Really a 30sec musical transition between everythg

The story was okay. It's a pretty rough start, by chapter 4 it was okay. If you have not been driven nuts by the 30 sec musical transitions between scenes. Have they never seen a movie with music in the background. Kind of short and not the best ending.

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Adapted Means Abridged

I read this book a few decades ago. I remember the book having much more content that would appease most Trekkies. I enjoyed the late James Doohan’s narration, but there was a bit of bait and switch on the description saying that Leonard Nimoy narrates. I did listen to the sample, but hoped it wasn’t a direct sampling, but that was my fault so treat this as cautionary. Overall the abridged story was not as pleasing to me, and the music could have been more abridged. I don’t regret the experience, but it just wasn’t as good as I hoped.

I think this is the story prior to one of the Star Trek movies. I didn't expect that it will sustain my interest up to the end of the story. The plot is simple, but interesting. I want to listen to more Star Trek books by Dillard. I also like Nimoy and Doohan's narrations.

Its five-year mission completed, the USS Enterprise returns to Spacedock in Earth orbit. Captain James T. Kirk is nervous about the fact that he has not yet received confirmation of his next assignment, having requested the captaincy of the USS Victorious ten weeks earlier. Kirk encourages Spock to take command of the newly-commissioned USS Grissom , but Spock wishes to continue to serve as Kirk's first officer and science officer and is displeased that Kirk has not requested that he be assigned to the Victorious with him. Kirk is being pressured to accept a promotion to the admiralty; he contacts Admiral Gregor Fortenberry , the " Detailer " who directs Starfleet assignments, who informs him that his request has been put on hold for review by Fleet Admiral Heihachiro Nogura . Dr. McCoy tells Kirk that his report as Chief Medical Officer recommended against Kirk's promotion, and that he has told Nogura the same, threatening to resign from Starfleet if Kirk is removed from field command. McCoy is planning to visit the Yonadan people, including his love Natira , on their new planet.

Lieutenant Jonathon Stanger , Enterprise' s Security Second-in-Command, has been promoted to the post of security chief on the Victorious , but is unhappy because his lover, the Andorian Lieutenant Lamia , has been assigned to the USS Exeter . Stanger and Lamia attend the Security farewell party, hosted by Security Chief Ingrit Tomson . Kirk and McCoy visit the party, and Stanger tactlessly asks Kirk whether his assignment as captain of the Victorious has come through yet. Kirk and McCoy then attend the Engineering party, where Will Decker is in attendance. Kirk is stunned when Admiral Nogura enters Engineering, having arrived on board without Kirk's knowledge.

william-shatner-star-trek-return

William Shatner recently told Canadian Press that he wouldn’t rule out returning as Captain Kirk in a new “ Star Trek ” project if the script impressed him. While the actor’s age might pose an issue as Shatner turned 93 years old in March, that’s nothing a bit of de-aging technology couldn’t fix.

“It’s an intriguing idea,” Shatner said about returning as Kirk. “It’s almost impossible. But if was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.”

Popular on Variety

“[It] takes years off of your face, so that in a film you can look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger than you are,” Shatner said.

Another issue around Shatner’s “Star Trek” return is Kirk’s death in the 1994 film “Star Trek Generations,” which is the last time Shatner appeared in the iconic franchise. He’s already brainstormed a plot device that could serve as a workaround and have his version of Kirk come back to life.

“A company that wants to freeze my body and my brain for the future might be a way of going about it,” Shatner said. “‘We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here.’ There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. Oh, look at that. Here comes Captain Kirk!’”

Variety exclusively reported in March that Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” had signed on to write the script for “Star Trek 4.” The movie is being designed as the final installment for Pine and the cast. Several attempts to get a fourth “Star Trek” movie off the ground with this cast have failed over the years. One version of the project was to be directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) and written by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”). Shakman left the project to direct Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” instead.

Other “Star Trek” projects remain in development at Paramount as well. The studio is working with screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and director by Toby Haynes (“Black Mirror: USS Callister”) on an origin story movie, while a project with screenwriter Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) that was first announced in 2021 also remains in development.

Star Trek: DS9 Predicted The Klingon-Cardassian War 2 Years Earlier

  • Deep Space Nine accurately predicted the Klingon-Cardassian War two years before it occurred in season 4, destabilizing the Federation's relationships.
  • The addition of Worf to the DS9 cast in season 4 marked a reboot for the show, improving public perception significantly.
  • The conflict between Cardassians and Klingons in Garak's novel led to devastating losses for Cardassians, eroding their culture and autonomy.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine predicted a war between the Cardassians and Klingons two years before the conflict broke out in DS9 season 4. The Klingon-Cardassian War was a flashpoint in the conflict between the Federation, their allies, and the Dominion. Instigated by a Changeling infiltrator within the Klingon Empire, the war between the Klingons and Cardassians raged between 2372 and 2373 . The bloody conflict was a successful attempt to destabilize the Federation's relationships with its allies, and was a key moment in the lead up to DS9 's Dominion War .

The conflict with the Klingons was so severe that it inspired Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) to have Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) assigned to DS9 full time as both an advisor and tactical officer. The Klingon-Cardassian War, and the addition of Worf to the cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in season 4 was a soft reboot for the show, that led to a significant improvement in public perception of DS9 . However, a throwaway line in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 22, "The Wire", predicted the whole conflict, even before DS9 's writers conceived of the Klingon-Cardassian War .

I Didnt Know Where Roddenberry Got The Name Klingon In Star Trek Until Now

Ds9 predicted star treks klingon-cardassian war 2 years earlier, "who wins" "who do you think".

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 22, "The Wire" centers on the friendship between Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson) as DS9's chief medical officer fights to save the Cardassian tailor's life. With Garak's condition stabilized by the end of the episode, Garak and Bashir resume their weekly lunch dates, where they discuss the merits of Federation and Cardassian literature. Garak lends Bashir a novel set in a potential future where the Cardassian Union is at war with the Klingon Empire . When asked by Bashir who wins the war, Garak wryly replies " Who do you think? "

"The Wire" is a pivotal episode for Garak and the Cardassians, as it introduces the Obsidian Order, and officially names the Cardassians' home planet as Cardassia Prime.

The Cardassian-Klingon war in Garak's novel was not intended as ominous foreshadowing by writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe. Instead, it was a joke about how Garak saw his taste in literature as more refined than Bashir's, despite it being jingoistic propaganda about the Cardassians' superiority over the Klingon Empire. It was only later, when Rick Berman suggested adding Worf to the cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , that the idea of a conflict between the Klingons and Cardassians was devised as a way to justify bringing Michael Dorn's beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation character aboard .

Garak Was Wrong, The Cardassians Lost The Klingon War

"please, doctor. spare me your insufferable federation optimism. of course it will survive, but as not the cardassia i knew.".

The war between the Klingon Empire and the Cardassian Union effectively came to an end when Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) negotiated for the Cardassians to join the Dominion. In the short term, this meant that the Cardassians were able to repel the Klingon forces with the help of the Jem'Hadar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 15, "By Inferno's Light". In the long term, it led to a longer conflict that ultimately decimated Cardassia Prime. The alliance with the Dominion cost the Cardassians dearly, as their autonomy was eroded by the tyrany of the Female Changeling (Salome Jens) and Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs).

Garak and Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) aided the Cardassian military in rising up against the Dominion in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's finale, but their former allies unleashed devastating reprisals against Cardassia Prime. Eight hundred million Cardassians died, a combination of the losses incurred during the Battle of Cardassia, and those incurred by the Dominion's violent reprisals. Gul Dukat may have secured the Cardassians a momentary victory in the war against the Klingons, but he signed the death warrant for eight hundred million of his fellow Cardassians and erased much of the culture, art, music, and literature that was so beloved by Garak.

Teenager Finds Rare LEGO Figure That's Been Missing for 27 Years

A teenager finds a rare LEGO minifigure that has been lost at sea for the past 27 years during a seemingly normal fishing trip with their parents.

  • A rare LEGO octopus figure has been found after 27 years lost at sea, with only 4,200 made and being lost as part of a famous 1997 cargo ship spill.
  • A young boy uncovered the sought-after black LEGO octopus while fishing with his parents, with it eluding them for 2 years.
  • The discovery of the rare LEGO figure has inspired the boy to find another rare LEGO piece that went missing following the 1997 storm.

A teenager recently uncovered a rare LEGO octopus minifigure that was lost for the past 27 years. In 1997, a cargo ship containing thousands of LEGO pieces was caught in a storm 20 miles off Land’s End, Cornwall. This resulted in nearly five million LEGO pieces falling into the sea, with many of them being related to pirate or ocean exploration-based sets of the time.

One of the rarest and most sought-after pieces from the infamous spill was the black LEGO octopus figure, which has been included in about 14 sets across several different themes including LEGO’s own “Aquazone” and “Alpha Team” lines in addition to one licensed LEGO Harry Potter set back in 2005. Only 4,200 octopus figures were onboard the now-infamous cargo ship, and very few of them have been recovered as of this writing.

LEGO Fortnite Is Getting a Classic Star Wars Item

One tiny plastic Cephalopod was recently uncovered on a beach in Marazion, England by a young boy named Liutauras Cemolonskas earlier this month, as reported by The Guardian . He found the rare black LEGO octopus during a regular fishing trip with his parents, though his father told the PA Media news agency that they had been looking for the figure for the past two years. According to him, Liutauras was happy to find the rare LEGO octopus after such a long search, having already collected 789 other pieces alongside a few fossils.

LEGO Octopus Figure Is Rarest Collectible From Late 90s Shipping Incident

The lost octopus figure is just a small part of the vast assortment of LEGO pieces scattered by the late 90s shipping accident, which also included 352,000 pairs of flippers, 97,500 scuba tanks, and 92,400 swords. The story would inspire beachcomber Tracey Williams to start the LEGO Lost at Sea project, which has been dedicated to locating the hidden LEGO pieces. Williams herself discovered an octopus figure way back in 1997, and then another one in 2015. She says that the octopuses are considered to be the “holy grail” of findings from the lost shipping container.

All of this makes Liutauras Cemolonskas’s discovery of a rare LEGO mini-figure during a seemingly normal fishing trip with his parents all the more magical, especially after it had eluded the family for such a long time beforehand. Now that he has found one of the world’s rarest LEGO figures, Cemolonskas says that he wants to search for one of the 33,941 dragon pieces that also went missing during that fateful storm in 1997.

LEGO is a type of toy that predominantly consists of small plastic bricks. LEGO is the world's largest toy company by revenue, likely due to how versatile the product is and how it appeals to both children and adults. LEGO isn't just a toy company, however, as there are numerous LEGO video games, films, and even theme parks.

Star Trek Just Pulled Off a Huge Call Back to a Beloved Enterprise Character

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 digs deep into The Original Series lore in an episode full of references to "The Paradise Syndrome."

Star Trek Enterprise Cast

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

Although Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is focused on a season-long quest for ancient secrets from before the dawn of history, there have also been a few episodes that have been almost standalone in structure. From the time loop in “Face the Strange” to the return of the ISS Enterprise in “Mirrors,” Discovery ’s final seasons has episodic stories, woven into the bigger arc. And, out of all of season 5, episode 6, “Whistlespeak,” is probably the most standalone of the bunch.

In order to retrieve the latest clue to the Progenitor tech, the USS Discovery jumps to the planet Halem’no, a pre-warp planet. Here, Burnham and Tilly have to go undercover to not only find the clue, but also, repair some concealed technology. Along the way, Discovery pays homage to The Original Series , the prequel series Enterprise , and beyond. Here are the biggest Star Trek easter eggs and references in the episode…

Weather Towers

Throughout all of Star Trek , or at least the time of The Voyage Home , there’s been the strong suggestion that the weather on Earth, and other Federation planets, is controlled by low-key terraforming technology. In “Whistlespeak,” Burnham and Tilly have to fix a weather tower that is malfunctioning on a pre-warp, Prime Directive-protected planet. This exact mission hasn’t happened before, but it is reminiscent of several Trek episodes from the past…

Ad – content continues below

Going Undercover With an Indigenous Culture

The conceit that Burnham and Tilly have to blend in with a pre-warp civilization has several precedents in other Star Trek series and films. In The Original Series episodes “Pattern of Force,” “Return of the Archons,” “A Private Little War,” and “The Paradise Syndrome,” the crew has to infiltrate planets and pass themselves off as natives. Ditto The Next Generation episode “Who Watches the Watchers?” and the beginning of the feature film Insurrection . Burnham, Owo and Captain Pike also went undercover in a pre-warp civilization in the Discovery season 2 episode “New Eden.” Then, the entire Strange New Worlds gang, including Pike, Spock, and La’an all went undercover in the series premiere of that that show, also titled “Strange New Worlds.”

Finally, the very first glimpse of Michael Burnham ever happens near the start of the first Discovery episode from 2017, “The Vulcan Hello.” And in that episode, Captain Georgiou and Michael Burnham are helping save a pre-warp civilization from a drought without being detected. So, in Disco’s first season and its last, Burnham is on a very similar mission. At least once, anyway.

Subcutaneous Comms

Burnham and Tilly also rock both subcutaneous — under the skin — communicators, as well as tricorders embedded into their eyes. The retinal tricorders are new, but Kirk and Spock both had subcutaneous transponders put into their arms in the episode “Patterns of Force.”

The scientist who created the weather towers for the Halem’nites was named Hitoroshi Kreel, a Denobulan. Though we never see him on screen, we know, generally, some basic features of what Denobulans look like. The beloved character of Dr. Phlox in the series Enterprise was a Denobulan, and it was in that series that nearly all the lore of the planet Denobula was established, even though the planet was never seen on screen. Outside of Enterprise , we’ve seen Denobulans in Lower Decks , Prodigy , and briefly in Strange New Worlds Season 2. But, despite being mentioned in this Discovery episode, no Denobulans appear.

Burnham’s Job

While it’s easy to forget what Burnham trained to do for Starfleet, this episode reminds us of the fact that in season 1, it was established that in both Starfleet and at the Vulcan Science Academy, Burnham studied xenoanthropology. She’s actually perfect for away missions like this because of her anthropological background, unlike say, several other Starfleet captains who frequently would go on missions like this.

“We could really use you at”

Ever since season 4, Tilly has been teaching at Starfleet Academy, which, for now, is located somewhere at Federation HQ. Tilly telling Burnham she wants her to teach there too is interesting, and has some precedent in previous Star Trek lore. When Spock was teaching at Starfleet Academy, in The Wrath of Khan , he brought Kirk in to help out at the beginning of the movie. Because Tilly and Burnham are both from the 23rd Century initially, it’s not too nuts to think of them both teaching at Starfleet Academy at some point in the future, much like their classic-era colleagues across space and time.

Paradise Syndrome: Reloaded

Overall, the story of “Whistlespeak” feels like a modern update of tricky TOS episode, “The Paradise Syndrome.” In that episode, Kirk lost his memory, and became part of a tribe of Native Americans who lived on a planet that was not Earth. Progressive stuff for 1968 maybe , but less than great or thoughtful now. However, the sci-fi premise of “The Paradise Syndrome” was fantastic even if the politics were iffy: A device that was placed on the planet by an advanced alien race—designed to protect the people of the planet—malfunctions and gains religious significance. This is exactly what happens with the weather stations on Halem’no, and, just like Kirk and Spock had to go back into the obelisk in TOS to save the native population, Burnham and Tilly have to do the same thing in this Discovery episode.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Interestingly, this “Paradise Syndrome,” connection goes even deeper when you realize that “The Preservers,” mentioned in that episode, were the first indication that an advanced humanoid species seeded several planets with humanoid lifeforms. So, without “:The Paradise Syndrome,” you kinda don’t have the TNG episode “The Chase,” and without that, you certainly don’t have Discovery season 5’s epic search for the Progenitor tech, which goes all the way back to 1993, or 1968, or millions of years in the past, depending on your point of view.

Netflix Has Resolved Your 3 Biggest Wednesday Concerns Heading Into Season 2

The big bang theory's 3rd spinoff must avoid the most harmful problem of young sheldon's premise, what was up with dr. ye’s weird einstein joke in 3 body problem.

For six seasons, J. J. Abrams' Lost captivated audiences with its intense mysteries and subtle sci-fi aspects, and since the series' initial release, other television shows have tried hard to recreate that iconic magic. On the surface, Lost follows a group of people who endure a plane crash that lands them on a lush and strange island. More than that, the show includes shocking secrets, twists, and mysteries that grip audiences from start to finish.

When Lost first premiered on ABC in 2004, a new wave of science fiction and mystery shows began to follow in its footsteps. These series all tried to evoke the same ambiance that Lost had, either by replicating the concept of people stuck in a remote place or including an atmosphere that is far more sinister and paranormal than it seems. Even after Lost concluded in 2010, these shows have cropped up often, joining the running for being "the new Lost. " Some of them have even been created by Lost's visionary himself, J. J. Abrams.

10 Flashforward

Airing in the last year of Lost's television reign, Flashforward is the forerunner of Lost's many copycats. Based on Robert J. Sawyer's 1999 novel of the same name, the series centers around a world in which, on October 6, 2009, everyone loses consciousness for two minutes and sixteen seconds. During that time, most of the population experience visions of their lives on April 29, 2010. Therefore, they have a "flashforward" into the future. Along with its sci-fi concept, Flashforward often used time jumps, which was a major plot device on Lost. Ultimately, the series failed after one season due to declining ratings.

While many Lost followers only lasted for one season, The 4400 maintained a fairly impressive run from 2004 to 2007. The CW series follows 4400 people as they are carried by a ball of light into the Cascade Range foothills. Along with this strange anomaly, these people all disappeared in 1946 or after, haven't aged since then, and have no idea what happened. Combining mysterious extraterrestrial activity and a group of dislocated people banding together, this series definitely has strong parallels with Lost. Although it received positive ratings from critics and audiences, The 4400 ended on a cliffhanger due to a writer's strike, declining ratings, and budgetary issues.

After Lost came to an end, J. J. Abrams and other Lost alum returned to television with an eerily similar series that, unfortunately, didn't have the same success. Alcatraz tells the story of the real Alcatraz prison which shut down due to unsafe conditions in 1963. However, in the present day, the prison's guards and prisoners are reappearing in San Francisco, and are being tracked by the FBI. Although this series had strong themes of time travel, the Lost creators behind it, and Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley in Lost, as the lead, it was still canceled after one season.

Coming a few years after Lost's finale, The 100 has undeniable ties to the ABC series through its themes and general plot. The 100, loosely based on a young adult book series of the same name, follows a spaceship called The Ark that returns to Earth with 100 people on it after a nuclear apocalypse forced them to leave nearly a century before. Like in Lost, this group must work together to unlock the secrets of their new surroundings, and as per usual, the setting is not exactly as it seems. The 100 ended after season 7 and garnered an impressive fanbase during that time.

6 The Event

Like many series inspired by Lost, The Event begins with a plane crash that sets an array of major mysteries into motion. In 2010's The Event, a group of extraterrestrials crash-lands on Earth and 66 years later, some are being held by the U.S. government while others have assimilated into society. While this series had the makings of a Lost- type hit, with flashbacks and endless questions to be answered, ratings declined by half by the end of the first season, and it was promptly canceled.

With ties to Lost and a close connection to Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Invasion could have been a serious hit if given more time. The 2005 series centers on a hurricane that causes water-based life forms to invade a small Florida town, taking over the bodies of its citizens. Despite having high ratings, the series suffered from its hurricane plotline due to the recent tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. With only one season, Invasion's ratings tanked, pushing it to be canceled. Of the many canceled series on this list, Invasion is one that had great potential in its time and perhaps even could have been "the new Lost. "

A more recent iteration of Lost that is still going strong is Netflix's Manifest. The show tells the story of a plane that reappears after five and half years with all of its passengers still alive and seemingly unchanged. Not only does this series have the classic Lost plane element to it, but it also introduces supernatural elements that increase the mystery of their situation. Despite being canceled by NBC after three seasons, Netflix picked Manifest up for a fourth and final season to tie up the series' major cliffhanger. The Manifest season 4, part 2 ending aired in 2023.

3 Revolution

Yet another series with Lost's J.J. Abrams attached is NBC's Revolution. The drama follows the world in 2027, fifteen years after "The Blackout," which permanently cut all electricity, internet, and transportation. While the series doesn't have the same plot as Lost, its inclusion of Abrams, Lost alum Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet, and its time jump plot device makes it a similar type of series. Although Revolution received good enough ratings to merit a second season, it was eventually canceled as well in 2014.

2 Westworld

While Westworld may have been pinned as "the new Lost, " the series definitely morphed into something vastly different, though still enjoyable. HBO's Westworld is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name and centers on a wild west-themed amusement park filled with robots that start to become sentient, and consequently, unhappy with their lives. Although Westworld has a much different ambiance from Lost, the series are still connected by their sci-fi roots and focus on groups of people uncovering mysteries. Westworld currently has four seasons and, as for now, Westworld season 5 isn't happening .

1 The Society

Mixing Lost with "Lord of the Flies," this mystery series had the potential to go far if not for the COVID-19 pandemic. The Society is about a group of teenagers who must band together after the rest of their town goes missing, and the outside world mysteriously can't be reached. Once again, this series brings in the concept of people working together against a larger mystery and a sometimes creepy natural setting. Although The Society was set for a second season, the pandemic, unfortunately, cut the series short.

Ultimately, the greatness and success of Lost spurred on a variety of sci-fi series that were expected to be "the new Lost. " While some succeeded and others were brought to an end, all of them include the iconic themes and plots of Lost within them. In this way, the ABC series continues on within its genre, even after its end, and clearly, it still holds a place in the hearts of its audiences and creators. Therefore, there is still a chance that, someday, the new Lost will come.
