The Sheepdogs announce U.S. tour
Over the course of a full music industry shutdown, there was one thing, and only one, that saved Saskatchewan-based band The Sheepdogs; straight-up, non-bummer, pandemic-induced rock and roll. In a few days’ time, the band will take every bit of that energy captured on their latest album, Outta Sight , to venues across the country—from Vermont to California and back. The hard-working and hard-living Canadian band present cool, vintage rock and roll without pretension. It’s urgent, rhythmic, clear, and fun. It’s a break from slick production and gazing at your navel, and proclaims the joy and jubilation of drums, bass, horns, and electric guitar.
The Sheepdogs make tunes that make you nod your head. The artistry, however, beneath the stadium riffs—the harmonies, the multiple guitar parts, the groove behind a rhythm section that hangs out together when they’re not on the clock—is battle-honed and spit-shined between vans, garages, thousands of soundchecks, and, yes, headlining shows.
The first of The Sheepdogs’ U.S. headlining tour is on September 20th at Burlington, Vermont’s legendary Higher Ground. The road dogs will be throughout the Northeast, Southeast, Texas, and the Midwest in October and November before starting their westerly jaunt in Seattle on December 3rd. A full list of tour dates can be found below or at thesheepdogs.com.
In October, their live album Live at Lee’s will be available in vinyl for the tour.

The Sheepdogs - The Garage, London- 19/06/19
I first saw these guys when they supported Rival Sons earlier this year. They were certainly not going to go unnoticed on that occasion as they were all dressed as fairly camp cowboys. I was certainly impressed enough to catch a full set from them upon their return to London.
They all hail from Saskatoon, Canada but you could be forgiven for assuming they were born and bred in the southern states of the USA. Ewan Currie is a formidable front man on vocals and guitar, whilst Ewan is calm and controlled, Jimmy Bowskill counters this and gives the impression he is fighting with his guitar. Ryan Gullen is an extremely animated bass man and is a blur for much of the gig behind his lengthly locks with his partner in crime, Sam Corbett complimenting him well on on Drums. Shamus Currie, Ewan’s brother, completes the line up on Keyboards, trombone and guitar.
The band was welcomed to the stage, no flamboyant costumes this time around, and they settle straight into a Black Crowes style riff for the opener ‘Who?’, and this sets the tone for the next 105 minutes. This is followed by the up tempo sad song ‘I’ve Got A Hole Where My Heart Should Be’. The tempo lowers ever so slightly for ‘Bad Lieutenant’ from the ‘Future Nostalgia’ album before ‘Downtown’ from the same album takes us back to nostalgic Height Asbury in the early 70s. ‘Right On’ has a ‘Mr. Big’ bass line running through it and Ewan Currie’s vocal manages to blend homage to The Doors, Steppenwolf, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even the Beatles. ‘Southern Dreaming’ on the other hand is laid back and could well have been written by the Allman Brothers.
‘Cool Down’ is a great band number with Shamus Currie’s soulful keyboards throughout, his brother Ewan duelling with the impressive Jimmy Bowskill on guitar and the bass and drums of Ryan Gullen and Sam Corbett respectively bouncing off each other. This was one of those numbers you never tire of hearing and would be happy were it to continue ad-infinitum but instead segues into the instrumental ‘Kiss The Brass Ring’. Sounds a bit rude but in the absence of a lyric who knows?
Three songs about their Canadian homeland, ’The Bailieboro Turnaround’, ‘Up In Canada’ and ‘H.M.S. Buffalo’ slowed things down a notch before ramping things up again for ’I’m Gonna Be Myself’. A pedal steel guitar was brought on stage and Jimmy Bowskill sat behind it and the band gave us the very country sound of ‘Let It Roll’. The pedal steel had Jimmy’s moniker etched into it so no mistaking who was going to take his position behind it. Another new instrument was introduced to the proceedings when Ewan and Shamus switched positions with Ewan on keyboard duty whilst Shamus showed he could certainly multi task and picked up the trombone for ‘I Ain’t Cool’ and ’Help Us All’.
This band has obviously had a similar education to many of us old hippies and unashamedly draws on the early seventies southern rock influences for much of its self penned material and no more so than ‘How Late, How Long’ and ‘Feeling Good’. ’I Don’t Know’ brings the main set to a close but there is no way these guys were going to be allowed to leave the building without indulging the very appreciative audience with an encore or two. ‘Nobody’ from their latest 2018 release ‘Changing Colours’, was a popular choice. The official video of this release is well worth checking out on YouTube as it is a take on The Blues Brothers playing the seedy joint behind a wire mesh. No need for protection on this night as the entire audience was in tune with the band and they followed this and brought this excellent gig to a close with what they referred to as a homage song, ‘Ramblin’ Man’, if you closed your eyes you were transported back to the Fillmore East in 1971, it really was that good.
The Sheepdogs only played one cover all night and although they may not yet be on everyone’s radar they are worthy of serious attention as they have the ability to take you back to the 70s with the many references to that golden era throughout their set.

Monday 5th November, the Borderline, London, the Sheepdogs. It’s the second time this year for me seeing these Canadian country rockers. There is little more that I can add to my review of them earlier this year in the Lexington found here rocking-wolves-in-sheeps-clothing. The suits were different but just as shiny, the music was just the same and just as good and the venue was just as packed.
These musical magpies that wear their influences on their sleeves picking the best bits from the great seventies country and rock acts have found the perfect blend and coupled with their superb musicianship, four and sometimes five part harmonies deliver a tour de force of feel good music.
Thanks you Sheepdogs for another great time and until the next time keep on southern fried country rockin y’all
Excellent performance.Every band member is so talented. Their original music rockin, They captivated the audience which was a packed house. I will continue to follow this Sheepdogs and catch another show next time they come to Denver.

The Sheepdogs Embark On Extensive North American Tour
The Sheepdogs – Photo By Mat Dunlap
50+ Date Tour Includes Stops At Toronto’s Massey Hall, Montreal’s MTelus, Woodstock’s Legendary Levon Helm Studios, and 2 Shows At Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom
Canada’s beloved rockers The Sheepdogs are set to embark on a 50+ date North American tour, including performances at Toronto’s Massey Hall, Montreal’s MTelus, and two back-to-back shows at Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom.
The extensive tour will also hit major U.S. markets, including NY’s Bowery Ballroom and a special sold-out show at the legendary Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. To commemorate, the band will be releasing exclusive vinyl of their stunning live LP, Live At Lees – recorded across four sold-out shows at Lee’s Palace in Toronto in December 2021 – offstage and online in October.
Joining the band on stage is Quebec’s reigning blues and rock guitarist Ricky Paquette who will be filling in for Jimmy Bowskill on the tour. The Gatineau prodigy signed his first record deal at only 12 years old and has shared stages with notable Canadian and international artists as well as performed for Canadian troops in Afghanistan.
Says Paquette, “I am super excited to be joining The Sheepdogs for their fall tour. Hitting the road with them will definitely bring me right back to my rock and roll roots. I love their tunes and can’t wait to be a part of the trip, doing my best to honour the fine work these guys have shared with the world since their inception.”
“Je suis très heureux de me joindre au band ‘The Sheepdogs’ pour la tournée de l’automne! Prendre la route avec un band que j’adore va définitivement me ramener directement aux sources et à mes racines de rock and roll! J’adore leurs chansons et j’ai vraiment hâte de faire partit de cette belle aventure tout en donnant le meilleur de moi meme à tout les soirs.”
The Sheepdogs recently released their new studio album, Outta Sight , to international acclaim and have notably had a single continuously in the Top 20 for 62 weeks since May 2021: “Keep On Loving You” and “Rock and Roll (Ain’t No Simple Thing)” from the band’s 2021 EP No Simple Thing , and “Find The Truth” from their latest effort Outta Sight . Earlier this month, the band released an Apple Music Home Session available here: apple.co/3QEs9uw .
The quintessential quintet enjoyed an incredibly successful European tour earlier this year, bringing people together in a celebration of rock & roll and good times with their signature ‘guitarmonies’ and killer live shows. The tour included performances in Scandinavia, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and France, where the band’s popularity has been soaring with French audiences.
The tour wrapped up with a packed show in Paris that ended in with the audience jubilantly chanting the guitar riff for their song ‘Nobody’ at them as if they were cheering on their favourite soccer team. Watch a short snippet here . The band will return to the UK for a handful of shows before heading back to Canada. All told, The Sheepdogs will spend 2022 in the space where they were born to be – on stage, performing almost one hundred shows to thousands of ebullient fans. See below for upcoming tour dates, and check the band’s website for ticket information.

The Sheepdogs launch magnificent live video of new single Scarborough Street Fight
New fan favourite Scarborough Street Fight comes from upcoming Sheepdogs album Outta Sight - out next month
Canadian retro-rockers The Sheepdogs have released a stunning live performance video of their new single, Scarborough Street Fight . The video is available exclusively via Classic Rock 's Facebook page .
The Video was shot over four nights at Lee's Palace in Toronto," say the band. "We shot the song each night on 16mm film and cut it together to the live version audio.
"The four nights at Lee's Palace was the first weekend that Covid restrictions were lifted in Toronto to allow indoor shows. It was great to capture the energy in the room both on audio but also video. Was also amazing to capture this unreleased song and the energy in the room when we played it for people for the first time.
"The best thing about this environment is we really fed off the crowd and jammed out on this one to really make it its own. This has really already become a fan favourite live, and is just now being released, which is something that we haven't been able to do for many years. Can't wait to get back on the road and see how it will evolve!"
The studio version of Scarborough Street Fight features on The Sheepdogs' upcoming Outta Sight album, which is released on June 3 and available to pre-order now .

In February The Sheepdogs released a live album, Live At Lees , compiled from the four November shows. It's available via streaming platforms now.
"There is a palpable energy and excitement to these performances that really jumps out the speakers," proclaimed the band. "They were our first full-capacity indoor shows in Canada’s biggest city in more than two years and you can practically hear the grins on our faces."

Rescue ‘Miles’ Steals Hearts at Westminster Dog Show 2024
By Namrata Padhee
A rescue from Pennsylvania stole the spotlight at the Westminster Dog Show 2024. Miles impressed everyone with his journey from being an “unadoptable” shelter dog to becoming one of the best agility contestants in the United States.
‘Unadoptable’ rescue wins hearts at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show 2024
Miles’ journey towards becoming a top agility dog started when Christine Longnecker adopted him. On the day the horseback riding teacher decided to bring along her new rescue to one of her classes, she was in for a surprise. Miles was more than happy to sprint into the rings and jump over the fences.

Longnecker adopted Miles about six years ago. He was deemed “unadoptable” when she first met him due to constant snarling and growling. The dog was very uninviting to others, but the horseback riding teacher felt for him. In an interview with The New York Times , she noted, “…he looked me straight in the eye and said, clear as day, ‘I just want to be a good boy’…My heart broke into a million pieces.”
After seeing Miles’ enthusiasm for the sport, Longnecker enrolled him in a class at Countryside Agility. The rescue dog didn’t just participate in the Westminster Dog Show 2024 but has also participated in American Kennel Club agility nationals. Moreover, he has consistently finished at the top in the All-American category. He didn’t make it to the Westminster Masters Agility Championship finals but won everyone’s hearts.
‘Nimble’ makes history as first to take home both Masters Agility Champion and All-American Champion titles
This year, Nimble took home the title of the overall Masters Agility Champion, per Fox Sports . Furthermore, she made history by becoming the first mixed breed to be given the award at the Westminster Dog Show. Unlike most dog shows, the Westminster Masters Agility Championship allows non-purebreds to compete. However, since 2013, purebred pups have taken home the title of the overall champion year after year.
Nimble took only 28.76 seconds to run the obstacle course. Moreover, she was the first in the 12″ jump class to win the champion title. She is only the fifth pup to finish the obstacle course within 30 seconds. Furthermore, Nimble’s time was the third fastest in the Westminster Masters Agility Championship history.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
