Arsenal and Chelsea Women will tour the United States this August as part of a summer series of matches broadcast exclusively around the world by DAZN Sports.

Arsenal will play National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) side Washington Spirit on August 18 before taking on their London rivals Chelsea the following Sunday. Both matches take place at Audi Field, Washington D.C. and will be streamed live and free globally on DAZN.

In addition, over the course of the visit, Arsenal will take part in a training camp at George Mason University in Fairfax County, a home-from-home for their Virginia-native Emily Fox. Otherwise, the team will be based in Washington D.C. from 15-26 August.

The matches come two weeks before Arsenal, who finished third in last season's Women's Super League, play two pivotal games in the First Qualifying Round for next season's UEFA Women's Champions League competition.

They hope the two games against high-quality opposition will provide them with the necessary match sharpness required as the qualifiers come three weeks before their competitive start of the season in the Women's Super League. Last season Arsenal went out in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, missing out on the lucrative income and prestige garnered from playing in the group stage.

They may face similar complaints regarding player welfare with the scheduling of the start of the camp coming just five days after some of their squad - like Fox, Canadian Cloé Lacasse, Spain's Laia Codina and their three Australians, Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross - could be playing in the Women's Olympic Football Final in Paris, which would involve six matches in seventeen days.

Nevertheless, the clubs will view the tour as an important vehicle in creating a global fancase for Arsenal and Chelsea. A sizeable crowd of 42,120 watched Arsenal play at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne and another 5,000 attended an open training session at AAMI Park in Melbourne during the trip.

Arsenal Managing Director, Richard Garlick said "To take our women’s team to the US for the first time on tour is another sign of great progress. We know from our recent trip to Australia that the interest and love for Arsenal Women stretches far and wide. We want to build on that and bring our United States supporters closer to the club."

Similarly, Washington Spirit CEO Kim Stone believes "this is a major step in growing the women’s game at home and abroad as the best in England face the best in the United States. We are very proud to offer global soccer followers unprecedented access to some of the top club competition in the world. We will welcome fans live at Audi Field or through our exclusive media partner, DAZN, who will stream the matches for free."

Co CEO of women's sports at DAZN, Hannah Brown added that "this deal marks another first for women’s football. Led by the team at the Washington Spirit – DAZN will be working with these clubs who are vanguards of the game."

Scheffler Holds on to Win Memorial for His 5th PGA Tour Title of the Year

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Winning has become a habit for Scottie Scheffler, except there was nothing typical about his victory Sunday at the Memorial.

He made only one birdie. He closed with a 2-over 74, his highest final round in two years. And victory wasn't assured until Scheffler had the mettle to put a firm stroke on a downhill putt from 5 feet above the hole to take out the break.

It went right in the heart for a one-shot victory over Collin Morikawa, and a handshake with tournament host Jack Nicklaus. Their exchange said it all.

“You're a survivor,” Nicklaus told him.

“Thanks,” Scheffler said. “Yeah, you made this place brutal today.”

Scheffler endured more stress than he wanted and got the victory everyone has come to expect, his fifth of the season — one week into the month of June — as he heads for another tough test next week in the U.S. Open.

Muirfield Village was so demanding with its ultra firm greens and swirling gusts throughout the afternoon that only six players broke par and the average score was a fraction under 75.

Scheffler, who started four shots ahead, never lost the lead. He never felt safe, either, not with Morikawa and Adam Hadwin on his heels all afternoon, and on a back nine where making par felt like hard work. Par is what it took on the 18th hole.

“This is a tough place to close out,” Scheffler said. “I didn’t do a whole lot great today, but I did enough.”

Just barely.

Scheffler was leading Morikawa by one shot and both hit approach shots that bounced hard and high off the green and into the rough. Both chipped to about 5 feet. Scheffler buried his putt to win, and the force of his fist pump to celebrate showed how tough this day was on him, and practically everybody.

Making the day even more special was a recent memory with Nicklaus at the Memorial, and cradling month-old son Bennett at his newborn's first PGA Tour event.

Scheffler thought back to 2021, when he missed a 6-foot putt on the final hole that ended any chance of a playoff. Walking off the green, he recalls Nicklaus telling him one day Scheffler will make the putt on 18 “and I'll be walking off to shake his hand.”

“It was pretty special thinking about that as I was walking over to shake his hand," he said.

Morikawa, who played in the final group of both majors this year, holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 12th hole and stayed on Scheffler's heels the rest of the way. He shot 71, the only one from the final 13 groups to break par.

Adam Hadwin was right there with them until closing with three straight bogeys for a 74 to finish alone in third.

Scheffler finished at 8-under 280 and won $4 million from this signature event and its $20 million purse. That pushes him over $24 million for the year, breaking the PGA Tour season earnings record — and it's barely June — that he set last year in this era of rising purses.

He also become the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to have won five times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open.

That's next week at Pinehurst No. 2, and Scheffler will go to the U.S. Open as a huge favorite. This was his 11th consecutive tournament with a top 10.

Morikawa picked up $2.2 million and now has a big cushion as he tries to sew up the fourth spot for the Americans going to Paris this summer for the Olympics.

Hadwin was within one shot of the lead until finishing the front nine with a pair of bogeys. He stayed in the hunt until closing with a pair of bogeys for a 74. Still, his third-place finish moves him ahead of Corey Conners for the second Canadian spot in the Olympics.

The world ranking after the U.S. Open determines who goes to Paris.

Scheffler had only one birdie — a 10-foot putt on the sixth hole — and he missed two birdie chances inside 10 feet on the back nine that could have provided a cushion.

But he made the biggest one on the par-3 16th.

Scheffler and Morikawa were both short of the super slick green some 90 feet away. Scheffler used putter and hit it weakly, coming up 15 feet short. Morikawa chipped from the collar and also hit a pedestrian chip some 20 feet short.

Morikawa missed his par putt, and Scheffler buried his for a two-shot lead.

Scheffler dropped his final shot on the 17th, however, and he was clinging again to a one-shot lead playing the tough 18th that he ended with one last putt.

Next up is the so-called toughest test in golf, and players felt like they just got finished with one at Muirfield Village.

“You could look at it one of two ways,” Hadwin said. “Either it's good prep for next week or we just got our butts kicked before going into next week.”

For Scheffler it's another victory, his 11th of his career and 12th worldwide. He has finished strong to win big or come from behind. He has pulled away when it was tight at the start. This time, he nearly lost a four-shot lead.

It was his highest closing round since a 74 in the British Open at St. Andrews in 2022. But it goes in the book as another big win against the strongest fields. Kevin McCarthy’s first target in his revenge tour: Nancy Mace

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. — Rep. Nancy Mace is no stranger to an intraparty battle. Now, her role in a big Republican fight last year — the ouster of Kevin McCarthy as House speaker — is complicating her primary Tuesday.

Mace, who is both a candidate seeking her third term and her own campaign manager, has earned the ire of the highest ranks of Republicans in the few short years she has been in Washington. In 2022, it was former President Donald Trump — though they’ve since patched things up . Then, a year later, she voted in historic fashion to boot a House speaker from her own party.

In fact, McCarthy, R-Calif., is the first thing Mace points to when she is asked about the stakes of her latest political fight against a primary challenger running with McCarthy’s support.

“It’s about revenge,” Mace said in an interview at her campaign headquarters. “It’s also about honesty and integrity. And my vote to oust Kevin McCarthy was about trust.”

Mace says she doesn’t regret the vote. McCarthy has said his support of GOP candidates challenging several of “the crazy eight,” as he calls the Republicans who voted against him, has nothing to do with political vendetta. Sources close to McCarthy point out he’s limited in what he can do directly, outside of giving money and advice. His spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for an interview. 

But operatives aligned with McCarthy are directing big money into those races through outside groups. Tuesday’s challenge to Mace is the first test, followed by House Freedom Caucus chair Bob Good’s primary in Virginia next week. Two other anti-McCarthy voters — Reps. Eli Crane of Arizona and Matt Gaetz of Florida — also face primary challengers this summer. 

Catherine Templeton said Mace’s vote against McCarthy was “absolutely” what sparked her to run against Mace in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. Templeton is also a Trump backer and was labor secretary in then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s Cabinet.

Before she launched her bid, Templeton met with Brian O. Walsh, a GOP political strategist and McCarthy ally. But she told The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston that she hasn’t talked to McCarthy “about taking out Congresswoman Mace, but I have asked him to help raise money.” McCarthy contributed to Templeton’s campaign through his leadership PAC.

Templeton also downplayed McCarthy’s role in the race. 

“Her antics have consequences,” Templeton said of Mace, defining the race as larger than one action, though clearly tied to that historic vote. “All due respect to Kevin McCarthy, who is, I’m sure, a wonderful man: Nobody’s paying attention to Kevin McCarthy in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.”

An emerging 2024 dynamic: Trump’s toughness vs. Biden’s compassion

The latest national CBS News/YouGov poll has an illuminating set of numbers on the election that go beyond the horse race (it’s still super close) and attitudes about Trump’s recent felony conviction (majorities say it was fair but also that it won’t factor into their votes). 

The eyebrow-raising finding in the poll: 66% of registered voters said they view Trump as “tough,” while only 28% of voters said the same of President Joe Biden. 

Meanwhile, a majority of voters — 52% — described Biden as being “compassionate,” compared with just 37% who said that about Trump.

Call it Trump’s toughness vs. Biden’s compassion. 

That frame plays out in NBC News’ own national polling earlier this year. Trump held a 35-point lead over Biden on the question of which candidate better secures the border and controls immigration. Yet Biden was ahead by 17 points on the question of which candidate better treats immigrants humanely and protects immigrant rights. 

It’s also reflected in focus groups, such as one NBC News recently observed of Latino voters in Arizona who had unfavorable views of both Biden and Trump. Their descriptions of Biden: “too old,” “useless” and “incompetent.” As for Trump? “Rude,” “arrogant” and “ridiculous.”

And it’s a helpful way to distill the chief perceived vulnerabilities of both men. For Biden, it’s questions about his age. In addition to the 28% of voters who said they view him as “tough,” just 26% saw him as being “energetic” in the CBS News/YouGov poll.

And Trump’s weaknesses are his rhetoric and his legal challenges, which include his conviction in the New York hush money case, as well as his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. 

What do swing voters want more from their president — toughness or compassion? The answer could very well decide who wins in November.
