Family says PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray died by suicide

  • ESPN News Services

The parents of professional golfer Grayson Murray on Sunday said the two-time PGA Tour winner died by suicide Saturday morning.

"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone," Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement. "It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare.

"... Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

Grayson Murray, 30, withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial after the 16th hole of Friday's second round in Fort Worth, Texas. The PGA Tour cited the reason as illness.

"We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents said in their statement. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and -- it seems -- by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else."

Many players competing at Colonial on Sunday wore black-and-red pins on their caps in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes , his favorite NHL team.

"Obviously it was pretty difficult to come play golf," said Scottie Scheffler , who tied for second at Colonial. "But like his parents said, he would have wanted the tournament to continue."

Murray spoke about alcohol and mental health in the past, saying he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and believed he was invincible. He made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," Murray said in January. "That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

He also won the Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie in 2017.

Murray, who was No. 58 in the world ranking, was coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.

His first coach was Ted Kiegiel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.

"Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment," Kiegiel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. "Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us."

Murray wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State.

Murray said when he won the Sony Open in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married and believed his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the PGA Tour's 16-member player advisory council the same month.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, who flew to Texas on Saturday, said grief counselors were on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event.

"To be in the locker room, to see the devastation on the faces of every player that's coming in, it's really difficult to see. And really just profound," Monahan said during the CBS broadcast Saturday.

"Grayson was a remarkable player on the PGA Tour, but he was a very courageous man, as well. And I've always loved that about him, and I know that the locker room is filled with people that really will take that away when they think about Grayson."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Grayson Murray dies at age 30 a day after withdrawing from Colonial, PGA Tour says

Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, died Saturday just one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, the PGA Tour announced in a statement.

Murray was 30 years old.

There were no immediate details released regarding manner or circumstances of his death.

Grayson Murray.

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in the statement.

“The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same,” Monahan continued. “We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Murray’s management company, GSE Worldwide, also confirmed his death and said it was heartbroken.

“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but out heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” GSE said in a statement.

Monahan said he spoke to Murray’s parents to offer condolences. During that conversation, he said, Murray’s parents “asked that we continue with tournament play.”

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” Monahan said. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

During Saturday's television coverage of the tournament at Colonial Country Club, pro golfer Webb Simpson said he had known Murray since the latter was 8 years old.

"I knew he was going to be a great player from day one," Simpson said.

Simpson said a young Murray took the title at Simpson's inaugural Webb Simpson Challenge, an annual tournament held in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

The pair shared that history but also a swing coach who tuned their marksmanship, Simpson said.

"It was a huge shock," Simpson said upon hearing the news of Murray's death. "I just hate it."

Monahan, en route to Forth Worth, said in the PGA Tour statement that grief counselors will be available at this week’s PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events.

Colonial Country Club said in a statement Saturday that Murray was a talent “loved by many.”

“The golf community is small,” the venue said. “When one hurts, we all feel it tremendously.”

Murray first hit the golf scene at age 16, and finished off his rookie season in the pros with a win at the Nationwide Children’s, earning him second place on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and full status on the PGA Tour in 2017.

He won the Barbasol Championship in 2017 at the age of 24, securing a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA Tour season.

After struggling on the PGA Tour the next few seasons, Murray found success yet again on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023, picking up wins at the AdventHealth Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville, Tennessee. He finished fourth on the tour and earned a spot back on the tour for the next season.

Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, the Tour confirmed.

Murray withdrew Friday late in his second round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

There were no immediate details on the circumstances surrounding his death. (Update: The family released a statement Sunday morning related to Murray’s death.)

In a memo to the membership that was released Saturday afternoon, commissioner Jay Monahan wrote: “I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. There is nothing we can do but mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Monahan said that, after a conversation with Murray’s parents, tournament play at Colonial would continue.

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” said Monahan, who flew to Texas to meet with players. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

2024 PGA Championship - Round One

Murray won the Sony Open in a playoff earlier this year, ending a six-year winless drought during which he’d struggled both mentally and physically.

Murray, who was profiled in this in-depth piece by Golf Channel in 2017, had been open about his battles with anxiety and depression. He said in January that he sought treatment in the past few years for alcohol abuse but had been sober for several months.

“Grayson was the absolute best,” his caddie, Jay Green, told GolfChannel.com via text message. “Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend. He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply.”

Following his victory at Waialae, Murray spoke optimistically about his future, saying that he had rediscovered his faith and was engaged to be married to Christiana Ritchie, whom he met in 2021.

“I wouldn’t trade anything,” Murray said at the time. “I have a beautiful fiancée. I have beautiful parents. I have beautiful nephews, siblings. Everyone in my life right now who is close to me, who has been through the struggles with me, it’s all a team effort. I think this is just the start of something really special.”

Growing up, Murray was one of the best prospects in the country, winning the prestigious Junior Worlds three times and becoming, at age 16, then the second-youngest to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour. Though he bounced around in college, Murray made an immediate impact once he landed on the PGA Tour, claiming the 2017 Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old rookie.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year but also feeling like I was invincible,” Murray said in January. He said he often drank to excess while at tournaments while battling his personal demons.

Murray, who spent time on the PGA and Korn Ferry tours over the last five years, regained his PGA Tour status this year after winning twice on the secondary circuit in 2023 and believed he was better equipped to handle the challenges of Tour life.

“It took me a long time to get to this point,” he said. “That was over seven years ago. I’m a different man now.”

Ranked 58th in the world, Murray had made the cut in the first two majors of the year, including last week at the PGA Championship, where he tied for 43 rd . He was exempt into next month’s U.S. Open.

“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details,” said his management company, GSE, in a statement, “but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time.”

2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational live stream, watch online, TV schedule, tee times, radio, golf coverage

Players travel to orlando for the last signature event before the masters.

arnold-palmer-invitational-signage-g.jpg

The 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational marks the second of three player invitationals and the fourth of eight signature events on the PGA Tour schedule. Not only does this tournament hold those designations, but it is also a part of the Open Qualifying Series, meaning a spot in the field for the 152nd Open at Royal Troon will be up for grabs.

Those who need not worry about qualifying about the last major championship of the season include world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Making his first start in Florida this week at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, he aims to keep a good thing going at the king's palace. A winner in 2022, Scheffler came close to successfully defending his title a year ago when Kurt Kitayama emerged from a star-studded leaderboard that included the likes of Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth.

McIlroy is in the field again amid a busy stretch of play for the Ulsterman. Ramping up his preparations for the Masters, McIlroy is driving the golf ball as well as ever but has failed to avoid the big numbers in his first few starts of the 2024 PGA Tour season. If he is the one who plans to stop this streak of longshot winners, McIlroy will need to keep the ball in play around this dangerous par 72.

In total, 14 of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are set to tee it up, with Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick and Collin Moriakwa all enjoying past success around Bay Hill. Min Woo Lee grabbed a spot in the field thanks to his runner-up performance at the Cognizant Classic and jumped inside the Aon Swing 5 for what will be the last signature event until after the Masters.

Grayson Murray, two-time PGA Tour winner who lived in Jupiter, dead at 30 by suicide

PGA Tour pro Grayson Murray , who had moved to Jupiter with his fiancée, Christiana Ritchie, died by suicide Saturday, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, was 30. The PGA Tour posted a statement Sunday on X from the Murray family, indicating the golfer killed himself Saturday morning."We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

The PGA Tour considered postponing Sunday's final round at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled, saying it was what their son would have wanted.

More: Grayson Murray talked about his 'past challenges' when applying to Jupiter private golf club

Murray, who was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. He was a member of Dye Preserve Golf Club in Jupiter. He was one of eight members of the club who played May 16-19 in the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. He finished tied for 43rd at Valhalla.

The news of his death was met with shock and sadness around the golf world.

“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

In 2021, Murray called out the PGA Tour on social media, saying he hadn’t been given enough support through bouts with alcoholism and mental health challenges. In Murray's post, he did not blame the tour for his issues but said he never once had a request answered by the commissioner or the Player Advisory Council.

Monahan said Saturday he called Murray "right away" after the post.

“Over the last several years, I spent a lot of time with him because I wanted to understand what we could do in his estimation, in his opinion, to help everybody else out here," Monahan said after arriving at Colonial Country Club following the news.

"We’ve made a number of advancements along those lines and, you know, it’s become a real point of focus and emphasis. We’re proud of the programs we have in place to support our players, to support everybody out here."

PGA Tour players reach out on social media

Several players reached out to Murray after his post.

"Speechless to hear about Grayson," Tequesta's Justin Thomas posted Saturday. "Guy had been through so many ups and downs to get where he was. I hurt so much for his family and the people closest to him. My condolences and deepest sympathies."

Jupiter's Luke Donald wrote on social media he recently gave Murray advice on how to play Augusta National.

"Truly devastating news that Grayson Murray has passed away," he wrote. "He asked me for some advice on how to play Augusta a few months ago, last week I saw him at the PGA Championship, life truly is precious. My condolences and prayers to his whole family that they may find some peace."

Murray and Ritchie met in 2021 at the American Express tournament in Palm Springs, California. He proposed to her in December 2023 at a country club in Nashville. “Easiest decision of my life," he wrote on his Instagram. "I love you so much, babe. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. God is so Great.”

They planned to get married in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Murray, ranked No. 58 in the world, played in the former Honda Classic at PGA National from 2017 to 2023. He did not play this year, the first as the renamed Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. In 2020, he made a hole-in-one at the 17th hole, part of the famed Bear Trap. He used a pitching wedge on the 151-yard hole.

At the time, it was a fourth career ace for Murray.

Canadian Open | Day Four highlights

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre recovered from a shaky start and held off a host of challengers to win his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open.

MacIntyre carded a two-under final round of 68 at Hamilton Golf and Country Club to finish 16 under par, a shot ahead of Ben Griffin.

Griffin had piled on the pressure with birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th to close within one of his playing partner, but could not find a fourth in a row on the last to potentially force a play-off.

Victor Perez finished one stroke further back, while Rory McIlroy and Tom Kim tied for fourth at 13 under. McIlroy, who started the day seven off the lead, pulled to within two at one point after a run of three straight birdies through the sixth hole.

MacIntyre and dad share emotional moment after first PGA Tour victory

Asked why he was so emotional at the win, MacIntyre gestured to his dad as he told CBS : "Because of this.

"I'm speechless, to be honest. This is just everything for me and family, my girlfriend, my team. I can't believe I've done it with him on the bag.

MacIntyre had seen his four-shot overnight lead wiped out in the space of four holes after he bogeyed the first and home favourite Mackenzie Hughes made a hat-trick of early birdies.

However, MacIntyre responded superbly to birdie the fourth, seventh and eighth to regain control of the event, despite having to ask for a drone being used for the television coverage to be moved on several occasions before he finally got his wish.

Another birdie on the 11th was followed by a wild tee shot on the 12th into a water hazard and another bogey on the 13th opened the door for the chasing pack, but the Ryder Cup star crucially birdied the 15th and safely parred the last three holes.

MacIntyre has made no secret of his struggle to adapt to living in the United States this season, but benefited hugely from a three-week spell back in Scotland in April and contended for the Myrtle Beach Classic before finishing eighth in the US PGA Championship.

'I am a grass cutter, not a caddie'- MacIntryre duo reflect on emotional win

There were visibly emotional scenes following the Scotsman's win, with his father tearing up at the experience they had shared together as his son powered through tough times on his rookie PGA Tour year to a huge victory.

Indeed, on the Monday morning before the tournament, Robert MacIntyre had to work hard to get his dad into the venue because he didn't have any credentials, epitomising the incredible week they had as MacIntyre's father's caddie fee looks set to make his parents mortgage free.

"Unbelievable. Yeah. I'm a grass cutter, not a caddie, Sorry. Honestly, it's unbelievable," MacIntyre's father said.

"I got phoned, last Saturday night you phoned me? I'm sitting on the couch at home 8 o'clock Saturday night and I'm like, 'Can I leave my job? I was busy at work.

"Of course you can."

"Aye. 8 o'clock the next morning I'm on a flight out here and ... wow."

MacIntyre reflected on the sacrifices his parents and sisters have made for him to achieve his dream and also how having foster brothers and sisters growing up shaped him as a person.

"I think it makes you realise that hitting a white ball around a golf course isn't the most important thing," MacIntyre said after his win.

"I mean, I've been in tears over it, kids going away from you. They become family. They have been in a tough spot. I wasn't given everything as a kid. I was given a great opportunity.

"My dad was obviously a really good sportsman, football, golf, shinty, didn't have the finances to really chase it, and I think it was something that my mum and dad always wanted to do.

"I've got two older sisters who are right into their horses, horse riding and stuff, but they even sacrificed quite a lot of that just to give me a chance.

"I mean, I couldn't play in golf tournaments as a junior because we couldn't afford it. I think that made me, that makes me fight and never give up, I think not being given anything.

"I mean, they gave me quite a bit. They gave me the opportunity, but never, never was I spoon-fed, I was always fighting for every bit of it."
