The fifth album from shoegaze giants Slowdive contains the duality of a familiar internal language mixed with the exaltation of new beginnings. everything is alive is transportive, searching and aglow, the work of a classic band continuing to pitch its unmistakable voice to the future. Six years after the group’s monumental self-titled album, everything is alive finds Slowdive—vocalists and guitarists Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead, guitarist Christian Savill, bassist Nick Chaplin, and drummer Simon Scott—locating evermore contours of its immersive, elemental sound.

The new record began with Halstead in the role of writer and producer, working on demos at home. Experimenting with modular synths, Halstead originally conceived of everything is alive as a “more minimal electronic record.” Slowdive’s collective decision-making ultimately drew the group back towards their signature reverb-drenched guitars, but that first concept seeped into the compositions. “As a band, when we’re all happy with it, that tends to be the stronger material,” Halstead says. “We’ve always come from slightly different directions, and the best bits are where we all meet in the middle.” The convergence of five unique characters has made the sound. “Slowdive is very much the sum of its parts,” Goswell adds. “Something unquantifiable happens when the five of us come together in a room.”

Slowdive returns with new album, first single “Kisses” — and North American tour dates

Shoegaze titans Slowdive today announced they’ll release their fifth album, Everything Is Alive , this September and it’s preceded by the dreamy first single “Kisses” — which you can hear below — and will be supported by a just-announced North American tour this fall.

The Dead Oceans label will release the nine-song album on Sept. 1 — it’s the band’s second post-reunion record — and it can be preordered now in a variety of vinyl, CD and cassette formats , as well as digitally .

The band’s 15-date North American tour — which follows summer dates in the U.K. Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan — opens Sept. 23 in Toronto and continues through a Los Angeles date on Oct. 14, and it will be followed by six dates in the U.K. and Ireland in late October and early November.

See the full tour dates below. Tickets for the newly announced shows go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday, June 23. More details at slowdiveofficial.com .

The new album is described by the label as featuring “the duality of a familiar internal language mixed with the exaltation of new beginnings. Everything is Alive is transportive, searching and aglow, the work of a classic band continuing to pitch its unmistakable voice to the future.”

The band — vocalists and guitarists Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead, guitarist Christian Savill, bassist Nick Chaplin and drummer Simon Scott — started work on what was envisioned as a “more minimal electronic record,” the label says, but eventually gravitated back toward its “signature reverb-drenched guitars, but that first concept seeped into the compositions.”

Speaking of that process, Halstead says: “As a band, when we’re all happy with it, that tends to be the stronger material. We’ve always come from slightly different directions, and the best bits are where we all meet in the middle.” Goswell adds: “Slowdive is very much the sum of its parts. Something unquantifiable happens when the five of us come together in a room.”

Yes I have loved their post-reunion work! Most excellent.

I saw them last time out, doesn’t look like there’s a good option for me this tour. Oh well!

I REALLY wanted to like this, but it just sounds like the shit that’s been trotted out over the last dozen years by people far less talented that Slowdive.

Be YOU, not the Millenials or Zs who are simply parroting you.

Slowdive Add Tour Dates, Share Video for New Song “Alife”: Watch

By Nina Corcoran

Slowdive band

Prior to the release of their new album, Everything Is Alive , this Friday (September 1), Slowdive have announced a series of 2024 tour dates and shared the video for their new song “Alife.” Find those dates and the new video below.

“‘Alife’ is one of the first tunes we finished for the record,” Neil Halstead said in a statement. “Shawn Everett did a really nice job with the mix. We tried so many times to figure out a good mix by ourselves and couldn’t do it… it sort of had us beaten until Shawn stepped in. We decided if he could handle that one he could probably do the whole record. Our friend Jake Nelson did a really nice animation for this song; it takes some of the imagery from the artwork and digs a little deeper into that.”

Everything Is Alive follows 2017’s Slowdive and features “ Kisses ,” “ Skin in the Game ,” and “ The Slab .”

Slowdive Debut Video for “Kisses” From New Album “Everything is Alive” — Plus Announce North American Tour

Maybe there’s a car, there Driving away from here Taking all the ghosts The hurt…

S lowdive , the iconic shoegaze ensemble, has pulled back the curtain on their eagerly awaited fifth studio album, Everything Is Alive, set for release on September 1st via Dead Oceans. The band has also introduced their latest single, “Kisses”, and revealed an ambitious tour for 2023

The inception of Everything Is Alive dates back to the fall of 2020, with the band embarking on a two-year recording journey across the UK. The album, produced by lead guitarist-songwriter Neil Halstead, was partially crafted in his home studio, with six of the eight tracks benefiting from the expertise of Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett.

The record is a heartfelt tribute to Rachel Goswell’s mother and drummer Simon Scott’s father, both of whom passed away in 2020. Goswell shared in a statement, “There were some profound shifts for some of us personally,” alluding to processing the life-changing losses. The album is a sonic exploration of life and hope, reflecting the deep personal transitions experienced by the band members. Despite the undercurrent of melancholy, the album is a beacon of hope, encapsulating an overarching sense of thankfulness. Goswell further added, “Those crossroads are reflected in the many-layered emotional tenor of Slowdive’s music; ‘Everything Is Alive’ is heavy with experience, but each note is poised, wise, and necessarily pitched to hope. Its unique alchemy subtly embodies both sadness and gratitude, groundedness and uplift.”

Neil Halstead also shared his thoughts on the album: “It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now. The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful.”

The music video for the album’s lead single, “Kisses,” is a dreamlike journey through Naples. It features a young protagonist driving around the city with various passengers on the back of their scooter, with the backdrop of notable landmarks such as the Castel Sant’Elmo, football murals, and Mt Vesuvius.

On filming “Kisses,” the director Noel Paul stated: “If this video evokes emotion, it’s largely due to our excellent cast. In particular Charlie and Claudia, two courageous and beautiful souls who threw themselves into their roles and set a tone of fearless vulnerability.

Watch the video for “Kisses” below:

In addition to her work with Slowdive, Rachel Goswell has been part of the supergroup Beachy Head. This collective, formed by members of Slowdive, Flaming Lips, The Soft Cavalry, and Casket Girls, includes Goswell and Christian Savill from Slowdive, Matt Duckworth from Flaming Lips, Ryan Graveface from Casket Girls, and Steve Clarke from The Soft Cavalry. Their eponymous debut album was launched in April 2021 via Graveface’s own record label.

Goswell also recently joined forces with Drab Majesty for their EP, An Object in Motion,  contributing her ethereal vocals to the first single, “Vanity.”

Slowdive’s 2023 tour is set to span the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and North America, including a debut performance at Glastonbury. The North American leg of the tour will kick off in Toronto on September 23rd, with performances in cities like New York, Chicago, DC, Philadelphia, San Franciso, and Seattle, before wrapping up in Los Angeles on October 14th.

Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, June 23 at 10 AM local time. For more info, go to slowdiveofficial.com.

They film you rolling through stop signs and fine you $100. One SoCal agency’s $1-million idea

Stop signs and warnings to not violate them or face a $100 fine in Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades.

The citation that Andrew Rice received in the mail looked like a traffic ticket, including a photo of his license plate. But the mail didn’t come from any police or city agency he recognized.

Back in July, one of his adult kids visited Temescal Canyon park near Pacific Palisades. A camera recorded Rice’s Prius rolling through a stop sign at the park’s parking lot, resulting in a $100 fine for Rice, the registered owner of the car.

Yet it was not a violation of the vehicle code. It won’t affect Rice’s driving record, and it was not a traffic citation. Instead, it was a fine for violating park rules, issued by the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority — a local public agency dedicated to protecting local parkland.

Rice is not alone. The agency collects more than $1 million a year from such tickets.

“This agency that is ostensibly all about land preservation and public access, things I totally support, is sending fake $100 tickets to the people they claim to serve,” Rice said.

But the citations are real and can have real consequences. If they’re not paid on time, the debts are sent to a collection agency, and unpaid fines can affect credit scores. Rice missed the initial notice in the mail, he said, possibly tossing out the letter thinking it was junk mail. He discovered the fine in March, seven months later, after it was sent to a collection agency.

Like Rice, thousands of other drivers are receiving similar citations from the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority after visiting their parks. The controversial practice was first reported by KTLA-TV .

Tasked with preserving and managing open space and parkland, the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority is a local government organization that manages more than 75,000 acres of land and more than 100 parks. It was created in 1985 in a partnership between state and local park and recreation agencies.

With seven cameras installed in four parks, the organization issues about 17,000 citations a year, bring in about $1.1 million every year, said Dash Stolarz, spokesperson for the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority. That means that the agency tasked with preserving free open space, parkland and coastal access issues about 47 stop sign citations a day.

“It’s set up like a turnstile to generate money,” Rice said. “It’s a money machine for the park.”

The cameras were installed at Temescal Gateway Park, Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park, Top of Topanga and Franklin Canyon Park in 2007.

Santa Barbara, California-Montecito residents placed boulders and plants along the sides of East Mountain Drive and Riven Rock Road, near the Montecito Hot Springs trailhead. Visitors must park on the street alongside residents' houses once the small trailhead parking area fills up. Multiple residents of a wealthy Santa Barbara County neighborhood have placed obstructions along a public right-of-way near a popular trailhead, taking up spaces that hikers could otherwise use to park. Stolarz, spokesperson for the agency, said the cameras and citations were not installed to make revenue but as a safety measure and to enforce the park rules.

“How are you supposed to keep people safe if you can’t enforce the rules of the park,” she said. “If you don’t get the cars to stop, everyone thinks they don’t have to stop.”

The $1.1 million generated from the fees is only a fraction of the agency’s multimillion-dollar budget. This year, the 2023-24 budget showed the agency expected to see more than $77 million in grants. The money from the fees goes back into maintaining the parks, she said.

However, the citations generated more revenue than parking fees ($920,000), more than double the revenue from leases and licensing ($460,000), and nearly as much as the funds generated from filming fees ($1.25 million), according to the agency budget.

With the thousands of citations issued each year, however, Rice said he feels the $100 fine is similar to a “regressive tax on their user base.”

“For a lot of people who go there to go hiking or have a picnic, $100 is a lot of money,” he said.

Rice is also concerned that, like him, many people toss out the initial citation thinking it is junk mail.

He’s also concerned that, unlike traffic cameras used by cities and law enforcement agencies, the tickets are issued to the owner of the vehicle, not the driver. Because the citations are rule violations, instead of traffic tickets, the park agency is not required to meet vehicle code requirements for operating traffic cameras and identifying drivers when it issues the citations.

Red light cameras, for example, require law enforcement agencies to confirm the identity of the driver when tickets are issued.

The citations also state that, despite the similarity, it’s “not issued for any violation of any provision of the California Vehicle Code.”

“Neither the issuance of this Citation nor its non-payment will be reflected in your official driving record,” it reads. Not paying, however, can result in “an adverse report on your credit rating.”

The Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority has been sued by ticketed motorists over the citations and was named in a class-action lawsuit challenging the validity of the tickets.

In July 2015, however, the California 2nd District Court of Appeals ruled that the agency could issue the tickets under the Public Resources Code and it can enforce its own rules to manage park lands.

“This [ruling] affirms that the MRCA has the authority to enforce its ordinance, including the photo enforcement program,” Stolarz said in an email.

In an interview, Stolarz said tickets are issued by park rangers for violations such as parking, speeding and stop sign violations.

She added that the cameras were placed in locations identified in traffic studies as “hot spots,” or with repeat violations.

The intersections with cameras, she said, also include multiple signs that alert drivers about the stop signs and the camera enforcement.

“It’s very well marked,” she said.
