The PGA Tour features a unique offseason that you can barely call an offseason at all. Unlike the NFL, NBA, and MLB offseasons that span multiple months, the PGA Tour takes only a few weeks off before getting right back to the action.

When does the 2022-23 PGA Tour season start?

Rory McIlroy just won the Tour Championship last weekend to secure his third career FedEx Cup title, but he has only a few weeks to rest before the next season gets underway.

The 2022-23 PGA Tour season will begin in just two weeks at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, Calif. The event will start on Thursday, Sept. 15 at Silverado Resort and Spa. One week later, the best players from the United States and around the world will tee it up in the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club.

The fall/winter schedule will continue through December 11, and after a short break in the action, the unofficial start of the new season will take place at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii on Jan. 5.

PGA Tour begins 2022-23 season — and the end of its decade-long wraparound schedule

Tour will move to a calendar-year schedule in 2024.

It's the end of an era in Napa Valley. 

The PGA Tour will begin its final wraparound season on Thursday with the Fortinet Championship, at the Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif. The Tour has begun in the fall every year since 2013 and an event in Napa has been the lid-lifter in nine of those 10 years.

After the end of the 2022-23 FedEx Cup season, the top-70 players on the points list will advance to the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The top-50 after that will qualify for the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields near Chicago and the top-30 then make the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

The players who finish outside the top-70 will compete in a series of fall events for the chance to end up among the top-125 and retain their PGA Tour cards for 2024. The new season will then start with the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua. 

Starting a season in September meant a long road to the FedEx Cup playoffs. But most of the winners at Napa used that victory as a springboard to East Lake. 

Defending champion Max Homa went on to win the Wells Fargo Championship and finished fifth on the final FedEx Cup points list. He posted the highest finish on the FedEx Cup of any Fortinet Championship winner, bookending a seventh-place finish for Jimmy Walker after he won in 2013. 

Four of the other seven winners from Napa made the Tour Championship: Sangmoon Bae in 2014 (26th on the final points standings), Emiliano Grillo in 2015 (11th), Cameron Champ in 2019 (24th) and Stewart Cink in 2020 (26th).  

Rookies starting early  

There are 28 players who have been defined as rookies for the upcoming season and 27 of them will be competing at Napa. 

Among them is University of North Florida graduate Philip Knowles, who earned his PGA Tour card at the Korn Ferry Finals. He is the third player in UNF history to get his Tour card. 

Other rookies playing this week include Tyson Alexander, a former University of Florida player and the son of former Gators coach Buddy Alexander, Air Force Academy graduate Kyle Westmoreland, the first from that service academy and the second overall in history to play on the Tour, Davis Thompson of St. Simons Island, Ga., who played at Georgia and another former Gator, Nicholas Echavarria.  

Sorenstam to host LPGA event 

World Golf Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam has hosted an American Junior Golf Association tournament at the Hall of Fame in St. Augustine — among other events worldwide.

She’s now going to host an LPGA event beginning next year. 

The Pelican Women’s Championship, which has been played in the Tampa Bay area in November, will now be “The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican.” It will be at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair and will be the final event before the season-ending CME Group Championship in Naples. 

Gainbridge will shift its sponsorship from the LPGA’s tournament at Lake Nona in Orlando. 

Sorenstam will be the only LPGA player to serve as an official host of an official-money event. Lorena Ochoa hosted a tournament in Mexico for nine years, which ended in 2017. 

Sorenstam has also hosted college events the currently co-hosts the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed with Henrik Stenson on the LET and DP World Tour. 

In 2007 and 2008, she was involved in the LPGA’s Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. 

Sorenstam won 72 times on the LPGA, including 10 majors and remains the LPGA’s all-time money leader with over $22 million. She won the U.S. Senior Women’s Open earlier this summer at the Brooklawn Country Club.

The golf season for the PGA Tour is effectively all year round. The PGA Tour has a staggering 50 events over the season. Players move to the warmer areas of the USA, such as California and Hawaii, when the winter sets in across the Midwest and Northern areas.

The Tour plans to make the best of weather conditions for events played in the USA and migrate to other regions and courses with favorable conditions for golf events when inclement conditions take over.

The European/World Tour in the main plays golf during the temperate and warmer months of the northern hemisphere, although sometimes, especially in Scotland, it certainly doesn’t seem so!

And it does end in the Middle East to ensure that its most lucrative season-ending tournament is played in the best possible conditions.

Golf Season In The USA

There are 21 states in the USA where you can play golf all year round as the weather is suitable even in the colder months.

In the Northern states like Michigan, Washington and conditions in the Northeast, where colder weather makes golf unplayable, the golf season will start in April and extend through to October.

Some states can open golf courses as early as March and run through to November, but this will depend on the weather conditions of that particular year, as weather phenomena may affect those dates in individual years.

The Southern States have a more extended golf season than those in the North, but this doesn’t mean that golf is playable all year round. Texas, Florida, and Arizona usually have an open golf season, but sometimes even the hardiest golfers bow to mother nature in December and January.

An important point to remember is that for your scores/handicap to be registered with your member association, you need to play as determined by that association and during the season for your state.

Otherwise, that once-in-a-lifetime 59 will not count!

Let’s now look at the various regions across the USA and the starting and ending dates for the golf season in those areas.

Golf Season In The Pacific West

Golf is an all-year-round sport for California and Hawaii that falls under the NCGA / SCGA and HSGA. Alaska, which falls under the aegis of the AGA, their golf season starts 1st April and ends 31st October – Happy Halloween!

Oregon (OGA) and Washington (MSGA) start their seasons on 1st March, with Oregon ending on 30th November and Washington ending two weeks earlier on 14th November.

Golf Season In The West – Mountain Region

This region covers Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona.

Let’s start with the areas that have an all-year-round golf season. These are Arizona, New Mexico, Southern Utah, and Southern Nevada.

You should note that Nevada and Utah have two golf associations, one for each state’s southern and northern regions.

New Mexico falls under the SCAGA and has golf all year round, as does the Southern Utah Golf Association and Southern Nevada Golf Association.

For golf in Northern Nevada, the season starts on 15th March and ends on 30th November. For golf in Northern Utah, the season opens on 15th March and ends on 14th November. Wyoming has the exact season dates as Montana, opening the season on 1st April and ending on 31st October.

Idaho and Colorado have the exact season closing dates of 14th November, but Idaho’s season opens on 1st March, and Colorado opens two weeks later, on 15th March.

Golf Season In The South – West South Central

If you live in any of these states, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, or Oklahoma, you can play golf all year round as the weather and golf associations there don’t have season dates due to the moderate cold weather in fall and winter and warm spring and hot summer.

While you may get interrupted by some severe storms, rainfall, hail, and the odd tornado, golf here is played whenever players desire.

Golf Season In The South – East South Central

Similar in their weather conditions to the West South Central region, the East South Central states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee have golf all year round. The final state in this area is Kentucky. The season opens there on 1st March and ends on 30th November.

Golf Season In The South – South Atlantic

As with many other states in the South Central West and South Central East, most states in this South (South Atlantic) have golf all year round.

The states that offer golf throughout the year are Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.

Although some courses, the Augusta National (home of the Masters) is one of them, it is closed June-August as it is considered too hot to play. This also allows maintenance/modernization of the course as needed so it can be up to its usual immaculate condition in time for its world-famous tournament.

West Virginia (and Country Roads) opens their golf season on 1st March and closes it on 30th November.

Maryland opens its golf season on 15th March and closes for the year on 14th November, and Delaware, which also closes its golf season on the same date, opens later than Maryland on the 1st of April.

Aside from the states that offer golf all year round, you can see that the general golf season operates from either March or April to mid or late November. As we move further North, the golf seasons become shorter, with virtually no states offering golf all year round.

Golf Season In The Midwest – West North Central

South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota all open their golf season on 1st April in this region. South Dakota and Minnesota close their season on the 31st of October, while Iowa closes its golf season on the 14th of November.

Kansas opens its golf season on March 1st and ends on December 31st, while Missouri begins on March 1st but ends on November 14th. North Dakota’s golf season ends on November 15th and opens for play on 15th March.

Nebraska follows North Dakota regarding their opening date of 15th March but ends a day later on the 15th of November.

Golf Season In The Midwest – East North Central

Three states have the same golf season dates in this region, opening on April 1st and closing on October 31st. Those three states are Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. Indiana opens golf season on the 1st of March and closes on the 14th of November.

Ohio has 5 different golf associations, and they each open and close at slightly different times compared to each other. The various golf associations open the season between March 15th and April 1st and close between 31 October and 30th November.

The Greater Cincinnati Golf Association, Miami Valley Golf Association, and Ohio Golf Association open on the 15th of March, while the North Ohio Golf Association and Toledo District Golf Association open on the 1st of April.

Closing dates also vary, with the GCGA closing on 14th November, the MVGA closing on the 30th November, NOGA on the 31st October, OGA on the 30th November, and TDGA on the 31st of October.

It seems Ohio could be a complicated place to play golf, so check with your golf association in your region to make sure your scores are legal.

Golf Season In The North East – Middle Atlantic

The New York region has three different golf associations and, like the Midwest region above, have similar dates for the opening and closing of their golf seasons. Like other regions in the northern areas of the USA, all-year-round golf is not possible due to the severe weather conditions over the late fall, winter, and early spring.

Except for the New York State Golf Association and Rochester Golf Association, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York all open their golf season on April 1st and close on November 14th.

The NYSGA and RGA open on April 15th and close on October 31st.

Golf Season In The North – New England

There are six states in this region, four of which have the exact dates for the opening and closing of their respective golf seasons.

Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts open their season on April 1st and close on November 14th. Maine and Vermont open on the 1st of April and close on the 31st of October.

Now that we have covered the golf season in the various states in the USA let’s look at some of the golf seasons around the world, starting with our northern neighbor, Canada.

The Golf Season In Canada

Southern Canada has similar weather to the Northern USA and Northern Canada – well, that’s just freezing in the winter months!

The Canadian golf season opens in March and April and ends in November. Even though the season begins in April, there will be times when the weather will not allow golf in the early fall – unless you fancy playing in six inches of snow and sub-freezing temperatures.

When Is Golf Season In The UK?

Golf season in the UK starts in April and ends in late September. During the spring and summer months, the days are longer and warmer, providing excellent conditions for golf. It’s possible on a fair day in late June to start as early as 6 am and play until 10 pm.

However, the UK weather is unpredictable, and some courses are not always ready in April, especially if there has been a particularly wet winter. Also, in recent years, the weather has remained good for October and well into November. For these reasons, many UK golfers will play golf year-round as long as courses are open. 

Although you can play golf in the rain , it’s not much fun playing in the cold and wet. However, if I get the urge and the conditions are not too bad, I’ll brave a few rounds over the winter. You will usually have to follow ‘winter rules,’ which can involve playing off an AstroTurf carry mat which I have yet to master!

The European Golf Season

Since much of Europe has similar weather conditions to the USA, they have identical golf seasons to America.

Northern Europe has similar golf season dates to the Northern USA. At the same time, mid and southern regions operate similar seasons to that of the corresponding states in the Midwest and Southern USA.

In Europe, the golf season typically runs from April to October, with some of the southern areas having a slightly longer season from March to November. Still, golf finishes until the late spring once the winter closes in.

Golf Season In New Zealand & Australia

Australia and New Zealand are southern hemisphere countries and tend to have longer golf seasons than the USA. You can play all year round in Australia if you can handle the heat there.

New Zealand is a far more temperate climate, and there are periods when the cold and snow prevent golf from being played. Thus the season runs from September to late May.

When Is Golf Season In South Africa?

South Africa generally has an all-around golf season, especially inland. While winter temperatures can be cold, the higher altitude regions such as Gauteng don’t have snow and severely inclement weather, so you can play golf there year-round.

On the Eastern coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the winter weather is generally very mild, and both the North and South Coast are pretty pleasant for golf during that time, with temperatures often in the mid-70s and low 80s.

While the wind can be severe, the humidity is much lower in winter than in summer, making the East coast a desirable destination to play golf.

There are some excellent golf courses and golf estates, and for visitors from the USA and the UK, they are ideal destinations for some great golf in the sun away from the ice and snow.

On the West Coast around Cape Town and the South Western coastal areas, the weather in winter is prone to severe rain, winds, storms, and high seas, and while there are some beautiful courses there, the weather in winter is often too chaotic for a decent round of golf.

Summer in those areas is enjoyable and offers some exceptional playing conditions, and the views of the ocean and coastline aren’t too bad either! As with other Southern hemisphere regions, the best weather for golf is from September to May, but realistically, you can play golf in South Africa all year round.

What we know and don't know about the PGA Tour's upcoming changes

ATLANTA -- PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced another series of sweeping and lucrative changes Wednesday ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

In its ongoing battle with LIV Golf for the best players in the world, the PGA Tour committed another $146 million to its players in an attempt to keep them.

The changes come about a week after Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy led a meeting of 22 players at a hotel near Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. The players presented their proposals to Monahan, and the tour quickly implemented many of their suggested changes.

"It's atypical, but I think when you're in a situation like this, that's understood," Monahan said.

Here's what we know about what's changing on the PGA Tour in the 2022-23 season:

Monahan referred to changes affecting "top players." Who are they?

By the PGA Tour's definition, players who finish in the top 20 in the Player Impact Program will be considered "top players." They will be required to compete in the 13 elevated events, if they're eligible to compete in them, and three other non-elevated PGA Tour events to receive their PIP bonuses at the end of the season.

For the 2022-23 wrap-around season, the top 20 players in the current PIP formula and revised one will be considered top players.

What are the elevated events?

There are now 13 elevated events that will include top players: the three FedEx Cup Playoffs events (FedEx St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship and Tour Championship), Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament, WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Sentry Tournament of Champions, The Players and four yet-to-be-determined ones from among existing PGA Tour tournaments.

Who gets to play in the new elevated tournaments?

Those details are still to be worked out. It isn't exactly clear whether they'll include the top 70 players in the world who are PGA Tour members, the top 50 or the top 30. Or even somewhere in-between.

The "top 20 players," who will be defined by the revised Player Impact Program, might be able to gain exemptions because of their popularity, including Woods, even if they don't play in the required 20 events.

If they're eligible, the top players would also compete in the four major championships -- the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open -- as well as three other additional PGA Tour events.

"I think if you're trying to sell a product to TV and to sponsors and to try to get as many eyeballs on professional golf as possible, you need to at least let people know what they're tuning in for," McIlroy said. "When I tune into a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game I expect to see Tom Brady throw a football. When I tune into a Formula 1 race I expect to see Lewis Hamilton in a car.

"Sometimes what's happened on the PGA Tour is we all act independently and we sort of have our own schedules, and that means that we never really get together all that often."

Can the PGA Tour lure back players who left for LIV Golf with these changes?

Even if players wanted to come back, many of them signed multi-year contracts with LIV Golf. The top players, including past major champions Brooks Koepka , Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson , have deals that reportedly included signing bonuses between $100 million and $200 million. The aggressive changes the PGA Tour made still wouldn't affect their financial bottom lines.

Besides, Monahan was rather blunt when he was asked Wednesday if a player who defected to LIV Golf and had second thoughts about leaving after seeing the PGA Tour's improvements could come back. Would his suspension be lifted?

"No," Monahan said. "They've joined the LIV Golf series and they've made that commitment. For most of them, they've made multi-year commitments. As I've been clear throughout, every player has a choice, and I respect their choice, but they've made it. We've made ours. We're going to continue to focus on the things that we control and get stronger and stronger."

McIlroy hoped the increased purses and additional elevated events might influence some players to stick with the PGA Tour. McIlroy said he talked to Open Championship winner Cameron Smith two days after he lifted the Claret Jug at St. Andrews. Smith is reportedly close to leaving for LIV Golf, along with six or seven other players shortly after the PGA Tour regular season ends.

"Guys that are thinking one way or another, honestly I don't care if they leave or not," McIlroy said. "It's not going to make a difference to me. But I would at least like people to make a decision that is completely informed and basically know this is what's coming down the pipeline. This is what you may be leaving behind. I just don't want people making decisions [when they're] hearing information from one side and not from another."

How will the Player Impact Program be affected?

Besides doubling the number of players who will benefit (10 to 20) and the amount of money that will be distributed ($50 million to $100 million), the PGA Tour is adjusting the formula for how players will be measured on their impact on the tour -- or pretty much their popularity. Tiger Woods finished first in PIP last season, after Phil Mickelson suggested on social media that he had won.

Monahan said the winner in 2022 and 2023 will receive a $15 million bonus.

The tour hired a research company in September 2021 to conduct "an expanded player awareness survey" to look at data for more players and to track awareness results among fans.

"Additionally, we identified significant changes in social media platform engagement, specifically around how people engage with this medium, which platforms are currently popular, and what date is available for measurement," the tour said in a statement. "Social media is also a driver of awareness and a player's level of engagement is a driver of their awareness score."

As a result of the study, starting in 2023, two separate awareness scores will be added and the social media component will be eliminated. Players will be measured by internet searches, general awareness, golf fan awareness, media mentions and broadcast exposure.

"Ultimately, and this is from people that are far smarter than I am, it's from our data analytics team who's put a lot of time and effort into this, [senior vice president for data science and technology solutions] Mike Vitti in particular," Monahan said. "When you look at the social media index, social media and all the platforms are changing, and your ability to measure them becomes more and more challenging. Some are in the index; some are not."

Will these changes create greater division in the PGA Tour?

The PGA Tour has always been a circuit driven by superstars, whether it was Arnold Palmer , Jack Nicklaus , Gary Player or Tiger Woods. The sport's biggest names are the ones that sell tickets and attract sponsors, advertisers and TV partners.

With past major champions like Johnson, Patrick Reed , Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka defecting to LIV Golf, the tour realized it had to take care of its main attractions better.

"This isn't some sort of renegade group trying to take some sort of power grab of the PGA Tour," Rory McIlroy said. "This is, 'OK, how can we make this tour better for everyone that's going to play on it now and everyone that's going to play on the PGA Tour going forward?'"

But McIlroy insists that every member of the PGA Tour will have an opportunity to compete in the elevated events and earn a lot of money in the Player Impact Program if they perform well on the course.

"The reason we're trying to do this is we're trying to build a tour for the future [and for] young, ambitious players that want to be the best players in the game," McIlroy said. "If you want to be the best player in the game, the PGA Tour is where you want to be because it is a pure meritocracy. There's nothing stopping guys from playing in these elevated events. There's nothing stopping guys from getting in the PIP. You just play better. You work your ass off, you play better, and if you do that, you will get into these events."

Monahan agreed that there was a clear pathway for younger players to break into the upper echelon.

"Ultimately, to be a player that's having the greatest impact on the organization, it starts with your competitive success on the field of play," Monahan said. "When you have competitive success, obviously you're on television more, people are following you more, you all are telling more stories about these players, and you're becoming more known to fans, golf fans and sports fans and the general population."

Where will the new events be played?

Monahan said the tour was still working out some of the details surrounding those events. He said the elevated events would probably rotate through existing PGA Tour tournaments in the U.S.

"When we come back and announce what we're doing with those four events, where those events are being played, what the eligibility requirements are for, what field sizes are, these are the lot of the things that we're going to be working through over the next 45 to 60 days," Monahan said. "We'll be able to answer that uniformly."

With the four elevated events rotating through the other existing ones, such as the WM Phoenix Open or AT&T Bryon Nelson, those tournaments would have stronger fields than they've had in the past when top players skipped them.

"I think overall every single member will benefit from this, and I think the tour as a whole will," Jordan Spieth said. "I actually believe that the sponsors, and I would imagine pretty much all the tournaments will probably see a better field however many times it's going to happen."

How did the PGA Tour come up with all this money?

By introducing four additional elevated events for the 2023 season, the PGA Tour has now committed $99.8 million to increased purses for next season. The tour estimates that the four new elevated events will lead to approximately $46 million in increases alone, after it had previously pledged a total of $48.8 million to bump up the purses for the three FedEx Cup Playoff events, Sentry Tournament of Champions, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament, WGC-Dell Technology Match Play and The Players.

That doesn't even include the $100 million the tour pledged to double the money awarded through PIP in 2022 and 2023.

So, where is all of the money coming from? Jay Monahan said it's coming from three primary sources: increased revenue from the 2021-22 season, reserves and sponsors and partners.

"This year that we're in, the tour is having its strongest year in history of the PGA Tour and is performing well ahead of budget," Monahan said. "Secondly, the tour through the years has been very prudent in managing its finances and building reserves and being in a position to be able to invest in programs that are going to help the tour grow. That's what they're there for, and that's what we'll continue to use them for."

Back in February, when Phil Mickelson was still a member of the PGA Tour, he criticized the tour's "obnoxious greed" for, among other things, controlling players' media rights. While Mickelson might have had some valid points, the six-time major champion probably didn't go about airing his complaints the right way.

"As much as I probably don't want to give Phil any sort of credit at all, yeah, there were certain points that he was trying to make," Rory McIlroy said. "But there's a way to go about them. There's a way to collaborate. You get all the top players in the world together and you get them on the same page. You then go to the tour and you suggest ideas and you work together. This was pure collaboration."

Will the changes affect the PGA Tour's tax-exempt status?

Since the players-only meeting in Delaware, there had been much speculation about whether the PGA Tour would renounce its nonprofit status, which would have allowed it to generate an influx of cash to compete with LIV Golf. The PGA Tour operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)6 organization and transforming itself into a for-profit business might have cost it between $50 million and $75 million in taxes each year.

In a court filing in response to three LIV Golf players' federal antitrust lawsuit, the PGA Tour's lawyers wrote that 98% of its net profits are distributed to charities, players and tournaments each year.

"The 501(c)6 status and the integrity of that and all it does for us, that's always going to be a central fabric to who we are as an organization," Jay Monahan said.

Monahan said the tour might look to create for-profit subsidiaries, such as the one being formed by Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods in partnership with the PGA Tour. Woods and McIlroy plan to introduce a new tech-infused golf league, with players competing on three-man teams on a virtual course, in January 2024.

The PGA Tour's Signature Events Had Worthy Winners in 2024, But Still Need Some Work

It is nearly impossible for the PGA Tour and its signature events to deliver the type of outcome intended for these tournaments that are meant to enrich the players while bringing together as many of the best in the game as possible for the enjoyment of the fans.

Scottie Scheffler did his best to do his part.

Scheffler’s playoff victory over Tom Kim on Sunday at the Travelers Championship gave him four victories out of the eight signature events, which saw their first year in this format come to an end, with revisions surely to come.

These big-money, small-field events that were borne out of the need to compensate the best in the game at a higher level—and in five of the eight cases offered guaranteed money—have largely met their goal.

Not every tournament will be compelling, not every event will have a big-name winner.

But in seven of the eight signature events—albeit it four of them won by Scheffler—a previous major champion was the winner.

Chris Kirk, who captured the Sentry in January, was the only non-major winner to prevail. Wyndham Clark, who won the 2023 U.S. Open, captured the shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama won the Genesis Invitational.

After that it was all Scheffler (Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Memorial and Travelers) except for four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who won the Wells Fargo the week prior to the PGA Championship. Scheffler did not play that week. McIlroy skipped this week.

And therein lies one of the potential issues with the signature events—the schedule. In an effort to avoid isolating regular events between the biggest tournaments, the PGA Tour sought to make sure there was at least a run of two such smaller events preceding a signature event—one as a vehicle for qualification but also so a tournament such as the RBC Canadian wouldn’t be stuck between a signature event (the Memorial) and a major (the U.S. Open.)

And yet, that brought on its own problems. It means, for example, that players not in the signature events or the U.S. Open had no place to play the last three weeks.

It also put someone like Scheffler, who tied for 45th at the U.S. Open, in the position of having to decry winning at the Memorial because the event might have compromised his abilities at the major championship.

That issue has already been dealt with as the Memorial is moving to two weeks prior to the U.S. Open next year.

And the Tour has already said that going forward, signature events will have a minimum of 72 players.

Which leads to another discussion point. Why not more?

Why limit these events to so few players when you could easily justify a more robust field?

It’s been suggested that all of the signature events should have 100 players with a 36-hole cut. If the compensation issue is a problem, figure out a way to pay everyone who misses the cut.

That big of a field seems a non-starter so the Tour should at least assure 78 players, something easily accomplished via the current FedEx Cup points list, current-year Tour winners and even the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The Tour gives up its “everyman” mantra with these signature events and has upset many of the rank-and-file who are now competing in regular events that pay less than half of the $20 million purses and also significantly less FedEx Cup points (750 to the winner versus 500). At least let a few more of them into the big-time events and see if the schedule can’t be a bit more reasonable so as not to burden the best players.

“It’s been a lot,” said Collin Morikawa, who finished second to Scheffler at the Memorial and also has been a frequent contender recently. “I feel like this year has just felt a little bit more of a sprint, let's call it. But I think that's just because of the season, not having a fall portion or at least not having a fall portion that's counted towards this season.

“I think that's an adjustment, but I have nothing wrong with it. Every other sport they're playing every day, every few days. Granted, our weeks are a lot longer and, we get pretty drained as well, but a lot of these tournaments I would have played no matter what, wherever they were on the schedule, and you kind of work them in. So it kind of worked out in my favor where I wanted to play the week before a major, a lot of 'em lined up like that. So just kind of continue that.”

Bryson DeChambeau crammed a lot into the week following his U.S. Open victory, including visits to the Today show in New York along with various other appearances where he took the U.S. Open trophy.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , he took the trophy into the audience.

And then he brought it to Lower Broadway in Nashville in advance of the LIV Golf Nashville tournament, which started Friday and concluded Sunday.

By Saturday, DeChambeau was admittedly running out of energy, even if his golf had not fallen off.

“My brain is not fully functioning so I’m not able to speak coherently all the time,” he said. “But the fans have been fantastic. They’ve been brilliant. Very gracious to have them out there supporting me like that.”

Tyrrell Hatton proved too much on Sunday, winning his first LIV Golf event by six shots. DeChambeau tied for third, seven strokes back in what was a solid effort given the enormity of his victory a week ago and all that transpired.

It was his best finish in nine LIV events this year and only his second top five.

But he was tied for sixth at the Masters and second at the PGA Championship prior to his U.S. Open win.

“I’m impressed,” said Jon Rahm, when asked about the inevitable post-major hangover. “Especially taking into account that he went and did the whole New York news shows. I didn't do that. I played the week after (his 2023 Masters win) in Hilton Head and it was quite difficult and tiring.

“But we saw Scottie (Scheffler) win the week after (the Masters at the RBC Heritage) this year, and Bryson seems to be a guy who naturally has a lot of energy. I would never question him being able to perform.

“I think it becomes more a mental thing, right? Can you focus on still playing good golf even though you’ve accomplished something incredible? I think he’s in good enough shape physically that he can handle it, it’s just being able to do it mentally.

“I think one of the things that is never really talked about enough about players ... obviously like Tiger (Woods) or Jack (Nicklaus), is the fact that they were able to win multiple majors in a season consistently, and I don’t think most people understand how demanding that is mentally, just to get that done, the media obligations you have afterwards amongst all those things.

“It’s definitely impressive to see what some other players have been able to do.”

The last player to win two majors in the same year was Brooks Koepka (U.S. Open, PGA) in 2018. Jordan Spieth (Masters, U.S. Open) did it in 2015, and Rory McIlroy (British Open, PGA) did it in 2014. Prior to that, Padraig Harrington (British and PGA) was the last in 2008.

Woods won multiple majors in a year in 2000 (U.S. Open, British, PGA); 2002 (Masters, U.S. Open); 2005 (Masters, British) and 2006 (British, PGA).

Nicklaus won two majors in a year in 1963 (Masters, PGA), 1966 (Masters, British), 1972 (Masters, U.S. Open), 1975 (Masters, PGA) and 1980 (U.S. Open, PGA).

Arnold Palmer: American hero

Scottie Scheffler is on an amazing roll, having won his sixth tournament of the year on the PGA Tour and matching a feat not accomplished since Arnold Palmer in 1962: six victories prior to July 1. Tiger Woods never did that, nor did Jack Nicklaus.

But Scheffler has a little ways to go in order to match an interesting feat that Palmer accomplished at the Masters: he was in eight consecutive green jacket ceremonies from 1958 through 1965.

Think about it: Arnie won the Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964. That made him part of giving the jacket to the winner the following year: to Art Wall in 1959, Gary Player in 1961, Jack Nicklaus in 1963 and Nicklaus again in 1965.

Martin Davis highlights this and many other aspects of Palmer’s life and career in his large book called Arnold Palmer: American Hero . Stripped across two pages are photos of Palmer from each of those Masters ceremonies.

This is the seventh such book Davis has done in a large 11-by-14-inch format that is filled with essays and photos, some never seen before. The book weighs eight pounds and follows other books he’s done in similar fashion on Ben Hogan (two), Byron Nelson, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and the Ryder Cup.

“We always wanted to do this and I thought it just was the wrong time,” said Davis of a book on Palmer, who died in 2016. “This just seemed like the right time while people still remember him fondly.

“What we do with these books are what I would call love stories. There’s no heavy criticism. They’ve all been formatted the same way, with essays on different aspects of their lives.”

Among them were stories written by players such as Gary Player, Nancy Lopez and Peter Jacobsen, Palmer’s good friend and former LPGA commissioner Charlie Mecham and by his longtime assistant and former newspaper writer “Doc” Giffin, who worked for Palmer for more than 50 years.

In all, there are more than 20 essays in 272 pages with more than 300 photos, which include an analysis of his swing and his putting.

“One of the joys of the book is all the photos. Where do you find them?” Davis said. “A lot of them you’ve seen before, like throwing his hat in the air at the ’60 (U.S.) Open (at Cherry Hills) when he won. There’s a lot of them that have never been published and we probably looked at more than 2,500 photos. And we try to set ourselves apart with very high production values.”

Davis said he worked on the book for more than four years and the end product is chock full of anything and everything related to Palmer’s golf and life.

Among the neat aspects is a section on Palmer’s letter-writing habit that he got into, sending a note of congratulations after players won various events. There’s the telegram he sent Jack Nicklaus after the Golden Bear won the 1986 Masters at age 46 that offered congratulations and also said: “Do you think there’s hope for a 56-year-old?”

One that is particularly poignant was written in September 2016 and addressed to Paul Broadhurst, who Palmer was congratulating on Broadhurst's senior victory at Pebble Beach and sent to his home in the United Kingdom. It was dated just six days prior to Palmer’s death.

A few more things

Scottie Scheffler became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six times on the PGA Tour prior to July 1. The win at the Travelers Championship gives him victories at the Masters, the Players and four signature events. He’s now won 12 times in his PGA Tour career, all since the start of 2022. He is also the first player with six wins in a season since Tiger Woods in 2009. Scheffler will take a few weeks off prior to the British Open. He is not planning to play the Scottish Open the week prior as he did last year. After that it’s the Olympics and then the FedEx Cup playoffs. He has earned more than $27.6 million in prize money this year, surpassing the $21 million record he set in 2021. LIV Golf has a few weeks off before its next event in Spain at Valderamma. That is the week prior to the British Open. Its U.K. event follows the British. Dustin Johnson turned 40 on Saturday but there wasn’t much to celebrate regarding his golf. His 72–70–75 weekend in Nashville saw him post his worst LIV Golf finish in 29 individual events with a tie for 51st. His previous worst was 37th last year in the season-opening event in Mexico when he was coming off an injury. Johnson, a two-time major champion, has missed the cut in three of his last four majors and his best this year is a tie for 43rd at the PGA. Tom Hoge and Christiaan Bezuidenhout earned spots in the British Open via the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings after the Travelers at 18th and 20th, respectively. The exemption is for anyone in the top 20 not already exempt, up to five players.
