Last fall, I took Field Trip Girl and Field Trip Boy on a little excursion to The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California.  They had a day off from school, so I thought we used our time wisely and explore one of Southern California’s most popular aquariums.

Founded in 1998, “the Aquarium of the Pacific is the fourth most-attended aquarium in the nation. It displays over 11,000 animals in more than 50 exhibits that represent the diversity of the Pacific Ocean.  Each year more than 1.5 million people visit the Aquarium.  Beyond its world-class animal exhibits, the Aquarium offers educational programs for people of all ages from hands-on activities to lectures by leading scientists.  Through these programs and a variety of multimedia experiences, the Aquarium provides opportunities to delve deeper into ocean science and learn more about our planet.  The Aquarium of the Pacific has redefined the modern aquarium.  It is a community gathering place where diverse cultures and the arts are celebrated and a place where important topics facing our planet and our ocean are explored by scientists, policymakers and stakeholders in the search for sustainable solutions.” ( source www.aquariumofpacific.org)

We have been to the Aquarium on numerous occasions.  We aim to go at least once a year with my good friend, Windi, whose dad is a volunteer diver at the Aquarium.

The Aquarium of the Pacific has several exhibits that teach people about the importance of protecting our ecosystem and the marine life that lives in our ocean.

IMG_5490[1]

Take a look at these giant sea bass that we saw!    When I was younger, I use to go fishing with my dad in the Delta River in Northern California, but we never caught any fish this size.  You can find these big guys located downstairs in the Aquarium where you can also watch diver demonstrations throughout the day.

IMG_5481[1]

Outside the Aquarium features outdoor exhibits like the Shark Lagoon, the Lorikeet Forest aviary, Our Watershed: The Pathway to the Pacific and the June Keyes Penguin Habitat.

At the Junes Keyes Penguid Habitat we learned that not all penguins live in a cold habitats such as the Magellanic Penguins.  Magellanic Penguins are named after the explorer Ferdinand Magellan who first saw them on a voyage in 1519.  They are from South American and found around the coast line of Chile, Argentina and the Falkland Islands.  They spend their time at sea and when they come ashore to breed they form large colonies.  They also feed on fish, squid and crustaceans and hunt in groups.

IMG_5479[1]

Field Trip Boy enjoyed the Aquarium’s Lorikeet Forest aviary the most.  This beautiful forest is a 3,200-square-foot outdoor aviary with more than 100 lively lorikeets.  Here I purchased one small cup of nectar and Field Trip Boy got to feed the birds as he walked throughout the  exhibit.  He really liked it when they landed on his arms in search of food.

IMG_5485[1]

After visiting the Lorikeet Forest, we went over to the Our Watersheds: Pathway to the Pacific exhibit.   The exhibit shares the history of local waterways and tells the story of the Southern California steelhead fish species and its importance in the local ecosystem.

IMG_5477[1]

However, if you play in the watershed just be prepared to get wet like Field Trip Girl did!

IMG_5476[1]

My favorite of course was the Shark Lagoon where they have more than 150 sharks.   Through the viewing window we came nose-to-nose with sand tiger, zebra, and whitetip reef sharks, as well as the freshwater sawfish.  In the touch tanks Field Trip Girl got to feel a Bamboo and epaulette shark and ray.

IMG_5474[1]

In fact, that’s what I really like the most about The Aquarium of The Pacific.  Children not only get to see the animals, but they get interact with them.   The Aquarium’s educators and volunteers who staff the touch tanks are also very friendly and willing to answer any questions that the children have.

IMG_5488[1]

Field Trips to The Aquarium of The Pacific are very reasonable.  For a traditional school group, the price is $6 per participant during the Fall and Summer months with a 10 person minimum.  In the Spring (Feb. 1 – May 20, 2015), the price is $7.50 per participant.

All school programs are led by an Aquarium educator and take place in the Boeing Learning Center, the watershed classroom, or the Ocean Theater.  To learn more visit here .

Unique for homeschoolers, the Aquarium offers specific Homeschool Days tailored just for them throughout the school year.   No other classroom-based school trips are booked on these days either!  That’s another bonus!

On Homeschool Days the Aquarium’s educators set up engaging learning stations that allow homeschoolers of all ages to experiment, investigate, and explore marine habitats and concepts.  In December, they also offer a Homeschool Holiday event. Just FYI, the 2015 Homeschool Days schedule has yet to be announced.

IMG_5487[1]

Hours of Operation: The Aquarium is open daily from 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., except for Christmas Day and during the Grand Prix of Long Beach (April 17, 18, and 19, 2015).

Amazing aquarium! Our family are happy! We have been to many aquariums in the world, but this one has very rare exhibits that we have never seen. everything is clean, beautiful, convenient locations. I especially liked the game “find various sea inhabitants and put a stamp.” At the exit the child was given a prize. Highly recommend!

It’s was fun. Only took about a hour to tour the whole place. But a lot of sea life to explore and learn about. Not sure if it’s always like this but it was very busy on a Monday and the water in the tanks was pretty dirty. There’s a bird exhibit where you can interact with the birds so if you’re into birds its a nice place to visit, overall.

user-icon

A very worth visiting an aquarium, the area is not very large, but the projects inside are very essence. The highlight is that there are many places to touch, and you can get in touch with the aquatic creatures in the sea. Starfish, sea cucumbers, I won't say this, the big one is that you can touch the devil fish, which is a project that surprises the children. There is also a bird in the bird house that is not afraid of people, and can be fed very kindly. There are not many people in the whole museum, and I am very comfortable to appreciate it~ If you park, you will take a photo on the machine at the door with a parking ticket, and you will only charge 8 yuan.

user-icon

The place is not big, suitable for children

user-icon

The attractions are very interesting and the children like it very much. In addition, the scenery outside the aquarium is particularly beautiful and it is worth walking more.

Small but a good place to visit for fun!

Overall it is really amazing.

Stroll along almost any local beach during low tide and you’ll see that the shore is alive! Not only can you discover Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals — you may also encounter Seattle Aquarium beach naturalists: advocates for the living wonders on our shorelines who are eager to share their knowledge.

The Beach Naturalist program runs on low-tide days throughout the summer and on select winter evenings. The amazing people who operate it are local residents who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 200 people have volunteered to help community members learn about and enjoy our shorelines.

Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you explore gently to keep animals and their homes safe; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. Scroll down to see our low-tide programming for 2024!

Ask a beach naturalist! Need help identifying something? Email a photo to [email protected] and a beach naturalist will respond to you as soon as we can.

Students on field trips to the local theater and a fire station.

Field trips are a quintessential school experience. You usually only get one or two a year so it’s important to do it right! Our roundups of unique field trip ideas have something for every age, subject, and interest. We’ve even got resources like permission slip forms and chaperone tips. Get ready to leave the classroom behind to take learning on the road!

Preschool Field Trip Ideas

Early-grade field trips help kids learn about the world and also teach them good field trip behavior. These are our top picks for the pre-K crowd, but many of the options on our kindergarten list are perfect for this age group too.

  • Library: Not every student’s parents take them to story time. Schedule your own trip, and show kids that having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!
  • Farm: Whether you learn how vegetables are grown or where milk and eggs come from, the farm is always a hit.
  • Grocery store: Go behind the scenes at the supermarket, and use this trip as the foundation for lessons on healthy eating.
  • Park: From local playgrounds to majestic national parks, it’s always worth getting kids into the great outdoors.
  • Children’s museum: This is the age group most children’s museums were designed for! They’ll love all the hands-on fun and excitement.
  • Post office: Learn how mail is sorted and shipped, and teach students about stamps and other mail-related items.
  • Bank: Money is a new concept for these kiddos, and they’ll be fascinated to step inside the vault and learn other bank secrets.
  • Fire station: There’s just something about a fire truck that gets every little one excited.
  • Nursing home: Is there anything sweeter than watching seniors and wee ones spend time together?
  • Animal shelter: For kids who don’t have pets at home, this can be a good introduction to animals. Others will just enjoy the time with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes.

Middle school students on a field trip to a water reclamation facility

@salinasvalleybasingsa

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.
