What happens if I get COVID-19 in Thailand?

If you test positive for COVID-19 and have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic, Thai authorities recommend that you self-isolate for seven days. After that period, those who no longer have symptoms can go out provided they take extra precautions to ensure they do not infect others.

If you have health insurance and need medical treatment for more severe symptoms, you can receive medical treatment at a hospital and get reimbursed according to your policy.

What happens if I need medical treatment while traveling in Thailand?

Those who have purchased travel insurance in Thailand can receive medical treatment at both in-network or out-of-network hospitals. Normally for in-network hospitals, you can present the insurance policy to the hospital and there will be no advance payment required. For out-of-network hospitals, you may need to pay out of pocket first and submit a claim later. Please check your policy to find the list of in-network hospitals.

What is the claim process?

You can submit a claim form to your insurance provider through the contact channels listed in the policy, which can be mail, email, or fax. You will also need to submit documents according to the matter of claims. For example, a medical claim will require a physician’s report stating the symptoms, diagnosis and the treatment given and the original receipt of the medical bills. 

Typically, the insurance provider will pay for the reimbursement within 15 days after the receipt of completed claim form and required documents.

What if my visa application is rejected? Can I request a refund?

Normally in such cases, the travel insurance policy will be canceled with a full refund.

What is not covered by travel insurance?

There may be some exclusions in the travel insurance policy you purchase. So, it is highly recommended that you read your policy thoroughly. For example, a travel insurance policy could have medical coverage but exclude pre-existing conditions. Also, high-risk activities such as mountain climbing may not be covered and you may not be covered if you are under the influence of alcohol or addictive substances.

What is Thailand Pass?

Thailand Pass is an online registration system for foreign travelers to fill in their travel and health information such as flight details, hotel accommodation, vaccination status and insurance before arriving in Thailand. However, from 1 July 2022, Thailand Pass is no longer a requirement for entering the country.

While Thailand Pass and medical insurance covering COVID-19 is no longer required. It is still recommended for all travelers coming to Thailand to purchase travel insurance since testing positive for COVID-19 is still a possibility and it is better to be insured if something like that were to happen.

Is a Thailand Pass still required to enter Thailand?

From 1 July 2022, travelers visiting Thailand do not need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering the country and only need a valid passport and a certificate of COVID-19 vaccination. Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travelers who have proof of a negative result from an RT-PCR test or professional ATK within 72 hours of travel will also be allowed entry.

Although Thailand has shifted into post-pandemic mode, thousands of people are still catching COVID-19 each day. So, it is still recommended for all travelers coming to Thailand to purchase travel insurance to prepare for unexpected circumstances.

What is the recommended medical insurance for Thailand Pass registration?

MSIG Asia’s CEO shares approach to risk management evolution

CEO Clemens Philippi explains why MSIG Asia is sticking with a Japanese-based strategy of thinking long-term and prioritising sustainability.

Insurers are facing mounting pressure to enhance offerings amidst rising expectations and socio-economic shifts, coupled with a growing affluent population. Jurisdictional requirements vary for foreign insurance firms establishing branches, with some regions allowing only locally incorporated entities.

For MSIG Asia Chief Executive Officer Clemens Philippi , regulatory changes are both challenges and opportunities, so meeting them head-on with a proactive stance is the answer.

Speaking to I nsurance Asia , Philippi shed the company’s strategic initiatives aimed at bolstering growth and adapting to market shifts, explaining why regulatory approval may be needed for changes in foreign direct investment and control regimes, including shareholders and management.

He also outlined plans for organic and inorganic growth, particularly in developing bite-sized insurance products and exploring potential mergers. Looking at projections of high single-digit growth, the MSIG Asia top boss said there are still hints at the potential for significant jumps with emerging opportunities.

His insights offer a glimpse into MSIG Asia’s dynamic approach to navigating evolving landscapes whilst staying true to its long-term vision of sustainability and societal impact. With a blend of innovation, strategic partnerships, and a strong focus on purpose, MSIG Asia charts a course for continued growth and resilience in the face of uncertainty.

Here are excerpts from his interview with Insurance Asia .

What new strategies is your company implementing in 2024 to stay competitive and address changing customer needs? How does this differ from previous approaches?

Despite regulatory changes posing challenges to the industry, MSIG Asia is approaching this as an opportunity. The increased minimum capital requirements and other pressures in the markets, from regulators or continued high-interest environment compared to years before or high inflation environment lead to consolidation. It’s a challenge for most of the players, but we see these as an opportunity for growth in terms of organic and inorganic.

MSIG Asia hopes, on the inorganic side, to continue with product development. So, in the last few years, we've invested in new products — bite-sized products — to be easily distributable for platform partners to have micro-insurance offerings. Also, for the small and medium enterprises (SME) and micro-SME parts in cyberspace, we offer many more products. On the organic side, consolidation trends might be triggered through the regulation that’s coming in through reinsurance pressures and we’ve set up a team here to closely study what can happen on the inorganic growth side. And if an opportunity arises, we want to play a role there.

How will these initiatives drive MSIG Asia’s growth for the year?

We are a Japanese company. And the beauty of a Japanese company is that it is sustainability and long-term growth-focused. We never face that pressure to have high double digits. I believe we are in the high single-digit growth aspiration or per business plan. But of course, we have written and proposed to the head office a 10-year growth plan, which has a different aspiration impact… With all the opportunities we have, if something arises then it can certainly go in high double-digit numbers.

How does MSIG Asia handle risk management and mitigation, particularly with emerging risks, and how has this changed over time?

There will be no major change in MSIG Asia’s strategy on this from previous years. In the two to three years I’ve been head of the region, we have gone back to our Japanese-based strategy — to think long-term and put sustainability first. On that basis, risk management is very important for us.

We have invested a lot in these resources, predating my time already. So when I came here, I found happily that we have a very strong risk management team in all the countries but also at the regional level. The team focused on the traditional approach to risk management. Thus, defining the risk appetite, looking at the capital management, making sure that we, of course, are solvent at all times; at all stress scenarios; doing the risk mapping every quarter; risk identification; and then re-somatic mitigation with all the countries.

This is something done locally and then escalated to a regional risk committee. We then discuss and give feedback to the countries and then try to bring up changes there. The strength of that team has helped me then in the last two to three years to say we can go beyond our defensive role and become much more offensive.

On the more traditional product side, we are a big player in all the markets for motor insurance, and the risk management team, including the actuarial team, is very much involved in steering that portfolio.

On top of that risk bubble is the topic of generative artificial intelligence or AI. What is the risk of ignoring it? Not being on the forefront?

Of course, we have a global digital hub here in Singapore, which is helping all our countries to get to grips with generative AI and how we can use it and bring it to bear for the benefit of all the countries. But really, the important question asked: ‘What’s the risk of not speedily adopting it?’ But at the same time, ‘What is the risk of wrongly adopting it?’ ‘What are the measures and consequences of that?’ Hence, this is a new paper that we discussed heavily over the last two quarters in the risk committee and it’s quite interesting to follow.

Can you discuss any notable partnerships or collaborations your company is entering this year? How do you see these alliances contributing to the overall success of your business?

It’s a continuation of what we’ve done over the last years, and we’ve increased partnerships and ecosystem partnerships in particular, heavily, and that goes for all areas.

For instance, we’ve been across Southeast Asia in three key markets: Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. There have been very successful consumer finance providers or non-banking companies, which are focused on serving the middle class — a segment the banking industry partly ignored in the past couple of years.

With this, we’ve created bite-size insurance. Whenever a customer policyholder goes to a shop and buys something, they take up a loan. We noticed micro insurances have taken off over the last few years, and we’re looking forward to continuing this.

An example is in Indonesia, where we work with the e-commerce platform to also provide bite-size insurance there. In the travel industry, we’ve captured Thailand, the No. 1 position in the market for travel insurance. Other travel insurance opportunities were seen in many other markets like Australia and Singapore. We are heavily growing in travel insurance brought upon by the post-pandemic era.

What is also interesting is the cyber side. We see a lot of growth in our region. Whatever numbers you pull up, expansion is seen in this industry, and we want to participate in that as well. We already put up an experienced team, yet we see potential partnerships with fintechs for risk management and distribution. A notable partnership we revived last year was in bancassurance, specifically with HSBC Singapore where MSIG Insurance inked a 15-year bancassurance pact with multinational bank, HSBC, enabling the distribution of MSIG’s commercial and personal insurance solutions to HSBC’s Singaporean clientele.

But one topic, of course, that MSIG Asia wants to support is the battle against climate change. We are actively partnering with NGOs, communities, and start-ups to support and create tools, which will help our policyholders to understand their emissions and guide them to reduce emissions over time.

As an insurance company, the areas where we contribute largely are on the investment side: and we’ve made big progress there to steer our investments to low-carbon areas. And then on the underwriting side: to understand how much emissions are coming from our policyholders.

Lastly, can you share with us your experience as an insurance leader?

I think it’s the best time to be a CEO in an insurance company. Recently, we just kicked off a Thailand team. We went across the region to conduct town halls. But my message was always clear: insurance is among all the financial instruments; the most purposeful product.

Why? Because we create a community. We create a pool of policyholders who all support each other. I think it’s very good for us as insurance practitioners to go out and talk to our people about the purpose of insurance — the history of it.

Of course, with the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) environment that we described the industry overall has a very important role to play. I enjoy every day as a CEO of MSIG Asia and working with my people to contribute to making societies more stable and balanced.
