There’s nothing about this family-friendly movie that’s outrageously offensive, but there’s nothing about it that’s particularly interesting, well-executed, or inventively conceived either.

A screenplay that never quite clicks on all cylinders. There are too many scenes dealing with relationships that really halt any momentum.

Journey 2 is simply magical.

Undeniably an exhilarating family friendly, action adventure that'll no doubt thrill younger audiences.

Like its predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a race against time to survive, but the inclusion of new characters adds a little more interest.

For a family, this is an agreeable Saturday outing, largely because director Brad Peyton doesn't set his sight higher than the material actually is.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is light, airy family entertainment that actually ends up being too light and airy.

It's a harmless, lighthearted film with wooden acting, a nice message about accepting your parents-whoever they are-and again, lots of ridiculous CGI.

Really good watch, would watch again, and can recommend.

Great casting choices, great subject matter, and plenty of production value.

When it comes down to it, I'm sure this is the movie that settled Dwayne Johnson as the guy for Jumanji.

Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens are really cute together and play off of each other really well. Michael Caine and Luis Guzmán both act really well with their character kids as well as Dwayne.

The biggest actual problem I have with this is the insistence in 3d technology. It is really blatant and really weird sometimes.

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here’s Captain Nemo’s Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble “Swiss Family Robinson,” which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ,” with only two connections: It’s inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather’s message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it’s in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean’s grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings “What a Wonderful World.” And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It’s not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne’s novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo’s submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn’t a “good” movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can’t think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Slashing screen time for mental health: Carlos Whittaker shares his unplugged journey

In his book, 'reconnected,' the author details his 7-week screen-free journey.

Carlos Whittaker explains why he went screen-free for seven weeks

The "Reconnected" author shares the startling discovery that led him to put down his phone and start his unplugged journey.

Ironically, it was a notification on his phone that prompted author and podcaster Carlos Whittaker to embark on a seven-week screen-free journey that would change his life. 

Whittaker, who lives in Nashville on a "suburban farm" with his wife, three children and dog, knew he used his phone a lot, but didn't consider it a problem until he sat down and did the math.

After getting an alert that he had averaged seven hours and 23 minutes of daily phone time that particular week, Whittaker realized that if he lived to be 85, he would spend more than a decade of his remaining life on the device.

In the summer of 2022, Whittaker embarked on a seven-week journey across the United States, navigating his life without the use of any screens.

He documented the mission in his latest book, "Reconnected: How Seven Screen-Free Weeks with Monks and Amish Farmers Helped Me Recover the Lost Art of Being Human," which was published on Sept. 10.

"That's exactly what I did," Whittaker told Fox News Digital in a Zoom interview. "I lived with these monks and the Amish, and it absolutely changed my life." 

The author spent two weeks at a monastery, two weeks with the Amish and three weeks with his family, living entirely without screens.

Before and after the experiment, Whittaker's brain was scanned and analyzed by neurologists – and he details those results in his book . 

Whittaker, who described himself as an evangelical Christian, was connected to St. Andrew's Abbey – a Catholic, Benedictine monastery in California – which allowed him to stay in a guest cabin for the first part of his journey.

Whittaker almost quit the experiment at the very beginning. 

"When you can't get out of your head by picking up your phone and scrolling TikTok or X or whatever it is, and you're stuck in your own thoughts – that's something we're not used to, and I definitely wasn't used to it," he said. 

This sudden digital detox led to "four days of panic," he said, as he experienced "panic attacks, night sweats, heart palpitations [and] jitters."

Not having his phone felt like "coming off the drug of knowledge and the drug of control," Whittaker said. 

But on day five of the experiment, something changed. 

"It literally felt like an elephant stepped off my chest and I could breathe again ," he said. "And I got it. But those first four days were the crazy days."

INCREASED USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TAKES MENTAL HEALTH TOLL ON TEENS

In the book, Whittaker writes about how he initially felt uncomfortable living among Benedictine monks and found their prayer routine to be "boring." (Benedictine monks pray the Liturgy of the Hours, a daily prayer, at different times throughout the day.)

"I'll be blatantly honest, the first two days, I was bored out of my mind," he said. "We were praying five or six times a day."

"When you lower the volume of life, the volume of God goes up."

But eventually, he said, "I got it," adding that he has kept up the practice of praying the Liturgy of the Hours even after leaving the monastery.

"I missed it so much. It created a rhythm in my day," he said. "It gave some stability to some parts of my faith that maybe were unstable."

"What I learned from the monks is that every day, I had multiple opportunities to lower the volume of life and slow down — and when you lower the volume of life, the volume of God goes up," he said.

After his time at the monastery, Whittaker moved to the Midwest and lived for two weeks with an Amish family. (The Amish are a religious group that eschews most modern technology.)

Getting permission to live among the Amish, however, was more challenging. Whittaker was rejected by many people he contacted, as they were wary of an outsider temporarily joining their community.

"We finally ended up with a sheep-farming family that was like, 'Absolutely, come on in,'" he said. "And they helped me become as Amish as I could in 14 days." 

Throughout his seven screen-free weeks, Whittaker journaled and recorded videos each night on a small, screen-free camera.

Those videos will be compiled into a documentary, also called "Reconnected," that will be released on Oct. 25, he said.

While Whittaker has largely returned to life as it was before his experiment – including the use of a smartphone – he has made changes that he says have improved his life. 

"This book isn't about how bad phones are. This book is about how beautiful it is on the other side of the phone," he told Fox News Digital.

"Instead of setting up all these rules and restrictions for my screen time, once I fell in love with wondering, with noticing, with savoring, with 90-minute meals – with all of these things I was doing without my phone, I just picked up my phone less."

Today, Whittaker uses his phone about 3-½ hours a day, four hours less than before the experiment.

BALANCING THE PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA SCREEN TIME

"I've legitimately added half of my life back, half of the years back that I was losing before." 

4 tips to cut down on screen time

Whittaker offered a few tips for those who want to limit their daily screen time.

1. Charge your phone outside the bedroom 

"The first thing everyone needs to do is stop charging your phone in the bedroom and start charging it in another room," he said. 

"Buy an alarm clock. I know it's the craziest, most old-fashioned thing, but all it's going to do is wake you up."

2. Don't pick up your phone right away

People should avoid looking at their phones for "at least 30 minutes in the morning," Whittaker suggested.

"Just drink your coffee . When you're just drinking the coffee, [it] tastes so much better. You get to savor it," he said. 

3. Subscribe to print media

Whittaker subscribes to a newspaper rather than relying on the constant buzz of a smartphone app. 

4. Use the 'do not disturb' feature

"I've actually placed my smartphone in permanent 'do not disturb,' so I never get a 'ding,'" he told Fox News Digital.
