" Staff is very courteous. Great food. Excellent presentation of food. Their onion and steak, baked chicken and grilled breast of chicken are very tasty and delicious. Totally recommend Brisa Del Cibao if you want to experience an original Dominican quality of food. "

" I am very picky about Spanish food and I can truly say their pollo guisado was amazing. The crackling chicken, according to my daughter, was off the hook. Will definitely order from here again, curious about their other dishes. "

Cielito Astoria gives Sinaloan food its biggest stage yet in NYC

Over the last decade, New York City has become rich in regional Mexican fare. One of the most recent cuisines to arrive was that of Sinaloa, a state that lies across the Gulf of California from the Baja peninsula. Some of the cuisine’s signature dishes are also found in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and parts of West Texas, representing food associated with the Sonoran Desert, which straddles the border between the United States and Mexico.

NYC’s latest showcase of Sinaloan food is Cielito Astoria, a divey but elegant cocktail lounge that opened last summer on busy 36th Avenue. Outlined in blue neon that glows late into the night, it boasts a foliage-bedecked bench where couples like taking pictures, and a decorative motif featuring skeletons, red roses, and brass rails inside. Sinaloan banda music from outfits like Grupo Firme and Grupo Diez 4tro thrumps from an unseen sound system. Alex Arias, the manager and a veteran restaurateur, and Sinaloan chef América Rodriguez have concocted the broadest menu of Sinaloan food the city has yet seen.

A ranch style corner bar glows blue in the twilight sky.

Many of these dishes first hit Queens in November 2017 under the tracks of the 7 train in the little square formed by Roosevelt and Elmhurst avenues. Taqueria Sinaloense had a taco counter in the window up front, and a huge brown map of Mexico with the state of Sinaloa popping out in green spreading across one wall.

Standards of Sinaloan cuisine offered there included chilorio (pork simmered in chile sauce till it falls apart, then fried a second time in lard) and machaca (dried beef often scrambled with eggs). It also featured other Sinaloan dishes then relatively unique to New York, including beef birria served as a consomé, and a pair of tacos of crunchy grasshoppers and poached shrimp laved in oil.

A restaurant with a red awning emblazoned Taqueria Sinaloense.

The owner, Elvía Castelán, was a native of Puebla also involved in Roosevelt Avenue’s Tacos Veloz chain. But her family also had roots in Sinaloa, and she had always wanted to open a restaurant featuring the state’s unique food. Castelán hired América Rodriguez as chef, who hailed from the town of El Rosario in southern Sinaloa. She’d worked in the legal profession and never cooked in a professional kitchen, but Rodriguez did inherit a slew of recipes from her mother.

At first, Taqueria Sinaloense had trouble attracting customers, since chilorio, birria, and machaca were virtually unknown in New York City at the time, and the smattering of Pueblan dishes offered (huaraches, al pastor tacos, and tacos placeros) were already available at dozens of other restaurants, carts, and window taquerias in the immediate vicinity. The place closed not quite a year later.

By early 2020, América Rodriguez reappeared at Mi Dulce Mexico , a bright corner panaderia in North Corona. In addition to its colorful display of pan dulce in a bank of plastic cases, it mounted an adjacent steam table with taco fixings. But a black bulletin board on one wall displayed colorful dayglo tags with daily specials — an ever-changing assortment of dishes concocted by Rodriguez. The now-familiar chilorio, porky beans, and machaca with eggs on a platter with rice or in a taco were all included, but she had added further items, not only from Sinaloa but from Baja and Tijuana, too.

Many plates skewed on a long table, a plate of green shrimp aguachile foremost and held aloft.

The aguachiles — giant oblong platters of shrimp awash in a piquant red or green salsa and shingled with avocado slices — were the most spectacular new offering, but there were also classic Bajan fried-fish tacos, now available all over town. And a version of Tijuana beef birria, a dish that had recently exploded in popularity via Birria-Landia, emphasized the consomé, serving it with a stack of already dipped tortillas on the side for a DIY taco feast.

This edition of Mi Dulce was sadly short lived, and Rodriquez departed a few weeks later. She was gone from the food scene for a year before she reappeared again, if only briefly, at Cielito Astoria. There she provided recipes and kitchen guidance for Arias, who grew up in the Sinaloan capital of Culiacán. He has partial interest in other restaurants serving Mexican and Peruvian food — and indeed there are a few Andean touches on the menu at Cielito, such as a giant grilled octopus tentacle served with chorizo aioli, minted pistachio sauce, and acai berry mayo.

In one of two outdoor pavilions, a friend and I enjoyed a Mazatlan-style red aguachile ($21) featuring shrimp and octopus served in a volcano-stone molcajete with slices of cucumber, avocado, and lightly pickled purple onions. It was one of four ceviches available, including another of mixed seafood called levanta muertos (“zombie animator,” $22) that was much spicier, advertised as an aphrodisiac akin to Peruvian leche de tigre.

A black mortar with ceviche inside and cucumbers and avocado slices on top.

Next arrived chilorio tacos ($14), three to an order on flour tortillas with an incendiary green salsa on the side. Here, in observance of the taco format, the porky beans had been slathered on the tortillas before the chilorio was profusely applied, combining two dishes usually separated, though the beans got lost in the mix of flavors.

The machaca tacos ($15), the shredded meat interspersed with a micro-scramble of eggs, was another highlight, an abstract painting in brown flecked with red tomatoes and bright yellow eggs, while the birria service was perfection itself — really quesabirria, since the flour tortillas came dripping with melted white cheese. But there were other Sinaloan antojitos, too, such as tacos gobernador (shrimp with green chiles, guacamole, and cheese) and tacos canasta (“basket tacos” coated with oil as a preservative, so they may be taken on a picnic or sold from a basket on the beach).

Presenting Sinaloan food in a cocktail lounge has its advantages, as opposed to the eat-and-run ambiance of a taqueria or panaderia. The cocktails, 19 in number, mainly deploy tequila and mezcal. Of the ones I tried, my favorite was the mezcalita de tepache ($17), the latter term referring to a beverage made from fermented pineapple skins and brown sugar sold by street vendors in northern Mexico. Here it makes an excellent cocktail, and the bartender might give you a small snifter of straight-up tepache on the side as a chaser — definitely something you’re not likely to get in a taqueria, and a bright contrast to the earthier flavors of chilorio and machaca.

Two glasses, one with a cocktail and the other with a yellowish wine.

About Foodscapes

Access to affordable and nutritious food is one of the cornerstones of good health. Without this, individuals—and communities—are at a higher risk of food insecurity and serious chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. To improve the health of New Yorkers, we must recognize that each neighborhood has a distinct food environment.

These Foodscape reports provide a community-level snapshot of a community’s food environment, including data on healthy and unhealthy food consumption, food access, and diet-related diseases. Additionally, the reports detail a comprehensive guide of the many food-related resources available to residents within their neighborhoods to support them in eating healthier. The Hunter College New York City Food Policy Center has compiled this information from various sources, presenting it in a user-friendly format to help NYC residents and communities better understand their local foodscapes.

The NYC Foodscape Reports were published in 2020 and are continually updated every six months. Data in the Foodscape Reports is collected from multiple primary sources to ensure the most up-to-date statistics for each indicator. Learn more about organizations and resources highlighted in the Foodscape Reports by visiting the Center’s Neighborhood Food Resource Guides as well as the Food Policy and Practice Database . Together, these three resources provide a comprehensive food-related guide to each New York City neighborhood.

Circling the Unisphere, a Borough’s Backyard

cibao travel corona queens

By Corey Kilgannon

  • Aug. 25, 2011

HERE is a typical scene for a newcomer to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park , in Queens.

You’re sitting on a bench mesmerized by the Unisphere sculpture — the glittering globe that appears to levitate on its ring of geyser fountains — and then there is a woman pushing a baby carriage toward you, cooing in singsong Spanish.

She pulls up, and you realize that she’s not serenading any baby. She’s hawking sliced mangoes — discreetly, mind you, because she’s not a licensed vendor. And in the feeding tray of this stroller-pushcart, she’s packing the works: salt, lime, chili powder and hot sauce.

You go with it and buy a bag for $3 and meditate on this stealth stroller trick while watching dozens of children frolicking in the Unisphere fountains, the little ones in their underwear, in a madcap, gushing sprinkler party.

You conclude that you’re not in the most heavily regimented and regulated of city parks, a far cry from its very carefully maintained and patrolled Manhattan cousins like Central Park and the High Line.

You’re in Queens now, pal, borough of immigrants. And this park, site of both the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs but faded since those heady days , is now their backyard. Sprawling south from CitiField, it lies within walking distance for the Chinese of Flushing, the Mexicans and Ecuadoreans of Corona, the Colombians of Jackson Heights.

Things happen here in their own informal way, and this is what makes an overlooked park one of New York City’s glorious public spaces. At 1,255 acres, it is the second-largest public park in the city, after Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx.

It does enjoy a glimmer of attention each year when the United States Open tennis tournament is held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Although the tournament, which this year runs from Monday through Sept. 11, is heralded as a global event, many fans never glimpse the real multiculturalism of the park, an international display much like, well, the World’s Fair itself.

“There is no other park in the world where you can get all these different people from different countries coming together in one place,” said Gilberto Gil, who goes to the park on weekends to watch the soccer team he sponsors, in a men’s league of Colombian immigrants.

The countries are no longer represented by exhibits in booths and pavilions, as they were at the World’s Fairs, but rather in the sports leagues and the food vendors, which can be licensed carts or fly-by-night gas grills propped on park benches. One recent weekend a woman was selling empanadas out of a shopping cart to the skateboarders at a popular, newish skate park near the base of the decaying New York State Pavilion . And that’s another thing about the park. Nearly everything that is happening is happening in the shadow of some surreal-looking World’s Fair remnant. The neglected monuments give the park a science-fiction feel and provide an interesting crosscurrent to the bustle of the park as a haven for hard-working immigrants at play.

For example, near the base of the “Rocket Thrower” statue, along the line of reflecting pools emanating out from the Unisphere, groups of Latino men race their high-performance miniature cars by remote control, making for a full-on smack-up derby that attracts many spectators and has its own pit crews. At the Queens Zoo, by the park’s western edge, bison graze at the foot of the strange-looking Terrace on the Park banquet hall. And in those reflecting pools — once grand fountains, now dry — soccer games hold sway.

Looming over the treetops near the Grand Central Parkway and presiding over all are the Jetsons-era saucers of the New York State Pavilion, a massive space-age relic designed by Philip Johnson and reaching 226 feet high.

On weeknights and weekend mornings, the rhythm of the park is the same: the people arrive, the nets are unpacked and set up, and the soccer and volleyball games commence, in any given clearing, often with extended families hunkered down nearby for a long day’s picnic.

There are teams aligned with the cities and towns of home countries. You might get a game of Dominican softball on the grassy diamonds along the park’s western portion that pits men from Santiago against those from El Cibao.

On weekends, the soccer players arrive together by country, mostly Latin and South American. One recent Saturday, Mr. Gil’s team, composed mostly of players from his hometown, Medellín, faced the team hailing from Pereira, Colombia. Mr. Gil, who owns a refrigeration company in Brooklyn, grimaced and exulted with every play.

“I’ve had two heart attacks already,” he said. “My wife begs me to give it up, but I can’t.” After the game, he called over one of his players, Eduardo Ortiz, 33, a former professional player in Ecuador, now living in New York. Like some other team sponsors, Mr. Gil recruits South American players and sets them up with good jobs in New York to get them on his team.

South Asians and West Indians, dressed in whites, have their cricket games on either side of the expressway. Groups of young Asian adults from Flushing and Bayside favor nighttime golf, or miniature golf, under the lights at the Flushing Meadows Pitch & Putt course, near the tennis center. The course is in good shape and has a snack bar that dispenses $10 pitchers of icy Molson to drink at the picnic tables overlooking the first tee.

Food is a theme. The Ecuadoreans flock to the two main licensed carts near Industry Pond and the artificial-turf soccer fields for arepas and cheese-topped fried bananas. You can buy a $9 shrimp ceviche marinated in lime, or succulent roast pork with rice and beans and salad for $8, which can really feed two people. The people and fare run the gamut. I have seen women in bowler hats and the traditional dress of the Andes cooking a guinea pig dish known as cuy on sticks over hot coals.

The Colombian men playing soccer buy their lunch from two women, Colombian immigrants, who set up a gas grill on a folding table near the field and grill steaks — $7 a platter — and charge $1.50 for empanadas made at home.

Littering can be a problem on busy weekends, and you can go for long stretches without seeing park workers or police officers. There are spots where the ground has become a veritable mosaic of embedded Heineken and Corona bottle caps.

During the tennis tournament parts of the park are considerably spruced up, with more police presence. For years the tournament weeks were really the only time you could enjoy seeing the Unisphere fountains turned on all day — they were too leaky to run regularly — but after a $2 million rehabilitation last year they have been on most of the summer. Tournament time also means that some sections of the park are used for parking and staging areas for limos, buses and official vehicles.

The park has attractions besides people-watching: several playgrounds, a carousel, the zoo, the New York Hall of Science, an indoor Olympic-size pool and skating rink, a skate park. Austin Kincaid, 28, from Brooklyn, who was using in-line skates at the skate park, listed his favorite things about Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, including the inexpensive food, the scarcity of law enforcement officers and “all this spaceship-looking stuff” from the World’s Fair.

“I’m sure most people in this park have no idea what all this spaced-out stuff is,” he said. “I think it looks great. It gives the park character.”

Peso Pluma powered through his performance at the 2024 Governors Ball .

The Mexican superstar, 24, headlined the music festival on Sunday, June 9 where he played an hour-long set.

“¡Arriba México, putos!   How y’all doing, New York? Are you ready to have a f---ing corrido night?” Peso greeted the crowd.

Marleen Moise/Getty

During the set, he enlisted Jasiel Nuñez to perform the hit “Rosa Pastel," as well as Rich the Kid for “Gimme a Second.” Additionally, he played tracks like “Ella Baila Sola,” “PRC” and “La Bebe,” and debuted his single “La Durango."

According to the outlet, Peso made a misstep during his set, but didn't exactly react. Despite a crew member bringing him a chair, he ultimately chose to power on without it, balancing on one foot.

“If I have it fractured, I don’t give a s--- because you all deserve a grand show!” he told the audience.

On Monday, June 10, Peso confirmed his injury and shared his excitement for his performance on Instagram .

"broken foot ? IDGAF! … THANKS NEW YORK 🗽 YALL ENERGY WAS INSANE ! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 LOS AMOOOOOO!" "Lagunas" captioned the post.

Peso also shared an Instagram carousel from the festival.

In the first photo, he can be seen wearing his stage outfit — a black Celine mesh hoodie with silver chains — and in the second snap, he can be seen shaking hands with Rich, who is in a white hoodie and chain jewelry. In the third and fourth images, Peso is performing onstage at the Governor's Ball. The fifth image features a close-up of his foot in a brace-like wrap during his set, while the final two snaps feature the musician in a white tank on stage.

In April, the "Por las Noches" singer took the main stage at Coachella and put on a grand performance with elaborate set designs and dozens of backup dancers.

During his set, Peso brought stars like  Anitta ,  Becky G  and Eslabon Armado as surprise guests.

"I think a lot of people didn't know what to expect and I love that we took them all by surprise with our creativity and visuals," he told PEOPLE of the performance. "I wanted to take fans on a journey, tell a story. Showing them the path from  Genesis  moving into  Éxodo , this was just an introduction to what’s coming next."

Peso added: "It was really special to have all of the guests come out during weekend one and weekend two because each song is really special to me. It’s part of Peso Pluma's journey and without them it wouldn’t be the same. It's a huge win for the culture but also for music."

Three big stages in use over three consecutive days in Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park are welcoming hitmaking headliners like Post Malone , Rauw Alejandro , The Killers, 21 Savage, SZA and Peso Pluma. On night one, Post Malone (pictured in the gallery of photos below) offered all the hits , and he’s got a lot of them — even if he kept his introduction humble enough: “My name is Austin Richard Post, and I’m here to play some s—ty songs and get a little bit f—ed up while we do it.”

Rauw Alejandro (also pictured in the below photos) delivered a performance charged with boundless energy and dance moves, one that tied in with his roots to the city.

“I’ve always had a special connection to this city,” the Puerto Rican star said. “My dad was born in Brooklyn. It’s a meeting point for many cultures. Many of us left our country in search of opportunities and dreams. And I feel that here you can fulfill all the dreams that you want to do in life. In my case, a dream is being fulfilled by sharing it here with all of you, a dream that I am living today, thanks to all of you who have supported me since day one.”

Some of the best photos from the Governors Ball lineup so far include moments on stage with Flo, Farruko, Alex G, Yung Gravy, Dominic Fike and more.

Take a look at the best photos from 2024’s Governors Ball, as the festival continues in NYC throughout the weekend.

Governors Ball and World’s Fair Anniversary set to light up Flushing Meadows Corona Park this June

S ummer fun-seekers are in for a treat at Flushing Meadows Corona Park this summer, starting with two major events in June: the return of the Governors Ball Music Festival and the 60th-anniversary celebration of the 1964-65 World’s Fair.

The Governors Ball, a standout music festival in New York, kicks off from June 7 to June 9 with an impressive lineup including Post Malone, 21 Savage, Carly Rae Jepsen, SZA, and The Killers.

Now in its 14th year—and its second year at this iconic park—the festival will host more than 60 bands across three stages over three days.

“I’m thrilled to welcome everyone back to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for this year’s Governor’s Ball,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.

In 2023, attendees of the festival generously contributed over $52,000 in donations through their ticket purchases. Additionally, over 6,000 volunteers participated in the Gov Ball Gives Back initiative to help support local non-profit organizations.

Richards highlighted the economic boost the festival brings to Queens and its partnership with local nonprofits such as Chhaya, the Elmhurst/Corona Recovery Collective, and the Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park. These partnerships help empower local food vendors and community groups.

Council Member Shekar Krishnan, who represents Jackson Heights and Elmhurst and is chair of the Committee on Parks and Recreation, said the 60th-anniversary celebration of the World’s Fair and the return of the Governors Ball will put the spotlight on the crown jewel of Queens Parks. “When you go there any day, you’ll see children playing in the fountain at the Unisphere, you’ll see people playing soccer, cricket, immigrants from all over the world.”

Krishnan also noted that NYC Parks implemented new rules last year to manage multi-day events effectively and ensure they do not conflict with other major events, such as New York Mets games or the U.S. Open.

“It’s always my biggest concern to make sure that the park is well maintained and gets the services that it needs,” Krishnan told QNS. “So I’m hopeful that the return of Governors Ball this year is that everyone will work together to ensure that the park is well maintained and accessible for all New Yorkers, even for those who are not Queens residents.”

For those interested in the park’s rich history, The Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park is conducting history walks , with the first tour scheduled for June 15. This tour will explore how the Fair shaped Queens’ history.

The 1964-65 World’s Fair itself was a monumental event. It featured 140 pavilions and 110 restaurants from over 80 nations and attracted over 51 million visitors. Promotional films such as “Great Fair, Great Fun” produced by the Hearst Movietone Group and others were shown around the globe, making Queens a viable destination for immigrants,  particularly from Asia and Latin America.

The legacy of the World’s Fair lives on, enhancing Queens’ reputation as the World’s Borough—a hub of global linguistic diversity with over 800 languages spoken.

Taryn Sacramone, Executive Director of the Queens Theatre, reflected on the fair’s lasting impact: “The 1964-65 World’s Fair was magnetic, international, and inspiring — sparking the imaginations of everyone who attended.” The Queens Theatre continues this legacy with THEATERAMA! , a series of events through October, including a special tribute to jazz legend and Queens resident Louis Armstrong on June 30, and a screening of the documentary “Modern Ruin” on July 14.

Together, these events not only celebrate the park’s historical significance but also promise a summer filled with cultural enrichment and community engagement.

A 14-year-old boy was injured Sunday in a harrowing subway surfing incident in Queens — becoming the latest young victim of the dangerous trend.

The teenager was riding atop a southbound 7 train when his head struck a beam as the train pulled into the 111th Street Station just before 4:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

The boy was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, cops said.

7 Train

The Corona 7 train station is above ground but has an overhang that stretches across the tracks, leaving about a foot of space between the beams and the top of the train roof.

The teen’s injury is the latest in a string of often fatal incidents linked to the dangerous stunt across the city.

Subway surfing has become increasingly common as teens seek to emulate the daredevil behavior widely shared on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, officials said.

MTA statistics show there were 450 reports of people riding outside of trains, including on top of them, during the first six months of 2023 — a figure up sharply from 262 reported over the same time period in 2019.

Additional reporting by Juan Gonzalez.
