Week 1: May 28-31

Junior Rangers (Ages 5 - 7), Rangers (Ages 8 - 11)

Fabulous Food: Every animal has unique food needs, whether they eat leaves, bugs, fruit, other animals, or a mix of all of the above. In the Zoo, our Animal Care Teams meet the dietary needs of a wide variety of eaters. So, how do we determine what and how much to give each animal to ensure a proper diet? Campers will learn all about animal diets, while creating the ultimate Zoo banquet table to present to other campers at the end of the week!

Quest (Ages 12 - 14)

Animal Care & Conservation Specialists : Many hands make light work, and it takes an extensive array of uniquely skilled hands to care for the wide variety of living species that call Zoo Atlanta home. It takes still more hands to protect the wild counterparts of those species. Quest campers will explore some of the many specialty areas* whose work contributes to Zoo Atlanta's global advocacy for wild animals and wild places. Throughout the summer, Quest campers will engage in hands-on, minds-on activities to learn about animal care and habitats, meet some of our amazing specialists in animal care and husbandry, and build relationships with like-minded peers who hope to contribute to a world where humans and animals can flourish together.

*There is no guarantee that campers will be allowed in behind-the-scenes areas.

Week 2: June 3-7

Balancing Act: Every ecosystem, from the tiniest of tidepools to the global biosphere, is a delicate balance of factors both living and non-living. Campers will explore what makes an ecosystem, how they stay in balance, and how we as humans impact that balance in our own backyards as well as around the globe. Campers will round out the week by celebrating their group's favorite ecosystem with a living tableau to share with fellow campers!

Week 3: June 10-14

Following Footprints: All over the animal kingdom, animals rely on feet to get around. But what's in a toe? Why do some toes need to be sticky, but others need to be webbed? Campers will journey with us through the diverse world of animal feet and explore how what we do with our feet can impact the world around us. Campers will create a field guide of their favorite feet to share with friends and family!

Week 4: June 17-21

Marvelous Mimicry : Copycat isn't just a fun game to play as a kid ; it's also a great survival strategy! Explore the wonderful world of mimicry as we learn how all kinds of animals play pretend in order to stay safe in the wild! While we're at it, we'll talk about a few things that we humans have learned to mimic from our animal co-habitants to help make life easier for us. Campers will test out their mimicry skills in a talent show of monumental proportions, as we determine which of our humans gets to claim the title of most marvelous mimicry!

Week 5: June 24-June 28

Family Dynamics: As humans, we typically love to be surrounded by a community of friends, family, and neighbors. But what about animals? This week at C amp, we will explore the social dynamics of different species . Campers will learn to answer how accredited zoos group animals in their care to promote their well-being. Campers will dive into what community looks like for different species around the world , and will celebrate the C amp community by joining forces to build our very own camper habitats!

Week 6: July 1-3

Fantastic Flights: Birds come in all shapes, sizes, and colors! This week we will explore the diversity of birds around the world! Join us as we talk habitats , colors, flight, food chains, and backyard bird conservation. Then bring the family to a parade through the Zoo as your campers show off the beauty of birds!

Week 7: July 8-12

Week 8: july 15-19, week 9: july 22-26, week 10: july 29-august 2.

Safari Camp is a great opportunity to engage young explorers in learning about the wild world around them and beginning their journey of conservation stewardship. Through Zoo explorations, up-close animal encounters, STEAM-based projects, hands-on science activities, environmental games and more, campers learn about attainable strategies and goals to combat environmental issues and are charged with finding simple ways that they can make a difference.

While Zoo Atlanta is a great place to discover nature and wildlife, it is also important that campers have a chance to experience wildlife in a more naturalistic setting. Campers and their Educators may travel out to Grant Park (which surrounds the Zoo) to participate in a variety of activities such as nature walks, environmental research, and group team-building games.

Summer Under the Big Top

Circus Juventas summer camps are all about creating a safe space where students can have new adventures, experience traditional and contemporary circus arts and global inspirations, and receive encouragement in a non-competitive, nurturing environment. A one-of-a-kind summer camp experience in the Twin Cities, our week-long, daily sampler, or teen high-flying adventure day camps are led by an internationally-renowned troupe of coaches in our award-winning big top. Our camps are designed to delight, challenge, and inspire campers in new and creative ways.

Summer camps are a great way to experience the magic of circus without the year-long commitment of our regular classes. CJ coaches are committed to working individually with every student based on the students’ needs and abilities. Many of our campers return each year — and we welcome new students too.

Circus Juventas offers three types of summer camp options: Performance week-long camps, daily sampler camps, and teen high-flying adventure camps. All options provide experience of ALL genres of the circus arts: aerial, acrobatics, balance, juggling, and theater. All camps run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and are for ages 6-18. Students are assigned groups based on age. Buddy requests are available.

Campers who voluntarily withdraw from camp before May 1 are refunded all but the deposit of $125 for week-long camps and $30 per day for sampler camps. The annual registration fee is non-refundable. Any cancellations made after May 1 are not eligible for a refund.

Come to Camp

Summer camp faq's:.

Parents of summer campers have great questions when registering for camp. We’ve curated many over the years, with the most frequently asked questions listed below. Click on the tabs to sort the questions by category. If you still have questions, feel free to call!

  • Summer Camp Daily Schedule (0)
  • Summer Camp Placement, Eligibility and Policies (0)
  • Preparing for Summer Camp (0)
  • Summer Camp General Info (0)

Week-long performance camp participants perform in an end-of-week showcase for their parents/guardians. The performance takes place at 2 p.m. on Friday. We recommend arriving early to provide time for parking. The curtain opens for seating 5-10 minutes before the show.

No. We ask that parents/guardians drop off campers no earlier than 8:45 a.m. and pick up at 3 p.m. Campers must be signed in and out every day.

All performance camps and teen camp participants will receive a t-shirt with their registration.

We recommend campers pack a day bag in which to store a lunch box, water bottle, mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks, athletic shoes, and socks. Campers should write their names on everything they pack.

We recommend campers wear comfortable clothing in which they can move (i.e.: tank tops and leggings; shorts and t-shirts; leotards, etc.), but nothing too baggy so as to hinder spotting. Long hair should be pulled back and large jewelry removed. Campers should bring close-toed shoes for some of the equipment.

Yes. Food is not provided at Circus Juventas.

Summer camp confirmation emails are sent immediately after payment is submitted and registration is complete.

Circus Juventas reserves the right to cancel a camp due to insufficient enrollment, in which case, a full refund is processed. Should you decide to voluntarily withdrawal before May 1, all but the deposit of $125.00 for week-long camps and $30.00 per day for sampler camps may be refunded. All registrations fees are non-refundable. Any cancellations made after May 1 are not eligible for a refund. Please contact our administrative team with questions: [email protected] .

No. Due to the nature of the program, we do not offer make-up opportunities.

A waitlist option is available on the registration site immediately after a camp reaches capacity.  Circus Juventas staff will notify you if a space becomes available based on the order of registration submission. Camp registrations from the wait list are closed one week prior to the start date. In previous years, there was minimal movement from the waitlist.

No. In fact, most of our campers come to camp with little to no experience (though we have many campers who return summer after summer).

The performance is meant mostly for parents/guardians, as we have limited audience space.

Yes, they can. Campers are able to request one buddy as part of the registration process. Please note: for two campers to be placed together they both need to request each other as buddies. Additionally, students who are more than 2 years apart in age may not be put into groups together in order to provide the best training for both students.

Campers get to experience a little bit of everything; from trapeze to trampoline, silks to low wire, juggling to acrobatics, our camps are designed for high-energy kids.

While campers are supervised by a handful of our full-time, international coaching staff, they spend the majority of their time with our student coaches, who train year-round at Circus Juventas in our most advanced acts. Our student coaches bring a high level of enthusiasm and professionalism to the camp environment and have a really good time training our campers.

Campers arrive between 8:45 and 9 a.m. and are signed in at the front desk. At 9 they meet with their assigned group leader for welcome activities and warm up. These groups (which remain the same for week-long campers) cycle throughout stations, with a few breaks for snacks and coach demonstrations. After lunch, weather permitting, campers have time outside in the adjoining park OR participate in a craft activity. The remaining time is devoted to circus activities (stations, etc.) until campers are picked up at 3 p.m. At 3 p.m. campers are signed out by guardians with their group leader. Week-long campers spend time later in the week preparing for Friday’s performance.

Campers as young as 6 (going into first grade in the fall) and as old as 15 can register for summer camps at Circus Juventas. Campers must have completed one full year of kindergarten (not pre-K). Our Teen Adventure Camps is for ages 13-18.

We take up to 80 campers per day/week and have a ratio of 8:1 campers to coaches.

Yes, we do. Students who have previously enrolled in classes or camps at Circus Juventas are automatically notified. For new campers to get onto this mailing list, we recommend completing the PRE-REGISTRATION process A.S.A.P.

Online registration for summer camps opens in February and remains open until one week before the camp you are registering for starts.

All CJ students are required to pay an annual, non-refundable $45 registration fee. This is the only additional cost outside of camp tuition.

We recommend paying in full at the time of registration. If a payment plan is needed, we require a nonrefundable deposit at the time of registration ($125 for week-long, $30 per day for samplers in addition to the $45 non-refundable, registration fee). All balances MUST be paid in full by May 1. Registrations received after May 1 must be paid in full at the time of registration. Scholarships are not available for summer camp.

Camps run in June and July. A camp day lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In terms of the structure of the day, there really is no difference between the two. The difference has to do mostly with scheduling and commitment of time: campers registered for a week-long performance camp commit to a full week of camp (Monday through Friday) and participate in a showcase performance for parents at the end of the week. Campers sign up for sampler camps on a pick and choose basis, so a full week commitment is not required. There is also a half-day (morning) option for the sampler camps.

SUMMER SAFARI TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Registration is available online only. Due to the popularity of this program, dates will not be held until payment is received. Registration and all forms listed in the section above MUST be on file before camper can participate. By completing the forms, you declare your child is physically and mentally able to participate in this program without parents.

This is a camp for children. Parents and chaperones are not allowed to participate and/or follow the group around the zoo. This is distracting to the group and interrupts the teaching activity for all campers.

Summer Safari is an outdoor rain or shine camp. Actual camp experiences may vary based on weather or other factors. The Metro Richmond Zoo reserves the right to cancel any Summer Safari program. Participants will be notified by phone call or email. In the event of cancellation by the Metro Richmond Zoo due to extreme weather or other factors, you may reschedule to another Summer Safari date if available or request a full refund. If guests cancel their Summer Safari date or “do not show”, a refund will not be given and rescheduling will not be available.

Circus Camp Information Guide

For Summer Camp, campers must meet both prerequisites: they must have completed kindergarten and be at least 6 years old.

Please note that only campers who are officially enrolled and registered for a specific session can attend that camp session.

It is not allowed to switch or trade campers, nor attend a session a camper is not enrolled in. The camp staff requires all necessary documents and adequate time to prepare for the camp session before its commencement. Therefore, we cannot accept walk-ins, one-day drop-ins, or campers coming instead of another. Children who do not meet these requirements cannot attend camp.

Registration Form (see below regarding late fees)

The registration form can be found in the purchase receipt and session confirmation sent to your email address, which is in your Mind Body account. After enrolling a child and paying the tuition, a purchase receipt will be emailed to you. Click the SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION FORM link to complete your form.

Registration Confirmation: After completing the form, you will receive an email containing a copy of your responses. This serves as your confirmation that the CAC has received your form. If you have received a confirmation email from Google Forms (a copy of your form responses), refrain from emailing the registrar inquiring whether the form has been received. Due to the large number of campers and high interest in the Summer camp, your email might not receive a response.

If your reg form is not received, the camp admin will email you before your session.

Late Fees: You must complete and submit the Google Registration form immediately upon enrollment. If forms are not submitted at the time of purchase/enrollment, a $50 late fee per form will be applied, and Group requests will not be considered. We reserve the right to cancel your reservation, and you will not be entitled to any refund.

TUITION COST $385 for 1 week session (2024) $ for the extended session (includes a field trip to The Summer Circus Spectacular and transportation to and from the show).

Additionally, the doors and gates of the campus and arena will be securely locked from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM every day. This measure is necessary to ensure the safety and protection of all individuals attending camp and will be enforced without exception.

Once the camp begins, all parents or guardians are required to leave the campus.

To contact the camp staff, use Remind. Review the Remind tab. Or call 941-355-9335 ex 300.

Parents, guardians, and visitors are not permitted to have lunch with campers. There are no exceptions.

No parents or visitors are allowed inside the arena during camp hours. This includes lunches and forgotten items. Pl ease drop off any necessary items at the main office located in the small brick building on the west side of the arena.

LOCATION: 2027 Bahia Vista Street, Sarasota, Florida 34239. Inside the Sailor Circus Arena.

PARKING/ DROP OFF /PICK UP: All camp parking is located in the Sarasota High School parking lot , next to the Arena (building with the Blue and White circus tent-style metal roof). Throughout the camp, camp families must use the High School parking lot for access to the arena. The arena doors will be locked during the day, so camp families will need to use REMIND to inform camp staff to open a door.

Campers should be escorted to the main arena entrance, where camp staff will check them in. Use the new entrance with the red metal awning, which is located near the parking lot exit, facing Bahia Vista Street.

Once camp begins, parents/guardians will not be allowed inside the arena. Camp is not open to spectators and is closed to the public.

Campers will be picked up from the same doors as drop-off.

The circus staff parking lot, located on the west side of the Sailor Circus Arena (the other side of the arena) near Tamiami Trail, is not available for use to camp families at any time.

VISITORS: Circus camp is not open to the public; it is a closed space. We do not allow parents or guests to spectate during camp hours or during before- and aftercare. Parents/Guardians/Visitors are not permitted to stay during camp sessions for any reason. Campers cannot have lunch with anyone outside the camp.

Need to drop off an item during camp hours? Please check the Remind Tab and park in the high school lot, not the Circus staff lot.

Directions: If you are coming from the East on Bahia Vista Street, you will see the high school parking lot before you reach the arena. If you are coming from the West, you will pass the arena and then enter the high school parking lot to park.

During the camp session, Remind serves as the primary mode of communication between families and staff.

Once your session begins all communication will be conducted through Remind. Please note that you will no longer receive any emails from the registrar once the session begins.  To contact our camp staff, kindly use Remind since there is no phone available in the area. If a phone were present, it would be difficult to hear it ring due to the exciting camp activities taking place.

Prior to the start of your camp session, the weekend before, an email will be sent by the registrar providing you with instructions on how to join Remind and the corresponding class code.

We recommend communicating with our staff through Remind, but if necessary, you can also reach Kelly at 941-355-9335, extension 300. If she’s unavailable, she may be assisting in the arena, so please use Remind to message the camp staff.

During camp hours, if you need to drop off or pick up something for your camper, or drop off late or pick up early, simply message the camp staff via Remind. They will meet you at the locked gate near the Sarasota High School parking lot to assist you.

Our mornings at circus camp start with a gentle warm-up and group stretch, followed by one or two fun activities like low wire, unicycle riding, trampolining, hula hooping, and juggling. We take a break for a snack and then focus on practicing our showcase performance. After lunch, we enjoy theater games, arts and crafts, and more rehearsal for our showcase act. We take another snack break and end the day with group games before dismissal.

On Wednesdays, we have flying trapeze day, where all campers can experience the thrill of flying high on the trapeze. On the last Friday of camp, campers can showcase their talents in a costumed performance for their families.

Two-week session includes a ticket to the Summer Circus Spectacular and transportation. All are included in your camp tuition.

SHOWCASE DETAIL

Showcase is always the last day of the session.

– The showcase for campers’ families will take place at 3:30 p.m. The doors will open at 3:15 p.m.

– After the showcase, campers will change out of their costumes, and the camp session will end.

– The camp showcase is exclusive to campers’ families and is not open to the general public.

– No aftercare will be provided on showcase days.

– Parents are welcome to take photos of campers in costume from 3:15 to 3:30. The show is expected to last approximately 45 minutes.

– Our concession stand will offer a limited summer menu and Camp merchandise for purchase. We accept cash and cards.

– After the show, campers must change out of their costumes.

– All C costumes and accessories, including hair pieces, are the property of the CAC and may not leave the campus.

– Campers will be dismissed immediately after they change out of their costumes.

– Female campers must wear skin-colored tights on the last day of the camp session for the showcase. Please drop the tights off on Friday morning with the camper. Parents will not have access to the campus to drop off tights throughout the day. More information is on the Attire Tab.

– The showcase always takes place on the last day of the session.

The CAC costume team does an excellent job creating costumes for each session. Each act will have a custom costume designed according to the session’s theme.

All costumes are washed with Tide laundry detergent after each performance . If your child has a Tide sensitivity or allergy, please let us know.

ALL costumes, accessories, and hairpieces are the property of the CAC and are not permitted to leave the campus.

The campers are divided into two (2) groups: a home group and an act group. During the day, they spend time in both groups.

Home Group: Our camp organizes campers into home groups according to their age. Each group is led by one counselor and two to three junior counselors. We assign campers to their home group (by age) before camp begins, and they cannot be rearranged for any reason. Home groups typically consist of 10-12 campers.

Showcase Act Group: Campers will be placed in an act group that matches their interests and abilities. The groups will include campers of all ages and will be led by a counselor. This counselor may or may not be the same as the camper’s home group counselor. The act group assignments will be given to campers at the end of the first day.

Group Requests

We understand that you may prefer your camper to be placed in a particular group, but we cannot guarantee that we can fulfill every request. Our team will do their best to accommodate your preferences, but please remember that it may not always be feasible. We strive to group campers with their friends, but our process may not always permit it. If your child is not assigned to their friend’s group, we apologize, but we cannot honor requests to switch groups due to the high number of campers we have each week; it would be impossible to make changes for everyone.

During the day, all the campers gather together in the arena, which is a vast open area. This means your camper will still be near his or her friends even if your requests cannot be fulfilled.

Registration Forms not completed at the time of purchase/enrollment will be considered late. Unfortunately, we cannot grant group requests for late forms.

The waitlist option becomes available only once a session is full and must be reserved via Mind Body. You can join the waitlist by clicking on the “Register Here” button provided in step #1 above. If you are reserving spots for multiple campers, add each camper’s name separately to the waitlist.

In case a spot becomes available, you will be notified via email by [email protected]. You will then have 24 hours to respond and confirm. If you fail to respond within 24 hours, the spot will be offered to the next person in line. Your child’s camp spot is reserved once you receive a confirmation email after payment from Mind Body for that session and CAC staff.

Please note that waitlist notifications will be sent out in the order of reservations received.

No spots will be offered for the upcoming camp session after Thursday of the preceding week.

It is possible to request a change of session, but only if there is availability in the desired session. The request must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of the new session.

Please note that a $25 fee will be charged for any reservation changes, regardless of when the request is made. This fee is necessary because the administrator must make changes in multiple areas to accommodate the request.

Each year our research team works with teachers and curriculum developers to design engaging themes and activities, and 2024 is no different!

Little campers (TK – 6th grade) will conquer trials on their journey to become Jedi knights, they will excavate fossils, experiment with fizzy concoctions, build with skill and imagination, get dirty & artsy, and enjoy dressing up to save the day! With Safari Kid Summer Camp, you don’t have to choose just one path to fun! And that’s just a small taste of the excitement—check out all of our riveting themes and activities planned for 2024 below!

Summer camps with Safari Kid

TK – 2nd Grade

Transitional Kindergarten through second-grade campers will celebrate summer through a series of themes. Each theme is designed to engage young minds in learning, creativity, and fun.

Week 1: Jedi Knight Training

Every Padawan must train under a Jedi Master in order to conquer tests called ‘The Jedi Trials’ before becoming knighted a Jedi. The Jedi Trials consist of five different tests: the Trial of Skill, Trial of Courage, Trial of Flesh, the Trial of the Spirit, and the Trial of Insight. For example, the Trial of Skill expects Padawans to display learned lightsaber techniques and incredible self-discipline, while the Trial of Insight ensures that Padawans are ready to face the real world, distinguishing truth from lies, solving puzzles, and demonstrating their insight and intelligence. Padawans, be ready, and may the force be with you!

Week 2: Dino Days

Dino Days are the best days of the summer, because the dinosaurs come to life! Our prehistoric friends are just waiting to be unearthed, so be sure to join in on the fun. We will get into paleontologist gear and dig for “fossils”, get our groove3 on with Jurassic Jives and Dinosaur Stomps, excavate info on the various dino species and design their dino eggs, and so much more! Don’t miss out on this roaring good time!

Week 3: Oozy Potions & Gloop

Enjoy brewing up concoctions that fizz, change color, and even explode! Inspired by “Potions” at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the boarding school for magical children which the famous Harry Potter attended, this is the class all “muggle” children wish they had (minus Professor Snape). Now is your chance! Don’t miss out on all the messy science-based fun!

Week 4: Olympic Fever!

This July the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France begins! Our prelude to the excitement includes a brief “warm-up” session each day of some fun facts that will help us get an overall understanding of the history and evolution of the Olympic games, and great Olympians of the past. Then, let the games begin! Olympic-inspired competitions of our own will commence and will have you cheering the Olympic motto, “Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter,” or in English, “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together!”

Week 5: Junior Architects

Calling all budding architects! Develop your artistic, spatial, and engineering skills through intriguing design challenges. Complete projects in collaboration with your peers using simple materials to explore the world of structural design. Add your artistic flare to the finished products to complete your masterpieces as you enjoy getting them ready to present to your peers.

Week 6: Kiddo Comic-Con

Let’s have some fun! Come to camp dressed as your favorite character and enter a world of limitless imagination! While in character you will find the inspiration to design art, create comic book stories (pictures only is fine!), and participate in fun activities with other “characters” which will have you never wanting to re-enter reality!

Week 7: Eco Explorers

It’s summer, so no better time to enjoy the fresh air and all of nature’s beauty! We’ll have our nets and magnifying glasses ready as we search for insects and plants that we might otherwise have missed. We’ll learn why wearing sunscreen is so important, in a very hands-on way. We’ll experiment with building a nest and test our talents with creating art out of the loose parts in nature. But most importantly, mud will become a medium which momma can’t tell us to put down! It’s okay to get dirty in this one!

Week 8: Messy Li'l Monkeys

All things art, slime, sand, and mud. Explore, create, and discover your way through this week in the most fun way possible. We’ll nurture the budding Picasso in you and let you explore various art media. Come in Clothes that can get dirty, because this week is all HANDS ON!

Week 9: Safety Superheroes

Learn survival skills which could save your life or at least just put you more at ease in a tricky situation. If you came across a coyote, is it a good idea to run? If you fall and scratch up your knee and cut open your pants, how will you mend yourself? …and your pants?! If you were in a shopping area and got separated from your parents, where would you go or who should you tell? If you were lost in the woods, do you know how to leave signs of where you are headed for other people to find as you try to find safety? Can you make a sunlight signal with a mirror? You might never have to use these skills, but having this knowledge is like having a personal lifeguard at your service at all times –it can’t hurt!

Week 10: Time Travelers

Transport to a different place in time with your friends by dabbling in the arts, clothing, and fun activities of that era. We will explore Medieval Times, the Wild Wild West, and the Golden Age of Piracy! So get ready to learn how to joust, pan for gold, and have an ARRRRGuably good time finding that stolen treasure as we travel through the ages on a quest for adventure!

Safari Kid Locations

Third Grade & Up

Older students work with more complex themes and dive into them with increased depth. These immersive experiences are tailored to foster learning, innovation, and fun at a higher level.

Themes may vary per location.

Week 1: Data Knights

Week 2: ai explorers, week 6: chatbot pioneers, week 7: animation adventures, week 8: roblox designer.

Summer camps with Safari Kid

Theme Activities (once per week)

It’s summertime, so it’s time for some fun and games with friends! Get ready to enjoy team-building games, party games, games that make you think, and games that make you run! Whether it be indoor games that focus on mental acuity and flexibility or team-building outdoor games focusing on agility, strength, and balance, working together as a team will be the common thread. You won’t have to use the words, “I’m bored” when you are at Safari Kid’s summer camp, because as you can see, we ‘Got Game’!

Balloon Volleyball

Balloons float with enough time to give even the least experienced player a chance to hit the ball and learn how to work as a team in the process!

Emotional Improv.

Play a version of charades that is based on emotions. Young kids are learning to become aware of and name emotions at this time, so this will give them plenty of practice while playing a game that is full of laughter and joy!

Drama-O-Rama!

Campers will enjoy performing arts practice throughout the week with the goal of a Friday performance! Each week campers will rotate learning short plays, dance routines, songs, and even stand-up comedy routines.

2 ∞ & Beyond!

Summer is time for fun, but to avoid the “summer slide” in academics, Safari Kid has devised clever ways to make learning fun! How better to keep sharp than through group games that help practice basic math skills.

Musical Madness

A wide variety of games and activities that are centered around music will provide both physical and social opportunities for harmonious summer fun!

Group Art Stories

Campers will enjoy this social and creative time working as a group to come up with a visual piece of storytelling. Their artwork must help them to tell a made-up story on a given theme.

Feeding Frenzy

Children will follow simple baking recipes to create yummy treats as they effortlessly learn about measurements and fractions firsthand.

Taste Testers

Campers will try simple sauces, salsas, juices, and more to decide which tastes the best or make guesses on the main ingredient.

Create a Card

Practice writing and grammar skills as you are guided to create a card for someone special. Don’t forget to decorate your card for that personal touch of creativity and warmth.

Get out into nature to find Mother Earth’s natural art supplies to create beautiful organic pieces of art. We’ll use a variety of natural materials and dabble in pattern-making and creative composing of our masterpieces. You’ll end up with artwork that will look naturally gorgeous in your garden or will help bring the beauty of the outdoors in!

Outer Space Storytime

Blast off to the outer reaches of the universe by actively listening to an engaging space-themed stories. Reading comprehension skills will be practiced with campers in a way that feels like natural chit-chat about the narrative. It will be an out-of-this-world summer escape from reality!

Summer can get hot, so no better time to cool off with outdoor water-themed fun! Whether it be a hair salon, car wash or soup kitchen, it is advised that all campers come prepared with a big imagination and are ready to brave the waves!

Flashlight Limbo

Playing a game in the dark can be fun, and on a hot day, it just makes sense! So, turn off the hot lights, pull out a strong flashlight, and get ready to limbo!

Balloon Tennis

We’ll use inflated balloons in place of tennis balls for a slower, softer, easier, version of tennis that is sure to get our campers moving and laughing.

Weird Science

Engage in simple but exciting hands-on science experiments.

Green Thumb

Get outside and into nature as you learn about planting, composting, farming, and more through fun hands-on ecologically friendly projects and activities.

Busy Builders

Time to get the creative juices flowing! An intended outcome (ex: robot dog) is announced, then campers figure out how to create this using recycled materials and art supplies.

Lost & Found

Campers will love this fun game which is rooted in teamwork and strategy. They will be divided into two groups and take turns being the hiders and the hunters.

Important training on how to carry yourself with confidence, using body language and words to show assertiveness. Learn skills which will help you to avoid being a victim of bullying. Also learn how to safely be an “upstander” rather than a bystander when you see someone else being bullied.

Native Moves Grooves

Learn about various cultures as you replicate simple movements of traditional dances of various cultures such as “the Hakka” native New Zealanders (Maori) traditional war dance, Bhangra dance of India, Hawaiian Hukilau, Chinese Folk Dance, Latin Fusion, etc.

Flashlight Bowling

A little friendly competition among campers! Fun in the dark bowling on a hot summer day is every camper’s idea of a good time.

Discover how good it feels to give back to others as you create something special to be shared with those people in need or who need cheering up (homeless, children’s hospital, elderly at nursing homes, etc.).

Community Circle (& Wacky Wednesday Share)

Community-building time:

  • Wednesdays are “Wacky Wednesdays Wear” a spirit dress up day. Campers will share their spirit with the group during this time, explaining their wacky wear.
  • Campers will have a “show & tell” – bring something from home they wish to talk about.

Wastewater Treatment Plant The City of Ukiah has made significant investments to build conservation into the structure of our operations. A critical component of our structural conservation has been our state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant. This plant has allowed us to reduce overall water use, reduce discharges to the river, and enhance the supply of sustainable, reliable water resources. The treatment plant also relies on LED lighting and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) motors, which greatly increase energy efficiency.

Ukiah secured a grant from the State Water Resources Control Board to cover about a third of the cost of the recycled water system and secured another grant from CalRecycle to filter storm water before it is discharged to the river.

Learn more about the wastewater treatment plant.

Converting Water Fixtures As the City modernizes its buildings, we are replacing traditional toilets and sink faucets with low flow fixtures, significantly reducing the amount of water used in our facilities.

Using Recycled Water for Outdoor Irrigation The City is using recycled water at the Ukiah Sports Complex, at Oak Manor Elementary, and Oak Manor Park, keeping our fields and parks green while also promoting responsible and sustainable use of our water resources; additional expansion of the recycled water program is underway. Learn more about the Recycled Water Project .

Bike Lanes There are currently approximately 11.2 miles of class II bike lanes in the City of Ukiah. The City is in the design process and intends to expand the distance of bike lanes to 3.8 miles, which will be a total of approximately 15 miles.

Expanding the Great Redwood Trail – Ukiah With broad public support, the City has been very active in developing the Great Redwood Trail within the City limits. The existing 2 miles of class I multi-purpose pathways provides a safe and efficient corridor for bicycle and pedestrian traffic to access major employment centers, services, shopping, residential areas, and the future Mendocino County Courthouse, as well as connectivity to other bicycle routes throughout the City. The fourth phase of this trail will add an additional mile and complete the trail within the City limits from north to south. Learn more about the trail .

The City secured an Urban Greening Grant from the California Natural Resources Agency, which is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment. This $1.78 million grant was awarded in 2017 and used to support the build-out of the Rail Trail .

At the direction of the City Council, the City of Ukiah Paths, Open Space and Creeks Commission prepared a document establishing the policies and procedures for the City crews and other agencies and organizations to follow when performing creek maintenance and garbage and rubbish removal. Learn more .

In partnership with the Community Foundation of Mendocino County and the ReLeaf program, the Parks team has set a goal of planting 50 trees per year. An emphasis on planting trees that provide street shade will expand the benefit of the City’s urban forest.

The City is in the process of updating its General Plan. Included in the proposed 2040 General Plan are new policies prioritizing complete streets, the development and implementation of a Climate Action Plan, preservation of agricultural lands and open space, and other climate friendly policies and goals. Additionally, Ukiah has created a Green Building Toolkit to actively promote energy efficiency upgrades for homeowners and contractors.

Well ahead of state goals, the City of Ukiah is replacing gas and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment with hybrid vehicles and Tier 4, California Air Resources Board compliant equipment. Ukiah Police have deployed an electric vehicle and all City vehicles that travel out of town are certified hybrid vehicles.

Ukiah has always been forward-looking with regard to electric vehicles. We have had electric vehicle (EV) charging stations since the 1980’s. Currently, the City has public EV charging at the public parking lot on Oak and Standley Streets.

The City has also invested heavily in retiring outdated diesel equipment and replace generators, mowers, and tractors and other equipment used by public works and parks maintenance teams with vehicles that are compliant with new emission requirements from the California Air Resources Control Board.

City facilities have transitioned to energy efficient LED lighting, which are estimated to consume 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than traditional incandescent lighting. These changes resulted in significant cost savings for the city.

The facilities that have made this conversion include the Ukiah Valley Conference Center, the Grace Hudson Museum, City Hall, the Water Treatment Facility, and more.

  • Minimize runoff by converting to low maintenance/native plants. Avoid over-watering your lawn.
  • Ensure that your driveway is clear of motor oil, paint, and all other forms of debris.
  • Clear away any animal waste or yard clippings and minimize the use of fertilizers and pesticides in your yard.
  • When washing your car, be sure to only use products labeled “non-toxic,” “phosphate free,” and “biodegradable.”
  • Storm drains are only designed to drain rainwater. Never dump anything down storm drains, including pool and hot tub water.

We have also streamlined how our fire response teams are structured to ensure full funding, adequate resources, and available equipment.

Ukiah Valley Fire District Annexation In November 2021, the Ukiah Valley Fire Protection District increased its service territory to include the City of Ukiah within its boundaries, creating a unified district that serves the entire Ukiah Valley. This annexation of service territory resolved a funding discrepancy, establishing an additional $900,000 to $1 million in annual revenue necessary to meet the growing needs of our region. This has included:

  • More firefighters and paramedics: A minimum of 33 firefighters are required to serve the Ukiah Valley. With a more secure and robust source of funding, the Fire Authority is increasing our ranks of full-time firefighters and paramedics.
  • New and improved equipment: Revenue collected as a result of the annexation allows the Fire Authority to purchase more modern equipment in order to be prepared for increasingly dangerous fire seasons.
  • Faster response times: Through 2020, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority received over 3,700 calls for service. As a result of the annexation and additional funding, the need to send “Engine Couples” (2 firefighters) instead of the recommended “Engine Companies” (3 firefighters), is minimized.
  • Fair and equitable funding: Of the over 3,700 calls in 2020, two-thirds came from within the City of Ukiah. The additional revenue will come from applying the Fire District’s two existing special district funding measures (Measures J and B) to City residents, which means City residents will now pay the same small fee currently paid by residents in the District through their annual property tax bill.

circus safari sommercamp

To reduce our reliance on the electrical grid, the City of Ukiah has identified city buildings ideal for solar installation. To date, the City has installed 40 Photovoltaic (Solar) panels at the Civic Center, saving the City approximately $26,061 and reducing our carbon footprint by 42.6 metric ton over 17 years.

Additionally, the water re-circulation system that heats the Ukiah Municipal Swimming Pool is 100% solar powered.

The City continues to pursue funding opportunities to outfit additional municipal facilities with solar. The City is currently involved with adding 123 kW of solar system at Anton Stadium parking lot. This solar system will help reduce our carbon footprint by approximately 62 metric ton yearly. We have also implemented automation for heating and cooling of City facilities to reduce power use during peak times.

Animal Tag The goal is to turn everyone into the same animal as your group. Assign children to 4-6 different animal groups. Once the game begins all children should be making animals noises and trying to safely tag each other. Once a child is tagged, s/he becomes the animal of the person that tagged her/him. The game continues until all children are the same animal Monkey Says Monkey Do This game is a variation of Simon Says. Pick one child as the monkey. Have the other children stand in a circle. The children must fulfill the commands of the child designated as the monkey only if it begins with monkey. If you say “Monkey says, clap your hands!” children must clap their hands. But, if you just say “Clap your hands!” children must not follow the command; if they do, they will be disqualified from the game. The last child standing is the winner of the game.

Sarah, these are perfect for this theme. Thanks for sharing.

Your first idea sparked one of my own! Each summer, we play a game of counselor hide and seek, where some of our counselors will hide somewhere around campus, and then groups of campers, led by a counselor, will walk around to try and find them. In this game, each counselor hiding is given colored strips of paper (each counselor has their own unique color), and as each group discovers their hiding spot, they must give up one of the strips. The group with the most colored strips at the end of a designated time wins. Combined with your idea of counselors dressing up though, you could do the same thing and call it a counselor safari hunt! That would be so much fun, especially if you could get the strips of paper in safari prints (I’m sure you could in the scrapbooking section). I think we’ll add that to our agenda for next summer!
