See what our guests are saying about this tour, the crew was super friendly and professional..

Everything was well organized. The crew was super friendly and professional. Even lunch break, which is usually “plain” was very good. The snorkeling was a fun experience but the highlight of this excursion was definitely the flamenco beach! It’s a trip I recommend.

Will definitely use East Island Excursions again

Very well organized and punctual, staff were professional and knowledgeable. Will definitely recommend East Island Excursions for Culebra trip.

Food and drinks were excellent lots of it plus snorkeling equipment was in excellent condition. Culebra trip was fun and will definitely use East Island Excursions again.

Full Day Snorkeling & Beach Trip to Culebra

This was a FANTASTIC excursion & my family & I (3 adults) would do this again in a heartbeat. The boat is clean, beautiful & well maintained. The crew is so nice & professional, & they take passenger safety & satisfaction seriously while ensuring FUN! Our trip had a diverse mix of ages, which was nice.

The boat ride from the m arina to the snorkeling spot in Culebra took about 1 hour 15 min. to get to & we left promptly at 9am. We snorkeled for about an hour with the lunch buffet put out during that time. An hour was plenty IMO & we did not feel rushed or unable to enjoy our lunch, which was a nice spread. There were even options for my vegetarian husband to enjoy. The beverages did not disappoint. The snorkeling was so beautiful & everything is provided.

Our captain was unable to take us to Flamenco Beach safely due to conditions, so instead we were taken to Culebrita island to spend about 2 hrs +/- for beach time. It was GORGEOUS! We swam, relaxed, & had the best time & it appeared that everyone else did as well. The return trip back to the marina took about the same time as going out.

Highest ratings for Capt. Javi & his crew – Dani, Angel, Adrian, & Diego (sorry if I missed anyone). I was truly impressed with the level of service they provided to everyone on board. I was initially hesitant to book this trip out of concern for it being too crowded or too much of a younger, party-hard crowd, but that was not at all the case. East Island Excursions does a top-notch job & I highly recommend them based on my experience.

This experience is one to remember

I was extremely pleased with the customer service on this excursion. Anyone can take the ferry in Puerto Rico and have access to culebra beaches, but this experience is one to remember and not one to miss. I came with my family (6 people) and at first we were hesitant about the price compared to just taking the ferry but it was worth every $. I vacation often and take many excursions and not often do I feel like you get the true value of what you pay for, but with this company you do.

We did the half day tour to culebra (flamenco beach) and snorkeling. Everything you need is provided for you expect sunscreen and a towel. I will definitely be back.

So what makes Flamenco Beach so special? Let's count the ways...

Following, we will attempt to share the special qualities that make Flamenco such a special place; but words and photos struggle to convey the true splendor; it’s an experience that must be lived to be fully appreciated.

Flamenco Beach - Culebra, Puerto Rico

If you arrive at Culebra by plane, you’ll fly over Flamenco Beach, quickly understanding why it is regarded as one of the best beaches in the world.  From the aerial perspective, the clarity of the water, the stretch of sparkling white sand, nestled amidst verdant rolling hills, perfectly come together to create a breathtaking landscape.

Take a leap of faith and venture to Culebra, the experience will surpass your expectations.  Upon arrival, you may find that every beach you visit afterward falls short, contributing to why seasoned travelers have kept Culebra as their secret vacation haven for decades.

The Water and Sand of Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach - Best beach with clear water and white sand.

Perhaps it’s the crystal-clear water with gentle waves, painted in endless shades of blue, that makes Flamenco Beach a healing chromotherapy experience.  Spend an entire day at Flamenco, and you’ll witness a spectacular display of changing water colors—from clear glass and soft baby blue to turquoise and deep emerald green. Capture the ever-changing scene with photos taken throughout the day to preserve these vibrant memories.

Great boat tour and snorkeling. We went to the island of Culebra on the tour. Great staff and nice drinks! Definitely recommend the fast boat. Thanks to the skipper and the crew. You were great!

Captain & crew helpful and fun, brought us to some wonderful snorkeling spaces. Maybe 25 or so people total on boat, so a good size group but not overcrowded. Lots of fun!

Highly recommend this tour, wonderful service, food and attention. You must go to Flamenco beach and snorkel in Culebra they made our trip to Puerto Rico worth every penny.

The crew was amazing and friendly. Couldn't ask for a better time out in Culebra. After a boat ride to the island we spent a couple hours snorkeling. Next up was a provided lunch on the boat and rum cocktails. Following that we went to Flamenco beach for a couple hours.

Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico (2024) – All You Need to Know

  • Flamenco Beach

Are you looking for a breathtaking, award-winning beach to relax on?

Look no further than Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico!

I’ve grown up in Puerto Rico and have visited almost all of the beaches, and Flamenco is in my top three.

With its clear water and soft white sand, it’s easy to see why this beach comes highly recommended by tourists and locals alike.

In this article, I will cover everything that you need to know about Flamenco Beach:

– What is Flamenco Beach? – Where is Flamenco Beach located? – What is the best way to get to Flamenco Beach? – Why is Flamenco Beach famous? – Is Flamenco Beach the best beach in the world? – Can you stay on Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico? – How much does it cost to visit Flamenco Beach? – Can you visit Flamenco Beach without a tour? – How much time do you need in Flamenco Beach? – Is Flamenco Beach open to the public? – Is Flamenco Beach worth visiting?

What is Flamenco Beach?

Flamenco Beach is considered one of the top beaches in the world.

This beach is perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing; you name it!

image of a beach

The beach has lifeguards, showers, bathrooms, a parking area, and a food truck where you can find delicious Puerto Rican food.

This beach was not always a tropical paradise destination; it has an impactful history dating back to World War II .

Culebra was used to allocate all of the Navy after Spain left Puerto Rico in 1901.

This island was used for ground maneuvering, bombing practice, and test landings. Although the Navy did not establish an official base in Culebra, tons of equipment were moved there for testing.

By 1975, the Navy finally agreed to move out of the Island and left a lot of gear behind, including the iconic and massive tank you probably have seen when googling “Culebra, Puerto Rico.”

Because this tank was so big and heavy to move, they let the salty sea water and winds work their way into the metal, leaving it to rust as the years passed.

Today, the tank remains a historical memory that this beach offers.

Realistically though, the tank is now more submerged in the water. If you see pictures now, it was back when it was closer to shore.

You’ll still be able to get on it and take pictures, just make sure you’re in your bathing suit!

Where is Flamenco Beach located?

Flamenco Beach is located on the island of Culebra, just 20 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico.

You cannot drive directly to Flamenco Beach, you’ll have to drive to the ferry terminals in Ceiba which is an hour-and-a-half-long drive from San Juan.

image of Flamenco Beach map

Once you get on a ferry and reach Culebra, you’ll take a taxi van from the terminal port that drives you directly to Flamenco Beach.

Watch the video below to learn more about Flamenco Beach, Culebra and different ways to get there.

What is the best way to get to Flamenco Beach?

The best way to get to Flamenco Beach is by ferry in Ceiba.

We recommend taking the ferry from Ceiba to Culebra island as it’s a very budget-friendly option and much more flexible. Ceiba is an hour drive from San Juan.

Save the pin in Google Maps below to locate the ferry terminals:

The trip to Culebra on a ferry is about 45 minutes, offers affordable tickets plus discounts for kids.

You can buy your tickets ahead of time online by clicking here.

From recent experience, I highly recommend booking at least a week or two in advance.

Why is Flamenco Beach famous?

This award-winning beach is famous for its bright blue waters, diamond-dusted sands, diving sites, and accessible swimming areas.

It’s perfect for a family getaway and even better for a romantic one.

It’s also famous for its calm waters. Because it’s in a protected cove location, there are no rough waves. This makes it perfect to snorkel and ideal to take the kids.

The name “Flamenco Beach” comes from the flamingos that visit during the winter, creating a gorgeous background and breathtaking visit. If you’re planning on visiting during the Winter, and lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one, you’re in for a treat!

Is Flamenco Beach the best beach in the world?

Flamenco Beach won 3rd ranking as the best beach in the world by TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award, and for good reason.

Also voted by Discovery Channel as the second most beautiful beach in the world and has an active Blue Flag Beach status.

With all these accolades, it’s safe to say that Flamenco Beach is one of the best beaches in the world.

Can you stay on Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico?

As of recently, you cannot stay on Flamenco Beach

Due to the pandemic, they have limited their camping area until further notice.

There are no hotel or resort nearby Flamenco Beach, you will have to stay at an Airbnb or hotel near town and take a shuttle to the beach

If you’re renting a car or a golf cart, then you’re in luck and can travel to Flamenco Beach anytime you like.

image showing the camping area in Flamenco Beach

How much does it cost to visit Flamenco Beach?

There is a small per person admission to Flamenco Beach.

If you’re traveling in your rented car or golf cart, expect to pay for daily parking.

If you’re coming from the terminal and taking a taxi van, expect to pay for transportation from the terminal to the beach and back to the terminal when you’re done for the day.

image of a beach

In total, from ferry ticket, to taxi van transportation and admissions to enter the beach, you’re expected to spend around $30 in total per person. To enjoy food and drinks, I’d say bring $50 in cash in total (remember to tip your drivers.)

Can you visit Flamenco Beach without a tour?

Yes, in fact, Flamenco Beach does not require a tour guide to get there.

However, there are plenty of tour companies that can help you explore Flamenco Beach.

You can also book a private catamaran trip to Culebra which can take you to the other islands near this beach such as Culebrita, Luis Pena, and beyond.

image of a turtle

How much time do you need in Flamenco Beach?

Realistically, you will need to plan out an entire day dedicated to visiting this beach.

Many travelers plan a vacation directly to Culebra and stay at an Airbnb, so if that is your case, then you can stay at the beach as much as you want.

For the average traveler who is staying in Puerto Rico and needs to take the ferry to visit the island, you will want to book a ticket departing early in the morning until late in the evening for your return.

image of a camping area in Flamenco Beach

Is Flamenco Beach open to the public?

Yes! As of September 2022, Flamenco Beach is open to the public.

Flamenco Beach is open all day every day, but the parking area, kiosks, and camping areas are closed at around 6 pm. If you want to enter the beach after these hours, you’ll have to find a way in that is not the main entrance.

My best recommendation is to park near the “El Muellecito” area and enter at the openings.

Is Flamenco Beach worth visiting?

Absolutely!

Flamenco beach is one of the best beaches you can visit during your stay in Puerto Rico.

Missing out on this award-winning beach experience will make you question if you enjoyed your stay in Puerto Rico or not.

Although there is much to offer besides the beach, the experience is worthwhile.

This is an adventurous trip to go through: Getting on a 45-minute ferry, taking a taxi van to the beach while you see the beautiful scenery Culebra has to offer, and more.

And that’s not all; the local restaurants offer one of the most delicious and authentic Puerto Rican cuisines your taste buds will enjoy.

So if you’re visiting Puerto Rico soon, I recommend reserving a day in your calendar to visit Flamenco Beach because, realistically, it’s a trip that will take all day to enjoy.

image of a beach

Visiting Flamenco Beach in Culebra will be one of the best experiences you’ll ever have.

Enjoying the white sand and crystal clear waters will have you understand why this is one of the most famous beaches in the world.

It’s always a pleasure to be able to visit the island of Culebra; many residents in Puerto Rico have never had the chance to visit the island, so you know it’s going to be a treat.

If you’re expecting to take excellent pictures of the tank, just a heads up, the tank is more submerged in the water than it is on land. You’ll be able to take a picture, but be sure you’re wearing a bathing suit.

Final thoughts

Flamenco Beach is definitely worth visiting.

The trip to Flamenco Beach is relatively affordable, with the ferry ride, transportation to Culebra and admission to the beach averaging around $30.00 USD per person.

So if you’re asking me, or anyone who has visited this beach, they will recommend it and say it’s very much worth the trip.

Flameco Beach on Culebra Island

If you are a sun worshiper, a beach lover or snorkel fanatic, I don’t think a trip to Puerto Rico would be complete without a trip to Culebra. It can be done as a day trip or stay for longer (there are a few hundred hotel rooms and vacation rentals available).

Culebra is an island 20 miles off the north-east coast of Puerto Rico. This small island (seven-by-four-miles) is a favorite of tourists and locals alike, not only for the things on the island , but also for the things you will not find here. Culebra has no luxury resorts, casinos, elegant restaurants, theaters, or night life to speak of. It also has no crowds, crime or traffic. What it does have is just a laid back island feel and great beaches and snorkeling.

Book Now!

I have been to Culebra as a day trip a few times. I went to snorkel, and visit Flamenco beach. Flamenco is the most popular beach on Culebra, but the beach is usually never too crowded (except Holy Week and summer weekends). Flamenco beach is the gem of this small island. It is one of those “picture postcard” beaches – it is very pretty, with super white sand, beautiful views, and crystal clear water. It did not win this year, but this beach usually gets the prestigious Blue Flag beach. You can expect clean water, lifeguards, and facilities. There are bathrooms (sometimes cleanliness is questionable) and a few small changing rooms, and the showers are available.

The gate at the beach is open from 7am until 5:30pm. When we go, we try to get a spot closer to the tree line, so that in the afternoon there will be some shade. You can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas at the beach for $10 each- the guy is located just outside the beach gates (you will see his truck). Note- there are paths you can use before/after hours to enter the beach, they are located outside the gate.

Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island

Flamenco beach is a 1½ mile long crescent on the north side of Culebra. It is a protected cove, so there are usually hardly any waves, and I think the snorkeling is easy (it can get rougher in the Winter, monitor water and wave conditions- don’t go in if there are too many waves or if red flags are flying). I have found really great snorkeling right off the beach . Loads of different types of fishes.

This is where I took my niece and nephew (7 & 10 years old) to try their first snorkeling adventure, and they loved it. I think the best snorkeling is out along the outer edge of the reef, so you are in over your head. We bring boogie boards so the kids can “hang out” holding onto the board when they get tired. Wear a T-shirt while snorkeling to avoid getting a sunburned back.

Currently it is locked, but sometimes you can walk through the gate in the back of the parking lot along a long trail , you will end up on another beach that also has great snorkeling ( Carlos Rosario beach ). However there are no facilities there.

There are food and drinks available for sale at Flamenco Beach (in the parking lot area) during the day. There are picnic tables under the shade of some pine trees, so you can enjoy your meal in the shade, or you can bring your lunch back to the beach with you. You can also bring your own food and drinks in a cooler, but glass is not permitted. This is the only beach (that we’ve been to) where they actually check your coolers before letting you onto the beach.

An interesting thing, as you walk along this beach, is the remains of old tanks left over from military practice. One of them is all painted up, while another is just rusting in place. It reminds you that even in “paradise”, the real world is not far removed.

If you want to snorkel, you can rent snorkel equipment at Culebra Divers (dive shop)or Culebra Bike Shop, which are both right across the street from the ferry dock, or Culebra Snorkeling and Dive Center in town’s Mercado area. You can also get guided snorkel trips from both the dive shop and Kayaking PR. A number of the car rental places and even the taxi drivers sometimes rent snorkel equipment!.

Getting around the island is easy – there are loads of reasonably priced taxis. There will be tons of taxis at the ferry dock, and the airport, to take you right to Flamenco beach (about $5 per person each way). The taxis will tell you what time they will come back to Flamenco beach to take you back to the Ferry dock.

If you are more of an adventurer and want to explore on your own, you can rent cars and Golf carts (make reservations ahead of time). Parking at Flamenco Beach is $5. Walking is not really an option- It would be a long hot walk on a road without sidewalks!

Camping area has reopened, partially and only by reservation 787-742-1404 or 787-742-1400. . You will need to bring your own equipment. Tents and other gear are available for rental on the island (I hear someone at the beach rents equipment, but I don’t know for sure). You will need to register and pay for a permit – you will find the office at the entrance of the campground. You will be assigned an area to pitch your tent. Permits cost $35/night . There is no electricity, and campfires are not permitted, but there are BBQ pits if you bring charcoal. I hear it gets crowded on the weekends, and you need to bring bug repellent.

It is easy to get to and from Culebra by either taking the passenger ferry from Ceiba, or by plane. The Fast Ferry from Ceiba takes about 45 mins (the slower ferry can take up to 1.5 hrs) each way, and costs $2.25 each way. But the lines are really long for the ferry, so you need to get there very early. If you want to take a plane, they are available from the Ceiba airport, Isla Grande in San Juan, or Luis Munoz Marin airport. It is a short flight in a small plane. You need to make a reservation for a flight before going. Once you get to the airport, you will be on island time – your flight may or may not leave on time. Patience is a virtue.

If you are on the main island of PR and want to visit Culebra, but don’t want to have to deal with the ferry and worrying about getting around, there are a number of tours boats that will take you over, have all the needed supplies/gear and will show you a fun time. Some have food/drinks included, some will have snorkeling. Find Tours Like This

If you are considering a trip to Culebra, the small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, then you are probably wondering how to get to Flamenco Beach.

Playa Flamenco (as it’s known to locals) is the most popular beach on Culebra and often makes it onto lists of the top beaches in the world .

However, it’s a bit complicated to get to Flamenco Beach, but that’s part of what makes it so amazing!

Here’s how to get to Culebra and then get to the beach plus a cost breakdown.

Options for Getting To Culebra

puerto rico fast ferries picture

The first step in getting to Playa Flamenco is getting to the island of Culebra, which is 17 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico.

You can get to Culebra on a small plane or ferry.

We have always opted for the ferry to Flamenco Beach since it is WAY cheaper and more flexible.

The Culebra ferry to is 45-55 minutes each way (on the fast ferry) and only costs $2.25 for adults and $1 for kids ages 4-12 .

If you are interested in flying to Culebra, here are some details:

  • Flights depart daily from San Juan and Ceiba (on the east coast, an hour from San Juan).
  • Flights from Ceiba start at $45 each way on Air Flamenco.
  • Flights from San Juan start at $89 each way on Cape Air.

If it is in your budget to fly, it is the fastest way to get to Culebra.

How To Take The Ferry To Culebra

inside of ferry to culebra from cieba

The ferry to Culebra is run by Puerto Rico Ferry out of the Ceiba ferry terminal, which is a little over an hour from San Juan .

Note that years ago the ferry used to leave from Fajardo, so don’t follow any outdated advice and go there instead!

I suggest you save the location in your maps app for easy navigation. Here is the exact location of the Ceiba Ferry Terminal in Google Maps:

Thankfully, you can buy tickets online ahead of time for the ferry to Culebra.

But before you visit the Puerto Rico Ferry site, please note that there are two different types of ferries to Culebra – a passenger-only ferry and a passenger AND cargo ferry (abbreviated PAX + CARGO).

The main difference between these boats is their speed – while the passenger-only ferry takes 45-55 minutes to get to Culebra, the Cargo ferry takes over an hour and a half!

map of cieba to culebra ferry route

Ticket availability typically opens up 4-6 weeks in advance, and if you want a spot on the passenger-only ferry you will want to book as far in advance as possible.

Click here to buy tickets for the ferry to Culebra on the Puerto Rico Ferry site.

Tickets are super affordable at $2.25 for adults, $1.00 for kids, and $1.00 for seniors each way.

The schedule changes seasonally so you’ll have to check the Puerto Rico Ferry site for times on the day you want to visit.

How To Buy Culebra Ferry Tickets

puerto rico ferry tickets

After you buy your tickets online you’ll get an email with QR codes that will be scanned as you enter the ferry. This is super convenient!

Note that there are two times on your ticket – a boarding time and a departure time .

In my experience the ferries seldom board more than 30 minutes in advance.

You’ll want to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time to allow time to get from the parking lot to the ferry building and get your tickets scanned, etc.

You likely will be able to buy tickets the day of if you arrive early enough unless it is a peak travel day. But I don’t like to leave anything to chance, so I suggest buying your tickets in advance from the PORFERRY site.

The ferry was very nice and comfortable inside and exceeded my expectations.

However, be warned that the 45-minute ride to Culebra was quite rough.

girl in seats on culebra ferry

Some people got sick and I even started feeling queasy the last few minutes of the ride. Luckily my daughter was fine!

On the plus side, we did see some whales at the surface as we approached Culebra which was a treat.

Also, the return ride to Ceiba is MUCH smoother and shouldn’t cause any issues.

Ceiba Ferry Terminal Parking

how to get to flamenco beach ferry parking

You do have to pay to park your car at the Ceiba ferry terminal.

When we went the cost for parking was $15 per day . You get a ticket and pay by credit card when you exit the lot.

Unfortunately, the parking is not directly next to the terminal.

free shuttle ceiba ferry

You can walk (about 10 minutes) or take a free shuttle bus pictured above.

Keep in mind that when the ferry returns there are a lot of people trying to get back to the parking lot at once and you will likely have to wait for a shuttle.

Two shuttles were running the last time we went so it wasn’t a long wait.

How To Get To Flamenco Beach: Ceiba Ferry Terminal

There is a cute little cafe inside the ferry building if you need to grab a snack. There are restrooms as well.

seating in ceiba ferry terminal

To get into the waiting area for the ferry you will have your tickets scanned on your phone (or you can print them out of course).

The waiting area was great – covered to protect you from the sun and kept cool by giant fans.

mom and daughter with shaved ice

A man was selling shaved ice in the waiting area so we got some while we waited.

They started to board the ferry about 20 minutes before departure.

How To Get To Flamenco Beach from Culebra Ferry Terminal

jeep rental playa flamenco puerto rico

The ferry from Ceiba arrives in Culebra in the only town on the island, Dewey.

Flamenco Beach is about 3 miles from town, so getting there is the next leg of your journey.

You can either take a public shared van ( publico) or rent a vehicle for the day.

The cost per person for the publico is $5 cash each way . This is a set cost so you won’t be gouged on the price!

There are dozens of shuttle buses waiting outside the ferry terminal so just grab the first one with room and you are good to go.

Or you can rent a Jeep or golf cart for the day through the popular Carlos Jeep Rental . Just be sure to make your reservation well in advance!

If you do rent a vehicle it is $5 to park at Flamenco Beach.

How To Get To Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico: Cost Breakdown

girl walking on flamenco beach in puerto rico

Finally the information I have been looking for! How do you get BACK to Ceiba tho? What time do these shuttles stop running to and from the ferry on Culebra?

Leah Crocker Althiser

Friday 16th of August 2024

Hi Chelsea! Great question. The parking area and kiosks close around 6 pm. There are many vans and taxis waiting there to take people back to town. They will make sure no one is stranded. If you wanted a ride later than that, get the phone number of whoever gives you a ride there - they love return customers and will likely try to give their number to you anyway. Hope that helps!

Yes! I always buy them at the same time as I buy the outbound trip.

Whats your recommendations for going from san juan to Ceiba? Also does the ferry takes a car if I rent one.

Monday 22nd of April 2024

@Lutfi, the ferry will not permit you to take a rental car to Culebra. A rental car is definitely the best way to get to Cieba to catch the ferry though. You will have to leave the car at the Ferry terminal and take public transit or rent a car in Culebra.
