Installing a Fuel Pump with a New Harness Connector on a 1999-2003 Chevrolet or GMC Truck?
On many GM applications, the wiring harness that connects to the fuel pump assembly is not properly inspected as part of fuel system repair. This harness is prone to failure, leading to misdiagnosis and vehicle come-backs. Connector housing cracks, pin and contact looseness, and wire crimp issues can cause symptoms that simulate an issue with the fuel pump. It is recommended that the wiring connector be replaced with the pump to avoid unnecessary problems.
*Tech Note: When replacing the fuel pump harness connector be sure to remove as much of the old wiring as possible. For example, if the connector had a poor connection this would create a resistance problem resulting in heat. This excessive heat melts the wiring insulation allowing moisture to enter and corrode the wiring, resulting in future problems.
How to identify the fuel pump wiring harness connector on 1999-2003 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks: first look at the new pig-tail connector. You can separate these four wires into two circuits by the gauge (diameter or thickness) of the wire; two wires will be bigger gauge than the other two. The thicker gauge wires are for the pump to handle the higher voltage drawl. The smaller gauge wires are for the level sensor, a low voltage circuit.
Wiring color does vary from model to model, but with noting the wire diameter this is easy to work through. Working with the larger two diameter wires first, the black wire (pump ground) will match to another large diameter black wire. The 12 volt pump feed wire will be most-likely gray but it is not unusual to see a white wire here (just be sure of the gauge diameter).
Now working with the two smaller gauge wires for the fuel level sensor. The level sensor signal wire is purple and sometimes with a white tracer stripe; this will match up with the connector purple wire. For the level sensor reference wire, the orange/black wire (on the supplied connector) will connect to the smaller black wire on the vehicle harness. *NOTE: On very early models this small black ground wire may not there. No problem, just connect this wire to the other ground (the large diameter black wire).

I've been trying to pull up a good solid picture of the wiring colors that go from my harness to the fuel pump. I'm just trying to double check that the colors go with the right colors. Grey on grey black on black ect ... Ect.. So far goole is failing me . Does anyone have a pdf download that I can use that has a simple basic wire colors to the other wires. I'm needing the actual picture of the colors . Not the colors written in words.
There are changes from year to year. Is this a replacement pump with a new harness that has to be spliced into the factory harness at the pump? They usually come with a diagram that shows which wires go where...they don't always match. What year/engine do you have?

The last four of the VIN do not help. What counts is everything but the last six.
Have You checked AutoZone.com. They have pretty good "repair guides" for most of these trucks. You have to log in on their website (sign up with your email). Then Add your vehicle on your "my vehicles" list at https://www.autozone.com/user/myVehicle Once it's on there, look for the "vehicle repair guides" link on your vehicle's entry on that list. On Your truck, I'm pretty sure fuel pump power is gray wire, fuel pump ground is the black wire. Both of those should be bigger, 14AWG or 12AWG wires. Fuel level sender is the thinner purple wire and the black with the white stripe. Some pumps use a different pigtail connector, and possibly different colors on the pigtail wiring harness. Refer to the instructions and diagram that came with the pump to connect that new pigtail.

There was actually a recall for this. Go to your local GMdealer and have them check your VIN for a recall. If not under recall get out of there its easy to repair yourself don't let'em fool you.Remove the front pads caliper and rotors. Locate the abs sensor mounted to the wheelbearing assembly by a small socket head cap screw (Allen wrench). Removethe bolt and softly gently/wiggle the abs sensor around until it pops upout of the hole. some will break, which is why it wouldbe nice if the recall applies to your vehicle that way if they break gm replaces. Once you get both sides removed, clean themounting surface of all rust or build up with w-d 40 and small steel toothbrush then wipe off excess with clean rag and mild soap and warm water, dry completely make sure no spray residue exist on parts, Next apply a thin layer of lubricant grease to preventfuture rusting and reassemble.The rust build up under the sensor is causing the angle to change resultingin inaccurate wheel speed readings in the abs module your abs module will interprets this asa wheel is either slipping or skidding and applies your abs. Initially since the fuel pump is located in the gas tank ,it is not a task for the average home mechanic. It is electric puts out about 15 lbs. pressure uses the gas in the tank as a coolant. In older models it is possible to have the pump wiring burn and short out.The results could be a fire or if you are fortunate pump failure. There are 4 hoses comimg out of the tank that are held on by clamps get those of then un clamp the filler hose then un screw bolts holding the tank and it drops right down. You need to open the tank then you can put in the new pump witch is 40 dollars make sure its facing the same way as took it out then you slide it back in close up the tank then raiseit up put the 4 bolts back in to hold it up the put the 4 hoses back on were they go tightin the clamps and you are done.

If the pump is in the gas tank,which most new vehicles are, you'll have to drop the gas tank, to remove the pump and sender. Make sure you do this with as little fuel in it as possible,seeing that fuel is like 8-10 lbs. per gallon. Good luck.

drain the radiator coolant,remove air cleaner assy,remove the mass iarfow,remove the upper shruod,remove drive belt,remove fan and fan blade assy,remove coolant pump bolts and pulley,disconnect the coolant byoass hose and clamp,disconnect the radiator hose from coolant pump,remove the 4 coolant punp bolts coolant pump and the gasket,,revise at installation.

Tracing a short in the 5v reference wire that goes from VCM(computer) to MAP and EGR and this FSGM(this is what it's called on the Mitchell1) wiring diagram. As far as I know that sending unit is in the tank along with fuel pump. Same job as replacing the fuel pump. Check your grounds and ground wire coming from the fuel tank first before deciding to drop the tank to get at the sensor. Those grounds are often the source of issues.

Just an update. Turns out that there were two issues. Shorted spider and this damn'd sender gauge module. Confirmed tonight that yes, it is the module. Only took 3 weeks of chasing but I got the little bitch. Anyone know what years came with this module? I have a '98 factory manual (all 3 parts) and there is NO mention of it. I assume it is used only on '96 & '97 of the Gen II's.
I would assume. I don't remember any mention for my '99 or for my '93, but the '93 has a module that you have to reprogram if you change the axle ratio or tire size.
I can't even find any mention of the part in a google search. Odd. It obviously exists, I'm looking at it on the desk right now, and it is shown on the '97 wiring diagram from Mitchell and I've seen factory diagrams where it is shown.
If it helps, at least in one place the module is also called fuel sender buffer module. I still can't find it anywhere, but maybe you should grab one from a junkyard if you can. Or ask at the (gasp) stealership.
[UPDATE] CRANK/NO START FIXED! Just an update to anyone who might run into this issue. A sudden failure while running turned out to be caused by this module. It shorted internally pulling the 5v reference lines down to .01v. Found good one in junk yard solved the issue. They are available new via Amazon too. Good luck.
