Meet The Boss
Q: This year marks almost a decade of Tsheola Dinare Tour’s existence. Take us through the early start of the company and the vision that informed it?
A: The seed was planted by the decision I took back then that I will never ever wanted to work for someone after I was laid off by the previous employer. From this, a vision to create an environment where people worked without having to worry about being dismissed was born. This vision was accompanied by my deep passion for the hospitality industry and the realization that there is so much that our beautiful country can offer to tourists.
Q: Starting a business can be a daunting task as much as it can be exciting, what’s the one thing you’ve learned in your journey of becoming an entrepreneur?
A: I have learned that people are different and their individual needs to be managed in a manner that accommodates each one of them
Q: The hospitality industry in South Africa and tourism is alive with ample opportunities for job creation- which is one of your biggest passions. How important is it to support the local economy and travel businesses to make this a reality?
A: When we support the local economy, this speaks directly to our vision of contributing to job creation in this country. What people tend to go and seek out in other countries, South Africa has it all – from seeing the big five to the magnificent outdoors and the sunny climate perfect for outdoor adventures, you name it. We just need to market all of these credentials more and work harder to make travel affordable.
Q: What exactly sets Tsheola Dinare Travel & Tours apart from its competitors?
A: We are flexible to clients’ needs and go beyond expectation.

Must have a vision for business success, how women can take charge of their financial future by building a startup, 6 successful south african businesses that were launched from living rooms and garages.
If there’s one thing Jojo Tsheola knows how to do it’s to make the most of every small opportunity that comes his way. Founder of Tsheola Dinare Tours, he’s singled out gaps in the market, identified openings for growth, sought partnerships, fostered relationships, and swum as a small fish in a really big pond to build an award-winning business. In the early days there was no single big break, cash injection or lucrative deal — his story is a lesson in working hard to make the most of the little things that come your way.
A business is born
Formerly employed as a cleaner and having worked his way up to become a certified tourist guide at the Shongololo Express, Tsheola was dealt a tremendous blow when he lost his job in 2005. “I dearly loved Shongololo Express and it was a heart-breaking experience for me. But there and then I decided that I would never be dismissed again,” he recalls.
Instead of returning to the job market, he partnered with various people in a number of tour operating projects. And while none of them worked out the way he planned, he used the experience to gather the information and skills he needed to start his own operation. Tsheola Dinare Tours was born in 2007 with a view to servicing the corporate market.
“My idea was to do airport and hotel transfers and take both international and local executives to and from meetings,” Tsheola explains. But while chatting to clients he quickly realised that many of them had free time on their hands in-between their work commitments. Could Tsheola show them around to a couple of local tourism hotspots? “It was a captive market and something that could differentiate me, so I went for it.”
Getting a foot in the door
The tourism sector is extremely competitive and single-man tour operators are a dime a dozen. Tsheola’s biggest challenge was to break into his target market — big name companies with national and international footprints, the kind of organisations that would fly directors to meetings on a regular basis. “I was new and unknown with no previous references and no reputation to speak of,” he says. But he also knew that while large contracts were the end-goal, all he needed was a small opportunity to get him going.
“I put together a really professional-looking profile and sent it out to the five companies I had done transfers for after losing my job. They came back telling me I’d have to become a registered vendor,” he recalls. As is usually the case, the process was onerous for a new business and didn’t guarantee any immediate work. “But I knew it was the only way to get my foot in the door, so I got together all the documentation required and it paid off. I was on the list,” he says.
Building skills and relationships
But Tsheola didn’t only concentrate on building relationships with clients. “I looked at the various stakeholders in the tourism industry too,” he says. He sought out the assistance and partnership of the Gauteng Tourism Authority and Johannesburg Tourism Company, attending their forums and workshops.
“I learned a great deal from those workshops, skills that enabled me to position myself professionally. And of course you make contacts when you interact with others in your industry. It helped me to become more widely known,” he says.
While handling VIP transport for a major event, Tsheola so impressed Joburg Tourism that they worked to facilitate business linkages and supplier opportunities for him. In 2009, he was named winner of the Gauteng Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year Award and runner-up in the national competition. More recently the company was listed as a finalist at the Africa Growth Institute 2010 SMME awards. “These sorts of connections with the industry have been important for me,” Tsheola says.
Taking the gap
So too has been his ability to grab business when it comes his way. One night in 2009 he received a phone call asking if he could handle the transport for the Miss World contest the following day, after their supplier had let them down. Tsheola jumped at the opportunity and was awarded a major month-long contract.
After meeting and taking the business card of a European contact at Indaba in 2009, he kept in contact and slowly built a relationship that ended in a contract to do the ground handling for 21 large companies, representing 700 people.
It’s this kind of willingness to pursue every relationship and opportunity that has built Tsheola Dinare from a single-man business that hired vehicles as and when it needed them to an award-winning company with 14 vehicles employing 21 people. A great lesson for others to follow.
Secrets to success
- Build relationships – not only with clients but with stakeholders, industry bodies and forums in your sector. It’ll bring you into contact with the right people
- Talk to clients continually – not just when you want business from them. It will help you understand their additional needs and highlight new opportunities to meet these.
- Pursue all opportunities – not just those that promise immediate business. Putting out feelers in every direction will help to spread your net wide. Some of them are bound to pay off in the end.
- Follow up with new contacts – ensure the connections you make are worthwhile, not just a once-off exchange of business cards. Follow up and stay in touch.

Cleaner-turned-entrepreneur inspires youth through tourism business
Jojo Tsheola has always been a big dreamer and had a keen interest in the tourism business. Even while he was working as a cleaner, he continued to believe he would accomplish his teenage dream of leaving Limpopo to make a career in tourism. He is now celebrating a decade of operating Tsheola Dinare Tours and Travel.
Tsheola's business started off with two beat-up Toyota Corollas and, a decade later, has a fleet of 80 vehicles. Foundered in Mondeor, Johannesburg, the business has extended its services to Durban and Cape Town.
Prior to opening the doors to Tsheola Dinare Tours and Travel, Tsheola faced the challenge of keeping his dream alive. While the possibility of starting a tourism business seemed bleak after he left his job as a cleaner and started working on a train, Tsheola’s determination saw him through. "Challenges are always there and it gets harder every day. The only difference is our persistence," he said.

He is keen for his success to be seen as a beacon of light to those on a similar path, no matter how hopeless they might feel. "I hope it will inspire society, especially young people, to take the initiative of pursuing their goals and dreams, no matter the circumstances and background they come from," he said.
Tsheola attributes his success to identifying a gap in the corporate travel sector – business people were in need of a service that would also allow them to travel for leisure. The Gauteng Tourism Authority and South African Tourism supported him when he was starting out and helped make the "vibrant" team at Tsheola Dinare Tours and Travel a reality he is proud of.
The company is committed to skills transfer and helping to alleviate unemployment among the black youth. "At Dinare, we are very passionate about youth empowerment and we strive to create as many job opportunities as possible, hence we decided to open offices in Cape Town and Durban," Tsheola said.
- Lifestyle changes give birth to Yo Coco
Tsheola said a common mistake made by many who entered the tourism sector was limiting themselves to mundane ideas that were not sustainable. "Identify what the needs and gaps are in the industry and attack them with passion. It’s also important to love tourism and travel," he said, adding that it was not an easy nine-to-five job.
Although he has witnessed many fail in their ventures, Tsheola urged more youths to get involved in tourism. "There are few black players in the industry and I encourage young black people to consider getting into this exciting business of selling your country to the world."
Tsheola Dinare Tours and Travel not only offers a chauffeur service but also tour packages to corporate businesses. To view their services, you can visit their website at dinaretours.co.za or their Facebook page at Tsheola Dinare Tours, Transport & Business Concierge. You can also follow them on Instagram and Twitter under the handle @dinaretours.

This Black-owned Tour Operator Business Grew its Fleet to 60 Vehicles
Updated on 6 September 2018
![dinare tours article featured image](https://smesouthafrica.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/mercedes-benz-car-luxury-1.jpg)
Jojo Tsheola of Johannesburg started his tour operating business in 2007 by transporting clients in a friend’s vehicle. In 2008, Tsheola got his first vehicle financed.
Tsheola is now the owner of 60 vehicles that transports tourists in three different cities: Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Their vehicles vary from the latest Corollas, Mercedes Benz C Class, Vitos, Sprinters and Quantums.
![dinare tours](https://www.smesouthafrica.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Jojo-Tsheola_1-300x260.jpg)
According to Tsheola, the main objective of his company Tsheola Dinare Tours and Transport is to convert a business traveller into a tourist. “From half day tours in the townships, city tours to safari. Our clients choose their own tours.”
The business tourism market
Tsheola lost his job in 2005 which led to him starting his company. “My idea (then) was to do airport and hotel transfers and to take both international and local executives to-and-from meetings,” he told the online magazine Entrepreneur in October 2011.
Chatting to his clients made him aware of the free time on they had in between work commitments.
He got his big break when he managed to establish partnerships and collaborations with big name companies with national and international footprints. He has worked with the Gauteng Tourism Authority and Johannesburg Tourism Company.
In 2009, Tsheola won the Gauteng Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year and was a runner-up in the national competition. His company was also listed as a finalist at the Africa Growth Institute 2010 SMME awards.
These accolades helped Tsheola grow his staff numbers. He told the Breaking Travel News in May 2011 that his employees contribute to the growth of the company.
Be passionate about what you do. Be customer focused and always look for opportunities in the market
Building connections
When Tsheola started his business, he mainly marketed his services at conferences such as the Africa’s travel trade show, INDABA and Meetings Africa.
Before the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, he went to all the preparation meetings for this big event. This is how he made connections and it led to him getting a big contract for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Currently, Tsheola said, marketing at trade shows is not the only channel to get their name out there. “We are active on social media and we also have an extensive Public Relations plan.”
His advice to entrepreneurs who want to market themselves at conferences is: “They must go in there with one objective, which is to market and not expect immediate monetary results.
“They need to prepare the products and make sure that their offering is unique and be able to sell it to the buyers.”
Market opportunities
Tsheola said that they partner with other suppliers in order to deliver on required services. “We also outsource where needed, especially on coaches.”
According to Tsheola, they have a full time staff of 120 across the country. “For now, we are growing our domestic tourism component, which also attracts international business travellers.
“When all has reached a stable level, we will tap into the international market, starting by our neighbouring countries like Lesotho, Mozambique and Botswana.”
Tsheola said his recipe for success in the tourism industry is his love for working as a tour operator. “Be passionate about what you do. Be customer focused and always look for opportunities in the market.”
