The sky and rocky edge reflects in the still water in the early morning at Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, November 2017 Oklahoma

Sometimes you just need to get away from home for a few days and relax. Visiting somewhere new, even if it’s closely, is invigorating. A quick trip can bring families closer together, create friends for life, and provide the perfect way to blow off some steam.

And you don’t have to go far to enjoy one! The best weekend getaways in Oklahoma don’t require much planning. Just pack a bag, make an online reservation, and hit the road!

Here are my favorite Oklahoma weekend trips, from great city escapes to fabulous lake trips to charming small towns.

Best Weekend Getaways in Oklahoma

Oklahoma Cities for Weekend Getaways

While we may not have cities the size of NYC or LA, Oklahoma’s cities are perfect for exploring on a weekend away since you can cover some of the best sites in three days!

Oklahoma City

Tower Theater Neon Lights in Oklahoma City.

For Oklahomans that live outside of the OKC metro, a weekend getaway to Oklahoma City is probably the first idea that comes to mind. But I think it’s a great idea even for people who live close by! You don’t have to go far from your home to feel like you’re on vacation!

Try to create a theme for your OKC getaway. A sports weekend could include an OKC Thunder game and enjoying Bricktown’s nightlife. A shopping weekend could include the city’s best boutiques and even picking up a few kitschy Oklahoma souvenirs.

You can even have a quirky getaway and spend it entirely in one unique neighborhood like the Paseo. Or a cultural getaway with trips to Oklahoma City Museum of Art and an evening at Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park or a show at Lyric Theater.

The possibilities are endless! Just put together three or four activities on the same theme and pick out a hotel that’s located nearby so you can enjoy the city without doing much driving.

USA - Oklahoma - Back lawn of Philbrook Museum in Tulsa Oklahoma

Tulsa is a great place for an Oklahoma weekend escape for anyone who doesn’t live in Northeastern Oklahoma.

You can enjoy major cultural institutions like special exhibits at the Philbrook and aHHA or performances at the Tulsa Opera. I mean, you won’t even feel like you’re in Oklahoma when you’re wandering the Italianate Philbrook.

Tulsa is also a great shopping destination! You can even visit the original showroom of Rustic Cuff while you’re there. They make for fabulous gifts !

Oklahoma - Norman - Clock tower at student Union building on University of Oklahoma campus

If you’re an OU Sooners fan, why not put together a fabulous sports weekend? Enjoy a football or basketball game and then soak in the great university town vibes at Norman’s bookstores, cinema, and restaurants.

If you’re an alum, you can visit your old haunts, but if you’re just a fan you can discover some new places.

There’s nothing quite like a great college town to reinvigorate you!

Oklahoma - Stillwater - Photo by Kate Storm

Obviously, I’m not going to suggest an OSU Cowboys fan head to Norman. Instead you can run the same play with an OSU-centric sports weekend. (Pun intended).

Lakes and Nature Getaways in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s natural beauty isn’t well-known outside of the state. A lot of Oklahomans don’t even know the full breadth of what you can see and do outdoors here! Each of these amazing natural wonders would make a great Oklahoma weekend trip!

Wichita Mountains

The sky and rocky edge reflects in the still water in the early morning at Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, November 2017 Oklahoma

The Wichita Mountains have so many beautiful hidden corners! You can visit the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge and see the hearts of bison and longhorns, you can go rock climbing, or you can visit the quirky Holy City of the Wichitas, a true Oklahoma hidden gem!

You can go camping or you can get a nearby hotel and relax in a cozy bed after you’ve been out hiking or driving.

Lake Murray

Oklahoma - Aerial view of Tucker Tower on Lake Murray in Ardmore Oklahoma on a summer day with a houseboat in the distance

I have so many fun memories of family vacations at Lake Murray growing up! This is one of the best places to go swimming in the state if you’re looking for a great Oklahoma beach.

There are also horse stables, ten miles of trails, opportunities for mountain biking, and the newly-opened Tucker Tower.

Little Sahara

Sand dunes in Little Sahara SP, Waynoka, OKLAHOMA

If you want to have an action packed weekend trip in Oklahoma, head to Little Sahara! Here you can rent ATVs and 4x4s and enjoy some adrenaline-boosting adventures on the sand dunes.

Turner Falls

Oklahoma - Beautiful Turner Falls on a bright sunny day. Turner Falls is one of the two Oklahoma’s tallest waterfalls.

I’ve been to sixty-seven countries and territories, and Turner Falls’s beauty is world-class. There are lots of pretty waterfalls in the world, but not as many where you can actually enjoy swimming right in the water underneath them!

Beavers Bend

The tranquil Mountain Fork River flowing at the Beavers Bend State Park in Broken Bow, Oklahoma with colorful leaves on the trees on a beautiful autumn day.

Beavers Bend is a great place to go if you want to get some water adventures under your belt. This is a great spot for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and bird watching.

Great Salt Plains

Oklahoma - USA - The boy collects salt crystals in salt-saturated water. Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma, US

In the Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, you can play in salt leftover from an ocean that covered Oklahoma in prehistoric times. If you go swimming, the saltwater lake in the park, Great Salt Plains Lake, is about half as salty as the ocean.

You can dig out salt crystals in the digging areas from April through October. Check with the park for specific opening and closing dates.

A rare aurora display over Black Mesa, Oklahoma, USA.

Stargazers will want to plan a getaway to Black Mesa State Park. This park, located in the Panhandle on the border of Colorado and New Mexico, is one of the best places in the country to get dark skies at night. This means that if you want to try your hand at astrophotography, you’re in luck!

The Gloss Mountains

Bluff in the Glass Mountains State Park in NW Oklahoma

While not technically mountains, the Gloss Mountains are gorgeous buttes and mesas that are sometimes referred to as the Glass Mountains because of their salty sheen.

The hike up Cathedral Mountain is one of the most famous (and the most beautiful) in the state. You can camp or stay nearby the park and rest your tired feet at the end of the day.

Oklahoma - sunset grand lake grove oklahoma

If you want to get out on the water, Grand Lake is a great place to rent a boat, go parasailing, or go wakeboarding. This lake in Oklahoma’s portion of the Ozarks’ foothills is closer than going to Missouri or Arkansas, but just as beautiful!

Best Small Towns Weekend Getaways in Oklahoma

If you want to enjoy a few days of small-town charm, these are great weekend escapes!

Medicine Park

USA - Oklahoma - Medicine Park - Colroful Houses

Oklahoma’s first resort town is a great place to enjoy the Wichita Mountains from, but it also is a beautiful town to explore for a weekend away on its own, complete with spas and great cuisine!

Oklahoma - Downtown Guthrie

Oklahoma’s first capital has a charming old-school downtown, a lively theater scene, and untouched corners to explore. You can enjoy a trolley tour, visit a drugstore museum, and explore what is set to become the nation’s largest Historic Preservation District.

Two American bison face each other within the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Pawhuska, Oklahoma

Yes, you should enjoy the Pioneer Woman’s Mercantile shop and restaurant, but there’s a lot to do in Pawhuska once you’re done, including digging into Native American history at the Osage Nation Museum.

USA - Oklahoma - Ponca City - The Poncan Theatre

Ponca City is a little corner of Oklahoma history. You can enjoy a tour of the Italian-inspired Marland Mansion and enjoy an evening strolling the town’s center and take in a show at the historic Poncan Theatre.

USA - Oklahoma - Buffalo Springs at the head of Travertine Creek in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

A town of spa hotels and bison viewing spots, Sulphur offers a best-of-both-worlds for anyone who wants to have fancy evenings while exploring the outdoors during the day since it’s the door to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area which is one of the only areas of Oklahoma protected by the National Parks Service.

Oklahoma - Illinois River in Tahlequah Oklahoma

Talequah is a great small town to visit to learn about the history of the Cherokee in Oklahoma. The town is the capital of Cherokee Nation, and it was named on of the Top 100 Best Small Towns in America.

You can visit the historic town center and see Cherokee and English street signs, visit the Cherokee Heritage Center, and visit the reproduction of an ancient Cherokee Village called Tsa-La-Gi.

All modern Oklahomans live on Native land, and anything we can do to learn about what this means makes for a great Oklahoma weekend away!

Horse and Buggy on Highway in Oklahoma Amish Country

Did you know that you can actually visit Oklahoma Amish Country? You don’t need to head all the way to Pennsylvania for this kind of experience. It’s right in your own backyard!

The town of Choteau is where most of the Amish-owned businesses in Oklahoma are centered. You can visit Amish restaurants and stores, and you can even buy some of their homemade baked goods to take home with you.

Oklahoma Weekend Trips on Route 66

USA - Oklahoma - Arcadia - Route 66 Famous Round Barn in Arcadia, OK - Built in 1910

Instead of picking a destination, why not just explore Oklahoma’s portion of Route 66? You can start at the nearest point to you and do Oklahoma’s portion in a loop. You can even add in Kansas’s thirteen miles of the route for good measure!

Highlights include the Catoosa Whale, the Arcadia Round Barn , and Lucille’s Diner, but there are so many great spots to explore. Many Route 66 enthusiasts believe that Oklahoma’s portion is the best for kitschy roadside attractions!

The River's Edge Cottages are a prime example of remote cabin lodging surrounded by 300 acres of privately owned woods. You can plan romantic hikes on the trails or canoeing on the lakes during the day and end the evening with a bonfire around the fire pit.

There are other cabins in the area and other public lands to explore, but Watson is far away from other towns. About an hour away in this southeastern region is Broken Bow , where you can find some additional lodging like the New Hochatown Lodge and private cabins. Broken Bow Lake has great fishing, and it is one of the largest lakes in the state.

The natural scenery around the lake is a quiet place for couples to enjoy an evening sunset. Planning your cabin getaway in this area also places you close to Beech Creek National Scenic and Botanical Area , which has 32 miles of trails and is great for a scenic drive.

Longhorn cattle near the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan

A fun weekend getaway for the family is easy to do in Duncan , where Oklahoma's western heritage thrives. The city is in south-central Oklahoma, about 1.5 hours from Oklahoma City .

Duncan made its place on the map from the historic Chisholm Trail, which became an important route between Texas and Kansas for the cattle trade. The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center is a great first stop for families to learn about the cowboys and the cattle that made a name for Duncan in the 1800s.

Another stop for families is the Stephens County Historical Museum . The free museum showcases everything, from old farm equipment and a replica log cabin to artwork and photographs. The museum is engaging for kids, and gives families an authentic experience with the culture of the Old West.

Oklahoma City

A weekend in Oklahoma City will feel more like a mini vacation than a few days away. If you have never been to Oklahoma City then you will want to include the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum on your itinerary. The peaceful exhibits share the stories and impact of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Another great museum to visit is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , which has interactive exhibits focusing on the state's Native American heritage and influence of cowboys.

Spend some time in the Paseo Arts District to experience the modern flare of Oklahoma City. You will find many edgy eateries and galleries that are great for an evening out in the city. If this is a return trip to OKC, you may want to spend more of your weekend enjoying the many parks and green spaces in the city.

Myriad Botanical Gardens and the Oklahoma City Zoo are two of the top places to visit in Oklahoma City . Hefner Lake and Park is nice if you want to take a hike or get on the water with a kayak. There are many hotels in Oklahoma City to suit your budget and location, whether you want a base in downtown or closer to the airport.

Route 66 in Tulsa, Oklahoma

The famous Route 66 runs through Oklahoma, so traveling along part of it makes for a fun weekend trip. Leave the schedule flexible to spend more time in the places that you stumble upon and want to explore more. Stop in the towns along the way to meet locals who share stories about Route 66 in its heyday.

You can either plot the trip loosely, with lodging and stops as you go, or you can stay in Oklahoma City or Tulsa and hop on Route 66 out of those cities for day trips.

Route 66, also called The Mother Road in Oklahoma, takes you through many small towns where you will find iconic neon-lit diners, wall murals, and historic hotels, many of which have been renovated. Book a stay at one of them, like The Campbell Hotel in Tulsa for a themed weekend immersed in the sights along this famous American highway.

If you stay in Tulsa, be sure to stop at the Route 66 Plaza, which has sculptures and commemorative plaques commemorating the still-popular historic route. There are also several museums dedicated to Route 66 located along the route through Oklahoma.

The Round Barn in Arcadia

While Oklahoma has plenty of historic and natural experiences suitable for a weekend, if you are up for a little more adventure and seeking out the unusual sites of the state then head to Arcadia .

The town of Arcadia is located in the center of the state and along Route 66 near Oklahoma City. One of the top things to seek out in Arcadia during your weekend is the Instagram-worthy architectural marvel of the Round Barn . Standing here since 1898, the circular barn is the only one of its kind in the United States.

Drive around the backroads of Arcadia to explore Oklahoma's countryside. Bring a cooler for the produce you can buy fresh from farm markets, or spend the afternoon picking organic berries at Crestview Farms . This is a fun weekend for couples and families.

Your other must-stop location on your Arcadia weekend itinerary is Pops country store, which serves 600 flavors of soda. Snap a photo in front of the 66-foot-tall soda bottle out front.

Downtown Tulsa and the Arkansas River

Tulsa is a nice getaway that can easily fill an extended weekend. Start your mornings with a nice walk at the Gathering Place , the spectacular 100-acre public park in the center of the city. It is suitable for every kind of traveler, from families and couples to those traveling solo and looking for outdoor recreation. The park has playground equipment, restaurants, walking and biking trails, and boat rentals for recreation on the water.

Fill your Tulsa itinerary with some of the top picks in the city for one day, like the Philbrook Museum of Art , the Tulsa Zoo , and the Gilcrease Museum . Plan another day to just casually explore the city to uncover the Woody Guthrie Center , the unusual Cave House , and walking around the artsy Blue Dome District . Spend one of your evenings enjoying top entertainment at the BOK Center downtown.

Be sure to find your way to the Center of the Universe in downtown Tulsa, where you can shout while standing inside the small cement circle and say you have experienced its odd and famous echoing phenomenon.

Turner Falls

If you are looking for a great camping weekend then Turner Falls , Oklahoma's largest waterfall, is one of the best getaways in the state.

Located near Davis , Oklahoma, Turner Falls is a 77-foot-high waterfall, with natural swimming areas surrounding it. This is a perfect weekend getaway for outdoor enthusiasts and families. Besides the main attraction, the massive Turner Falls waterfall, there are caves and other natural areas to explore.

You can fish for stocked trout and spend part of your time on the hiking trails making for a full outdoor weekend. The stocked streams in the park are especially popular in the winter.

The park around the falls has cabins, camping sites, and an RV park. It is best to book those and the tickets for Turner Falls ahead of time to guarantee your spot. If you have time, make your way south to Lake Murray , which is also a nice outdoor recreation area.

Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge

If the mountains are what inspire you, then the expansive views and winding roads of Oklahoma's Wichita Mountains are worthy of a weekend away. Head into the mountains from Indiahoma , in the southwest part of the state, where you can just drive and enjoy the scenic views.

It is easy to find cabin lodging in the region, which makes for a breathtaking getaway in the natural environment.

You are also close to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge , where you can spend another day enjoying the outdoors. Take advantage of 15 miles of hiking trails through the mountains and grass prairies. Keep an eye out for the American buffalo that are roaming in this 8,500-acre wilderness.

The Price Tower in Bartlesville

Bartlesville is probably best known for the Price Tower, the only skyscraper designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and it is a great place to plan an architect-lovers weekend. The city is located just north of Tulsa in northeast Oklahoma.

The Price Tower is a 221-foot-tall building with an iconic Frank Lloyd Wright design that is great for photographing. You can book a room at the Inn at Price Tower during your stay and enjoy the art gallery and restaurant on-site.

While this is the most known piece of architecture in Bartlesville, the city has loads of other historic architecture to appreciate. You can take a guided heritage walking tour in town to see the other notable architecture in Bartlesville or simply explore on your own.

While you're in town, spend an afternoon at the Woolaroc Wildlife Preserve , where you will see buffalo and other wildlife, as well as a nice museum.

Golf weekend in Broken Arrow

Golf enthusiasts looking for courses to hit over a long weekend should head to Broken Arrow in northeastern Oklahoma. You can make a full weekend at one of the nine golf courses in Broken Arrow or stay in the city and try a different course each day.

There are another 19 golf courses within a 20-mile range of Broken Arrow. There are also a number of spas in Broken Arrow so couples can plan a romantic getaway that encompasses both types of activities.

After a full day hitting the links, you can wind down in the historic downtown area with fine or casual dining. Stroll around the area to enjoy some of its history, including the train depot and the Military History Center . As for lodging, there are several golf resorts in Broken Arrow, as well as vacation rentals.

Antiques for sale

There are some great places to visit for antiquing in Oklahoma, but if you want to make a full weekend out of treasure hunting then Jenks is where you want to stay.

The small town is located in northeast Oklahoma, and it has a nice concentration of antique stores that can fill your car and your weekend. Unofficially, Jenks is considered the antique capital of Oklahoma .

Start your treasure hunting on Main Street in town, where the antique stores make up much of the downtown area. Many of these antique shops have been business staples in Jenks for more than 30 years. In addition to small stores there are antique malls with hundreds of consignment stalls. One of the biggest is the River City Trading Post , which has more than 300 booths with antiques for sale.

Beavers Bend State Park

There are many state parks in Oklahoma where you can plan a nature weekend getaway, but Beavers Bend State Park is one of the best. The park is located near Broken Bow in southeastern Oklahoma. The park can fill your outdoor weekend with hiking, fishing, golf, river trips, horseback riding, and relaxing in a hammock in the outdoors.

Beavers Bend is a great location for this type of getaway because of the large number and variety of lodging options in the area. You can go as rustic as basic camping and RV parking to booking a cabin or even a nearby resort for more luxury accommodations.

If you are looking for a cheap weekend getaway in Oklahoma, planning your retreat to Beavers Bend State Park is one way to save a great deal of money, as there are often nice deals for lodging in the area.

Ranch in Oklahoma

Few things are more inspiring than becoming a cowboy or cowgirl for a few days at a dude ranch in Oklahoma. Turn back the clock more than a century, and dive into the roots of the Old West by learning the ropes, literally, at one of the many guest ranches throughout the state.

Sample what is it like to take part in a cattle drive or tend to your horse during a trail ride. You will participate in real ranching activities and, of course, end the long day with a hearty western meal.

The Meadow Lake Ranch in Sand Springs is an all-inclusive ranch that lets guests learn how to do tomahawk throwing, take horsemanship, or try fishing and horseback riding, then rest easy at night in a quiet cabin.

The Lazy S Ranch in Frederick has thousands of acres for enjoying the outdoors and western ranch life. Spend the weekend feeding cattle, walking through the woods, or just kicking back at the guesthouse to enjoy the scenery.

Oklahoma has a wide variety of ranches that allow guests to be as hands-on or relaxed as the weekend calls for. Some ranches are just outside of Tulsa if you want to stay there and make this part of a longer vacation, and there are others located in more remote and scenic locations for a private getaway.

8 Weekend Getaways in Oklahoma from Urban Adventures to Peaceful Countryside

Typically, I’m averse to heart-pounding adventure, but suddenly I’ve got my hands clenched around an oar as I twist and turn down a whirling river rapid. My vision is temporarily blurred by a crashing wave, but after wiping the water from my eyes, I look up to see the sun reflecting off the Devon Tower, Oklahoma City’s 50-foot skyscraper.

I’m at Riversport OKC, a man-made adventure oasis located in the city’s Boathouse District, located along the Oklahoma River and just minutes from downtown. The park is known for its adventure course marked by an 80-foot structure complete with six different levels of obstacles that become notably more difficult the more you climb. By the end of the day, I’m on my way to becoming a certified adrenaline junkie—and this is all located just a 10-minute bike ride from my apartment in midtown Oklahoma City.

When most people think of the Sooner State, cowboys, tumbleweeds, and a certain musical come to mind. But Oklahoma offers so much more than that, from urban adventure to peaceful countrysides, a weekend getaway in Oklahoma is always worth taking.

Bartlesville

Sometimes a weekend trip centers around where you’re going to stay, and in the case of Bartlesville, you’re going to want to stay at the Inn at Price Tower. The 19-story building is the only skyscraper ever realized by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Not just a hotel, the Price Tower is also an arts center with a mission of inspiring local artists and all those who visit the building. You can take a 60-minute tour of the landmark, which includes a visit to the restored 19th floor of the building.

After your tour, grab lunch at the Copper Restaurant and Bar on the 15th floor for sweeping views of Bartlesville. As if the views weren’t amazing enough, the restaurant does even more to cement itself as one of the most unique dining spots in Oklahoma. This past year, Price Tower started its Wright Chef Competition where culinary artists competed to become head chef of Copper along with free room and board for one year. Chef Jimmy Sanabria-Cardec was the first winner, and you can taste his award-winning dishes in the restaurant anytime.

While it’ll be hard to peel yourself away from the Price Tower, there’s plenty more to discover in the Bartlesville area. Frank Lloyd Wright wasn’t the only notable architect to make his mark in Bartlesville. A short drive from Price Tower is the palatial La Quinta Foster Mansion, designed by Kansas City architect Edward Buehler Delk. Now home to Oklahoma Wesleyan University, you can still view hand-painted ceilings and stained glass details during a self-guided tour.

While you’re in town, it’s a must to take a quick half hour drive to Pawhuska to the Pioneer Woman Mercantile. Ree Drummond, the mastermind behind The Pioneer Woman brand and popular Food Network TV show, created The Mercantile to share her famous comfort food and coffee with visitors far and wide. “The Merc” is located in a century-old Osage Mercantile building on Pawhuska’s Main Street offering a culinary wonderland of tasty treats and kitchen gadgets. Guests to “The Merc” can also take a free tour of The Lodge where her show is filmed.

As mentioned above, the Inn at Price Tower is a must when visiting Bartlesville. Take in the art, the views, and the art deco furnishings first-hand from your private hotel room.

Driving into the Broken Bow area, you might feel like you’re in another state. This combination of pine forest and peaceful lakes in Southeast Oklahoma is a nature lover’s dream. Broken Bow is home to Beavers Bend State Park and Hochatown State Park. Keep going slightly Northeast of Hochatown and you’ll hit the entrance of the massive Ouachita National Forest, which sprawls across both Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Although Oklahoma has a reputation for being flat, the Broken Bow area is the exception to the rule. Located at the base of the Kiamichi Mountains, Beavers Bend is a beautiful destination for hiking or fly fishing. While in the area, you’re likely to spot black bears or the occasional bald eagle. Located nearby, Broken Bow Lake is great for fishing as well as canoeing. This Oklahoma lake is known for its clear, deep blue water making it a popular area for local scuba divers, or those looking to get scuba certified.

In nearby Hochatown, tap into your adventurous side with a ziplining tour with Rugaru Adventures to get a bird’s eye view of Broken Bow. Animal lovers won’t be able to resist Hochatown Petting Zoo for family-friendly playtime with adorable animals. The petting zoo is also a certified rehabilitation center, helping prepare wounded or abandoned animals to reenter the wild.

All of this outdoor fun will quickly work up an appetite. Beavers Bend Restaurant and Country Store is a great stop for a meal with a view. Smith Good Eats is the go-to for delicious Southern cooking. Don’t leave without ordering a slice of pie or some banana pudding.

Broken Bow is also a popular option for a girls’ getaway. Gather up your favorite ladies for a trip to Girls Gone Wine, a fun local winery and gift shop. Wine tastings are complimentary, but you’ll want to take buy a glass to sip on the patio afterward as you catch up with friends.

Chickasaw national recreation area / ardmore.

The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is one of Oklahoma’s oldest national park destinations. This peaceful location is home to natural mineral water streams, waterfalls, and lakes. Although a fun destination year-round, Chickasaw is a lovely place to take a refreshing dip during Oklahoma’s hot summer months. Hike to Little Niagra Falls and then take a dip in the cool waters below. Nearby, Turner Falls Park features Oklahoma’s largest waterfall and the ruins of the Collings Castle.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is one of the most kid-friendly vacation spots in Oklahoma. In addition to the falls, there’s Arbuckle Wilderness Park with over 200 acres of land where hundreds of exotic animals roam free. Take a family safari in your own car as you drive through the park and encounter these beautiful creatures up close and personally. Visitors to the park can also enjoy the House of Reptiles Petting Zoo, bumper boats, hay rides, and more family fun.

Driving through the area, you’ll see dozens of signs for Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies. Follow those signs! An Arbuckle Mountain fried pie with a hot cup of coffee is a right of passage for anyone passing through the area. Be sure to pick up extras to share.

For more dining options, drive a half hour south to Ardmore. Two Frogs is always fun for dinner with delicious options from fried mushrooms to crawfish fettuccine alfredo.

Growing up in Oklahoma, learning about the Land Run of 1889 was a big part of my grade school education. We even simulated our own Land Run in 4th grade, a competitive event amongst my peers where we set out to stake our own plot of land the way settlers did in The Unassigned Lands that currently comprise Central Oklahoma.

Following the Land Run, Guthrie’s population boomed overnight and would eventually become the first capital of Oklahoma. Needless to say, this town is steeped in Oklahoma History. Visit the Oklahoma Territorial Museum for a complete history of the Land Run and how Oklahoma became the great state it is today.

But Guthrie isn’t all about the past. The city is putting a lot of effort into revitalizing its historic downtown. Jump on the First Capital Trolley for a tour of downtown, stopping off to shop and eat as you please.

Speaking of eating, Katie’s Diner serves up classic stick-to-your-ribs diner food like fluffy pancakes and fried okra, a true Oklahoma staple. For a memorable dinner with great service, head to Gages Steakhouse for tender steaks in an elegant atmosphere. Coffee lovers should try both Hoboken Coffee Roasters and Rick’s Fine Chocolates & Coffee. Need something a little stronger? Check out Roosters Hard Times Club for a cocktail. Keep your eye out for any drinks made with Prairie Wolf Spirits, a new distillery located right in Guthrie.

Still looking for more to do? If there’s a rodeo in town, it’s mandatory to head to the Lazy E Arena for an action-packed night of entertainment.

Lake texoma / durant.

No Oklahoma weekend getaway guide would be complete without a lake excursion. One of my favorites is Lake Texoma, which as the name suggests, shares a border with our neighbor to the south, Texas. Lake Texoma is one of the largest reservoirs in the U.S. and is known as the Striper Fish Capital of the World because it’s one of the only places in the country where striped bass reproduce naturally.

A weekend at Texoma is as versatile as the lake is big. From a rugged adventure getaway to a luxurious spa weekend, there’s something for every traveler. When it’s hot, there’s no place I’d rather be than right on the water. Don’t have a boat? No problem! Take a sunset dinner cruise, a guided fishing excursion, or rent your own pontoon for the day or weekend. In the spring and fall, Texoma offers tree-shaded hiking trails in Lake Texoma State Park.

If you do happen to snag a boat, motor on over to Anchor N Restaurant for a delicious breakfast or some tasty barbecue. By land, Villegas Panaderia and Mexican Restaurant is a local gem in nearby Durant.

Treat yourself to a luxurious stay at the Choctaw Casino Resort . Whether or not you choose to gamble, there’s an oasis awaiting at this expansive property. Book treatments at the onsite spa, relax at the Oasis pool or just rest up on a pillow-top mattress with plush bedding. Hungry? Grab a bite at one of the resort’s 13 eateries. If you have a little luck and win some extra cash, there’s plenty of onsite shopping to peruse as well.

Lawton is an unexpected source of outdoor fun, history, and wildlife. Enjoy a slower pace of life in this charming Southeast Oklahoma town. Start out with a cheeseburger the size of your head at Meers Store & Restaurant. The Meersburger has been dubbed the “best burger in Oklahoma” and can easily feed four people. But there’s more to Meers than the food, you’ll get a full history lesson while you dine dating all the way back to the Gold Rush.

After lunch, head over to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge to see American Bison roam freely. The refuge was created in 1901 to protect animal species in danger of extinction. In addition to bison, you can spot elk, river otters, prairie dogs, and whitetail deer just to name a few. While you’re in the Wichita Mountains, work off that Meersburger by hiking to the top of Mount Scott for expansive views of the surrounding rocky prairie lands and blue-green Lake Lawtonka.

At the base of Mount Scott, you’ll find Medicine Park, a picturesque town known as “America’s Cobblestone Community.” Take a dip in Bath Lake or grab a meal at The Old Plantation Restaurant for another one of Oklahoma’s must-try dishes, the chicken fried steak.

The Fort Sill Army Base is located in Lawton, which continues its long history of training soldiers for the U.S. Army. They also have a museum, open to the public, where you can take an audio tour through the exhibits to learn the full history of the installation.

After you’ve had your fill of nature and history, head back into town and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the surprising number of murals gracing the walls of local businesses. You’ll find paintings of Willie Nelson, Jack Nicholson, and Superman in some pretty unexpected places. And don’t overlook the food scene in Lawton either. Try out Salas Urban Cantina for classic crispy beef tacos or stop by Junction for delicious Korean barbecue in an unassuming dive bar. There’s also Wayne’s Drive-In, a town institution, known for their fried pickles, chicken baskets, and fries.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Lawton

Where to stay in lawton.

The Hilton Garden Inn provides a comfortable home base for your adventures in Lawton. The central location enables easy access to the mountains as well as to attractions in town such as the Museum of the Great Plains.

Hilton Garden Inn Lawton-Fort Sill

Oklahoma city.

Over the past decade, Oklahoma City’s downtown area has been completely revitalized and is packed with trendy restaurants, concert venues, and a lively bar scene. Several old factories and warehouses that sat dormant for years are being renewed and reinvented as the city continues to establish itself.

Start your weekend with a local brew at one of OKC’s many craft breweries. Locals favor Stonecloud Brewing, located in an old laundry facility built in 1929. Grab dinner at arguably the coolest restaurant in town, The Jones Assembly. Here you can feast on wood-fired pizzas with seasonal toppings or try local favorites like fried okra or cornmeal-dusted catfish.

Adventure lovers can’t miss Riversport OKC’s wet and wild whitewater rafting, heart-pumping zip lining, and high-speed slides. You’ll also want to check out the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (MOA) and the expansive Myriad Gardens downtown. Both offer fun activities for kids and parents alike, from splash pads and playgrounds at the gardens to interactive arts and crafts at the MOA.

Walk along Automobile Alley, where former car dealerships have been transformed into an exciting strip of unique shops and restaurants. Plenty Mercantile will capture your imagination with unique gifts, such as hand-made jewelry and Oklahoma-themed apparel for everyone you know. Then head down the street for a pick-me-up at Coffee Slingers. If you get hungry, stop for a mouth-watering charcuterie plate or a succulent steak at Broadway 10, housed in the historic Buick building (be sure to look up to see the iconic sign). Pro tip: sit at the bar and get a complimentary bowl of bacon to snack on.

Start your next day with a full belly. Breakfast in Oklahoma City is a pretty big deal. Places like Neighborhood Jam and Cafe Kacao can boast hour-long wait times, but the food is well worth it. For something a little more casual, Waffle Champion and Hunny Bunny Biscuit Co. are delicious options. Looking for a sophisticated brunch? Kitchen 324 and Cheever’s have menus that will appeal to every appetite and classy cocktails to match.

Families will also want to visit the Oklahoma City Zoo, where you’ll find lions and tigers and bears and a soon-to-open Sanctuary Asia featuring amazing animals of the Asian continent. Right next to the zoo is the Science Museum, full of educational hands-on fun for everyone.

No trip to Oklahoma City is complete without a visit to the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. It’s a beautiful yet somber dedication to the lives lost in the Murrah Building Bombing on April 19, 1995. Runners should also add the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon to their race list when athletes from around the world run together to honor the victims of the bombing. The race begins at the Memorial and passes 168 banners placed throughout the course to pay homage to those who lost their lives in the bombing.

Lastly, don’t forget to add a little romance to your weekend in OKC. Head to the top floor of the Devon Tower for dinner with a view at Vast restaurant before taking a stroll through the Bricktown Canal, or even jumping in a water taxi for a more relaxing way to take in the city.

Speaking of historic buildings given new life, nowhere is this more evident than in the new 21c Museum Hotel in OKC’s historic Film Row. Staying at this museum doubling as a hotel is a trip in and of itself. There are free art exhibitions on the ground floor, which rotate regularly. You can do yoga among the art on Saturdays as well. The on-site restaurant, Mary Eddy’s Kitchen, is one of the best in town no matter what time of day you dine. The rooms are spacious and sleek, offering the perfect place to rest your head.

Growing up, a trip to Tulsa always felt like a fancy affair. There’s a sophisticated vibe to this metropolitan city northeast of OKC. Tulsa is my go-to destination for live music, art, and fine shopping. No matter when you choose to visit Tulsa, or what your musical taste, chances are there’s a killer lineup of shows at The Brady Theatre, Cain’s Ballroom, or the BOK Center. Fuel up for your night of tunes at Prairie Brewpub with local beer and a beautiful cheese plate, or maybe a short rib dish braised in Prairie’s own stout beer. A great post-show option is Tavern, an upscale neighborhood pub that serves up half-price burgers after nine at night.

Spend a leisurely morning grabbing a coffee at The Coffeehouse on Cherry Street before strolling through the neighborhood lined with quirky antique shops and art galleries. For more upscale shopping, head to Utica Square for luxury designer shops and cozy sidewalk cafes. You also can’t miss The Farm Shopping Center, a tree-lined open-air market complete with a Saturday farmer’s market during the warmer months.

Art lovers will have a jam-packed weekend with trips to the Gilcrease Museum, Philbrook Museum of Art, and Tulsa Art Deco Museum. When I was in grade school, a field trip to the Gilcrease was a special treat where we learned about the history of the American West through their massive collection of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. Afterward, the manicured gardens surrounding the museum make for an idyllic picnic lunch spot.

Tulsa is also home to the Oklahoma Aquarium, which features an adrenaline-pumping shark exhibit and an island of sea turtles. Thinking of visiting during the fall? One of Tulsa’s best events of the year is their Oktoberfest celebration featuring authentic German food and drink. The festival has been recognized as a top U.S. Oktoberfest by both USA Today and Conde Nast and will celebrate its 40th year in 2018.

Consider this your official invitation to experience the energy, excitement and welcoming spirit of Oklahoma City – a city open to all.

Whether you show up in cowboy boots or a business suit, there’s more common ground in Oklahoma City than you might think. Although it's hard to fully experience the city's rich culture in just one weekend, here are some recommendations for ways to spend 48 hours in the Modern Frontier  and make your trip exactly what you want it to be.

Where you choose to stay can set the tone for your whole trip. From quirkily designed luxury hotels to glamping under the stars, there’s a wide assortment of  unique lodging experiences and historic hotels  in OKC.

Located right off of the downtown park, the  Omni Hotel  is an elegant traditional hotel with contemporary comfort, well-appointed furnishings and beautiful Oklahoma-inspired décor. The Omni features multiple dining options, including a coffee shop, steakhouse, tap house and several posh places to have a cocktail. The hotel is just a few blocks from the  Bricktown Entertainment District  where you’ll find OKC’s nightlife hub.

If the  West Village District  is calling your name,  21c Museum Hotel  in Oklahoma City will welcome you with contemporary art and top-notch amenities. 21c occupies the historic Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant and is home to  Mary Eddy's  where you can enjoy new American cuisine favorites and craft cocktails to please all palates.

From 21c, the  First Americans Museum  is only a short drive away. The museum showcases state-of-the-art exhibitions in First American history, culture and art; live public and educational programs; a family discovery center with immersive family-friendly activities; a full-service restaurant presenting unique Native-inspired cuisine and a museum store featuring authentic one-of-a-kind hand-made items or products by premiere First American artists.

Individuals enjoying a multimedia exhibit inside of the First Americans Museum

The First Americans Museum puts you just a short drive (less than ten minutes) away from the  Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum . Through cutting-edge exhibits and interactive displays, the OKC Memorial Museum takes visitors on a journey from a day that began like any other, through chaos and confusion all the way to justice, healing and tough lessons learned through such trying times. Visit  this page  to reserve timed tickets to the museum. Access to the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial is always free and open all day.

From the Memorial, you can walk over to  Automobile Alley , just two blocks east, and spend the afternoon in one of our city’s original districts. Shop for souvenirs at  Plenty Mercantile ,  Shop Good  and  Tin Lizzies , then grab a snack or craft beverage at Eote Coffee ,  S&B's Burger Joint  or  Prairie OKC . As you explore the district, keep an eye out for a vibrant building with the giant boom box outside.  Factory Obscura's Mix-Tape  is OKC's first immersive art exhibit, and the outside of the building is one of the most  Instagramable spots  in the city, so it's worth the stop. Tip: press any button on the boombox and watch what happens next.

A couple sitting outside at Factory Obscura's Mix-Tape

For dinner, a trip to  Flint  is a must. The wine list is vast, and the patio is even better. Rated as one of the best restaurants in OKC by Trip Advisor, Flint offers contemporary American cuisine and takes a direct and simple approach to cooking by using the best available ingredients. Dressed casually for Spring? Don’t worry about it. You don't need a tie and cufflinks to dine at Flint! Although most people do come dressed upscale casual, they do not have a dress code. Dine in one of the cities original historic hotels and raise a toast to experiencing The Modern Frontier.

On day two, start with brunch at Cheever’s Café . This stylish Art Deco building once served as the Cheever family’s flower shop during Route 66’s heyday, but is now one of OKC’s most beloved restaurants. Cheever’s specializes in American cuisine with Southwest influences with a variety of sublime food options like their stuffed french toast, cowgirl benedict, roasted chicken enchiladas or masa vallo con huevos! Rounding out a trip to Cheever’s with one of their uniquely crafted brunch cocktails is a must.

Child feeding the Lorikeets at the Oklahoma City Zoo

Spend the afternoon exploring all that the Adventure District has to offer.  The district is home to many can’t-miss museums and attractions, such as the  Oklahoma City Zoo ,  USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium ,  Oklahoma Railway Museum , National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Science Museum Oklahoma and more. It's easy to find plenty of ways to entertain the whole family!

Escape to a green oasis in downtown OKC. The beautiful  Scissortail Park  features a wide variety of beautiful foliage, a music stage, a children’s playground with interactive features, a splash pad and a beautiful pond stocked with various fish, ducks, geese and plant life. The park grounds are always free for you to explore. If you're in the mood for a sweet treat, making a pitstop at Spark inside the park is an absolute must. After an evening stroll through the park, make sure to set some time to stop and experience one of OKC's show-stopping sunsets.

Friends enjoying the upstairs balcony at The Jones Assembly

Finish up the night with an unforgettable dining experience at The Jones Assembly . Featuring an impressively large, wide-open space with a retractable roof for nice weather, the Jones Assembly offers a novel atmosphere with two unique patio experiences, two bars, wood-fired pizzas, hand-crafted cocktails and a happening music scene. Located in the West Village District , there is something for everyone to enjoy. For after-dinner drinks, stop by Bar Arbolada , one of the Art Districts' favorite cocktail bars, featuring uniquely crafted cocktails and tasty bar bites.

Get ready to fall in love with all that OKC has to offer in just 48 hours or less!

6. Colcord Hotel

Colcord Hotel

At the Colcord Hotel in Oklahoma City, luxury is the gold standard. As they say themselves, “Hospitality never goes out of style,” and the staff at the Colcord is determined to give guests the best experience possible.

This destination has been serving lucky guests since 1910. At 12 stories high, the Colcord was the first skyscraper in Oklahoma City. And all the luxury of the original masterpiece has been preserved into present times: marble floors and columns in the main lobby, nickel and bronze elevators, and original ornamental plaster ceiling. In 1976, the Colcord joined the National Register of Historic Places.

Enjoy the stylish guest rooms, filled with top-of-the-line furnishings and amenities. Dine at the hotel’s restaurant, Flint, that showcases only the freshest ingredients with a menu that changes with the seasons.

8. Lago Vista Bed & Breakfast

Lago Vista Bed & Breakfast

Literally translating to “Lake View,” the Lago Vista offers Oklahoma vacationers a mountainside setting on the lake without all that cliché log-cabin décor. Instead, this B&B is adorned in Tuscan architecture. And to make it even more romantic than Tuscany, the Lago Vista is for adults only.

During the day, take in that fresh air and sunshine with kayaking, swimming, boating, scuba diving, and canoeing on the lake. 11. Meadowlake Ranch Bed & Breakfast

Meadowlake Ranch Bed & Breakfast

Meadowlake isn’t your average romantic weekend; here, you and your special someone can stay in a log cabin or an authentic Native American tipi!

Rest your head in the Beaver Lake Cabin or Paul’s Cabin, both a cozy slice of paradise with a lakeside patio, wrought iron patio furniture, hammocks, a wood-burning fireplace to roast marshmallows, and only six feet from the water.

For the more adventurous love birds, try staying in one of the Ranch’s tipis. These structures are actually made by the same company that made tipis for the iconic movie Dances with Wolves. Lodging in a tipi definitely takes austere campers, as it comes with “semi-comfortable” cots and not much else. But not to worry; each tipi includes its own private modern bathroom. And the best part: the tipis are situated near babbling waterfalls that will send you into pure relaxation.

48-Hour Itinerary

48 Hours in Oklahoma City: The Ultimate Itinerary

oklahoma trips weekend

It takes longer than just a weekend to fully immerse yourself in and appreciate everything the Modern Frontier has to offer, but 48 hours allows for a good introduction to Oklahoma City, one that will whet your appetite for future revisits. The capital of Oklahoma manages to unite its Old West character and American Indian heritage with contemporary amenities and attractions for a well-rounded adventure that’s packed with history, culture, fun, and food.

Day 1: Morning

10 a.m.: The Will Rogers World Airport serves the greater Oklahoma City metro region from its location about 10 miles southwest of downtown. Opened in 1911 and renamed in 1941, the facility sees plenty of air traffic with nonstops heading to and coming from points across the entire country. From here, it’s easy to grab a rental car or rideshare from designated airport pickup stations to get wherever you want to go in town. Downtown OKC offers a nice selection of reputable hotels including the Skirvin Hilton, the Colcord, a Sheraton, and an Embassy Suites, along with proximity to the Bricktown Entertainment District and the Arts District. Plus, you can always hop on the Oklahoma City Streetcar for quick, convenient navigation to Midtown and Automobile Alley via two looping routes.

11:30 a.m.: Fuel up with a taste of what’s to come during your Oklahoma City sojourn. Lunch options are available to accommodate pretty much any taste and craving. However, to experience a uniquely representative flavor of the city, head to the nicely revitalized Uptown 23rd area where the legendary Route 66 corridor crosses through town. Here you can take your pick of Southern comfort food at Cheever’s Café, a few Big Truck Tacos, some smoky Back Door BBQ, or an OKC original onion burger with all the fixings at Tucker’s. Just look for the Tower Theatre and the iconic Milk Bottle building and you’ll know you’ve arrived.

Day 1: Afternoon

1 p.m.: It’s been 25 years since the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing forever changed the landscape of downtown Oklahoma City, but for many locals, the painful memories of April 19, 1995, are still fresh and raw. The Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum educates visitors on the lasting impacts of domestic terrorism while honoring the heroes, survivors, first responders, and the 168 victims who lost their lives in this tragic event through respectful exhibits and informative displays. The Outdoor Symbolic Memorial now commands the spot where the federal building once stood, maintaining a reflecting pool, a peaceful overlook, the Field of Empty Chairs, the Gates of Time and other serene green spaces for quiet contemplation. It’s a fitting first stop for those who want to pay tribute and appreciate the true resilience of Oklahoma City residents.

4 p.m.: Venture south back into the City Center for a breath of fresh air and a little bit of communing with Mother Nature at the 15-acre Myriad Botanical Gardens, a verdant oasis in the heart of downtown OKC. Follow up a wander through the Crystal Bridge Conservatory’s tropical and desert-climate plantings with a restorative stroll around the outdoor grounds and gardens.

Day 1: Evening

6:30 p.m.: Beef rules local restaurant menus, attesting to the fact that Oklahoma is indeed prime cattle country. There are plenty of steakhouses here to choose from, but Cattlemen’s in Historic Stockyards City is the oldest and perhaps the most storied, serving up satisfying slabs of expertly prepared red meat to hungry ranchers and cowboys since 1910. The people-watching opportunities are as much of a draw as the food itself—an impressive clientele of movie stars, U.S. presidents, musicians, and athletes have passed through this hallowed dining room for meals through the years. Mickey Mantle’s in Bricktown is another solid choice for high-end steak and seafood, honoring the native OKC son and baseball great with walls of mementos from the legendary baller’s own family collection.

8:30 p.m.: When the sun goes down, the music heats up in the Deep Deuce neighborhood adjacent to Bricktown. The range of musical performances isn’t quite as diverse now as it was during the predominantly African-American district’s heyday as a jazz and blues hotspot back in the 1920s and 30s, but visitors can still find tunes (and smooth cocktails) flowing at venues like the Deep Deuce Grill and the STAG Whisky Bar and Cigar Lounge.

Day 2: Morning

8:30 a.m.: With a mouthwatering lineup of bakeries, donut shops, diners, and cafes to consider, Oklahoma City definitely doesn’t skimp on tasty options when it comes to the most important meal of the day. HunnyBunny loads up flaky biscuits with combinations of eggs, bacon, Nashville hot chicken, cheese, avocado, sausage gravy, and all sorts of other yumminess for breakfast sandwiches like you’ve never seen before. Or caffeinate for the day at a trendy local java spot like Elemental Coffee, Vintage Coffee, or Clarity Coffee.

10 a.m.: Tracing some of America’s deepest roots, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum offers an immersive look into Oklahoma’s indigenous cultures with permanent collections of classic and modern Western art, traveling exhibitions, annual events, and family-friendly programming. Across the multiple galleries, highlights include original works by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, handcrafted Native American artifacts, military paraphernalia, and Hollywood western memorabilia. Stockyards City is where you’ll find souvenirs like real-deal cowboy boots, hats, and western wear. If you time your visit just right, you might even get to enjoy an actual livestock auction at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, the largest feeder and stocker cattle market in the world.

Day 2: Afternoon

1:30 p.m.: A large community of Vietnamese immigrants chose to settle in Oklahoma City back in the 1970s, laying the foundations for what has over time evolved into OKC’s vibrant Asian District . Bring your appetite to sample some of the most authentic Asian cuisines you’ll find this side of the Pacific, particularly top-notch Vietnamese pho and fresh banh mi sandwiches. Pho Lien Hoa, VII Asian Bistro, and Pho Cuong all come highly recommended by the locals.

3 p.m.: Outdoorsy types can experience Oklahoma City’s great outdoors by renting kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats from the boathouse; signing up for an outdoor fitness class; or skating on the outdoor Sky Rink at downtown’s showy new Scissortail Park. If the weather’s not cooperating, perhaps a little indoor fine art appreciation is in order. As the city’s premiere arts venue, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art anchors the Arts District with three floors of spacious galleries, a sunny soaring atrium, the Samuel Roberts Noble Theater, a museum store and an on-site café. Prepare to be dazzled by the Dale Chihuly permanent collection, one of the world’s largest assemblages of the renowned glass artist’s output. Also notable are the Brett Weston photography holdings and works on display by Washington Color painter Paul Reed.

Day 2: Evening

6 p.m.: Treat yourself to a memorable meal from any one of OKC’s innovative upscale restaurants. For a romantic date-night dinner, Metro Wine Bar and Bistro delivers elegant Continental fare with an exquisite list of vino to wash it down. Flint in the Colcord Hotel welcomes guests with warm hospitality, beautiful plates of modern American cuisine, and a popular outdoor patio. At the 21c Museum Hotel sited within the old Ford Motor Company assembly plant, Mary Eddy’s Lounge restaurant transforms seasonal regionally sourced ingredients into works of art that rival anything you’ll see in the adjacent gallery.

8 p.m.: After dinner, of course, it’s time for a show. OKC’s performing arts offerings cover everything from opera and ballet to concerts, plays and touring Broadway productions. The Civic Center Music Hall and the Criterion host most of the biggest shindigs; for a more intimate experience, check local events calendars to find out what’s going on at the Plaza Theater or the Jewel Box for theater in the round.

10:30 p.m.: Keep the party rolling on into the wee hours by exploring the Bricktown Entertainment District’s buzzy bar scene, where you’ll find nightcap options galore. Raise a glass and sing along to the dueling pianos at Michael Murphy’s, or if you’re feeling more energetic, dance the night away at Club One15 or the Dollhouse Lounge.

Day 3: Morning

9 a.m.: Start the day off right with a leisurely morning repast. Hatch Early Mood Food sets the tone for a chill day with a.m.-appropriate cocktails, poutine, waffles, and pancakes and Benedicts “flights” for customers who just can’t make up their minds. Meanwhile, Café Kacao in the Asian District gives brunch a Latin twist with fresh tostadas; omelets stuffed with carne asada, chorizo and beans; pupusas; huevos rancheros; and traditional Guatemalan breakfast plates.

11 a.m.: If you’re traveling with kiddos (or even if you’re not), the Oklahoma City Zoo appeals to visitors of all ages with opportunities to observe animals across a variety of habitats. Take a walk on the even wilder side by signing up for flamingo, elephant, or giraffe feedings and up-close encounters with grizzly bears, rhinos, Galapagos tortoises, and sea lions. Or cap off your OKC adventure with a farewell stroll through the Paseo Arts District, where you can embark on a DIY walk to admire the colorful murals and street art between popping in and out of galleries and boutiques set within an enclave of handsome Spanish Revival-style architecture.

What is close to Tulsa?

Smaller Oklahoma towns like Jenks, Catoosa, and Muskogee are all close to Tulsa. You’re also within a short drive of Tahlequah, the capital of Cherokee Nation, and Oklahoma City, a vibrant city that probably deserves a full weekend away.

How far is Tulsa from the mountains?

Tulsa is about two hours and 20 minutes from the mountains if you want to visit the Ozarks. Bentonville and Fayetteville, two Arkansas towns, are a great base for exploration in the area.

You’ll have to add another hour to check out the Ouachita Mountain Range and its imposing terrain.

I’ll get into all of that and more with this guide to Tulsa day trips. Everything you see here will be listed by travel time so that you can explore with max efficiency. That said, always check those map apps before you hit the road to account for traffic, weather delays, and whatever else may go down on these roads.

My Top Day Trips from Tulsa

The day trips in Oklahoma from Tulsa that I get into below are all battle-tested by us, for better or worse. They’re not in any order of importance but listed by approximate drive time and mileage. You’ll find that it’s easy to combine a few into a longer day trip or spend a few hours in each destination vs. a full day.

If you want to see all of these on a map, I’ve got you. Just follow the link below:

GIMME MY EASY ROAD TRIPS FROM TULSA MAP!

If you really only have time for one, it’d be between Tahlequah and Oklahoma City for me!

1. Jenks, Oklahoma

Distance:  12 miles Drive Time:  15 minutes

A view inside a honey shop in Jenks on day trips from Tulsa

Jenks is a charming Oklahoma town just 15 minutes from Tulsa. If you’re looking for day trips from Tulsa with kids, this is a great easy option. Start at the Oklahoma Aquarium and visit its over 8,000 water inhabitants.

This is one of the largest indoor aquariums in the region, so expect to spend a few hours here. There are over 100 unique exhibits, including an underwater tunnel with sharks swimming overhead.

From there, you can go antiquing or take a stroll around the Riverwalk Jenks. I keep wanting to call it the Jenks Riverwalk, but alas. They do what they want here. It’s the town’s hub for dining, shopping, and entertainment, and a great people-watching destination.

In the mood for unique gifts ? Roark Acres Honey Farms is a great place to start and support a locally-owned business. They make the expected all-natural honey but also all kinds of honey items you didn’t know you needed. I’m talking beeswax lotion, honey straws, and honey soaps.

2. Catoosa, Oklahoma

Distance:  16 miles Drive Time:  20 minutes

A man stands on top of a blue whale on day trips from Tulsa.

Our primary objective in Catoosa was the Blue Whale of Catoosa, and this thing did not disappoint. This is one of the most popular destinations along Route 66 , especially if you’re driving the Mother Road through Oklahoma.

It’s a literal big blue whale, people. At one point, it was a local swimming hole open for public use. The original owners expanded it with an attached reptile kingdom and shops for sales of what I imagine were tchotchkes and treats.

The attraction closed by 1988 when the owners aged out of the upkeep. Revitalization efforts in modern times have focused on giving the whale a fresh paint job and adding some picnic tables for lingering in the warmer months.

You can visit and climb around inside without incident, but we stayed out of the very top level. It was pretty sketchy (and dirty as heck!) up there.

3. Yale, Oklahoma

Distance:  43 miles Drive Time:  45 minutes

The Jim Thorpe House in Yale on day trips from Tulsa

Our visit to Yale was admittedly quick, but that’s only because we thought we could stop at the Jim Thorpe House on our way back to Tulsa from Oklahoma City. Despite clearly posted signage about hours of operation on the front door and signage leading up to the house, no one was there.

So I called the posted number. “Well, I’m going to be honest with you. I’m in the tub,” the guide on the phone told me.

She offered to return in a half hour when she was done with her soak, but we didn’t really want to stick around. The point of this story is that the house seemed like a really intriguing thing to do. If you’re at all into Thorpe’s legacy, I’d recommend calling ahead just in case, especially if you’re visiting in the winter as we were.

4. Chelsea, Oklahoma

Distance:  50 miles Drive Time:  50 minutes

oklahoma trips weekend

A quick trip of under an hour will get you to Chelsea and Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park. As we visited in the off-season, we weren’t able to see inside his Fiddle House, a literal collection of fiddles, but the totems were still impressive.

Galloway was a retired teacher and semi-retired artist who used the last few years of his life to build these giant totem poles with his art students. It’s not exactly on Route 66, but it’s close enough that it doesn’t feel like an aggressive detour if you’re already traveling the Mother Road.

5. Muskogee, Oklahoma

Distance:  50 miles Drive Time:  55 minutes

An imposing building in Muskogee on day trips from Tulsa

If you start early enough, you could add a trip to Muskogee on the way to Tahlequah, but there’s enough in the historic town to warrant its own Tulsa day trip.

Muskogee is home to the Five Civilized Tribes Museum , which tells the story of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee Creek, and Seminole tribes. Spend some time here learning about what the region is doing to preserve the history and culture of our tribal nations.

From there, explore Honor Heights Park, over 130 acres of lovely floral displays. If you’re here in the spring, treat yourself to their annual Azalea Festival. If festivals are right up your alley, Muskogee also hosts the annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival .

Friends, if you’ve never been to a Renaissance Faire, do yourself a solid and add it to your bucket list.

6. Chandler, Oklahoma

Distance:  64 miles Drive Time:  1 hour

A woman sits on top of a bed inside a Route 66 museum on day trips from Tulsa.

What is there to do between Tulsa and OKC? Chandler, Oklahoma, is one of the quirkiest things to do between Tulsa and OKC.

This odd little town was our pick as a meeting point when we didn’t want to drive all the way to Oklahoma City to meet up with Brian’s cousin, a grad student up there.

It’s home to the Route 66 Interpretive Center , a modest museum that kicks things off with required viewing of one of the strangest home movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a retelling of a man’s adventures on a Route 66 road trip back in the day, and you really just had to be there.

From there, you can visit the Museum of Pioneer History, which resembles an antique shop or maybe an old lady’s attic. There’s no real coherent thread here, but we did have some fun reading old documents detailing rules for teaching in the 1900s.

Example: No loitering in ice cream shops.

What was going on in these ice cream shops?!?

If you love all of that Route 66 history, you can also visit an old Phillips 66 filling station that is under the process of renovation and the last remaining Meramec Cavern barn sign in the state.

Destinations is a kitschy diner for when all of that makes you hungry. The food was fine, but we did have a weird little moment when the waitress lost Brian’s credit card for about 10 minutes. It was in between the dirty plates. Crisis averted.

7. Sparks, Oklahoma

Distance:  70 miles Drive Time:  1 hour 5 minutes

The outside of a vineyard in Sparks on day trips from Tulsa

This tiny town in Lincoln County is home to the very fun and super casual Sparks Vineyard & Winery . This one is an easy add-on to the end of your day in the riveting town of Chandler.

Is the wine very good? No, not really. It’s super sweet and reminded me of some of the high-sugar cherry wines in Door County, Wisconsin. If that does it for you, this place may result in some impulse buys for home.

My very favorite moment was when the winemaker poured us a blend and proclaimed, “Not sure what the red in this one is. We just use what’s left over sometimes.”

I appreciate the honesty!

Again, the wine wasn’t for me, but the service was stellar and they have an excellent patio for warm-weather wine drinking. You do have to drive down a gravel road for about three miles on the way there, so keep that in mind if you’re road-tripping in a sedan.

8. Natural Falls State Park

Distance:  77 miles Drive Time:  1 hour 10 minutes

A woman stands in front of a waterfall with her dog on Tulsa day trips.

Oklahoma has waterfalls! We didn’t make it out to Turner Falls Park, but I was able to get my waterfall fix with a shorter drive time to Natural Falls State Park.

Fun fact: Natural Falls State Park was featured in the movie Where the Red Fern Grows . Yes, it’s the one with the dogs.

We spent a few hours here hiking with the pup . The Dripping Springs Trail is what this one is known for, but if you’re up for some scrambling, the Fox Den Trail was my favorite. If this sounds right up your alley, check out my detailed guide to Natural Falls State Park .

9. Park Hill, Oklahoma

Distance:  72 miles Drive Time:  1 hour 10 minutes

The interior of Hunter's Home in Park Hill on Tulsa day trips

You can easily combine this one with Tahlequah, my next recommendation on the list, but this one will become even more of a destination once the Cherokee Heritage Center reopens. It was under renovation during our own visit, but I’m excited to see what they do with all of that land.

Park Hill is still worth a visit for Hunter’s Home, a house and museum that may seem like any other plantation home in the South. Visit for a tour and you’ll find that it boasts quite a bit more depth than that. The home has a connection to the Cherokee Nation.

It was inhabited by wealthy planter George M. Murrell and Minerva Ross, the niece of Cherokee leader John Ross. You’ll learn all about those folks and about the enslaved population that worked this land on a guided tour from knowledgeable docents.

Don’t miss all of the farm animals outside. I mean, you probably won’t be able to if you tried because they like to make their presence known with their bleating and gobbles.

10. Tahlequah, Oklahoma

Distance:  72 miles Drive Time:  1 hour 15 minutes

The outside of a museum in Tahlequah on day trips from Tulsa

Plan a day trip from Tulsa where you learn more about the history of the region. Visit the capital of the Cherokee Nation in just over an hour from central Tulsa. The trio of museums in downtown Tahlequah is the biggest draw here, and that’s where you should start if you want a primer on Cherokee history.

I describe our own full day in Tahlequah in my complete guide to the town. Don’t miss the pizza shop where Carrie Underwood used to work while you’re here.

Note: Travelers with more time in the area may want to tack on Sequoyah State Park, a jewel of the Oklahoma State Park system, on trips to Tahlequah. It’s just a 20-minute drive to scenic shorelines, hiking, and horseback riding.

11. Arcadia, Oklahoma

Distance:  90 miles Drive Time:  1 hour 20 minutes

This popular Route 66 stop was high on my list because of Pops 66 . It’s a diner and soda shop, but you’re here for those pops. Grab an empty six-pack and choose your own bottles from the fridge or the aisles full of weird and wonderful fizzy flavors.

I’m talking blue cheese sodas (didn’t do it), sarsaparilla root beer (did it and loved it), blueberry fizz (did it and really loved it), and fancy pear beverages that will make you think like you’re in Napa ( loooooved it).

If you’re already traveling to Oklahoma City, it’s super easy to add this one to your list. Don’t miss the Arcadia Round Barn while you’re traveling through here. That’s another Route 66 special.

12. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Distance:  106 miles Drive Time:  1 hour 35 minutes

The inside of a botanical garden in Oklahoma City on day trips from Tulsa

We visited Oklahoma City from Tulsa a few times during our extended stay, as there really is so much to do here. You could easily spend a full weekend here, but if that’s not happening and you want to see the Oklahoma State Capitol, I don’t blame you.

With just a day, I’d prioritize the First Americans Museum, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and the Plaza Walls. If it’s chilly out, the Myriad Botanical Gardens pictured above are another great option that don’t take up much of your time.

You could also just pick and choose from my weekend in Oklahoma City itinerary .

More Incredible Day Trips from Tulsa

Even with a full month in Oklahoma, we still missed out on some easy road trips from Tulsa. Here are a few more ideas for scenic places near Tulsa and easy Tulsa weekend getaways.

Note: I’m not including Blue Hole Park in Salina, Oklahoma, on the list because it was temporarily closed at the time I put this guide together. I also read some bad reviews about overflowing trash and huge crowds when it was open, so meh.
  • Bixby, Oklahoma (23 miles/30 minutes): Escape the city for some green space. Take a stroll through the Washington Irving Memorial Park and Arboretum for starters. If you visit in-season, indulge in the you-pick farms for fresh fruit.
  • Claremore, Oklahoma (30 miles/35 minutes): Learn about the birthplace of Will Rogers at the aptly-named Will Rogers Memorial Museum. While he was born in nearby Oologah, this is your best bet for an education into the life of the famous cowboy and entertainer.
  • Depew, Oklahoma (41 miles/45 minutes): This one was at the top of our list thanks to the Living Kitchen Farm and Dairy , home to family-style dining and many goats. Unfortunately, they only do dinners from April through December, which was outside of our travel range.
  • Bartlesville, Oklahoma (45 miles/50 minutes): The big draw here is the home of the Phillips Petroleum Company and the Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve. We got our fill of oil history in Tulsa, but it would have been neat to see the Frank Lloyd Wright tower.
  • Braggs, Oklahoma (64 miles/1 hour 5 minutes): The big thing to brag about in Braggs is Greenleaf State Park, a family-friendly place with easy nature trails and camping for those who like waking up outside. It’s not for me, but you do you.
  • Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees, Oklahoma (82 miles/1 hour 25 minutes): Outdoor enthusiasts can check out this popular destination for watersports like boating, swimming, and fishing. Fishing is a sport, right? Nearby Grove is your best bet for shopping and eats.
  • Commerce, Oklahoma (94 miles/1 hour 30 minutes): See the boyhood home of Mickey Mantle, also known as “the Commerce Comet.” The only reason we didn’t make this one a priority was that there are no tours of the inside of the home. Missed tourism opportunity!
  • Pawhuska, Oklahoma (56 miles/1 hour 35 minutes): This town is known for its tall grasses at the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. While you’re here, don’t miss The Pioneer Woman Mercantile . Ree Drummond fans, you probably know all about it.
  • McAlester, Oklahoma (91 miles/1 hour 40 minutes): History buffs will like the Tannehill Museum, home to artifacts from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. This one is also a great base for some of the best state parks near Tulsa: Lake Eufaula and Robbers Cave.
  • Robbers Cave State Park (126 miles/2 hours): I definitely have some FOMO about this one. Robbers Cave is named as such because it was a notorious hideout for outlaws in the 1800s. There’s also some stunning scenery here, but I’ve got priorities when it comes to crime.
  • Fayetteville, Arkansas (113 miles/2 hours 5 minutes): Seeking day trips from Tulsa to Arkansas? This college town is home to the University of Arkansas. If you don’t want to hang out with the coeds, you can stroll around the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.
  • Bentonville, Arkansas (114 miles/2 hours 10 minutes): The big draw at this Arkansas town in the Ozarks is the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art . Treat yourself to over 100 acres of an art lover’s wonderland.
  • Turner Falls Park, Oklahoma (182 miles/2 hours 40 minutes): We chose Natural Falls State Park for efficiency’s sake, but if you want to see Oklahoma’s tallest waterfall, you’ll have to travel to Davis. Turner Falls drops into the pools below from 77 feet.
  • Eureka Springs, Arkansas: (148 miles/2 hours 45 minutes): This picturesque town in the Ozark Mountains is known for its natural scenery, architecture, and vibrant arts community. It’s also home to the Christ of the Ozarks, a 65-foot statue of Jesus.
  • Springfield, Missouri (181 miles/2 hours 45 minutes): I have to give Missouri some love on this list because it’s so close to Tulsa. I’ll give some love to Kansas City, my favorite city in the state, elsewhere, but Springfield is a great option for art enthusiasts.

Best Weekend Trips from Tulsa

With more time, you can plan a Tulsa weekend getaway. Any of the options below are all over three hours from Tulsa, so they’re more suitable as the best road trips from Tulsa.

Trips within four hours of Tulsa are where I typically draw the line for a day trip vs. a weekend away, especially with limited time at a destination.

I’ll start with Tulsa weekend trips and places to visit near Tulsa, OK, that I’m well-acquainted with, then give you some extras that are still on my list. Five or so hours is kind of my limit for a weekend away, which unfortunately knocks out Memphis, Tennessee , one of my faves.

You’ll just have to make your way out to the Home of the Blues some other time. Not a problem!

28. Kansas City, Missouri

Distance:  272 miles Drive Time:  4 hours

A trio of women stand in front of the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City on Tulsa day trips.

Kansas City, Kansas, is also an option, but the Missouri side is where it’s at if you’re here for the barbecue. Kansas City-style barbecue is an entire movement, people. It’d be best if you tried it.

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que is the iconic option . Start here if you’re short on time so you can taste what this genre of meats should taste like. From there, you have so many options. LC’s Bar-B-Q is another classic. Buck Tui BBQ introduces Thai flavors into the mix.

Just go where the spirit moves you.

29. Little Rock, Arkansas

Distance:  276 miles Drive Time:  4 hours

A view of the river in Little Rock on day trips from Tulsa

We spent a full week in Little Rock, and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise . This one is great for history buffs. Start with a tour of Little Rock Central High School and learn more about the Little Rock Nine. Tours are free but you should book them in advance during peak travel times.

You could also spend a few hours at The William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum , an imposing structure full of secrets if you’re willing to give it some patience. I’m mostly kidding. Everything here is public record.

30. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Distance:  242 miles Drive Time: 4 hours 30 minutes

A view of the Buckstaff Bathhouse in Hot Springs on day trips from Tulsa

If you’re already in Little Rock, you may as well visit Hot Springs National Park while you’re at it. If you only have time for one and love ticking off those parks, this one is an easy way to kill an afternoon.

I mean that in the best way. We had lots of fun on the trails around the park and soaking in the old-timey tubs. I’ve got a full guide to Hot Springs National Park if you’re interested. It includes details on how modest gals like me handle the most immodest situations.

31. Dodge City, Kansas

Distance:  317 miles Drive Time:  5 hours

Inside the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas, on day trips from Tulsa

We visited Dodge City in the early months of our nomadic adventures . It was an easy stop on our way to somewhere else, and Brian loved the idea of being somewhere known for its connection to Wyatt Earp.

It’s exactly what you’d expect out of a town like this. While I had mixed feelings about Tombstone , a fairly cheesy tourist town in Arizona, Dodge City felt a little more authentic.

Fun fact: Visit the Boot Hill Museum for a primer on how this town became the “wickedest little city in America.”

More Trips Within 6 Hours of Tulsa

OK, so six hours is a bit of a stretch even for weekend getaways from Tulsa. I’ll keep things at less than five hours for you, but I did want to account for potential traffic. It’s a thing even in Oklahoma! Here are a few more that are still on my list for future adventures in and around the region.

  • Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma (190 miles/3 hours): Three hours is really pushing it for a day trip, but you could probably make it happen if you really want to see the critters here and don’t have a full weekend. This is the oldest managed wildlife facility in the country, which is a huge deal.
  • Wichita, Kansas (176 miles/3 hours 5 minutes): Bustling lil’ Wichita is a family-friendly weekend trip from Tulsa. Visit the Sedgwick County Zoo , the Great Plains Nature Center , and the Kansas Aviation Museum to keep littles entertained.
  • Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park, Oklahoma (162 miles/3 hours 10 minutes): This one used to go by Red Rock Canyon State Park, but it’s now privately run. That’s the only thing that gave us pause about a visit. Otherwise, it looks like a great escape for some hiking.
  • Little Sahara State Park, Oklahoma (180 miles/3 hours 15 minutes): You don’t have to go wherever the Sahara Desert is to enjoy epic sand dunes. OK, so these look a little more modest, but you’re in Oklahoma. You’ll have a great time.
  • Beavers Bend State Park and Nature Center, Oklahoma (207 miles/3 hours and 40 minutes): Beavers Bend is picturesque as heck thanks to its location on the shores of Broken Bow Lake and the Mountain Fork River. Enjoy scenery, hiking, and river float trips at this one.
  • Dallas, Texas (257 miles/4 hours 30 minutes): It’s true. I haven’t been to Dallas yet. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial is worth the trip for me alone, but the Texas city’s burgeoning food scene also makes this one a great weekend holiday.

Where to Stay in Tulsa

I assume you’ll have Tulsa as your base if you’re seeking trips from the Oklahoma town. We stayed at a short-term rental for a full month in Tulsa, but use the map below to peruse options for short trips or road trip stops:

Why do people go to Tulsa?

People go to Tulsa for its history, architecture, and Oklahoma day trips from Tulsa. It’s a great base for adventures along Route 66, natural attractions, and towns with significance to the local Native American tribes.

When you’re in the middle of your Tulsa trip planning, extend your stay for some of these Tulsa getaways .

Ready for Day Trips from Tulsa, Oklahoma?

Your Flight: I use a variety of tools to find cheap airfare, but if you’re looking to book during a particular period of time, you should use Skyscanner . It’s a great tool for when you’re more flexible, too, as it allows you to compare travel based on length of travel, departure date, etc.

If your Oklahoma travel is limited to Tulsa, you’ll need to fly into Tulsa International Airport for your trip. It’s a smaller, regional airport, so expect connections no matter where your start is.

For adventurous folks who travel on the reg, I also subscribe to Going , formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights. You’ll get cheap flight deals from your home base straight to your inbox. It’s a great way to visit destinations you’ve always wanted to visit or that weren’t even on your radar.

Your Accommodations: I usually use Booking.com and Hotels.com for our hotel needs. Both offer loyalty programs and now offer listings that are more of the home or condo rental variety, which is great. Vrbo is my preferred Airbnb alternative.

Seeking even more wallet-friendly accommodations? Try Hostelworld . Their picks are heavily vetted and reviewed to offer you a safe experience on a budget.

Etc.: For general travel goodies, visit my Favorite Things page. For more information on planning your travel, visit my Travel Tools page. It’s heavy on the text but super helpful for overall trip planning!

  • 7 Coolest Towns In Oklahoma For A Summer Vacation In 2024

Oklahoma shines in summer. This south-central state has ten distinct ecoregions that attract vacationers. Hikers hike the High Plains, climbers climb the Ouachita Mountains, boaters boat the Cypress Swamps, and motocrossers cross the Crosstimbers. Yet, when it comes time to hang up their cleats, crampons, oars, or goggles, several small communities bring those adventurers together under the common serenity of summertime Oklahoma. Learn more about the best bases for a more-than-OK summer vacation in 2024.

Boise City, Oklahoma

Traveling to the end of the Oklahoma Panhandle , AKA No Man's Land, may not seem like a fun summer vacation - unless your target is Black Mesa. Standing 4,973 feet above sea level, Black Mesa will get you higher than you have ever been in Oklahoma since it is the highest point in the state . Yes, it is higher than all of OK's mountain ranges. Unlike the mountains, however, Black Mesa's rise is gradual, so reaching its Oklahoma peak (it is taller in New Mexico and Colorado ) is relatively easy.

Off the flat-topped summit, vacationers can picnic, camp, fish, and stargaze at Black Mesa State Park and then retreat to Boise City, the biggest base for a Black Mesa adventure, which means it has over 1,000 residents, a museum, and a couple of decent restaurants. Tour the Cimarron Heritage Center & Museum before chowing at Farmhouse Cafe or Guera's Tacos.

Medicine Park

Medicine Park in the Wichita Mountains.

If you are looking for a truly prominent peak to test your summer stamina, visit the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, which contains rugged Mount Pinchot. Unfortunately, this 2,476-foot mountain (variable measurement) is protected from the public. Fortunately, its 12-foot shorter neighbor, Mount Scott, is open to everyone from motorists to bikers to hikers to rock climbers. After Scott rocks your socks, treat yourself to Medicine Park , a scenic 400-ish-person town at the foot of the preserve.

Among its nourishing attractions are Mrs. Chadwick's Bakery, Joe Mountain Breakfast Bar, The Old Plantation Restaurant, Discovery Outpost, Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center, and even a granite-based swimming hole called Bath Lake.

Grand Lake at sunset.

Dwarfing Bath Lake is the Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees , a 46,500-acre aquatic oasis straddling Grove in the Ozark foothills. In addition to swimming, fishing, boating, tubing, parasailing, and wakeboarding, the lake hosts a summer kickoff spectacular called Toes in the Grand. This year, it is set to run from June 7 to 9 and feature everything from boat races to a huge car, truck, and motorcycle show. For a quieter Grove getaway, check out Har-Ber Village Museum, a lakeside complex of nearly 100 exhibits representing pioneer life, or Lendonwood Gardens, an eight-acre preserve of over 1,000 kinds of plants. Get your grub at Matt's Place, Raggedy's Cafe, or La Casita De Martin.

Chickasaw Visitor Center with Artesian Hotel in Sulphur, Oklahoma.

Another OK mountain range, the Arbuckles, peaks at about 1,400 feet and can be seen from Sulphur , a 5,000ish-person gateway to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Preserving nearly 10,000 acres of the Arbuckle foothills, the area is filled with lush forests, pristine prairies, spring-fed creeks, ravishing waterfalls, diverse wildlife, and the legendary Lake of the Arbuckles. As such, it attracts hikers, campers, hunters, swimmers, boaters, and fishers.

Sadly, a tornado struck the region on April 27, 2024, and caused significant damage. Although the Chickasaw Cultural Center and Chickasaw Visitor Center seem to be standing, another iconic Sulphur structure, the Artesian Hotel, lost windows and electricity, while the Chickasaw's campgrounds closed for safety reasons. Hopefully, those picturesque places will reopen to accommodate summer tourists.

Cherokee Heritage Center at Tahlequah, Oklahoma

Like Grove, Tahlequah clings to the edge of the Ozarks and adjoins beautiful hills, streams, lakes, and rock formations. Such sights appear in full, summer-enhanced glory in the J.T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve, a 17,000-acre wonderland called the Ozarks' largest privately protected conservation area. Beyond stunning scenery, it preserves the first elk herd to live in the region in over 150 years. After tramping around the outskirts, summer tourists can tumble into Tahlequah for cultural and architectural sightseeing.

As the headquarters of Northeastern State University and the Cherokee Nation , this 16,000ish-person community contains an eminent and eminently tourable campus plus Indigenous icons like the Cherokee National History Museum, Cherokee National Prison Museum, and Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum. The last of those is the oldest surviving government building in Oklahoma. Fill the gaps in your tours with food from Emery’s Grill, White Wolf Steakhouse, and Kroner & Baer Brewpub.

Pauls Valley

Garvin County Courthouse in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma

A quirkier choice for an Oklahoma vacation, Pauls Valley is home to the Okie Noodling Tournament, which runs the third weekend of June and is dubbed the world’s largest noodling contest. For those unaware, "noodling," in this context, is hooking a catfish with your arm instead of an actual hook. If you would rather not spend your vacation fisting fish, you can visit another offbeat attraction, The Toy & Action Figure Museum, or do a different kind of noodling at Primavera Italian Restaurant.

Moreover, since Pauls Valley sits just northwest of Sulphur, you can escape to Arbuckle-mounted preserves like the aforementioned Chickasaw National Recreation Area and Turner Falls Park, whose namesake feature is 77 feet tall.

Beavers Bend State Park marina in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.

Joining the Wichitas, Ozarks, and Arbuckles as OK's major mountain ranges, the Ouachitas are the tallest of the bunch and can be explored via Broken Bow. This tiny community straddles a subrange called the Kiamichi Mountains, whose foothills are full of scenic wonders like Broken Bow Lake, a 22-mile-long reservoir calibrated for boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing; Beavers Bend State Park, a 3,482-acre natural playground offering myriad outdoor activities; and Cedar Creek Golf Course, which spans some 6,600 yards of lakeside greenery and is set within Beavers Bend State Park.

Also in the area is the even tinier community of Hochatown, whose amazing attractions include the MAZE of Hochatown and the Hochatown Rescue Center and Petting Zoo. Vacationers can relax in Broken Bow proper with a donut at Doughnut Theory or a drink at Rogue Local.

Oklahoma's diverse terrain attracts a variety of vacationers during summer. They might come for grand sites like Black Mesa, the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, and the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, but they stay for the small but vibrant communities that provide access to said attractions and relaxation after seeing said attractions. Boise City, Medicine Park, Grove, Sulphur, Tahlequah, Pauls Valley, and Broken Bow can be fantastic bases for an Oklahoma summer vacation in 2024.

Record travel expected this Memorial Day weekend

( The Hill ) — A record number of Americans are expected to travel by car this Memorial Day weekend, and airports could be busier than they’ve been since 2005, according to a forecast released Monday by AAA.

The auto club anticipates 43.8 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. That’s a 4 percent increase from the same period last year and within striking distance of the 2005 record of 44 million Memorial Day weekend travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, AAA Travel’s senior vice president. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Road travelers are expected to hit a record 38.4 million, the highest number since AAA started tracking in 2000. While gas prices are similar to last year at roughly $3.57 per gallon, AAA warned “prices may creep higher,” with fluctuating oil prices being a “wildcard” and wars in the Middle East and Ukraine potentially putting pressure on oil markets.

Another 3.5 million are expected to fly, making it the most crowded Memorial Day weekend in nearly two decades. In 2005, a record 3.6 million travelers flew during Memorial Day weekend as the travel industry rebounded from the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Demand for other methods of transportation including buses, trains and cruises is also recovering from the toll of the pandemic. An estimated 1.9 million people are expected to take one of these other modes of transportation, up 5.6 percent from a year ago.

“This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

oklahoma trips weekend

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

oklahoma trips weekend

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

Where to see northern lights Saturday night, what times they will be visible

A severe geomagnetic storm powered by five coronal ejections from the sun will result in a vivid aurora borealis. Here are some tips for seeing it this weekend.

oklahoma trips weekend

This article has been updated to include a recap of Friday’s aurora activity and Saturday’s forecast.

One of the strongest geomagnetic storms in two decades hit Earth on Friday afternoon, with more activity continuing through the weekend.

Friday’s storm already brought beautiful northern lights displays as far south as Mexico. It also disrupted some power grids and radio and GPS communications, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Geomagnetic storms occur when the sun sends a punch of charged particles and parts of its magnetic field to Earth, often through eruptions from its surface called coronal mass ejections. This severe geomagnetic storm — rated a Level 5 out of 5 — resulted from numerous coronal mass ejections this week, some of which are catching up with one another as they hurtle through space.

Forecasters said the sun has launched additional coronal mass ejections , which could extend geomagnetic activity and displays of the northern lights through this weekend and into early next week.

Both Saturday and Sunday nights could offer more celestial viewing, though early Sunday morning and Sunday evening could be more promising, with displays as far south as Friday night if forecasts hold.

Here’s what you need to know about your chances to see the aurora and threats to satellite systems.

Where are the best places to see the northern lights this weekend?

The northern lights appeared unusually far south in the Northern Hemisphere on Friday night. People snapped photos in Italy, southern Switzerland and India. In North America, people reported sightings in Florida, Southern California and even Mexico.

In the Southern Hemisphere, aurora were photographed in Chile , Argentina and New Zealand , where they are known as aurora australis or the southern lights. Activity was exceptionally strong Friday night to Saturday morning Eastern time, hitting a Level of 5 out of 5.

Current NOAA models show geomagnetic storm activity will initially be less intense Saturday night. By the pre-dawn hours Sunday, however, storm activity may increase markedly, offering early risers a memorable display of the northern lights, especially after around 4 a.m. Eastern. The exact timing of the increase in storminess is very uncertain, though.

If the storm activity reaches a Level 4 or 5 early Sunday, which NOAA indicates is possible, the northern lights may become visible again in most of the United States.

A secondary peak in the current solar storms appears likely... pic.twitter.com/WMlbGKNfaB — NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (@NWSSWPC) May 12, 2024

When the storm activity increases, the aurora will tend to be most vibrant in northern areas and will become more faint to the south — in some places only visible through cameras.

“Cellphones are much better than our eyes at capturing light,” Brent Gordon, chief of NOAA’s Space Weather Services Branch, said in a news conference Friday. “Just go out your back door and take a picture with a newer cellphone, and you’d be amazed at what you see in that picture versus what you see with your eyes.”

If severe to extreme geomagnetic storm activity (Levels 4 and 5) lasts into the evening Sunday, the northern lights may continue to be visible unusually far south for yet another night.

Will the aurora be blocked by clouds?

Even if geomagnetic activity is high, clouds can block out the light show. Unfortunately, considerable cloud cover will blanket the Northeast and south-central United States, although some gaps in the cloud canopy are probable. Clear skies are most likely over the Midwest, Southeast and Western United States.

If you are in a cloud-free area, make sure you find a dark sky location away from city lights.

What will the aurora look like near me?

Not all auroras look the same. Some are undulating bright green and purple curtains, and others are a diffuse red and orange glow. The colors and structure of the aurora appear differently depending on the latitude and altitude.

Auroras are created when solar particles and plasma temporarily disturb Earth’s magnetosphere. Some solar particles get trapped along Earth’s magnetic field lines into the upper atmosphere. Here, they excite nitrogen and oxygen molecules and release photons of light in different colors. Excited oxygen atoms shine red when they are more than 120 miles above the surface and glow green from 60 to 120 miles. Excited nitrogen atoms give off pink or purple hues below 120 miles.

Dancing green or purple auroras are typically seen at higher latitudes. Lower latitudes usually see more red auroras because red occurs at higher altitudes and can be seen further away from the poles. If you’re in the mid-latitudes (in Virginia or Arizona, for example), your aurora may appear more red than those in Canada or Finland.

Will this affect communications systems or the power grid?

A severe geomagnetic storm can cause issues with power systems, spacecraft operations, radio communications and even pipeline systems, if not appropriately prepared for.

“Our role is to alert the operators of these different systems so that they’re aware and can take actions to mitigate these kinds of impacts,” Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference Friday.

Steenburgh and his colleagues work with grid operators across North America to ensure high-voltage transmission lines can withstand the incoming surge of energy from the sun. Over past decades, engineers have built systems that can protect power lines rapidly and keep them online during geomagnetic storms.

Geomagnetic storms can also affect satellite and radio communications, sometimes interfering with signals transmitted in our ionosphere. Anyone using high-frequency radio in the aurora viewing zone may experience some disruptions, said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center. Under some circumstances, the influx of solar particles can cause low-Earth orbiting satellites to drag lower into the atmosphere.

For the most part, individuals should not be affected or take extra precautions beyond what they might for a typical severe weather storm. If a power outage does occur, people should make sure they have batteries, weather radio and a generator, if necessary.

“They don’t need to do anything out of the extraordinary, if they’ve already got these measures taken care of, because these events are very rare,” Dahl said.

Solar Storm Intensifies, Filling Skies With Northern Lights

Officials warned of potential blackouts or interference with navigation and communication systems this weekend, as well as auroras as far south as Southern California or Texas.

By Katrina Miller and Judson Jones

Katrina Miller reports on space and astronomy and Judson Jones is a meteorologist.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest-level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system.

It is the strongest such storm to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That one was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa.

The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.

The solar activity is so powerful that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors space weather, issued an unusual storm watch for the first time in 19 years, which was then upgraded to a warning. The agency began observing outbursts on the sun’s surface on Wednesday, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday morning.

For people in many places, the most visible part of the storm will be the northern lights, known also as auroras. But authorities and companies will also be on the lookout for the event’s effects on infrastructure, like global positioning systems, radio communications and even electrical power.

While the northern lights are most often seen in higher latitudes closer to the North Pole, people in many more parts of the world are already getting a show this weekend that could last through the early part of next week.

Windmills against skies glowing pink, purple and green.

As Friday turned to Saturday in Europe, people across the continent described skies hued in a mottling of colors.

Alfredo Carpineti , an astrophysicist, journalist and author in North London, saw them with his husband from the rooftop of their apartment building.

“It is incredible to be able to see the aurora directly from one’s own backyard,” he said. “I was hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of green on the horizon, but it was all across the sky in both green and purple.”

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend’s solar event.

How will the storm affect people on Earth?

A geomagnetic storm watch or warning indicates that space weather may affect critical infrastructure on or orbiting near Earth. It may introduce additional current into systems, which could damage pipelines, railroad tracks and power lines.

According to Joe Llama, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, communications that rely on high frequency radio waves, such as ham radio and commercial aviation , are most likely to suffer. That means it is unlikely that your cellphone or car radio, which depend on much higher frequency radio waves, will conk out.

Still, it is possible for blackouts to occur. As with any power outage, you can prepare by keeping your devices charged and having access to backup batteries, generators and radio.

The most notable solar storm recorded in history occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it lasted for nearly a week, creating aurora that stretched down to Hawaii and Central America and impacting hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph lines.

But that was technology of the 19th century, used before scientists fully understood how solar activity disrupted Earth’s atmosphere and communication systems.

“That was an extreme level event,” said Shawn Dahl, a forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “We are not anticipating that.”

Unlike tornado watches and warnings, the target audience for NOAA’s announcements is not the public.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The goal of the announcements is to give agencies and companies that operate this infrastructure time to put protection measures in place to mitigate any effects.

“If everything is working like it should, the grid will be stable and they’ll be able to go about their daily lives,” Mr. Steenburgh said.

Will I be able to see the northern lights?

It is possible that the northern lights may grace the skies this week over places that don’t usually see them. The best visibility is outside the bright lights of cities.

Clouds or stormy weather could pose a problem in some places. But if the skies are clear, even well south of where the aurora is forecast to take place, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone. The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Another opportunity could be viewing sunspots during the daytime, if your skies are clear. As always, do not look directly at the sun without protection. But if you still have your eclipse glasses lying around from the April 8 event, you may try to use them to try to spot the cluster of sunspots causing the activity.

How strong is the current geomagnetic storm?

Giant explosions on the surface of the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, send streams of energetic particles into space. But the sun is large, and such outbursts may not cross our planet as it travels around the star. But when these particles create a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA classifies these storms on a “G” scale of 1 to 5, with G1 being minor and G5 being extreme. The most extreme storms can cause widespread blackouts and damage to infrastructure on Earth. Satellites may also have trouble orienting themselves or sending or receiving information during these events.

The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface — that is about 16 times the diameter of Earth. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Why is this happening now?

The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle, and right now, it is approaching a solar maximum. Three other severe geomagnetic storms have been observed so far in the current activity cycle, which began in December 2019, but none were predicted to cause effects strong enough on Earth to warrant a watch or warning announcement.

The cluster of sunspots generating the current storm is the largest seen in this solar cycle, NOAA officials said. They added that the activity in this cycle has outperformed initial predictions .

More flares and expulsions from this cluster are expected, but because of the sun’s rotation the cluster will be oriented in a position less likely to affect Earth. In the coming weeks, the sunspots may appear again on the left side of the sun, but it is difficult for scientists to predict whether this will cause another bout of activity.

“Usually, these don’t come around packing as much of a punch as they did originally,” Mr. Dahl said. “But time will tell on that.”

Jonathan O’Callaghan contributed reporting from London.

Memorial Day road trip ahead. Here are the best and worst times to go in Florida, the Southeast

oklahoma trips weekend

Memorial Day is rapidly approaching, which means millions will be hitting the roadways or skies for a quick weekend getaway.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period. This is a 4% increase over last year, with experts noting this comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

When is Memorial Day 2024? When is Memorial Day weekend 2024?

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of May, with this year's being on Monday, May 27. Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, and lasts through the holiday until Monday.

Why we celebrate: What to know about federal holiday, what’s open in Florida

Which will be more congested for Memorial Day travel — roadways or airports?

According to AAA, road trips are expected to set a record with 38.4 million people projected to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend. Drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.

Renting a car for your road trip? Florida-based rental company  Hertz  says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand, with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

But airports are also bracing for a large surge of travelers next weekend.

Is Memorial Day a busy airport day?

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11," AAA said in its press release.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly two million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

“This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

When are the best and worst times to travel on Memorial Day?

For those planning a road trip for the holiday weekend, transportation data and insights provider INRIX offers the best times to get on the road.

Experts advise drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said.
