Tennis World Tour 2

Hitting like tennis icons Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on a real court may be close to impossible. Tennis World Tour 2 will give fans the chance to at least hit like some of their favorite pros on the virtual court. The new game from NACON and Big Ant Studios will feature 38 professional players, including a few tennis legends.

The roster announcement came just a day after Domenic Thiem won a thrilling fifth-set tiebreak to capture his first U.S. Open title. The newly crowned Grand Slam winner is one of the playable pros in Tennis World Tour 2 . On the WTA side, world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, American Madison Keys, Canadian Bianca Andreescu, and Czech Petra Kvitova are amongst the playable pros in the women’s game. You can find the full list of players in Tennis World Tour 2 below.

The tennis sim is set to launch on September 24th on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and October 15 on Nintendo Switch. The game is a sequel to the poorly reviewed Tennis World Tour , which launched despite the original game publisher, BigBen Interactive, admitting the game was only about 20 percent completed with weeks to go before release. It should be noted that the sequel is being produced by Big Ant Studios, an Australian game developer known for rugby, lacrosse, and cricket titles. There are several new features that the studio hopes will put the series back on track:

  • Highly anticipated new features: the ability to play doubles matches with up to 4 players locally and online, a competitive mode, an improved serve system and a new shot timing mechanic
  • More realistic: more animations create smoother gameplay
  • Multiple game modes: Career, Quick Match, Online, Tournament, Ranked Match and Tie Break Tens – there’s a format to suit every player
  • Several official courts: Manolo Santana of the Mutua Madrid Open, the OWL ARENA of Halle or the 3 courts of Roland-Garros: Philippe-Chatrier, Suzanne-Lenglen and Simonne-Mathieu.

Update 1.11 has arrived for Tennis World Tour 2 , and here’s the full list of changes and fixes added with this patch.

With Roland Garros now in full swing, a new update has now been released for Tennis World Tour 2. Developer Big Ant Studios has now released a new stadium that you can play in the game. If you have the PS4 version, the update number is 1.11.

As for the patch size, I had to download 2.197 GB on my PS4 Pro. Bear in mind the patch size might be different if you own the game on PC, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.

You can read the full patch notes for the latest update below.

  • Added Allianz Cloud Stadium

If you did not know, this is a real life stadium that is located currently in Italy. It does not appear as if anymore patch notes have been released for the game at this time. We’ll be sure to update this post if Big Ant Studios releases more patch notes in the future.

The last update was 1.10 and that included ‘ general stability improvements “. Tennis World Tour 2 is out now for the PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch platforms.

Tennis World Tour 2 Reviews

Weak

Tennis World Tour 2 is a solid all-round tennis game, and the inclusion of the wildcard system offers an additional and entertaining tactical layer to consider as you play. It's just a shame that some minor issues hold it back from being great.

TWT2 feels unfinished, underdeveloped and somewhat soulless in some aspects. The swing mechanic might be a good idea conceptually, but it falls short of supplying that satisfaction that is transferred from simply hitting the ball in a tennis video game. Couple that with the malnourished feature set and you have one of the most disappointing tennis video games in a long while.

A good tennis simulation that, despite a few flaws and frustrating controls, has managed to achieve a much better result than the original game.

Review in Italian | Read full review

Tennis World Tour 2 has gameplay that takes a while to master, but the healthy roster and well-designed courts offers a lot for tennis fans.

Tennis World Tour 2 on the PlayStation 5 is the definitive way to experience this realistic simulation title. While it does have quite a few flaws considering the package, there's still a lot to love for those looking for a tennis game with a learning curve.

But unfortunately, even the different modes, slick visuals and silky-smooth frame rate can’t make up for the fact that World Tennis Tour 2 Complete Edition’s core experience, playing tennis, is a huge let-down. It is extremely disappointing that Big Ant Studios has failed to adequately address the basic gameplay shortcomings that have been around since the first Tennis World Tour back in 2018. As a fan of the sport I badly wanted this game to be better, but Tennis World Tour 2 Complete Edition will make even the most die-hard tennis fanatic want to smash their racquet and head to the dressing room.

Tennis World Tour 2 lacks focus and due to this, the game lingers in mediocrity. With inconsistent AI, a harsh timing mechanic paired with a stat-boosting card system, the game will turn away both hardcore and casual fans. Unfortunately, this is a double fault for the Tennis World Tour franchise.

Tennis World Tour 2 captures the flow of real-world tennis well, but that comes with a steep timing-based learning curve. Overcome it, and you'll be rewarded with a deep skill-based gameplay experience, that's elevated by a strategic deck building accompaniment. There's inconsistency to the presentation, with some awkward animations, physics, and art direction decisions – but the campaign is entertaining and online play will add longevity. As it stands, it's the best tennis game currently available on the PS4, but there's still room for further improvement here.

A highly unsatisfying and directionless tennis game, with an abysmal character creator and career mode. Steer well clear and buy AO Tennis 2, bizarrely made by the exact same team responsible for this monstrosity.

Tennis World Tour fails to nail the basics and lacks any frills for long term investment. Tennis fans should look elsewhere for their simulation needs.

Tennis World Tour 2 improves upon its disastrous predecessor, but cannot completely make us forget its flaws because it's based on the same creaky structure. It can be fun, but you shouldn't expect perfection.

Tennis World Tour 2 is an undeniable improvement on the original release and it's also arguably a great tennis game for those who can get into it. Aesthetically, it looks good from afar, with fluid animations and speed that honestly gives the feel of a tennis match and features a wide number of game modes, giving you a lot to play through. The problem, however, is that the core game mechanics are inaccessible and unapproachable, offering no settings to reduce the reliance of awfully specific precision-based button pressing which can ruin the core career mode. A mixed bag, this will appeal for fans of tennis, but the opaque nature of the gameplay makes it too hard to recommend.

Tennis World Tour 2 is a simulation style affair that demands much from its players but doesn't reciprocate with a game that's capable of matching their efforts. Flaky AI and a lack of basic player animations leads to core gameplay here that feels rough and unsatisfying for the most part. Matches often descend into a procession of double faults, there's absolutely zero net play, and no matter how much practice you put in, things always feel like they're out of your control. There is a decent selection of modes here and the fundamental ideas behind the gameplay could have made for a good time, but a lack of finesse in how these things have been implemented mean this one is best avoided by all but the most foolhardy of tennis fans.

Tennis World Tour 2 improves many of the aspects of the first release and adds new playable features. Perhaps the best game of tennis today but it is far from being the simulator that tennis lovers want. It has a lot of work ahead of it.

Review in Spanish | Read full review

On the face of it, Tennis World Tour 2 may look like a simple update, but it is a real overhaul in depth, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This translates into more powerful sensations and a more realistic overall rendering, thanks to a more subtle management of timing as well as risk-taking, although floats remain due to still very intrusive audiences.

Review in French | Read full review

Tennis World Tour 2 isn't necessarily the most robust or enticing offering when it comes to tennis games, but it's one of the only simulation games out there. If you're a die-hard tennis fan, it's worth a shot to see if it can keep your attention. But casual fans should consider looking elsewhere.

Overall, Tennis World Tour 2 is far better than the 2018's Tennis World Tour. Big Ant Studios improved on the gameplay, and the character models actually look decent here. That said, the game is still not as polished as Top Spin or Virtua Tennis. It's still worth playing though if you are a hardcore fan of the tennis sport.

The new team in charge of Tennis World Tour 2 has thankfully made enhancements to a series that badly needed a do-over. It puts it in a better position for the future by expanding the roster and making key gameplay improvements. Although animations have been doubled, characters still appear to be quite stiff at times and even slide into animations awkwardly. The courts are nicely rendered, and when playing exhibition matches, you can freely alter the surface type on non-licensed venues. I think the timing of strokes needs to be adjusted, especially when playing on an easier difficulty.

Tennis World Tour 2 is a complex sports sim that features some real nuances of playing tennis. Unfortunately, that results in convoluted controls with little instruction on how to use them. It'll keep hard-core sports gamers busy for a while, but is not a very good option for casual tennis fans.

Get ready to hit the court and climb up the competitive ladder to become one of the greatest tennis players of all time. While Tennis World Tour 2 could provide deep and rewarding gameplay, its passable controls hinder the player's enjoyment and turns a possibly great game into a frustrating experience.

next-gen tennis world tour 2 review

Next-Gen Tennis World Tour 2 Review: More Update Than Overhaul

Image of Kevin Scott

Even though Tennis World Tour 2 was a definite improvement on its predecessor in a lot of ways there was still plenty of room for improvement. For some of these improvements, there’s no need to wait until Tennis World Tour 3 thanks to the game’s obligatory next-gen upgrade that is now out. Anyone who purchased the Ace Edition, or holders of the Annual Pass, will be able to access the next-gen Tennis World Tour 2 upgrade free of charge. However, if you only have the digital standard edition of the game, you only get a 50% discount when purchasing the next-gen version.

This discount might not be enough for some to take the plunge. Next-gen Tennis World Tour 2 feels more like the last-gen version with some nice new polish and additional content rather than being transformative or an all-new game. Though it may have taken a step forward with its presentation and its connection to the real world of tennis, it still seems stuck in the past due to some frustrating gameplay issues that can’t help but hamper the action on the court.

Let’s have a look at some of the ways Tennis World Tour 2 has improved in its jump to next-gen consoles, and then go through a couple things that are still holding it back from winning any Grand Slams this time around.

Next-Gen Tennis World Tour 2 – What’s Better?

Tennis World Tour 2 next-gen

Graphics & Presentation

The player models still look like figures at a wax museum coming to life at times. That being said, all of the players do look and move a little more realistically than they did in the last-gen version of TWT2 . There’s more differentiation in the ways different pros strike the ball with ground strokes and serves — or even receive serves. This means they’re even more recognizable now.

Over the course of a match, there seems to be a few more inserts and cutscenes of players responding to how a point has played out. These elements add another level of realism and help keep you invested in the heated competition. Naturally, you want to see players get fired up after winning a point in a long rally or disappointed when they sail a shot wide. Tennis World Tour 2 delivers those kinds of reactions enough of the time.

On top of that, simple things like your player getting balls from a ball boy, or grabbing a quick towel, or checking the tension of your racket’s strings between points are appreciated. It’s this kind of minutiae that really helps give off the impression that you’re watching a real TV broadcast.

Career Mode

Tennis World Tour 2 PS5

There are several ways Tennis World Tour 2 has improved its career mode, but none are more important than the ability to now disable the uninspired skills card bonuses system that was previously a large component of the mode. These cards that you could purchase from your career earnings would give you the unrealistic ability to either boost your own attributes or nerf your opponent’s skills for a specific period of time during a match. They really have no place in a tennis simulation, so it’s great that you can simply turn them off (you can also do the same in exhibition matches).

Alongside this, there are also new additions like the ATP Cup to further enhance career mode. The ATP Cup provides another real-life tennis tournament (and a unique international competition that’s kind of similar to the Davis Cup, to boot) to go alongside the ones that were already in the game. There are some new players here as well. You now get a chance to go head-to-head with someone like Andy Murray. Of course, this gives you the opportunity to use Murray, or a new legend like Maria Sharapova, in other modes like online play, which should provide more choices and variety.

It’s also appreciated that doubles events are a regular occurrence in your career. Now it is common for you to be eliminated from a tournament on the singles side of the bracket, but then jump right into the doubles bracket of the same event. This is not only a realistic portrayal of what life is like for a pro tennis player, but it also helps to break up some of the monotony of the mode by having you play what can sometimes feel like a whole different sport.

Next-Gen Tennis World Tour 2 – What’s Not Better

Tennis World Tour 2

The mechanic used to hit the ball in TWT2 should be pretty familiar to anyone who has played Top Spin 4 or even Full Ace Tennis Simulato r on PC. In theory, it’s a straightforward mini-game. You tap a button at the right moment for an accurate shot, and hold that button longer to add power to your shot at the risk of sacrificing some of that accuracy if your timing is off. In practice, it’s a bit more of a crapshoot than it should be because there’s a lack of consistency in results. This is experienced most often when trying to aim your shots. Sometimes there is an open side you’re trying to hit to in order to put away a point, but your directional input isn’t registered and you just hit it right back to the middle.

Another problem is the fluidity of the animations. A lack of fluidity results in a lot instances of players warping to a ball when they’re not really in reach of it. The limitations in this department cause the game to sometimes feel as if it’s on rails. The flip side of that coin is that there are also frustrating moments where you push a button to hit a ball that seems within reach, and yet the game won’t give you an animation. In those situations, the ball then goes sailing by while your player does absolutely nothing.

As for serving, it’s safe to say it seemed better to me before I played a lot of Full Ace Tennis Simulator , which does such a good job of representing the relation between power and accuracy. Now, the mechanic in Tennis World Tour 2 kind of just seems like a simplistic mini-game with too little nuance to be very realistic.

tennis world tour 2 roster update

I was hoping the move to next-gen consoles would lead to AI opponents being a little better than they were before, but it’s just not the case. The performance of CPU players can be all over the map it seems, even during the course of a single match. On one hand, they have zero problems returning every single high-speed serve you send their way and hitting impossible cross-court winners. On the other hand, they’ll let shots go by them without even moving or hit routine shots out.

Creation Suite

tennis world tour 2 roster update

Along those same lines, the thought would be that a next-gen upgrade might also translate to an improvement in the game’s thin creation suite. However, nothing major has changed here. There remains no ability to sculpt and refine the features of your created player in the small ways that we’ve come to expect from sports games. Instead, you’re left with mixing and matching different eyes and mouths like you were creating some sort of tennis-playing Potato Head.

Bottom Line

tennis world tour 2 roster update

This is not the kind of next-gen upgrade that completely transforms the experience and makes you seriously have to re-assess what you thought about it on last-gen consoles. But it does further refine a flawed game to the point that Tennis World Tour 2 is at least getting closer to providing a fun and rewarding experience — and an accurate representation of tennis.

In particular, the career mode now provides a more enjoyable journey. Creating players and guiding them from being newbies with little to no skills to seasoned veterans who are ready to take on some of the bigger names on the tour works well here. The fact that you can disable the game’s misguided card bonuses system eliminates an annoying arcade element, and the improved next-gen presentation allows you to get even closer to feeling like you’re out there on the court as you progress through real events like the new ATP Cup.

But even though the developers have made some real strides since the frustrating release of the original Tennis World Tour , there’s still a lot of work to do yet. In subsequent patches to the game (and inevitably perhaps its sequel), the developers should focus now on making the gameplay a little more fluid, and the AI a little more consistent. It would be easier to overlook the shortcomings of a tennis game if some of its biggest issues weren’t occurring when you’re actually playing tennis.
