St. Kitts Shore Excursions: Trains, Boats, & Beaches
St. Kitts and Nevis is an enthralling island nation that can be visited on a southern Caribbean cruise , though itās not as well known with tourists as its larger neighbors to the north. St. Kitts and Nevis may be small islands, but a stop there comes with a variety of things to do. When visiting the port of Basseterre on a St. Kitts cruise , shore excursions will help you experience the best part of the tiny country.Ā Ā
One of the best ways to see a large portion of the island of St. Kitts is on the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. Itās a double-decker train that seems like it belongs in a different era. The top level is open air and provides 360-degree views of the scenery youāll be passing, which consists of scenic coastline, lushly green forests, sugar cane fields, and little slices of the countryside of the island. This exciting yet laid-back mode of transportation is one of the most popular St. Kitts shore excursions.Ā Ā
If you want to be more active during your time in Basseterre, snorkeling is a great way to do so.Ā Opt for a Caribbean shore excursion that combine a beach break with snorkeling gear so you can relax on a pristine St. Kitts beach and easily take sojourns from the sand to glide about in the water and discover its underwater world. Or you can go on a catamaran cruise that takes you on a tour of St. Kitts and Nevis as seen from the water before stopping at a coral reef for some snorkeling.Ā Ā
While deciding what to do in port, donāt forget about the Nevis part of St. Kitts and Nevis. Though your ship will be moored on the larger island of St. Kitts, several of the St. Kitts cruise excursions offer transportation there. Youāll enjoy a quick and scenic boat ride across the channel from Basseterre to Nevis. Once there, you can explore the little town by its harbor, visit breathtaking beaches, do some jungle hikes, or take a bus tour around the island.Ā Ā
To book these St. Kitts shore excursions and others, you simply need a cruise reservation! Reserve your stateroom or suite and then pre-reserve your perfect excursion with our easy-to-use online booking platform before your ship sails away to the Caribbean.

St. Kitts is home to some of the best examples of West Indian architecture, all of which is set amid a dramatically beautiful landscape. The best shore excursion is a well-organized island tour, featuring a visit to the 17th-century British fortress at Brimstone Hill and the sites of the capital. The beaches here are magnificent, including Friar's Bay, which opens to the Atlantic and the Caribbean.

We did the day trip to Nevis last Nov. It was very nice. Tour of the island, lunch at the beach, a few hours on the beach. Nice boat ride.
Lots of options for nice pics, not a lot of places to spend extra (which was fine with me). Some walking, not super strenuous though.

We think we'll be gong to Basseterre in March on Eclipse (substituted port but not official yet so no excursions available) . Since we've been to St Kitts, I would love to take the ferry to Nevis on our own. How long is the ride from Basseterre to Nevis? Besides the beach, what else is there to see. I have walking issues and walking on sand is very difficult.
I have been on the Day Trip to Nevis.
The baths are outdoors- there is one area down a few steps that is a square pool, and then down more steps is a long rectangular trough like area with walking/sitting areas on both sides of the water. The water runs through this area- a contained stream. I put my feet/legs in and the water was quite hot but soothing. There were some locals that were fully in the water, but no one on our tour got all the way in, because we had to get back into the van and continue our tour- it was one of the first things we did. My mom doesn't do stairs well and elected not to go down to the water but to just take some pictures.
We had the beach almost to ourselves after lunch as the weather was cloudy with intermittent rain sprinkles. The catamaran trip pulled up about halfway into our beach time, so if you are interested in going for a drink or two, make sure you do it early.
Ferry was about 30 minutes each way from St. Kitts if I remember correctly.
We've enjoyed taking this one several times! :)

Thank you for this information..just what I needed to know. How far is the ferry from the dock? I thought the ferry was a lot longer ride than that. What I'd like to do is take the ferry on my own, maybe soak my feet like you did if I can, have lunch, maybe check out a few shops and then go back to Basseterre. Think of me as your mom....does this sound like a good plan?

Last Jan we did the catamaran 4.5 hr sail to Nevis. Crew were a lot of fun and the sail over was exciting. Be prepared to get wet if you sit by the nets. The beach picnic was very well done. This was turned out to be our favorite excursion that we did with the cruise line. Ā Ā Sent from my iPhone using Forums
How long were you at the beach? I think I saw somewhere that chairs and umbrellas are not available so I'm debating this excursion if our itinerary changes.
Very disorganized in October. We were their first group since the hurricane and it was confusing enough that two members of the catamaran tour got into a bloodied fist fight over the beach chairs. The shore patrol was called in. We didn't get our free drinks and the beach was still being cleaned up. That was a month ago, so I'm sure it's better. But they had a bad day that day.

WOW...2 members on the catamaran crew or 2 passengers from the ship? We're going on March 18 so I'm hoping things will be better in the 4 months between your visit and mine although what you described could happen anywhere.....I would imagine alcohol was involved..
When we did this excursion last Jan there were picnic tables in the shade by the trees in my previous post photo. There was plenty room for all and we had apx 1.5 hrs on the island. A lovely picnic was already set up when we got there along with cold drinks.
Sounds like they had some real challenges with the hurricanes and damage. Hard to believe cruisers would get so scrappy and sad to hear. A little understanding of the difficulties involved would have been helpful.

We did the St Kitts Catamaran Sail and Nevis Beach and Get Away last April and it was excellent, the Catamaran is beautiful and the crew was the best ever. There were no beach chairs but there were tables to sit at while eating lunch in the shade we used our towels from the ship. Here is a link to the reviews from trip advisor....

This do it yourself day trip is not easily done. First, you need to have the public ferry schedule. Then know that when you arrive, you need transportation /driver arranged ahead. The ferry port doesn't have cabs just sitting there. Next, you need to have plenty of time for the return trip. Know that the public ferrys will not cross back to St. Kitts in rough waters or strong winds.
We did lots of research on a diy day and found it would be pretty tough/iffy on our own. So we took the ferry trip thru X two years ago. Last year we stayed on St Kitts to visit and have lunch at a plantation. This Jan. ....haven't decided yet.

We have done the Nevis excursion and it was enjoyable. The beach restaurant was a bit rustic but food was average. Given the cost of the excursion I would probably not repeat it though as there isn't much to see. We really preferred the swimming with dolphins excursion on St Kitts.

Thank you both for good information. We did the sugar train last time in St. Kitts. I think I'll book the X tour to St. Kitts. We've never been disappointed, although I agree they can be pricey, but I do like the peace of mind in knowing that if the ferry is delayed the ship will wait for us. Swimming with dolphins also sounds fun but they generally rate them as strenuous and I have limited mobility walking.

St. Kitts Catamaran Sail And Nevis Beach Getaway Excursions

We are trying to make a decision between these two Celebrity Excursions. Which will give the best views of both islands from the water? We don't really care about the snorkeling as we will doing that at other stops so we're more interested in the sail and then the beach experience on Nevis. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

We were also buy I heard it's a long boat ride there which eats up most of your excursion time...also heard snorkeling is weak. We were referred to Palms Court Gardens for a day pass. Excellent Tripadvisor reviews! I think that's where we are heading in April on our St Kitts stop......

We took that excursion last year.
Catamaran sail was the best part.
Beach was small, clean and afforded a nice view of St. Kitts.
BBQ lunch was good, nothing unusual nor innovative but hot food was hot, cold food cold.
If you enjoy catamaran sailing, you will be happy. If you are looking for a great beach stop, there are better options available.
If they offer an excursion called "Fan-ta-sea catamaran sail to Nevis with Snorkel" it is VERY good. I'm not sure if Celebrity offers it. I took it twice with Royal Caribbean. I know that a lot of the excursions are shared between the two lines. Look for it. It was towards the end of the listed options. It was one of the best excursions that I have ever taken! (I've been on a lot of excursions!)
They sail to a snorkeling spot on St. Kitts, then cross to Nevis. You are given about 2 hours on a fabulous beach on Nevis. The Four Seasons is on the same beach. You then sail back. They give you lunch and as much as you care to drink. Alcohol is served only after the snorkeling.
We did that excursion last Nov. Our crew must have been "looser" because the served alcohol the whole day. The snorkeling is weak and the beach is just ok by caribbean standards. The Catamaran trip was the best part of the excursion. Oh, and the lunch was on the weak side too. It was some kind of chicken curry potato salad or some such thing.
We did this excursion 2/16 and 7/16. Both times were a great experience. The beach was pretty nice, IMO. It had darker sand due to the volcanic nature of Nevis. It was a nice long, wide beach with calm water. It is called Pinney beach for those who wish to look it up on TripAdvisor or google it. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I thought the snorkeling was adequate, the food quite good, and overall experience to be excellent.
Oh we enjoyed the excursion, I just thought the actual catamaran ride was the best part of it. I wonder if you snorkeled at a different spot. We were next to an old sunken fishing boat (I wanted to paint Carnival on the side of it:D). The water was clear but there wasn't much in the way of fish other than those silver and black stripped fish that are everywhere. We saw one stingray which was cool.
It was Sh**en bay (rhymes wth smitten, CC won't let me write the actual name, LOL). It was good when we were there. We saw a turtle, cuttlefish, stingray, barracuda, a few fish varieties, and a squid. Not too shabby! There was little in way of coral. It had very clear water and the sunken ship. Im sure it was the same place.

Can you tell me what the lunch was when you did this excursion?
On our cruise, the trip to Nevis was cancelled due to high seas. The snorkeling was very good the times I have been at the bay referred to above. There is an excursion that just does the snorkeling along the coast and that is a good choice in rough seas.

Its a great spot...lovely refreshing pool, gardens, views, nice lunch, good bar...quiet relaxation early in the day...livelier after lunch...we enjoyed it!
Make sure you have booked a way back.,.taxis do not like to pick up there and its a longish walk back...but at least it's downhill

Your day begins when you meet your guide just next to your St. Kitts cruise ship pier. You will board comfortable air-conditioned transportation and head to Frigate Bay Beach. You'll be taken to the dock where the mini-speedboats are waiting. You have the option to request to ride solo or double up with someone else (see the order form). Each mini-boat holds a maximum of 2 guests. These boats are both safe and fun and the best way to explore the coves and bays of the St. Kitts Peninsula.
You'll receive a safety briefing along with simple instructions for operation and then you'll just follow your guide as you open the throttle to skip and skim over the water along the sheltered peninsula. The mini boats resemble a cross between a wave runner and a small zodiac. You'll stop to snorkel at a secluded cove, and enjoy the crystal clear waters where you can explore for 45 minutes the world beneath the surface. After the guide passes out the snorkel gear, they will show you how to use it and then lead you through the warm water. Admire a rich selection of marine life such as colorful coral, tropical fish, sponges, and more. When the snorkeling is completed, you will pull yourself back on your speedboat. Then, you will explore the peninsula further, before heading back to the famous Frigate Bay beach for refreshments (seasonal fruit and juice).
You'll have a choice to either re-board your included transportation or choose to spend the day enjoying the beach, restaurants, and beachside bars and return at your own leisure and expense later. Kick back and enjoy the sandy beaches and waving palms as you enjoy the vacation day of your dreams!
What is included?
- Round-trip transportation from your cruise terminal
- Fully insured mini speed boat
- Mini Speed Boat operating instructions
- Guided cruising through the Southeast Peninsula
- All snorkel equipment including mask, sterilized snorkel tube/mouthpiece, fins, and flotation vest
- Snorkel at a secluded cove

Excursion Notes
- We suggest you bring along sun protection, a swimsuit, a towel, a change of clothes, a camera, and cash to purchase food, drinks, tips, shopping, etc.

Why St Kitts deserves a spot on your Caribbean bucket list
This less-travelled gem offers volcanic peaks, stop-in-your-tracks beaches, a rich history and opportunity aplenty for adventure
So, when I got the opportunity to return to paradise shores and visit St Kitts this year, naturally, I jumped at the chance. Unlike some of its better-known Caribbean counterparts, the tiny two-island nation ā the smallest country in the Americas, FYI ā has an uncrowded allure and plenty to offer beyond all-inclusive resorts and fly-and-flop breaks.
Draped in lush rainforest and crowned by the mighty 3,972ft volcanic peak of Mount Liamuiga, St Kitts boasts superb hiking, footprint-free beaches, historic sights and characterful bars, plus direct flights from London and the opportunity to visit its sleepier sister isle Nevis. Itās made for those who want to venture beyond the regionās usual suspects and explore local culture, as well as laze by the pool.
Sound like your cup of tea? Here are our highlights, including what to do, where to stay and how to get thereā¦
So, where to begin?
Of course, you could make a beeline for the beach, but Iād suggest shaking off the jet lag and making the most of the islandās lush, verdant interior with a rainforest hike.
We meet our guide OāNeil Mulraine at Wingfield Estate, home to old sugar mill ruins and the first working rum estate and distillery in the Caribbean. The site has been painstakingly restored by Yorkshireman Maurice Widdowson, allowing visitors to discover the impressive remains and learn about the islandās turbulent colonial past.
We leave the estate behind as OāNeil guides us through jumbles of greenery into the dense rainforest. Itās a relief to escape the scorching midday sun and bask in the shade of mango, tamarind and almond trees. OāNeil has been leading tours here for over forty years and his botanical knowledge shines through, as he introduces us to many of St Kittsā most important plants and their medicinal properties, which have been used for centuries to cure all sorts of ailments.
In the mood for adventure? You can live out your best Tarzan fantasies and plunge through the rainforest canopy on an exhilarating zip line with Sky Safaris . We skip the thrill-seeking and head back to Wingfield for a masterclass in rum.
In 2020, Mauriceās son Jack founded the Old Road Rum Company , on a mission to reclaim the islandās past and bring back rum distillation to the island. For now, itās crafted from imported batch rum, aged for 12 years then blended and bottled.
I get my first taste in a glorious nutmeg-dusted rum punch, which I sip a little too quickly as we tour the preserved aqueduct, chimney, boiling house, mill house and lime kiln. Feeling a little woozy, Iām grateful for the bowl of plantain chips plonked next to me as we start the tasting.
Hit the strip
Now that youāve got a taste for rum, make your way to āThe Stripā, which borders South Frigate Bay. Here, youāll find a row of rum bars, beach shacks and casual restaurants where laid-back Kittitians gather to eat, drink and ālimeā (local slang for socialising).
We nab a spot at the aptly-named Boozies on the Beach, and savour ice-cold bottles of Carib beer and frozen mango margaritas, soundtracked by the lapping waves and soulful reggae beats. With the sand beneath my toes and the tropical sun beating down on my face, I find it all too easy to get into the limin' spirit.
We rock up on a Tuesday afternoon, so the atmosphere is relatively mellow. If you want to experience the islandās party scene in all its glory, Friday and Saturday nights are your best bet, when the strip comes alive with bonfires, barbecues and live reggae and soca music into the early hours.
Catamaran cruise to Nevis
No visit to St Kitts is complete without a day trip to Nevis. You can catch a public ferry or water taxi over to the pint-sized island, but a catamaran cruise is a fun way to do it. We opt for a half-day tour with Leeward Island Charters which includes snorkelling stops, an open bar and a beach lunch in Nevis.
As we sail across the cobalt waters, watching palm-lined beaches and rugged mountains roll by, I stretch out on the upper deck feeling utterly relaxed. After an hour or so, we don our snorkels and float weightlessly in the still waters, surrounded by all kinds of tropical fish and multi-hued coral. Itās the perfect morning.
Before long, Nevisā dramatic volcanic peak comes into view and we drop anchor at Pinneyās Beach, which is lined with a collection of multicoloured beach bars and shacks. We head straight to Sunshineās Beach Bar & Grill, which, apparently, is the place to be. Previous visitors include Beyonce, Jay Z and Oprah no less.
Weāre lucky enough to meet the vivacious owner, Sunshine, who insists on sending an array of specialities over to our table. We feast on fluffy rice, smoky kidney beans, grilled snapper and the best mac and cheese Iāve tried, washing it down with the barās legendary Killer Bee cocktail. The exact recipe is a highly guarded secret, but rest assured, it contains a hefty measure of rum ā no more than two glasses is advisable, according to locals.
A farm-to-table experience at Liamuiga Natural Farm
If an authentic culinary experience is what youāre after, St Kitts wonāt disappoint. While many Caribbean tourist hotspots have been heavily influenced by US culture in recent years, the island has stayed true to its roots and its unpretentious eateries serve up local classics. Weāre talking spicy goat water stew, crispy conch fritters, sweet coconut dumplings, fried plantain and the juiciest grilled lobster youāve ever tasted.
For a real foodie experience, Liamuiga Natural Farm , a family-owned coffee and citrus plantation set high in the rainforest, is not to be missed. Here, guests are invited to learn about the farmās organic practices and discover the vast array of fruit and veg grown on site (guavas, passion fruits, coconuts and green bananas) with the tour culminating in a farm-to-table feast.
After a steep climb into the thick rainforest, winding round tight hairpin bends and passing mango-stealing monkeys, our ex-military truck pulls up at the plantation. āItās time for breakfast, I hope youāre hungry!ā our guide Kerryn āTiemā Williams exclaims.
On a communal wooden table, weāre presented with a colourful spread created entirely from the farmās produce. I pile my banana leaf (no plates here) high with pumpkin pancakes and papaya jam, breadfruit salad, ackee, saltfish and aubergine ratatouille, unable to resist rounds two and three, even though I know weāll be eating again within the hour.
Our bellies full, Williams talks us on a stroll around the site, showing us some of the ingredients used in our breakfast, as well as pointing out pineapples, mangos, green bananas, avocados, limes and all kinds of squash. Then, itās back to the table for a three-course lunch, which includes vegetable broth with a zingy chilli sauce, poached fish, salad and the creamiest coffee ice cream Iāve ever tasted.
Anything else I should do?
If your weary legs are tired after all that activity, then a trip to the beach is in order. Cockleshell Bay, on the islandās south peninsula is considered one of the finest, with a long stretch of golden-yellow sand, warm waters and sweeping views over to Nevis. Turtle beach, which is protected from the choppy Atlantic waves, provides excellent snorkelling, while South Bank Bay on the eastern tip of the island is ideal for those who prefer to venture off the beaten track.
For history buffs, thereās Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park , a sprawling hilltop defence set up by British forces in the 1690s and now a Unesco World Heritage Site. You could easily spend a whole day here, touring the well-preserved fortress and extensive military museum and taking in the panoramic views across neighbouring St Barths, Saba and Stasia.
St Kitts Scenic Railway , which takes passengers on an 18-mile ride around the north coast of the island, is an excellent, low-key way to see the island. The narrow gauge line is the only working railway in the Caribbean and was used to transport sugar cane from the plantations to the mills until 2005, when the industry shut down. Now, tourists can enjoy a two-hour ride on the historic double-decker train, with guided commentary, drinks and entertainment included.
Where should I stay?
Belle mont sanctuary resort at kittitian hill.
Set high up in the hills, surrounded by lush greenery and wild inhabitants, Belle Mont is a paradise for nature lovers. There are 40 cottages and villas in total, each with its own private plunge pool and open-air bathroom, complete with a toilet, shower and freestanding tub. Panic not, privacy isnāt an issue ā the cottages are enveloped in strategically planted palms, allowing you to drink in the sweeping sea views, with only butterflies, jungle frogs and perhaps the odd vervent monkey for company.
The hotelās main restaurant, The Kitchen, is a destination within itself. The food philosophy is farm-to-fork (the fruit, veg and herbs are all grown on the estate and the fish and meat is all local too) with a focus on authentic Caribbean flavours. Think saltfish fritters, pickled pineapple and aubergine, Mahi-Mahi with papaya chutney, rice and peas, plus tongue-tinglingly delicious desserts like sweet potato pie and carrot cake. Just incredible.
Park Hyatt St Kitts
For beachside luxury with a side of Caribbean charm, head to Park Hyatt St Kitts . The five-star is perfectly positioned on Banana Bay, a curve of flawless beach with calm crystalline waters. Rooms (there are 126 in total) are airy and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies or patios with vistas over the manicured lawns and glittering sea. Top level rooms also boast private plunge pools and sundecks. The food is a delight, whether you opt for the lavish breakfast buffet, a seafood-heavy lunch at the Fishermanās Village or a fancy fine dining experience at Stone Barn. Service is slick and the staff are warm, friendly and attentive, without overdoing it.
The sprawling resort is a top choice if you have children in tow ā thereās a large kid-friendly pool overlooking the sea, a complimentary kidsā club and myriad daily activities from kayak lessons to movie screenings. While the little ones are occupied, parents can laze on a sunlounger by the adults-only pool, head to the Sugar Mill spa for a pampering treatment or take advantage of the hotelās water taxis and explore the islandās surroundings.
Rooms at Park Hyatt St. Kitts start from $375 (plus taxes) per room per night on a room only basis. Book here
When to visit
Peak season runs from December to April, when the weather is at its best (warm, clear and dry) but the prices are higher. Rates are cheaper during summer and autumn when itās hotter, stickier and wetter. Hurricane season officially runs from June to November, with the highest risk in August and September and October.
If you visit at the end of June, your trip will coincide with the legendary St Kitts Music Festival , which has drawn household names over the years including Shaggy, Jason Derulo, Sean Paul and Shaggy. Mary J Blige is on the line-up this year. December is also a great time to visit if you want to soak up the party atmosphere, as St Kitts Carnival (known as Sugar Mas), is in full swing from mid-December to the beginning of January.
How to get there
British Airways flies direct from London Gatwick to St Kitts twice weekly, with return flights starting from Ā£506 per person. The flight is around ten hours and includes an hour-long stopover in Antigua each way, but you donāt have to disembark. Book here
