oton, and extends to Abilay Sur, Oton, promising to be a fresh and eco-friendly destination for residents and visitors alike.

The soft opening was marked by a lively fun walk with DPWH employees. Former Senate President Franklin Drilon was also in attendance. The Ilonggo senator was credited for playing a pivotal role in the project’s inception.

The boulevard, now open to the public, offers a serene environment for those seeking a breath of fresh air and a green escape in the city.

According to DPWH Western Visayas Director Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel, the opening of Sunset Boulevard is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the area while boosting tourism, economic growth, and infrastructure development.

He emphasized that this project aligns with the vision of a brighter and more sustainable future for Iloilo residents.

“This boulevard not only eases traffic, but also enhances the connectivity and economic potential of the region,” said Oropel. “It’s a step towards a more sustainable and vibrant Iloilo.”

Drilon lauded the DPWH for successfully bringing the project to fruition, underscoring its benefits for the local community.

“This is a milestone for Iloilo, providing a scenic route that will benefit many Ilonggos and foster economic development,” he said.

The environmental benefits of Sunset Boulevard were also highlighted, with the project supporting Iloilo’s greener initiatives. It promises to be a significant addition to the city’s efforts to promote eco-friendly and sustainable practices.

The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures including Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., Uswag Ilonggo party-list Rep. James Ang, and other local officials, all expressing their support for the project and its potential to transform the region.

La Castellana mayor urges national gov’t to help in relocating Mount Kanlaon danger zone residents

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – La Castellana Mayor Rhummyla Mangilimutan urged the national government to intervene in the relocation of individuals residing within Mount Kanlaon’s four-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Mangilimutan said approximately 100 households were in the risk zone. The town’s limited resources, meanwhile, make it impossible to address issues promptly.  She appealed to the national government to assist them in finding permanent relocation sites for residents prohibited from returning to their homes within the range of the danger zone prescribed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Mangilimutan’s call for help comes after the Office of the Civil Defense in Western Visayas prohibited residents from returning to homes within Kanlaon’s danger zones .

Based on the assessment of the OCD-6, the volcano’s danger zone includes a portion of La Carlota town, the City of Bago, and the municipalities of Murcia and La Castellana in Negros Occidental and the City of Canlaon in Negros Oriental.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head John de Asis said around 1,815 evacuees were given the green light to go home since Thursday, June 20, leaving less than a thousand in three evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has distributed a total of P26.02 million worth of assistance to all the affected families, including P15.98 million of financial aid to more than 8,000 families and P4.7 million worth of food packs to more than 1500 beneficiaries.

As of June 23 , Kanlaon volcano remains at alert level 2 with three recorded volcanic quakes, emitting 3,431 tons of sulfur dioxide.

It can be recalled that the Kanlaon’s eruption on June 3 was phreatic in nature, which emitted a voluminous and incandescent plume that rapidly rose to 5,000 meters or 5 kilometers.

The eruption did not just displace thousands of people, but also affected hectares of agricultural land, led to the contamination of food and water sources , and crippled operations of known tourism destinations .

Negros Occidental Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) chief Joan Nathaniel Gerangay earlier said they hoped for a torrential downpour to rid the water sources of sulfur contamination, making it safer for human consumption.

Various groups have donated food and non-food goods to affected families in the town, including the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) and the Negros Economic Development Foundation (NEDF).

MBCCI and NEDF launched their Opland Tabang to help families and individuals affected by the calamity. They distributed food, clothing, linens, and hygiene kits to evacuees at St. Vincent’s High School and La Castellana Senior High School. – Rappler.com

New DOT director in Western Visayas vows to boost tourism revenues

department of tourism western visayas

ILOILO CITY – Newly appointed Department of Tourism (DOT)-Region 6 Director Crisanta "Krisma" Marlene P. Rodriguez vowed to boost tourism revenues in Western Visayas as the pandemic wanes.

“Our aim is to boost tourism revenues highlighting the heritage, culture, arts, and experiences of the provinces," said Rodriguez who officially took over this week.

World-famous Boracay Island is located in Western Visayas but many other tourist destinations in the region are still struggling to bounce back from the pandemic.

Rodriguez wants to solidify partnerships among the local governments and tourism stakeholders in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces as well as the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.

Rodriguez has paid courtesy calls on Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. of Iloilo and Mayor Jerry Mayor Jerry Treñas here.

Prior to her appointment at the DOT, Rodriguez worked for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as regional director in Zamboanga and the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB).

Rodriguez is expected to bring her environmental expertise to boost a naturally sustainable tourism sector.
