Why is the Dodge Journey Battery Located in The Fender-Well?

Car batteries are usually located in the fender wheel to keep it away from the heat of the engine.

Heat can shorten the life of a battery, and with it located in the fender well helps to block off some heat the engine produces.

It does make the battery harder to replace compared to a standard battery mounted in the engine bay but may have the advantage of longer battery life.

Summary The battery placement in a Dodge Journey is located in the fender-well, which may confuse those looking in the engine bay.

Some owners may wonder where the battery is located since it is not immediately clear where it is.

Replacing the battery in the Dodge Journey is straightforward but not as easy as the battery located in the engine bay.

The front tire will need to be removed, and the wheel-well splash guard will also be removed.

Once the splash guard is removed, the battery can be unbolted and replaced as any other unit would be replaced.

I did the whole job without removing the front tire. The battery was from WalMart, at $59 plus core & tax, delivered free even on a Sunday. I jacked the front end of the truck up just a little using the scissor jack found in the trunk. Of course, a special clip remover was needed, but the 10mm and 13mm wrenches did fine, plus an adjustable. Don’t listen to these YouTube guys that rip the whole front end of the car off just to do the battery!

where are the terminals to jump the car where do i get the connection to get power from another car

It’s hard to remove the bolts or nuts off the terminals, and hard to understand which ones they are. Is it always necessary to disconnect the negative ground first, and if so from where? Are any special tools required besides the clip removers?

Dodge Journey battery location and replacement

The battery in the Dodge Journey is located in an unusual location for most car batteries: it is mounted on a bumper shelf under the left side headlight. The wheel arch liner can’t protect it from dirt flying off the wheel, creating a corrosive environment. Therefore, when replacing the battery, you almost always have to replace the terminals as well.

2013 dodge journey sxt battery location

Usually, the battery replacement on the Dodge Journey is done by removing the left front wheel and part of the fender. Manipulation to remove the battery, fix it, and put the terminals through a niche in the fender is not the most convenient and “clean”.

2013 dodge journey sxt battery location

Important: “Asiatic” with 200mm high body + 20mm terminals, without removing the bumper is very problematic to install and secure.

The size of the basket allows you to install a battery up to 25 cm long, and 19 cm high.

Given the inability to easily replace the battery with a new one yourself, or dismantle it to charge it with a stationary charger at home, we recommend buying only a premium battery for your Dodge Journey: a powerful and reliable one. You should also not wait for the “natural death” of the battery, but rather change it routinely every three years, with the replacement to be carried out at the service

Dodge Journey battery selection rules:

  • Only a battery with a left-hand “plus” (straight polarity) will fit;
  • the battery does not need to have a bottom rim, because the battery in the Dodge Journey is secured at the top with a clamping plate;
  • for all gasoline engines can be used battery capacity 60-64 Ah, size 245h175h190 mm or 245h175h175 mm

Important: When the battery is replaced, nothing more than a routine reset of the stored values in the control unit occurs in any Dodge Journey model or configuration. De-energizing the system during battery replacement resets the daily mileage and injection system RAM tables.

The Dodge Journey uses the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), which is a smart battery sensor (located on the minus terminal).

In addition, the car uses starters that don’t require high cranking currents from the battery. Improved ECU programs for cold and hot starts of the engine: switching on start from 40-100 engine rpm, mixture enrichment control by rpm and temperature, RPM position, ignition angle dependent on rpm, reduced fuel injection time, multi-spark plug mode at low engine rpm.

Always install a quality branded battery in the car, selected according to the characteristics required by the manufacturer, not according to the advertising slogans of battery sellers.

In this video we will show you where the battery is located on Dodge Journey

Where is the battery located in a Dodge Journey?

The video above shows you how to replace the battery in your 2010 Dodge Journey. We recommend changing the battery in Dodges every 4 years. Although some batteries last much longer, most batteries begin breaking down chemically after four years, so you could experience dimmer headlights and other negative effects before you have a dead battery in your Journey that you need to replace.

The battery location in a Dodge Journey can typically be found in the engine bay, but may be in the trunk, fender or inside of the vehicle. You may need to remove the air filter housing, a plastic engine cover or parts of the cowl to find the battery in your Journey. See exactly where the battery is located in your 2010 Dodge Journey.

Replacing the battery in your Journey involves removing the terminals. When you reconnect the terminals, your radio presets are likely to be cleared out. In some Journeys, you may need to re-enter a security code to get your radio to work again. Check for this code in your owners manual - it will usually be either a sticker or small card in the booklet. If you can't find it, call Dodge and they will give you the code for free. In many Dodges, the transmission "learns" how you drive over time and makes adjustments, so you may experience altered driving dynamics as your car re-learns your driving style after changing the battery.

  • 2013 Dodge Journey Battery: The Best Option

You should have no problem finding a brand-new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) battery for a 2020 model car. But a 2013 Dodge Journey battery? They’re still out there, but they might be tricky to find. So you’ve got to know the specs.

What’s the best battery for a 2013 Dodge Journey?

You will want to check your owner’s manual to make sure, but your Journey should have a group size 26 525CCA lead-acid battery. A group size 86 will also fit. Get an OEM battery if you can, but make sure you get the specs right if you can’t.

Red 2013 Dodge Journey From Front-Passenger Side

If you just want to replace your battery, all you need to do is write that down and take it into the auto shop. But if you’re curious as to what the heck all those numbers actually mean, keep reading, and we’ll get right into it.

Battery Group Sizes Explained

Battery group sizes are dictated by the BCI (Battery Council International) as a universal shorthand for their physical dimensions.

Sometimes, a car made in the U.S. will have a battery made in Japan. So if the U.S. is using the English language and measuring in inches, and Japan is using the Japanese language and the metric system, there could be some confusion.

When we’re all using BCI coding, instead, we’re all on the same page.

A group size 26 battery, like you’ll find in a 2013 Dodge Journey, would be 8 3/16 x 6 13/16 x 7 3/4 inches in length, width and height.

If you’re curious about the 525CCA, that means that the battery can produce 525 Cold Cranking Amps. This is a measurement of how the battery performs in cold weather.

Lead-Acid, Lithium-Ion or SLI?

The 2013 Dodge Journey uses a lead-acid battery, which has been the standard in cars for decades. However, in recent years, we’ve seen automakers phasing these batteries out for AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries.

AGMs function similarly to lead-acid, but with a dry storage approach using fiberglass to absorb the electrolytes. Because these batteries are spill-proof, they can be stored at odd angles and under the seats, and they won’t expire as quickly as lead-acid batteries.

Unfortunately, you can’t replace a lead-acid battery with AGM if your car requires a lead-acid battery. AGM and lead-acid batteries are recharged at different rates, so if you’re looking for a lead-acid battery, you need a lead-acid battery.

Aftermarket vs. OEM: What’s the Difference?

Red Car Battery Standing Out From Others

As for a remote control, you can swap out the factory-issued batteries for whatever you like and it won’t matter. Car batteries don’t quite work that way.

The OEM battery is designed specifically to match your vehicle. An aftermarket battery is reverse-engineered based on the OEM battery to match the performance “close enough.”

Minor differences in specs like water content and anode and cathode capacities, over thousands of miles, will typically result in aftermarket batteries burning out much sooner than OEM batteries.

OEM batteries typically come with guaranties from the automaker, and the replacement itself may even be covered by your warranty.

OEM batteries can be a little more expensive, but you can typically expect them to last longer, meaning that the value ultimately comes out in your favor.

Finally, OEM batteries are just easier to shop for. You don’t have to compare brands or read product reviews. You just go to the dealer and ask for a new battery.

If You Must Go Aftermarket…

As your vehicle gets older, it may be harder to find OEM batteries for sale. Your nearest Dodge dealer might have 2013 Journey batteries in stock right now, but will they still have them available next time you need a new battery?

If you don’t have the option of buying an OEM battery, just make sure you get either a group size 26 or 86 lead-acid battery.

Duralast  comes highly recommended as an aftermarket battery brand. Still, the very best aftermarket battery is usually the second-best choice for your vehicle.

2013 journey battery replacement q&a, dodge battery replacement faq, how much to replace the battery in my dodge.

Depending on power, size, and quality, prices for a replacement car battery range from about $45 to $250. Your local dealership, auto parts store or automotive service center can check your current battery or hook you up with a new car battery.

If you go to the dealership, you might want to schedule an appointment to minimize the wait.

How long does a car battery last in my Dodge?

The average car, truck or SUV battery should last six years. But there are a lot of key factors that can change that:

  • extreme temperatures
  • heavy accessory loads
  • frequent towing

In those cases, you may only get 3 or 4 years from your car battery.

And, of course, if you leave the lights on overnight or the trunk ajar, you might wake up with a dead battery, no matter how new it is. Luckily, some newer cars have a failsafe to keep this from happening.

How does a car battery work?

The battery in your vehicle is there to provide a jolt of electrical energy to start the engine and to provide engine-off accessory power for a limited amount of time. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over to power the accessories and charge the battery. Car batteries typically feature six connected cells in a lead-acid formulation, or up to 12 cells in a 24-volt system found in heavy trucks or other large vehicles.

What’s involved in maintaining or replacing a battery?

Batteries are not “one size fits all.” There are several things to consider:

  • Size :Typically based on your vehicle’s make, model and engine type, it is literally the footprint of the battery, along with placement of the battery terminals. Every battery has a slightly different terminal placement. Take care to make sure the new battery you are putting into your car, truck or SUV is the same size as the one you are replacing. It’s got to be “apples to apples”. In other words, don’t try to fit a pineapple into the space reserved for a canteloupe.
  • Age :Like a loaf of fresh-baked bread, batteries are best when “fresh,” within six months of manufacture. Most batteries, like the one in your current vehicle, will have a date code to tell you this information. When in doubt, call the battery maker to decipher the date code.
  • Cold Cranking Amps : Can this battery start your frozen SUV at 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the dead of winter when the oil is as thick as molasses? The higher the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating, the better the battery’s starting power. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0 degrees F for 30 seconds, while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
  • Reserve Capacity : In the case of an alternator failure, the Reserve Capacitywill give you an estimate of how long your car’s battery will be able to run on battery power alone, without the help of the alternator.

Speaking of the alternator, a faulty alternator can cause your battery to not recharge properly. Your dealer’s service department or your local auto repair center has the equipment to check the health of your vehicle’s alternator. We recommend having it checked every time you change your oil.

How do I replace the battery in my Dodge?

A confident do-it-your-selfer can replace a vehicle battery. Start by checking your vehicle owner’s manual for the battery’s proper size and location. Find the positive and negative posts. The positive post will have a red plastic cover over it. Look for a + sign stamped onto the battery or printed on a nearby label. Loosen the negative (-) terminal bolt and remove the cable. Be sure not to touch the positive post. Once you loosen the bolt, use a terminal puller to remove the cable. Repeat the sequence with the positive post.

Now remove the clamp or retaining system that keeps the battery in place. Carefully lift out the old battery. Look for any corrosion on the cables and remove it with a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool.

Drop in the new battery so that the positive post lines up with the red cable. Secure it with the battery retaining clamp that you removed earlier. If the battery has anti-corrosion washers, put them in place now and use a thin layer of anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Tighten the positive cable and then do it all over again with the negative (-) black cable.

Make sure the battery is secure and congratulations: you’ve replaced your car’s battery!
