Easy-to-use travel guide for Belize

Where to Go Kayaking and Canoeing in Belize

July 8, 2023 By Lorenzo Gonzalez Leave a Comment

Belize sea kayaking in Glovers Reef

Belize is a beautiful nature-based destination to go kayaking and canoeing. In the mainland, canoe trips reign supreme as most of the rivers meander gently through the Belizean jungle , allowing for seclusion in nature with plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities on the river banks.

As you move east to the Caribbean Sea, the best way to explore the coast is by kayak , allowing for easy maneuvering around the many Belizean cayes and atolls. Cradled by the Belize Barrier Reef , these islands are surrounded by calm waters, allowing for sea kayaking to be accessible to people of all ages.

Best Kayaking and Canoeing in Belize

Whether you choose to explore Belize by canoe or kayak, I suggest you seek out the 8 destinations listed below. I’ve included a mix of offshore atolls that are primarily sought out for off-the-beaten-path adventures and popular tourist spots that are easily accessible by most visitors.

1. Glover’s Reef Atoll

kayaking in belize

Glover’s Reef is the quintessential destination for kayaking in Belize. Comprised of five cayes and home to the Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve , the atoll is known for its stunning natural beauty and biodiversity. Sitting right next to the barrier reef, 27 miles off the coast of Southern Belize, outfitters such as Island Expeditions offer kayaking expeditions to eco-tourists looking for a remote adventure filled with watersport activities.

2. Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Half Moon Caye is a part of Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Located about 50 miles off the coast of Central Belize, Lighthouse Reef is another ideal destination for kayaking enthusiasts. Primarily known as the home of the famous Great Blue Hole , the atoll boasts six cayes, vibrant coral reefs, and crystal clear waters with diverse marine life. Due to its remote distance, most people visit Lighthouse Reef for diving and snorkeling day tours, however, similar to Glover’s Reef, travelers can seek out kayaking trips to stay overnight.

3. Turneffe Atoll

Aerial view of Turneffe Flats Resort at Turneffe Atoll, Belize

Just 20 miles off the coast of Central Belize lies Turneffe Atoll, the largest of Belize’s three atolls . Offering pristine cayes, coral gardens and an intricate network of mangrove channels and lagoons, it promises endless exploration opportunities kayakers. And unlike its siblings, accommodations aren’t as rugged there since it’s the most developed atoll in Belize. You can find top high-end fishing and diving resorts that offer free kayak rentals or guided tours to explore the area.

4. Ambergris Caye

Rainbow after rain. The Palapa Bar in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s most popular destination, in particular, its main settlement: San Pedro Town. It is known for luxury resorts , excellent restaurants, and a nightlife scene that is unmatched elsewhere in Belize. The barrier reef is less than a mile away and most tourists venture out on diving and snorkeling tours, however, kayaks are a great way to explore the beautiful crystal-clear waters that surround the island. Kayaking from the shore to the reef and back or within the San Pedro Lagoon are popular options.

5. Caye Caulker

Colinda Cabanas in Caye Caulker, Belize

Just 30 minutes south of Ambergris Caye lies Caye Caulker, a destination known for its hip, laid-back vibe. The nearby reef remains the main draw to the small island, with the added bonus of having more affordable things to do , including cheaper accommodations. Popular kayaking options include exploring the calm waters that surround the island and going to the reef and back. Be careful as to not go past the reef where you can experience strong currents and waves.

6. San Ignacio

Macal River canoeing in San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize

Serving as a hub for eco-tourism in western Belize, San Ignacio is a great base for canoeing adventures. Canoe trips include exploring the Macal and Mopan Rivers, where nature lovers can immerse themselves in a peaceful jungle experience. Additionally, there is cave canoeing at Barton Creek , which allows visitors to travel by canoe into a sacred cave to witness remarkable cave formations, ancient Maya pottery, and human sacrificial remains.

Aerial view of Hopkins

Known for its laid-back vibe and vibrant Garifuna culture , the seaside village of Hopkins in Southern Belize provides a mix of sea kayaking and canoeing experiences. Popular options include sea kayaking off the shore and canoeing the nearby Sittee River, which is slow flowing and teeming with wildlife. However, another option includes venturing to the South Water Caye Marine Reserve , known for its rich biodiversity.

8. Placencia

Beach area in front of Tipsy Tuna Bar in Placencia

Just south of Hopkins lies Placencia, another popular coastal destination in Southern Belize. It is known for beautiful beaches , luxury resorts and amazing diving and snorkeling tours to explore the nearby southern reef and cayes . Kayaks can also be used to explore the reef and cayes but since it’s further out, it is easier to kayak around Placencia or the Placencia Lagoon, which is filled with mangroves and wildlife spotting opportunities.

What do you think of the places mentioned above? And let me know if I missed any of your favourites since I plan to add more places with time.

Soar through the rainforest treetops and kayak through river caves. This fun Belizean jungle combo excursion awaits your adventurous spirit. This Belize shore excursion will be sure to bring out the thrill-seeker in everyone while experiencing the mystery and beauty of Belize.

After taking the tender boat from your ship to the shore, you will meet your English-speaking guide just outside your Belize cruise tender terminal. After checking in, you will be escorted to your exclusive, air-conditioned transportation for the comfortable 60-minute ride into the Belizean jungle. When you arrive at the zipline base camp, you will be outfitted with a harness, helmet, and gloves as well as basic instructions to ensure your safety during the zip line portion. Important note...there is a double cable for added security and backup safety (so you are clipped onto two lines, not just one!). Following a practice run on the novice short zipline, your guide will lead the group up to the next platform where you will get clipped onto the line and gravity will zip you over to the next platform where another guide will receive you. Each person will follow and then you will clip into the next line and repeat the same fun. You sail high above the rainforest and river enjoying 7 different zip lines of up to 1,000 feet in length.

After your bird's eye view over the jungle, it's time to explore jungle river caves from the water at Caves Branch. Before starting your kayaking portion, your expert Belize excursion guide will provide a life vest, helmet, headlamp, and paddle along with a short safety briefing before the 30-minute hike to the riverbed. When you book, you will have the option to book a single kayak for just one person or a double for you and a friend to ride in together. Following the calm river current, your guide will take you through a maze of 4 different caverns where you will enjoy a plethora of stalactite and other unique cavern formations. You may also encounter various tropical birds and other surrounding wildlife such as butterflies, monkeys, and iguanas near the cave entrances. Fairytale-like waterfalls and sparkling caverns make kayaking even better. The paddling is easy and at a relaxed pace.

As you return to base camp, you'll have a delicious lunch of rice and beans with chicken, cole slaw, and fruit juice. After lunch, you will board your comfortable transportation for a relaxing ride back to your Belize cruise ship tender terminal where you can hop on a tender back to your ship or continue to explore the port area in your own leisure time.

Glover’s Reef & Mayan Mountains

8 days / 7 nights.

belize kayaking excursions

“Selected as one of the top adventure trips by Outside Magazine “

Glover’s Reef and Mayan Mountains combines an inland expedition of Mayan ruins and rainforest mountains with the opportunity to explore and stay on a remote coral atoll.

Glover’s Reef is part of the world-famous Belize Barrier Reef, a protected marine park and designated world heritage site thirty-six miles off the shore of mainland Belize.  Perfect for active families and couples of mixed abilities, this adventure basecamp offers flexibility and choices in daily guided activities, so traveling companions can do things together or separately.

Thirty-six miles offshore of the Belize mainland lie a group of tropical islands cradled within a turquoise lagoon and surrounded by a living coral reef. Glover’s Reef Atoll is considered to be one of the richest tropical marine environments in the entire Caribbean. Our private island base of over 13 acres is perched on the southern edge of the atoll with a dramatic view facing east over the main reef crest and the open Caribbean. Based from our comfortable field camp we are fully equipped to spend our days sea kayaking and kayak sailing, snorkeling, diving, and fishing. After our adventures each day, we like to reward ourselves with a bounty of fresh seafood, island baking, tropical fruits, and yes, even rich, decadent desserts! Glover’s is ideal for those who wish to enjoy the comforts of a well-appointed field camp yet want an active and flexible day-to-day schedule.

Trip Highlights

  • Rainforest Adventure, waterfalls & wildlife from the comforts of our boutique jungle lodge located in the heart of a 7000 acre National Park
  • Five perfect days exploring the stunning beauty and extraordinary underwater world of Glover’s Reef Atoll National Marine Reserve
  • Sea kayaking, snorkeling, paddle-boarding, and a full range of activities led by Belize’s finest guides
  • Delicious, fresh caught seafood, tropical fruits and, and local cuisine.
  • Stay at a unique Adventure basecamp on Southwest Caye in the middle of a protected Marine Reserve

“It is a beautiful and still unspoiled country with beautiful unspoiled people. We greatly enjoyed very good food, wonderful Bedizen tour guide stories, the kayaking, and snorkeling, idyllic sailing, deep-sea fishing with huge results we will all swear to and subsequently ate, Hammocks, floating in inner tubes in a cave with headlights on, zoos, horseback riding, Mayan ruins, exquisite tours of wild flora, and fauna. (we were especially fond of the howler monkeys!) A great group of people we felt we had known forever but some of whose last names we still do not know, the secret life of coconuts, having perpetually salty sandy feet, cashew wine, fried jacks, rice, and beans, wild drums, and dancing. All in all, a true adventure to be reviewed, relived, relieved, rejoiced, and remembered.”

Belize Lighthouse Reef Kayak 7 Day

  7 day / 6 night kayak adventure.

belize kayaking excursions

Lighthouse Reef, made famous by legendary underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau, has become known amongst divers as the ‘Aquarium’, renowned for its sheer abundance of marine life, crystal clear waters, and thriving coral reefs.

From the Air, Lighthouse Reef Atoll is a Dazzling island necklace of white sand Cays encircling a sapphire blue lagoon. On the extreme edge of the Belize reef system, miles beyond the main barrier reef, these isolated atolls support the greatest diversity of reef types and marine life.

Formed over millennia, the coral reefs grew on top of the inundated Maya Mountains as sea levels rose (some 10,000 years ago as the last ice age retreated) and eventually formed an oval-shaped wall of corals around a shallow sand and coral lagoon. Stunningly beautiful islands, a sheltered lagoon brimming with life, and the dynamic interaction between the outer reef, open seas, and inner lagoons are the prime attractions of our atoll basecamp on Half Moon Caye.

To get to Lighthouse, we travel by boat beyond the main barrier reef, past Turneffe Atoll – some fifty-five miles east of the mainland where the underwater walls of Lighthouse atoll rise 3000 feet from the surrounding depths of the sea. The inner protected lagoon provides a rare underwater habitat for snorkelers with miles upon miles of shallow, warm waters studded with corals, and where the lagoon drops off to the open sea, precipitous walls, undersea ridges, canyons, tunnels, and valleys brimming with life are the deeper realm of scuba divers.

Long difficult to access and out of reach for kayakers and snorkelers, Island Expeditions has pioneered the first-ever basecamp at Lighthouse Reef where we sleep in spacious walk-in tents, each with an ocean view. You may begin your day with a morning yoga class, and after each day’s activities, our open-air dining pavilion and lounge is the perfect place to relax in comfort with fine meals, splendid company, and conversation charged with the excitement of the day’s adventures.

“The trip looked a perfect fit for us and all the information was well presented and well detailed. Seeing a daily itinerary with pictures let us see what we were going to experience. I had high expectations for a classy, well-planned expedition and I was not disappointed! Awesome Thank you.”

8 day / 8 night adventure.

This is 9 wonderful days on Lighthouse Reef of paddling, sailing, standup Paddleboarding, snorkeling and a visit to the Great Blue Hole. Yoga is also available

Beyond the barrier reef, past Turneffe Atoll–some fifty miles and more eastwards of the Belize mainland– a coral atoll rises from the sea. Shimmering with white-sand cayes and lush green with groves of coconut palms, the lagoon provides a rare underwater habitat for snorkelers, with miles upon miles of shallow waters rich with corals. Where the lagoon drops off to the open sea; precipitous walls, undersea ridges, and valleys brimming with life are the deeper realm of scuba divers. We will also visit the renowned Great Blue Hole with a motor-supported kayak sailing excursion.

Long difficult to access and out of reach for kayakers and snorkelers, we have pioneered the first-ever basecamp at Lighthouse Reef. We sleep in spacious walk-in tents (every window has an ocean view) and after each day’s activities, our open-air dining pavilion is the perfect place to relax in comfort with fine meals and splendid company.

“This is the best adventure trip I have ever had! Thank you for introducing me to a tropical paradise I have only ever dreamt about. I was totally enthralled by the Belize coral reefs – The clarity of the water & the variety of corals & fish was outstanding & revealed new treasures every day. I learnt so much about the country and culture as well as the exquisite natural environment. The guides were superb and ran the whole trip in an unassuming yet efficient manner with a high degree of professionalism. A huge amount of work must go on behind the scenes to achieve such a smooth operation.”

Island Expeditions 35 years of Adventure

These destinations offer kayakers a unique adventure: underground paddling

From Kentucky’s Red River Gorge to Slovenia’s ancient tunnels, journey through hidden caverns and forgotten mines for a kayaking experience like no other.

kayakers in a cave with crystal blue waters

Descending into a chasm on the side of an eastern Kentucky mountain might not sound like an epic start to a kayaking expedition. Yet, here in the heart of the Red River Gorge Geological Area , a 29,000-acre canyon system home to sandstone arches, cliffs, and abandoned mines, it is the best way to experience water without the crowds.

With U.S. kayak sales up nearly 25 percent from pre-pandemic levels as of March 2023, congested lakes and rivers have become the norm. This trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down, with the global kayaking market projected to approach one billion dollars by 2031 .

Yet, for those seeking tranquility on the water, there remain undiscovered havens—hidden beneath the surface.

Exploring the depths below

Our guide, JP Stamper, leads down into a chilly cavern with a life jacket, helmet, and paddle in hand. Flashlights flicker on as we navigate around icy water cascading from the mine’s ceiling, 40 feet above. Venturing deep underground on water might seem daunting to some, but there’s an overwhelming sense of calm that accompanies floating over still water, in surreal silence.

For 90 minutes, we paddle through winding chambers and expansive caverns, our clear-bottom kayaks revealing huge boulders and rainbow trout below. Overhead, tiny Kentucky brown bats are nestled deep in their winter hibernation. Here and there, wires and pipes—remnants of a once-thriving mining industry—appear eerily preserved beneath the water’s surface.

At no point during the SUP Kentucky kayaking tour did it feel claustrophobic. In the parts of the tour with the deepest water, paddlers rise within about six feet of the overhead rock. The absence of any current and the presence of our two guides on stand-up paddleboards monitoring our group also helps.

Subterranean kayaking might not be at the top of the list for most paddlers, but for Don Marsan, who runs kayaking tours from the massive, 150-acre underground lake at Crystal City Cave in Missouri, there’s nothing like it. “We’ve had thousands of people from all over the world come here to try this out. We do about 20,000 people a year,” he says.

SUP Kentucky saw a 26 percent increase in visitors between 2021 and 2023. Last year, it started offering unguided kayaks and paddle board tours to meet the demand from more adventurous paddlers.

“We take them in, show them around, and then leave them be for two hours,” says Stamper. “But people can’t get lost—there’s a light trail that leads all the way back to the entrance.”

( These trails aren’t for hikers, they’re for kayakers .)

The company also offers the choice between   a clear-bottom kayak   or a paddleboard with multicolored LED lights illuminating the water underneath.

At the Blue Springs Cavern Park in Bedford, Indiana , kayakers can navigate America’s longest navigable underground river with a local tour company that offers three-hour kayaking and boat trips 100 feet below the surface.

Where to try underground kayaking

Subterranean kayaking isn’t limited to the U.S. In Korea’s Dongyang (also known as Chungju) Jade Cave , visitors can paddle in the cool, damp underworld. In Belize ’s Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archeological Reserve , tour operators offer kayaking and tubing through caves where ancient Mayan culture is depicted on cave walls.

A 450-year-old former metal mine in northern Slovenia has become a hotspot for underground kayaking.

“We had 2,100 people in 2021, last year we had 3,371, despite being closed for three weeks due to flooding in August,” says Darja Komar, the manager of Podzemlje Pece , a tour operator at the mine.

Visitors take a short train ride down the mine before walking 328 feet through hip-high water to reach the kayaks. From there, paddlers spend 45 minutes on tandem kayaks, navigating through 1.7 miles of tunnels and open spaces. The guided tours are in English, German, and Slovenian, with each tour limited to 10 participants.

( See the ocean’s glow-in-the-dark world on a fluorescent night dive .)

“It’s not just a tour,” says Komar, “it’s an experience where you learn about the history of mining and this region.”

For some, exploring subterranean water worlds from a kayak is adventurous enough, while others have taken it to another level.

The Rio Chontalcoatlán in Mexico ’s Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park offers one of the most challenging whitewater kayaking adventures. Expert kayakers navigate nearly two miles of underground rapids and narrow passages, guided only by tiny lights on their helmets—a venture best suited for the most skilled whitewater paddlers.
