Mark Zuckerberg owns a vast property portfolio from Palo Alto to Hawaii.

Remote work? No problem for Mark Zuckerberg.

The 37-year-old Facebook founder plans to work remotely for up to half of 2022, the Wall Street Journal reported last week — and his $320 million real estate portfolio is more than able to accommodate his work-from-home lifestyle.

The centibillionaire owns about 1,400 acres and 10 houses in Palo Alto, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and Hawaii. He has a history of not getting along with his neighbors, from construction noise complaints in San Francisco to a petition against “colonization” due to his growing Hawaii real estate portfolio .

The homes are hardly a dent in his estimated $120 billion net worth, which places him as the fifth richest person in the world, according to Forbes .

He has two children with his wife Priscilla Chan, 5-year-old Maxima and 3-year-old August . They said having children inspired them to pledge to give 99% of their Facebook shares away , though many have criticized billionaires for exacerbating inequality .

A family spokesperson confirmed the residences to The Post, and pointed out “ Mark and Priscilla’s work with the community in Kauai .”

A noisy townhouse overhaul

Dolores heights, san francisco | $11.83 million.

Photos of Zuckerberg's San Francisco house are scarce, but this 1976 photo shows what it looked like before Zuckerberg's renovations.

Zuckerberg spent $10 million on this now-7,368-square-foot house in November 2012, plus an additional $1.8 million in renovations, according to San Francisco property and permit records .

Photos of the stucco and brick home with a slate roof are scarce, but property records paint a portrait of the home: on the first floor, an office, media room, half-bathroom, a laundry room and mudroom, a wine room and a wet bar.

It is unknown how many bedrooms and bathrooms the house has, but it has 23 total rooms on four floors on a 0.22-acre lot, according to San Francisco property records.

The $1.8 million renovation of the 1928 property included remodeling the kitchen and bathrooms, replacing and repairing the stucco and brick exterior, making it fire and earthquake safe, installing air conditioning, moving and renovating windows and replacing the slate roof, according to permit records.

He added to the first, second and third floors, and added the fourth floor as a habitable level with a bathroom and a glass roof deck, according to property records.

The renovations solicited six complaints from neighbors, including noise, dust, parking, littering, construction debris and alleged permit violation complaints, which were dismissed or mediated by inspectors and city staff, according to records .

Half a block of suburban Silicon Valley

Palo alto, california | $50 million.

The primary home is a 5,617-square-foot five-bedroom, five-bathroom wood-floored home on 0.41 acres.

Zuckerberg owns at least 1.83 acres, or about half a block, in Palo Alto, California.

He paid $50.8 million for the lots lined with redwood, magnolia and Ginko trees on large front yards. Combined, the homes span almost 20,000 square feet with 15 bedrooms and more than 16 bathrooms, according to property records.

The primary home is a 5,617-square-foot five-bedroom, five-bathroom wood-floored home on 0.41 acres, which he purchased for $7 million in 2011, a year before he married Chan, according to Architectural Digest .

The colonial revival, clapboard-sided house is the oldest home in Palo Alto, with parts of the wood frame structure dating to the 1860s, according to a City of Palo Alto Historic Resources Board report.

Today, the mansion has a saltwater pool, a sunroom, an entertainment pavilion, a fireplace, a barbecue area, a spa, front and back porches and some unusual amenities — like a “Facebook Canon” which launches gray T-shirts and an A.I. assistant with the voice of Morgan Freeman, according to Architectural Digest, which Zuckerberg built himself, according to FastCompany .

He used the other four homes as guest houses and recreational facilities, according to an Architectural Review Board meeting .

In 2016, Zuckerberg proposed to demolish the four residences and replace them with 20% smaller houses to expand outdoor space for their primary property.

In 2016, he proposed to demolish the four residences and replace them with 20% smaller houses to expand outdoor space for their primary property. But the Palo Alto Architectural Review Board denied his request in part because the houses were not “credible” single-family homes.

“What I’m finding here when I look through these plans is that none of these are really residential in my book. A residence is something where a family lives. A person resides in that residence. And these are not residences. These are part of a larger compound,” said Architectural Review Board member Peter Baltay at the meeting.

News of neighbors’ complaints in San Francisco also made his new neighbors wary, emails show , though builders said they minimized neighborhood impact in their plans, they outlined in the review board meeting.

Thousands of Hawaii acres

Kauai, hawaii | over $200 million.

Zuckerberg seems to love Hawaii. In fact, he can’t stop buying up land — 1,400 acres of it.

Zuckerberg seems to love Hawaii. In fact, he can’t stop buying up land — 1,400 acres of it.

In 2014, he spent $116 million on 707 acres including most of Pila’a beach and Kahu’aina Plantation, which, according to local newspaper the Garden Island,” includes a 6,100-square-foot house with a 16-car garage and offices and security headquarters, part of Zuckerberg’s $23 million security team .

Zuckerberg first underwent local scrutiny for putting up walls and blocking beach access after this purchase, the Garden Island reported .

In 2017, Zuckerberg underwent national scrutiny when he filed quiet-title lawsuits to buy pockets of land within his estate. Called kuleana parcels, these landlocked patches of land were granted to native Hawaiian tenant farmers in 1850 and handed down through generations, local reports explained .

Zuckerberg withdrew the lawsuits after public backlash, but he still spent $45.3 million on 89 acres spanning at least 12 kuleana parcels, according to local reports , including 79.8 acres from Gary Stewart for $33.3 million, according to Pacific Business News .

In March, the couple spent $53 million to add 600 more acres to their portfolio. Zuckerberg has recently been spotted hitting the waves, hurling spears and donning copious amounts of sunscreen on the islands , in addition to their contributions to the Chan Zuckerberg Kaua‘i Community Fund of Hawai‘i Community Foundation .

Dual desert vacation homes

Lake tahoe, california | $59 million.

The Brushwood estate has a 5,322-square-foot, six-bed, five-bath home on six acres of land.

In 2018, Zuckerberg spent $59 million on two Lake Tahoe homes — the Brushwood and Carousel estates. Together, the estates span almost 10 acres.

The Brushwood estate has a 5,322-square-foot, six-bedroom, five-bathroom home on 6 acres of land. It has approximately 400 feet of lakefront, a private pier, patios, a guest house and a garage, according to permit records . The main house has peaked roofs with light-wood beamed ceilings, photos show.

In a former life, the home hosted the Oscar de la Renta fashion show and the Lake Tahoe summer music festival, according to Realtor.com .

The Carousel estate has 200 feet of lakefront, a marina-style pier, a breezeway and a two-car garage, plus a guesthouse and a caretaker’s apartment.

The Carousel estate has an eight-bedroom, nine-bathroom home on 3.5 acres. It has 200 feet of lakefront, a marina-style pier, a breezeway and a two-car garage, plus a guesthouse and a caretaker’s apartment, according to Realtor.com and permit records.

It originally had three separate cabins in the ’30s that were connected and expanded in the ’50s. The caretaker’s house was built in 1967, and the house had further modifications in the ’70s and in 1998, according to historical status inspection , which determined the property not historic.

Lake Tahoe, which straddles the California and Nevada border, has been a celebrity favorite for decades, with residents and vacationers including Frank Sinatra , Kim Kardashian and Gene Simmons .

Zuckerberg was born and raised in Dobbs Ferry, NY by a dentist and a psychiatrist. He has three sisters, according to New York Magazine .

After leaving his Harvard dorm room to start Facebook, the man who inspired the 2010 film “The Social Network” rented a few places in Silicon Valley — and even tried to pay in Facebook stock, a former landlord (who opted to accept cash from the young entrepreneur) told The Post .

Zuckerberg's old landlord gave the New York Post an exclusive interview about what it was like to rent to the young Zuckerberg.

Insider Today

Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg recently invited CBS This Morning cohost Gayle King into his Palo Alto house for a rare look at his personal life with wife Priscilla Chan, reported Business Insider's Ben Gilbert .

But that's not the Facebook CEO's only home. He dropped more than $59 million on two adjacent Lake Tahoe properties last winter, Katherine Clarke of The Wall Street Journal reported . The purchase happened privately through a limited-liability company and a high-end wealth manager, according to Clarke.

It's just the latest addition to Zuckerberg 's collection of properties in the western US — in addition to Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto he owns properties in San Francisco and the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Collectively, Zuckerberg has purchased 10 properties, though he has a knack for also buying surrounding properties to ensure his privacy — he bought four homes surrounding his main Palo Alto residence and a stake in a beach adjacent to a plantation he purchased in Kauai.

Zuckerberg's also known for getting embroiled in a bit of real-estate conflict — there was a dispute over the landlocked parcels on the plantation, and neighbors reportedly weren't pleased with the effects of Zuckerberg's year-plus renovation on his San Francisco townhouse.

Take a look at Zuckerberg's real-estate portfolio.

Mark Zuckerberg lives in a 5,000-square-foot estate in Palo Alto, California.

He purchased the Crescent Park neighborhood home in May 2011 for $7 million, Business Insider's Tanza Loudenback reported . He's since tricked it out with a "custom-made artificially intelligent assistant," according to CNBC .

Compared with Zuckerberg's $71.5 billion net worth, the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home is quite modest.

Architectural Digest described it as a "'no frills' abode" that chooses function over extravagance. Outside, it features a big backyard, a pool, and lush, detailed landscaping. Inside, there is a spacious kitchen and plenty of windows allowing for sunlight.

The following year, Zuckerberg began buying four homes surrounding his Palo Alto residence.

mark zuckerberg house tour

He spent more than $43 million on these properties, Katherine Clarke of the Wall Street Journal reported , citing public records. After leasing the homes back to their former owners, he planned to demolish and rebuild them in 2016.

According to Claudine Zap of Realtor , city officials didn't approve this plan, and Zuckerberg filed a new plan that allowed him to renovate two of the homes and rebuild the other two as single-story homes , creating a sort of compound.

Zuckerberg also owns a 5,500-square-foot townhouse in San Francisco.

mark zuckerberg house tour

He reportedly bought the home for $10 million in 2013, according to SF Gate . The house, which dates back to 1928, is on a 9,800-square-foot lot and features 70 square feet of sidewalk frontage, according to Clarke.

According to Google Maps, it's between the Noe Valley and Mission District neighborhoods in Dolores Heights on 21st Street.

The Compass real-estate agent Natalie Hatvany Kitchen told Clarke it's " a slightly grittier area and certainly not where you'd expect to find someone of his wealth and stature."

The townhouse became a fixer-upper, with Zuckerberg spending more than $1.6 million in renovations.

Zuckerberg spent an estimated $65,000 remodeling the kitchen and a bathroom, according to SF Gate . He also added a new media room, a wine room, and a greenhouse — the latter reportedly cost $60,000.

The renovation took 17 months, according to Lamar Anderson of Curbed , and left neighbors with torn-up sidewalks and no street parking. Neighbors sent around a letter complaining about his illegally parked SUVs, Clarke reported .

In 2014, Zuckerberg's real-estate portfolio expanded to the Pacific with a $100 million splurge on two properties on Kauai Island in Hawaii.

mark zuckerberg house tour

These properties span 750 acres across an isolated stretch of Hawaiian beach, according to Business Insider's Madeline Stone . Zuckerberg said he and wife, Priscilla Chan, bought the land because they're "dedicated to preserving its natural beauty."

In 2017, he purchased another 89 acres for more than $45 million, Clarke reported .

He first paid $49.8 million for an 89.2% stake of Pila'a Beach, an isolated oceanfront property.

mark zuckerberg house tour

The property is 393 acres and not publicly listed, according to Stone .

The beach is difficult to access, with a half-mile trail that leads down to the shore.

mark zuckerberg house tour

The beach is open to the public, and Zuckerberg's land is situated a bit farther back from the shoreline, Stone wrote.

Zuckerberg reportedly paid $66 million for the Kahu'aina Plantation, which is adjacent to the beach.

The 357-acre former sugarcane plantation includes 2,500 feet of white-sand beach and has a working organic farm ripe with crops, including ginger, turmeric, and papaya. The farm is also home to goats and turtles, according to Zuckerberg's Facebook page .

The plantation was approved for up to 80 homes, but Zuckerberg reportedly plans to build just one.

mark zuckerberg house tour

He plans to build a 6,100-square-foot two-bedroom house, including a 16-bay garage complex and a "ranch administration building" featuring key-card-protected offices and security headquarters, according to Zap .

Zuckerberg bought as many as two dozen landlocked parcels on the plantation.

mark zuckerberg house tour

The rights to those parcels are known as "kuleanas." There was a dispute over four of these parcels, which were granted to native Hawaiian families, and Zuckerberg later dropped it, according to Clarke .

Last winter, Zuckerberg dropped $59 million on two adjacent private waterfront estates on Lake Tahoe, a popular destination for Bay Area residents.

mark zuckerberg house tour

Zuckerberg's estates are on the west shore outside Tahoe City, an area known for "old, understated money —less flash, more hunker in the woods," Clarke reported , adding that t he families of the late Hewlett-Packard founder Bill Hewlett and the late publishing icon Charles McClatchy are neighbors.

The transaction was carried out secretly and wasn't revealed publicly until the following May.

mark zuckerberg house tour

According to Clarke , Zuckerberg purchased the properties through a limited-liability company and a high-end wealth manager to keep the deals private. Real-estate agents signed nondisclosure agreements and removed photos of the properties from their websites.

His 5,322-square-foot Brushwood Estate sits on a 6-acre lot and dates back to the 1920s.

mark zuckerberg house tour

At 5,322 square feet, the Brushwood Estate features six bedrooms, five baths, and two half baths, according to Amy Graff of SF Gate . Inside are high-beamed ceilings and picture windows; outside are lush trees, a private dock, and a hot tub. There's also a 2,293-square-foot guesthouse.

The estate has had several owners throughout the years, including a novelist, several socialites, and a philanthropist who used to host Oscar de la Renta shows on the property.

The other property Zuckerberg bought is the $22 million Carousel Estate.

mark zuckerberg house tour

Situated on 3.5 acres , it features eight bedrooms, 9 1/2 bathrooms, high ceilings, and a wood-burning fireplace. Promotional materials for the property say it "exudes 'Old Tahoe' ambiance," according to Business Insider's Nick Bastone .

The Carousel Estate is separated into three living quarters, but it is connected by "breezeways" and is all under one roof.

mark zuckerberg house tour

Outside, it boasts 200 feet of private waterfront, with a "marina style" pier that can accommodate yachts over 50 feet long and an outdoor patio to overlook the lake, Bastone wrote . There's also a caretaker's home on the property.

Between the two properties, Zuckerberg owns 600 feet of Lake Tahoe private waterfront.

mark zuckerberg house tour

But that could soon expand — he's reportedly in talks to acquire a third property across the street. It is not clear whether Zuckerberg will keep the housing on the two properties or will opt to tear it down and start fresh, Business Insider's Megan Hernbroth reported .

10 photos of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's California Home

When you think of Mark Zuckerberg (and his wealth and global status), how do you imagine his home to be? An OTT space, robots for house help, possibly a helipad at home? Well...that visual isn't entirely true. While his house is quite the tech haven, the design of spaces and the interior aesthetic is relaxed, calm and muted. Let's explore his and Priscilla Chan's Palo Alto house, one picture at a time.

While the Home is Massive, Its Interiors Aren't Ostentatious

Unlike the homes of most billionaires, the Palo Alto-based home of Mark Zuckerberg, is understated. He purchased this 5,617-square-foot home in May 2011, a year before he married Priscilla Chan. The Crescent Park house comes with a saltwater pool, glassed-in sun room, five bedrooms, and five bathrooms.

It's Close to Work

The home is situated near Facebook's offices in Menlo Park—just a 10-minute drive. Built in 1903, the Silicon Valley home is a ‘no frills' abode. Mark Zuckerberg's home has a large outdoor space—great for parties. There is an entertainment pavilion, fireplace, barbeque area and a spa. The bathroom comes with heated floors and a deep soaking tub made out of marble. The interiors comprise wood flooring and traditional furniture.

The Exteriors Are Barbecue and Picnic-Ready Spots

The outdoor spaces are marvels in themselves, uplifting the widely known sunny Californian lifestyle of the west coast. Equipped with a soothing garden saltwater pool, the backyard also projects a tasteful, natural rusticity with its waterfall crested pond. This home is the perfect spot for hosting mega Silicon Valley parties and its outdoor pavilion has been privy to some of California's coolest barbecue socials. Both the front and back porches of the house showcase comfortable wicker patio furniture sets, further highlighting the inherently homely feel of the house.

Amenities Like No Other

One of the most luxurious spots in the house is the master bathroom that comes equipped with heated floors and an opulent marble, deep soaking tub. Rendered with a subtle palette of beige and cream, the mellow lighting together with the glossy materials of the bathroom set the scene for an indulgent spa day.

The house consists of also a world-class feature: The Facebook Canon. Located right next to the master bedroom closet, this machine-of-sorts deploys Zuckerberg's uniform grey, office t-shirt upon his command. This fascinating and playful feature render's the mansion with a spectacular individualism.

And Yes, the Home Does Have a Friendly Bot

Being a tech and software genius, the Zuckerberg mansion is inevitably equipped with a personal AI assistant called ‘Jarvis.' Set up with the voice of Morgan Freeman, Jarvis recognises guests at the front door with its powerful imaging and voice sensing abilities. Extremely tactile and responsive, this digital spectacle also wakes up the CEO's daughter Maxima every morning, with a Mandarin lesson.

Inside Mark Zuckerberg’s Top-Secret Hawaii Compound

Private property sign and palm trees behind a stone wall

Off the two-lane highway that winds along the northeast side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, on a quiet stretch of ranchland between the tourist hubs of Kapaa and Hanalei, an enormous, secret construction project is underway.

A 6-foot wall blocks the view from a nearby road fronting the project, where cars slow to try to catch a glimpse of what’s behind it. Security guards stand watch at an entrance gate and patrol the surrounding beaches on ATVs. Pickup trucks roll in and out, hauling building materials and transporting hundreds of workers.

Nobody working on this project is allowed to talk about what they’re building. Almost anyone who passes compound security—from carpenters to electricians to painters to security guards—is bound by a strict nondisclosure agreement , according to several workers involved in the project. And, they say, these agreements aren’t a formality. Multiple workers claim they saw or heard about colleagues removed from the project for posting about it on social media. Different construction crews within the site are assigned to separate projects and workers are forbidden from speaking with other crews about their work, sources say.

“It’s fight club. We don’t talk about fight club,” says David, one former contract employee. WIRED has agreed to withhold his real name because he was not authorized to speak to the press. “Anything posted from here, they get wind of it right away.”

Another former site worker, who we will call John, says he was told that another member of his construction company was fired for allegedly sharing a picture of the project on Snapchat. He’s heard similar stories from other crews. John says the “very strict” enforcement of NDAs has made workers on-site unwilling to “take the chance to get caught even taking a picture.”

The project is so huge that a not-insignificant share of the island is bound by the NDA. But everyone here knows who is behind it. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta , who bought the land in a series of deals beginning in August 2014 .

Interviews with several people associated with the project, along with public records and court documents seen by WIRED, suggest that since then, the planning and construction of the roughly 1,400-acre compound has been shrouded in secrecy. The property, known as Koolau Ranch, will, according to planning documents, include a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter, have its own energy and food supplies, and, when coupled with land purchase prices, will cost in excess of $270 million. According to evidence reviewed by WIRED, the project has relied on legal maneuvering and political networking, and at times, sources believe, it has shown disregard for the local public. All the while, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan continue to build one of the most expensive properties in the world.

The oldest and smallest of the four main Hawaiian Islands, Kauai is a tight-knit community of about 73,000 people. Its residents are the descendants of Native Hawaiians, along with Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and Puerto Rican migrants who came to work the sugarcane plantations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the more recent arrivals come from the US mainland and other Pacific islands. When plantation owners moved their operations overseas in search of cheaper labor, the island’s sugarcane economy was replaced by tourism. Workers on the Zuckerberg site are part of a growing construction industry focused on luxury home builds for mainlanders looking to move to paradise.

Though tourist-centric development has transformed much of the island in recent decades, Kauai maintains a small-town feel. Older residents still remember a time when there was only one traffic light —the second was installed in 1973. Wild chickens and feral cats are everywhere. Locals surf and fish off the beaches, or hunt pigs in the mountains. People know their neighbors.

With NDAs forbidding workers from discussing the project, the secluded North Shore compound has gained a mythic status on Kauai. One local architect unaffiliated with the Zuckerberg project jokes that it reminds him of medieval rulers who, according to legend, killed the architects of their most ambitious projects so the secrets of their designs would die with them.

Tall tales about the compound and its owner run rampant on the local rumor mill—known colloquially as the “coconut wireless.” One person heard that Zuckerberg was building a vast underground city. Many people speculate that the site will become some sort of postapocalyptic bunker in case of civilization collapse. What’s being built doesn’t live up to the coconut wireless chatter, but it’s close. Detailed planning documents obtained by WIRED through a series of public record requests show the makings of an opulent techno-Xanadu, complete with underground shelter and what appears to be a blast-resistant door.

According to plans viewed by WIRED and a source familiar with the development, the partially completed compound consists of more than a dozen buildings with at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms in total. It is centered around two mansions with a total floor area comparable to a professional football field (57,000 square feet), which contain multiple elevators, offices, conference rooms, and an industrial-sized kitchen.

In a nearby wooded area, a web of 11 disk-shaped treehouses are planned, which will be connected by intricate rope bridges, allowing visitors to cross from one building to the next while staying among the treetops. A building on the other side of the main mansions will include a full-size gym, pools, sauna, hot tub, cold plunge, and tennis court. The property is dotted with other guest houses and operations buildings. The scale of the project suggests that it will be more than a personal vacation home — Zuckerberg has already hosted two corporate events at the compound.

The plans show that the two central mansions will be joined by a tunnel that branches off into a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter, featuring living space, a mechanical room, and an escape hatch that can be accessed via a ladder. “There’s cameras everywhere,” David says—and the documents back this up. More than 20 cameras are included on plans for one smaller ranch operations building alone. Many of the compound’s doors are planned to be keypad-operated or soundproofed. Others, like those in the library, are described as “blind doors,” made to imitate the design of the surrounding walls. The door in the underground shelter will be constructed out of metal and filled in with concrete—a style common in bunkers and bomb shelters.

According to sources and planning documents reviewed by WIRED, the compound will be self-sufficient, with its own water tank, 55 feet in diameter and 18 feet tall—along with a pump system. A variety of food is already produced across its 1,400 acres through ranching and agriculture. Brandi Hoffine Barr, spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, declined to comment on the size or bunker-like qualities of the project.

The cost rivals that of the largest private, personal construction projects in human history. Building permits put the price tag for the main construction at around $100 million, in addition to $170 million in land purchases, but this is likely an underestimate. Building costs on the remote island are still higher than pre-pandemic levels.

That price for a private residence is unparalleled in the local construction industry—as is the level of secrecy and security. “The only other time you see that is when you’re doing secure military installations,” says one local construction industry official affiliated with the site. “For a private project to have an NDA attached to it is very rare.”

Grey wooden shack with windows on a hill with trees and rocks

With such scale and complexity come workplace accidents. In February, for instance, a crane traveling down a steep, narrow road on the property fell off an edge— careening down a hill with the operator inside. The driver, a 53-year-old Kauai local, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. He has since returned to the site, Hoffine Barr tells WIRED.

In August 2019, 70-year-old security guard Rodney Medeiros, who was under an NDA that, from what his family understood, prevented him from discussing specific details about his job, ended a 12-hour shift standing watch at a beach by the property. He was a contracted worker and was only hired when Zuckerberg was visiting—which he was that weekend, according to court documents reviewed by WIRED. These documents, later filed on behalf of Medeiros’ children, claim that rainy conditions made it impossible for an ATV to pick him up, as was standard practice. Medeiros began making his way up a steep trail to reach the compound’s exit, and midway up the path he suffered a heart attack. He was transported to a hospital, where he died hours later.

The secrecy of the compound was evident in the wake of Medeiros’ death. A recorded conversation between three of his children and a compound security manager, Hank Barriga, a week after his death, hints at what their legal team has implied in their wrongful death suit against one of Zuckerberg’s LLCs. The filing alleges that there is an effort behind the scenes of the Zuckerberg project to control the flow of information. In the recording, Medeiros’ children express frustration that in the days after their father’s heart attack they weren’t provided any details about what happened. Barriga says that he wanted to talk with the family but was blocked from doing so. “I was told to just wait, you know, all the supervisors want to talk to each other,” he says. Another contracted worker, a longtime roommate and close friend of Medeiros, said in a court deposition that he had also felt reluctant to discuss the incident because of his NDA. Hoffine Barr declined to comment on the recording due to the ongoing litigation.

According to Allan Parachini, a local journalist, the focus on managing the flow of information around the compound has included reprimanding the local press for critical coverage. Throughout 2017, Parachini had been requesting permits in an effort to learn what Zuckerberg was building on Kauai. He’d also recently written an opinion piece in the local newspaper, The Garden Island , that was critical of Zuckerberg, ending with a call for residents to “tell Zuckerberg that abusing his stewardship of public beaches as if we are just another batch of Facebook victims is unacceptable.”

After the article was published, Parachini claims, a local Zuckerberg representative informed him that their team would not communicate with him for any future pieces. This ban extended beyond the professional world. Parachini also volunteered with a marine mammal rescue program, which on one occasion in 2017 needed to cross Zuckerberg’s land to quickly reach a distressed seal on the beach next to the property. After crossing the compound, he claims he was informed that he, specifically, would no longer be allowed on the property under any circumstances, at the request of the owner. “I was amused,” Parachini says. “I thought it was a silly, petty, juvenile thing to do. I just laughed it off.” Hoffine Barr declined to comment on Parachini’s account of these events.

Hoffine Barr did not comment on any of the workers’ assertions about the use or strict enforcement of NDAs on the Kauai compound. She added that Zuckerberg, Chan, and their children view Koolau Ranch as their home.

In 2004, when Facebook was The Facebook, Zuckerberg requested that two student journalists sign an NDA prior to an interview . The request was denied. In 2010, when a Facebook employee leaked product plans to the media, Zuckerberg described the leak as “an act of betrayal” in a staff email and demanded the leaker’s immediate resignation. “Let’s commit to maintaining complete confidentiality about the company — no exceptions,” he wrote. ”If you can’t handle that, then just leave. We have too much social good to build to have to deal with this.” More recently, Facebook’s contracted content monitors have been required to sign strict NDAs , in part to protect the user data they monitor, but which also prevent them from speaking out about allegedly poor working conditions. The treatment of these content monitors has sparked multiple lawsuits, including a 2018 suit against Facebook that was settled for $52 million .

Professor and privacy expert Danielle Citron describes visiting a Zuckerberg home in Silicon Valley in April 2018 and not seeing a way to reach the front door, before a thick hedge swung open revealing a secret entrance. Citron pointed to an irony in the “privacy for me but not for thee” attitude of social media moguls. “I would not be surprised if NDAs were the bubble wrap on every interaction for the privacy-conscious tech billionaires whose business is the sale of our personal data,” Citron says.

A stone wall with a vast green space several grey buildings and the ocean in the distance

Hope Kallai lives on a 5-acre plot of land next to the Zuckerberg compound on Kauai. In 2016, two years after Zuckerberg purchased his first piece of land on the island, Kallai watched as a 6-foot wall was erected around portions of the property, ensuring privacy within the ranch, but denying her and other neighbors an ocean view as they walked or biked alongside the land. Recently, as construction has begun in earnest, the neighborhood has been transformed by cars and trucks circulating in and out. Loud noises, which Kallai says sound like gunshots, frequently ring out from the construction site.

The project brings a different character to the area, according to Jeff Lindner, another neighbor. “There used to not be any cars,” he says. Now, there is a lot of traffic. “They’re not there to enjoy the island,” he says of the influx of workers, many of whom he believes aren’t local to Kauai. “They’re there to get somewhere, and you’re in their way.”

Zuckerberg didn’t engage much with his new neighbors, Kallai and Lindner say. And the project hasn’t gone through any public review process, as is sometimes required for construction projects on this scale. On Kauai, a public review process can be triggered if a large private construction project occurs within a conservation zone known as a Special Management Area, and the structures on the Zuckerberg site fall outside of that zone, according to the county planning director. Still, Kallai says a community meeting on the project “would be really welcome.”

Hoffine Barr declined to comment on these neighbors’ specific criticisms of the project’s impact on the area and lack of public engagement throughout the process, but she did point to the fact that previous owners planned to build 80 luxury homes on the land.

“Mark and Priscilla value the time their family spends at Koolau Ranch and in the local community and are committed to preserving the ranch’s natural beauty,” says Hoffine Barr. “Under their care, less than one percent of the overall land is developed with the vast majority dedicated to farming, ranching, conservation, open spaces, and wildlife preservation.” Hoffine Barr adds that Zuckerberg and Chan are also working with wildlife conservation experts on the island to protect endangered or threatened wildlife populations.

After the wall came the lawsuits. Zuckerberg, through one of the 10 or so shell LLCs—a corporate structure that protects its owners from liability—that own the Kauai property on his behalf, filed litigation in December 2016 to essentially pressure some of the local landowners who held kuleana rights to around a dozen small plots of land within his ranch into selling. Hawaiian law allows the transfer of land to ancestral descendants without formal deeds, meaning that hundreds of descendants of the original landowners held small shares in parcels of the land within the Zuckerberg compound, and could legally enter the property to access them. The lawsuits gave those descendants the choice to either sell their stake in the land or bid for it at auction.

When the suits became public in January 2017, they triggered an intense backlash, and Zuckerberg backed off. In an op-ed in The Garden Island , he announced that he would abandon his involvement in the lawsuits and “work together with the community on a new approach.” But the legal process continued in part under Carlos Andrade, the kuleana descendant with the largest share of the properties, who had been tending the land for many years and who Zuckerberg voiced support for in his op-ed. Although Zuckerberg’s company, Northshore Kalo LLC, removed its name from the lawsuit, and was instead listed as a defendant, it continued buying up descendants’ shares. According to real estate records reviewed by The Guardian , Northshore Kalo LLC paid out more than $450,000 in 71 transactions between 2016 and 2018, increasing its stake in the parcels from 24.1 percent to 43.9 percent.

In June 2019, the four remaining parcels were put up for auction, pitting Andrade against a coalition of other descendants who had elected not to sell their shares. Andrade, a retired Hawaiian Studies professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, was the winning bidder in a competitive auction, paying a total of $2.14 million for the contested land. Some outbid relatives believed that Zuckerberg had backed Andrade financially.

“We think after being outbid by a retired college professor spending $2,145,000, it is now clear that something very wrong is going on,” Wayne Rapozo, a descendant who represented a coalition of other relatives at auction, said at the time . Hoffine Barr did not respond to questions about whether Zuckerberg had financially backed Andrade. She emphasized that Zuckerberg had supported Andrade’s claim because of his connection to the land, where he had lived, raised a family, and paid property taxes. Andrade passed away in 2022, and the kuleana lands are now held in a trust by his family, who regularly visit the property, Hoffine Barr said.

Stone wall with grass trees and shrubs behind it

Many locals believe Zuckerberg’s legal maneuverings are another example of outsiders moving to Hawaii and taking advantage of people already living there. Zuckerberg faced a barrage of negative press around the time of the auctions, and a June 2020 petition citing the kuleana lawsuits and calling to “stop Mark Zuckerberg from colonizing Kauai,” received more than a million signatures.

In recent years, Zuckerberg and Chan appear to have launched a concerted effort to ease their transition into the Kauai community. Their local charity, the Chan Zuckerberg Kauai Community Fund, has given more than $20 million to various Kauai nonprofits since 2018.

With Zuckerberg’s status as a major philanthropist come political connections. Zuckerberg and Chan have established a relationship with Kauai mayor Derek Kawakami, holding meetings to discuss funding local initiatives during a 2018 flooding crisis and at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. In March 2021, the couple helped relaunch a county jobs program with a $4.2 million donation and gave $3.5 million to local Covid-19 assistance projects.

The compound also hired Arryl Kaneshiro, then sitting chair of the Kauai County Council, as an agricultural consultant. The son of another former county council member, Kaneshiro is a rancher and a popular politician who was reelected to four consecutive terms from 2014 to 2022. Neither Kaneshiro nor Hoffine Barr responded to questions regarding his pay, though ethics disclosures show that he took home more than $100,000 from his consulting practice in 2021, during his final term on the council. Local ethics rules do not require that politicians specify how much income they make over $100,000.

This sort of hiring is legal, so long as it is disclosed if matters specific to the Zuckerberg property come before the council. No such matters arose during Kaneshiro’s tenure.

In November 2021, Zuckerberg gave a $4 million gift to fund the purchase of a traditional Hawaiian fishpond managed by Malama Huleia, a local nonprofit that focuses on wetland restoration through Native Hawaiian cultural practices. That nonprofit also had ties to local government—the then vice chair of the county council Mason Chock had recently served as its president. Speaking to WIRED, Billy DeCosta, a member of the Kauai County Council, pointed to the fishpond donation and the hiring of Kaneshiro and questioned whether Zuckerberg had a “strategic plan to get all the big dogs on his side.”

Asked about Zuckerberg’s local political involvement, Hoffine Barr said that government leaders’ roles often overlap on the small island. Zuckerberg and his team have often tried to engage with the community, said Hoffine Barr.

“It’s good to have friends at any level of government,” says Scott Amey, general counsel for the watchdog group Project on Government Oversight on the hiring of Kaneshiro. “Sometimes they can help with different issues or obtain information.”

On the other hand, an adversarial local government can throw a wrench into building plans — even those of billionaires. In New Zealand, for instance, PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel’s plans for a bunker-like lodge on the country’s South Island were shut down in 2022 when the local council decided the project would have a negative impact on the surrounding landscape.

With the string of donations, Zuckerberg and Chan are now among the most important philanthropists on Kauai.

The island’s nonprofits have taken notice, and many now look to their north shore neighbors as potential moonshot donors . Local Facebook pages regularly feature appeals to Zuckerberg to fix one problem or another. In an August 2022 Facebook post lamenting the lack of movie theaters on the island (there is only one), one commenter suggested that Zuckerberg could fund a new drive-in.

With his donations, jobs, and the hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual property tax Zuckerberg pays—though the land is subject to a substantial agricultural tax discount— many view his presence as a net positive for the island. DeCosta, for instance, credits Zuckerberg for the construction jobs the compound creates and his charitable donations. “What’s better,” he asks, “one Zuckerberg who owns 1,000 acres, or 100 millionaires who each own 100 acres?”

Almost a decade after his first land purchase here, it’s unclear whether the local community on Kauai will ever fully accept their billionaire neighbor. “Zuckerberg’s presence may increase charity, but will not address the root causes of why we need this type of philanthropic charity in the first place,” says Nikki Cristobal, executive director of local Hawaiian education and arts nonprofit Kamawaelualani.

Many locals view the billionaire as a part of a larger machine, the same one that has been buying up Hawaiian land since the “Great Mahele” authorized private land ownership in 1848. Before this, the concept of private property did not exist in Hawaii . Though he has the highest net worth, Zuckerberg is far from the only wealthy outsider—or even the only billionaire—to purchase land and call Kauai their part-time home. Just south of the Zuckerberg property, Melaleuca billionaire Frank VanderSloot recently dropped $51 million on 2,000 acres of ranchland. As land becomes more desirable to wealthy mainlanders, properties increase in value, forcing locals to leave . “The people who are born and raised here can’t afford to live here,” says Laurel Brier, a former vocational counselor who lives a few miles south of the Zuckerberg compound. “And we have this whole new economy that is basically serving at the rich peoples’ whims. I don’t know how stable those kinds of jobs are.”

“It’s crazy that a man not from Hawaii comes here and purchases a bunch of land that limits the locals [from potentially buying] land,” says John, the former laborer on the Zuckerberg compound. “But it’s already been happening.”

Neighborhood watch sign with a vast green lawn behind it and the horizon of the ocean in the distance

It’s been happening, and not just on Kauai. As the amount and total net worth of billionaires continues to grow in the US, many have used their wealth to purchase island seclusion and security.

This year, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos spent $147 million buying two mansions on Indian Creek Island in Florida, which is also home to the likes of Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. The smaller Hawaiian island of Lanai, off the coast of Maui, is now almost completely owned by Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison .

New Zealand, considered by some to be the ideal place to wait out an apocalyptic event, is now riddled with bunkers for the tech elite. Recently reinstalled OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has an arrangement with Peter Thiel, first revealed to The New Yorker , where the pair will take a jet to one of Thiel’s New Zealand properties in the case of an apocalyptic event. In his book Survival of the Richest , media theorist Douglass Rushkoff describes meeting with a group of billionaire preppers who bombarded him with questions about how best to configure their bunkers to survive the end times.

WIRED showed some of the planned bunker-esque elements of the Zuckerberg compound to Rushkoff earlier this year. “In order to justify having a palace, you’ve got to show you’ve done basic due diligence on its bunker capabilities,” Rushkoff says of the plans. “It shows it’s not just luxury. This is your skin in the game.”

In his book, Rushkoff criticizes what he calls “the mindset”—a belief that “with enough money and technology, wealthy men can live as gods and transcend the calamities that befall everyone else.” In doing so, he writes, they apply the same exit strategy of Silicon Valley startups to civilization itself.

“If anybody has enough money to insulate himself from the damage created for society, it would be Zuck,” says Rushkoff. “That’s sort of what it is. He’s destroyed the government and society, and now he can go to Hawaii and build a fort.”

Kristin Cavallari Tries To Sell Nashville Home For Triple What She Paid For It

Jinger duggar expects to make nearly $1 million after listing l.a. home, drake net worth: god's plan for making drizzy too good, quick links, an enormous mansion turns into a $37 million compound, zuckerberg stops at nothing to build his estate, construction controversy swirls, he has many more plans.

When it comes to lavish living, Mark Zuckerberg can most certainly afford the very finest of everything . He's currently worth an astounding $68.9 billion and is poised to continue dramatically increasing his net worth with future earnings. Of course, everyone is well aware of the fact that he can have anything he wants, and it goes without saying that each of his many multi-million dollar residences is an absolute stunner. However, new information has come to light that suggests one of his mega mansions just got a whole lot bigger t han anyone could have ever imagined. That has a lot to do with the fact that he has just purchased the neighborhood that surrounds his estate, and has turned it the four homes in his immediate vicinity into a private compound.

Mark Zuckerberg doesn't just own a very impressive mansion - he happens to own a very impressive mansion that is now part of a 5-home custom designed compound. Zuckerberg, who has more than enough financial backing to pursue an architectural project such as this one, had originally purchased a $7 million home in Palo Alto. This home was updated to reflect the needs of his family, but seemingly, this luxurious abode wasn't enough for Zuckerberg, it was just the beginning.

He had his eye on the residences and properties surrounding him. A neighbor had planned to sell the homes to a developer, who was intending to build a bigger house and market it for resale, using the fact that Zuckerberg lived in the area as a major selling point. Instead, Zuckerberg scooped up the four homes that surrounded him, as well as the properties belonging to each.

Buying up the immense property and residential structures that surrounded him was just the beginning of Zuckerberg's big plans. He then proceeded to initiate extensive construction to completely custom design the region and turn it into his very own residential masterpiece.

Nestled in a very prestigious area of Silicon Valley, Zuckerberg transformed the property he had first purchased in 2011 to include the 4 other homes and created his own estate, and what he paid for this privilege might shock you. He overpaid significantly for each home, dropping a total of $30 million for the ability to live in his own neighborhood. One of the homes was purchased as far back as December 2012 for $4.7 million. Records show that another was scooped up for $10M in 2013,

He now sits atop a $37 million property that is absolutely enormous in size. He renovated two of the homes and demolished the other two entirely. He then went on to replace the two mansions he demolished by replacing them with two, one-storey homes that were designed to his liking. There's a very specific reason he built single storey residences...

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife were living out their dreams, and were delighted to be building this new compound for their young children. However, there were many people surrounding them that were far less excited about this compound's construction process.

He faced a setback when the city of Palo Alto's Architectural Review board blocked his bid to demolish all four homes. They were not in favor of having an overwhelmingly large compound located in an area where single-family residential dwellings were already so few and far between. They denied Zuckerberg's original plans, citing permit issues and formally lodging their complaints.

By demolishing two homes and building simple one-storey dwellings, Zuckerberge was cleverly able to side-step any permit issues, as one-floor houses don't require the approval of council. Zuckerberg's new twist on his construction plans were unstoppable, and he pushed forward.

In spite of the uproar that was quite literally surrounding him, Zuckerberg pressed on, and has estimated his renovations and construction plans will run a $1.56 million price tag. He ahs defended his construction plans by stating that he and his family love the character of their neighborhood, admire the trees that surround them, and are looking to preserve the space that surrounds them.

At this time, the five properties now appear as three homes that are connected to the main Zuckerberg residence. A recently released aerial view depicts an enclosed rectangle of properties that boasts a garden in the middle, and a pathway that connects four properties to an entrance that leads to the main home.  His central home includes an oversized roof and has jungle gym for his children in the backyard.

This compound is already incredibly impressive, but Zuckerberg insists that his vision has not yet been fully embraced. There is one more house which remains detached from the others, on the northeast portion of his main property. He has plans to demolish that one, too. He is pushing forward with many more elaborate plans, much to the dismay of the locals in the community.

At this time, it has been stated that Zuckerberg is intending to strike this home and rebuild it into a two-storey mansion. If all goes to plan, this home will feature a 3,554 square foot home. It will have a 789 square foot garage, 1625 square foot basement, and a 691 square foot "detached accessory unit" in the rear yard.

There's no telling what Mark Zuckerberg will do next with this impressive land that he lives on and is surrounded by. No details have been released pertaining to the features and amenities he has put into his $37 million property, but his fans are hoping to one day catch a glimpse of the luxurious elements that surround this business mogul.

Last Updated -- January 7th, 2022

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg’s Lake Tahoe House

Imagine you’re the founder of a digital conglomerate that regulates, updates and streamlines the attention span of social media users across the globe.

Unworldly, right?

Well, it’s Mark Zuckerberg’s reality! The CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., (formerly known as Facebook) has transformed his dreams into reality by changing the social media landscape.

Hence, it comes as no surprise when one learns that the media magnate owns two mansions on Lake Tahoe worth 59 million USD!

Spread over 10 acres, Mark Zuckerberg’s house consists of 15 bedrooms along with spacious piers for placing boats.

Carousel Estate and Brushwood Estate were constructed in the 20th century. However, both of Mark Zuckerberg’s mansions have undergone opulent renovations in recent times.

Privacy is one factor in which Mark doesn’t like to compromise. The Lake Tahoe home is not the first adjacent property owned by the social media mogul. Another factor that contributes to Zuckerberg’s family privacy is the rich greenery.

Mark now owns 600 ft. of private waterfront between his lakeside properties. At the time of purchase, As the report suggests , he had an eye on a 3 rd property as well, but it was across the street.

Mark Zuckerberg's Homes

Zuckerberg will surely be having a good company with his neighbours. The neighbourhood of Mark Zuckerberg’s house also accommodates the family of Late Bill Hewlett.”

The view from these two residences is just stunning! It’s absolutely worth 59 million USD.

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife purchased this property together and the scenic views from the mansion ooze serenity. Be it the warmth of sunrise or the amazingly beautiful sunset, this place gives you countless views of nature.

  • The primary mood board of Mark Zuckerberg’s house is built on rustic tones and vintage collections and the interior designers have made sure to take the brief in practice.
  • One of Mark’s Lake Tahoe properties, named the Carousel Estate, has a traditional touch of architecture. This property is on the west shore of the area which is quite popular.
  • The Carousel Estate is divided into 3 major quarters which are connected through a magnificent passageway that ties them together. It consists of nine bathrooms, eight bedrooms and multiple fireplaces.
  •  A caretaker’s house is also built on the property but it’s still uncertain whether the Zuckerberg family has employed a caretaker or not. However, if one thinks practically, a 3.5-acre property, sitting in front of a lake won’t be able to take care of itself.
  •  Apart from this estate, Mark also owns a second lavish property that consists of 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. When it comes to the interior of this second apartment it has all the things to showcase from a high-beamed ceiling to hot bathtubs and a private dock for himself.
  • The other highlight that can be included in his equity is his 2293 square feet guesthouse.
  • After witnessing the fact that Zuckerberg has about 15 bedrooms, he obviously has guests come over. And the most frequent visitor that you can see at his place is his fellow tech founder that usually comes over and hangs out with him.

Mark clearly loves purchasing homes near water bodies. He bought two properties in Kauai, Hawaii for an incredible 100 million USD. These two gigantic properties cover an area of 750 acres. As the property is located adjacent to water, a cool breeze circled the area even during the warm summer days. Also, we have a very strong feeling that the dock on the outskirts of Mark’s Tahoe accommodation will be stacked with multiple boats on the pier.

 Literary Pool Table

This zone is built with the purpose of aligning the competitive and literary habits of the social media entrepreneur. The rustic pool table and built-in bookshelves appear traditional, yet stylish. They bring an element of warmth to the space and the décor makes it a potential conversation starter at Zuckerberg’s home.

EXCLUSIVE: Mark Zuckerberg's $37M 'five-house estate' in Palo Alto is seen in aerial photos for the first time after years of battles with neighbors over compound

  • Exclusive DailyMail.com photos show aerial views of Mark Zuckerberg's $37million compound in Silicon Valley that has been at the center of a years-long dispute with neighbors
  • The Facebook founder and CEO has transformed his original $7M Palo Alto home that he purchased in 2011 into a massive estate after buying the four surrounding properties worth a combined $30M
  • Zuckerberg's bid to demolish the four houses to start from scratch was denied by the city's Architectural review board in 2016 due to concerns he'd create one giant residence where single-family homes are scarce
  • The tech entrepreneur's architect denied he had such plans but Zuckerberg then ended up renovating two and demolishing two, replacing them with one-story homes, which don't need council approval
  • But photos appear to show that Zuckerberg is creating a giant compound for his family. This is the first time the five properties have been pictured aerially
  • There is also now a pending permit submitted last month to 'deconstruct' one home which is detached and build 'a new two-story single family home with an attached garage and basement
  • The works are estimated to cost $1.56M

Mark Zuckerberg 's $37million 'five-house compound' in Silicon Valley is pictured for the first time after years of complaints from neighbors over his plans to build a massive family estate.

The 37-year-old founder and CEO of Facebook has transformed his original $7million Palo Alto home that he purchased in 2011 into a massive estate after buying the four surrounding properties for hugely inflated prices totaling $30million.

Zuckerberg scooped up the other homes after a neighbor planned to sell them to a developer, who wanted to build a bigger house and market the property to potential homebuyers as living next door to the Facebook owner.

But the tech entrepreneur faced a setback in 2016 when the City of Palo Alto's Architectural Review Board blocked his bid to demolish the four houses to start from scratch, fearing he would create one giant residence in an area where single-family homes are already scarce.

However, his architect, Kathy Walker of Walker-Warner Architects, denied that he had plans to create a luxury compound just for his family - wife Priscilla Chan, 36, and children Maxima, six, and August, four - during a public board meeting five years ago.

'They bought the original house and these other properties in the neighborhood because they love the character of the neighborhood, its significant trees and the very residential scale and the variety of homes, and that's what we're endeavoring to preserve,' Walker said at the time.

Instead, Zuckerberg watered down his plans by renovating two and demolishing two, replacing them with one-story homes, thereby sidestepping any permit issues since one-floor houses don't need council approval.

But now these exclusive DailyMail.com photos appear to show that Zuckerberg is creating a giant compound for his family.

This is the first time the five properties have been pictured aerially and three of the four acquired properties are now connected to the main Zuckerberg family home, which is the one with the largest roof and children's jungle gym in the backyard.

At the time of the board's decision, Norm Beamer, president of the Crescent Park Neighborhood Association, argued that Zuckerberg shouldn't be allowed to create one glam palace.

He told the local newspaper: '(Zuckerberg) should not be allowed to remove housing from the housing inventory. There is such a scarcity of housing. And he's tearing down perfectly good houses and wasting resources.'

The association failed to respond when asked for further comment.

There's one house, which remains detached, north east of the main property, but possibly not for much longer, since Zuckerberg now wants to demolish that one too.

Zuckerberg runs the risk of creating more bad blood with the local community by attempting to push through new plans submitted last month to 'deconstruct' the present home, and build 'a new two-story single family home with a single story, 3,554 sq ft, attached garage, 789 sq ft, basement 1625 sq ft, and detached accessory unit in rear yard, 691 sq ft.'

The works are estimated to cost $1.56million.

Yet these photos show that there's construction machinery already on site and work may have started already despite the city's building department rejecting his demolition plans as 'incomplete' and the other two building permits 'in plan check' i.e. under review.

But this isn't the first time that Zuckerberg has been accused of jumping the gun with renovations.

The residents close to his $10million city pad in San Francisco's Mission District complained about his renovations taking over the street, which started soon after he bought it in 2013, and lasted nearly three years.

He was issued permits for renovations including $65,000 for the kitchen and bathrooms, $750,000 for a rear and side wing, and $720,000 for an office, media room, mudroom, laundry room, wine room, and wet bar.

San Francisco city council publicly logged the property's complaints and one local objected stating that construction had already started without a permit and that an 'east side of the external wall [had] already [been] taken down.'

The following year, another neighbor said there had been an 'underestimating [of] construction cost, work beyond the scope of permit'.

Another complainant added: 'Lots of dust and it's not properly contained. Complainant's son has asthma.

'Construction workers leave a lot of garbage behind after lunch and they park on the sidewalks and even double par. Lots of noise between 7am - 5pm (sometimes later).'

While in 2015 with renovations entering their third year, neighbors complained that electrical work was being done without a permit 'for the past six weeks or longer' and Zuckerberg's builders were 'creating a lot of construction debris on the job site and neighbor's properties.'

When the renovations were finally finished, some residents were irked that his security team was hogging the best parking spots, penning a letter which was circulated around the neighborhood.

They complained that they had put up with the 'very long construction, the noise and the trash… now that the circus is done, we are left with 2 silver SUV's permanently occupying desirable parking spots.'

The owner had 12 building permits issued since June 2019 to completely overhaul the house, including doors and windows, and 'excavate for a fully below-grade basement'.

In January, it was necessary for a building permit to be issued to 'underpin the property line wall due to foundation work' between Zuckerberg and the neighbor's property with 'approximately 28 linear feet of underpinning'.

This is normally to protect the properties foundations and, more unusually, because of subsidence.

Builders Moroso Construction didn't respond to a request for comment.

There was also a complaint about his neighbor's work from an unknown resident, stating: 'Extremely loud generator running constantly. Even from a building down the street with windows closed it is louder than our conversations.'

Zuck’s Tahoe estate: Blueprints show thermal cameras, lakeside spa and 11 buildings

A photo illustration shows Mark Zuckerberg and a rendering of his planned Lake Tahoe estate.

Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is building a massive private compound on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, planning documents show.

His new 11-building manor lies on roughly 10 acres of lakeside real estate bought for $59 million. The new home will be constructed from dark timber planks and have large windows in front, renderings show. But that’s not all.

Once completed, there will be eight new structures including an L-shaped family home, two guest houses, a lakeside spa and gym, a security gatehouse, a storage shed, a home office and a cottage plans show. The plans also keep the existing home and cottage at 2360 Sunnyside Ln. but require demolishing other buildings to accommodate the new development.

The image is a site map depicting two properties on Sunnyside Lane, labeled 2340 and 2360, with buildings, driveways, and landscaping details. Lake Tahoe is identified on the right.

Two security thermal cameras will be mounted on the pier facing the lake, plans show. The Meta founder’s Tahoe estate plans were first reported by SFGATE .

To build the estate, Zuckerberg first had to acquire two neighboring properties. The first of these was the Carousel Estate, which included three 1930s buildings—two homes around 3,200 square feet each and a roughly 2,000-square-foot guest home that have been demolished, according to permit records and aerial photos. The estate was bought from the family of late investment banker Robert Quist, according to news reports.

Zuckerberg purchased the Carousel Estate for $22 million in December 2018 and bought the Brushwood Estate for $37 million in January 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported . The new complex will spread across the two neighboring parcels.

The Brushwood Estate was owned by San Francisco philanthropist Tamara Fritz and was the site of the annual Oscar de la Renta fashion show, according to various news reports.

The estate purchases were quietly made through a limited liability corporation, Golden Range LLC. It, in turn, is run by a Delaware LLC managed by two partners of investment firm ICONIQ Capital, which claims to manage Zuckerberg’s finances.

A rustic cabin with large windows sits in a wooded area. Three people are seen near the cabin, with one standing inside and two others outside. The setting is serene and lush.

Meta, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and Seattle-based architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson did not respond to requests for comment.

A resident who recently sold their vacation home within walking distance from Zuckerberg’s planned compound and who spoke on condition on anonymity said homes in the area are “old” and “family-oriented.” She said when she last visited in September that construction of the billionaire’s home was still in its early phases.

“It looks like what they were doing was very tasteful,” the former neighbor said. “I’m sure everyone hopes that he doesn’t build some monster.”

Mark Zuckerberg House: Lakefronts, Beachfronts, and More Than a Few Grumpy Neighbors

Mark 's house photos.

Updated on April 19, 2021

Mark Zuckerberg is known for a few things, being the CEO of Facebook is probably the best thing he’s known for, of course. I think I speak for all of us when I say we thank him for that gem! He and his wife Priscilla Chan are also huge contributors to charity, which is an amazing thing. They pledged to donate 99% of their Facebook shares to charity. Three cheers! Let’s take a dive into all things Mark Zuckerberg house and cars!

mark zuckerberg house

While they’ve done an amazing job working to make the world a better place, Zuckerberg has also ticked some people off along the way…I mean, I wouldn’t mind having one of the richest people in the world as one of my neighbors, but it seems that view isn’t shared universally…

Where is Mark Zuckerberg House?

Our favorite social media kingpin owns homes scattered across the west, from the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in Kauai, Hawaii, several homes in Palo Alto, California, Lake Tahoe, to the San Fransisco Bay Area. I can hardly keep my excitement at bay, so take a little walk with me through the many homes and estates of Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan.

Mark Zuckerberg House Palo Alto

Mark Zuckerberg’s Palo Alto home may look like a humble little abode, but when you take a peek at what’s going on in there, you realize that it just may be worth every penny. Loaded with over 5000 square feet and decorated modestly, this five-bedroom, five-bath home is a specimen in suburbia.

The kitchen in the Silicon Valley home is spacious and has a bit of country charm to it, but don’t be fooled by the laid-back look of this house! Not only does the bathroom feature a marble deep soak tub and heated floors, but the home is rumored to have been upgraded with Zuckerberg’s very own state-of-the-art, custom Artificial Intelligence Assistant. Alexa, is that you?

The backyard is my kind of place. It’s decked out with a spa, fireplace, an area for barbecues, entertainment pavilion, and a saltwater pool. And how much is Mark Zuckerberg house? Well, he bought the home in 2011 for 7 million dollars but has since played a bit of Crescent Park Monopoly, snatching up four other surrounding properties. He dropped $43 million on these according to the Wall Street Journal, planning to demolish and rebuild, although the city nixed that idea, so he renovated two, and rebuilt the others.

Mark Zuckerberg House Hawaii

Some might shy away from dropping such a fortune on a property or two, but I say if you’re buying in Kauai, go big or go home! Zuckerberg fanned the Benjamins and spent 100 million dollars on his jaw-dropping getaway on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

The properties include an 89% stake to a secluded beach known as Pila’a Beach, which is public but not easily accessible. Altogether I’m talking about 750 acres worth of amazing Hawaiian land, lush greenery, beaches, and even an old sugarcane plantation. You heard me. The plantation is also home to a working organic farm and has critters like goats and turtles.

Oh, and in case 750 acres didn’t sound like quite enough, have no fear! The Facebook CEO picked up another 89 acres for a quick $45 million. Ah, well, now we all feel better!

While I’m sure you’re interested in where the party’s at, and I’m here to tell you that we’re sleeping on the beach or jetting back off to the hotel at the end of the night, because at this point Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan haven’t quite put a house on it yet. He’s had a tug of war with Hawaiian locals, some of whom own deeds to some of the parcels on his land.

Kuleana, a very old Hawaiian value, means “responsibility.” According to the locals, their land was given to them in perpetuity, for all future generations. The idea of private land itself is foreign here, where land has always been sort of communal in nature.

Although he seems to be clashing with those on the island, he says his biggest aim in buying was “[dedication] to preserving its natural beauty.”

Mark Zuckerberg House San Francisco

Back stateside, in the bay area, on a street, upon a hill–in a bit of a rougher part of town, sits a townhouse Zuckerberg snatched up in 2013. The homes in this area are cute, with that real San Francisco feel to them. His home sits on a 9,800 square foot lot just bubbling over with sidewalk frontage–um, have you been to San Fran? This is a big deal! Apparently, if you are worth as much as a social media genius, you get a 70 square-foot curb.

The house reportedly dates all the way back to 1928, and in Dolores Heights, a few blocks from Market Street and The Castro. He bought the house for a cool $10 million but set the mood for a riotous block party when he spent around 1.6 million dollars to renovate the San Francisco Bay townhouse…and took 17 months to do it.

Neighbors took to social media and the city to complain that they couldn’t use the parking on their street because so many extra vehicles were around utilizing the space. I don’t imagine the noise was a pleasant thing to deal with, either, for a year-and-a-half, while he popped in a new entertainment room, greenhouse, and wine room. Take me for a tour, Zuck!

Mark Zuckerberg Lake Tahoe House

Last on our virtual tour of the Zuckerberg-Chan real estate is a bonus! Why? Because it’s a two-fer and includes some chin-scratchable nondisclosure agreements! The story goes that our Facebook mogul was in the market for another estate–or two–and decided to go about his purchases on the shores of Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, California with more than a little bit of secrecy.

It wasn’t until the following year that news spread that it was Zuckerberg himself who picked up the Brushwood and Carousel Estates, as they are now called, for $59 million. The Carousel Estate is a picturesque beauty, and I mean it’s worth every penny, hands down. It is almost like a fairy tale house in the woods, white, rising out of lush greenery, surrounded by trees. It’s definitely a picture of surrealism.

It sits on three and a half acres, and there is a cute little path lined with flowers that shoots out from the house toward the lake. I don’t know about you, but I picture little kids picking flowers for their moms and grandmas to put in vases on the table in the kitchen. Seeing as the Zuckerberg-Chans have grown by one, this may not be all that crazy to picture.

Inside, the Carousel Estate is equipped with eight bedrooms and nine full- and one half-bath. Hang on–let me pick my jaw up off the floor. Okay, I’ll resume: the ceilings are high, it has a wood-burning stove, and has a caretakers’ quarters on the premises. This home is also broken up into three separate living quarters, distinguishable by breezeways so they’re all kept under the same roof. Family reunion at the Zuckerberg’s, anyone?

The Brushwood Estate, dated to the 1920s, was the bigger of the two real estate bills, at 37 million bucks. It sits right next to the Carousel Estate and grows the land he’d already bought by another six acres. This gives him a final Lake Tahoe land-buy of 9.5 acres, with 200 feet of private waterfront between the two properties. No knocking hips with strangers at the public beach because the place is so packed! I guess when you’re rich and famous you need the privacy, anyway…paparazzi and such. His private beach is also home to two docks–one pier-style dock long enough to accommodate a yacht that is fifty feet long!

The Brushwood Estate is loaded, as well, with six bedrooms, and a whopping five full-bathrooms and another two half-baths. The outside is amazing and showcases the lake beautifully among the trees, and you can also have a fire in the outside fireplace while you watch boats go by. I love that there is a guesthouse with this one, too. An extra perk.

Mark Zuckerberg Wife

A philanthropist and pediatrician, wife Priscilla Chan graduated from Harvard University and got a medical degree from UC San Francisco. She and Mark Zuckerberg have donated billions of dollars to charities, including San Francisco General Hospital, Bay Area public schools, and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. ABCNews calls her one of the “most prominent philanthropic leaders of her generation,” based on her amazing contributions to education, healthcare, and science.

Currently, she’s on the warpath against rare diseases and is heading the “Rare as One” project aimed at building databases for people with rare diagnoses in order to help figure out how to resolve them. Go, Priscilla!

Did Mark Zuckerberg Graduate from College?

Much like another technology typhoon, Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard University. In 2017, however, he returned to his old stomping grounds to deliver a commencement speech and they gave him an honorary degree, so technically no, but honorarily–yes!

Mark Zuckerberg House and Cars

What car does Zuckerberg drive, you ask? Lamborghini? Nope. Delorean? Nope. Our humble Facebook CEO actually drives a Honda Fit Hatchback. Fuel economy is crucial to a man with so many houses to travel between! In addition to the Honda, Zuck might be spotted cruising in a Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback or an Acura TSX Sedan. That, or he has taken to the skies!

How Much Money is Mark Zuckerberg Worth?

There are conflicting reports of Mark Zuckerberg’s actual net worth, but one thing is for sure: it’s more than 70 billion dollars, and possibly in the neighborhood of 75 billion dollars, ope, I’m sorry, I choked on the “B” in the B-B-Billion after the seventy-five there. Again, scooping my jaw off of the floor. It’s beginning to bruise.

Mark Zuckerberg Dog

What kind of person would I be if I solely talked about real estate, a deep soak tub, waterfront properties on the shores Lake Tahoe, and didn’t talk about a man’s dog? Brother to their baby girl, Max, his name is Beast. He is a Puli, a type of pooch that you couldn’t distinguish from a mop if they were side-by-side in a closet. The first time I saw him, in a picture of Mark Zuckerberg sitting on a couch with Beast lying beside him, I will truthfully tell you that I thought the pup was an odd choice of decorative pillow. A second glance, and he’s cuuuuuuuute!

…Where can I get one? Take all my money!

Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people in the world. He is a businessman and serves as the CEO of major social media platform, Facebook. With Zuckerberg's successful entrepreneurial career, have you ever wondered how a billionaire like him lives?

Well, wonder no more.

This article features Mark Zuckerberg's $59 million mansion in Lake Tahoe, California.

Zuckerberg first acquired a part of the $59 million property by buying a $22 million mansion in December 2018. A month later, the Facebook CEO would also acquire the property next door, which saw Zuckerberg shell out $37 million.

The larger property, which Zuckerberg purchased for $37 million, encompasses over 7,000 square feet of living space for the main mansion alone. Originally constructed in 1964, the larger property also has two other guesthouses sitting on the land which increases the living space by 4,000 square feet.

On the other hand, the smaller property bought by Zuckerberg at $22 million, is situated on 3.5 acres of land. Moreover, the property also features guesthouses.

In order to keep the acquisition under the watchful eyes of the public, Zuckerberg utilized a corporate entity to complete the transaction. In fact, all parties involved were reportedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements.

Here are some photos of Mark Zuckerberg's $59 million mansions.

In total, the two properties combined for $59 million. Furthermore, they also encompass 17,342 square feet of living space. Mark Zuckerberg's property acquisitions also include 15 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. His homes include spacious living rooms, modern kitchens, decent dining areas, a games room with a library, and sizable lounge areas.

Outside the homes, the property's backyard is as spacious as it gets. Zuckerberg's property includes a swimming pool, lake loading docks, a spa, an outdoor dining area, an outdoor kitchen, and plenty of green spaces similar to an ecopark. Furthermore, the property should allow Zuckerberg to enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe. Given the compound's size, the Facebook founder should have no problems feeling cramped up in his property. Moreover, he certainly has easy access to the outdoors.

Mark Zuckerberg is considered to be one of the richest people in the world. According to Celebrity Net Worth , he is worth around $90 billion. As a result, the Facebook founder can easily afford to live a luxurious lifestyle.

Nevertheless, this is all the information that we have on Mark Zuckerberg's $59 million mansion.

A Trip Inside Mark Zuckerberg’s Sprawling, Embattled Compound in Hawaii

Pilaʻa, Kauai — Last Sunday morning, more than a dozen cars were parked along a six-foot wall built around Mark Zuckerberg’s vast retreat on the northeast corner of Kauai, a small, remote Hawaiian island that’s home to 70,000 people. The gate, which is almost always locked shut, was open, so you could walk right past the Facebook-blue sign that reads “PRIVATE PROPERTY Thank you for not trespassing.” The lava rock wall, which Zuckerberg started building in 2016, inflamed some of his neighbors. It’s built on a bluff a mile from the ocean and now stretches for nearly a mile along Zuckerberg’s property, making it impossible to see the water from the road.

Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan acquired more than 700-acres on Kauai in 2014 by purchasing two adjacent beachside properties reportedly for more than $100 million . Last year, he purchased another 89-acres for $45.3 million . His property extends a mile inland over a former sugarcane plantation. Multiple streams flow across the land to the ocean, carving out forested valleys through rolling pastures grazed by cattle.

While the Facebook CEO likely hoped this corner of Kauai would be his private oasis, his property is peppered with more than a dozen smaller parcels of what are called Kuleana lands—land that was awarded during the 1850s and has been passed down for generations by local families. For the last several years, these lands Zuckerberg doesn’t own have been the source of simmering conflict with the community, as he has taken aggressive steps to buy or otherwise control a part of Kauai.

In the latest development in the ongoing saga, we were let inside Zuckerberg’s gates for an open house of sorts for four of these properties, which as a result of an arcane measure called a quiet title action will be auctioned on the front steps of Kauai’s Fifth Circuit Court Building on March 22.

The crowd waiting to tour the property included a mix of Hawaiians, Kauai residents, lawyers, journalists, and Zuckerberg employees. Many people seemed to already know each other. Some exchanged a hug and kiss on the cheek, as customary in Hawaii.

In theory, the people that showed up were all there to decide if they want to bid, but really, many came for the rare opportunity to glimpse inside the compound of one of the richest people the world. The whole act of building a giant wall invites intrigue and suspicion.

“I’m just curious to see what it looks like, and I’m curious what he’s doing with it because I’ve heard a lot of different things,” said Steph Klockenbrink, a 24-year-old who runs an organic farm on the same street as Zuckerberg’s property.

“It’s locked down a lot of the time, so just having the opportunity to see it is cool,” said Matthew James, a 28-year-old landscaper. “The fact that it seems hush-hush and no one really knows what’s going on kinda raises a red flag.”

It was hardly only curious observers, though. The controversy over the lands has prompted outrage, and some people were there to register their grievance and do research. Kaiulani Mahuka, who hosts a radio show on Kauai Community Radio about Hawaiian sovereignty, told me she was at the open house as a “Kanaka Maoli,” meaning Hawaiian, and said it was “a war crime to sell these lands.”

“The lands were deeded in perpetuity, and that means forever,” said Mahuka. “Kuleana, you don’t own it—your family belongs to it.”

Kuleana is a Hawaiian value that translates to responsibility and refers to the reciprocal relationship people have with the land to care for it. The land, in turn, has a kuleana to provide and care for its stewards. In the 1850s, the Hawaiian Kingdom allocated the Kuleana lands, which were intended to go to Hawaiians who already lived on and worked the land. Before this, Native Hawaiians did not conceive of land ownership but instead shared land communally. The Kuleana lands were meant to be passed down to descendants of the grantees forever.

Individual heirs now often claim tiny fractions, and some families collectively use the land. The quiet title action has been used to allow any co-tenant, regardless of the size of their stake, to dissolve relationships with other co-tenants, sort of like a divorce. The plaintiff who starts a quiet title action must notify everyone with an interest, which often requires detailed genealogy research to determine all of the heirs. The co-tenants can only stop the process once it has been initiated if they come up with an agreement. Otherwise, a judge will order all the shares be put up at public auction, forcing heirs to sell. Fighting the process can be prohibitively costly.

In late 2016, Zuckerberg owned intermediaries, which had acquired small stakes in the outstanding parcels within the bounds of his property, filed quiet title lawsuits. When news broke that he was using shell companies to launch what could be an expensive legal battle against people who didn’t necessarily want to sell their land, there was a public outcry, and Zuckerberg apologized, acknowledging in an op-ed that his strong-arm tactics were perpetuating a process that had led to the loss of land for Hawaiians. He promised to drop the suits.

Of course, he didn’t entirely give up, writing in a Facebook post at the time: “We are working with a professor of native Hawaiian studies and long time member of this community, who is participating in this quiet title process with us.”

Which brings us to Carlos Andrade, a retired Hawaiian studies professor, who owns 27 percent of the four parcels we’ve gathered to tour. He’s the great-grandchild of Manuel Rapozo, a Portuguese immigrant who bought the properties in 1894. Andrade, who is part Hawaiian through other ancestors, wrote in an email that he lived on and cultivated the parcels with his immediate family starting in the 1970s.

After Zuckerberg dropped his suits, Andrade remained the sole plaintiff on the quiet title lawsuit over the four parcels, and two years since the controversy started, a judge has ordered the auction of the lands. His attorney told me he “fully intends to bid” at the auction. Andrade did not directly address the question as to whether he was being paid by Zuckerberg, but noted that “I pursue these actions of my own volition.”

Ben LaBolt, a spokesman who handles Zuckerberg’s personal affairs said, “Mark has made clear his support for Dr. Andrade’s claim to the land given his stewardship of the property for over 40 years.”

To some, this resolution sounds a bit too tidy. “...[Zuckerberg] is absolutely going to be the one purchasing, because he wants them,” said Mahuka.

Wayne James Rapozo, who is a lawyer in London and a member of Manuel Rapozo’s extended family represents a group of relatives who are hoping to pool their money to bid on the property.

“This is our swan song,” he said. “We’re basically on the road to being outbid in a way that people are going to tell us it’s not Zuckerberg, but we don’t see any way that Carlos can afford this. It’s just humiliating.”

In a fact sheet handed out at the open house, the parcels were listed as having market values between $229,000 and $459,000, with the largest measuring 1.59 acres. None are served by public utilities.

We were loaded into three utility task vehicles (UTV) at the entrance to Zuckerberg’s property. Though the tour was ostensibly a court-ordered function, it was directed by Shawn Smith, the ranch manager employed by Zuckerberg, with the help of three assistants.

“[Zuckerberg] was very kind to allow me the courtesy of letting people see the parcels and providing me with drivers,” said Commissioner Patrick Childs, the attorney appointed by the court to oversee the case.

Riding the UTVs up and down the red dirt roads and through tree tunnels felt like an amusement park ride. A passenger screamed with glee like it was a roller coaster. (We all had to sign liability waivers to go on the ride.)

After a five minute drive in the direction of the ocean, we arrived at Andrade’s home, which he said he started building in the 1970s. Andrade’s lawyer Harvey Cohen described it as being built all out of recycled materials, which was evident when I saw a diagonally placed window on a green wall. An almost all-window room built on the top of the home probably has an incredible ocean view, but the doors to the house were locked. Cohen said Andrade comes to the property daily, but it seems to me that no one has lived here for years. Tufts of grass are growing out of the gutter.

“He never mālama,” one woman said aloud as we looked at the home. He never takes care.

The yard was overgrown but still happy, with coconuts dangling high above the property and an avocado full of flowers growing over a collapsed shed. Andrade said he planted the trees with his wife and three children.

Before we drove to the next parcel, Smith told us we could spend ten minutes at each property because there was another group now waiting to go on the tour.

“I definitely want you to be able to see them, but it’s kind of a balance we got to get the next crew out,” he said. “So we’ll do maybe ten minutes at each one, if that sounds fair?”

The people in the UTV with me said that they understood, but then joked to each other that it was because “they found out the Hawaiians were here.”

The UTVs took us on a minute-long ride in the direction of the mountains, which simultaneously jutted into the sky and cradled the earth. The next property had a pale green shack on it. A stream ran nearby, and there was a small orchard of tangerines and bananas.

On the way to the next property, cattle egrets flew into the sky, clearing the path for us, and making it feel like we were paniolo in old Hawaii. The third parcel had a trailer, farming equipment, and more sheds on it. At the edge of the property, a papaya tree was bursting with green fruits.

Instead of going to the fourth property—we were told it is too dangerous for the UTVs—we looked over the edge of a valley to see it. All we could see were trees so thick that the canopy blocks out the sky.

:Megeso-William-Alan: Denis, who was dressed in a poncho and was carrying a koa stick adorned with peacock feathers, eagle talons, and a crystal, asked the commissioner if he could walk to the last parcel, but was told instead he could look at it on Google Earth and that he would be arrested if he continued.

Denis speculated Zuckerberg was building on an ancient Hawaiian trail that circles the island, known as the Ala Loa, and that he would have seen this construction if he had been allowed to go to the property. Ala Loa trails exist on every island and are protected by state law, although officials have said they have not yet determined the path of Kauai’s Ala Loa. Ultimately, the tension between the commissioner and Denis speaks to the suspicion surrounding Zuckerberg’s efforts to secure his private retreat .

The almost two-mile long coastline in front of Zuckerberg’s estate includes a couple of white sandy beaches separated by outcroppings of black lava rocks. His property sits above the ocean and slopes into these pristine beaches that are protected from big waves by a fringe reef.

Kauai County Councilmember Felicia Cowden, who was at the open house, told me she used to live a mile away from Zuckerberg’s property and before 2014 she would drive to the beach through the land because she was friends with her neighbors who lived there and they shared their access. Now that the majority of the land is owned by Zuckerberg, there’s no beach access for miles.

In the state of Hawaii, beach access is a public right , which includes the right to transit the shoreline. The public right to beach access and the Kuleana lands honor how Hawaiians lived before Western contact, when instead of owning land, it was stewarded for the community and the next generation. After the open house, I wanted to find out how difficult it is to access the beaches in front of Zuckerberg’s property.

I walked for almost a quarter mile down a red dirt path, over boulders, and across a stream to get to Pilaʻa Beach. Two girls were collecting seashells, a trio was fishing, and a family lounged in beach chairs. A sea turtle slipped from the sand into the steady rhythm of the ocean.

An ATV drove down a bluff from Zuckerberg’s property, and after my trek, I felt envious of their noisy, easy access to a place that is otherwise so quiet and secluded.

At the edge of this beach, there were more rocks, which could be crossed to reveal another sandy beach, but I’d run out of water and decided to walk back. Before heading to the beach on the east side of Zuckerberg’s property, I ran into open house attendees James and Klockenbrink, who helped me get water, since there are no facilities or convenience stores in this rural part of Kauai.

At Larsen’s Beach, there are two paths down to the ocean. I headed west and walked for about half a mile down a well-worn path. About halfway through the walk, it became clear I was at the edge of Zuckerberg’s estate because the land was lined with the same Private Property signs that were at his gate. It was hard to know where to walk without trespassing. Where does the beach stop and the property begin? The law says it’s below the “upper reaches of the wash of the waves.”

Large Laysan Albatross flew above me, a sea turtle sunbathed on the sand, and three Hawaiian monk seals rested on the beach. Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook in 2016 about buying the land and said he was “dedicated to preserving its natural beauty.”

I didn’t make it to the last beach at Waipakē, where there is a secluded sandy spot visible on Google Earth. This is where I imagine Zuckerberg drives down from his property when he wants to go to the beach and be by himself.

Correction: This post originally stated that Felicia Cowden used to walk to the beach through what is now Zuckerberg’s land. In fact, she drove through the land. We regret the error

Mark zuckerberg’s billion-dollar life: a look at his mansion collection.

Mark Zuckerberg is worth about $180 billion , though that number fluctuates with the prices of the stocks, commodities and other assets the man doubtless owns. Suffice it to say, “He is very, very wealthy .”

With that kind of pocket change, the Meta’s (née Facebook) founder could buy pretty much any property he wanted. So what kind of real estate does one of the world’s richest men buy and what does someone like Zuckerberg look for in a home? Some of the answers might surprise you.

Keep reading for a look at some of the real estate the tech mogul is known to possess , including a sprawling “privacy compound” only a 10-minute drive from Meta HQ, not one but two Tahoe retreats, and a property in Kauai that some call a “nature preserve” and others call a “doomsday bunker.”

Wealthy people know the best money secrets. Learn how to copy them .

Home Is Where the Heart Is

Zuckerberg is known to spend the bulk of his time in a relatively modest home he purchased in 2011 for the “bargain” price of $7 million in Palo Alto , a short 3-mile drive from Meta’s HQ at the appropriately named “1 Hacker Park” Menlo Park address . The home, though since upgraded with many amenities, including a custom AI assistant whose function can only be guessed at, isn’t the highlight of this residence.

It’s that Zuckerberg, shortly after marrying Priscilla Chan, spent an additional $43 million on the four homes surrounding his initial purchase, presumably for privacy reasons . Though exact prices (and many of the details surrounding Zuck’s real estate deals) are difficult to determine with any degree of certainty, buying out the neighbors still cost Zuckerberg a fair chunk of change.

A Modest Vacation Home — or Two

Lake Tahoe is lovely at any time of the year, and it makes sense that Zuckerberg would want a place to escape the pressures of running one of the world’s biggest social media empires. What’s better than one lakeside Tahoe property? Two.

As evinced by his initial homestead purchase, Zuckerberg likes to buy multiple adjacent properties, precisely what he did when selecting his Tahoe retreat. The two estates, the Brushwood and the Carousel, respectively, purportedly set the Zuckerberg family back a cool $59 million in total.

Considering they’re both lakeside properties covering 10 acres of nearly pristine nature, that’s a bargain for anyone who can afford it. One even has a guest home bigger than many people’s houses, at a “modest” 2,293 square feet.

The Hawaii Hideout

Last but not least, the Zuckerberg family’s Hawaii property may be the strangest — and most expensive — of the billionaire’s residences. He’s known to own at least 1,200 acres of land on Kauai, the first of which (roughly half the property he’s now said to own there) was a 750-acre plot of land picked up for $100 million.

It’s got the usual Hawaii benefits, like gorgeous white-sand beaches, the ceaseless sound of a gently lapping surf and the kind of climate, flora, and fauna the island state is known for. He’s known to have added another 600 acres to his initial holdings in 2021 for the comparatively cheap price tag of $53 million, and the publicly stated reasons behind these purchases in paradise are “personal retreat and conservation.”

However, there may be far more to the story than the public’s been told.

Of course, security personnel are to be expected around the home of any billionaire’s family, but a never-ending caravan of trucks hauling in construction materials and what’s been reported as “ hundreds of workers ” is a little out of the ordinary.

Many workers are reportedly bound by nondisclosure agreements, and they notoriously won’t speak with reporters asking about what’s going on behind the six-foot tall walls that obstruct much of the property from view.

Planning documents are usually a matter of public record, and sources have uncovered blueprints that suggest the Zuckerberg property, known as Koolau Ranch, houses a 5,000-square-foot underground “shelter,” with electrical generators, ample supplies of food and water and (when factoring in the cost of the land purchased above what some are calling the “doomsday bunker), will end up costing upwards of $270 million.

That’s not exactly a drop in the bucket, even for a man worth $180 billion, but if you’ve got that kind of bankroll, why not be prepared for any eventuality?
