Brief History of Galeries Lafayette

Galeries Lafayette is an upscale Parisian department store chain that sells clothing, accessories, cosmetics, home decor, gourmet foods, and much more. The store’s beginnings date back to 1893 when two cousins from the Alsace, Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn, decided to open a small haberdashery shop in Paris on rue Lafayette.

In the mid-nineteenth century, department stores were popular and were spreading across the big cities of Europe and the United States. Instead of shopping at lots of small shops, consumers could now go to one large department store and get all the things they needed.

In the early 20th century, Bader and Kahn would greatly expand their store and it would eventually become a department store. Architectural renovations would lead to the addition of a number of Art Nouveau features, including a grand staircase and its famous central glass dome. Galeries Lafayette would soon become a premier shopping destination in the city, joining the ranks of the other great department stores in Paris, including Le Bon Marché, Printemps, and La Samaritaine.

Galeries Lafayette continues to be a popular shopping destination in Paris today. The store has also become a tourist attraction due to its architecture and offered in-store activities such as macaron baking classes and weekly Paris fashion shows .

Today the original flagship store is now spread over 3 buildings along Boulevard Haussmann. There are also two other store locations in Paris (one on Champs-Elysées and one in Beaugrenelle) and over 50 Galeries Lafayette locations across France. There are also several international locations of the store.

Although there are three Galeries Lafayette stores in Paris, this article just focuses on things to do at the Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann store. Some of these things apply to the other stores as well, but many are unique to the large flagship store.

How to Get to Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann?

Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann is located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris (Opéra District). The department store is easy to reach by public transit or taxi from central Paris. There is also an on-site parking garage if you are driving yourself.

For assistance in using public transit, you can check the RATP website which covers the Meto, RER, buses, and tramways. We also find that having a laminated street map that includes a metro map helpful when navigating Paris.

The main store’s address is: Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann, 40 Boulevard Haussmann 75009 Paris.

The other two store buildings, Galeries Lafayette Homme (Men’s store; 48 Boulevard Haussmann) and Galeries Lafayette Maison (Home & Food store; 35 Boulevard Haussmann), are located next to the main store.

Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann by Paris Metro:

There are several Metro stations within a short walk of the store. The closest station to Galeries Lafayette is Chaussée d’Antin (Line 7 and 9), but Opéra (Line 3, 7 and 8) and Havre – Caumartin (Line 3 and 9) are also located about a 3 minute walk away. Trinité (Line 12) is about an 8 minute walk away.

Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann by RER

The closest RER line station is Auber on RER A which is about a 2-minute walk away from the store. Another close station is Haussmann St. Lazare along RER E which is about a 5 minute walk away.

Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann by Bus

There are a number of bus stops within a short walking distance of the store. Bus lines you could take include lines 20, 21, 22, 26, 32, 42, 53, 68, and 98. Bus stops located within a 5 minute walk include Gluck-Haussmann, Opéra – Scribe, Auber, Paris – Opéra, Opéra – Rue Halevy, and Opéra.

Most of the Paris sightseeing buses also make stops nearby, normally in front of the Palais Garnier (Paris Opera). These include both the Big Bus and Tootbus hop-on hop-off buses. It is about a 5 minute walk from the Palais Garnier opera house to the department store.

Galeries Lafayette by Taxi, Minicab, or Rideshare

There are a number of taxi, minicab, and rideshare services available in Paris. In addition to just hailing a taxi, you can also arrange a taxi via an app or online via Uber, G7 , or Free Now .

If you need any assistance when leaving the store, the Concierge can help you arrange a taxi if needed.

Parking at Galeries Lafayette

There is a parking garage at Galeries Lafayette that is currently operated by Indigo. The entrance is off Boulevard Haussmann in front of the Lafayette Homme building (48 Boulevard Haussmann). The parking garage is normally open 24/7. There is a parking fee and the parking fee amount depends on the length of stay. You pay upon exiting the parking garage.

NOTE : There are three Galeries Lafayette store locations across Paris, so be sure you have the right one if looking up the address or using a GPS for directions. The main flagship store is Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann.

10 Things to Do at Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann

There are lots of things to do at Galeries Lafayette and we have included our top things to do at the store to help you plan your trip.

Shopping is of course the main reason why many visitors come to Galeries Lafayette. Galeries Lafayette mainly sells fashion items, fragrances and cosmetics, gourmet food, and home furnishings. But you can also find souvenirs, luggage, toys, books, and even small appliances at the store.

Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann is a huge department store spread out across 3 multi-floor buildings offering over 3,000 brands.

The three buildings are:

  • Galeries Lafayette / Magasin Coupole (Main Store Building) : Women’s fashion and accessories, dome, cosmetics, jewelry, children’s fashion and toys, souvenirs, main shopper services, books, luggage
  • Galeries Lafayette Homme / Magasin L’Homme (Men’s Store): Men’s fashion, accessories, and shoes
  • Galeries Lafayette Maison / Magasin Maison & Gourmet (Home & Gourmet Store ): Food, home decor, home furnishings, linen, cookware, small appliances

The main department store (women’s) and Men’s Store buildings are located next to one another and are connected by an enclosed bridge that you can walk across. The Home & Gourmet Store is located across the street. You can see a store map here .

Although the department store definitely carries more of the luxury and expensive brands (e.g. Chanel, Gucci, Armani, Cartier, Louis Vuitton), they do have some lines that fall into the moderate to even budget price levels. The store has even recently launched a second-hand section, called (Re)Store, where you can buy lightly used and vintage clothing and fashion accessories.

The store also regularly has pop-up shops and spaces in its store as a way of introducing newer and smaller fashion brands as well as highlighting new collections from established brands. They also do pop-up shops for food and drinks as well.

Just note that the flagship Haussmann store can be overwhelming as it can get very crowded, especially in the summer and around the holidays. Not only is it a store, but it’s also a popular tourist attraction. There are sometimes lines just to get into some of the luxury accessory shops for brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Prada. So just be prepared for that.

When we really need to shop for something and want some peace, we tend to go to one of the other Galeries Lafayette locations. There are 2 other Galeries Lafayette store locations in Paris (one on Champs-Elysées and one in the Beaugrenelle Paris shopping mall) and over 50 store locations across France. Although the other stores tend to be less crowded than the flagship store, most are smaller and offer less selection.

If you are wanting some help finding some items for your wardrobe, the store offers a personal shopping service . There is also a virtual live video version of this service available for those who can’t travel to Paris. I believe that both basic personal shopper services are still offered for free, although you can pay more for private stylist services at the store if you are looking for a more VIP experience. You need to reserve an appointment in advance.

Remember if you spend over 100 euros at the store and live outside of the European Union, you may be eligible to get a 12% VAT refund on your purchases. There is a desk at Galeries Lafayette that can help you with tax refunds. You can also see this page for more information on VAT refunds and how to apply.

Admire the Dome

Today, the 43-meter (141 feet) high stained-glass dome is an icon of the Galeries Lafayette store. It is located in the center of the main building (Coupole Store). Many people come to the store just to look at the beautiful Art Nouveau dome.

The main store actually gets its building name, Magasin Coupole or Coupole Store, from its dome. The word coupole in French means cupola or dome in English.

However, the dome has not always been a part of the store. The store underwent a huge renovation in 1912 by Ferdinand Chanut to expand it and decorate it in the Paris Art Nouveau style. The dome was designed by master glassmaker Jacques Grüber and is made of stained glass and lead mountings. The pattern is meant to imitate a large flower and the stained glass panels are divided into 10 sections.

After renovations, the store was reopened in October 1912, and here is how the store website describes the opening day: “Golden light, filtered through the domed roof, would flood the grand hall and set the products aglow.”

The dome is still the architectural focal point today and lets light illuminate the central part of the store. Some of the glass has been lost over the years (some was hidden too well during World War 2) and many pieces have had to be replaced or restored over the years.

Each year during the holiday season, a Christmas tree is suspended from the dome. This is a tradition dating back to 1976. So the holidays are a popular time to come see the dome as the decorations change each year.

You can see the dome from any floor of the building, but you get the best overall views from the lower floors. However, from the upper floors, you can get a better peek at the details. If you want to savor a view, you can grab some coffee or a juice at Joe & the Juice on the 2nd floor as the tables there provide great views of the dome and over the store’s ground floor below.

In 2018, for the holiday season, Galeries Lafayette built a 9-meter long glass walkway that stretches out under the dome from the 3rd floor of the store. This walkway, known as the Glasswalk, allows one to get a lovely view beneath the Art Deco dome. Just note there are often lines here and the time you can spend on the walkway is limited by staff to allow everyone a chance to walk here and take photos.

Paris is full of wonderful architecture and art, but the dome remains one of our favorite architectural details you can see for free in the city. Even if you are just walking by the store, it’s worth taking 10 minutes to walk into the store to admire this beautiful dome.

Attend a Fashion Show

The Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann holds a weekly fashion show. Here models show off the latest ready-to-wear fashion collections available in their stores from brand names such as Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Kooples, Ralph Lauren, and Minelli.

While it’s not like attending a runway show during Paris Fashion Week, it is an entertaining 30-minute show that most fashion lovers will enjoy. They dim the lights, put on music, and have models show off a number of pieces. The clothes change with the seasons, and each show normally features 30 to 40 different looks.

If you want to know more about the experience, you can read our article about attending the Galeries Lafayette fashion show . We’ve been a few times over the years.

The show generally lasts for about 30 minutes and takes place every Friday afternoon (normally at 3pm) throughout the year. Sometimes in summer they hold it twice a week. But this obviously means that if you want to attend, you will need to make sure that the dates and times of your trip align with the show schedule.

You can check available dates and book tickets online here . You need to make a reservation and book your tickets in advance. The tickets often sell out, especially in the summer months.

The fashion show is currently held in the Salon Opéra on the 4th floor of the main building. You’ll want to arrive at least 15 minutes early to check-in and get in line before the show starts. Be sure to bring proof of your reservation (note phone reception can be sketchy inside the store so I’d recommend either printing it or saving it to your smartphone) and a photo ID.

Note that if you have a Paris Pass (or plan to purchase one), the Galeries Lafayette fashion show is included as part of your pass. But you do still need to book tickets in advance. Once you have the pass, you can read how to reserve your free tickets here .

Have a Meal or Coffee

Galeries Lafayette has several cafes and restaurants that you can stop at to have a meal. These range from fine dining and champagne and caviar sort of places to coffee shops and a cafeteria. There are also takeaway meal options available.

Cuisine types offered vary and include French, Mediterranean, American, and Asian. I don’t think any of the restaurants require reservations, but reservations can be made at some of the sit-down restaurants to ensure a table. The cafes and restaurants do change fairly regularly, and you can see the current options here .

If you are just looking for a drink there are places you can stop to have coffee, tea, juice, wine, alcoholic drinks, or a soft drink. In the summer months, they usually have pop-up restaurants and a cafe on the rooftop terrace so you can enjoy a drink or meal there.

There are food and drink options in all three of the buildings, but the main food options are in the main Coupole building and the Gourmet building.

Enjoy the Rooftop Terrace View

You can head up to the 8th floor of the Galeries Lafayette Coupole Store (Main Store) to enjoy a nice view over Paris. You can see lots of Paris from here, including Opéra Garnier, the Eiffel Tower, Sacré Cœur, and Notre Dame. You also see the very top of the store’s dome from here.

This isn’t our favorite view of Paris, but it is still a very nice view overlooking the city. Certainly worth the effort to visit if you are at Galeries Lafayette.

The rooftop is usually open to the public and is free to visit. It is open the same hours that the store is open. I believe that the only way to access the terrace is to take the stairs from the 6th floor. You can reach the 6th floor by escalator, stairs, or elevator, and then take the stairs the rest of the way up.

In the warmer months, they often have food, snacks, and drinks on offer here that you can enjoy while sitting on the terrace. So summer is a particularly nice time to visit and enjoy the terrace here.

Buy Souvenirs

Even if you are not looking for anything for yourself, it can be a good place to get a nice gift or souvenir for friends and family. You can find a bit of everything here from miniature Eiffel Tower keyrings to luxury handbags to a box of gourmet French tea.

If you are looking for classic types of souvenirs, you can head to the Souvenirs de Paris boutique located on the 6th floor of the main building. This store includes all types of things from mugs and keychains to candles and books. They also tend to have gifting stuff available on the main floor of the store during the holidays.

But you can find great gifting items in any section of the store. Popular gift items include perfumes, handbags, scarves, gourmet food items, kitchen utensils, home decor items, wine, jewelry, belts, and cosmetics. For example, we’ve bought scarves, bread knives, cider, and backpacks here as gifts over the years.

Learn How to Make Macarons (or Cook French Classics)

Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann regularly holds cooking, baking, and pastry classes and workshops. One of the most popular is their French macaron bakery workshop.

If you are looking for a fun and sweet experience at the department store, you might consider joining their macaron bakery class . This 1.5 hour class teaches you in a step-by-step manner how to make these delicious French confections.

We did the macaron class here a few years ago and had a lot of fun. The instructors show you how to do everything and the shells are made together as a class. But then everyone individually makes the fillings and assembles their own macarons. At the end, each person gets to take home four macarons and the recipes.

Instructions during the macaron classes are generally given in both English and French. But our class was just in English as everyone understood English in our class.

Just note, like in most macron classes in Paris, you don’t do everything on your own as the instructor helps make the shells with piping help from the whole group. So the class is at the level of most home cooks who just want to learn and have fun rather than someone who is already an expert baker.

The class is also great for older kids and suitable for those age 12 and older. But there is also a macron making family class offered for those with kids of any age.

Of course, if you would rather just eat macarons without having to make them, you can buy macarons (and other sweet treats) from Pierre Hermé. The macarons are sold in both the Main Store and in the Home & Gourmet Store at Galeries Lafayette.

The store also regularly holds cooking classes and pastry classes in the Lafayette Maison & Gourmet Store on various classic French dishes. Note that most of these are offered in both French and English, but some are French only.

If you are interested in any of these cooking classes or workshops, you will need to book them in advance to guarantee a spot.

Take a Guided Historical Tour

If you are interested in the history and architecture of Galeries Lafayette, then you might consider taking one of the guided heritage tours offered by the store.

This history of Galeries Lafayette dates back to 1893 when cousins Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn opened a small haberdashery shop on the corner of rue La Fayette and rue de la Chaussée d’Antin in Paris.

The guided heritage tours include information about the history of the store, its founders, the architecture, and how the store has evolved over the years. The store has changed a lot from the beginning in terms of the buildings, the merchandise, and its business model. It has gone through many turbulent times such as the World Wars. During World War 2, all of the Jewish staff, including the owners, were forced to resign under the Vichy government.

Architecture is a big focus in the tours as Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann is the most famous example of an Art Nouveau department store in Paris. As you tour the store, you’ll learn of the main architects, including Georges Chedanne and his apprentice Ferdinand Chanut, and others who helped create the major Art Nouveau elements such as designer Louis Majorelle (staircase) and glassmaker Jacques Gruber (the beautiful glass cupola).

These guided tours last about 1.5 hours and begin before the store opens to the public. They start outside the store and then head inside to explore the interior. The tour includes both public areas of the store as well as behind-the-scenes areas that are not usually accessible to the public.

Tours are available in both French and English. They are usually given on Saturday and Sunday mornings only. To join the tour, you must book in advance to reserve a spot.

Enjoy the Art & Decor

The Galeries Lafayette is a great place to wander around to just enjoy the art and decor here. Even from the outside, you can enjoy the shop window displays and inside there is often art exhibited in the store. Not to mention the beautiful Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture and decor that can be enjoyed throughout the main store.

The holidays are definitely the best time to come to enjoy the store’s decorations. At this time of year the shop windows generally have the most over-the-top displays and the Christmas tree is out. Each year, since 1976, a Christmas tree has been suspended upside from the dome. The theme of the decorations changes each year.

In 2001, Galeries Lafayette opened Galerie des Galeries, a free-entry contemporary art gallery in the main store dedicated to exhibiting the relationships between art, fashion, and design. The store often has free-entry art shows or art exhibits displayed in the store. Last time we were there, there was a sculpture display.

Put Together a Gourmet French Picnic

Galeries Lafayette can be a great place to pick up food items for a lovely Parisian picnic. Head to the Home & Gourmet Store to pick up everything you would need for a luxury picnic.

For instance, you might grab a baguette, French cheeses, smoked salmon or local sausage, olives, fruit, and a prepared salad. For dessert, you might choose chocolate truffles or macarons. To wash it down, you have thousands of labels of wine to choose from.

If you are looking for a nearby spot to enjoy a picnic, we’d recommend the Tuileries Garden (Jardin des Tuilleries) which is about a 15 minute walk away from Galeries Lafayette. You can enjoy picnics here on the lawns (in most areas of the park) or find a nice bench to sit on. Or you might head further to Jardin du Champ de Mars (about a 25 minute Metro ride) if you prefer your picnic with a view of the Eiffel Tower !

Note that not all Paris parks and gardens allow picnicking or walking on the grass so just avoid areas that have signs that say do not walk on the grass or phrases like Pelouse Interdite .

You can also pick up groceries at Galeries Lafayette for cooking a lovely meal at home if your lodging has kitchen facilities. This isn’t the place to shop for low prices, but you can certainly find a lot of gourmet brands and local and regional specialties here. The ground floor has a market that includes meats, fish, poultry, cheeses, fruit and vegetables, spices, condiments, bread, and baked goods. You can also find a wide selection of wines, coffees, and teas.

HI! DOES THE DISCOUNT 10 PERCENT IF WE HAVE PARIS VISITE PASS (3 DAYS STILL VALID)? AND IF IT DOES, WHICH STORE DOES IT APPLICABLE? IS IT APPLICABLE TO YSL? THANK YOUU

January 7, 2023 at 3:44 am

So your question is a bit confusing as we don’t mentioned a 10% discount and the Paris Visite Pass that I am aware of is a transportation pass. But I think you may be talking about the Paris TurboPass which does say that it gives you a 10% voucher for shopping at Galeries Lafayette. If that is the pass you are asking about, I would contact TurboPass directly for the terms and conditions of how that works. I would guess with any sort of discount voucher that there are likely exclusions. We have never used that pass or know of any of our readers using it so I can’t say if that is still a valid offer or not, or how it work.

But if it is a different pass you are referring to, I would again, just contact the company directly about the discount, how it works, and if it applies to all purchases or if there are exclusions.

Anyway, sorry I couldn’t give you a more definite answer. If you find out the answer, do feel free to come back and reply and let us know. It may be helpful to other readers hoping to shop at Galeries Lafayette.

I am very much looking forward to visiting here after seeing you lovely photos – that dome!! Looks like a great place for some shopping and a girlfriend lunch. Maybe also a macaron making class!

My friend in Paris has a dog, do you know if are dogs allowed in the store?

August 12, 2022 at 4:27 am

Hi Georgia,

Yes, it is definitely a lovely location for shopping, lunch, and perhaps a macaron making class!

So dogs are allowed at Galeries Lafayette Paris in some areas of the department store (Coupole and Homme buildings only). But in general, I would not recommend visiting with a dog, especially if you plan to eat there or go to the gourmet store. I have not really seen many shoppers in the store with dogs and it is often crowded so not a great environment for them. Dogs would not be allowed in any of the cooking areas if you decide to do a macaron baking class or other cooking class or workshop for hygenic reasons.

Here are the current official pet rules at Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann:

Coupole and Homme stores: Animals permitted up to 7kg (15 pounds) Maison and Gourmet stores: Animals are not allowed

I believe dogs need to be kept on a lead or held. Of course, legal assistance and guide dogs are permitted in all the stores.

Hope that helps and wishing you a wonderful time in Paris! Jessica

Hi there, do you know if the glass sky walk will still be there in galeries lafayette in August 2022? Is it free to visit? Thanks!

May 18, 2022 at 5:48 am

So as I noted in the article above, the glass walkway, known as Glasswalk, was installed for the 2018 Christmas season at Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann. I am not sure if it is meant to be permanent but it was still up last time we checked and I haven’t heard any plans for it to be removed. So it should be there. But you can always call or email the store in August before your visit if you would like to check before visiting.

And yes, it has always been free to walk on as far as I am aware. We just had to wait in a short line and then time was limited on the walkway by staff to prevent crowding and to allow everyone a couple of minutes on the Glasswalk. It is generally open any time the store is open.

If you are interested in any of the other store activities, such as the fashion show or macaron baking class, you can plan your visit around them. As the Glasswalk isn’t really something you need to schedule around.

Hope that helps and wishing you a great visit to Paris!

Hi Jessica,

I am wondering if these fashion shows are for tourists or for the french locals? Also, how many people can attend? Is it a personal environment or more like a big event?

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us! It sounds very interesting.

May 6, 2022 at 2:56 am

Hi Laurence,

The fashion shows at Galeries Lafayette are mainly geared to tourists, but anyone can attend. The shows are not huge events but they fill up the room, I would say maybe 100 to 150 people are able to attend each show. You can see the photos for a sense of the seating and size of the catwalk. The show itself lasts about 30 minutes but you will want to be there at least 15 minutes before it begins to check in and get seated.

If you are looking for someone more geared to French speaking visitors or a more intimate group experience, Galeries Lafayette offers cooking and pastry classes that last 2 hours and I think have group sizes of 6 persons. You can select either English or French for those, and those are attended by both French and international tourists.

Hope that helps! Jessica

I visited the main location many years ago. It truly is a feast for the eyes and other senses. I love these grand old stores. We have one that is similar, although not as big, in the city where I grew up (Philadelphia). At Christmas they cover one of the walls with a light show, and someone comes and plays the organ live to accompany the music. I think these mini villages are a wonderful place to enjoy a day, especially exploring all these neat opportunities that you point out! I would find the historical tour fascinating! Also, no weather to contend with once you are there:)

May 3, 2022 at 10:11 am

Thanks for taking the time to comment and glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Galeries Lafayette in Paris! That store in Philadelphia sounds wonderful, and I am sure I will check it out if I make it back to Philly again.

I love old buildings like this and better yet when there are things that you can do there. These are definitely great places to enjoy on a rainy or cold day.

Glad you enjoyed our article 😉

Paris is a great city with so many wonderful places. Galeries Lafayette is not a must-see visit for everyone traveling to Paris but it is a great place for those who enjoy shopping and Art Nouveau architecture (dome), and it also offers a number of activities (cooking classes, fashion show, etc.).

I hope you get a chance to visit Paris and Galeries Lafayette soon!

Yes, they did have the shapewear by SKIMS the last time we were there in the main building at Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann. According to their store map, SKIMS is located in the women’s lingerie section on Floor 2 of the main building (Magasin Coupole).

We were thinking about doing a tour at the Opera Garnier and saw that Galeries Lafayette is very close by! So hoping to combine that visit with a visit here and the fashion show you mention. My niece who is age 14 is currently in a wheelchair and wondering if she would be able to attend? Do you happen to know, couldn’t see any info on their website.

Also are there any quick food options here that would be suitable for kids and adults?

Thanks, Laura

April 14, 2022 at 6:02 am

Sounds like you have a great trip to Paris coming up – and yes the Palais Garnier (Paris Opera) is only about a 4 to 5 minute walk from the Galeries Lafayette. So a good idea to combine the visits if you can. Just note that the fashion show is usually held every Friday so you will need to make sure your trip dates and visit to the opera can fit with that.

And yes, your niece should be able to attend as the organizers did tell me that the fashion show is wheelchair accessible. Most people take the escalators to get from floor to floor in the store, but you can also take the stairs or elevator. So you will just want to head to the elevators once you enter the main store (Coupole/one with women’s fashion) and take them to the 4th floor. When you check in for the fashion show you can let them know about the wheelchair so they can organize a spot for your niece.

Your niece should be able to visit most parts of Galeries Lafayette except the terrace. The terrace is not wheelchair accessible as I believe the only way to reach it is to take stairs for the last 2 floors. I believe that the Heritage tours are also not wheelchair accessible as the tour includes stairs and visiting the terrace.

Yes, there are a few options for casual food at Galeries Lafayette. Probably the quickest and easiest, especially if traveling with kids, is to head to the Lafayette Café. This is essentially just a cafeteria. They have different stations where you can get hot dishes, burgers, salads, pizza, pasta, fruit, desserts, etc. So there is a lot of variety so people can get different foods and it is a casual dining area.

Hope that helps, and wishing you a wonderful trip to Paris! Jessica

Going to Paris soon. It will be aspecial treat for my 8 and 11 year old granddaughters to make Macarons there. After suffering the Louvre with the parents!

April 12, 2022 at 6:56 am

Excited to hear you are planning to visit Paris with your family, sounds like a fun multi-generation trip! Yes, the Louvre can be a bit tiring for younger kids but a hands-on activity like macaron making can be fun for all ages.

You probably already saw this above in the article, but just note that the regular macaron baking class is for those age 12 and older, but there is specifically a family macaron class that you can book that is geared to children age 6 and older. That is generally 90 minutes long and held every Wednesday at Galeries Lafayette.

Galeries Lafayette Rooftop: The Best View in Paris

Last Updated on June 4, 2024 by April Nicole

Finding the most panoramic view of Paris has to offer is one of my all-time favorite activities to do here. After all, what better perspective from which to see a city’s layout? The Galeries Lafayette Rooftop Paris is the ideal location if, like me, you’re looking for a vantage point from which to watch Paris from above (with a view of the Eiffel Tower, of course!).

If you are in a hurry, here’s a summary of Galeries Lafayette rooftop:

Table of Contents (expand ⬇️)

Galeries Lafayette Department Store

The Galeries Lafayette Flagship Store may be found next to the Paris Opera House on Boulevard Haussmann in the 9th district of Paris. This department store, one of Paris’ “Grands Magasins ,” aka main storeis situated next to the similarly sizable “Printemps” shop.

The Galeries Lafayette store itself has a floor area of over 70,000 m2, and it features a wide selection of clothing, accessories, and home products in addition to other upscale and luxury items.

Théophile Bader and his cousin, who were both from the Alsace region of eastern France, created the renowned department store in 1895. Initially launched as a fashion-only shop, the establishment quickly expanded and extra floor space was bought (the initial haberdashery shop was only about 70m2).

A major extension ushered in a new look for the storefront, giving rise to the notion of Galeries Lafayette as a “luxury bazaar.” A beautiful art-nouveau glass dome was added, and the entire floor area received opulent art-nouveau fixtures.

Even for the shortest amount of time, the store is worth exploring because so much of the early 1900s décor is still present. Every year around the holidays, a massive Christmas tree is put up in the middle of the shop. Its dazzling lights instantly put you in the holiday spirit, even if you’re not quite in the “Christmas Cheer” mindset.

How to visit the Galeries Lafayette Rooftop Terrace

Address: 40 boulevard haussmann, 75009 paris, france galeries lafayette rooftop opening hours: monday – saturday 10am – 8:30pm, sunday 11am – 8pm.

The terrace at Galeries Lafayette on the 7th level of the flagship shop, which also houses the striking art nouveau cupola, is open every day, weather permitting, and is free to enter. It provides one of the best breathtaking view over Paris.

The terrace shuts too early in the summer months to take advantage of the golden hour, but if you’re lucky enough to visit in the autumn, spring, or winter, you could even be lucky enough to view the sunset over the roofs of Paris and beyond.

The Galeries Lafayette rooftop is a Parisian hotspot that you don't want to miss on your next trip! Read now for all the details!

Many of the city’s most notable attractions are seen from here. The ‘Terrasse’ after all boasts 180-degree views of the Tour Eiffel, the Ópera, and the roofs. Unfortunately, a wall prevents you from seeing the Sacré-Coeur from the Haussmann position. Nevertheless, the view of the city’s southern side more than makes up for it.

You might be surprised to discover that there are several other Galeries Lafayette outlets spread around France. Along with the Haussmann Flagship store, La Ville Rose, often known as Toulouse, is home to one of the most famous locations. One of Toulouse’s best kept secrets, it also has a rooftop deck.

What you’ll see at the Rooftop

You can get a close-up view of the Ópera Garnier from the rooftop terrace of Galeries Lafayette. A lot of cupolas and Hausmannesque building facades line the streetscape, which is also visually appealing.

The Butte of Montmartre and the Basilica of Sacré Coeur tower over the surrounding area to the north.

The Eiffel Tower can be seen when you cast your gaze off to the southwest.

If you have the time and are in Paris during the early-dark months, I advise visiting the Galeries Lafayette roof deck twice: once during the day and once after sunset.

Pro tip: The best time to visit in the evening is on the hour, when the Eiffel Tower’s strobe lights put on a show for five minutes at the top of the hour after sundown.

Restaurants to Enjoy

The Galeries Lafayette rooftop is a Parisian hotspot that you don't want to miss on your next trip! Read now for all the details!

Since 2020, the Paris rooftop has undergone a significant refurbishment that included the installation of infinity-pool-style windows into the rooftop terrace, greatly enhancing the view that can be enjoyed there. The rooftop is still accessible for free, but it is now also home to two restaurants.

The restaurant Créatures Galeries Lafayette Haussmann ran by Chef Julien Sebbag , is located on the left as you enter the rooftop area. This 100% vegetarian restaurant in Paris menu serves refreshing Mediterranean gourmet cuisine and beverages to go with it.

Another one of Julien Sebbag restaurants, the Tortuga Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann rooftop restaurant provides shared tapas-style cuisine and is the other rooftop dining option. Season 2 of Emily in Paris included one of the eateries on the Galeries Lafayette rooftop terrace.

Galeries Lafayette Rooftop Terrace: A view over Paris

One of my all-time favourite things to do in any given city is to search for some of the best rooftop views the place has to offer. After all, what better way to get an idea of the layout of a city than from above? If you’re like me, and you’re searching for a good place to glean a bird’s eye perspective in Paris (with a view onto the Eiffel Tower, bien sûr!) , then you need look no further than the Galeries Lafayette Rooftop Terrace.

Galeries Lafayette Rooftop Terrace: one of the best panoramic views of Paris, France

Galeries Lafayette Department Store

Located on Boulevard Haussmann, not far from the Paris Opera house, you’ll find the Galeries Lafayette Flagship Store. This department store is one of Paris’ ‘ Grands Magasins ‘ and sits right beside the equally large store of ‘ Printemps ‘.

Galeries Lafayette itself is set across a floor space of approximately 70,000m² and comprises of plenty of fashion, beauty and homeware pieces, as well as other luxury and upmarket goods.

The great department store was founded in 1895 by Théophile Bader and his cousin, who both hailed from the Alsace, in Eastern France. What was once opened as a store purely selling fashion, the store soon bloomed into a thriving business and more floor space was purchased (the original haberdashery store was only around 70m²) .

With a new expansion came a new style for the shop floor, and the idea of Galeries Lafayette as a ‘luxury bazaar’ was born. An art-nouveau glass dome was installed and similarly, lavish art-nouveau fittings were added to the entirety of the floor space.

Galeries Lafayette Christmas Tree: Festive Season in Paris

Much of this early 1900s decor remains to this day and the store is well worth a wander around, if only for the briefest of moments. Each year around Christmastime, a giant Christmas tree is installed in the very centre of the store and its twinkling lights easily evoke a festive mood, even if you’re not yet feeling the ‘Christmas Cheer’.

Open on a daily basis, weather permitting, the 7th-floor Galeries Lafayette rooftop terrace of the flagship store (which is also home to the impressive art nouveau cupola ) is free to visit and offers one of the best panoramic views of Paris.

If you’re lucky enough to visit in the Autumn, Spring or Winter, you may even be fortunate enough to see the sunset over the rooftops of Paris and beyond (in the summer months, the terrace closes too early to enjoy the golden hour).

From here, you can see many of the major sites the city has to offer. After all, the ‘Terrasse’ offers 180-degree views over towards the Tour Eiffel, Opera and over the rooftops. Unfortunately, you can’t see the Sacré-Coeur from the Haussmann location as the view is blocked by a wall. However, the view over towards the southern side of the city more than makes up for the fact…

What you may well not know is that there are countless other Galeries Lafayette locations all around France. One of the most iconic locations (aside from the Haussmann Flagship store) can be found in La Ville Rose, AKA Toulouse. Also home to a rooftop terrace, it’s one of the best secret spots of Toulouse .

Since 2020, following a massive renovation which saw infinity-pool-style windows installed onto the rooftop terrace which further enhance the view to be admired from there, the rooftop can still be visited for free but is also now home to two restaurants.

On the left-hand side when entering the rooftop space, there’s the Créatures Galeries Lafayette Haussmann restaurant. This Paris vegetarian restaurant features light mediterranean dishes with drinks to match.

The other rooftop restaurant is that of Tortuga Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann which serves up shared tapas style dishes. One of the restaurants on the Galeries Lafayette rooftop terrace featured in season 2 of Emily in Paris .

Wonderful. Paris at it's romantic best ... much appreciated in these drab lock down times.

Monday 25th of March 2019

Are there a line or anything to get up to the terrace?

Sophie Nadeau

Tuesday 26th of March 2019

I've never had to wait in a line to visit, though it certainly can get pretty busy around sunset and at the weekends! The terrace is also closed during bad weather.

Sunday 5th of November 2017

WE were there on the 29th October. The restaurant was closed down for winter. There was the ICE BAR for drinks only. It was windy.

The Best Views of The Eiffel Tower In Paris

February 3, 2021

Best Places to View the Eiffel Tower

No trip to Paris is complete without plenty of taking in the gorgeous Eiffel Tower. As the founder of En Route to Rêverie I am in Paris often and I still delight at my first glimpses of La Tour Eiffel!

And while you’re bound to see it peeking out as you explore the city, there are some views that are just better than the rest.

Best Views of The Eiffel Tower In Paris

But first a little history lesson! The Eiffel Tower is a wrought-iron lattice tower located in the 7eme arrondissement on the Champ de Mars in Paris. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. A visit to Paris now must include an Eiffel Tower viewing!

Locally nicknamed “La dame de fer” (English for “Iron Lady”), it was constructed from 1887 to 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. I love the story that it was initially criticized by some of France’s leading artists and intellectuals for its design but now we can’t imagine Paris or France without it! It is one of the most recognizable structures in the world and the most-visited paid monument in the world.

I for one still find magic whenever I see the Eiffel Tower come into view and when it sparkles at night it is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever laid eyes on.

Landen and I put our minds together and have curated a comprehensive list of what we feel to be some of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris – I hope you’ll find this helpful for your next visit!

Are you looking to know more about the French way of life and get insider tips for an upcoming trip to Paris? I would love to work with you! Book an En Route to Rêverie plan with me today.

Best Places to View the Eiffel Tower

The Trocadéro

The most famous place to view the Eiffel Tower is from The Trocadéro which is the site of the Palais de Chaillot in Paris’ 16th arrondissement. It sits just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower and offers sweeping views of the Eiffel Tower. It is gorgeous both at night (above) and at dawn (below). You can easily get here by Metro and some of the best photo spots are the stairwells just past the entrance.

Beware of your belongings at this spot as pickpockets target those distracted by photo opportunities. It’s not recommended to have anyone take your photo who offers either.

The Tour Saint-Jacques

The Tour Saint-Jacques is a lesser visited destination that offers panoramic views of Paris but be warned that you’ll need tickets for a guided visit and it’s only open from June through early November on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. And be ready for a bit of a workout as you’ll need to climb a lot of stairs to reach the views! Head here for more information on visits. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

What to do in Paris in Autumn I wit & whimsy

Pont de Bir-Hakeim

The Pont de Bir-Hakeim is a personal favorite of mine for photos. The Pont de Bir-Hakeim, formerly the Pont de Passy, is a bridge that crosses the Seine connecting the 15th and 16th arrondissements. There’s a little alcove perfect for photo opps (above) but also under the bridge is striking as well (below).

Seine River Cruises

Planning to do a bateaux mouche ride down the Seine while in Paris? I like to time mine to dusk so you can see the Eiffel Tower sparkle as you return following your 60 minute cruise down Paris’s famed Seine River.

Eiffel Tower Views in Paris from the Tuileries

No trip to Paris is complete without a stroll or hang in the Tuileries just outside the Louvre. From the gardens you’ll also be able to catch a sweet little glimpse of the Eiffel Tower in the distance.

Eiffel Tower Views in Paris from Gigi Paris

If you score the right table at Gigi Paris , you’ll be able to take in a great view of the Eiffel Tower from either inside or outside. The food here is mediocre – as it is at most of this restaurant group’s properties – but they typically come with pretty good views so it is a tradeoff.

Eiffel Tower View from Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe

I love climbing the Arc de Triomphe’s steps to see over Paris – particularly in the Fall as the colors of the trees begin to change.

Once atop the structure, you’ll also score some pretty stellar views of the Eiffel Tower as well. Win/Win.

The Best Places to See the Eiffel Tower

Rue Saint Dominque

The Rue Saint Dominque in Paris’s 7th arrondissement is a lovely stroll full of shops and some delightful restaurants but it also sits under beautiful views of the Eiffel Tower. You’ll be hard pressed to miss it but do be sure to look up as you walk the street! This particular photo was taken between Boulevard de la Tour-Maubourg and Rue Cler. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

The Best Places to View the Eiffel Tower in Paris I wit & whimsy

Avenue de Camoens

After you visit the Pont de Bir-Hakeim head over to the tucked away Avenue de Camoens in the 16th arrondissement. Now famous due to Instagram, this small residential street offers striking views of the Eiffel Tower.

Eiffel Tower Views in Paris from Galeries Lafayette Rooftop

Galeries Lafayette Rooftop

The Galeries Lafayette rooftop offers some of the best free views to overlook Paris and see the Eiffel Tower in the distance alongside the beautiful Parisian rooftops on a clear day.

The Best Places to See the Eiffel Tower

Printemps Rooftop

If you’d like even more free rooftop views, pop over to Galeries Lafayette’s grand magasin department store neighbor Printemps to see their similar rooftop views as well. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

Paris I wit & whimsy

La Terrasse at Hotel Raphael

La Terrasse at Hotel Raphael is a wow moment as soon as you step out of the elevator. It is the perfect special ocassion spot in the summer to enjoy a cocktail and take in 360 degree views of Paris. Seating is very limited so arrive early to avoid a wait. And do note that drinks here run about 30 euros a piece and you will need to purchase a drink in order to enjoy the view. But these are some of my favorite views of Paris!

Best places to see the Eiffel Tower

Champ de Mars

The most obvious place to see the Eiffel Tower is of course up close and personal on the grounds of the Champ de Mars park. It’s a wonderful place to have a picnic, sit on a park bench and enjoy the view and of course don’t miss taking in the sparkling lights at night.

And, if you go in the springtime, you may just get lucky and be able to see the Eiffel Tower surrounded by cherry blossoms!

Paris Guide I wit & whimsy

Pont Alexandre III

Pont Alexandre III is one of Paris’ grandest bridges and a personal favorite of mine. It offers some of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in the distance. The Pont Alexandre III is a deck arch bridge that spans the Seine and connects the Champs-Élysées quarter with those of the Invalides and Eiffel Tower.

Best places to see the Eiffel Tower

Pont d’Iéna Northern Entrance

As you walk from the Trocadero to the Eiffel Tower you’ll pass over the Pont d’Iéna. The view of the Eiffel Tower from the right side of the bridge is beautiful and often framed by the trees lining the Seine.

Eiffel Tower Views in Paris from Pont de l'Alma

Pont de l’Alma

Pont de l’Alma is one of the best bridges to view the Eiffel Tower – particularly at sunset. If you are looking for a drink nearby, I recommend dressing up and heading to Le Bar at the Four Seasons Hotel George V nearby.

Paris I wit & whimsy

Rue de l’Université

Rue de l’Université in the 7th arrondissement offers one of the best up close shots of the Eiffel Tower and is usually the sight of many Instagrams being taken so arrive early in the morning for the best photo opp. You’ll find this spot where Rue de l’Université ends – right at the Eastern entrance to the tower.

Avenue Rapp

Right near the Rue De l’Universite and usually a little less hectic with photographs is Avenue Rapp and Square Rapp. This street also in the 7th arrondissement will also allow for close up peeks and photo opps of the tower.

The Best Places to See the Eiffel Tower

L’Oiseau Blanc at The Peninsula Paris

The restaurant of the famous Peninsula, a luxurious hotel located near the Arc de Triomphe, L’Oiseau Blanc offers some of the best fine dining views in Paris. If you don’t want to splurge for a meal here, dress up and arrive for drinks instead. Sex & the City fans will recognize this restaurant from the final season of the show. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

Best Views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris

Le Rooftop at The Peninsula Paris

And for warmer months in Paris, don’t miss Le Rooftop of The Peninsula for pricey drinks that boast a beautiful view along with their price tag. Sitting atop the hotel, Le Rooftop offers panoramic views over Paris. While going at sunset is lovely, if you arrive after dark you’ll get to enjoy your cocktail alongside the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower. Do note there is a dress code for this location and a one drink per person minimum. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

Best Views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris

Rue de Grenelle

For a pretty street scene with the Eiffel Tower day or night – head to Rue de Grenelle. The street truns from the 6th to the 7th arrondissement but this shot is just before Boulevard des Invalides. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

Best Views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris

Place de la Concorde

The Place de la Concorde is one of the major public squares in Paris and is located in the 8th arrondissement, at the eastern end of the Champs-Élysées. It features the beautiful Luxor Obelisk, regal fountains and views of the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomph and the Tuileries. Source: Paris with Landen / Landen Kerr .

Eiffel Tower Views in Paris from Place de la Concorde

Pont de la Concorde

Montparnasse tower.

While I think of it as an eyesore, this building actually offers cool views of the city. The Montparnasse Tower Observation Deck offers you a panoramic visit of Paris, its monuments and districts from 210 meters in the air.

For even more Eiffel Tower views, be sure to head to Notre Dame once it has been restored and is back open.

Awe I loved this little escape to Paris today, Meghan! All of the spots are so beautiful!! I am definitely book marking this for the future for when I can finally take my trip to France 🙂 Happy Wednesday!

Libby http://premedwearspearls.blogspot.com/

I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Libby!!

The shots of the Eiffel Tower made my day! For a few minutes I could escape the world we have been living in for the past ten months and enjoy the change of scenery. You have provided me with a few more vantage points to view the Eiffel Tower on my next trip to Paris..

Aw I’m so glad you enjoyed the escape! I can’t wait till we can all return to Paris!

I like watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle from Pont Neuf and from Montmartre where the street that goes past Sacre Coeur and the lift to get there bends to go to the bus stop. It’s just below the little park with the drinking fountain in front. There is even a square hole made in the fence to take better pictures.

The Pont Neuf is a great spot for sure! One of my favorites. And I know where you are talking about in Montmartre but never been up there for the sparkle – one day!

5 Things to do at Galeries Lafayette in Paris (other than Shopping)

galeries lafayette tour eiffel

Did you know that the department store concept was created in Paris? It was in the mid-1800s that Paris shopping moved from covered passages to les grands magasins . These big stores set up shop on wide boulevards with plenty of lighting. It was in 1893 that two cousins from Alsace opened what is now known as Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann, which is one of the most famous department stores in the world. Like a massive jewel box, the Art Nouveau architecture and Neo-Byzantine stained glass dome are draws just as much as the merchandise inside. Said to be the second-most visited site in Paris behind the Eiffel Tower, there are many things to do at Galeries Lafayette other than shopping.

Take a Galeries Lafayette History Tour

galeries lafayette tour eiffel

Whether you’re an architecture lover, history buff, or just curious about the legend that is Galeries Lafayette, this is the one tour you won’t want to miss. From construction secrets to the hidden messages to the Louis Majorelle-designed staircase banister inspired by Palais Garnier, on this hour-long tour, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at this 125-year old family business. Tours operate ever Saturday and Sunday, costing €13.50 per adult and €9.00 per child. Go here for more information and bookings.

Have a Wine and Cheese Tasting

galeries lafayette tour eiffel

One can’t rightly visit Paris and not have at least one wine and cheese tasting. Located on the third floor of Galeries Lafayette is an all-new space known as L’Appartement . It is here that you’ll dive into the deliciously complicated world of French wine and cheese. Whether you’re a novice wanting an introduction or are well versed in the virtues of French vin and fromage , this 1.5 hour class will quench your thirst. A brief introduction of French wine is followed by a tasting of four wines—two whites and two reds. Naturally, each wine is perfectly paired with a cheese, alongside a basket of bread.

Weather a crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the Central Loire Valley, paired with a goat cheese or a bold Côtes du Rhône, paired with a Tomme de Brebis , you’re sure to discover something new. And as an added bonus, all of the wines and cheeses are available at Galeries Lafayette Gourmet. Tastings occur every Monday and Wednesday from 12:30-2:00 pm, as well as Fridays from 6:00-7:30 pm. Cost is €55 and open to those 18-years old and older. Find more information about the tastings here.

Galeries Lafayette is giving my readers a 10% discount on this tasting. Enter the code WINENOT upon checkout. The offer is limited…for how long, I don’t know. Just plug it in and see!

Take a Macaron Baking Class

galeries lafayette tour eiffel

If you have more of a sweet tooth, then the macaron baking class will be more your taste. Supposedly, the macaron was brought to France from Italy by Catherine de’Medici in the 1500s. Though, at that time it didn’t look like the pastel mini-hamburgers that we know today. That transformation is credited to Ladurée. Instead of forking over a couple of euros a pop for a ready-made macaron, you can try your hand at making them yourself. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00-4:30 pm, ganache is being whipped up in the Galeries Lafayette L’Appartement . For €49, you’ll learn the macaron-making techniques and take them home to your kitchen. Hop over here for more details on the class.

Attend a Fashion Show

Paris is arguably the fashion capital of the world, and there’s no better place to see it than under the Galeries Lafayette stained glass cupola. With so many racks to browse through, finding that ‘right’ look can feel a little overwhelming. For some style inspiration, step into one of Galeries Lafayette’s fashion shows. Located on the 4 th floor in the Opera room, male and female models strut their stuff wearing the season’s latest trends. The 30-minute shows are held every Friday at 3:00 pm. Tickets are €12 per adult and €9 for children under 12. Find out more here .

Sign up for a Beauty Masterclass

galeries lafayette tour eiffel

Of course, being beautiful on the inside is the most important, but surely feeling beautiful on the outside feels good, too. At the Galeries Lafayette beauty masterclass, you’ll kick start your beauty routine with the help of experts. There are plenty of things to do at Galeries Lafayette other than shopping, but let’s be real, that’s the big draw. Well, the shopping and the stunning stained-glass cupola. I mean, if there’s a more beautiful department store in the world then I’ve never seen it.

OK so despite the fact that I’ve been to Paris many many times, I’ve never visited Galeries Lafayette. Now I really want to go – I had no idea it was so pretty inside apart from anything else! And, I’d certainly be up for a macaron class (if you get to eat what you make!)

' src=

Leah Walker

Of course you get to eat and take what you make! The architecture of Galeries Lafayette is legendary! You must put it on your to-do list when you return to Paris.

Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t visit Galeries Lafayette when I was in Paris. What an amazing mall. I think I’d spend most of my time looking at the ceiling and beautiful architecture but who could say no to macarons.

What a shame! It’s a must-do when you come back to Paris. If it’s around Christmas then even better.

' src=

OMG I want to do all of them. The macaroon making classes must be amazing. Never knew of beauty masterclasses in Paris. And the ceiling pic is amazing!

The stained glass cupola is marvelous! It also changes colors, so you’ll have to come several times and/or stick around to see it change.

' src=

I had no idea that you could do so many things in Galleries Lafayette. I thought you could only shop there! A macaroon making class sounds pretty awesome, as does cheese and wine tasting. I would love to attend a fashion show as well, although I am not a fan of taking any beauty classes so that I’ll probably skip. Also, a Galleries history tour to learn about its secrets and hidden facts would be fun, I am sure!

Indeed, I think the history tour is my favorite. But I’m a total history geek!

Galeries Lafayette is definitely THE department store I want to visit when in Paris next – I’ve never been a big shopper, but I love the history and the beautiful interior design / architecture of the building. And it helps that there are so many cool things to do besides shopping – I would definitely be up for learning to make macarons!

Yeah, even non-shoppers will have plenty to do at Galeries Lafayette. There’s even an art gallery within the store.

' src=

Taking in the view from the roof of Galeries Lafayette is also a great idea! I love the ornate architecture there, and all your activities are excellent choices. Wine and cheese is one of the reasons I love France – the combinations can be just magical. I love the idea of doing a beauty master class too – I imagine learning the core beauty tips in such a decadent place would be fabulous!

Yes! When you find that perfect wine and cheese pairing it just is like fireworks! It never gets old.

I have probably been to the store at least 50 times over the years and I never knew that you could do a tour. I am making a note of that for the next time I am there! It is something that I will definitely do. It is even more amazing at Christmas when the decorations are completely over the top. Have you been onto the roof? It’s one of the best views of Paris.

Sure, I go to Galeries Lafayette a couple times per month. If it’s nice outside, I always go to the roof. I love being that close to the Opera. I always see something new on the rooftop.

' src=

I have been to Galeries Lafayette twice. Both times we knew what we were looking for to shop and got after that. It was so crowded. I never knew there other things beyond shopping!

Yes, it surely can get crowded, especially at Christmas. The upper floors are better when it comes to crowds. Check that out next time.

' src=

Wow, I had no idea you could do all of these things in a department store! When I went I admit I just did some shopping!! However, now I know you can have a cheese and wine tasting, and learn to cook macarons I will definitely do that next time!

The shopping is hard to resist, but there’s so much more. There’s even an art gallery in the store.

' src=

Didn’t know about all these things to do there, but you can go up to the roof as well for a nice view over Paris!

Yes! The rooftop is legendary and a place I probably visit once per month. The weather hasn’t been cooperating lately, however.

It was fascinating reading about the Galeries Lafayette. Was not aware that the departmental store concept which has now transformed into the glitzy malls of today originated in Paris. The architecture of Galeries Lafayette looks so stunning. Also, it is intriguing to know that there are so many things other than shopping to be done at Galeries Lafayette. We would love to go there just to enjoy the art and architecture.

Indeed, the concept started in Paris with Le Bon Marche being the first. Galeries Lafayette is definitely a great destination in Paris.

Thank you Leah! I’m going this coming winter for the first time to Paris and I have put this amazing place on my priority list! I’ll be 80 years old when I visit and when I was in my 20’s San Francisco’s, California had a fabulous department store called The City of Paris! It also had a wonderful dome and floors designed around a rotunda just like the Galleries. It was so elegant and I remember long slim drawers with beautiful gloves and scarves in them. At Christmas they would have an emmense Christmas tree in the center that would revolve and you could go to the different floors and gaze at all the decorations on it.. alas, it is no longer! So I shall not miss this wonderful Galleries when I visit Paris!

Hi Pauline. I’ve heard about this department store in San Francisco. It was started by a French woman, and I recently had a meeting with the great grandson of that woman (I believe that was the connection). I hope you’re coming in December to Paris, because you will LOVE Galeries Lafayette at Christmas. It will remind you of the one from your youth. 🙂

This shopping mall is worth visiting just to admire its beauty rather than anything! So beautiful. I visited a similar mall in Buenos Aires but this is definitively a place to dedicate a good couple of hours to explore and enjoy .

' src=

They don’t build malls like that anymore 😉 Looks like a painting. I’ll be sure to visit it when I go to Paris!

' src=

We were in Paris and tried to find the building in which that picture was taken, with the open balconies. We could not find it. There are several buildings in the immediate vicinity all labeled the same. Which building is it?

It’s at 40 Bd Haussmann, 75009

Galeries Lafayette flagship Boulevard Haussmann Paris

PARIS — As retail rights itself post-pandemic, Paris’ Galeries Lafayette has bounced back with sales reaching 2019 levels.

The retail group hit 3.6 billion euros in sales in 2023, chief executive officer Nicolas Houzé revealed during a presentation at the company’s flagship in Paris . The busy holiday shopping period last December even topped pre-pandemic numbers, and those sales continued to accelerate in the first quarter, he said.

The store will hold a big birthday party with a special event under the store’s famous dome, details of which are still under wraps, in September, Houzé said.

Pop-ups and special events will increasingly become a core PR pillar for the store.

“We have continued to strengthen our events policy, since we are convinced that the department store must be an events business,” Houzé said.

Olympic Expectations

The anniversary celebration will follow this summer’s Olympics, which will bring expected disruptions to the city and the stores to the tune of driving sales down 5 to 10 percent.

Still, Houzé expects that it will ultimately be good PR for the city itself.

“Our conviction is that this global event will give the city of Paris new visibility, and ultimately make new tourists and customers want to come visit Paris. Therefore we will make up these sales losses following the Olympic Games, between the month of September and the end of the year,” he said.

“It would be completely stupid to say that everything will be business as usual. Obviously there will be disruptions and we must take this into account,” added director of operations Alexandre Liot. “But we see the Olympics as an opportunity for Paris and for France for the future.”

To capitalize on the games, Galeries Lafayette will invite 20 designers to create exclusive products for the store that will roll out around the celebrations.

The Olympic shine will also continue the polishing-up project of the Champs-Élysées, which is in the midst of a multiyear revamp to improve the boulevard. The group believes that shine will also rub off on its second Paris store on the famous shopping street, which has underperformed since its opening in 2019.

It was launched with a more avant-garde, experimental point of view.

“We were frankly very innovative and pushed the concept as far as possible. The fact is that the performance didn’t live up to what we expected for many reasons,” he said, in part because the concept did not resonate with shoppers, as well as the tough retail climate.

They have revamped the concept with a more classical offering, as well as changed marketing tactics and increased communications spend. It will still serve as a space for emerging brands and new ideas, but they have added a more classical twists. Houzé noted that the personal shopper concept was a success in trials at that store, and has since been rolled out to other locations.

Foot traffic to the group stores has also bounced back, to 30 million visitors in 2023.

With More Locals, a New Luxury Brand Mix

But with the loss of Chinese tourists and the giant buses that used to deposit them in front of the Boulevard Haussmann flagship, that mix has shifted.

Before the pandemic, about 33 percent of its customers were from China, while that number now stands at 20 percent. Those are mostly individuals, and fewer large groups.

Those losses have been made up by French customers, which now make up 40 percent of the store’s customer base with a particular focus on local VIP clients.

The remaining 40 percent are international tourists, with other Asian nationalities, such as South Korea, Japan and Thailand, filling in that gap. The Haussmann flagship reopened its international tour group welcome center last year to make for a more pleasant customer and sales floor experience, he noted.

The local customer base has become increasingly loyal since 2021, Houzé added.

“Ultimately it allowed us to address a much more balanced clientele,” he said of the new demographics.

The loss of Chinese tourists and large groups also shifted the mix inside the store. They revamped the first floor, with larger spaces for key luxury brands, including Chanel and Rolex, while removing some unnamed brands that had mainly appealed to Chinese customers.

“We reinforced our offer with a strengthening of partnerships with luxury houses,” he said, to be more in line with the desires of the newer customer mix, especially Parisian VIPs.

Those expansions came to the tune of about 200 million, with half coming from the group and the other half coming from the brands themselves. The store has also added a lounge and concierge services as it banks on bigger local spend.

“And so, we must evolve, we are not going to deprive ourselves of growth drivers that are close to us,” he said.

The luxury brand offerings are about on par with what they would carry in their own flagships. To differentiate the department store, they are seeking more exclusive brands and products.

The Jacquemus and Nike collaboration was only available at the brand’s flagship and the Haussmann store worldwide.

Kim Kardashian’s Skims brand is only available at Galeries Lafayette in France. It opened a pop-up at its Nice, France, store when that brand arrived to amplify its exclusivity. Strategies like this will help it stand out in an ever-crowded market, where customers have almost every brand at their fingertips.

To that end, the group is also investing heavily in developing its own omnichannel services. Houzé said it is “the right response to the expectations” of customers today.

Changes in customer behavior shaped by the pandemic have borne out in the numbers. In 2019, about 1 percent of the company’s sales were online, while for 2023, it was about 10 percent. Many of these are shipped-from-store home delivery sales and other convenient systems the company developed during the pandemic closures.

The company is also starting to test AI systems on several fronts, including efficiency on the customer service side, creating product descriptions as well as using it on image generation.

It has also invested in developing its luxury resale channel in the Haussmann flagship through the Re-Store section, which was inaugurated in 2021. With 5,000 square feet dedicated to circular fashion, the section generated 90 million euros in sales in 2023.

“It’s a category which is truly an important expectation of the young generation,” he said.

In addition to expanding the luxury spaces, it has added new contemporary brands such as Jeanne Damas’ Rouje and Balzac, a young Parisian brand which only has one brand-owned flagship and is carried in three Galeries Lafayette stores nationwide.

The shoe department has also been revamped. The category has seen a growth level upward of 30 percent and continues to accelerate with the move to a new floor and upscaled section.

With its massage, personal care and gym, the wellness space opened in 2022 , appeals particularly to tourists who are staying in Airbnbs that do not have access to hotel services, Houzé noted. Most of that is services, only about 20 percent of that space is devoted to products.

For its next act, the store will expand the spaces dedicated to the growing category of menswear starting in 2025.

Houzé emphasized that all of these investments are self-financed from the group’s profitability, and not from private investments or the selling off of the BHV department store.

That decision was made post-pandemic as the group wanted to refocus its portfolio on its core brand.

“We have decided to concentrate our efforts on the Galeries Lafayette brand and the 19 department stores that we consider a priority,” he said, of the 18 regional stores plus the Boulevard Haussmann flagship. “We sold BHV to focus our financial and personnel efforts on the historic name.”

That name is also expanding into new markets, with previously announced franchise partnerships in China and India.

“The objective is to make 15 percent of our turnover internationally by 2028,” Houzé said. It stands about 10 percent now, with outposts in Doha, Dubai and Qatar.

The group will continue to upgrade its 18 regional stores, including new approaches such as a shopping and entertainment complex in Annecy, where it includes other brands such as Uniqlo and a climbing wall.

As for the French franchises, which were thrown into chaos by the bankruptcy of owner Foncière Immobilier Bordeaux last year, a commercial court approved a safeguard plan earlier this year to keep the company afloat.

The relationship has stabilized since the decision, Houzé said.

“We have entered into a completely normalized relationship between us as franchisors and them as franchisees,” he said.
