Lagardère in Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport

PARIS — E-commerce platform JD.com and investment firm JIC are taking a minority stake in Lagardère Travel Retail Asia.

Lagardère said Thursday that it has signed an agreement whereby together they’d hold 22.36 percent. JD.com would own 18.63 percent of the Asia concern’s share capital and JIC, 3.73 percent.

The deal, which involves a cash contribution of 720 million renminbi, or about 94 million euros, should close in September. Lagardère said the acquisition is to have a favorable net effect of about 79 million euros on the group’s net debt.

In the first half ended June 30, Lagardère’s net debt was stable at 1.72 billion euros, versus 1.73 billion euros at Dec. 31, 2020.

“This minority stake is part of a strategic partnership that will accelerate Lagardère Travel Retail ’s development in Asia, particularly through digital distribution channels,” the company said in a statement Thursday. “Lagardère Travel Retail Asia will draw on the digital expertise of JD.com to develop best practices in supply chain and data analytics, and provide new customer experiences and services throughout its retail network, with the expansion of omnichannel shopping offers.”

Lagardère Travel Retail Asia spans the North Asia zone, which includes mainland China, Hong Kong and Japan. It operates in 32 airports and 28 high-speed train stations, with a network of 480 stores that trade in travel essentials, duty free and fashion, and food services. Lagardère Travel Retail Asia generated revenues of 148 million euros in 2020.

During the pandemic another notable travel-retail tie-in in Asia took place in October 2020, when Alibaba acquired a 6.1 percent stake in the world’s largest travel-retail operator, Dufry, to develop the group’s business in China. That capital increase was worth 820 million Swiss francs, or $896.3 million

The coronavirus crisis ground the travel retail industry to a complete halt, as people could no longer take trips. That has had a major impact on the business of luxury fragrance and beauty brands that comprise the channel’s number-one product category.

Pre-pandemic, the channel was posting double-digit gains in many parts of the world, driven by the Chinese consumer, but those were slashed in 2019 and 2020. Most operators are noting a gradual recovery these days.

The news about Lagardère Travel Retail Asia comes less than one day after it was revealed Wednesday that luxury titan Bernard Arnault is exiting the personal holding company of Arnaud Lagardère, who serves as chief executive officer of Lagardère SA.

CNSC’s Sanya International Duty Free Plaza on Hainan island located downtown at Hangzhou Square. Substantial upgrades unveiled in October.

Lagardère Travel Retail and JD.com have strengthened their joint venture alliance after partnering with China National Service Corporation (CNSC).

The cooperation with CNSC, agreed yesterday (28 February), is designed ‘to build a more convenient and reliable duty free shopping experience for customers’, JD confirmed in a statement seen by TRBusiness.

Sinopharm subsidiary CNSC enjoys exposure across duty free points of sale at airports, sea ports and downtown in China and through its surging offshore business on Hainan island .

“The cooperation will leverage all sides’ advantageous resources to strengthen CNSC’s online and offline duty free business, cross-border e-commerce and so on,” continued the statement.

“Meanwhile, it will also promote the digital intelligent transformation of the duty-free industry from the traditional business model.

This is designed to capitalise on Lagardère Travel Retail’s experience in bricks-and-mortar offline travel retailing and luxury operations, together with JD’s prowess in supply chain, infrastructure, and omni-channel activities.

As reported , e-commerce juggernaut JD and state-owned fund China Jianyin Investment (JIC) moved to acquire a minority stake (22.36%) in Lagardère Travel Retail Asia in September.

Eudes Fabre, Lagardère Travel Retail CEO for North Asia, told TRBusiness at the time that the tie-up was focused on two core objectives: growth acceleration within China and the wider region and quickening the digitalisation of the travel retail business model.

  • JD com : Venture of JD, Lagardere Enters Into Duty-Free Cooperation With CNSC

by Doris Liu

A joint venture between JD and its French partner Lagardere Travel Retail entered into cooperation with the China National Service Corporation for Chinese Personnel Working Abroad (CNSC), a subsidiary of Sinopharm, on February 28, aiming to build a more convenient and reliable duty-free shopping experience for customers.

CNSC's duty free business operates across China with full coverage of the duty-free channels of air, land and sea ports, and municipalities. The cooperation will leverage all sides' advantageous resources to strengthen offshore, online and offline duty-free business, cross-border e-commerce and so on. Meanwhile, it will also promote the digital intelligent transformation of the duty-free industry from the traditional business model.

With policies in favor of the cross-border e-commerce being introduced, more and more traditional duty-free companies are seeking digital transformations. Established in Hong Kong and controlled by JD, the joint venture between JD and Lagardere Travel Retail, namely JD Worldwide-Lagardere (HK) Company Limited, will comprehensively expand its duty-free related business, capitalizing on Lagardere's years of offline experience in traditional travel retail and luxury retail operations, as well as JD's industry-leading ability of supply chain, retail infrastructure, and omni-channel operation capabilities.

The official boutiques, strategically located in Paris and Lyon, will offer a comprehensive range of products to travelers, allowing them to equip themselves with Paris 2024 items upon arrival and purchase unique souvenirs upon departure from France.

lagardere travel retail jd

Seven boutiques in total are planned, with five already open at Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport, and in Paris, at Gare de Lyon, Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles RER metro station and Gare Montparnasse. The remaining two boutiques will be located at the esplanade of the Eiffel Tower and Gare de l’Est. The stores will offer a wide range of licensed Paris 2024 products, including fashion items for men, women, and children such as T-shirts, sweaters, and caps, as well as souvenirs like plush toys, mugs, and water bottles, along with travel bags and pillows.

In addition to the official boutiques, 200 strategically located Relay shops in train stations, metros, and airports in cities hosting Olympic competitions provide a comprehensive range of licensed Paris 2024 items which may vary depending on the store.

On top of selling Paris 2024 products, Relay shops embrace the Olympic Games through unique activations with partner brands Visa and Coca Cola (both official Olympic Games partners), allowing travelers to win tickets to attend the Olympic Games. In this way Relay reaffirms its commitment to providing travelers with more than just products to transform travel into enjoyable and personal experiences. This exclusive contract with OCOG reinforces Lagardère Travel Retail’s commitment to customers by offering local souvenir products at the heart of current events, confirming Relay’s ambition to stay one step ahead of travelers’ desires.

Fraport AG has partnered with IT consulting services provider, CGI to accelerate the digitalisation of Frankfurt Airport (FRA) under a five-year framework agreement.

This project aims to enhance the passenger experience at Frankfurt Airport while increasing its overall competitiveness through the use of new digital business models and technologies.

Specifically, the framework agreement will move more of the airport’s applications to the cloud as part of a strategic IT realignment.

Frankfurt Airport is currently Germany’s largest aviation hub

Fraport and CGI will also work together to integrate additional advanced technologies such as intelligent automation and artificial intelligence within the airport’s operations.

Fraport hopes to leverage these technologies to support airport staff in their daily work, particularly for ground handling services.

“We are realigning Frankfurt Airport technologically—a major task and, with CGI, we have found a flexible and competent partner. We are excited about working with CGI on new ideas and solutions that we can implement together quickly and securely.”

Throughout the airport’s cloud transformation, CGI will provide consulting, cloud solutions and managed IT services to help ensure an optimal and timely migration process.
