We loved visiting Las Vegas and, yes, it's absolutely a entertainment capital that any traveler should visit. By the end of our time here, it felt like a second home. We first visited in 2007 and have returned several times. During our time here, we fell in love with its endless supply of activities and energy.

Whether you're a a couple or on a weekend getaway, this entertainment capital has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the great theatre productions and amazing food.

Las Vegas is an iconic destination with over-the-top resort hotels, elaborate casinos, grand shows, and a theatrical atmosphere. Things to Consider Before Visiting Las Vegas

Las Vegas, otherwise known as Sin City is the 25th most populated city in the US. Located in the state of Nevada, the city sits in the Mojave Dessert and is surrounded by rugged mountain ranges.

Over 41 million people visit Vegas every year and a whopping 22,000 conventions are also held here. So it is pretty safe to say it is a popular tourist destination. It’s also one of the brightest places on earth, which isn’t surprising if you have spent any time on the Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas was founded in 1905 when a group of developers wanted to build a railroad stop between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles . Fremont Street was the original site where hotels started to spring up which is now referred to as Old Las Vegas. It wasn’t until 1946 when the first hotel sprung up on the now famous Vegas Strip, and the rest is history.

Las Vegas can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it. There are so many hotel options making it easy to find budget accommodation. Just make sure you book well in advance, and try to avoid peak tourist seasons. Even food ranges from super cheap fast food to luxury restaurants.

For a mid range kind of break you probably want to budget around $200- $250 per person per day. That isn’t including accommodation.

You won’t have any issues paying on your credit card is Las Vegas. That being said you may need to bring some cash with you for things like tipping or gambling. Tipping is customary in the US and you need to tip wait staff, bellhops, taxi drivers, tour guides and more. The easiest and sometimes only way to do this is with cash, so make sure you have some on you in Vegas. You will find ATMs all around Vegas but just be careful as some may charge you hefty fees to withdraw funds.

Like the rest of the USA English is spoken in Las Vegas. You may get some people who speak other languages like Spanish for instance, but unlike Europe the vast majority of people here only speak 1 language which is English.

Las Vegas has one main airport which is McCarran International Airport. A lot of international and domestic flights arrive and depart from here, so finding a flight won’t be an issue. If you are travelling to Las Vegas from places such as Australia, or Ireland, you may need to transfer from another US airport like San Francisco or New York as direct flights can be expensive or limited.

The airport is really close to the Vegas strip so you are best off either getting a shuttle bus to your hotel or a taxi. Both options can be booked at the airport once you arrive. And depending on which hotel you are staying at drop offs can take as little as 15 minutes.

We think that you need a minimum of 2 days in Las Vegas to make your most of the trip. Obviously it depends on what you plan to do when you get here, and if you are planning lots of day trips, or a lot of drinking adventures then you will need a bit longer.

Las Vegas is a good spot to visit if you are doing a trip around the USA or even just a trip around the West Coast .

There are parts of Vegas that can be a bit sketchy which is something to keep in mind when visiting. You also have people drinking lots of alcohol as it is a party city so again it’s worth keeping your wits about you. There is a lot of money that moves around Vegas too, so financial crimes are also common.

That being said, if you are hanging around the main tourist areas you should be ok, particularly around The Strip. Although, Theft is common so be mindful of your belongings and if you are travelling at night get a taxi and take precautions.

When you visit different US cities it can feel like you are visiting a completely different country. Las Vegas can go one step further and make you feel like you are visiting a different planet. It’s completely different to anywhere else we have visited in the US. If you want to let your hair down, have a fun weekend, and just escape Vegas is for you.

You can use public transport if you are visiting Las Vegas, and the bus network is not only cheap but incredibly reliable. You will be surprised at just how large Vegas is, particularly the Vegas strip so you will want to think of alternatives to walking.

Another way to get around the Strip is via monorail . You can purchase different ticket types depending on how often you want to travel throughout the day. Just keep in mind that the monorail will only stop at certain hotels.

The best way to get around Vegas is to just get an Uber. You can do ride shares with other travellers if you want to save money, but even without doing this taxis are relatively cheap in the city. One thing that you should know is that you cannot hail a taxi off the Strip in Vegas. A taxi needs to collect you at an actual address like a hotel taxi queue.

Have breakfast in Paris, then spend lunch in Venice before visiting New York for dinner. It’s all possible because it’s Vegas. The hotels on The Strip are incredible and you have to explore when visiting Vegas.

Obviously a bit part of Vegas is gambling. Just do it responsibly if you are going to do it.

Take a relaxing gondola ride in the middle of a shopping mall at the Venetian Hotel. It’s a complete novelty experience and a lot of fun.

The Eiffel Tower isn’t just for France! Located in the Paris Hotel is Vegas own version of the French attraction. You get some awesome views of Vegas from here for about $16.

Every 15-30 minutes (depending on the time of day) the fountains at the Bellagio do their thing. The shows are pretty spectacular but make sure you get in a good 10 minutes before the start so you can see.

If you want to experince the razzle-dazzle of Vegas make sure you head to a show There are so many different ones to choose from and will depend on the season. You do have your staples like Cirque du Soleil.

Located at the top of the strip close to Mandalay Bay you will find the Vegas sign. Just get here super early if you want a photo without the crowds of people.

Downtown is the original Las Vegas. It’s far more authentic and outlandish than the Vegas Strip and arguably a lot more fun too. There is a lot to do like explore the old school hotels, and visit the Fremont Street experience, which in case you were wondering is a 12 story high zip-line that whizzes you across the street.

When in Downtown Las Vegas you have to visit the Mob Museum. Located in a historic US Federal Courthouse this is where many of the mobsters in the museum actually had court hearings. Here you can learn all about the mobs connection to Vegas.

Obviously this isn’t for everyone but it is a bucket list thing to do in Las Vegas.

As weird as it sounds Las Vegas is actually a pretty cool place to visit for solo travellers. I know that it has this reputation of being party central, but there is a lot more to the city than that. There are so many cool museums you can go to, as well as visiting the hotels and generally exploring. When I travelled alone to Las Vegas many moons ago, I really enjoyed it. I booked a couple of tours and met people on these which was great.

On my most recent trip to Vegas I went with Dave, and we ended up getting married here. So yes Las Vegas is a pretty cool place to visit as a couple. Aside from the getting married there are so many other fun activities you can do as a couple. From lounging by the pool sipping cocktails to floating around on a gondola at the Venetian Hotel, you will find something romantic to do that’s for sure.

Again I know Las Vegas has this reputation for being party central, but it is a great place to go for families too. There are a lot of fun museums like Madam Tussauds or the Mob Museum that you can enjoy as a family. On top of that you have some cool hotels like New York New York to visit. And if it all gets a bit much, visiting the Grand Canyon makes for a great family day out.

We found Vegas to be an absolute culinary melting pot. There are so many awesome places to eat including a number of celebrity chef restaurants. When it comes to food whatever you want in Vegas chances are you will find it. And the good thing too is that there is great food to suit every budget.

Is Las Vegas worth visiting for the nightlife? Seriously do you need to ask it’s Vegas. You have your choice between over the top nightclubs, sports bars, cocktail lounges, and so much more.

It might surprise you to learn that Las Vegas is actual a pretty good place to go if you enjoy nature. If you leave the city itself you will find yourself in the middle of the Mohave Desert. Hikers will love Red Rock Canyon where you will find 26 hiking trails ranging in difficulty. If you don’t want to go too far from the Strip you also have places like The Springs Preserve which is about 3.5 miles of preserved desert landscape waiting to be explored.

If you love nature you should book yourself a day trip and explore the unique desert surroundings of Las Vegas. Don’t forget you also have the Grand Canyon which is totally doable in a day.

You might not immediately think history when you think Las Vegas, but there are actually some pretty cool places to go if you are a history buff. The Nevada State Museum gives you some insight into the history of the area including some exhibits looking back millions of years ago.

For more modern history you also have places like the Mob Museum which will provide you with a lot of information on Vegas in it’s heyday.

Don’t forget that Vegas is in the middle of the desert. So if you are wondering is Las Vegas worth visiting in the summer we would only recommend it if you enjoy the heat. The temperature can get to 40 degrees Celsius or over 100 Fahrenheit. It’s fair to say that you probably don’t want to be spending long periods of time outside. Luckily the hotels particularly on the Strip are air conditioned so you can spend the majority of time indoors.

If you want to enjoy time by the pool sipping cocktails, summer isn’t a bad time to visit as long as you keep your pool time to the cooler parts of the day.

It is surprisingly cool in Vegas during the winter months. Evenings can get below freezing, whilst days remain at a mild 10 – 20 degrees Celsius (50 – 68 Fahrenheit). It’s still a popular place to visit, particularly as it is warmer than other cities in the US at this time of year. Christmas in Las Vegas is also incredible with lights, glitz and glamour.

Apart from your standard packing list here are some suggestions on things to pack when visiting Vegas.

• Your best outfit for those crazy nights out
• Comfy walking shoes to travel between hotels in the day
• Swimming costume
• Sunglasses, sun cream and general items for sun protection
• A light cardigan or jacket as it does get cool inside the hotels with all that air con

Best time to travel to Las Vegas

If you’re looking to escape the cold weather and enjoy some sunny skies, there’s no better place to travel than Las Vegas.

The city is known for its hot temperatures and dry desert climate, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking a respite from the winter blues. 

If you’re looking for warm weather and pool time, the best time to travel to Las Vegas is from April to June. However, be aware that prices will be higher during this time as it is peak tourist season.

How to get around Las Vegas

Las Vegas, aka Sin City, aka The Entertainment Capital of the World – whatever moniker you give her, there’s no denying that Vegas is the jewel of the Nevada Desert. The city is also a bucket list destination for many travelers worldwide, thanks to its world-class gaming, luxury resorts, and dynamic nightlife.  

Las Vegas is one of those cities that has something to appeal to everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling solo, hitting the Strip with your closest friends, enjoying a romantic getaway, or even taking a business trip, a vacation in this vibrant city will leave you with some truly unforgettable memories.  

Vegas is truly a destination for all types of travelers, even those on a tight budget.

• Vegas is the world’s brightest city – as seen from space, the bright lights of Las Vegas can be seen from over 100 miles away. It’s even been estimated that around 15,000 miles of neon tubing are used in the city’s signage. 
• The Las Vegas Strip isn’t in Las Vegas – the home of the most iconic casinos and hotel resorts in North America, the Las Vegas Strip, isn’t actually located within the city limits. Instead, it’s located in an unincorporated area called Paradise, situated just outside the city. 
• Home to the Tallest Observation Tower in America – The Stratosphere Tower (now known as The Strat), which stands at a whopping 1,149 feet tall, is currently the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. Visitors can take a ride on the tower’s thrill rides, including the Big Shot, which shoots riders straight up into the air at 45 mph.  
• The Vegas Flag – Las Vegas city has an official flag, which features a red background with two diagonal white stripes and a depiction of the iconic ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign in the center. The flag was designed in 1984 by local graphic designer Robert R. “Bob” Smith and was adopted by the city council in 2001.

Of course, if you do have the budget to splash out on a dream vacation, Las Vegas is the destination for you! Vegas is home to some of the world’s most luxurious hotels and casino resorts. The city’s hotels offer everything from five-star dining options to world-class spas and pools. You can even stay in hotels that are replicas of famous landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower.

Not only that but some of the world’s most expensive suites are located here, like the $100,000-a-night  Empathy Suite at Palms Casino Resort .  

It’s a Gamer’s Paradise 

Las Vegas’s casinos are as impressive as its hotels, making it a gamer’s paradise. Casinos like the Bellagio and Caesars Palace feature some of the largest and most elaborate gaming floors in the world. It’s no wonder that major events like the World Series of Poker take place here.  

Although Sin City’s casinos are a favorite with global high rollers, they’re open to people of all experience levels – even those who’ve never set foot inside a casino before. Of course, you’ll need to adhere to any dress codes and ensure that you follow the rules set by each casino, but you can participate in as many or few games of the likes of blackjack, poker, or roulette as you like.  

If you are going to hit the roulette tables and you’ve never played this iconic game before, developing an understanding of the fundamentals of the game, such as  how many numbers are on the wheel  and what the most common bets are, will serve you well. Alternatively, you may just want to try your skills at the slot machines or simply enjoy the atmosphere in these grand, opulent gaming palaces.  

The Las Vegas art scene

The art scene in Las Vegas is thriving, with a diverse range of artists and styles represented throughout the city. Whilst it is known for the neon-drenched casinos and hotels of the Strip, there happens to be a growing appreciation for contemporary art and street art in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has a vibrant museum culture that reflects the city’s eclectic personality and diverse interests. The museums in Las Vegas cover a wide range of topics, from the city’s history and its ties to the mafia, to the art and the culture of the region. 

A must-visit museum in Las Vegas is the  Neon Museum , which houses an impressive collection of vintage neon signs from the city’s past. The museum offers guided tours that provide insight into the history of Las Vegas and the role that neon signage played in the city’s development. 

Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking for something new and interesting to explore, Las Vegas’s museums offer a unique and exciting way to experience the city. 

Las Vegas has plenty of hotels to choose from, whether you want to stay on the strip or further afield. Many of the hotels along the strip are themed and fun, offering casinos, pools, spas and restaurants. We personally love the Cosmopolitan and the Flamingo hotels but the Bellagio and The Venetian have incredible theming and are unique hotels in the US while the Luxor and New York New York hotels offer great deals. 

For first-time visitors, you may be shocked to know that Vegas is actually more affordable than you may think. With so many hotel rooms to fill, rates can be lower than many other top destinations in the US, especially on weekdays and during the hot summer. 

Also, because of the competition, hotel buffets, restaurants, and even attractions, are priced fairly, in order to attract visitors. 

On top of that, there are plenty of free things to do in Vegas, like the Bellagio Fountain or The Mirage volcano. 

The gambling

Of course, we can’t talk about Las Vegas without talking about gambling. There are casinos everywhere in Vegas with many offering electronic roulette and table games, ideal for newbies. Head to Fremont Street for low stakes or visit the luxury hotel casinos for a high-end experience. 

The shopping

Most casinos have shops attached to them but it’s best to avoid these if possible. Instead, get some great deals at the Las Vegas Premium Outlets and the Fashion Outlets, both full of designer brands offering huge discounts. 

Las Vegas is the place to go for all types of food and all budgets. You can certainly get budget-friendly options from the many chains along the strip but we recommend enjoying at least one of the best buffets in Vegas . There are plenty of celebrity restaurants and 5-star options along the strip too, from Guy Savoy’s popular restaurant in Caesars Palace to Gordon Ramsay’s many restaurants for all tastes and budgets. 

The attractions

There is so much to see and do in Vegas, you will never be bored, even if you aren’t a gambler. Head to the many museums in the area, like the Neon Museum or the Mob Museum, walk along Fremont Street, take a ride on the High Roller.

Explore the Bellagio Conservatory, take a helicopter tour from above, visit Madame Tussauds, and explore the whole strip on the Hop-on, Hop-off Big Bus Tour. Many of these attractions are included on the Go City Las Vegas pass, we will leave the link in the description below. 

The nightlife

Las Vegas can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Spend evenings hopping between the casinos and enjoy free drinks as you gamble at most spots around the strip but also check out the restaurants and bars in the area too.

Dance the night away at one of the nightclubs, see Vegas lit up from above from either The Strat, the Eiffel Tower, or the High Roller, and spend an evening seeing one of the best shows in Vegas too, we will talk about that next. 

There are so many shows to choose from whilst in Las Vegas. Cirque De Soleil’s shows are truly spectacular, with a variety to choose from in Vegas; we personally love the show LOVE, a performance accompanied by The Beatles music.

There are some great magic shows to be enjoyed here, including David Copperfield, whilst hen and stag parties have plenty of adult shows to choose from. There are comedy shows that can be found here too, as well as residencies to check out. 

At the time of recording this, Las Vegas residencies include Adele, Carrie Underwood and Maroon 5, with U2 joining this list shortly in the impressive new MSG Sphere. 

The day trips

The best time to visit Las Vegas is from March to May and from September to November. While you'll find plenty of travel deals throughout the year, the spring and fall shoulder seasons offer the most moderate weather. Sin City welcomes an influx of visitors during the winter months, especially surrounding New Year's Eve, the Super Bowl and Valentine's Day, and the sweltering summers see daytime temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. No matter when you decide to visit Vegas, try to plan a midweek trip – because this is a common weekend getaway destination, you'll find more rooms at lower rates between Tuesday and Thursday.

Las Vegas is also home to hundreds of conventions each year, which can drive up room rates. Before setting travel dates, check the city's tourism board convention schedule to find out which hotels are hosting what and when – this will help you secure a better deal at your choice hotel.

Las Vegas is on the bucket list of millions upon millions of people, and it grows more and more popular every single year.

Whether you want to visit Vegas for the casinos, the luxury lifestyle, or maybe even the Grand Canyon, you’re going to want to know how much things are going to cost.

Luckily for you, I’m a full-time traveller and I’ve developed a good judgement of whether places are expensive or not, and I’ve also visited Las Vegas too.

So I’ve created this ultimate guide as to whether Vegas is expensive or not to help you plan your budget for a trip to Sin City.

Is Las Vegas Expensive?

To summarise this entire article into one sentence: Whether Vegas is expensive or not is up to you.

It sounds obvious, and it sounds unhelpful, but it’s true. Allow me to explain…

You can visit Vegas on a shoestring budget, without a doubt. There are some budget hotel rooms in Vegas, and there are food vans too where you can get cheap food.

But that’s not typically the experience people imagine when they picture Vegas.

And when it comes to casinos in gambling, the chances are, that it will make up a large portion of your Vegas budget. It goes without saying, that it’s entirely down to you how much you spend on gambling .

This is why I say that whether Las Vegas is expensive or not is down to you.

What I will say is that if you do choose to gamble in Vegas, as the saying goes, “when the fun stops stop”. If you need help with gambling addiction or problems, the Nevada Council have a Problem Gambling Helpline which you can reach by calling 1-800-GAMBLER or texting 800-GAM.

If you want a typical Las Vegas experience where you stay in a decent hotel on the Strip, you eat in nice restaurants and you gamble a bit here and there, then yeah, Vegas is pretty expensive.

It’s not the most expensive city in the world, but it’s definitely not the cheapest either. A trip to Vegas can get pretty pricey. That’s why it’s often a trip for weddings, honeymoons, 21st birthdays, and other special occasions.

Las Vegas is full of bucket list experiences .

Most people only stay in LV for a few days max, you rarely hear of people staying in Vegas for a week or two. Unless, like Elvis Presley, you’ve “ got a whole lot of money that’s ready to burn “, then a few days is probably enough to get the Vegas experience without blowing the bank.

So to summarise, whether Vegas is expensive or not depends on how much you gamble pretty much. In terms of everything else, Vegas is moderately expensive compared to other cities throughout the US.

How expensive is Las Vegas?

Like anywhere in the world, your budget in Vegas depends on three factors: accommodation, food, and things to do. With Vegas though, “things to do” encompasses slots, which can quickly ramp up your budget.

As I said earlier in the article, whether Vegas is expensive or not is up to you. Las Vegas has an unusually wide spectrum of budgets.

Whether you stay in a 5-star hotel directly on the Las Vegas Strip, or a 3-star hotel a bit further away is going to have a huge impact on your budget, for example.

Or whether you choose to take a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon from Vegas , or drive there yourself, has a massive effect on your budget.

If you are wondering how much you should budget for a trip to Vegas, around $310 per person per day is recommended.

Of course, this is just a suggestion for the average visitor. How much you gamble, where you stay, where you eat, etc., will impact this massively. To give Vegas some credit, just over $300 per day isn’t too bad, considering how expensive Miami is , for example, which is nearly $600 per day.

Compared to the rest of America, Vegas is only around 10% more expensive for accommodation and housing. It actually works out cheaper in Vegas for groceries and utilities, but unless you are living in the city long-term, it’s unlikely you’ll ever need to pay for either.

So to summarise, Vegas is a bit expensive to visit, but it’s really down to you.

How much is Accommodation in Las Vegas?

As I said above, the quality of your accommodation will decide how expensive it is, but that’s common sense. The location of the accommodation will also have an influence on the price.

I think finding somewhere in the middle between budget and luxury is a nice balance. A nice mid-range hotel in Las Vegas is the Alexis Park All Suite Resort which is located just a block or two off the Strip, and offers the perfect stay which feels luxurious, but is very affordable. It works out costing less than $120 a night – depending on the time of the year – which is insane value for money.

There are actually lots of hostels in Las Vegas too, if you are interested in really keeping the budget down. You can find places to stay for less than $25 a night, a lot less than a $200 hotel room. Personally, I recommend the Sin City Hostel which is one of the best hostels you will find anywhere in the US.

How Expensive is Food in Las Vegas?

If you aren’t from the US, you will probably find the price of food in Las Vegas extremely expensive. If you are from the US, you’ll probably find it about the same as home.

Like everything, it depends on where you eat. If you get a burger from a food van, it will cost you $6-7. If you opt for the Beef Wellington from Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen as shown below, it will cost you over $70 for this dish alone.

On average, a meal in Vegas will cost about $30 per person. Add a starter and dessert and the price goes up. Drinks too. The prices of meals in Vegas , just like accommodation prices, vary drastically.

Remember, in the US, it’s customary to add a 20% tip to your bill as well.

Having 2 meals out per day can quickly add up in Vegas, so it’s a good idea to book a hotel that includes lunch or dinner during your stay.

How much are Tourist Attractions in Las Vegas?

One of the best things to do in Las Vegas is to simply walk down the Strip , which costs absolutely nothing. You never know what you are going to see. Whether it’s a street performer putting on an incredible free performance, or the Fountains of Bellagio putting on a show, you can find all sorts of free things to see.

The Fremont Street Experience is another incredible thing to do which is completely free of charge. And of course, seeing all of the famous hotels and resorts in Vegas, like Caesars Palace, or the Venetian. Again, it costs nothing.

It begins to cost money to do things in Vegas when you either a) start to gamble or b) venture outside of the Strip.

If you choose to take a limo tour of Vegas or take a trip to the Hoover Dam, things are going to start getting pricey. It’s definitely worth doing though, the meaning of Las Vegas is “The Meadows” so you need to at least do something related to springs and bodies of water!

You can expect to pay around $60 for a trip to the Hoover Dam from Las Vegas, or $300+ if you choose to go by helicopter- which I recommend, it’s an unbelievable experience. Just look at that for a view!

As you can see, things to do in Vegas don’t cost a huge amount , so if you did 1 thing per day during a trip, it wouldn’t be too bad.

How expensive are Casinos in Vegas?

There really is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. What I will say is that some casinos have a minimum bet of $5 . So at a minimum, $5. Most casinos will be higher than this.

What I would recommend is that when you start to save money for your budget for a trip to Vegas, dedicate a certain amount to casinos and gambling. And then stick to it.

That way you aren’t getting caught up in the moment or spending money you don’t have, and it means you know in advance how much you are going to spend.

Because realistically, the chances of you winning a huge amount are quite low, you are basically paying for the experience. How much you are willing to pay is up to you, but I would recommend deciding in advance and not in the spur of the moment.

It depends on what you plan to do in Vegas. If you are going to gamble a lot, then yes, it’s expensive. Otherwise, it’s not actually that expensive to visit Vegas. Hotels aren’t priced too badly, and things to do are quite cheap. What is quite expensive is meals, meals cost quite a bit in Vegas.

A pint of draft beer will cost $4-5 in Vegas, which is in line with the average across the US of $4.75. Remember to drink responsibly in Vegas and don’t gamble too much after drinking too much.

It depends on where you eat, but for the most part, yes. An average meal per person costs $20-30 for a main course. If you want a starter or dessert and drinks, then add more to your budget.

Chef Ray Garcia’s ¡VIVA! hosts an excellent brunch every Saturday and Sunday that features elevated Mexican brunch favorites, in addition to boozy and bottomless beverages (we wouldn’t recommend this first thing since you’re going to have a packed day, but their Fresa Sandia is quite good if that’s the way your day is going). Get the Chorizo Con Huevos or the Chilaquiles with fresh, crispy heirloom corn tortilla chips and thank us later.

Mid-Morning

Take a stroll through the The District shopping esplanade where you’ll find 70,000 square feet of shopping in case that compact carry-on of yours couldn’t fit another clubbing shirt. The most eye-catching part of the area though is the 50-foot, LED-panel-covered Globe (affectionately called “The Orb” on our last trip) that’s definitely worth checking out. The Globe offers an immersive art experience, and you can catch a short show with synced lights and music every hour on the hour from noon to 1 a.m.

If you’re ready to fist-pump to a hot DJ set, but you also want to be in bed at a reasonable hour, slip into a swimsuit and head over to Ayu Dayclub . Resorts World’s Bali-inspired poolside party turns the weekend into a never-ending summer, with white daybeds and chic wooden cabanas you can rent if you’re not ready to pack into the pool with everyone else. Even if you’re just sipping a drink on dry land, it’s a certified vibe, and you might even get to see one of the repeat artists like Kaskade or T-Pain step up to the DJ booth.

That being said, if a “dayclub” isn’t your scene, we still suggest beating that Vegas heat and cooling off at one of the seven pools on property (including the only infinity pool on the Strip).

Early Evening

After a relaxing poolside afternoon soaking up some sun, go back to Famous Foods Street Eats and make your way to Ms. Meow’s Mamak Stall for a secret surprise. Amidst the small shop selling Asian snacks and adorned with lucky cats, ask the person behind the register at Ms. Meow’s to push the shelf-lined wall, and you can slip into the entrance of an intimate speakeasy, Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den. Open daily at 4 p.m., this relaxed and cozy spot seats 34 and serves up tropical cocktails into the wee hours. Sip on the “Hanami,” a sake drink with hints of sakura for a pre-dinner cocktail and take picks by the neon tiger on the exposed brick. But be sure to come here early after opening — this buzzy bar isn’t so much of a secret anymore, and fills up fast.

Now that you’ve had a drink (or two) and are ready for a night out, start with dinner at Wally’s , a beloved transplant from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The mouthwatering charcuterie boards are a can’t-miss, filled with peppery wagyu beef salami and L’Amuse Gouda, although the baguette stuffed with brie and a staggering amount of truffles (in the honey, butter, and shaved variety) is also a great choice. And with a selection of more 100 wines by the glass, pull up a chair, sip on a rare pour, and get ready for some of the best elevated comfort food on the Strip.

Late Evening

With so many bars, lounges, and concerts at Resorts World, you’ve already got a wide range of options for wherever you want the night to take you. Resorts World Theatre might be able to accommodate 5,000, but seeing a show there will feel more like you’re at an intimate club. It even boasts an immersive sound system designed by L-Acoustics. In other words, it sounds really freaking good, no matter where you’re sitting. See the biggest names in comedy like Kevin Hart, or get a front-row seat to Carrie Underwood — one of the year’s most-anticipated shows to see in Vegas. The Grammy winner’s Reflection residency kicked off November 2023, and just added more dates through 2024, so you don’t want to miss it.

Since it’s technically your last day in Vegas, you’re going to want to hit the ground running with some quick bites to keep that Vegas train rolling. Sun’s Out Buns Out single-handedly saved us during our last Vegas trip thanks to both a post-Zouk, late-night Furikake Fries, and a Bacon, Egg & Cheese the morning after. If you couldn’t already tell, there’s one key ingredient here: eggs. Sun’s Out Buns Out serves up egg dishes all day, every day, so grab a fast breakfast here to start your day sunny-side up.

In case you want to sleep in and skip breakfast to maximize your night owl potential, or are still hungry after breakfast, we love Fuhu’s high-energy dining room . It’s more than just a pregaming spot (although it’s a pretty great pregaming spot), it also has a stellar brunch with an Asian flair and hand-crafted signature drinks. Since it’s from Zouk Group, you can listen to DJs and special acts while you munch on scoops of king crab and truffle fried rice (there’s a lot of truffle in this town). The vibe is dark, stylish, and sexy, overall a highly Instagrammable spot.

Let’s slow things down for a little bit and take a break from the bustle of Vegas at the ultra-luxurious Awana Spa . Resorts World’s haven takes a more energetic approach to the spa experience, and socializing is encouraged here, where the Foot Spa Lounge is outfitted with TVs so you can catch any number of games while you ease your tired feet. Head over to the Fountain of Youth, which features six vitality pools, warming tepidarium chairs, steam rooms, cool mist showers and more — all while transportational videos play on a wraparound LED screen that shows you a calming film of the tops of snowy peaks or rushing waterfalls.

For a pre-dinner libation, take an elevator ride to the top of Resorts World to the Allē Lounge on 66 , a dimly lit, inviting spot with wood floors and plush velvet armchairs. The 66th-floor lounge is an elegant spot to sip craft cocktails like a Genting Old Fashioned (Highland Park 12 Year, Demerara Syrup, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and Regan’s Orange Bitters). But the main attraction here is the breathtaking view of the Strip from its floor-to-ceiling windows, especially when it’s lit up at night. There’s even a telescope so you can grab a closer peek.

It’s been a long (almost) 48 hours, but you should go out with a bang with a night out at the scene-y Zouk Nightclub. When the sun goes down, the vibes come to life, with high-tech lighting displays (seeing the laser light fixture descend down from the ceiling was the highlight of our last trip) and room-shaking sound. Why families are (again) betting on a trip to Las Vegas

You may think Las Vegas is the go-to destination for couples getaways and over-the-top bachelor and bachelorette parties. And, you'd be correct. However, for some, there can be much more to Vegas than just its adult-oriented scene. In fact, Sin City offers a surprising amount of amenities for families who want to make the trip to the city of neon.

Back in the 1990s, Las Vegas transformed itself into a kid-friendly megaresort, offering everything children could ever want in an attempt to attract more families ... and their dollars. There were arcades, theme parks , pirate fights and even erupting volcanoes, providing every member of the family something to enjoy.

But by the early 2000s, that effort was largely abandoned. Instead, Vegas once again embraced its adult playland persona. What happened in Vegas got out of the family scrapbooks and went back to staying in Vegas.

However, in recent years, Sin City has started to shift back toward being more relevant for families, a move which was likely only amplified by the coronavirus pandemic. Only 5% of Las Vegas visitors brought folks younger than 21 with them in 2019, according to a study by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority from that year. In 2021, though, that number increased to 21% , a massive jump that simply can't be ignored.

So if your idea of a good time in Las Vegas involves your kiddos, you're in luck: It turns out that Sin City can once again be a good gamble for families thanks to its array of fun activities, attractions and more.

Here is what to know if you are thinking about visiting Vegas with your family.

Why bring kids to Las Vegas?

Before we dive into the details of Vegas' family-friendly features, let's start with some reasons why travelers may consider bringing kids to Sin City.

First and likely foremost, it's an affordable city to visit. The average cost of a domestic round-trip flight to Vegas in 2022 is just $239.77 per person, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. That's not only less than the national average of $330 per person round-trip, but also less than what you'll spend on average to fly to top family vacation destinations like Orlando .

Because of its location, it is also a driveable destination for millions of Americans who could avoid flying altogether by loading up the minivan and driving to the city. And when you're ready to bed down for the night, you'll find a number of budget-friendly hotel rooms, even at the more luxurious end of the spectrum, as long as you avoid visiting during peak dates like long holiday weekends and major sporting events.

Beyond saving money, you'll also find that there are ample ways to enjoy your time here. Whether you and your little ones want to catch a show, get your heart racing on a thrilling ride or enjoy an eyeful of bright lights and characters, Vegas will keep your family entertained for hours.

Las Vegas can also be a great add-on destination for larger family outings in the American West. In addition to visiting Vegas, you could easily check out bucket list-worthy national parks like the Grand Canyon , Death Valley and Zion .

Road trips to other Nevada hot spots and places in nearby states are easily doable, too. Get your Route 66 kicks in Kingman, Arizona, which is about an hour and a half from Las Vegas, when you're not busy exploring old Arizona mining towns like Cornville, Clarkdale and Cottonwood. Or, head to Sedona, Arizona, for some time in nature hiking and biking. The desert town sits just 4 1/2 hours away from Vegas.

Free Las Vegas activities for the whole family

Las Vegas does more than offer affordable things to do. It's packed with activities that won't cost you a dime to experience.

Enjoy a photo-op at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign

Checking out this iconic spot at the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard is a can't-miss Sin City activity. Be sure to arrive early, as it's common to find long lines as the day progresses.

Watch the Bellagio fountain show

While the Bellagio Hotel & Casino's iconic fountain show is a must-visit during any Vegas vacation, you really shouldn't skip it when you're with your kids.

Located in front of MGM Resorts' Bellagio resort , the majestic waters dance to varied musical stylings every half hour until 8 p.m. and then every 15 minutes until midnight. Grab a spot along the front rail in the center of the lake for the best view.

Visit the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat

Nestled behind the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is an ideal spot for wildlife-loving kiddos. This 4-acre oasis holds waterfalls, streams and gardens teeming with exotic birds, fish, ducks and Chilean flamingos.

The habitat is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with two live feedings and keeper talks daily at 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Play in the Treehouse Playground

Downtown Container Park on historic Fremont Street is a lure for families. It's home to the Treehouse Playground, which features a 33-foot-tall slide, bridges and an interactive play system. Plus, there's a good selection of dining options — pizza, tacos and sandwiches — so be sure to grab lunch while you're here.

The playground area is open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. After that, only other parts of Downtown Container Park are open. However, they're limited to adults 21 and older, so plan your visit accordingly. Aim to visit around sunset when a drum circle to wake up the larger park's giant praying mantis sculpture takes place.

Check out the Silverton Casino Hotel's aquarium

Considered one of the city's best free attractions by many who've visited, the Silverton Casino Hotel's aquarium is a fun diversion. The 117,000-gallon aquarium is home to thousands of tropical fish — and even mermaids.

While the aquarium itself is open 24 hours a day, if you want to catch a glimpse of its mermaids swimming around the reef, time your visit for a Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. On these days, the mermaids make several appearances at select times.

The aquarium also hosts interactive stingray feedings daily at 1:30 p.m and 4:30 p.m.

Walk through the themed resorts

Paris, Egypt, the medieval era and more are all waiting for you in Vegas' themed resorts. Each is free to walk through, meaning you can take in all the over-the-top decor for as long as you like. Just be sure to avoid stopping in the resorts' casinos — most allow you to walk through with kids, so long as you don't stop and linger by the machines.

On a hot Vegas day, walking in and between the resorts can be tiring, so remember to pace yourself. You may want to limit yourself to one or two properties to avoid wearing your little ones out.

To keep cool and save time, make use of the free trams. There are three of them, and each runs about every 15 minutes.

The Aria Express Tram runs between Park MGM, Aria and the Bellagio. Meanwhile, the Mandalay Bay tram travels between the Excalibur, the Luxor and the Mandalay Bay hotels. Another tram that makes stops between The Mirage and Treasure Island is available as well.

Las Vegas attractions that are great for kids

There are many ways for families to enjoy their Vegas vacation. Whether you and your kiddos have an interest in futuristic attractions or marine encounters — or something else entirely — you'll find plenty of fun diversions. Here are a few you should check out.

This immersive bunker-style retail, dining and entertainment complex is just minutes from the Las Vegas Strip on South Rancho Drive.

The vibe here is a fantastic mesh of retro and futuristic. It's open every day and general admission is free, though timed-entry tickets are required for social distancing. Know, too, that certain experiences and exhibits cost extra.

The anchor exhibit here is the 52,000-square-foot Meow Wolf's Omega Mart installation, which costs a minimum of $40 for kids ages 4 to 13 and $45 for visitors 14 and up to experience. Filled with alien portals, funkadelic dystopian landscapes and mind-bending products you can buy, the funky space aptly bills itself as "America's Most Exceptional Grocery Store."

Another must is Wink World, created by Blue Man Group co-founder Chris Wink. This psychedelic art installation is brilliant, featuring a narrow hallway that leads you through six infinity mirror rooms alive with vibrant colors, sound, light and motion.

While a $14 to $18 fee (depending on age) applies to access this space, it's well worth a visit. Pay an extra $2.50 per person for the Chromadepth glasses. Your kids may think they look dorky to wear, but they really enhance your experience.

FlyOver Las Vegas

I'm a sucker for a good flight ride, and this one did not disappoint. It's on the Las Vegas Strip right next to the Hard Rock Cafe. During the ride, you'll sit suspended in front of a 52-foot circular screen. The platform you're on moves throughout the ride, with wind, mist and scents amplifying the real-life feel of it all.

We chose the "Real Wild West" option because it seemed like the perfect fit given our Nevada location. As we soared above the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and other destinations, I found myself eager to explore more state and national parks .

Single-ride tickets for FlyOver Las Vegas cost $30.60 for adults and $22.10 for kids 12 and younger when purchased in advance online. If you buy on-site, know that you'll spend a few bucks more per person. Children must be at least 40 inches tall to ride and sit with an adult or guardian who's at least 14 years old.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay

Prepare to feel transported to another world — one far below the water's surface — at Mandalay Bay's aquarium. As you explore this seemingly ancient sinking temple, you'll discover 15 species of sharks, stingrays, piranhas, endangered green sea turtles and a bevy of other marine life. There are even reptiles, including a python, a crocodile and a Komodo dragon.

Kids marveled at the aquarium's animals in every room we visited. I was especially enchanted by the underwater tunnel, as was everyone else who walked through.

Your basic ticket, which costs $29 for adults and $24 for kids 5 and older (little ones 4 and younger get in for free), includes entry to the main facility, plus the "Undersea Explorer" virtual reality experience set in the South Pacific. You can also pay for interactive animal programs like feedings with stingrays, sharks or sea turtles.

High Roller Observation Wheel

Thrill-seekers take note: The 550-foot-tall High Roller, North America's largest observation wheel, may offer the best seat in the house. It's the main attraction at The Linq Las Vegas Hotel + Experience, a hotel on the Strip featuring its own shopping, dining and entertainment district.

Each of the 28 air-conditioned, glass-enclosed cabins holds 40 passengers. The leisurely rotation takes about 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to take in the views.

Ticket prices start at $23.50 for adults and $8.50 for kids between 4 and 12, though the exact pricing varies depending on the time of day you ride. For the cheapest tickets, visit before 7 p.m.

Pinball Museum

This ginormous museum (it fits into an aircraft hangar) is just south of Mandalay Bay. You'll find about 200 games that range from vintage to modern — something for every age, for sure.

Some games here only cost a quarter to play. Also, parking is free, making this an ideal activity for budget-minded families.

Family-friendly shows in Las Vegas

Yes, Las Vegas is the ultimate playground for adults, so many of the city's shows cater to older visitors. However, there is an impressive lineup of kid-approved shows focusing on everything from acrobatics to magic.

The following are a few performances worth checking out:

• 'Blue Man Group': Think music, comedy, art, innovative technology and a touch of zany all combined into one attention-grabbing show. This iconic stage production, which is just as engaging and interactive as it is fun, is so popular that it now has a permanent spot at Luxor Hotel & Casino.
• 'Jabbawockeez': The first dance crew to headline the Strip, the Jabbawockeez is a group I fell in love with when I first saw them on an episode of "America's Got Talent." You can catch the group's dazzling special effects, high-energy music and impressive choreography at the MGM Grand , which has hosted the performers since 2015.
• 'Tournament of Kings': The must-visit show at Excalibur Hotel & Casino , "Tournament of Kings" features medieval shenanigans, eye-popping pyrotechnics and choreographed battle scenes — all while you savor period-appropriate fare. Best of all: If you have kids 3 or younger in tow, they watch for free, as entrance fees only apply for those 4 and older.
• 'Mystere by Cirque du Soleil': Catch this incredible show at Treasure Island Las Vegas for a dazzling performance that will wow both you and your kids. Debuting in 1993, this production is Cirque du Soleil's longest-running show. It features plenty of high-energy acrobatics, stunning visuals and mesmerizing tunes.
• 'Xavier Mortimer: The Dream Maker': Featuring Xavier Mortimer, the first Cirque du Soleil alum to star in his own residency, this magic-themed performance takes place at The Strat Hotel, Casino & SkyPod. Guests can expect an extraordinarily creative and visually dynamic show from its beguiling namesake.

As your kids get older, even more shows will become interesting and worth enjoying together.

Kid-friendly dining options in Las Vegas

Las Vegas celebrates excess. That philosophy certainly extends to the realm of dining.

There are a number of eateries serving all kinds of must-try dishes, ranging from pancake towers to larger-than-life desserts. Here are a few spots that will please — and likely even impress — the pickiest of eaters.

Maxie's Las Vegas

One of the dining options at The Linq Las Vegas Hotel + Experience, Maxie's specializes in next-level diner food. The menu features classic breakfast plates, a variety of burgers and sandwiches, a surf-and-turf platter, wings and scrumptious sides big enough to share (or not).

Achieve your sugar rush early by starting your day with Maxie's cotton candy pancakes. These berry-stuffed pancakes are layered with Fruity Pebbles-filled cream cheese and piled high with whipped cream and, of course, cotton candy.

Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer

A sister location to the New York City -based restaurant chain, this outpost in The Venetian Resort Las Vegas is the city's go-to spot for extravagant burgers and milkshakes.

Burgers here offer an innovative twist on the American classic, with each patty only flipped once on the griddle to ensure each creation is juicy.

Several of Black Tap's burgers have garnered accolades from around the world, including competition winners like The Mulberry Street Burger (a burger topped with provolone, hot cherry peppers, prosciutto, soppressata, roasted garlic aioli and freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano) and The Wagyu Steakhouse Burger (a half-pound wagyu beef burger featuring pepper jack cheese, bacon, crispy onions, A.1. Sauce and roasted garlic mayo).

The milkshakes are just as impressive. Each of Black Tap's signature CrazyShake milkshakes is just as whimsical and overflowing with ice cream and toppings as you may expect. Noteworthy options include The CakeShake, which is dressed in rainbow sprinkles and topped with a slice of funfetti cake, and the Churro Choco Taco, a Cinnamon Toast Crunch-flavored shake with toppings like a Choco Taco, churros, whipped cream and dulce de leche.

Hello Kitty Cafe Las Vegas

If you have Hello Kitty fans in your group, grab something sweet at this recent addition to the Strip.

Located inside the Fashion Show mall, this casual cafe is just as cute as you would imagine. Visitors can expect Hello Kitty-themed cakes, doughnuts, cupcakes and soft serve ice cream, as well as lemonades, coffee drinks and milk teas.

Snap a selfie in front of one of the playful backdrops and stock up on Hello Kitty merch before you leave.

Famous Foods at Resorts World Las Vegas

Not everyone in the family always wants exactly the same thing, so visiting a big food court in a resort can be a great way to let everyone get what they're craving without going to multiple restaurants. Famous Foods at Resorts World Las Vegas is a great example of one of these spots, though many casino resorts have them.

There's a variety of cuisines here for every palate. Enjoy smoked beef brisket at Blood Bros Texas Barbecue, sample traditional Shandong dumplings at Ah Chun Shandong Dumpling or head to Streetbird Las Vegas for some spicy fried chicken from James Beard Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson.

Las Vegas resorts that are good for families

Let's be real: Most of Vegas' resorts weren't built with 8-year-olds in mind, but that doesn't mean families have limited options here. There are several Sin City hotels that cater to both kids and adults.

And remember, Las Vegas is a fantastic spot for those with access to the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program via The Platinum Card® from American Express as there are many properties that participate and provide breakfast, late checkout, property credits and more.

Mandalay Bay

Situated at the southernmost end of the Strip, the 120-acre Mandalay Bay offers a quieter setting than other major resorts that are more centrally located, making it a solid choice for families. The sprawling pool complex, abundant dining venues and multitude of on-site entertainment options give visitors — families included — a lot to love.

Of all Mandalay Bay's amenities, few are as ideal for kids as Mandalay Bay Beach, the resort's 11-acre pool facility. Arguably one of the city's best pool complexes, it's composed of four distinct pool areas, including one with a massive wave pool (complete with a sand beach). Keep in mind, though, that kids must be at least 48 inches tall to enter.

In addition to the wave pool, families will want to check out the pool complex's lazy river. It's one of only three available in Las Vegas.

Spring for a pool cabana (starting at $300 a day) for a little extra privacy and convenience, especially if you have smaller ones who need a break from the sun. It includes a dining area, two or three lounge chairs, a minifridge stocked with beverages and a personal safe.

When you're ready to retire for the night, choose from 3,600 rooms and suites with spacious bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light. At 550 square feet, the resort rooms with two queen-size beds offer ample space for a family of four.

If you really want to spread out, splurge on the 1,450-square-foot Panoramic Two Bedroom Suite. It sleeps up to six people and features two bathrooms (perfect for families with teens).

While the rooms come equipped with stocked minifridges, water bottles and snacks, know that provided items are not complimentary and that you can't use the minifridge for personal items, which was a bummer for us on a recent trip. Even if you shuffle things around to accommodate items you bring, you could be hit with charges due to the minifridge's weight-based sensors.

Standard rooms at Mandalay Bay start at $199 or from 17,000 to 23,000 World of Hyatt points per night, depending on the dates of your visit.

Currently, World of Hyatt members can earn twice as many World of Hyatt points thanks to a newly launched MGM Rewards program . World of Hyatt members can also tier match with MGM Rewards and take advantage of show discounts, guaranteed room rates and other exclusive perks.

The Boulevard, a Hilton Grand Vacations Club

This Hilton timeshare, which sits on the north end of the Strip, is designed with families in mind.

Available to both those who own and do not own accommodations here, the property's guest rooms and suites offer plenty of space for those with kids in tow.

The spacious studios include kitchenettes with sinks, coffee makers, toasters, minifridges, dishes and utensils. Meanwhile, multibedroom suites feature well-equipped kitchens, as well as washers and dryers. Some larger suites also offer living rooms and dining areas.

This is a non-gaming resort, so families with small kiddos won't have to worry about navigating around a casino while on the resort grounds, which include a number of age-appropriate amenities.

Kids of all ages will love the expansive pool area, which is shaded by lots of towering palm trees, while teens can take advantage of on-site activities like basketball, tennis and pingpong. There are even free circus shows available next door at Circus Circus Hotel and Casino, should your children need a longer distraction.

Guests can currently snag a three-night stay for $249 per night and earn 15,000 Hilton Honors points. The only catch? You must attend a two-hour timeshare sales promotion to receive these points.

If you'd rather cover the cost of your stay with points, expect to cash in at least 38,000 Hilton Honors points for a standard room.

Resorts World Las Vegas

If your brood loves a good pool day or just wants to stay at the newest spot, this is the resort for you. It recently made our list of the 10 best hotel pools in the U.S. — and for good reason.

Welcoming guests since 2021, this Hilton-affiliated complex is the first integrated resort built on the Strip in 10 years. It's composed of three different hotels: the Las Vegas Hilton at Resorts World, the Conrad Las Vegas at Resorts World and Crockfords Las Vegas, LXR Hotels & Resorts.

Resorts World features the largest pool complex on the Las Vegas Strip, offering three pools within the resort's main pool area. There's a dedicated family pool, which is a good size and offers several fun water elements that will keep kids entertained for hours.

Level up your poolside experience by reserving a private cabana. It comes with perks like a misting fan, a couch, a TV, a minifridge and lounge chairs, among other amenities.

When your family gets hungry, head to one of 40 on-site food and beverage venues, several of which offer a casual setting ideal for kids.

There are numerous dining options in addition to the eateries available within Famous Foods. Grab a slice (or a whole pie) at Mulberry Street Pizzeria, or visit Crossroads Burger for plant-based sausages, burgers and chicken nuggets so good that you won't even miss the meat.

As far as accommodations go, you'll find 3,506 guest rooms and suites here, so you have all sorts of options to choose from. Of the three properties, Conrad Las Vegas is probably the best option for families. It offers spacious rooms, some with pullout couches. You can also request a free crib or a rollaway bed for a fee. The Hilton is also a solid choice.

Rooms at the Conrad start at $167 per night for a Premium Room with two queen-size beds. For those who wish to use points, there's the option to cash in at least 42,000 Hilton Honors points for a room.

Circus Circus

A story about families in Las Vegas isn't complete without a nod to Circus Circus and its iconic, pink Adventuredome amusement park.

It's fair to say that the property is not the newest on the block. In fact, it's fair to say it has aged. But ... renovations are underway. This has included the pool, adding new younger-kid-friendly rides to the Adventuredome and is also expected to ultimately include the hotel rooms.

Bottom line

There's plenty to do in Las Vegas beyond the typical adult diversions synonymous with a getaway to Sin City. Families keen on visiting Vegas will find all kinds of ways to pass the time, including engaging aquariums, unique dining spots and thrilling indoor and outdoor rides.

However, those with kids are not limited to what's available within Vegas' city limits. You can easily add a daytrip to nearby attractions like the Hoover Dam for even more adventures. Not to mention, national parks, ghost towns and more sit within a few hours of the city, so you can combine your trip to Vegas with an epic road trip through the Southwest.

With so much to see and do, one thing is clear: If you want to, you can bet on Vegas to show you and your family a pretty good time.

Doing Vegas By Yourself? Here’s What to Expect – With Tips!

Thinking about taking a solo trip to Vegas, but are wondering what the experience will be like?

First off, you’re not alone. According to a Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority profile survey , 11% of visitors reported that they made the trip by themselves in 2021.

That means nearly 4.2 million people visited Sin City on their own in 2022 – Not an insignificant sum.

In fact, doing Vegas solo has become so popular, that there’s an entire ecosystem of resources growing around the trend. Among the most useful is the “Solo Las Vegas” Facebook group which has amassed 33,000+ members and is chock-full of tips, tricks, and ideas.

As a frequent solo traveler myself, I figured it’d be helpful to share my experience and help you brainstorm some things to do in Vegas by yourself.

The Reality of Visiting Solo – What is it Like?

Although packed to the gills with people, Vegas is a strangely anonymous destination.

Visitors can float from place to place, and activity to activity, with as much or as little interaction as they desire.

Personally, I enjoy the anonymity and time to “be in my own head”. Almost like a long drive by yourself, doing Vegas solo can provide the opportunity to spend some time with… you.

For those of you who are extroverts who cringe at the thought of limited interaction, you don’t need to be isolated. Social contact and new friendships are easy to make at a craps table, at bars, clubs, etc. If you’re outgoing and want to be around people, that is absolutely within the realm of possibilities.

The ability to do WHAT you want, WHEN you want, at YOUR own speed, is what makes being on your own special.

Note that not everything about doing Vegas by yourself is sunshine and rainbows. For those who value having others around, not being able to share highs and lows with others in a city with plenty of swings can be a challenge.

As an extrovert myself, I find that face-timing the family back home can help combat any feelings of loneliness that creep in.

Is Doing Vegas By Yourself Safe?

Absolutely.

With that being said, you obviously want to take the same precautions you would at home or any other travel destination, but there’s a heavy security presence on both the Strip and Fremont Street.

I’d recommend sticking to tourist centers, especially after dark. For instance, exploring the side streets behind Fremont Street after dark isn’t recommended due to the prevalence of a more transient, unpredictable crowd.

Just stick with the crowds, and take typical precautions.

Dining Solo in Vegas

Dining out in Vegas by yourself can feel strange and you’ll feel it the first time you say “Yep, just me” at the hostess desk, but seriously, the sensation passes quickly.

My main concern tends to be how I’m perceived by the staff, as solo diners usually equate to a lower bill and thus, less tip money. Cognisant of that, I always try to eat quickly and tip well. I know, I know, it’s not my problem… but I can’t shake the thought.

Oftentimes, I simply opt for quick, cheap quick-serve restaurants in food courts which helps avoid the awkward “dining alone” scenario.

My favorite option for dining solo in Vegas, however, is at higher-end Strip buffets. Grabbing dinner at Wicked Spoon at Cosmopolitan , Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace , or The Buffet at Wynn allows me to feel more comfortable due to the degree of anonymity offered by their self-serve nature.

Upscale buffets allow me to eat high-quality food at my own pace.

Things To Do in Vegas By Yourself

Seriously. Gambling solo in Vegas is the best. No waiting on others. Nobody waiting on you. Nobody looking over your shoulder. Nobody judging the amount you’re spending.

Jump from machine to machine, play some blackjack, or make friends at the craps table. This is how I spend my solo time in Vegas – It’s great.

Go For a Hike

I’d be hard-pressed to pull my wife or friends away from the Strip to go for a hike, but exploring nature has quickly become one of my favorite activities.

Among my recent outdoor adventures near Las Vegas have been visits to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area , the St. Thomas Ghost Town site, and the Valley of Fire State Park .

You haven’t lived until you turn a corner in the middle of the desert by yourself and find that you’re face to face with 3 bighorn sheep.

While the Hoover Dam is a man-made wonder, it’s also something I recently explored on my own , and found to be amazing.

High-End Shopping

If your normal Vegas crew doesn’t share your desire to shop, add it to your itinerary! I suggest checking out the North & South Premium Outlet Malls, Plaza Shops at Wynn, Crystals, and the Bellagio Shops.

All offer luxury brands in a visually appealing setting.

Explore the Arts District

Tucked between STRAT and Fremont Street, the Arts District offers 18 blocks of shopping, art, breweries, bars, and restaurants.

I detest shopping typically, but shops in the Arts District were sincerely fun to visit and range from art galleries to antique shops. As a Vegas history nerd, I was thrilled to find an abundance of vintage casino memorabilia, matchbooks, ashtrays, chips, etc.

The Arts District can be reached inexpensively from the Strip via the Deuce Bus , and for free from Fremont Street via the Downtown Loop Shuttle .

Eat a High-End Meal

Treat yourself to a meal you wouldn’t necessarily splurge on if you were paying for 2 or more people. I suggest a restaurant with a view of the Fountains of Bellagio .

When traveling with others, you need to compromise on a show that everyone will enjoy. When in Vegas solo, you’re in control.

See the male revue , burlesque show , comedy , or Cirque du Soleil show you have always craved.

Explore a Museum that Interests YOU

Often overlooked, Las Vegas is home to numerous museums that are a blast to explore if your interests align with the content.

I’ve enjoyed exploring the following niche museums in Las Vegas :

If you’re a pool person, spend your day wasting away beneath the Nevada sun.

My solo trips to Vegas are much different than those with others. Trips by myself tend to be less of a party, and more of a relaxing experience. Among my favorite things to do is get a little day drinking in by the pool, or in the casino followed by a nap before going out for the night.

Spending time at a Las Vegas spa is something that could pull you away from your group if traveling with others. Splurge on a spa day – You deserve it.

Whether you’re traveling to Vegas solo for a convention, or for some much-needed time away from reality, rest assured, there is plenty to do.

With itinerary options that include relaxing by the pool, napping, gambling, or being social with strangers, I trust you’ll have a great time.

I'll be going to America for 3-4 weeks.

We are also thinking of going to Florida as part of the trip.

Disney World looks like a really wonderful place. I've only been to Disneyland in HK and DisneySea in Tokyo once.

Although I've heard although everything is set up for you, you need to plan well, you need to pre-book everything like hotels and restaurants. You need to invest in at least 3-4 days there and that there can be long wait times for

And what about Miami ? I enjoy the beach, but the other places like LA and NY you want to allocate as much time into those places as possible as they have so much to offer in things to do.

Not sure how Houston made the list but San Antonio is a wonderful city. Stay on the Riverwalk and get around by boat. Lots of good food and history.

While in Miami if its not the summer months and you like nature I would include a trip to the Everglades. The keys are beautiful too but do not have the miles of beaches the rest of Florida has. They do have small beaches and beautiful water. Again you would want 3-4 days there if you decided to add it in.

There is also a Brightline train between Orlando and Miami now that you might consider using for transport between the 2 major cities. If you stay on Disney property and only want to do things Disney you would not need a car and could use the train to get to or from Miami.

If you rent a car in Miami there are many cashless toll roads the require SunPass on the rental car and not all companies charge the same. See http://www.sunpass.com for rates.

Even though I like Miami , it’s not in the same league as these other Cities. If you really want to go to Disney World, you need at least 4-5 days and it takes a great deal of planning to get the most out of your visit and avoid long lines and wait times for many rides and attractions. You might want to post on the Orlando forum which is very active with repeat visitors for more advice.

Well the reason we're going to Houston is because we are meeting up with family friends who are from there. But don't plan to stay for more than a few days.

And to be more specific the time we're going to for 1 month is between late September to late October.

Disney ? You could just do a day at Magic Kingdom (or one of the other parks). It would take a little bit of planning but you could figure it out. YOu have plenty of time (though the most popular restaurants do get booked at that 60 days in advance mark so plan for that). You could just do Universal/IOA the other days as it's way easier to be spontaneous there.

It is hurricane season in the fall- that affects both Texas and Florida .

I agree with SDT on DC great place with lots of free things to see and do. And the public transportation is good so you don't need a car .

When in San Fransisco if you want to do the tour of Alcatraz go onto the National Parks web site and book your seats as soon as you can and take the early am first boat if possible to avoid crowds.

Miami / Miami Beach is another interesting place to visit but looking at your time frame I think I would leave it out and concentrate on Ca. and NY due to travel times using up a good bit of your stay.

That being said, if you do go to Disney/ Orlando there is a train Brightline that runs Orlando to Miami that you could utlilze instead of driving.

Las Vegas Sphere: What to expect if you go. Who's performing this summer?

The Vegas Strip is a quick jet up the I-15 North from the High Desert. Along the casino-infiltrated, neon-lit street of "Sin City," a massive animated dome catches the eye against the horizon. It's the Las Vegas Sphere.

It's hard to miss the Las Vegas Sphere from anywhere on Sands Avenue, near the Venetian Resort and Caesars Palace. The digital anomaly is the newest attraction on the Vegas Strip, leaving many to question what exactly is the "Sphere?"

The Sphere is an immersive entertainment experience, complete with 580,000 square feet of LED lights and nearly 17,500 seats. Fifteen artists helped create the 3D artwork displayed on the outside of the animated orb 24/7.

The visuals truly make the music experience a transformative one. Because the venue is so new, however, there are still many unanswered questions.

Luckily, I've made trips to the Sphere for the past four weekends and am starting to become somewhat of a Sphere local. Here's what I gathered as answers to commonly asked questions regarding the Sphere, both from experience and research:

Where are the best seats in the Sphere?

There are five levels inside the Sphere, divided into a general admission floor and seating at the 100- 400 levels. In my experience, the 300—and 400-level seats are the best for the visuals.

The audio, however, is the best on the floor level. According to the Sphere, their sound system is the "world's most advanced audio system, powered by Holoplot," but the sound was somewhat muted in the 400-level seats.

Some songs were even a little muted from the 100-level seats but were considerably better than the higher levels. Some 100-level seats also have a partially obstructed view due to an overhanging balcony, so be sure your ticket has a full view before purchasing.

The general admission floor standing tickets are the best for sound but it's harder to get a full grasp of the visuals from that level. The floor is also the best place for dancing and close-up views of the bands.

Can you dance inside the Sphere?

There is tons of room on the general admission floor for dancing, especially along the left and right rails. Classic Grateful Dead fans called Spinners dance without limits on these sides, twirling and arm waving to the music to their hearts' content.

I witnessed security enforcing no dancing in the walkways, but dancing is allowed in front of any seat in the Sphere.

Pro Tip: Floor tickets are typically more expensive than regular tickets because they're the closest to the band. Save some money on tickets by purchasing on the  Cash or Trade  after-sale ticket app.

Can you get motion sickness in the Sphere?

The only place I got motion sickness in the Sphere was in the 100-level seats. At that level, I truly felt like I was flying along with the visuals, but some of the spinning or rotating graphics did cause dizziness.

Motion sickness is different for everyone. Colton Mussman attended his first show at the Sphere on Saturday, June 1. He said he loved the visuals but had to continuously step out of the show due to motion sickness in the 400-level seats.

"The graphics were insane but man, it was making me sick," he said. "I was nauseous and getting vertigo for the first 45 minutes of the show, but when I finally adjusted to it, the show was awesome."

I recommend closing your eyes or taking a restroom break at the first sign of nausea.

What's the bag purse policy at the Sphere?

The Sphere does not enforce a plastic bag purse policy like other major venues. They do, however, restrict purses to dimensions of 6 inches by 6 inches by 2 inches. Although I successfully brought in a slightly larger bag multiple times before I knew about the size restriction.

Consider sporting a fanny pack for hands-free grooving and quicker access to recording devices.

Can you take photos and videos during the Sphere experience?

Yes! Photos and videos are allowed and absolutely encouraged inside the Sphere. It's almost impossible not to document the unusually abstract experience.

I did, however, witness security telling a concertgoer to turn the brightness down on their phone to not distract others from the LED roller coaster happening on the big screen.

Feel free to take countless photos and videos but be courteous to others and try to enjoy the music organically, without livestreaming its entirety.

Are outside food and drinks allowed in the Sphere?

Outside food and drinks are not allowed inside the Sphere. They are available for purchase at concession stands on every level of the venue.

A tall can of beer is around $20 to $25 and a bag of chips is $4 to $5. The Vegas Sphere is also a cashless venue, so be sure to deposit the banknotes beforehand.

The Sphere is connected to the Venetian Resort on the strip. It may be a good idea to gamble before showtime for free drinks if on a budget. Additionally, Sphere guests can bring their own clear, empty bottles and fill up at any of the venue's drinking fountains.

• The Sphere Experience, including Darren Aronofsky's "Postcard From Earth," year-round
• Dead & Company, weekends until Aug. 10
• 2024 NHL Draft, June 28

What are people saying about the Sphere?

"The sphere experience was like the 8th wonder of the world," said Marley Johnson, long-time Deadhead, Shakedown Street vendor, and recent Sphere concertgoer. "It was almost hard to comprehend like an astronaut trying to explain space travel to a caveman."

Like most who've experienced the surreal 360-degree visuals, Johnson said her experience was "pretty rad."

Griff Kohout has been to hundreds of Grateful Dead-variant shows. He spoke to the Daily Press about what intrigued him about the Dead & Company show at the Sphere.

"The Sphere is truly a next-level immersive experience," he said. "In the corporate behemoth of Sin City, the Sphere has given The Dead and their legion of fans a timely world stage platform to keep creating and spreading the peace."

Kohout said he was skeptical about the Sphere and not sure what to expect or how the LED adventure would alter the music experience, but "the vibes were as great as ever."

Past performances at the Sphere

U2:UV Achtung Baby was the first live performance at the Sphere. Visuals of Matrix-like coding symbols backed the "Joshua Tree" band as they performed hits like "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "With or Without You."

The jam band Phish was the second to headline at the Sphere. Whacky songs like "Bathtub Gin" were played while flying rainbow automobiles raced toward the audience on the 160,000-square-foot screen. Sacred geometrical shapes and melting visuals also accompanied the music during the four-show residency.

Dead & Company, a reincarnation of the original Grateful Dead band, is the current house band at the Sphere. Playing from mid-May until mid-August, the band is comprised of two original Grateful Dead members, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, as well as the younger John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti, and Jay Lane.

Gound-to-floor visuals for Dead & Company include taking the audience along for a deep-sea dive during songs like "Lost Sailer," to the great Egyptian pyramids during "Ramblin' Rose," and racing along the Mario Kart Rainbow Road during songs like "Help on the Way."

What to expect at the Sphere during Dead & Company performances?

Dead & Company has a residency at the Sphere from May 24 to August 10.

The Grateful Dead have been around since 1965 and have since taken many different psychedelic shapes. The band has had more members in its history than any other rock 'n' roll band (yes, even more than Van Halen) and many more spin-off bands, like Dead & Company, since lead singer and guitar player Jerry Garcia died.

What didn't change after his death, however, was fan support. The type of extreme fans that frequent the shows today bring the same energy as fans who saw the band live at Woodstock.

Tie-dye wearing hippies with long hair and long skirts called Deadheads caravan between shows in vans and motorhomes, selling art, food, and clothes on Shakedown Street — an illicit farmers market outside of every concert venue.

Shakedown Street for the Sphere shows can be found on the second floor of the Tuscany Suites and Casino every show day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., only a 15-minute walk from the Sphere.

Buying a tie-dye outfit or show art from vendors ranging from original Heads to new, younger fans is a Grateful Dead show tradition.

Another characteristic of Deadheads is the request for a "miracle ticket." Fans with signs at their booths, strapped around their necks, or written directly onto their skin with permanent marker hope to strike gold with a free ticket to the show, generously donated by other fans with an extra.

It's common to see tens of Deadheads outside of the Sphere with fingers in the air looking for a "miracle."

Lastly, a huge part of Deadhead culture is the way the fans dance. Dancers called "Spinners" crowd the left and right rails of the general admission floor, spinning out of orbit in coma-inducing unison like the Whirling Dervishes to the music.

Long skirts that spin like open umbrellas can be expected at every show at the Sphere until the Dead & Company residency expires.

Britney Spears has spent time reuniting with her nearest and dearest in recent years, and now you can add her ex-fiancé, and former co-conservator, Jason Trawick to that list ... TMZ has learned.

Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ ... Britney got together with Jason during her trip to Las Vegas last week with her brother Bryan . We're told she and her bro are still tight with Jason, and they reached out to him to say they were going to be in town and would love to catch up.

Our sources also tell us Jason now lives in Vegas so the meet-up totally made sense -- and they wound up hanging out together, on at least one occasion, at Resorts World Las Vegas.

Jason was a huge rock in Britney's life during their romantic stint from 2009 to 2013. They got engaged in 2011, and even though they called it off ... we're told they've stayed cordial since the split.

We know what you're thinking, but there's nothing romantic going on between them right now -- we're told it's just friendly.

However, it's also true that some people close to Britney are cautiously optimistic about a possible romantic reunion in the future. To be clear, though, our sources stressed that's not where Brit and Jason's heads are right now.

Nonetheless, the Jason hang sounds like it was a nice bonus for Britney, who also documented her fun-filled Vegas spa session with her bro for IG.

In a post made to Instagram, Britney vividly described how much she’s been enjoying Sin City, which she’s very familiar with thanks to her residency a few years back. "Me in Vegas with alcohol, food and spas… it's a constant orgasmic experience. Thank you, Jesus! Swipe to see my adorable hotel @resortsworldlv!!" she wrote.

While Britney seems to be enjoying herself, the good times may not last. Recent reports suggest that, alongside her ongoing mental health challenges, the singer is spending more money than she has on high-end hotels and luxury vacations. Before her time in Vegas, she was spotted living it up in Hawaii, where her two sons relocated to last year with their father, Kevin Federline.

Britney Allegedly Spends $1 Million On Each Trip

According to TMZ, each of her trips costs her around a million dollars, largely due to her use of luxurious services, including private jets and high-end accommodations. So, her recent trip to the city of lights could make a huge dent in her bank account. Britney’s net worth is reportedly $60 million.

"She cannot afford this. She had $60 million when the conservatorship ended, and she's now where the conservatorship started -- in danger of going broke,” a source told the publication.

There have been rumblings Britney may be forced into a conservatorship again given her recent behavior, including the fight at Chateau Marmont involving her controversial boyfriend, Paul Richard Soliz , which resulted in paramedics being called to attend to Britney’s ankle injury.

“Those same fan accounts were stirring anew, prompting a resurgence of an online FreeBritney movement that she credited with helping to end her conservatorship,” The Guardian claimed . “They see the Chateau Marmont incident as part of an effort to place her back under that control. Dueling narratives emerged. Some said conservatorship also exposed her to the same forces that may have triggered it in the first place.”

“She has no concept of money. For over a decade, other people were in charge of her bank accounts, and every purchase had to be reported to the court — even if it was just a pack of gum. But now, she’s on her own,” a source told Page Six .

Though the reports of financial distress continue, Britney has refused to address them, rather preferring to post recent pictures from her luxury trips, even if they are indeed lowering her net worth.

Senior Director of Content Laura Motta loves the American West for its intense beauty, endless layers of human and natural history, and its full-on sense of weirdness. She took a road trip from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park. Here's what she encountered on the way.

• When to arrive: Arrive at Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport as early in the day as you can. This road trip requires a lot of driving in remote areas, and you'll want to reach your lodging in the town of Ely while it's daylight.
• Getting there: Great Basin National Park is about 300 miles from either Las Vegas or Salt Lake City , making it one of the most remote national parks in the US. To reach it, you will have to drive. And drive. Book a rental car that can handle inclines and dirt or rocky roads. If you attempt this road trip in the winter –  not recommended for those who don't have experience driving in tough weather conditions –   you will also need snow chains for your tires. I did this trip solo, but would recommend doing it with a partner so you can switch-off being in the driver's seat.
• Getting around: You'll spend much of this trip on Nevada Rte 93. Pay attention to roadside signs for gas. Stretches of this road run hundreds of miles without a single gas station, and you don't want to get stuck. It's also a good idea to pack water and snacks. Parts of Great Basin are 13,000ft above sea level and it's not uncommon to see light snow cover and overnight frosts from spring to fall. In winter, expect feet of snow and road closures.
• What to pack: A trip from Vegas to Great Basin means packing for two climates —  the burning Mojave and the arid high desert. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must for the trails in Great Basin National Park. Pack layers, as you can expect cool or even cold weather at night. For Vegas? Shorts for daytime, a cocktail getup for evening and a swimsuit should do it. One thing you'll need and use in both places: sunblock and sunglasses.

Day 1: Route 93 to Ely

Take a look around.

As you drive north out of Las Vegas along US Rte 93, the Great Basin Highway, the flat desert falls away and the mountains rise up on either side. They are green, then craggy brown, then blue-gray in the distance. This is America at its most expansive and mind-bogglingly beautiful, and the view out your car windows is as much your "destination" as anything else you'll see on this trip.

See if the truth is out there

Two hours north of Las Vegas, Rte 93 intersects with Rte 375 —  a desolate stretch of road known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. This is as close as you'll get to Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force base that spawned persistent conspiracy theories and rumors of alien research. Knowing visitors are forbidden, I made a quick stop in the town of Hiko instead to visit some quirky and definitely unclassified sites that capture the area's kitsch factor. E.T. Fresh Jerky is a gift shop that specializes in "alien" (actually beef) jerky. It makes a good snack for the drive. Plus, there are some fun, photo-ready items in the parking lot (a giant "crashed" space ship, a mural of otherworldly creatures). Just up the road, another gift shop called the Alien Research Center is where you'll find shot glasses, t-shirts and stickers adorned with little green men.

Stretch your legs and grab lunch or a snack in the town of Caliente. I had a quesadilla at Knotty Pine , where you can enjoy the vintage vibes and play slot machines in the bar. You should also get gas in town, so take the opportunity to fuel up even if your tank isn't empty.

Worship at nature's cathedral 

Just past Caliente on Rte 93, you'll reach Cathedral Gorge State Park . This dramatic canyon, formed by eroded rock and clay, looks like a giant melting layer cake. It has some easy trails near the park entrance that can be completed in less than hour. Note that the park requires advance reservations for entry at peak times.

Hit the hay

By the time you reach the town of Ely, you will have earned a rest. I stayed at the Motel 6 (spotless, with especially welcoming staff) and the historic Hotel Nevada (Old West vibes, lots of taxidermy in the lobby).   

Day 2: Great Basin National Park

Get to know the park.

Drive about an hour west of Ely to reach Great Basin National Park, which is known for snow-capped peaks and an intricate cave system. There are also groves of rare, twisty limbed bristlecone pines, some of which are thought to be more than 5000 years old.

Go spelunking

Start your morning by descending into Lehman Caves , the park's central attraction and a must-see on any visit. The caves are classified as their own national monument and have their own parking lot and visitors center within the wider national park. Book a tour with a park ranger (30, 60 or 90 minutes, prices vary) to see enormous stalagmites and stalactites, underground lakes and the few living organisms that call the cave home.

Take a hike (or two)

After you see the caves, hop back in your car and drive the winding uphill road –   an experience unto itself –   toward Wheeler Peak. I parked in the lot well before the summit and set out from there on foot. There are trailheads here that lead to a few different, equally awe-inspiring sights,   including the bristlecone pine groves and Nevada's last glacier. I chose the Alpine Lakes Loop , a relatively flat trail that leads to the sparkling lakes Teresa and Stella. On the way, I crunched my way through light snow cover, snapped too many photos of soaring Wheeler Peak and enjoyed the crisp air. A good option is to try one trail earlier in the day, drive back to Lehman Caves for a quick lunch in the visitors center, and then pick another one to do in the afternoon. A word of caution, however: Some of these trails are labeled "easy," but the park's elevation adds a level of difficulty. Bring enough water, wear layers and pace yourself. 

Day 3: In and around Ely

Soak up some nevada nostalgia .

Copper mining and a prime location along Nevada's Pony Express route —  these are the things that built the town of Ely. The town is a good base for exploring Great Basin National Park, but it also allows easy access to a few other whimsical, slightly strange sights that make a fun add-on to a national park trip.

Make it malted

Pull up a vintage red-and-chrome seat at the soda fountain at Economy Drug , which opened for business in 1946. Excellent sandwiches and vintage-style sodas are menu standouts, but you can also order malts, milkshakes and ice cream. And of course, if you run out of toothpaste or sunblock, you can get it here, too. True to its name, Economy Drug remains a working pharmacy.

Ride the rails

It's hard to find a more charming spot in Ely than its impeccably preserved train station, which is part of the Nevada Northern Railway . Not only does this organization maintain the station and all of its adjacent buildings, it also preserves and runs a collection of vintage locomotives and train cars. Book a trip on one of them to go stargazing in the desert, view a fireworks display, learn about geology or sip champagne. Programming rotates and is oriented to the season. You can also tour the station itself. 

Search for treasure

Garnet Hill is a designated "rockhounding" area, or a place that's open to the public for geological treasure hunting. Drive up the steep dirt road as far as you can go, park, and then walk up the hill about 20 minutes to reach the best hunting spots. The hill is named for the dark red gems that are common in the area, but you're more likely to find other kinds of wonders close to the surface — namely, bits of petrified wood and fossils. I found a fragment of a trilobite —  a prehistoric marine animal that would have lived on this spot more than 250 million years ago —  and burst into tears at the wonder of it.

See what's left of a mining boom

Just off of Rte 50, about 30 minutes from Ely, you'll find one of the oddest, and most oddly enchanting, sites in the area. The Ward Charcoal Ovens , each one standing more than 30ft tall in a vast tract of open desert, were where charcoal was made for the smelting of silver in the 1800s. The nearby mining town would be wrecked by flood and fire by the close of the 19th century, but the stone ovens remain. You can even dart inside them to get a closer look at their open, beehive like design. 

Day 4: Las Vegas

Get back to sin city.

If you drove up to Ely via Rte 93, you can take an alternate road, Rte 318, back to Vegas. It affords different views of the mountains and saves about 30 minutes of driving. On my last night in Nevada, I opted for a few simple Las Vegas pleasures —  a terrifying museum and a perfect martini. I started at the Atomic Museum , which unflinchingly charts the history of atomic energy and weaponry. For more than 40 years starting in the 1950s, the area north of Las Vegas was America's official nuclear testing site. (In the 1950s, postcards showed an illustration of a Vegas showgirl wearing a mushroom cloud as a costume.)

Exhibits go deep on technology and history, but also examine the ethics of nuclear war, and even of the testing site itself. That evening, I headed to Delilah for a drink — and I definitely needed one. This supper club-slash-nightclub has live big-band-style music, simple food that hits the spot (the chicken fingers are a favorite) and impeccable cocktails, all in an atmosphere that feels like a throwback to gilded Rat Pack-era Las Vegas. This is the one spot on your trip where you'll be asked to put away your cell phone and just enjoy —  and it's so good that you won't mind.
