Gifu Tour Guide - Akiko W.

Hello! My name is Akiko from Gifu prefecture. I am a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter. I like going out with my family, talking with my friends over coffee at a cozy cafe, reading books, baking bread and cake when I have time. I passed the national tour guide test in 2017 and have worked as a guide since then. I have guided in Gifu city, Seki city, Takayama city, Shirakawago , Mino city and Nagoya city. I have lived in Gifu for more than forty years. Gifu prefecture is rich in nature so you can enjoy the rural atmosphere. Gifu city has a beautiful river 'Nagara river' and Mt.Kinka which has Gifu castle on the top. You can go up the mountain on foot or use a ropeway. The view from Gifu castle is so fantastic. At the foot of the mountain , there are many places to visit such as parks, a temple having a big image of Buddha, and a street preserving the historic atmosphere. At Nagara River, you can enjoy seeing a traditional way of fishing ‘cormorant fishing’ which is thought to have started 1300 years ago. Many cafes have unique service called 'morning service' in Gifu along with Aichi In the morning (until about ten thirty or eleven) when you order a cup of tea or coffee, they serve toast and salad ! Near Gifu park , you can find a nice Japanese style cafe where you enjoy good coffee and seeing a Japanese style garden. Seki city is a small city but so famous for its cutlery. At Japanese sword museum in Seki, you can see authentic Japanese swords! Mino city next to Seki city is well known for its hand made Japanese paper 'Hon minoshi' designated as intangible cultural asset by UNESCO . Until recently it was not easy to guide guests because of COVID-19 pandemic; however the situation is getting better. Some strict rules about COVID-19 have been lifted. Please visit Gifu. I am looking forward to seeing you. Please feel free to ask me when you need information about Gifu. Thank you for reading my introduction.

Fukuoka Tour Guide - Kazue I.

Hi! I am Kazue. I am from Fukuoka and live in the central city. I spent almost 20 years traveling around the world as a cabin attendant. Meeting different people, different cultures and eating local food were best things in my career. This experience definitely widened my perspective and will help me in some way when I work as a guide. Since I spent half my life outside of Japan, I noticed our culture and traditions are very unique and became more interested in historical sites in Japan. For my personal life, I am a mom of twins. It is still a hard work but I am enjoying a lot with them. We take them around Kyushu whenever possible for their fun and experience. We all love traveling after all. I am looking forward to showing you around our hometown soon!

Kyoto Tour Guide - Masayuki I.

Masayuki I.

My name is masayuki currently living in kyoto. everyone casually calls me massy. i grew up in a bilingual ( english / japanese ) background. i am a new entry in here, but i am already very well experienced in hosting and guiding. i like to explore things to discover all the hidden beauties and treasures off the beaten path and share with others. i would only show you to the places you really need a guide with no information in english. if you are interested in things truly unique known only to some locals, i am the one. i like to explore in nature and show my footsteps to everyone to discover new hidden ground. it is almost my natural instinct to avoid crowd. i am not into ordinary tourism of kyoto because i don't want to be another one of them doing the same guide in kyoto. i want to show you to a true state of sacred and beauty which is unharmed by commercialization and over-tourism. my itinerary cuts off overrated attractions from the view point of a local. in kyoto i mostly write about places never been introduced in english. i am not a licensed tour guide interpreter, but i have different field of knowledge to introduce things. i am more of an english-hosting guide without strict business manner. i am a professional in writing introduction pages mainly for north parts of kyoto in english. the courses are my own creation since i am the original one to write in english. i am a very open and friendly person who can communicate in english nearly as good as a native speaker. i was in canada and u.s. i once took a leading role of an international community as well as being an english teacher. my wife is from ukraine often assisting me to host my guests.                                                                                                                                  , popular japan private tours.

Full Day Tour Exploring Hiroshima

“ A memorable tour of Miyajima Island ”

Thank you Mayumi for such a professional and informative tour. All the information you gave us was not in the guide books and the tour was a highlight of our first trip to Japan. Mayumi met us at the cruise terminal at 1.30, and took us to the station to get the train to the ferry terminal. On the island we saw the Tori gate, Itsukushima Shrine, Daishoin temple, the pagoda, temple of 1000 tatami mats, 500 miniature Buddhas in red hats lining our path and many features of each. We bought some maple cakes, a local specialty and ate them with ocha (tea) and looked at the shops before getting back to the ship at 6pm. Miyajima Island is a special place and well worth a visit with a local guide like Mayumi.

Private Tour Guides Are a Godsend!

Whether you are an experienced traveler or a first-timer, private tour guides can really be a Godsend. The most reliable way to find yourself an excellent licensed private guide is RIGHT HERE!

All licensed guides listed here have been verified and have had years of guiding experience. Check the reviews of licensed private tour guides of your travel destination and we assure you that you will find a perfect licensed private guide to make your journey a lifetime experience.     Read More >>

Reasons People Hire a Private Tour Guide

  • Not Having Too Much Time  Let’s say you are at the end of a business trip and have a few hours to spare before boarding your plane, or as a leisure traveler you want to maximize a long layover, or maybe you are on a cruise visiting ports but don’t want to follow the hordes coming off the ship to places, not in your interest. You will discover that hiring a local licensed private tour guide is an incredibly smart and convenient way to make the most of your time.
  • Visiting Places Considered Dangerous, Historical, or Extremely Popular If the place of your interest happens to be a bit dangerous or chaotic, a local licensed private guide knows where to skip, what to avoid, when to stop or leave, and how to keep you safe while introducing you to the fun the place has to offer. In the case of an extremely popular spot, your private licensed guide guarantees you a great time by choosing the right hours, the lower prices, and the suitable transportation to visit places of your interests. Also, many places of historical, cultural or religious importance require that an official tour guide conducts the tour. For example, in Vatican City, your licensed guide is also an official Vatican tour guide whose experience and vast knowledge immerses you in the rich history and the magnificence of Vatican.
  • Expecting a Potential Language Barrier It can be very frustrating not able to communicate with people in the places of your visit. Therefore, a local private tour guide will not only be guiding you around but also be your translator. You will be surprised how fun it can be with you on one side and the locals on the other while your guide translates Q&A back and forth.
  • On Hiking, Adventure, or a Nature Trip Even if you are an expert in these activities, it's still a good idea to hire a local private tour guide to help you navigate an unfamiliar place, to point you to things that uninformed eyes don't see, or to keep you out of the way of poisonous animals and plants.
  • Wanting a Temporary Companion or Having Someone Drive You Sometimes when you are on a long trip alone, you might feel to have someone to talk to. What better than the companionship of a local licensed guide? No matter how long your stay is, he/she shows you around, tells you stories of the locals, gives you company, or drives for you as he/she introduces the history and the beauty of places you wish to visit.
  • Traveling With Elders or Small Kids Yes, it’s family time together. It will be fun and enjoyable! But, it can be tiring as well. Let a local licensed private tour guide take care of the details and hassles to ensure you have a quality time with your family on the road. Your guide provides a safe and comfortable transportation to places according to your preferences and pace.

Advantages of Having a Licensed Private Guide

Time-saving: No matter how long your stay is, having your private tour guide will assure that you never waste time getting lost or missing your flight while having great fun.

Hassle-free: Your tour will be absolutely hassle-free if you have a licensed private tour guide handling all the bookings, purchasing tickets to museums/palaces, arranging transportation or extra cares for special needs.

Flexible: Based on your schedule and interests, you will have the flexibility to tailor the tour and add activities. During the trip from the conversation, your licensed private tour guide can get a good sense of your personality and may recommend you something that will add extra flavour to your tour.

First-hand insider information: Your private tour guide gives you a lot of insider information that you otherwise wouldn’t get if you visited places by yourself. He or she has a lot of stories, anecdotes, and history to impart.

Worth every penny spent: When you factor in the one-on-one attention, individuality, privateness, flexibility, and expertise you will receive, touring with a licensed private tour guide is actually much cheaper than traveling by yourself.

Sources of Getting a Local Licensed Private Tour Guide

  • As with most things, finding a right private tour guide is the key!
  • If you want a list of local guides, go to the local tourism offices. But, it is just a list.
  • Guidebooks sometimes do add some listing of guides as a reference. But, it is just a reference.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT VINA BALI TOUR

I had the pleasure to have Vina as my personal guide for 4 days while I was visiting Bali to take pictures, and I have to say I couldn’t have asked for a better guide for my first time on the island... riding with her was a pleasure, never a boring moment, she has an amazing character sure to entertain you for the entire journey. She’s very knowledgeable about every aspect of Bali, history, people, traditions and more, with her you will definitely have the chance to visit even the most hidden trekking routes or places as she’s an avid explorer and knows all the small and hidden crevices of Bali. Always with your best interest in mind making sure you are the priority, be it for simple sightseeing or seeking adventure!

 alt=

Since 2016, I have frequently traveled to Bali, Indonesia, and have stayed for extended periods of time, visiting some of the most beautiful places in Indonesia. During this period, I have been fortunate to meet Ms. Vina, who has virtually acted as my personal assistant and tour guide each time I visited Bali. She has guided me in finding my ideal place of residence, arranged multiple large gatherings for me, and planned travels to virtually all points of interest in Bali and its surrounding islands. Additionally, she has arranged and accompanied me on travels to some of the most interesting, historical, cultural, and scenic places in Java, Sulawesi, Papua, and East Nusa Tenggara. She has been a highly reliable, knowledgeable, travel-savvy professional, with an excellent command of English and Bahasa Indonesia languages in conversation and in writing. I would never have been able to travel to some of these remote areas without her active participation and guidance.

Not only has she been an asset to me as a tour guide, but she has also assisted me with virtually all my administrative needs during my stays in Bali, as she is well familiar with how things can quickly get done.

I recently had two very insightful and enjoyable days with Vina in Bali.

I believe she must be one of the very few female tour guides in Bali, and what she offers is certainly unique. When I arrived in Ubud for the first time, I had done a bit of research on Google, but I didn't have a clear plan on where to go or what to do. I was determined to experience the authentic Bali, avoiding the touristy places recommended by the many drivers who approached me on the street.

When I met Vina, she asked me to fill out a form with a few questions about my interests and what I wanted to see and experience during my short stay. After a brief discussion, she suggested a few places, and off we went. I had an amazing day as she took me to many places I would never have discovered on my own, including some waterfalls and beautiful natural spots. Most of the time, we were the only people there. Vina has a natural way of connecting with the local Balinese people, and she is very friendly, allowing us to engage with many locals and hear their stories. She also has a strong connection with children who are drawn to her fun-loving nature.

Vina possesses extensive knowledge about food and the best places to eat. I never had to consult TripAdvisor; I simply relied on her recommendations. She also knew the best places to shop for the best value and the items I was looking for. On another day, we visited a couple of museums and spoke with historians, and she helped with translations (her English is excellent), giving me a deep understanding of the fascinating history. She led us down some beautiful backroads and into villages to witness the traditional Balinese way of life, enriching the experience with captivating stories about Balinese culture that you won't find in guidebooks.

I highly recommend Vina if you want to make the most of your time in Bali and truly enjoy your stay. I found her fees very reasonable for the value she provides, and I will definitely hire her again when I return to Bali, this time for a longer visit!

The best guide in Bali. She really loves her job. She has already taken me to several places in Bali and she does it with passion. Unforgettable experiences.

Highly recommended.

I met Vina in May 2022 and had two fantastic excursions. Compared to the other guides, she has the particularity of finding rare beautiful locations outside the standard circuits and offering unique experiences both in contact with nature and with the local people. I would recommend everyone to book tours with Vina if you are in Bali as you will not be disappointed at all.

Vina is in my opinion one of the best guides I've come across in Bali. She is a very empathetic person towards customers and is always ready to give her best in every situation !!! She knows the island and its people very well and is fluent in several languages. Taking a tour with this wonderful guide will not only mean getting to know a beautiful place with a rich culture, but it will be an extremely pleasant experience. I strongly recommend it to everyone who likes to meet real people and fabulous places!!!

I have been in Ubud and Vina is a very good guide to explore Bali. Thank you for the great service.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best shopping, best nightlife, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, neighborhoods to visit, how to get around.

Evgeniya Vlasova/Travel + Leisure

Capital of Tuscany, cradle of the Renaissance, and one of Italy’s most popular destinations, Florence needs little introduction. A World’s Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree , it consistently ranks as one of Travel + Leisure readers’ favorite cities thanks to its rich history, artistic treasures, and delicious food and wine, much of which comes from the nearby hills of Chianti and Montalcino. Florence is a must-visit destination for a rich cultural immersion in Italian art and history.

Though the historic center is relatively compact, it’s crammed with museums containing priceless works of art, churches that are architectural masterpieces, restaurants, bars, and shops selling everything from gastronomic specialties to handmade leather goods and jewelry. In fact, Florence has always been a haven for artisans practicing traditional crafts, and today, you can still find artisan-made goods if you know where to look.

It would take years to see and do everything Florence has to offer, which is why we’ve enlisted the help of local expert Mary Gray , the editor-in-chief of Italy magazine who has lived in Florence for more than a decade. “The things that drew me here were the same things that draw all visitors and students here, but what’s kept me here has evolved over the years,” she says. “The city is gloriously walkable and compact while having many of the cultural offerings of a much larger and more metropolitan place.”

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • The Helvetia & Bristol Firenze is the city’s oldest luxury hotel, and after a top-to-bottom renovation, it’s more glamorous than ever.
  • The Uffizi Gallery contains some of the greatest works of art ever created.
  • La Scuola del Cuoio carries on Florence’s historic leather-making tradition and is the perfect place to buy a high-quality artisan bag.
  • A sunset aperitivo at La Terrazza at the Hotel Continentale is the perfect segue into a lovely evening in Florence.
  • When in Florence, you must try the bistecca alla Fiorentina; the best place to get it is Regina Bistecca.

The St. Regis Florence

Voted the number one hotel in Florence in the 2023 World’s Best Awards , this opulent grand dame has pride of place along the Arno River. Contemporary art curated by Liquid Art System adds a touch of modernity to the otherwise classic decor. Don’t miss an aperitivo in the Winter Garden.

Helvetia & Bristol Firenze

With a score of 94.75, Florence’s oldest luxury hotel closely follows the St. Regis in the 2023 World’s Best Awards. A major renovation in 2019 restored this member of the Leading Hotels of the World to its original glory, adding a soothing spa and outpost of Cibrèo restaurant and café. “I love to go to the spa at the Helvetia & Bristol when I’m in the mood to give myself the ‘staycation’ treatment,” Gray says.

Hotel Savoy, a Rocco Forte Hotel

The Rocco Forte Hotels group is known for impeccable design and service, and the Hotel Savoy certainly fulfills those promises, earning it a spot as the third-best hotel in Florence in the 2023 World’s Best Awards. Standout details include colorful textiles by Laudomia Pucci, menus designed by lauded chef Fulvio Pierangelini, and views of the Duomo.

Four Seasons Hotel Firenze

Courtesy of Four Seasons

More like an urban resort than a city hotel, the Four Seasons Firenze occupies the historic Palazzo della Gherardesca and is home to Florence's most extensive private garden. Original frescoes and period furnishings immerse guests in Renaissance splendor, and a meal at the Michelin-starred Il Palagio is a feast for the senses. No wonder this hotel ranked the fourth best in Florence in the 2023 World’s Best Awards.

Owned by the noble Ginori family, who once used the building as the headquarters of their world-famous ceramics production, Casa G. is a 15-room boutique hotel. A more affordable alternative to the city’s luxury five-star hotels, it offers style at prices that won’t break the bank.

Admire incredible art at the Uffizi Gallery

Florence is packed full of museums, but if you only go to one, make it the Uffizi Galleries , which contains a collection from the 13th to the 20th century. Must-see paintings include Botticelli’s Birth of Venus , Raphael’s Madonna of the Goldfinch , and Caravaggio’s Bacchus .

Learn about Brunelleschi’s masterpiece at the Opera del Duomo Museum

The Duomo is Florence's most recognizable landmark with its symbolic red terracotta tiled roof and Gothic facade. However, many of the great artworks created for it now reside in the nearby Opera del Duomo Museum . “This is definitely one of the most spectacular museums in the city and maybe in all of Italy,” Gray says. “I always tell visitors that if they’re deciding between going inside the cathedral or going inside the museum, there’s no contest.”

Visit the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella

With a history that stretches back to 1221, this is considered the world’s oldest pharmacy , where Dominican friars produced medicinal tinctures and perfumes. It was the official perfumer of Catherine de’ Medici and officially opened its doors to the public in 1542. The brand now sells its perfumes worldwide, but the original shop was turned into a sort of museum worth a visit.

Stroll through the Boboli and Bardini Gardens

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

Behind Palazzo Pitti, the Medicis’ royal palace, the Boboli Gardens are the archetype of the classic Renaissance Italian gardens, with fountains, grottoes, and statues. The same ticket will grant you access to the Gardens of the Villa Bardini, which has incredible views of Florence and, in the spring, wisteria-covered pergolas.

Explore Markets like the Mercato Centrale and the Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio

Though the stalls outside the Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo mainly sell fake leather goods and cheap souvenirs, the actual market is worth visiting. On the ground floor, vendors sell produce, meat, cheeses, fish, and other groceries, while the upper floor has been turned into an upscale food hall. The Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio is a “great convergence point in the city for visitors and residents,” according to Gray. There’s also a flea market nearby in Largo Annigoni.

 Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images

La Scuola del Cuoio

Established post-World War II as a way to help orphans learn a trade, the Scuola del Cuoio still teaches students the art of leather-making. You can tour the school, learn about the process, and then buy original bags, wallets, belts, and other leather items.

Scarpelli Mosaici

Scarpelli Mosaici is one of the few remaining workshops that still makes mosaics and inlaid marble items the traditional way. Head to the shop near the Duomo to watch the artisans at work and buy a unique piece. They also work on commissions to make inlaid marble tables and other beautiful objects.

Marina Calamai

“ I’ve always been super inspired by Marina Calamai , who I think of as a true contemporary Renaissance woman,” Gray says about this jeweler and artist. “Her hands are in a ton of different artistic initiatives and green projects around Florence and the greater metropolitan area, but window-shopping her jewelry and art studio on Via Santo Spirito is a regular part of my daily route; I always love seeing what she’s come up with.”

Alberto Cozzi Rilegatore

Gray recommends this family-run shop opened in 1908, specializing in bookbinding, paper marbling, and the restoration of antique books. Stop by one of their shops — located on Via del Parione and Via Sant’Agostino — to pick up some stationary, a leather-bound journal, or have a book repaired.

Pegna dal 1860

“ Pegna is where I go in a pinch when I need to pick up travel-friendly non-perishables to take back to the ‘foodies’ among my stateside family and friends,” Gray notes. “Though it’s a historic local grocery, I do love that there is a range of products sourced from all over Italy, like capers from Pantelleria and Krumiri Rossi from Piedmont.”

Peter Adams/Getty Images

La Terrazza at the Hotel Continentale

It should come as no surprise that one of the best rooftop bars in Florence is run by the Ferragamo family. Book in advance if you want a spot at this small al fresco bar overlooking the Arno River. It’s incredibly atmospheric for a sunset aperitivo.

Companion Dolceamaro Bar at 25Hours Hotel Piazza San Paolino

Gray likes the 25Hours Hotel for its variety of nightlife options, which includes the lobby lounge, the courtyard, and the intimate Companion Dolceamaro Bar . It has a wide selection of bitters, vermouths, and cocktails, but the most popular option is the Negroni, which has several versions.

Vineria Sonora

“In Florence in recent years, it’s felt like a lot of venues have tamped down their personalities or strayed from their niches to appeal to more people or just to become more Instagrammable,” Gay says. “I love that Vineria Sonora stubbornly embraces doing its own thing, focusing on fun music and offbeat wines from small, independent producers. It’s perfect for pre-dinner or nightcap, and I love that it draws such a mix of demographics and ages.”

Chelsea Loren/Travel + Leisure

Alla Vecchia Bettola

“There’s definitely more to Florentine dining than steak, but when I’m craving one now and then, this is where I go,” Gray says about this no-frills trattoria with tables crammed together and stools instead of chairs. “I love sitting elbow-to-elbow and swilling back the house wine, but this admittedly isn’t the best place to go if you need to have a deep conversation over dinner —  you’re lucky if you can hear your seatmate over the ruckus!”

Regina Bistecca

For bistecca alla fiorentina and other Tuscan classics, including pillowy ricotta and spinach gnudi, in a more refined but still laid-back atmosphere, head to this lovely restaurant near the Duomo. The building used to be an antiquarian bookshop with soaring arches and the owners have kept the charming vintage vibes.

Borgo San Jacopo

For an unforgettable fine dining experience, book a table at this Michelin-starred restaurant inside the Lungarno Hotel, which is part of the Ferragamo family’s empire. The nautical-inspired interiors might make you feel like you’re on a yacht floating on the Arno as you savor one of Chef Claudio Mengoni’s exquisite tasting menus.

Trattoria Cammillo

“When one of my best friends who traded in Florence for London a few years ago comes back to town for visits we always love to make a splashy Saturday of it and have a special-occasion lunch at Cammillo . It’s a step up in price point from your average shabby-chic trattoria, but still has a soulful, neighborhood feel, which I love,” Gray says.

The Cibrèo family of restaurants encompasses five locations in Florence. There’s the restaurant, the trattoria, the café, the Tuscan-Oriental fusion spot, and a new outpost inside the Helvetia & Bristol Hotel. When Gray used to teach travel writing to university students, she sometimes brought them to Cibrèo Caffè. “This is still one of my favorite ways to spend a special morning out in Florence,” she maintains.

Evgeniya Vlasova/Travel + Leisure

The best time to visit Florence for fewer crowds is November through March. Summer is hot and crowded. Gray says, “A real ‘low season’ in Florence isn’t much of a thing anymore.” She loves January and February but posits that March is an excellent middle ground because the weather is good, the local event scene tends to pick up after a winter hiatus, and the crowds usually swell around Easter.

Easter is a significant celebration throughout Italy, and in Florence, the festivities include the Scoppio del Carro, in which a wooden cart pulled by flower-adorned oxen explodes directly in front of the Duomo. Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is one of Italy’s oldest music festivals. It typically starts mid-April and runs through mid-June, with classical music concerts, operas, and other performances. The city also celebrates its patron saint, St. John the Baptist, on June 24 with a game of Calcio Storico, a mix of rugby, soccer, and wrestling, with participants wearing 16th-century costumes.

Florence is served by the Amerigo Vespucci Airport, which is about half an hour from the city center. It’s also easy to get to Florence by train from elsewhere in Italy. High-speed Frecciarossa trains run frequently from major cities like Rome, Milan, Bologna, and Venice. The Frecciarossa takes about 90 minutes from Rome, two hours from Milan, 40 minutes from Bologna, and a little more than two hours from Venice. The central train station is Firenze Santa Maria Novella.

Duomo: Also known as San Giovanni, the part of the centro storico that covers the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria is the very heart of the city. This area is packed with sites, including the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Repubblica, and the banks of the Arno.

Evgeniya Vlasova /Travel + Leisure

Santa Croce: Just east of the Duomo, Santa Croce is known for the Basilica di Santa Croce, which contains incredible frescoes by Giotto and the tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo. The neighborhood is home to the Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio, which, according to Gray, is a hidden gem.

Santa Maria Novella: Santa Maria Novella is the neighborhood where you’ll find the train station and basilica of the same name. The western part of the neighborhood beyond the train station is primarily residential, but the area around the basilica is home to some upscale hotels, restaurants, and bars.

San Lorenzo: The small area between the train station and the Duomo is San Lorenzo, the city’s central market district. Beware of the stalls selling fake leather or souvenirs made in China. On the other hand, you’ll find vendors selling fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat on the ground floor. The upper floor houses a food hall selling local specialties like lampredotto (tripe sandwiches) and schiacciata (a Tuscan flatbread).

Oltrarno: Literally ‘across the Arno,’ Oltrarno is a more laid-back, slightly bohemian area. Gray, who has lived in Oltrarno for the entirety of her time in Florence, says, “I’ve watched it change a lot over the past decade-plus; artisan studios and workers’ neighborhood trattorie are being replaced by generic Aperol Spritz spots and run-of-the-mill shops, but if you know where to look (and hint: it’s not where the long lines are), you’ll find Florentine traditions and long-standing independent shops quietly humming on.”

The historic center of Florence is compact and very walkable. Much of it has been pedestrianized or is part of a limited traffic zone. A car is a hindrance rather than a help, but taxis, buses, and trams are available to transport you to or from the airport or train station.

Autolinee Toscane: Autolinee Toscane runs the buses and trams that connect Florence with the greater metropolitan area. Tickets cost 1.70 euros if you buy them in advance at ticket offices or ticket machines or 3 euros if you buy them on board.

Taxi: There are two taxi companies in Florence: Taxi4242 and Taxi4390 . A trip to or from the airport costs a flat rate of 22 euros (plus possible surcharges for luggage), but usually, fares are calculated based on the time and distance traveled. Use the itTaxi app to hail a taxi.

Imagine your ideal vacation. Maybe you’re relaxing under a palm tree on a white sandy beach or backpacking through rugged mountains featuring breathtaking views. Or maybe you’re like a growing number of travelers who enjoy experiencing a new culture through unique dining experiences and locally sourced ingredients.

Picture unwinding in a private villa in the Napa Valley vineyards, partaking in private tastings, and indulging in local Meyer lemons and Dungeness crab. Food can serve as a powerful lens, allowing us to more fully experience new destinations, which is one reason food tourism is a growing trend.

According to some private-sector research, a majority of travelers research restaurants before heading out on vacation . But some travelers take it a step further. A recent report by the World Travel Association (WFTA) found that 34% of travelers select their destination based on food .

This growing interest in connecting travel and the culinary world raises the questions: What is food tourism and what careers exist in the industry?

What Is Food Tourism?

What are some examples of food tourism.

  • Traveling to New Orleans to try authentic dishes and drinks like Creole Jambalaya, beignets, and a hurricane cocktail
  • Visiting Italy, to indulge in pizza, pasta, and gelato the way it was meant to taste
  • Staying in Spain, to experience heritage recipes for paella, tapas, and churros
  • Venturing over to Japan, to experience sushi, ramen, and tempura made by locals

Tourists enjoy interacting with chefs as their meals are prepared.

Travelers are looking to learn more about the regions they travel to through food experiences such as farm-to-table tours and restaurants, trips through local markets, and interacting with the chef as their food is prepared. They’re looking for local flavors and specialties they can’t find anywhere else, which is creating unique opportunities for creative chefs.

Food tourism experiences can also help preserve traditional cooking methods and regional cuisines, ensuring their legacy lives on for future generations. It’s a win-win situation for locals and travelers alike.

Why Is Food Tourism so Popular?

While the term “foodie” arrived on the food scene in the 1980s, it began to gain steam in the 1990s when food television grew in popularity. The foodie community began to connect even more once the internet and social media made it easier to share and follow each others’ experiences and the works of celebrity chefs .

Food truck worker passing a bowl to a customer through the window as another customer holds their bowl ready to eat.

Food trucks grew in popularity along with the foodie scene.

In fact, the majority of Millennials and Gen Z would rather spend their money on experiences like traveling instead of saving for the future. In addition, they have become more interested in experiencing authentic culture as they travel instead of wanting to see landmarks or visit popular theme parks.

The younger generations want to move past sightseeing and see how the locals are living—and eating. Why visit a predictable amusement park when you could take a small catamaran to an island off the coast of Mexico where you can eat homemade tortillas prepared by the locals?

And it doesn’t appear to be a fading trend. The food tourism market is strong and expected to continue growing by 15.20% through 2033. With this in mind, it brings new and innovative opportunities for chefs looking to put a different spin on their careers.

Culinary Tourism Creates Exciting Career Opportunities

The increasing popularity of culinary tourism is creating unique opportunities for both chefs and food influencers . There are many ways you can combine your passion for food, culinary experiences, travel, or your local area into money-making opportunities.

Opportunities for Those Who Love to Travel

Do you want to see the world? Or do you have a favorite destination that you’d love to live in long-term or temporarily? There are many opportunities around the world for chefs and others passionate about cuisine in the food tourism industry. If you want to be part of it, here are some ideas for how you can combine your career and hobbies:

1. Partner with Tour Companies

You can partner with travel agencies and tour operators to create one-of-a-kind experiences for travelers. This could include taking groups to local farms and markets to purchase ingredients and educating them on the significance of the ingredients in the local culture throughout history. Escoffier’s Farm To Table Experience offers great examples of how local farming can influence culinary culture.

Customers sort through baskets of peppers, greens, and oranges at a farmer’s market near a chalkboard sign that says, “Buy Local!”

Food tourists are interested in learning more about the local food scene, including where to source ingredients, like the farmer’s market.

2. Cook for Guests as a Private Chef on a Yacht

Create a luxurious dining experience by working as a private chef on a yacht. You can personalize multi-course meals for private clients or charter guests while incorporating local ingredients from exotic destinations. You get the bonus of stunning ocean views day and night. Several professional organizations exist that can help you on your personal chef journey, including the United States Personal Chef Association and the American Personal & Private Chef Association (founded by friend of Escoffier Candy Wallace).

3. Join Adventure Groups as an Expedition Chef

If you enjoy trekking through the mountains, join an adventure tour company like Overland Cookery . You can prepare meals for hikers and campers throughout their journey. Or, you could prepare delicious meals for travelers to return to after an adventurous day of spotting animals on a South African safari. Get creative thinking about your favorite place to travel and how you could be a part of creating an unforgettable food experience for others.

4. Hit the Road as a Food Influencer

Professional chefs have a unique voice and experience to add to the world of food influencers. If you enjoy travel, you could spend your time traveling while learning about and sharing food experiences with others online. You can help foodies plan their next vacation by covering the best food to try and experiences to participate in throughout the world.

The Food Entrepreneurship Courses at Escoffier include classes in social media content development, food blogging, and hospitality marketing that can help you take the next step.

5. Provide Services as a Restaurant Consultant

Lend your culinary knowledge and experience to restaurants around the world. You can assist restaurants in menu development, improved food quality, and staff training. Become known as the expert in a specific culinary area and travel to teach others how they can do the same. Explore ways a degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Operations Management can help.

Opportunities for Those Who Want to Stay Local

You don’t have to travel to work in and support the world of culinary tourism if you want to stay close to home. There are plenty of opportunities, including the following, for chefs looking to stay local.

1. Host Cooking Classes

Host cooking classes to teach tourists about local culinary techniques and regional dishes. Educate participants on the differences in your local ingredients. Incorporate pieces of local history and storytelling throughout the experience to engage tourists and help them learn more about your area and culture.

2. Participate in Food Festivals

Food festivals , such as the South Beach Wine & Food Festival and Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, are popular among foodies. Join a festival in your area or partner with other food experts to start a food festival to attract tourists. You can provide culinary demonstrations to showcase your skills and promote your region’s culinary heritage.

3. Work as a Private Chef

With the help of companies like Airbnb, many travelers enjoy staying at a house instead of a hotel or resort while traveling. You can help them enjoy an authentic experience by working as a private chef for their trip. You can prepare a lavish spread using local ingredients while customizing the menu for specific travelers.

Private chefs can help tourists enjoy authentic cuisine at every meal.

4. Food Tour Guide

Help take travelers past the tourist hotspots to find the best authentic dishes and culinary experiences the locals love in your city. Lead groups to the best restaurants, sharing what dishes will meet their needs. Take them on behind-the-scenes tours of the restaurants or create experiences where they can meet the Executive Chef.

5. Develop Local Food Tourism Opportunities

With the increase in food tourism, cities are working to create new experiences to help draw tourists. There are many ways you can partner with local government and business owners to put your city on the food tourism map. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Create themed menus for restaurants in your local area.
  • Collaborate with local producers, from farmers to cheesemakers and artisanal bakers, to source fresh local ingredients for your dishes.
  • Offer special tasting events featuring local ingredients and specialties.
  • Work as a food tourism advocate. Connect with other local chefs, restaurants, and food businesses to bring new culinary offerings to your area.

The food tourism industry is wide open. Look for ways to pair your culinary skills with other passions to create one-of-a-kind experiences for travelers from near and far.

Providing unique culinary experiences and behind-the-scenes experiences can draw tourists.

If the food tourism industry is calling your name, you can set yourself apart from other chefs by developing additional skills that will help you serve in these unique career opportunities.

Non-Culinary Skills for Success in Food Tourism

Food tourism is about more than just local ingredients and cooking. Outside of your culinary skills, the following skills can help you succeed in a career in the culinary tourism industry:

  • Storytelling Skills : Creating the authentic experience tourists are looking for includes good communication skills and being a captivating storyteller. Share local heritage and cultural narratives throughout the culinary experience. Engage with people to share your local knowledge and answer their questions to create a personalized experience.
  • Business Acumen : Understanding business principles such as marketing and promotion can help you attract customers to your culinary experience while understanding the numbers behind the business will help you price your offerings right.
  • Cultural sensitivity : Food is deeply connected with local culture, and having cultural sensitivity helps you communicate local and historical traditions in a meaningful way.

Combining these skills can help you create one-of-a-kind experiences for travelers while establishing yourself in a career that you can enjoy personally and professionally. If you’re interested in starting your own business in the food tourism industry, explore how a food entrepreneurship program can help you get started.

The Outdoor Enthusiast’s Guide to Charlotte

A local’s tips for experiencing the adventurous side of the Queen City

Image

For one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, Charlotte, North Carolina, has an impressive outdoor scene that offers everything from urban parks and greenways to wild river adventures and hiking and biking trails galore. Outside tapped John Searby, executive director of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation and Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, for a local’s take on the best ways to enjoy Charlotte’s outdoor scene. Here are Searby’s recommendations in his own words.

Water Adventures

If you’re new to adrenaline-pumping watersports, the U.S. National Whitewater Center is one of the best places in the entire country to explore many facets of the outdoor lifestyle. The center offers folks the chance to explore a variety of experiences in a more programmed and controlled space.

Kayaking in Charlotte

On the flip side, if you want to get away from it all and be totally self-sufficient, plan a paddling adventure on the South Fork Catawba River Corridor , just outside of Charlotte. The South Fork River is the largest tributary of the Catawba River and runs through several early 1900s mill villages. After the mass exodus of textile mills, these villages leaned into ecotourism and embraced the river as a destination. The South Fork River is part of an eight-mile blueway paddle trail that has no motorized boat access and is home to several kayak launch areas, conserved properties, and parks. The river flows through the downtowns of two communities and even has Class 1-2 rapids. The towns along the South Fork—Lowell, McAdenville, Cramerton, and Belmont—all have great outdoor recreation options. Hop on the river for just a few hours, or link together multiple stretches for a full weekend of paddling. Being able to jump in and out of your boat to grab a coffee, lunch, beer, or snack makes the South Fork Corridor a great outdoor enthusiast’s day trip.

Trail Adventures

You don’t have to drive far from Uptown, Charlotte’s city center, to find amazing access to outdoor recreation. About an hour from the city, Crowders Mountain State Park offers access to the 15.8-mile Ridgeline Trail, primitive campsites, and hike-in bouldering areas. Within Mecklenburg County, the 1,400-acre Latta Nature Preserve , on the banks of Mountain Island Lake, features 13 miles of trails, a raptor center where you can get nose to beak with birds of prey, and an interactive science center. Visitors can also access the lake from multiple places in the park. Within a few minutes of the park’s gates, you can return to the “real world” and find restaurants, bars, and accommodations.

Mountain Biking

For mountain bike trails, check out the Tarheel Trailblazers . This local mountain bike community is dedicated to building trails in the region. They have a great mix of trails in municipal parks and private property that really lends itself to accessibility.

A Blend of Nature and Big-City Vibes

The Cross Charlotte Trail , especially the Little Sugar Creek Greenway segment, is one of the most unique outdoor experiences in the city. This greenway runs from the South Carolina state line all the way to Cabarrus County and goes right through the heart of Charlotte. Along the route, you’ll find numerous parks, wetlands, educational opportunities, and community gathering spots around the Little Sugar Creek stream restoration project. There is also an abundance of singletrack bypass areas, bike parks, and the BYT (Backyard Trails), where you can get your mountain bike or trail running fix along the route. As you cross Charlotte on the trail, you also go through Uptown, NoDa (Charlotte’s art district), and Charlotte’s University area, so there are plenty of opportunities to hop off the trail and experience great food, culture, art, and history. It is really an awesome experience for anyone, no matter what you like.

Just outside of the city, the Anne Springs Close Greenway is one of the most amazing outdoor oases in the region. This 2,100-acre preserve is less than 30 minutes from Uptown and features more than 36 miles of trails for hikers, bikers, trail runners, and equestrians. The park also offers kayaking on a private lake and multiple food and beverage options on-site.

Little Sugar Creek Greenway

Post-Adventure Hangouts

There are literally dozens of great breweries in Charlotte, and many of them cater to outdoor enthusiasts with outdoor seating areas, close connections to greenways, and dog-friendly spaces. Some of the best include Birdsong Brewing, off Little Sugar Creek Greenway; Sycamore Brewing, by the Charlotte Rail Trail; and Legion Brewing West Morehead, near Stewart Creek Greenway. For multiple food options in an outdoor food hall environment, Camp North End is just six blocks from Uptown and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway.

NoDa Brewing Company

The Trailhead Store at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is one of the newest outdoor hangouts in the region and is quickly becoming a favorite. Open seven days a week, this renovated log cabin offers coffee, wine, and beer, along with grab-and-go food and snacks. From the front porch, you can access nearly seven miles of trails to hike, trail run, and bike through the 380-acre botanical garden. For an artsy hangout, try Confluence South Fork , on the banks of the South Fork River, just 30 minutes from Uptown. This craft beer venue doubles as an art gallery featuring local nature-themed art and live music. Events here help raise money to protect our local waterways. Several adjacent restaurants deliver food to Confluence. Finally, NoDa Brewing Company , located right next to the Cross Charlotte Trail, is the OG of the Charlotte craft beer scene, with the coolest beer garden and taproom around. The brewery has always been a huge supporter of environmental nonprofits and outdoor recreation events, like the Around the Crown 10K .

The Queen City has no shortage of fresh-air pursuits for your next weekend getaway. Raise a glass at one of Charlotte’s buzzing rooftop bars and outdoor patios, discover the city’s thriving culinary scene, and experience unforgettable adventures under the sun. Check out charlottesgotalot.com to start planning your trip to Charlotte.

Renting an Apartment for the First Time: A Guide for New Renters

( Realtor.com )

Renting an Apartment for the First Time: A Guide for New Renters

Being a first-time renter can be challenging. Without experience, it’s difficult to know what to look for or what steps to take to make your search easier. There’s also much to consider, including market trends , rental availability, and the rental application process.

If this is your first time renting an apartment, you’ll want to know a few things before starting. Keep reading for a step-by-step process to find, apply for, and move into your first apartment.

We also provide tips that can help make the process even easier and more budget-friendly.

1. Determine your budget

local tour guide

(Getty Images)

There are two ways you can determine how much rent you can afford :

  • According to Manisha Thakor , director of wealth strategies for women at the BAM Alliance, your rent shouldn’t be more than a fourth of your take-home pay. So, if your monthly income is $3,000, your rent shouldn’t exceed $750 a month.
  • As a rule of thumb, your gross salary should be at least 40 times your rent. So, if you earn $40,000 a year, your rent shouldn’t exceed $1,000 a month.

Ideally, you’ll want to find an apartment that costs less than what your budget allows so you can create an emergency fund. An emergency fund is usually three to six months ’ worth of living expenses.

While landlords don’t require an emergency fund, saving up for a rainy day gives you additional security since you’ll be able to pay your bills even if you lose your job or are thrown some other financial curveball.

Other costs to consider include the following:

  • Security deposit
  • Moving expenses
  • Application fee
  • Buying new furniture
  • Renters insurance

2. Check your credit score

A credit score of 650 or higher will make it easier for you to get approved for a rental since this is the minimum score landlords require. If you don’t know your credit score, you can purchase an online report for a one-time fee.

But what should you do if your credit score is below 650? In that case, you’ll need to find other ways to convince the landlord that you’re responsible and will be able to pay rent on time. Here are some options:

  • Find a roommate:  You can always get a roommate to split the responsibilities and costs. This will give landlords peace of mind since they can rely on two renters for rent payments instead of just one.
  • Get a co-signer: Ask a friend or family member to co-sign. Again, this will reassure landlords since they can fall back on your co-signer if needed. However, becoming a co-signer is a huge responsibility, so ask only people who are financially responsible and comfortable covering rent if you’re unable to.
  • Get references:  Since this is your first apartment, you most likely don’t have references from a previous landlord. Instead, you can provide a professional reference from an employer or manager or a personal reference. This can be one way to provide proof you have the characteristics of a good renter.
  • Provide proof of income: Provide your potential landlord with pay stubs, bank statements, and employment documents to prove you have the funds to cover the rent.
  • Offer to pay more rent in advance: Let the landlords know you’re willing to pay several months’ rent upfront. This will help assure them that you’ll be a responsible renter and financially trustworthy.
  • Increase your security deposit: Offering to double or even triple the requested security deposit amount will give the landlord an incentive to approve your application.
  • Plead your case:  Write a formal letter to the landlord explaining your situation, including the steps you’re taking to improve your credit score.

3. List your requirements

Make a list of the things you’re unwilling to compromise on to make the apartment-hunting process easier. Your requirements might include the following:

  • Neighborhood:  Ideally, you want to live in a safe area close to your work, schools (if you have children), hospitals, and grocery stores. You can find out if your planned neighborhood is safe by using sites like AreaVibes and City Data. Also, keep in mind that some areas might be more expensive than others. For this reason, check out current rental market reports to see which areas are more affordable than others.
  • Amenities: You might require specific amenities, such as a laundry facility, a parking space, an on-site gym, a dishwasher, or air conditioning.
  • Pets:  If you have pets, you’ll likely want a backyard or park nearby. The ground-floor units of some apartment buildings might have a small yard for your pet to use.
  • Your lifestyle:  Consider your lifestyle when searching for an apartment. For example, if you enjoy cycling, check whether the area has trails or cycling routes nearby.

4. Look for an apartment on reputable rental sites

local tour guide

(Realtor.com)

Online rental sites can serve as your primary resource in finding available rentals near you. You can use them to search for apartments that suit your budget and requirements, allowing you to see all the units that are a good fit for you in one place.

For instance, Realtor.com® allows you to filter your apartment search by the following:

  • Neighborhood
  • Property type (such as apartment or condo)
  • Bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Your move-in date
  • Property size
  • Unit features (such as air conditioning and washing machine)
  • Community features (such as parking, gyms, and pools)

Filtering makes it easy to find and shortlist your favorite apartments so you don’t waste time visiting properties that won’t work for you.

5. Create a list of questions to ask

Once you have a shortlist of apartments and have booked tours with landlords or property management companies, you’ll need to get a list of questions ready to ask them on the tour day.

Here are some questions you can ask:

  • Is there free parking? If you own a car or are planning to, make sure to ask how parking works. Rentals can offer public parking or a parking spot for a monthly fee.
  • Who is responsible for covering utilities? These might include electricity, water, sewage, and natural gas.
  • What amenities does the apartment offer? While the apartment’s online listing might include specific amenities, make sure you double-check with the landlord.
  • Are there guest restrictions? If you enjoy hosting get-togethers, find out how many guests you’re allowed to have and whether they’ll have access to amenities like the swimming pool.
  • Who do I call if I need maintenance? Find out how maintenance works and whom to contact when something breaks down or needs repair.
  • Are there pet-friendly areas nearby? This question is good to ask if you own pets, especially dogs.

In addition to having a questions list, consider preparing an apartment inspection list. For example, you might want to test the faucets, internet connection, light switches, window handles, and air conditioning during your tour.

6. Apply for the apartment

Once you’ve found your favorite apartment (or several), start applying. To save time, you can use Avail Renter Profile to simultaneously apply for multiple rental properties without filling out separate application forms. This profile will have all the rental information the landlord needs to approve you.

Your Avail renter profile will also have a shareable link you can give to landlords right away, helping you beat the competition when applying for an apartment in a popular area.

Creating an Avail renter profile is free unless you add a credit check, background check, and eviction report, which involves a one-time fee.

7. Sign the lease

If your rental application is approved and you decide to move ahead with renting the apartment, you will receive a lease. Read through your lease carefully before you sign it. Sometimes, there can be hidden fees, terms, and conditions that could affect you later.

If you have a lawyer, you could even ask this pro to read through the lease to ensure all the terms are fair.

There are three main types of lease agreements when it comes to apartments:

  • Month to month:  This lease agreement automatically renews every month, and the renter or landlord should provide 30 days’ notice to move.
  • Short term: This lease can last anywhere from three to six months. It often doesn’t renew automatically, so you’ll have to renew it before it expires.
  • Long term: This lease usually lasts 12 to 15 months. In the U.S. (and especially with apartment buildings), a 12-month lease is the most popular.

Ensure you’re happy with the lease terms, and know how the renewal process works.

8. Buy apartment furniture

local tour guide

Since this is your first apartment, you’re probably looking for some furniture . Buying expensive furniture can leave a huge dent in your budget and cause unnecessary financial stress during the first few months of living in your new apartment.

Fortunately, there are some budget-friendly ways to furnish your new place. Here are some tips for getting cheap (or even free) furniture:

  • Ask your friends or family members: Family or friends might have furniture they aren’t using. Ask them if they’d be willing to give it to you for free or sell it to you at a low price.
  • Browse garage sales:  You can often find used furniture at garage sales for a steal.
  • Go to budget shops: Used furniture stores offer second-hand furniture in good or even excellent condition.

9. Purchase renters insurance

Keep your belongings safe by getting renters insurance. Renters insurance typically covers the following:

  • Personal property: Renters insurance protects your belongings—including electronics, furniture, and clothing—against unexpected damage or loss. For example, if someone burglarizes your property, your insurer will help you replace the stolen items.
  • Uninhabitable coverage:  This type of coverage can cover the costs of your hotel or living expenses if you can’t live in your apartment due to a covered incident, such as flooding or a broken water pipe.
  • Liability:  This type of coverage can cover medical bills or damaged property if someone gets hurt at your apartment or their property gets damaged.

10. Clean before you move in

Schedule a deep cleaning of your apartment before you move in. You can either do it yourself (saving money in the process) or hire a company or individual to do it for you.

Once the apartment is clean, you can move your belongings into the apartment with the help of a moving company or your family and friends.

3 tips to make the apartment-hunting process easier

Below are some top tips every first-time apartment hunter should know.

1. Start apartment hunting in advance

You don’t want to find an apartment too early and not be able to move in before someone else rents it. You also don’t want to wait too long and not have enough time to find a home that suits your needs.

Search for an apartment within your budget and in your preferred neighborhood 60 days before your move-in date. Then, 30 days before your move-in date, book apartment tours, apply, and sign the lease.

2. Search during the winter

Summer is typically more expensive than winter since many renters prefer moving during hotter months . In fact, most people prefer moving during May, June, July, and August.

This means you’ll likely find an apartment for a lower price during the winter months.

If you’re on a strict budget and want to save as much money as possible, look for an apartment in December, January, February, or March.

3. Beware of rental scams

Searching for an apartment on marketplaces such as Facebook or Craigslist might be tempting. However, if you do this, your chances of running into a scam significantly increase.

Some of the most common scams are fake listings, unavailable landlords, and having to pay a deposit to view a property.

How long does it take to adjust to a new apartment?

Moving into your first apartment is a big step in your life. So, it’ll likely take a couple of weeks or months to start feeling at home.

However, how quickly you adjust will depend on several factors. For example, if you’re moving out of your parents’ house and are extremely close to them, it might take several months for you to become accustomed to your new place.

If you follow the steps outlined above, you won’t have to worry about feeling overwhelmed when searching for your first apartment.

You can start by determining your budget, credit score, and personal apartment requirements. From there, search on reputable listing sites, such as Realtor.com , to find your dream apartment.

The key to better mindfulness may be your public garden

Your local gardens serve as more than a mere showcase of beauty—it can be a sanctuary that offers a deeper connection to the natural world.

Two children walk over stepping stones at the Japanese Friendship Garden.

Visiting a public garden nowadays is more than a stroll through pretty flowers. In recent years, these spaces have embraced a more mindful approach that seeks to deepen visitors’ connection with nature and promote sustainable practices.

“Public gardens are a place of inspiration for what’s in bloom, so you can then go home and buy these flowers locally,” says Debra Prinzing , one of the founders of the slow flower movement and creator of SlowFlowers.com . This online directory connects consumers to florists and designers who use local flowers.

Here are some of the best public gardens to experience this slow flower trend.

What is the slow flower movement?

Some flower enthusiasts may not realize that 90 percent of the cut flowers imported to the U.S. come from South America, where they are picked early and dipped in a chemical for transport and distribution to flower shops and stores across the nation. The slow flower movement fosters a closer connection between consumers and the floral landscape, inspiring a renewed appreciation for the beauty and diversity of locally grown flowers.

“It’s all about sustainability and making sure the flowers we buy are good for humans and for the planet,” says Prinzing. “Many botanical gardens are adding more native plants, and the floral industry is using more native perennials from the local area.” Early in her slow flower quest Prinzing created weekly bouquets with flowers sourced locally or from her Seattle garden.

Through initiatives such as community-supported agriculture programs and farmer-florist collaborations, these gardens serve as living showcases of local ecosystems, inspiring visitors to cultivate their own connection with nature and adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Where to experience it

Over the past decade, public gardens have started offering interactive programs and educational opportunities to help deepen visitors’ understanding of the native flora.

Travelers can experience one of these initiatives at the Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon , which introduces participants to the ancient Japanese practice of forest bathing or shinrin-yoku .

Cecily Hunt, a mindfulness guide at the garden, says that this practice involves slowing down and immersing oneself in the sensory experience. “It’s giving yourself permission to…mindfully hear, see, feel, and smell the rich tapestry of the garden,” she says.

( Here’s how to relieve stress at the world’s beautiful Zen gardens .)

Japanese gardens, with their deliberate use of shades and tones of green, are specifically designed to facilitate this connection with nature. Visitors are encouraged to create their own mindfulness experiences, with strategically placed benches inviting them to listen the sounds of nature and feel grounded by connecting with the earth beneath their feet. Hunt emphasizes the importance of silence and presence, urging visitors to refrain from distractions such as chatting and photography to immerse themselves fully in the tranquil ambiance.

Similarly, the Atlanta Botanical Garden offers a mindful approach to food through its edible garden. Michael Del Valle, the outdoor horticulture manager, says that the garden serves as a living demonstration, where guests can witness the growth of vegetables and fruits, learn how to incorporate them into their cooking, and cultivate their own garden at home.

Throughout the summer, cooking demos, classes, and chef-created dinners are held in the open-air kitchen. “People are surprised at what they see growing here, like rice, as they discover edible plants they can grow in their own yard,” says Del Valle.

In Vail, Colorado , the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens’ Colorado Alpine EcoFlora Project engages visitors as community scientists, inviting them to help document fragile alpine plants impacted by climate change through smartphone photography and uploads to iNaturalist.

Visitors take in the view from the top of 20 Fenchurch Street, known as the as the Walkie-Talkie.

The Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan , features the nation’s longest tree canopy walk— 1,400 feet long—offering visitors a breathtaking treetop perspective that fosters a newfound appreciation for the environment below.

The Tyler Texas Rose Garden invites visitors to stop and smell any of the 38,000 rose bushes planted across 600 garden beds. In Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, the Phipps Conservatory’ s indoor butterfly forest offers up-close encounters with these vital pollinators, complemented by virtual classes on native plants, soil health, and tree care.

The sunken garden of the Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada , offers an immersive sensory experience. Once an abandoned quarry, this garden now features 151 flower beds in a kaleidoscope of colors.
