Dahilayan Adventure Park made its claim to fame when it started to operate the 840-meter dual zipline (the longest dual zipline in Asia at the time). The starting point soars at a height of 4,700 feet and while zipping, you can get a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the surrounding forest. The adventure park continues to offer a growing number of exhilarating attractions like the Razorback Mountain Coaster (Philippines’ first alpine coaster), the Skytower Base Jump (the highest in the country), the Flying Lizard Canopy Glider, and more. If you want to take it more relaxed, there are nature trails where you can enjoy the scenic views through the pine-covered Dahilayan Forest.

How to go :

The nearest airport is Laguindingan International Airport, located near the boundary of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. From the city center of Cagayan de Oro, the 51km drive to Dahilayan Adventure Park takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. By public transport, you can catch a jeep or shuttle (van) to the jump-off point in Camp Phillips. From there, a “habal-habal” (motorcycle taxi) can take you to Dahilayan Adventure Park.

The iconic pyramid-shaped chapel (designed by Leandro Locsin) is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Bukidnon. Home of the Benedictine monks, the Monastery of the Transfiguration is a popular destination for people seeking a place of peace, guidance, and prayer. The monastery is also famous for its Monks Blend Coffee, which can be bought at the on-site gift shop along with other locally-produced food, souvenirs, and religious items.

The 5km ride from Malaybalay City Center takes less than 15 minutes.

3. Del Monte Pineapple Plantation

It’s worth a try because it comes from the world-famous Wagyu cattle, fed and fattened with Del Monte pineapple pulp bringing you quality steak that is tender and juicy with a unique buttery taste. The clubhouse has an al fresco dining area where you can get a nice view of the pine trees and well-maintained greens of the 18-hole golf course. The Del Monte Clubhouse Golf Course and Country Club was established in 1928.

Ereccion de Pueblo, literally translated as “creation of the town” is an eye-catching golden monument located in Plaza Rizal Park (Malaybalay City Plaza). It depicts the agreement between the Spanish colonizers and the local leaders that took place on June 15, 1877.

Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park is a nature reserve and protected area declared as an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2009. It is home to Mt. Dulang-Dulang, the Philippines’ 2nd highest mountain, and Mt. Kitanglad, the 4th highest. The park is famous for its enchanting mossy forests. It hosts rare and endemic species including the Philippine Eagle, Philippine Tarsier, and Rafflesia schadenbergiana, the second largest flower in the world. There are various trails for hikers from day trips to the multi-day “Dulang-Dulang to Kitanglad traverse,” one of the most challenging hikes in the country

Hi. Hope all is well with you and your family. Please assist. How do I tour Cagayan and then go beyond – Iligan, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental and Lanao Del Norte. Maybe if I choose 2 only after Cagayan, which 2 are really worth it? Yung short ferry boat rides lang to and from each other. Thanks.

Hi jet, I suggest combining a tour of Iligan and Bukidnon, in addition to Cagayan de Oro. Both places are accessible by car from Cagayan de Oro. In Iligan, you can visit the waterfalls & in Bukidnon, you can visit Dahilayan Park & the pineapple plantation. If you want to go to the beach, then visit Camiguin Island.

Behold Bukidnon Tourist Spot

1. mount dulang-dulang.

Mount Dulang-Dulang is the second-highest mountain in the Philippines, rising to more than 2,938 meters above sea level. It boasts one of the country’s most impressive forests, such as enchanting mossy forests.

The indigenous people here consider it sacred. That’s why they always perform rituals and prayers before allowing visitors to trek it. It’s a way for them to appease the gods and ask them for blessings and protection throughout the hike.

Along the way, you’ll glimpse an incredible variety of flora and fauna. If you chance on the mighty Philippine Eagle hovering around, you’re one lucky hiker. It is one of the top Bukidnon tourist spots. The local authorities, including many environmental groups, have been campaigning for the mountain’s preservation.

2. Mindamora Falls/Limunsudan Falls

Mindamora Falls/Limunsudan Falls measures more than 870 feet high, making it one of the highest waterfalls in the Philippines. The first cascade alone is higher than the famous Pagsanjan Falls. It is a two-tier waterfall cascading on the face of dramatic cliffs.

The indigenous tribes living near the waterfalls consider it sacred, thus, protecting it from commercial exploitation. To reach the base of the falls, one needs to hike for two hours on dense forest trails. Enjoy the sceneries along the way so you can glimpse wildlife species like birds.

The trek may be exhausting but you can easily experience relief by bathing in the refreshing waters of Limunsudan Falls.

3. Mount Kitanglad

The mountain also teams with endemic biodiversity, including the critically-endangered Philippine monkey-eating Eagle. It also has stunning mossy forests, a spectacular sunrise view, and an occasional sea of clouds.

Mindamora “Bayug” Falls, also called Limunsudan Falls, is a two-tiered waterfall on the border between Talakag, Bukidnon, and Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. It is the second-highest waterfall, after Aliwagwag Falls, in Cateel, Davao Oriental. This falls is also one of the best tourist spots in Bukidnon. You can see the stream at the base of Limunsudan Falls up close. It has a green basin that flows down a stream filled with big rocks when the weather is good. Basalt columns make up the cliff’s edge hanging over the stream.

The Bemwa Farm is known for its fresh food and giving customers a unique chance to learn about farming. On the way to the farm, you drive through Buda, which is a part of Davao City where the weather changes from hot and humid to cool and dry. 

Bemwa farm has a lot to offer its visitors, like a place to rest, take pictures, and fill up fresh vegetables from their garden. We don’t have to go to Baguio City just to pick strawberries. The park features a campsite with a swimming pool, a large nature forest, rolling hills, and waterfalls that you can visit in a day (namely, Gantungan Falls , Natigbasan Falls , Dila Falls , and Makabayot Falls ). The entrance fee is inexpensive, so you can enjoy the many activities here without breaking the bank… or if you prefer, you can just spend your time strolling amidst the trees or soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.

Cedar Park is a great day tour destination in Bukidnon and also a good side trip after Panimahawa Ridge.

Bukidnon is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Mindanao — including Alalum Falls.

The captivating waterfall stands about 45 meters high, its gushing waters creating a mesmerizing curtain against the lush backdrop. Its surrounding greenery makes it picture perfect, a perfect stopover when you need a quick nature trip.

Alalum Falls is notably visible from Sayre Highway in the town of Sumilao, where a viewdeck and a small café stands. A short trek leads to the cascade’s base where a deep pool awaits. Although it is not ideal for swimming, it’s still worth seeing the waterfall’s beauty up-close.

Although it is one of the most accessible waterfalls in Bukidnon, few people outside Bukidnon are aware of its existence. So if you’re coming here from Cagayan de Oro, make sure to include this tourist spot as a side tour in your itinerary.

Another popular day hike in Bukidnon  is Mount Capistrano, known for its limestone rocky peak and views of the surrounding Basakan Area rice fields and other mountain ranges.

Although the hike takes only 2 hours, the trail is challenging. Hikers are advised to be physically fit before embarking on a trip to get here.

Bukidnon has several caves perfect  for spelunking, and one that stands out is Blue Water Cave in the town of Quezon.

As its name suggests, this underground river system is known for its enchantingly blue and crystal-clear waters, which flow out to Pulangui River.  The water is cool and perfect for a refreshing swim especially in the summer.

There is no entrance fee to the cave, but it’s recommend to get a local guide to help you navigate the area. The cave itself can be accessed by climbing down a series of boulders. It’s recommended to go here during the summer months, as  the current can get strong on rainy days.

One of the best things to do in Bukidnon is attending the Kaamulan Festival. This annual gathering is a rich cultural spectacle that showcases the traditions of the seven indigenous tribes of Bukidnon.

Held between February and March at the Kaamulan Nature Park , this festival is a visual feast of colorful tribal costumes, rhythmic dance performances, and ethnic music. The locals also perform a reenactment of their ancient rituals, which can offer you the opportunity to learn more and connect with their culture and tradition.

3. Mount Kitanglad

Mount Kitanglad marks the fourth highest mountain in the Philippines at 2,899 meters. This protected natural park is also home to various endemic plants and animals like the Rafflesia and the Philippine Eagle.

There are bunkhouses and cell towers at the peak, making the trails going up as well-established. Even so, beginners may still find it a challenging climb.

4. Mount Dulang Dulang

If Mount Kitanglad doesn’t excite you, try the more challenging Mount Dulang Dulang.

Mount Dulang Dulang is the highest peak in Bukidnon, reaching 2,938 meters and the second-highest in the Philippines, next to Mount Apo.

Like Mount Apo and Pulag, Mount Dulang Dulang is also home to ethnic tribes. With the rights given to the Talaandig tribe, mountaineers should abide by the local’s traditional ritual before their climb.

The lodges in the farm are still being created so we should watch out for those.

To get to the Hobbit Houses. You have to get a bus to Malaybalay terminal. From here ride a multicab going to Casisang Central School and get a Habal habal to the final destination.

10. CROSSING ATUGAN BRIDGE

Atugan Bridge is one of the highest bridges in the Philippines and the highest in Bukidnon with 64.5 meters. Atugan Bridge crosses the Atugan Canyon along Atugan River and is used for vehicles going to Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

11. RAFFLESIA FLOWER

Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world and you can find in Baungon Bukidnon. You can see gigantic natural flowers. Apart from Rafflesia you can see the Amorphophallus Paeoniifolius which is also so unsual.

They celebrate the culture and tradition of the seven ethnic tribal groups: Bukidnon, Higaonon, Talaandig, Manobo, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon and Umayamnon that originally inhabit the province.

It’s the only authentic ethnic festival in the Philippines. If you have the opportunity to visit Bukidnon on these dates is one of the things to do in Bukidnon that you cant miss it.

20. ERECCION DE PUEBLO

Ereccion de Pueblo is located in Malaybalay City Plaza. Ereccion de Pueblo shows the negotiation between the Spaniards Colonizers and Native Leaders such that took place on 15th of June 15 in 1877.

21. MONASTERY OF TRANSFIGURATION

Monastery of Transfiguration is lcoated in Malaybalay City and you can’t miss it visiting Bukidnon tourist spots. The monastery is maintained and sustained by the monks. You can try their coffee and buy souvenirs. There is no entrance fee for Monastery of Transfiguration.

“I never thought I would love the province of Bukidnon” That’s the first thing that comes to mind after visiting my 61st province in the Philippines. You might rarely see people sharing Bukidnon travel guide or story. I believe that it is still not yet on the radar of many travelers, but once you get here, you will look forward to seeing it again.

Located in the highlands of the Philippines’ Northern region, Bukidnon offers a year-round refreshing cool climate. If you love the vibes of Baguio or the Mountain province in the northern part of Luzon in the Philippines. Consider a trip to Bukidnon to enjoy its chill vibe. I promise that the view and experience will not disappoint you.

Bukidnon is famous for being the home of one of the World’s biggest pineapple plantations; its breathtaking mountain ranges remind me of my trip to Kalinga from Bontoc in the Mountain province. The province has a vast plantation of fruits and trees which I enjoyed seeing as I travelled from Davao to Malaybalay.

How to get to Bukidnon

No commercial flights are going directly to the province of Bukidnon. The nearest airport is the Laguindingan Airport in Cagayan de Oro City, catering to domestic flights from Manila and Cebu. From Cagayan de Oro City , a journey by land must be taken to reach Bukidnon.

Taking the bus is one of the convenient ways to reach Bukidnon by land. From CDO Agora bus terminal, you may get to Malaybalay in approximately one hour and a half of land travel. The capital city of Bukidnon could also be reached from Davao City from the Ecoland Bus terminal. This is the route that I took to Bukidnon. Travel time was around 5 hours, and the fare was P460 or $8.

What to see in Bukidnon

• Dahilayan Adventure Park & Pine Forest  is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Bukidnon, but due to a conflict in my schedule and their rooms were already fully booked during my trip, I was unable to visit. Their fame started when they operated the 840-meter dual zipline claiming to be the longest dual zipline in Asia at some time.

• Monastery of the Transfiguration  is an iconic pyramid-shaped chapel designed by Leandro Locsin—the architect behind the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Folk Arts Theater. This is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Bukidnon.
• Del Monte Pineapple Plantation  – home of one of the most extensive pineapple plantations in the World.
• Mt Dulang-Dulang  – You probably saw that magical mossy forest in Mindanao on your IG or FB feed at some point. Most likely, it’s the Mt. Dulang-Dulang, popularly known as D2 for mountaineers; it is the second-highest mountain in the Philippines and possesses one of the most impressive forests in the country.

• Panimahawa Ridge – For those planning to trek in Bukidnon, this marvellous landscape is something you shouldn’t miss from your Bukidnon tourist spots list.

Where to stay in Bukidnon

I’m not a mountain person since I spend most of my travel outside Manila on the beach, but my camping experience in Bukidnon is probably one of my most unforgettable experiences in Mindanao. Looking for a nice place to stay in Bukidnon was challenging as only a few were available to book online.

I only have one goal in looking for accommodation on this trip. I just want a place where I can have a mental break. A place where I can be disconnected, surrounded by nature, and quiet.

I kept browsing accommodations online until I decided to booked my stay at  Pine Ridge Bukidnon . I was hesitant to book it since it’s just a simple tent accommodation and I can’t remember the last time I slept in a tent. The place doesn’t have electricity, no signal, no restaurant, and just a shared toilet without a heater.

For P2,200 or $40 per night, everything was basic—a tent, 2 pillows, a single thin mattress, a table and chairs, a few kitchen utensils, a gas stove and 1 gallon of mineral water. But despite that, It was the experience, the vibes, the tranquillity of the surrounding, and the view that made me fall in love with the place and in Bukidnon in general.

The moment I arrived in Malaybalay, the first thing that I did was to buy a grocery since there was no restaurant at the camping site. To get to Pine Ridge from the centre of Malaybalay, tell the tricycle driver to bring you to The Garden Suites; a few meters away, you will see a line of Habal-Habal drivers that can bring you to Pine Ridge.

Travel time is approximately 15 mins. Please note that you have to arrange the pickup date and time with the driver since there is no signal at Pine Ridge to contact them. For booking and inquiries, you can contact Pine Ridge via their FB page

If you just want to have a day tour trekking and still want to stay in the city. There are still decent accommodations you can find in Bukidnon. Here are my recommendations below:

Double M Hotel  is located in Poblacion of Valencia City. This chic, classy, and very affordable hotel is one of the best you can find in the city. Their average rate per night is P2,800++ or $50++. Click this link to book a discounted rate.

Uno Business Hotel  is located at P17 Sayre Highway, Hagcol, Valencia City. Known for having a very friendly and helpful staff. You will love your stay at Uno Business Hotel since their rate comes with a nice free breakfast. Their family room is good for 4. Their average rate per night is P4,300++ or $78++. Hotel Valencia is located at Sayre Highway, Valencia City, is the perfect place for you if you are on a budget. They are praised for having a very clean room and accommodating staff. Their rate starts at P950++ or $17++. Click this link to book a discounted rate.

Indeed, my short visit to Bukidnon was not enough to discover so many spots to explore in this province. Even though I couldn’t climb a mountain to see the best parts of Bukidnon. The view of the mountain range that I saw travelling from Davao , the pine forest view from my tent, and the calm vibes of Bukidnon were enough for me to love this province.

The province's total land area is 829,378 hectares (8, 293.78 square kilometers). It accounts for 59 percent (59%) of Northern Mindanao. Thirty-eight percent (38%) is alienable and disposable. The rest is classified as timberland.

Mount Kitanglad (2,899m.), Mount Kalatungan (2,860m.), Mt. Maagnaw (2,742m.), Mt. Lumuluyaw (2,612m.) and Mt. Tuminungan (2,400m.), the 4th, 5th, 8th, 17th and 30th highest mountains in the country respectively, are also found in the province.

Bukidnon is a highland paradise in the heart of Mindanao. It is home to the world's biggest pineapple plantation boasting a classic golf course dating back to 1928. It is the biggest cattle-producing province in the region. It has been identified as one of the country’s richest in biodiversity and endemic species of flora and fauna. Bukidnon is in the heartland of Mindanao, linking Davao to the south and Misamis Oriental to the north of the island.

Political history

• Bukidnon became a part of Misamis in the latter part of 1850. The whole area was then called Malaybalay and the people were known as Bukidnons (mountain people). The Philippine Commission, then headed by Commissioner Dean C. Worcester, Secretary of Interior, proposed the separation of Bukidnon from Misamis Province. On August 20, 1907, the Philippine Commission Act No. 1693 was enacted the Province of Agusan and sub-province of Bukidnon. Bukidnon became a regular province on March 10, 1917 by virtue of the creation of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu under Act 2711.
• In 1942, invading Japanese troops entered Bukidnon. Mt. Capistrano was a civilian evacuation area in the World War II. In 1945, the province was liberated from Japanese occupation by Filipino and American troops with the aid of Bukidnon-based Filipino guerrillas during the Second World War.

Cultural history

• According to oral history of the indigenous people of Bukidnon, there were four main tribes in Central Mindanao: the Maranao who dwell in Lanao del Sur, and the Maguindanao, Manobo and Talaandig who respectively inhabit the eastern, southern, and north-central portions of the original province of Cotabato. When the civil government divided central Mindanao into provinces at the turn of the 20th century, the groups included in the province of Bukidnon are the Talaandig and the Manobo. The Bisayans, Cebuano, Boholanos and Ilonggos migrated into the province followed by various groups from Luzon, namely, the Ilocanos, Batangueños, the Igorots and the Ivatans. All contributed massive acculturation among the indigenous tribes. Most of those who moved to the mountains and forest continued to hold on their ancestors’ cultural heritage. The wide variety of Filipino groups are now the thrives in the province and contributed immensely in the socio-economic development.

Bukidnon is blessed with many tourist attractions categorized as Resorts and Recreational Parks, Caves and Rock Walls, Tree Parks, Reforestation Projects and Eco-Tourism Sites, Farms, Plantations and Agro-Tourism Sites, Waterfalls and Springs, Lakes, Rivers and Watershed, Mountains, Plateaus and Canyons, Agricultural Centers, Industrial Centers, Cultural and Educational Institutions, Roads, Bridges and Other Structures and Religious Sites and Edifices.

Stone Marker of Yoshito’s Grave

• Located at Poblacion Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. This stone, inscribed with Japanese characters, marks the grave of high-ranking Japanese official killed during the World War II. Roughly elliptical and measuring about 2 feet and 1 foot across, the stone bears two sets of inscriptions which when translated, means “On this spot died Miyazaki Yoshitoi, chief of army and Emperor Chiao. In memory of Kaji Battalion, May 8, 1942.”

Kitanglad National Park

• A natural attraction located in north central Bukidon. It has an area of 31,297 hectares composed of more than a dozen mountain peaks, including Mt. Dulang-Dulang. The peak of the mountain could be reached through three trail routes, namely: Bolugan, Kaatuan, Lantapan / Lupiagan, Sumilao / Intavas, La Fortuna, Impasugong.

Mount Kitanglad

• The second highest mountain in the country, towers to more than nine thousand feet, serving as the base of the province’s long distance communication tower. It also offers a challenge to mountain climbers. To reach its summit, one has to scale its ranges for five hours passing through flora and fauna of genuine virgin forests. At the base of Lalawan, Dalwangan, is the home of the Philippine Eagle. It was declared as a National Park under EO 677 dated December 14, 1990. Rising up to 9,696 feet above sea level, this second highest peak in the Philippines, has been declared as highest in biodiversity. The temperature varies from 64 to 56 planted mostly with Alvizza Falcantria and other medicinal trees, most of which grow on trees which still drip with dew even at twelve o’clock high noon.
• Located at Guinoyuran, Valencia, the lake could be reached through jeepney and motorcycle. This twenty-four-hectare and eighty-five-foot-deep lake is surrounded by mountains. It is an ideal place for boating and fishing.

Paiyak Cave

• Found in the Palaopao mountains of Sumilao, Bukidnon, it is a fifteen-minute-ride and an hour-and-50-minute walk from Sayre Highway in Kisolon. This well-preserved cliffside cave has created centuries-old formations as gleaned from undistributed stalactites and stalagmites.

Pinamaloy Lake

• This serene and tranquil lake can be seen from the highway in Don Carlos, Bukidnon. Often used as picnic and fishing area.

Napalit Lake

• The 36-hectare, seventy-eight-foot-deep lake in Pigtauranan, Pangantucan, is located at the foot of the Kalatungan Mountains. It stands out because of its twenty-four floating islets of varying sizes, the biggest of which is 50 feet wide. Those islets float around the lake parallel to the direction of the wind.

Nasuli Spring

• Located twenty kilometers from Malaybalay. Nasuli springs offers nature enthusiasts cool, clear water which is ideal for diving and swimming.

Mt. Pigtuyuan

• Found in Sampagar, Damulog, breast-like mountain and 250 feet high with a slope range from 30 to 50 percent. Host of PLDT, PHILTEL, NAPOCOR & DOTC transmitters.

Minlaya Falls

• Located at Poblacion, Damulog, fifty-nine-foot-high falls and 15 feet deep at the drop site.

Quarry Cave

• Composed of several interconnected passages and has several outlets. The width ranges from .60 m to 19.10 m. while its height ranges from 1 meter to 6 meters located at East Poblacion of Kitaotao.

Liropan Cave

• Found in Kiabo, Malitbog, about 30 to 45 minutes ride from Poblacion. Noted for its deposit of organic fertilizer or guano. Its creek discharges milky white water.

Malagaha Lake

• Located in Barangay Kalingking, Malitbog and about a 15-minute ride from Poblacion, it is a hunting area for wild ducks, likewise a fishing ground for mudfish.

Sumalsag Cave

• Found in Kilabong, Sumilao which is known as the longest cave in the northern part of the province.

  Borantawan Cave

• Located in Bita-ug, Lantud, Talakag has a 300 meter vertical entrance and is almost a kilometer long. Bats thrive within the cave while its floor either flows with water or is covered with guano.

Del Monte Philippines Inc.

• This pineapple plantation is located in Manolo Fortich, Libona, Impasugong and Sumilao; considered the biggest single pineapple plantation in the Far East.

Del Monte Golf Course

• The evergreen, well-trimmed, world-class 18 hole golf course located within the Pineapple Plantation.

Mangima Canyon

• Is zigzagged road along the Sayre Highway, with views of rivers & hills, making it one of the most interesting spots in Bukidnon.

Mangima Spring Resort

• A local government-initiated project. The resort comprises approximately 6 hectares. Presently, the resort has four operational swimming pools. It is deal for family gatherings, horseback riding, seminars and relaxation since the site is surrounded with hills and mountains.

Impalutao Reforestation Project

• One of the earliest reforestation projects situated along the Sayre Highway in Impalutao, Impasugong, Offering nature lovers beautiful forest and crystal clear waterfalls.

Bukidnon Forest Inc.

• A 36,000 hectare-reforestation project under the assistance of the New Zealand government under the auspices of DENR.

Kaamulan Park

• Located at the back of the Provincial Capitol, the area is best used for camping and rodeo activities. It has been the site for provincial fairs, foremost of which is the Kaamulan. The park in its natural setting abounds with pine trees.
• Located at Dologon, Maramag. The resort is popular for swimming and relaxation.

Luan-Luan Spring and Swimming Pool

• Located within the Poblacion, municipality of Quezon. It is a place where several springs flow out the whole year round. It is popular for swimming.

VER Overview

• A high point located in Sitio Kipolot, Palopao, Quezon. The landscaped area offers the viewer a panorama of beautiful rolling hills and plains of Bukidnon.

Atugan Swimming Pool

• In Sumilao is managed by the Department of Public Works and Highways. It has a pool for adults as well as for kids.

Bird Watching

• Located in Lalawan, Dalwangan, 6 kms from the National Highway, is the home of the Philippine Eagle and host of rare bird species like the Philippine Hanging Parakeet. Giant scoops, owls, species of the flycatchers, brahmine kite and jungle fowl.

Seagull Valley Mountain Resort Swimming Pools

• Located at Barangay Lorega, Kitaotao, with parks, benches, cottages and lodging house.

Magawa Plain

• Proposed Golf Course contained with in an area of about 80 hectares. About 25 minutes' ride from Poblacion, Malitbog.

MENZI Farms

• A place which provides an overview of the whole municipality of Manolo Fortich. MENZI produces oranges, pineapples, cutflowers, cacao and coffee.

RPA Ventures, Inc.

• The Area formerly known as Farms Incorporated, which engages in cutflower production. Located in Barangay Diclum, Manolo Fortich. The area houses anthurium blooms of different Holland varieties.

Magic Farms

• A vast agricultural area devoted to different agricultural experimentation. Also produces grapes, banana, langka and freshwater fish.
• Located in Barangay Dahilayan, Manolo Fortich. This is where one can enjoy houseback riding and a camp-out night with the soothing caress of the cool breeze.
• Located in San Gabriel, Manolo Fortich. This is an 18 hectare area, which is devoted to the production of cut folfiage-potted ornamentals of both local and imported origins.

How to get there

Although there are public & private air-strips in Bukidnon, there are no commercial flights going directly to the province. The nearest airport is the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City, catering domestic flights from the cities of Manila, Cebu, and Davao. From Cagayan de Oro, a travel by land must be taken to reach Bukidnon.

Taking the bus is one of the convenient ways to reach Bukidnon by land. About 104 kilometers road distance from Cagayan de Oro and that is approximately one-hour-and-a-half land travel straight to the capital city of Bukidnon, Malaybalay. The capital city could also be reached from Davao City via Salawagan Quezon Bukidnon and that is about 208 kilometers with an estimated travel time of three and a half hours.

Other public transportation is also available, like public utility jeepneys and vans for hire.

Since Bukidnon is a landlocked province, sea transportation is generally through its closest port, the Port of Cagayan de Oro City then takes the transportation by land to reach the cities and municipalities in Bukidnon. Several ferry services are available connecting Cagayan de Oro City to seaports in the cities of Cebu, Manila, Bohol and other ports in Luzon and Visayas.

Limitless adventures: 9 tourist spots to visit in bukidnon.

“#LimitlessAdventures,” said May Unchuan, regional director of the Department of Tourism (DOT)-Northern Mindanao , when asked of a hashtag to include in our social media posts that would pertain to our upcoming four-day trip. “Limitless Adventures” is Northern Mindanao region’s tourism tag line.

Through the Influencers Program of the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) , I joined other travel content creators on a trip aimed at promoting the reopening of local destinations and reviving the industry knocked over by the pandemic. Our team were to go around Bukidnon, the largest province of Northern Mindanao.

“Bukidnon” literally means “mountain dweller.” In the past, the term referred only to the people who lived in the mountains of an area called Malaybalay that formed part of the erstwhile undivided Misamis province. Today, the term indicates both the Province of Bukidnon and an eponymous ethnic group, one of the seven indigenous tribes, that call Bukidnon their home.

Next to Palawan and Isabela, Bukidnon is the country’s third largest province in terms of land area, covering a wide plateau and mountainous borders in the north central part of Mindanao island. Due to its elevation, Bukidnon’s main draw is the panoramic mountain range and its climate akin to Baguio City. However, there is more to Bukidnon than the scenery and the icy breeze.

Dahilayan Adventure Park

In Manolo Fortich town, Dahilayan Adventure Park nestles a thousand meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Kitanglad Mountain Range. For its grove of pines and mountain lodgings, the park is comparable to the City of Pines. In fact, Dahilayan is one of Mindanao’s favorite summer escapes.

The eco-adventure park is home to “Asia’s longest dual zipline” that stretches 840 meters across a rainforest canopy. This breathtaking ride zooms up to 90 kilometers per hour while its couple riders are in Superman position. However, it is not yet the most exhilarating. The park prides itself as “Mindanao’s Favorite Extreme Playground” and by “extreme” they mean the Dropzone, a 120-foot free fall into the surface of a man-made lake. Tandem riders are tied up in a harness, hoisted, then unbuckled and left swinging à la pendulum until it slowly come to a halt.

Dahilayan Forest Park

For a milder thrill, Dahilayan Forest Park, located right beside the Adventure Park, has rides that don’t suspend anyone in midair. They have ATVs, luge, go-karts and bumper boats among others.

Another thrill-inducing spot in Manolo Fortich is KampoJuan whose flagship ride is called anicycle, “Asia’s first-ever sky bike” as KampoJuan professes. The ride entails pedaling across a 300-meter cable suspended over a dizzying gorge, connecting both ends of the craggy ravine where a placid river flows below. It is a heart-stopping nature trip.

KampoJuan is also an eco-heritage resort. Within its forested property, there is a four-story mansion that once stood in Pangasinan for over a century. KampoJuan’s owner purchased the ancestral house, dismantled it, brought it to Bukidnon piece by piece and became the first and only of its kind—a transported house—in Mindanao. The mansion is full to the brim with almost a thousand historical artifacts. It functions as a museum and a tourist lodging that gives its visitors a stay with a patina of the colonial times.

Among the noteworthy pieces on display is the original copy of the first Tagalog translation of Noli Me Tangere. There are only two surviving copies of the translated novel, the National Museum in Manila keeps the other one.

Talaandig Soil Painting Gallery

In Lantapan, the Talaandig Soil Painting Gallery houses a handful of artworks with subjects centered on nature, child and women empowerment and the rich culture of the Talaandig tribe. Visiting the gallery may include a meet-and-greet with Salima Saway, one of the known soil painters whose works had graced international exhibits in recent years. The gallery, where Salima resides and paints, also serves as an art school where Salima ensures that the art using Bukidnon’s rich soil as medium is being passed on to the young generation.

Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association

Another tribal art worth saving is the ikam , Bukidnon’s sacred practice of weaving. Since time immemorial, Bukidnon has produced elaborately designed banig (mats) using sodsod, a type of cogon grass endemic to the region, as the main material. The mats, which the Tagoloanen people (sometimes “Tagolwanen”) traditionally give as a wedding present or as a condolence in funeral ceremonies, are being sold at the TWWA Tagolwanen Handwoven shop in Malaybalay City. The souvenir store is managed by the Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association (TWWA), a social enterprise that saved the vanishing art, helped preserve the Tagoloanen indigenous identity and provided a living to the weavers since its establishment in 2012.

Abbey of the Transfiguration

Far from the concrete jungles of Bukidnon’s capital, situated on a hill in San Jose, Malaybalay City, is the hushed environs of the Abbey of the Transfiguration where the highlight of every visit is an architectural marvel. The monastery’s pyramidal church is a masterpiece of National Artist Leandro Locsin who did not live long enough to see the magnificence of what has become his final piece of work.

The Benedictine monastery also keeps an exhibit of liturgical vestments made from indigenous materials. The vestments are creations of Dom Martin de Jesus Gomez, a sought-after couturier known to the fashion elites of the 1970s as Gang Gomez before he chose to live the monastic life. Gomez authored the award-winning book “Worship and Weave” which highlights this vestment collection.

Aside from the church and museum, the Benedictines cultivate a tract of land that produces Monk’s Blend, a premium coffee brand. Monk’s Blend, available at the Abbey’s gift shop, deserves a spot in everyone’s coffee nook.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

A guided tour around the 30-year-old Binahon Agroforestry Farm in Lantapan is quite a fun and learning experience. It is interesting to know about the farm’s methods of agricultural production, forestry and biodiversity conservation. To make the farm tour more delightful, Binahon let their guests experience harvesting crops such as cabbages and carrots. Another unique experience, unless you are already on a clean diet, is snacking on the farm’s organic fare.

Philippine Carabao Center at CMU

In Maramag town, within the 3000-hectare estate of Central Mindanao University (CMU), is yet another fun tour on agricultural production. The Philippine Carabao Center at CMU is home to hundreds of Bulgarian Murrah buffalo that are raised for their milk. Aside from learning about the buffalo breed, they let farm visitors try hand milking the carabaos, that is, if they are not yet milked using a machine. At Bukidnon Dairy, the farm’s product outlet, tourists can visit the laboratory where the raw milk is processed into more palatable fresh milk or chocolate milk drink.

Taglucop Strawberry Hills

While many travel-related businesses ran at a loss or completely shut down since the onset of the pandemic, there are some ventures that just started such as the Taglucop Strawberry Hills, a strawberry farm and glamping site in the highlands of Kitaotao. Alongside the ruggedness of nature and chilly Bukidnon weather, Taglucop’s geodesic dome tents that can comfortably fit up to eight people are complete with the convenience of electricity, cushy beds, outdoor Jacuzzi and en suite bathrooms.

Glamping in Taglucop is a total relaxation—a wintry weather throughout the day, bonfire, s’mores and strawberry wine come night time, and a vista of the sea of clouds in the early morn. Just like what The Beatles said in their psychedelic hit “Strawberry Fields Forever”, when in Taglucop Strawberry Hills, there is “nothing to get hung about.”

This is an incomplete list of what to do in Bukidnon. Four days, or even five, as our newfound friends from DOT-Northern Mindanao asserted, are not enough to cover every inch of the landlocked province. But that is Bukidnon’s charm: the seemingly unlimited adventures that are in store for its visitors. Aside from coffee, carabao dairy, banig and strawberry, you will be going home with so much reasons to come back.

Nestled among the territories of Mindanao , is a landlocked area whose name is derived from the local name for highlander or a mountain dweller – Bukidnon. It houses the country’s second-highest point – Mount Dulang-dulang which rises to an elevation of 2938 meters above sea level. Also worth mentioning is that the province also has the Kitanglad Mountain Range which includes Mount Kalatungan, with an elevation of 2860 meters, Mount Kitanglad with its 2899-meter height, Mount Maagnaw with its 2742-meter elevation and Mount Tuminungan with a recorded elevation of 2400 meters.

Rich biodiversity is evident among these mountains which adds to the allure for nature lovers. Hiking through these mountains would prove to be an excellent adventure for nature lovers because its paths may also provide some kind of challenge even for the most experienced hikers. Still, the effort would be worth it because hikers would be treated not only with breathtaking views but also with crisp and fresh mountain air that revitalizes the senses.

While devoid of any seaports or huge bodies of water, it does boast of huge tracts of land which produce huge harvests of produce such as pineapples, sugarcane, and bananas – all of which are export quality material. It also is known for being the breadbasket of Mindanao as it produced huge amounts of rice and corn that brought sustenance to the residents of the province and nearby areas. Such agricultural bounty has proved to be a boon for residents of the province who are among the wealthiest in the Mindanao region.

While it is landlocked, it does have a reputation as the watershed of the area with Bukidnon being endowed with six major river systems which feed its many fields of bounty. These rivers: the Pulangi, the Cagayan, the Tagoloan, the Muleta, the Manupali, and the Bobonawan are great forces of nature as they are among the many reasons why the province is replete with canyons.

The longest river in the province, the Pulangi River, is basically a tributary of the Rio Grande de Mindanao, one of the important water systems in the whole country and makes its way into several municipalities of the province. The other rivers also run through several municipalities and are among the important resources where these places are founded on. The teeming resources provided by these rivers add to the bounty of the land to make the province truly special.

The place holds much promise. It still holds a lot of Bukidnon Tourist Spot to be discovered, a lot of things to be re-discovered, a lot of things to be encountered and experienced to make a visit worthwhile. The potential is unlimited, the challenge of putting together the opportunities enormous, but the resiliency and the strength of native Bukidnons would surely come to fore.

KAAMULAN FESTIVAL

in terms of cultural celebrations, Bukidnon boasts of hosting the Kaamulan Festival annually which runs from the middle weeks of February until the 10th of March. The celebration commemorates and celebrates the culture and the tradition of the seven ethnic tribal groups in the province – the Higaonons, the Talaandigs, the Manobos, the Tigwahanons, the Matigsalugs, the Umayamnons, and the Bukidnons. The gathering of tribes and participants brings forth a ritual connected to datuship, a wedding ceremony or even a Thanksgiving activity aimed at establishing relations between and among tribes.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Lumbia Airport which is found in Cagayan de Oro is the nearest airport in Bukidnon. Domestics flights coming from Manila, Cebu, and Davao are being catered to this airport. From Cagayan de Oro you can take a bus all the way to Bukidnon. You can also hire a van to reach the place.

Your Complete BuDa (Bukidnon-Davao) Travel Guide: Spots To Visit, Itinerary and Tips

From its beautiful and scenic highlands and islands to its picturesque and pristine beaches, there’s no denying that the region has a lot to offer, and we have covered many of them here at Car Rental Davao.

One of the places that really encapsulate the beauty of Mindanao is BuDa. To start, BuDa is short for Bukidnon-Davao and it essentially the boundary that links the province of Bukidnon and the city of Davao. It has since become a go-to place for tourists and vacationers, thanks to its stunning landscape and relaxing scenery.

Surrounded by mountain ranges, green and lush forests and a stunning view of the tallest mountain in the Philippines — no less than Mount Apo —  it is considered as the “Baguio of the South.” That’s a fair comparison because like that city up north, BuDa is also shrouded in fog and is enveloped in cold weather all year round. Likewise, it is also elevated 4000m above sea level, making it a haven to those who want to escape the heat in the city.

Last year, this author had a chance to visit BuDa for the first time. I was also originally planning to go back this year until COVID-19 happened. While travel remains restricted across the country, allow me to share with you my travel experience.

How to get to BuDa

Getting to BuDa is easy and Car Rental Davao will make it even easier for you. Rent a car from us and have a comfortable trip. We have everything from sedan to SUV to vans, all premium but cheap rental cars.

If you’re a tourist or visitor from the north, we can have an airport car rental arranged for you and have the unit delivered at Davao airport. If you’re already in the city, we can also drop off the unit exactly at your location.

If you intend to stay in BuDa for long, we can also offer special car rental deals for you — just contact us directly and we will make the arrangement for you.

Normally, it will take you at least 3 hours if you take the bus, but by renting a car from us you can cut the travel time down to 2 hours, or even less.

On your way to BuDa, you will be passing by a community in the southern part of Davao known for its vegetation, gardens selling flowers and plants, livestock farms, cacao farms, fruit stands and fishponds. And the good part is, they are way cheaper than the ones in the city. It is definitely worth it if you make a quick stop here.

Once you start seeing two giant sculptural pieces of the Davao Eagle, known as the “King of Philippine Skies,” along BuDa Highway in Barangay Baganihan in Marilog District, then that signals you are already in BuDa.

Things to do in BuDa

Once you’ve arrived at BuDa, the first thing you should do is to eat. One of the must-tries here is Seagull Steak House and Coffee House, a quaint resto-café that serves everything from sandwiches to pancit to steak and sisig, paired with your choice of coffee: cappuccino, brewed, latte — they have everything.

But perhaps one that you shouldn’t miss is their best-seller: their suman-sikwate duo (suman paired with Davao’s native cocoa drink). Priced at just P65, this delicacy is one of the best I’ve tried. It has the right layers of flavors, texture and pleasing plate presentation. I can’t wait to try this again!

Once you are refuelled, I suggest you head straight to your next destination. Around 30 minutes away from Seagull is The Reel Place, a resort that is known as “The Little Baguio.” True to its moniker, The Reel Place is a great representation of Baguio. I’ve been to that city up in the Northern Philippines numerous times so I know what it looks like. The landscape, the feel and the vibes are so Baguo-like. The only difference is the crowd. I hope it stays that way.

The entrance fee here is only P25 per head, and with that you can try everything from taking a dip at their swimming pool to crossing their hanging bridge and visiting their playground. You can also try their zip-line and experience their monkey bridge — you just have to pay separate fees.

Another place I highly recommend is the Benwa Farm, a unique place that offers a wholesome agricultural farming experience to its visitors. You have everything available here at very reasonable prices: from fresh produce like strawberries to rows of sunflowers, potted herbs and other organic products. As we are definitely a family of strawberry-lovers, we decided to bring home bags of it with us, with my mom making sure we had enough of them as pasalubong.

Inside the farm you can also find their in-house canteen which serves their special lugaw and goto, as well as vegetable salad prepared using their own products. I must say, for a not-your-usual lugaw, Benwa Farm’s tasted fantastic! Not to mention, healthier and better.

Also something unique that Benwa Farm has to offer — that I thought was only available in Baguio — is their famed strawberry taho (strawberry flavored soybean curd). Be reminded though that it is only available during weekends.

As someone who’s trying to be healthy and is an organic-eater, this, for me, was one of the highlights of my BuDa trip. It was such an enjoyable and at the same time educational experience to see how they grow these homegrown products. I will definitely go back.

Also a must-visit in BuDa is Epol Falls. It’s a 20-feet high majestic falls, which according to locals there stands for “Everlasting Power of Love.” To get here you need to have stamina, and lots of it, as you will be trekking for many kilometres. It was worth the long walks though, I guarantee you, as you will be passing by one of the hidden gems of Mindanao.

Just a tip: Make sure to have a jacket or sweater with you as the water gushing from the falls can be a bit icy cold. Also note that a right of way of P7 per head is being collected at the entrance and another in a small house near the falls so it’s better to prepare coins beforehand.

Lastly, you can never leave BuDa without visiting Hills View Mountain Villa. This is actually one of the best places I’ve been to so far. Everything about it is perfect. From its unique setting — perched on a hill overlooking the beautiful and picturesque scenery of nature and the sea of clouds — to the cold breeze of the wind, the Hills View Mountain Villa is just perfect for a family reunion or get-together. I happened to be with my parents and siblings so it was really one for the books.

Other places to visit are Highway 81, Alice Log House and Buda Vista Vacation House. I look forward to covering them here on Car Rental Davao in the near future.

Our lives are often full of pressure and distraction. Most of the time we rush on things too much that we forget to pause and live for a moment. Once in a while we have to breathe and see the beauty of the world we live in. We have to have a deeper connection with nature and the people around us. BuDa gave me that — the feeling of being connected with the people I love and just being alive.

I hope to be able to go back once this pandemic is over. Who knows, maybe I will be able to bump into you and we can have a real human connection.
