Buenos Aires

Enchanting while youthful, historic yet spirited.

Buenos Aires is a vibrant blend of traditional ‘asado’ (steakhouses) and tango bars, colorful Fileteado artwork and grand Belle Époque mansions. Whether you’re seeking a luxury family vacation or a private tour, we’ll show you the city’s secrets. Between learning to make tasty empanadas with a hands-on cooking class and sampling varieties of helado, Argentina’s take on ice-cream, you’ll discover the passion and history of the Tango during a private lesson, tour through the city’s urban street art scene, or soak in the atmosphere as you watch a match in La Boca neighborhood – the home of Argentinian football.

Celebrating the finest glass of red we all know and love.

Where better to experience the culinary excellence of Argentina than in the home of Malbec – Mendoza. Experience an abundance of wine tastings and local delicacies with skilled sommeliers. During harvest season, test your hand at grape picking and learn the art of winemaking before we set up a private dining experience among the vines. Beyond the cellar door, is the world-class wine resort Casa de Uco. Famous for its picturesque valley setting, and laden with stretches of vineyards, the Andes is its epic backdrop.

Northern or southern Patagonia? Why not visit both.

The landscapes shift dramatically as you journey down the Andes from Bariloche to El Calafate and onto Ushuaia, at the southern tip of the continent. Our Argentina experts have tried and tested unique hiking routes, located epic glacier views and identified remote lakes for you to experience in a way that very few get to. Try your hand at fly fishing, take in the azure ice formations of Perito Moreno Glacier , and marvel at the incredible Mt. Fitz Roy; topping off one almighty bucket list adventure.

A Natural Beauty Waiting to be Discovered

argentina luxury travel

Luxury travel to Argentina promises to tantalize every dimension of your senses. Indeed, the charms of Mendoza and the majesty of Patagonia can only be captured through private luxury travel to Argentina with Ker & Downey.

Natural Wonders

From the power of Iguazu Falls in the north, to the “end of the world” in Ushuaia in the south… Argentina’s natural splendor enchants the heart. The diversity of Patagonia alone is a highlight on any Argentina private tour. Take, for example, the Kingdom of Ice found in El Calafate. The mighty Perito Moreno glacier proves a powerful complement to such outdoor playgrounds as lake-ridden Bariloche and the climber paradise of El Chaltén. Then there is Ushuaia: the launching point for cruises through Tierra del Fuego and, of course, Antarctica . And do not forget such dynamo destinations as Iguazu Falls, the largest waterfall system in the world, as well as the Iberá Wetlands nearby. This protected reserve in northeast Argentina is home to an abundance of wildlife.

Luxury travel to Argentina would feel incomplete without a stop in the wine lands of Mendoza. This Malbec mecca does not just offer access to some of the finest wine producers in the world; it also allows you to taste the award-winning gastronomy of such masterminds as Francis Mallmann. The wine identity of Argentina does not stop in Mendoza, however. It also extends to the north in the Cafayate wine region where Torrontes reigns supreme.

City Sights

Looking for a bit of city spice? Then explore the vibrant and beautiful city of Buenos Aires, affectionately known as the “Paris of South America.” Luxury travel to Argentina will allow you to experience the richest parts of the culture. While here, take a tango lesson and visit a local milonga in Buenos Aires. Dine on a delicious dinner of empanadas and malbec. Stay at some of the most luxurious hotels on the continent. Alternatively, spend a day with the cowboys of South America, the gauchos, in an estancia just outside the city. Or simply indulge yourself in a “chocolate massage.” Indeed, Buenos Aires is a city of European-flavored sophistication sparked with Latin passion.

Argentina Private Tours with Ker & Downey

Luxury travel to Argentina promises unabashed luxury, vibrant cultures, award-winning wines, and magnificent natural splendors. To be sure, Argentina is a natural beauty  waiting to be discovered.

Talk to your Ker & Downey travel expert to create your own Argentina private tour. Argentina is an incredible add-on from any of Ker & Downey’s South American destinations. ARGENTINA LUXURY TOURS

Luxury travel argentina.

While Argentina is best known for its Malbec wines, high-quality steaks, and the passionate tango, there are many other reasons to visit this regionally diverse country. In fact, one might feel as though they have traveled to several different countries after a luxury journey through Argentina. Begin your luxury tour in the uniquely European capital of Buenos Aires, where the heavy Italian and Spanish influence can be felt in everything from the cuisine to the distinct vocabulary and lively hand gestures of the animated porteños. Traveling to the northwestern provinces of Salta and Jujuy, one will encounter the imposing Andes mountains, a much drier but striking climate, and a mix of indigenous and Spanish colonial culture. Continuing south along the Andes, Mendoza and its Malbec producing vineyards are not to be missed. North of Buenos Aires, at the border with Brazil, lies the wildly different sub-Atlantic rainforest and the majestic Iguazu Falls. Southwest of Buenos Aires, in northern Patagonia, or the Lake District, the tranquil alpine scenery and architecture will have visitors feeling as though they may have actually traveled to central Europe. Even further south in Patagonia, one comes to the spectacular Land of the Giants with glaciers, rugged mountains, and the departure point for Antarctica.

ARGENTINA'S HIGHLIGHTS

Buenos aires.

Famously referred to as the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires is strikingly different from most other South American cities. Strolling through the elegant neighborhoods of Recoleta and Retiro with their Parisian-style former palaces, it’s obvious the nickname is fitting. In trendy Palermo, enjoy a visit to MALBA to see Latin American works of art, shop at chic local boutiques, bike through the neighborhood’s beautiful parks and charming streets. In the center of bustling Buenos Aires, tour the stately Teatro Colon, one of the best opera houses in the world, from behind the scenes with private, VIP access. On Sundays, visitors can’t miss the markets on the cobblestone streets of San Telmo, the oldest neighborhood in the city. Not far from San Telmo, one can find the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace, and the historic Plaza de Mayo. In the evenings, dine on famed Argentine steak and wine before taking in an iconic tango show.

Northern Patagonia (Lake District)

The stunning alpine Lake District in Northern Patagonia is a true playground for the outdoor enthusiast! Active travelers can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, or even white water rafting among the snowcapped Andes mountains and crystalline alpine lakes. Explore the largest lake in the area, Lago Nahuel Huapi, on your own private yacht and personal captain who will take you to Victoria Island, where you can take in the local flora and fauna and savor a gourmet picnic lunch. After playing hard in the area’s natural beauty, travelers can relax and take in the striking lake views at their luxury lodge or choose to be pampered to their heart’s content with a variety of spa treatments. In the evening, enjoy local culinary specialties influenced by central and eastern European immigrants who populated this area that is sometimes called “Little Switzerland.”

Southern Patagonia

In Southern Patagonia, the Land of the Giants, the terrain shifts into rougher landscapes featuring piercing blue glaciers, emerald lakes, and towering snow-covered mountain peaks near the continent’s end. For an unforgettable experience in El Calafate, head to Glacier National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here travelers can see the park’s many glaciers up close and even trek across the ice of the majestic Perito Moreno glacier with an expert guide. In El Chaltén, travelers up for a challenge have the opportunity to hike Mount Fitz Roy. After completing this 12-mile trek, hikers are rewarded with dramatic views of glaciers, the unforgettable towers of Cerro Torre, and the turquoise waters of Lago de los Tres. Continue to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, where one can hike through Tierra del Fuego National Park or navigate the famed Beagle Channel by boat.

Iguazu Falls

Upon seeing the spectacular Iguazu Falls, it is said former first lady Elenor Roosevelt exclaimed, “Poor Niagara!” An understandable reaction considering that Iguazu Falls is almost three times as wide and about 100 feet taller! Feel the power of these monumental falls from the water on a private boat tour or enjoy a birds-eye view of the tumbling waters via a private helicopter flyover as part of this luxury tour. Because of its location within the sub-Atlantic rainforest, this UNESCO World Heritage site also offers the opportunity to enjoy colorful rainforest flora and fauna, including howler monkeys, toucans, caiman, mischievous coatis, and possibly even the elusive jaguar. Interestingly, the name of these mighty falls is not a Spanish name. It comes from the language of the local indigenous population, the Guaraní, and many locals who live in the area still have Guaraní heritage today.

With the dramatic Andes mountains as an incredible backdrop, visitors to Mendoza, the heart of Argentina’s wine country, have the opportunity to visit some of the best vineyards in South America and the world. Although best known for Malbec, the vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley produce grapes of different varieties as well, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and more. Blue Parallel can arrange private culinary experiences and wine tastings with a sommelier at both iconic and smaller boutique vineyards as part of a luxury tour in Mendoza. The natural beauty of the wine region is also the perfect setting for outdoor adventures like mountain biking or horseback riding.

Travelers will find spectacular natural landscapes in the northwestern provinces of Salta and Jujuy. From the small but proud colonial city of Salta, this luxury tour will take travelers to the hidden gem of Cafayate, a tiny town famous for its exceptionally high-altitude vineyards. On the way, pass fascinating, lunar-like sandstone rock formations before arriving at the boutique vineyards to sample excellent wines, including the local signature white, Torrontés. In Jujuy, observe the surviving remnants of Argentina's indigenous cultures and the area's unusual geography. Stay in the quaint village of Purmamarca at the foot of the majestic Mountain of Seven Colors, part of UNESCO World Heritage site Quebrada de Humahuaca. From there, journey to the perspective-shifting Salina Grandes and pre-Incan fortification Pucará outside the mountain town of Tilcara.

Argentina's Los Glaciares (or Glaciers) National Park in Patagonia is near the trekking meccas of El Calafate and El Chalten. The area offers exceptional opportunities to get up close to towering glaciers like Perito Moreno , which is still advancing and can be enjoyed on an ice hike or from the water. Outside of Patagonia, Argentina brings to mind the Andean peaks of Aconcagua and surrounding mountains – the highest outside the Himalayas – and the wildlife of the Valdes Peninsula. If you need another reason to visit, consider Mendoza for world-class red wine and the Argentinian Lakes District near Bariloche for scenic lakeside wilderness lodges. Antarctica cruises depart from Buenos Aires and Ushuaia on Argentina's southernmost tip.

Journey Through Argentina

( 15 Days - Departs Daily on a Private Basis) Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, Mendoza, El Calafate, Bariloche

This comprehensive private tour is the ultimate luxury tour of Argentina.

Begin in vibrant Buenos Aires . With your own private guide and driver, visit the city’s most evocative neighborhoods such as San Telmo, La Boca, Palermo and Puerto Madero, and see highlights around the city such as the Plaza de Mayo, Casa Rosada and Recoleta Cemetery. Visit local museums according to your interests, such as the Evita Museum or MALBA, a museum of Latin American art. One evening, attend a top-rated tango performance at an intimate, upscale dinner theater. If desired, take a private excursion to San Antonio de Areco and an estancia in the pampas to learn about gaucho culture and experience the traditional estancia lifestyle. Alternatively, take a private excursion to Tigre and the Parana River Delta to enjoy a relaxing private cruise on the canals of this “rural Venice,” passing gardens and upscale vacation houses. Also enjoy time to take advantage of the exciting contemporary art and design scene, world-class restaurants and great shopping. All touring is flexible and can be customized to incorporate special interests such as art, tango, polo, Jewish history, family activities, adventure, gastronomy and more.

Continue to  Iguazu Falls , one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the world. Stay in a private villa at Awasi, an exclusive luxury lodge in the rainforest on the Argentine side of the falls. With your private guide, venture onto catwalks to see the most breathtaking sections of the waterfall, such as the thundering Garganta del Diablo ("Devil's Throat"). Also venture to the Brazilian side for a private boat excursion to the base of the falls. Depending on timing and interests, relax in your private plunge pool at Awasi or enjoy additional lodge-based activities such as kayaking on the river, hiking and birding in the rainforest, seeing the UNESCO-listed ruins of Jesuit missions or visiting a local indigenous community. Alternatively, stay at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, a grand historic hotel surrounded by jungle and wildlife that's a short walk from the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls. Upon request, we can also arrange scenic helicopter flights over Iguazu Falls.

Continue to Mendoza , one of the world’s most notable wine regions. During private touring, visit the most interesting and upscale local wineries, and sample Malbec, Torrontes and other locally produced wines. Mendoza also has some of the best restaurants in Argentina, and there will be opportunities to dine at acclaimed restaurants on the grounds of vineyard estates.

Then, fly to El Calafate to experience southern Patagonia’s vast open steppe and the impressive peaks, glaciers and pale blue lakes of Los Glaciares National Park. One day, visit magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier—one of the few advancing glaciers in the world—to see (and hear!) icebergs calving from it, and perhaps enjoy a shared cruise or opt to take a guided trek on top of the glacier itself. If desired, also enjoy exciting lodge-based activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching and horseback riding.

Continue to Bariloche , a resort town in the beautiful Lake District of northern Patagonia. Stay in the legendary Llao Llao Hotel, and enjoy spectacular views of the mountains and lakes in the surrounding national park. With your guide, enjoy a private cruise on the deep blue waters of Lake Nahuel Huapi, learn about the indigenous history of the area, and dine on a gourmet meal of local food and wine on a private, secluded beach. During leisure time, enjoy scenic walks, soak in the sun on the private beach, kayak on a quiet lake, or simply relax at Llao Llao and enjoy the hotel’s wonderful facilities and expansive views.

The tour concludes with one night in Buenos Aires.

On top of this, with a span ranging from the tropics in the north to the Antarctic in the south, it has a spectrum and diversity of wildlife and natural beauty that is unsurpassed anywhere else and it is for these reason that Argentina travel and Argentina honeymoons have become so popular over recent years.

Growing up in this vast, natural playground has left its mark on the Argentines, who are friendly, inviting and very active! (they also travel extensively themselves) It is no wonder that Argentina travel ranks amongst the best in the world for fly fishing, horse riding, skiing, wildlife viewing any plenty more.

Argentina Luxury Travel | Argentina Holidays | Plan South America

Our experience in shaping luxury and adventure holidays in Argentina is unmatched.

From the elegant cobblestone boulevards, tango halls, century-old cafes and designer boutiques of Buenos Aires, Argentina unfolds through thousands of miles of flat pampas into the rolling sierras of Cordoba and the vineyards of Mendoza, before soaring into the Andes – the country’s impressively rugged border with Chile.

To the north, soaring peaks, cactus forests and lunar landscapes give way to subtropical jungle, wetlands and Iguazú, some of the world’s most stunning waterfalls.

To the south, Patagonia embraces snow-capped peaks, crystalline lakes and immense glaciers. Adventure here abounds – imagine diving with penguins, heli-skiing immaculate powder, fly fishing brown trout, or finishing a day of white water rafting sleeping in a treehouse, resting under the skies of one of the last great wildernesses.

Select a Sense

Argentine cuisine is profoundly influenced by European flavours, notably from Italy and Spain. It is famed for its high-quality beef, with the asado (barbecue) central to local culture. Empanadas , choripán (a grilled sausage sandwich), and dulce de leche are also ubiquitous, as well as Italian-inspired pizza and pasta. The Buenos Aires scene is sophisticated, with good spots for sushi and ceviche, and a handful of good Asian and Middle Eastern favourites. Ask us about the best puertas cerradas, for word of mouth pop-ups, often with innovative menus served in private houses and apartments.

Argentine music and dance are richly diverse, dominated by the passionate tango, born in Buenos Aires’ working-class neighbourhoods. Folk music like zamba and chacarera from the Andean northwest, and the milonga, tango’s precursor, are also significant. These more traditional sounds are complemented by much-loved rock nacional and a thriving electronic scene. The Buenos Aires nightlife is legendary.

Textiles, leather goods, a mate and bombilla , dulce de leche and alfajores , silverware, gaucho knives & wine. Some of our favourite Argentine wares can be found at Facon and Siesta Argentina .

Luxury Travel to Argentina: An Insider Guide

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Published on: December 10th, 2018

Last modified: July 28th, 2023

Argentina is a varied country, and there is so much to discover.

One of Latin America’s largest countries, Argentina is home to thundering waterfalls, gigantic glaciers and impressive open plains.

From what to do to where to stay, we’ve put together this insider guide to Argentina to help you get closer to the locals and discover all that this fascinating country has to offer.

argentina-quebrada-de-las-conchas

Why travel to Argentina?

Adventurer’s paradise.

Argentina is a haven for adventure travellers. From ice climbing in Los Glaciares National Park to reaching the ends of the Earth in Ushuaia, there are all sorts of activities to get your heart racing. Argentina’s Patagonia is undoubtedly the best place in the country for adventure travel. Located in an area near the Andes on the border with Chile, the incredible  glacial landscape of El Calafate and Los Glaciares is made up of stunning mountains, lakes and glaciers.

El Calafate, Argentina

An intrepid way to explore this breathtaking region is by getting up close to the still-advancing Perito Moreno glacier. At 30 kilometres long, 5 kilometres wide and up to 60 metres high in parts, this impressive glacier can move up to 2 metres a day. Watching chunks of ice split and crash into turquoise waters is an awe-inspiring phenomenon. Travellers can explore the glacier on walkways that allow you to see the glacier from different angles, or take a boat trip around the base.

people-trekking-perito-moreno-glacier

In nearby El Chalten , Argentina’s best climbing and trekking can be found. Once a remote outpost, El Chalten is a small village of just 500 people, nestled beneath the FitzRoy and Cerro Torre mountains. With jagged peaks piercing the skyline and an array of cliff faces, even the most accomplished of climbers can be challenged here. While the steepness of some faces cater to more advanced climbers, there are many easier treks and climbing expeditions for less experienced travellers.

el-chalten-cerro-torres-argentina

Moving further down the country, frontier city  Ushuaia is on the map as the last centre of civilisation before the Antarctic. The presence of the Beagle channel here means travellers can journey along dramatic coastline and explore wildlife in the surrounding waters. For a different vantage point over the dramatic landscape, travellers can ride in a helicopter across the region. Adventurous globetrotters can also spend their time here hiking in the beautiful Lapataia National Park, or skiing during the winter months .

Beautiful coastline

For wildlife lovers, Argentina’s rugged Patagonian coast can’t be beaten. The stunning Peninsula Valdes is home to a wealth of marine life. Here, travellers can spot Southern right whales, sea lions, orcas, magellan penguins and elephant seals amongst others. With majestically barren beaches and crystal clear waters, Peninsula Valdes has some of the most stunning scenery in the country. If that’s not enough, there are also three giant salt lakes in the middle of this peninsula. In this wonderfully isolated part of the world, travellers can go whale watching, visit penguin colonies or dive in deep blue seas. Other activities on offer here include horse riding, salmon fishing, birdwatching and cycling.

whale-watching-peninsula-valdes-argentina

More daring travellers can get off the beaten track in Bahia Bustamante , just south of Peninsula Valdes. Founded many years ago by a small estancia (ranch) to harvest seaweed in the area, this small town has only recently become a tourist destination. The clear air here is suited to various wildlife, particularly birds. The greatest diversity of seabirds in Patagonia can be found here; with 21 breeding colonies, standout species include Steamer Ducks, Magellan Penguins and Chilean Flamingos. Marine life is also abundant here, with sealions, orcas and dolphins often spotted. Dotted with small islets and white sandy beaches, this Argentinian coastline is a delightful place to explore.

Culture and food

Beyond its rugged coastline and dramatic countryside, Argentina’s cities offer a world of food and culture to discover. As well as an abundance of classical architecture and tree-lined boulevards, capital Buenos Aires is the beating heart of Argentina’s food scene. True foodies can spend their time in the Argentinian capital learning how the city’s culinary heritage has transformed into ‘La Nueva Cocina Argentina’ of today. For lunch or dinner, foodies can then visit one of the many traditional Buenos Aires Parillas (steak restaurants) in the vibrant La Boca district.

For a taste of local culture, visitors to Argentina can learn about the ancient art of tango. In Buenos Aires, meeting the country’s finest tango experts is a great way to learn about the mesmerising dance before getting involved in it yourself. Travellers can take a private tango lesson with a professional, or let loose in local late-night dance hall Milonga, where amazing live bands and dancers drift their way into the night. If you’d rather watch the action from afar, enjoying a Rojo tango show at the capital’s Faena Hotel is a fantastic way to do so.

Where to go in Argentina

Buenos aires.

One of the world’s greatest cities, Buenos Aires is a must-visit on any trip to Argentina. This eclectic city has heaps of tradition, as well as a resurgence of modernity amongst its streets. There is a great variety of things to do in this city, from dancing in tango saloons to sipping sundowners in stylish new bars, restaurants and nightclubs. While exploring this diverse city, travellers can tour the elegant belle-epoque Mansions of Racleta, catch a tango show or impromptu street performance or explore the stylish boutiques of Palermo. To visit Buenos Aires without the crowds, the best time to go is from April to June (autumn) or September to December (spring). January and February are also good times to visit in terms of temperature but this is the peak tourist season.

One of the most picturesque wine regions across the globe, Mendoza is prime vine growing territory. With almost constant sunshine and water supplied by the run-off from the Andes, the varieties of wine grown here are some of the best the world has to offer. As well as enjoying the good life and sampling the excellent wine grown here, travellers can raft in the foothills, explore the area on foot or on horseback or dine in one of the many world-class restaurants here. For the best wine harvests, visit Mendoza between March and April.

Iguazu Falls

Sitting on the border between Argentina and Brazil, the Iguazu Falls are one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights. The majority of the 275 cascades sit on the Argentinian side, where a well-planned system of trails and walkways allows visitors to experience every angle of the falls. One of the most astonishing parts of the Falls is the Garganta del Diablo, or ‘Devil’s Throat.’ Here, several hugely powerful falls join,  and water crashes against rocks. As they are situated within Argentina’s Misiones province, the area surrounding the falls makes up a significant part of the Atlantic Forest. One of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world, this area is home to thousands of plant species, hundreds of bird species, and animals such as howler monkeys, ocelots and tapirs.

iguazu-falls-argentina

Argentina’s Patagonia has a lot to offer, with notable regions including El Calafate, El Chalten and Ushuaia. To experience the Argentinian tradition of a ranch stay, though, your best bet is to visit the Patagonian region of Las Pampas . The legendary plains here are known as gaucho territory, and it’s easy to see why with the area’s wide open spaces, fresh air and relaxed pace of life. Best enjoyed between October and April, the Argentinean Pampas offer plenty of opportunity to horse ride beside gauchos or enjoy an afternoon asado (BBQ).

las-pampas-argentina

Argentina’s Lake District

With snow-capped peaks, verdant hills and crystalline water bodies, Argentina’s Lake District   has a distinctly alpine feel to it. The perfect place to enjoy the outdoors, there are so many  outdoor activities on offer here. Travellers can explore the area by hiking, mountain biking, fishing, golfing, horse riding, kayaking, mountaineering, rafting or skiing. This lakeside paradise is also just a stone’s throw from Bariloche, home to the best chocolate in the country.

Where to stay in Argentina

Boutique hotels in buenos aires.

Argentina’s capital is a wonderful blend of stylish neighbourhoods and traditional communities. In some of the city’s most up and coming districts, luxurious boutique hotels abound. In the waterside neighbourhood of Puerto Madero, the striking Philippe Starck Faena Hotel is located in the the restored El Porteño building. This once war time factory has been elegantly transformed into an up to date property, with rooms and suites overlooking the buzzing quaysides of Puerto Madero. This stunning hotel boasts fine dining, traditional Argentinian cuisine and even the opportunity to watch the renowned Rojo Tango show.

faena-pool-buenos-aires-argentina

A more picturesque lodging, Legado Mitico in the hip Palermo district caters to creatives and lovers of tradition. The eleven rooms here are each inspired by a famous Argentinian figure, including tango dancer Carlos Gardel, writer Jorge Luis Borges, and Evita Peron. Inquisitive travellers can read about the historic figures in the communal library, before relaxing with a drink on the patio.

Traditional estancias

Estancias, or working cattle ranches, are great places to stay for travellers who want to immerse themselves in the Argentine way of life. With beautiful landscapes up and down the country, there are plenty of estancias to pick from. Unsurprisingly, some of the best can be found in picturesque Patagonia, particularly in the Las Pampas and El Calafate regions.

estancia-colome-view

In Las Pampas, boutique Estancia La Bamba is authentic, intimate and refined. This flawless property is great for travellers who want to experience the rugged romance of the gaucho in a stylish and well-run setting. There are eleven rooms here, which all seamlessly blend the rural environment with contemporary style. The ranch’s shaded patios are the perfect place to relax or watch the ponies, while more active travellers can enjoy a range of equestrian excursions.

estancia-la-bamba-argentina

World-class Eolo in El Calafate is an estancia in a league of its own. Sitting on a 10,000 acre piece of land between the town of El Calafate and the majestic Perito Moreno glacier, this property is perfect for nature lovers. Inspired by the historic estancias of the area, simplicity is key here. However, simplicity doesn’t mean compromising on luxury – food here is produced using delicious local produce, making for a dynamic and exciting menu that can be enjoyed alongside sweeping views.

Wine lodges in Mendoza

With one of the finest wine growing regions in the world, it’s not surprising that Argentina is also home to many great wine lodges. The recently opened Vines Resort & Spa is a delightful blend of elegant and contemporary. The hotel has been built with the surrounding environment in mind and merges perfectly into the uniform horizon of the Uco Valley’s vineyards. Each bedroom here comes with its own modern kitchen, sitting area and private patio.

Set in the heart of the wine country, Cavas Wine Lodge is one of the most romantic properties in Mendoza. Each room here comes with its own private plunge pool and uninterrupted views out over the vineyard and the Andes. Other luxurious amenities on offer include an excellent spa facility, the Cavas restaurant and an underground cellar showcasing 250 carefully selected wine regions from the Mendoza region.

You’re likely to pass wildlife too on the drive, and may spot everything from red and grey foxes to cinnamon-coloured guanaco deer. Once you arrive at Perito Moreno, your guide will accompany you along the various walkways. With superb viewpoints and outstanding photo opportunities, Perito Moreno is a sight not to be missed.

Journey to the end of the world

In frontier city Ushuaia, there are plenty of opportunities to get active. Travellers can hike through beech forest to impressive viewpoints or kayak through the Ovando River and Green Lake. Perhaps the most enticing thing to do in Ushuaia, though, is to  ride the train to the End of the World . One of two narrow-gauge tracks left in Argentina, the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino once ferried prisoners from the island’s prisoners to work in the nearby National Park. The aptly named ‘Trencito de los Presos,’ or little train of the prisoners, journeys along the Pipo river until it reaches Macarena waterfalls. Along the way, passengers will be rewarded with stunning views of Monte Susana and the Martial Glacier, as well as a lesson in history.

Iguazu Falls boat trip

No trip to Argentina is complete without a visit to the captivating Iguazu Falls. With a Jacada private tour and boat trip , travellers can get closer than ever to the cascading waters. On the tour, travellers can explore the various wooden walkways that lead along the many chutes of the falls. To witness the stunning Devil’s Throat part of the falls, travellers can walk along a flat catwalk built above the Upper Iguazu River, where they’ll reach a magnificent lookout point.

Gourmet Buenos Aires

The Argentine capital is known for its culinary traditions. Specialising in everything from steak to chocolate, Buenos Aires is a foodie’s paradise. excellent in each and every aspect
On the whole, the trip was good, mostly because of Valentina, our tour guide. She took good care of every tour member and made the tour enjoyable for everybody. Thanks a lot, Val ?
The trip was amazing and the pristine environment in Antarctica needs to be seen and felt to be appreciated. Quark provided a platform to conduct the the trip in a sustainable manner, impeccable procedures to preserve the environment and also good food to enjoy. Thoroughly enjoyable and unforgettable trip. One suggestion for Quark is to clearly advise future participants to cater 2-3 days leeway to allow for flights delay or cancellation due to the changeable weather conditions. There was a 2 days delay for my trip due to planes being unable to land in Antarctica due to accumulated snow on the runway. This caused a frantic rush to change flights and other travel arrangements for many participants aggravated by the limited internet access in Antarctica which could be avoidable or mitigated if the participants were advised of probable delays prior to the trip.

Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciers National Park in Patagonia, Argentina

Private and Luxury Argentina Tours

The romance and rhythm of an Argentina tour can take so many joyful forms. A speedboat ride under the thundering Iguazu Falls, results in a thrilling dousing from the cascading waters. To the west, from an open-air café in the fantastically well-preserved colonial city of Salta, the illuminated pink-and-gold Salta Cathedral looks ethereal against the night sky.

You will undoubtedly meet gauchos, the horsemen of the pampas, and eat juicy steaks with fries, and crispy empanadas. But beyond these happy cliches there’s more. Part Latin, part European, Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires is many things to many people, but everyone will agree that it has swag. Where else is dancing the tango to live music in the middle of the street an everyday occurrence? Milongas are the parties to attend, to tap into the rhythmic heartbeat of this tango-loving nation.

And since it takes two to tango, you can plan the most harmonious Argentina private tours, in concert with an Enchanting Travels consultant. The  seasons in Argentina  are different owing to its location in the Southern Hemisphere, and the diversity of this vast country can be overwhelming, but we can ensure you get a perfect, obligation-free itinerary.

South of Buenos Aires, watch an orca breach in the Peninsula Valdes, while penguin chicks nestle in burrows nearby, and visitors swim with sea lion pups at Punta Loma. From this wildlife paradise, head on to Patagonia’s icy glaciers – to El Calafate and El Chalten, for some of the most captivating landscapes on the planet.

9 of the best places to visit in Argentina

A can’t-miss destination in South America,  Argentina will not disappoint even the most demanding traveler.

There is so much to see – from the southernmost city in the world to a desert plateau, from ski slopes to rainforests – and you must spend time in the glamorous and bustling metropolis of Buenos Aires.

Unless you have a couple months to spare, we suggest you pick out a couple destinations from our list, making sure that it’s the right season , and head out to discover the eighth-largest country in the world. There’s always something wonderful to do in Argentina.

A couple dressed all in black dance a tango together in the street with some people looking on

1. Buenos Aires

Best city in Argentina

Whatever you want, the city of Buenos Aires has it in droves. From Anchoita restaurant, serving the best ingredients (and wines) from across the country, to raucous football matches almost every day, glamour and fun are never far.

The capital boasts the most bookstores per capita in the world: Eterna Cadencia and Notanpuán are just two of dozens peppered throughout the city, while Plaza Italia and Parque Rivadavia host booksellers every day.

If you're looking for English-language titles, Walrus Books , in the old formerly aristocratic neighborhood of San Telmo, will not disappoint, though most bookstores have at least a small section in English, French and German.

There’s world-class opera, ballet and symphonic music at the Teatro Colón , and Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (MAMBA) and the Museo de Bellas Artes hold some of the very best art from Latin America and the world. Avenida Corrientes, with its pizzerias, late-night bookstores, and Broadway-caliber theaters, will never fail to entertain.

Local tip: Though Buenos Aires is lovely year-round , springtime – with purple jacaranda blossoms lining the streets – is particularly unforgettable, and the weather is usually perfect. Palermo and San Telmo are the best neighborhoods to stay for their convenience and density of restaurants and other attractions.

Heading to Buenos Aires? Plan where you'll go with our neighborhood guide

Best place for wine

The Andean province of Mendoza , with its hundreds of bodegas (winemakers) and delicious malbecs, cabernet sauvignons and syrahs measures up against just about any wine hot spot around the world.

Combine excursions to vineyards that offer daily tastings and workshops with some of the best cuisine in Argentina – the city of Mendoza received half of the country’s Michelin stars after the guide arrived in the country in 2023 – and some excellent outdoors activities like rafting and hiking, and you have the recipe for an excellent trip.

Planning tip: Bodegas and hotels fill up quickly, especially in the summer when Argentines travel, so be sure to book your slots at least a month in advance.

3. El Chaltén

Best place for hiking

The small Patagonia town of El Chaltén , in the province of Santa Cruz, is one of the premier trekking destinations of the world. Close to the imposing Fitz Roy mountain and the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares , those who want to give their journey South an exploratory twist cannot miss its truly unrivaled vistas and hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails.

Inside the same massive national park, accessible through the nearby city of El Calafate , is the 30km-long, 5km-wide and 60m-high (18-miles-long, 3-miles-wide, 197ft-high)  Glaciar Perito Moreno , famous for the massive sheets of ice that break off in the summer near the viewing platform and into the water below.

Planning tip: Avoid going in the wintertime if at all possible as a lot of trails will be closed and the weather conditions can be truly inhospitable. No matter the season, pack a windbreaker – you won’t regret it.

4. Mar del Plata, the Atlantic Coast

Best place for a summer escape

Though Argentina is not famous for its beaches, Mar del Plata  is Argentina’s favorite summer holiday destination, its central hotel-casino a symbol of Argentina’s modernization in the 1930s and '40s.

The city hosts an iconic film festival  and is the beloved birthplace of the alfajores (cookie-type sandwiches usually stuffed with dulce de leche).

Most Argentines will have beloved childhood memories in the city’s center, surrounded by shops, panqueques (like a dulce de leche crepe), and churros filled with dulce de leche.

Planning tip:  If the city is a little too much, smaller towns like Cariló are more intimate and no less beautiful, and only a few hours’ drive from the city of Buenos Aires.

Visitors on a boardwalk admiring a vast network of waterfalls

5. Iguazú Falls

Best place for waterfalls

Located at the “triple border” between Argentina, Brazil , and Paraguay , the Iguazú region has the most impressive network of waterfalls in the world.

Accessible from both Argentina and Brazil and in the middle of a dense, luxuriant rainforest, there’s a reason the falls were selected as one of seven “Natural Wonders of the World” in 2011 and UNESCO declared them a World Heritage Site in 1984.

Be ready to move across the Argentina–Brazil border, and don’t miss the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s throat), the Falls’ gargantuan centerpiece. Though the central chute of the falls falls technically on the Brazilian side, the Argentina viewing platform is better located.

Planning tip: Many of the attractions are on the Brazilian side. The land border between Brazil and Argentina is breezy to cross, though there’s often a line, especially around 6pm – tourists sometimes cross it multiple times a day. Do not forget your passport!

6. Bariloche

Best place to spend time by the lake

Located on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, and nested in an Andean valley, the city of Bariloche is the premier tourist destination in the Argentine Patagonia .

Trust us, there’s no dreamier sight than temperate forests and pristine lakesides hidden in between the mountains.

Camping in the Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes) district, organized around a road headed from neighboring hippie hot spot Villa la Angostura to San Martín de los Andes, is a rite of passage for Argentines, and with the world’s best chocolate to boot, a trip to Bariloche is well worth your time.

Bariloche is next to to Cerro Catedral, the largest winter sports resort in South America and the legendary home of winter sports in Argentina. Endless trails, abundance of food options and scenic landscapes – overlooking the many lakes in the area – make it a destination not to be missed.

Planning tip: Drive the Seven Lakes Scenic Road, or take the bus, for an unforgettable excursion into some jaw-droppingly beautiful mountainous lakes in the middle of the Andes, between Bariloche and San Martín de los Andes. The drive only takes a few hours.

A solitary figure walks out on vast salt flats, white flat land streching featureless into the distance

7. Quebrada de Humahuaca and Salinas Grandes, Jujuy

Best place for unforgettable mountains and salt flats

Though less famous than their Patagonian counterparts, the Andes in Northwestern Argentina are just as breathtaking. Quebrada de Humahuaca in the province of Jujuy, near the border with Bolivia , has a plethora of unforgettable sights to behold, from grazing guanacos to striped mountains that range in color from almost white to deep purple.

From the Hornocal mountain range’s almost psychedelic hues to the Salinas Grandes salt flats, one of the largest in the world, Jujuy will challenge your sense of nature’s possibilities.

And it has the history to match, with some of the earliest evidence of human habitation in the Southern Cone and a rich indigenous cultural influence to this day.

Having been near the Southern edge of the Inca empire, the Kolla, Atacama, Quechua, and Omaguaca people carry on their traditions despite centuries of colonialism.

The cuisine is not to be missed. The town of Tilcara hosts El Nuevo Progreso , an award-winning restaurant that elevates ancestral dishes like Humita en Chala –  a mix of cheese and corn wrapped in a corn husk and steamed – and tamales to gourmet exquisiteness with avant-garde techniques. Llama meat is a unique delicacy of the region, often made into salami.

Planning tip: The Humahuaca Valley is over 3000m (9843ft) above sea level, and some attractions are up to 4350m (14,272ft) above sea level. Make sure you’re prepared for the low oxygen. Locals chew coca leaves, a natural energetic, for help with the height, but candies made with coca flour are on sale everywhere in Jujuy. Painkillers can help with headaches.

Best place for reaching Antarctica

The city of Ushuaia (population: 82,000) is the southernmost city in the world. Underneath the Andes and just 1000km (620 miles) from Antarctica  to the south, Ushuaia’s austere and often stormy beauty cannot be understated.

The city is a major global nexus for hiking in the summer and draws snow sports enthusiasts to Cerro Castor Ski Resort in the winter. There’s excellent local cuisine like world-famous cordero patagónico – lamb cooked low and slow over an open fire – and crab, caught nearby and always as fresh as can be.

Planning tip: Make sure you pack a winter jacket – even in summer, the temperature rarely breaks 15°C (59°F).

9. Parque Nacional Iberá

Best place for bird-watching

The Iberá Estuary in the northeastern province of Corrientes, has some of the most extraordinary bird populations in the world.

Arrange a kayak or boat trip from the small town of Carlos Pellegrini to see the over 360 bird species, such as the majestic southern screamer, various types of heron, and the grumpy-looking guira cuckoo, as well as monkeys and unique reptiles that thrive in the area.

The Iberá also bears the marks of centuries of colonization and ruins of Jesuit “missions” – where Guaranís and other indigenous groups were taught Spanish and Catholic doctrine – that were abandoned in the 18th century following the order’s expulsion from the region.

Buenos Aires - Private Travel

They don’t call it the Paris of South America for nothing. The cultural significance of Buenos Aires, the most visited city in South America, is built on its preserved and eclectic Belle Epoque architecture, its cosmopolitan café society, and a much-loved, dramatic, and passionate persona. Tucked up on Rio de La Plata right on the border between Argentina and Uruguay, Buenos Aires is a sexy and passionate hodgepodge of Latin style and sophistication waiting to be explored.

From the cobblestone alleys to the grand tree-lined boulevards, the Argentinian capital is awash in color and light, and sound. The Palermo district and its enclaves are home to innovative restaurants, trendy cocktail bars, boutique hotels, and spirited shops. This is where you will also find the MALBA, a dynamic museum filled with incredible Latin American art. Bohemian San Telmo draws day-trippers into its antique shops and galleries, with the late-night crowd stopping by for

steaks and Malbec. Top attractions in Buenos Aires include the popular shopping district on Florida Street, the international opera house Teatro Colón and the landmark Palacio Barolo, its architecture inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. The city’s storied history is almost palpable in the busy Plaza de Mayo, anchored by Casa Rosada,

its balcony made famous by former First Lady Eva Perón. A relaxing stroll through the statues and stone mausoleums of Recoleta Cemetery is a beautiful way to spend a sunny afternoon. And the best for last—the tango, a Buenos Aires essential, truly an emblem of the nation. Tapping a toe or taking a lesson, you can’t help but be moved, drawn into its athletic and sensual pulse.

Inside Two Argentinan Winery Stays That Are Perfect For A "Slow Living" Experience

Inside Two Argentinan Winery Stays That Are Perfect For A "Slow Living" Experience

In case you didn’t know, Argentina, specifically Mendoza, is the epicenter of global wine culture. Known for its Malbecs, the area’s more than 1,000 vineyards beckon oenophiles from all over the world to savor its region’s most robust varietals, and simply take in the genteel splendor of the area.

A lively city to the east of Mount Aconcagua, Mendoza sits atop the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, offering stunning views of mountain ranges, including the Andes, rolling hills of green and miles of vineyards that are home to beautiful wine options.

I was invited to visit two of the region’s premier wineries, SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites and La Morada in the Uco Valley, to experience the boutique hotels stays, restaurants and of course, the full-bodied wines that both establishments had to offer.

Getting there

Delta and LATAM Airlines recently partnered to deploy flights to “connect the America s ,” offering direct routes to serve more than 300 destinations across Central, South and North America. I was able to catch a direct flight to Buenos Aires from the JFK airport in New York, which called for a 11 hour flight time. The long ride was made pleasurable because of Delta One®, the airline’s first-class offering which boasts spacious lie-flat seats, complimentary access to Delta Sky Club and use of Sky Priority services.

SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites

Inside Two Argentinan Winery Stays That Are Perfect For A “Slow Living” Experience

Nestled in the heart of Mendoza,   SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites  is one of the only high-end boutique wine resorts in the region that doesn’t have an on-site vineyard, but what it does offer is one of the most immersive wellness experiences you’ll probably ever have.

Inside Two Argentinan Winery Stays That Are Perfect For A “Slow Living” Experience

Owned and concepted by renowned winemaker Susana Balbo, the property was established after she ran one of Argentina’s most successful wineries, the first woman in the country to do so. It’s safe to say she has a penchant for innovation.

SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites is the only luxury wine hotel in Latin America with fully integrated in-room smart spa features and services in each suite, which all boast an individual steam room, sensations shower, locally made bath amenities, and massage table and a dry sauna (select rooms).

I was able to receive an incredible in-room deep tissue massage and full body scrub that awakened all of my senses. Highly recommend!

The rooms enjoy a high-powered connectivity system that allows for everything from light dimming to the surround sound music system to turn on with the press of a button on a tablet.

“I believe in the power of wellness and this hotel is the embodiment of that,” Balbo shared during a 14-course (and yes, I ate every one of them!) meticulously thoughtful meal in the dining quarters of the property. Alongside her daughter Ana Lovaglio Balbo, the wellness suites are soulfully decorated with priceless artworks and lush textiles.

Offering an on-site Michelin-recommended restaurant, La VidA features traditional a Argentinian menu curated by Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef Flavia Amad Di Leo. I was able to experience a gastronomic meal themed after the hotel’s signature art piece, t he Tree of Life by Sergio Roggerone which highlights most important stages in a person’s life. Of course, every meal was paired with a Susana Balbo original wine.

Speaking of wine, we know why we’re here. Let’s talk about it.

Created by Balbo and her family, you have the chance to delve into personalized wine experiences that includes wine tastings, pairing recommendations, wine safari, and winemaking. Led by the resort’s sommelier, guests can taste options with five different flavor profiles (sweet, bitter, sour, salty and umami). Known as the Queen of  Queen of Torrontés for her pioneering work with the native white grape, the Susana Balbo Signature Brioso White Blend is a hit if you’re looking for a floral and citrusy drink, perfect for the summer season.

And beginning in July through September, Delta One customers can enjoy Balbo’s wines on their flights and in the lounge.

La Morada Life

Imagine this. Unending vineyard expanses lined with breathtaking Andes Mountain views flanked by…tiny houses. That’s what you’ll get when you visit the newly opened La Morada Life property in wine region of Los Chacayes.

Created for guests with space on the mind, the luxury mini homes features a full bedroom, living room, fully equipped bathroom, patio and a hot tub.

La Morada Lodge’s on-site restaurant Hornero is helmed by Irish-born chef Edward Holloway, and boasts a menu that pays homage to traditional Argentian cuisine, sourced with Mendoza-grown ingredients.

I was able to enjoy family style dinner situated on the lodge’s outdoor grounds under twinkling lights and an open fire.

Inside Two Argentinan Winery Stays That Are Perfect For A “Slow Living” Experience

“The best experiences and conversations happen around a well-served table,” the team shared with ESSENCE in a statement. “We want Hornero to hit that relaxed note…a place to be enjoyed with friends and family again and again. For this reason our menu is designed with dishes which come straight from the oven to the middle of the table, ready to to be enjoyed by everyone.”

The menu is an omnivore’s dream, consisting of slow cooked leg of lamb with seasonal vegetables, and smoked ribeye with confit of garlic and sage among a litany of other options, including freshly smoked whole goat.

“Our wine cellar pays tribute to the great wines that Argentina produces,” the lodge shared with ESSENCE in a statement. “That’s why we have labels that come from different regions of the country, from Chubut to Jujuy. However, we have a strong focus on the IG Los Chacayes and the Uco Valley, as we work hand in hand with our neighbours, not only in terms of wines.”

Led by the renowned sommelier Andrés Rosberg, La Morada’s beverage offerings include everything from options pulled from its over ten thousand bottles of rare wines.

If you’re looking for a way to make the world stop in the most delicious way, travel to Argentina’s wine country.
