As Hurricane Ian approaches Florida's Sarasota County, some Florida airports have announced closures, and airlines are offering travel waivers for those impacted.

Many travelers have already had their plans disrupted. Nearly 2,000 U.S. flights slated for Wednesday have been canceled, according to flight-tracking site Flightaware.com, with the highest cancellations at Florida airports.

At a White House briefing, FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell said the entire state will likely be affected by heavy rains, strong winds, flash flooding, storm surge and power outages this week.

"Floridians are going to experience the impacts of this storm for a very long time," she said.

Here are the local airport closures and airline travel waivers in anticipation of Hurricane Ian.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was October. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. • Frequently Asked Questions on Travel During Hurricane Season
  • You are here:
  • Crisis Preparation

Provided below are answers to questions frequently asked by visitors traveling in or with plans to travel to Florida during hurricane season. It is important to note that a direct hit to a particular destination anywhere in the state by a major hurricane is a rare event. Floridians have learned to prepare for these storms and respect their impact potential.

  • VISIT FLORIDA travel advisories on www.VISITFLORIDA.com
  • General hurricane media inquiries: media line, Florida Division of Emergency Management/State Emergency Response Team, (850) 921-0217
  • Tourism-related media inquiries: [email protected]
  • VISIT FLORIDA Partners and businesses in the Florida tourism industry: [email protected]
  • General tourism information: VISIT FLORIDA consumer hotline, 888-735-2872

Where can I get real-time advisories for hurricanes/tropical storms? Travel advisories at www.VISITFLORIDA.com provide visitors with real-time information from local tourism officials and links to advisories from these state and national sources:

What months are considered hurricane season? The Atlantic hurricane season is officially June 1 to November 30 . The peak of the season is from mid-August to mid-October.

What is a hurricane? A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with a defined circulation and sustained winds of 74 miles per hour (65 knots) or greater in the North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern North Pacific Ocean. This same tropical cyclone is known as a typhoon in the western Pacific and a cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

What is the difference between a tropical storm watch, tropical storm warning, hurricane watch and hurricane warning? The National Hurricane Center in Miami has the responsibility for monitoring and issuing watches and warnings in the Atlantic and Northeast basins. A tropical storm watch is issued when tropical storm conditions, including winds from 39-73 mph, pose a possible threat to a specified coastal area within 48 hours, and a warning when tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours or less. A hurricane watch is issued when hurricane conditions are expected within 48 hours, and a warning when a hurricane with sustained winds of 74 mph or higher is expected in a specified coastal area in 36 hours or less. If a warning or watch is issued, visitors should begin preliminary preparations for potential landfall and stay tuned to radio and TV for official weather and evacuation updates.

Should we cancel travel plans during hurricane season? VISIT FLORIDA clearly understands that some people have concerns about the possible impact a hurricane could have on a planned vacation. It is always wise when making travel plans during hurricane season to check with airlines, hotels, car rental companies, etc. to find out how they inform their guests when a hurricane is approaching, what actions they plan to take, and what refund policies they have in place. Once again, it is important to point out that a direct hit to any one particular destination by a major hurricane is an extremely rare event.

What do travelers do if they are in Florida and a hurricane is approaching? The safety of Florida's visitors is a priority to everyone who works in the tourism industry. VISIT FLORIDA works closely with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, local tourism offices throughout the state, as well as local, state and national media to ensure visitors have access to accurate and timely information that will help them make the most informed travel planning decisions possible. Visitors are encouraged to go to VISITFLORIDA.com to follow the latest weather and travel updates, in addition to staying tuned to local television and radio stations. If visitors are asked to evacuate from coastal areas, please follow the instructions of the emergency response officials.

How are hurricane categories determined? What do they mean? The strength of hurricanes is rated using the Saffir/Simpson scale in the United States. This scale assigns a storm to one of five categories based on its wind speed. Category one is a minimal hurricane and category five is the strongest. Using this scale helps estimate the potential property damage and expected coastal flooding from a hurricane.

Categories are determined by Maximum Sustained Winds as follows:

  • Category 1. 74-95 mph
  • Category 2. 96-110 mph
  • Category 3. 111-130 mph
  • Category 4. 131-155 mph
  • Category 5. 156+ mph

What is a tropical disturbance? A tropical disturbance is an organized system of clouds and thunderstorms without a defined circulation.

What is a tropical depression? A tropical depression is an organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a circular wind circulation and maximum sustained winds less than 39 mph.

What is a tropical storm? A tropical storm is an organized system of strong thunderstorms with defined circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.

What regions around the globe have hurricanes? Hurricanes develop over tropical or subtropical waters around the world. There are seven tropical cyclone areas (basins) where storms occur:

  • Atlantic basin (North Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea)
  • Northeast Pacific basin (from Mexico to the dateline)
  • Northwest Pacific basin (from the dateline to Asia)
  • North Indian basin (including the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea)
  • Southwest India basin (Africa)
  • Southeast Indian/Australian basin
  • Australian/Southwest Pacific basin

What is the "eye" of the storm? What are rain bands? The hurricane's core is called the "eye." The winds closest to the eye, typically averaging about 60 miles from the center of the storm, are the strongest and bring the most potential for damage. Rain bands, or outer spiral bands, are the bands of clouds and thunderstorms that trail away from the eye wall in a spiral fashion and are capable of producing heavy bursts of rain and wind. The spiral bands also make hurricanes appear to cover a much larger area with damaging winds than they really do. This is the reason why damage during strong storms does not cover the entire area the storm passes over.

Why are hurricanes named? Who names them? The National Hurricane Center is responsible for naming tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin. Hurricanes are named to provide ease of communication and reduce confusion between forecasters and the general public regarding forecasts, watches and warnings.

In what ways do hurricanes and tropical storms actually help Florida's environment? According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, hurricanes and tropical storms:

  • Help to scrub harmful algae from coral reefs
  • Prune dead limbs from trees allowing sunlight to penetrate the forest floor
  • Deposit sand atop and on the backside of barrier islands, which elevates them, keeping islands from becoming a sand bar
  • Moderate global temperature
  • Produce rain that helps refill the aquifer
  • Increases the water flow in natural springs
  • Rehydrates dried out wetlands that benefit wildlife
  • Downed trees are good for the scrub jays, increasing the endangered species' habitat.

Hurricane Idalia rumbled out of Florida on Wednesday, but getting in and out of the Sunshine State remained a major headache for regular air travelers.

Most of the half-dozen major Florida airports that shut down operations when the massive storm was menacing the state reopened for business.

But the Federal Aviation Administration warned that air travel was still feeling the after-effects of Idalia.

"Hurricane #Idalia is causing flight cancellations as it makes landfall in Florida," the agency warned on its official Twitter feed as Idalia was moving into south Georgia. "Severe weather can affect flights beyond the immediate area."

Southwest Airlines’ schedule was the most affected by Idalia, with 220 cancellations and 300 delays, the flight tracking website FlightAware showed.

United, Delta and American Airlines reported about 700 delays combined and roughly 330 cancellations, according to FlightAware.

Still, Tampa International Airport  announced online that it was reopening at 4 p.m. Wednesday, but only for incoming flights.

"Departing flights and normal operations will resume early Thursday morning," the TIA post said.

Tampa International Airport CEO Joe Lopano said they dodged a very big bullet.

“TPA is fortunate to have avoided the worst effects of such a dangerous storm, after acting in an abundance of caution to protect the safety of our passengers, employees and facilities,” Lopano said in a statement. “We’re focused now on returning to full operational capacity to continue serving our community and to assist in recovery efforts for our fellow Floridians.”

The much-smaller St.  Pete-Clearwater International Airport  announced it too would reopen, but at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

A sign informs travelers that Tampa International Airport is closed on Aug. 29, 2023.

"Flights to resume Thursday, check with airlines for status," the airport announced on its Twitter feed .

The Sarasota-Bradenton Airport resumed business on Wednesday morning, but warned travelers to check with their airlines for the latest updates.

Jacksonville International Airport posted a similar message on its official website .

"Travelers should contact their airlines for rebooking options," it said.

But the Gainesville Regional Airport remained closed Wednesday and gave no indication on its feed when it would reopen.

Tallahassee International Airport also remained closed Wednesday "with normal operations resuming Thursday morning," according to the official Tallahassee government website .

Florida is known as the Sunshine State; with good reason. Tourists the world over are drawn by its great beaches, theme parks, and, of course, wonderful weather. Long summers are followed by warm winters. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León gave the peninsula the name La Florida, meaning “flowery land.” With more than 990 miles of shoreline, it’s no surprise that Florida is a top destination for travelers in search of sand and surf. The western side of the peninsula, situated on the Gulf Coast, has warm seas and soft white sands. The Atlantic coast is made for the surfers with bigger, rougher waves and broader beaches. Some of the world’s most beautiful beaches can be found in the southern state: Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin, Sanibel Island, and Anna Maria Beach off Bradenton.

The central part of the state has all the do-not-miss attractions for your next Florida vacation. Orlando is amusement park heaven, packed with Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal Studios, Cypress Gardens, Bok Tower Gardens, Daytona Speedway and Gatorland. For space and history buffs, the Kennedy Space Center is nearby. Once the kids have gone to bed, Orlando turns up the heat to party.

For a trip with unrivaled nightlife, Miami’s South Beach lays claim to being “the coolest place on the planet,” but the rest of Florida is no slouch when it comes to partying and is serviced by many international airports. A cheap flight to Fort Lauderdale reveals six seaside communities, stocked with plenty of bars and clubs. Nearly two-thirds of all Major League Baseball teams make Florida their home for spring training. Major league sports are a big part of Florida year-round, with NFL football, NBA basketball and two NHL hockey teams calling the state home.

Getting to and around Florida

Orlando airport:

There are several bus routes you can take to get from the airport to the city, all of which take different journeys so it’s worth figuring out which one you need to get to wherever it is in Orlando you need to be. There is also a shuttle service that can take you from Orlando to Miami as well as other big cities. If you have a lot of luggage and would rather not use public transport then you can opt to get a taxi from outside of the airport. These are more costly than the bus counterparts but if you can split the fare with a friend they can be more worthwhile, especially if you’re in a rush.

Fort Myers airport:

One of the easiest ways to get from the airport to the city is via the LeeTran service. It operates from 6:40am until 9:25pm during the week, with slightly shorter times throughout the weekends. The timetable does change depending on the season though so it’s worth double checking before you book your flights to Florida, especially if you land very early or late. Once you’ve booked your flights to Florida it’s worth choosing a hotel which provides free shuttle transfers to and from the airport as this can make your journey a lot easier. Lastly you can hire a car or take a taxi from outside of the airport however this will cost a lot more than the bus option available.

A car is the best way to get around Florida. Although some cities have public transportation, you need to check that it goes where you want to go and at convenient times. Driving is generally the best way to go from town to town and across the state. Depending on the distance, flying from one city to another may be a better option.

Florida is great for bicycling. Although biking in the cities isn’t recommended, there are bike paths along the coasts and long-distance trails in central Florida. Plus, Florida is flat: its highest point is 345 feet above sea level.

Tips for your stay in Florida

  • Miami goes cultural in early December. About 20 art fairs and other independent exhibits and performances lure serious collectors to mingle for a week with the locals in the city’s parks, trendy hotels, giant air-conditioned tents and private galleries
  • Snorkeling with manatees in Florida’s Crystal River, 75 miles north of Tampa, is like taking a bath with elephants, the closest land relative to these aquatic giants.
  • You can swim with the manatees in the Homosassa River and Blue Springs on the Nature Coast of Florida (the inside curve of the western coast of the state). This area, along with the Crystal River, is home to the largest concentration of manatees in the world.
  • New Smyrna Beach, near Daytona, is quieter and has a 13 miles beach front. World-renowned as the “safest bathing beach” due to its offshore rock ledges that counteract dangerous undercurrents, it offers year-round deep sea fishing. South of New Smyrna lies the Canaveral National Seashore, which offers excellent swimming, bird watching and hiking.
  • There are several major-league fantasy camps in Florida. Each year fans take trips to Florida to play for their favorite team and mix with their heroes at spring-training facilities. Toronto Blue Jays’ spring training home is in Dunedin, 20 miles outside Tampa-St. Petersburg and about 5 miles from Clearwater.
