Azores Photography Tour

As we explored the Azores on the first ever Azores photography tour in 2024, we kept saying to ourselves: how are there no other photographers here? It’s far more photogenic that I personally expected, and far under-travelled than any of us expected.

In fact, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. In many ways, the harshness of the weather reminded me of Iceland. But there were spots on the islands that looked like they could be in Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Hawaii, or so many other places. And of course, much of it was totally unique to the Azores.

In 2025, I’ll be leading another photography tour and workshop to this incredible place.

Photos from The Azores

There are some beautiful photo spots in The Azores. Obviously, I haven’t had a chance to photograph them all. And, on my previous trip here I fought with bad weather. Still the images below were all taken on a 7 day trip to The Azores in February.

Siggi the Viking

Siggi the Viking

Siggi was born in Iceland and has spent most of his photography career in this paradise.During his time as a photographer, he early on found that his passion lies with photographing the beautiful landscapes and nightscapes of Iceland. One of his favorite activities is being out, chasing the northern lights and thinking of new ways to top his shots.

He has won multiple awards for his work, both locally and internationally, especially for his photos of the Aurora Borealis. Sigurdur has also written a book on the subject to aid everyone in getting the perfect shots of Lady Aurora and held nightscape photography workshops in Iceland since the beginning of 2012 with great success.

When the days get longer and the northern lights fade into the daylight, he turns his eyes towards the sun and the amazing midnight sun that Iceland has to offer with the golden hours that seem to stretch on forever.

GASTRONOMY, LANDSCAPE AND BOTANICAL PHOTOGRAPHY. FIVE DAYS AND THREE WORKSHOPS IN SÃO MIGUEL ISLAND

A visit to the island of São Miguel, accompanied by a professional, to photograph his favourite places.

You will have theoretical training on how to photograph landscape, gastronomy and botany and then you will photograph freely. Later he selects the best photographs of the day, and these are commented on by the formator.

The Landscape Workshop includes a visit to the fire lagoon, the old boiler, the goat vault, the tea plantation and the hell window rail. The botanical workshop includes a visit to the Terra Nostra Park and the gastronomy workshop will be held in a local restaurant.

The participants will, in a group, learn or improve their photography technique, contact the local population and appreciate its uses and customs (prepare and remove the stew in the boilers, from the furnaces) and exercise the art of photographing.

Visitors will learn that:

  • The island of São Miguel becomes even more mysterious, with the constant changes in tones, shapes and landscape.
  • All photographs are important, whether they are artistic or product, all of them have a purpose, to capture attention and it is with this intention that he realizes them.
  • For Pedro do Canto Brum the secret is in the light and in the shadow.
  • The watchful eye of the photographer knows when to fire the camera

Saõ Miguel Azores photography locations – a guide to the best Azores photo spots

Green and blue – these are the main colours i would describe the azores. beautiful landscapes and a marvellous coastline stuffed with hundreds of opportunities to capture amazing photographs. this guide to the best azores photo spots shows my favourite photography locations in saõ miguel on the azores. i am revealing the gps data, how i approached the composition, which equipment i advise to use in order to capture great photos and the settings of my photos. even if you’re not that much into photography, you can still follow these spots and you’ve got your saõ miguel itinerary. , saõ roque, ponta delgada, 37°44'58.5"n 25°37’54.1"w.

Saõ Roque is a 15-minute drive from Ponta Delgada. There is plenty of parking along the road. This spot is great for sunrise or sunset but it is also perfect for a cloudy morning or evening when taking the dramatic approach with dark clouds and black and white processing. I set up the tripod at the corner and wanted to show the dynamic of the waves when they move back to the ocean. You can also take the black rocks as a foreground and make use of the blue hour in case there is no sun to set.

Azores photography locations

f/9 | 10 s | 27 mm | ISO 100

Be careful when you shoot at the corner of this location. The waves might become high and very close to you and your camera. I ended shooting there soaked wet but I was able to turn the camera away the very last second.

Equipment: Wide angle or standard lens Tripod Optional: remote control (you can also use the 2s self-timer)

Vista do Rei, Lagoas do Sete Cidades

37°50'20.7"n 25°47’36.0"w.

The first photo location of Sao Miguel’s Lagoas do Sete Cidades is Vista do Rei. Just stop your car at the parking lane. I found this spot with poles to use as my foreground in order to show the whole depth of the lake. Also, the viewer of the image starts his view at the pole and finishes at the end of the lake. I used a polarizing filter to reduce the reflection of the clouds in the lake and intensify the colours.

Igreja De São Nicolau, Sete Cidades

37.862969, -25.797687.

When you continue the road from Vista do Rei you can make a quick stop for a coffee and photograph this beautiful church. It’s located at the end of a tree-lined road and the trees lead the viewer into the picture. Try portrait and landscape format.

Viewpoint of the ridge, Lagoas do Sete Cidades

37.881051, -25.773654.

Continue the road from the little church then turn right and take the gravelled road. It is advised to have a car with a little bit of horsepower when you go for this spot. Right at the very opposite of the first outlook Vista do Rei there is the viewpoint of the ridge – perfect to take a panorama shot.

Hold the camera still and take 3 shots. Start with the left side of the lake, continue to the centre and move on to the left. Blend the three images in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Ponta da Ferraria

37.861885, -25.851759.

This is an amazing location for sunset. Be there hours earlier and take your time because you might find plenty of different spots to shoot. It’s all about rocks, water and catching the dynamic of water reaching the rocks in all its power. The trick here is to capture the dynamic of the water. The shutter speed should not be too long, otherwise, the water will look too white and without structure.

Azores photography locations

f/9 | 25 s | 73 mm | ISO 100 This was taken from above right below the car park. I added an ND filter 1000 because it was still daylight and I wanted to get this effect of the water.

Thermal pool of Ribeira Grande

37.784471, -25.499845.

Thermal pools are really popular on the Azores. This one has an upper pool which is a great photo spot. It is beautifully embedded in nature with a little waterfall. Be there at 9.00 am when they open the gates. Entrance fee is 3 Euro per person without using the pools. The pool lies in the shadow. Set the ISO on 100 and choose an aperture of 9-11 in order to reach a shutter speed of approximately 1 second. You do not need a longer exposure, because you want some structure in the waterfall. Use a polarizing filter to eliminate reflections in the water.

Cascata do Salto do Cabrito

37.797906, -25.494780.

There are dozens of waterfalls on the Azores. Salto do Cabrito is very easily accessible. It is just a couple of meters walk from the car park but the road leading to this car park is very narrow and steep. You’ve got several options to capture the waterfall: try portrait and landscape format, position the tripod in front and on both sides and find out which perspective you like most.

Miradouro de Santa Iria

37.824946, -25.457017.

The Azores are famous for marvellous viewpoints. Santa Iria on the north coast of Saõ Miguel is one of them. The advantage of these viewpoints is that there is always parking very closely. You can capture these views with an ND filter to make the water appear very flat. The clouds were not moving fast enough to get a great effect on the clouds as well.

Chá Gorreana

37.819422, -25.398767.

Did you know that the Azores have tea plantations? Chá Gorreana in the north of the island is a must-stop on your itinerary. You can play with symmetries and your image compositions, black and white also works here. Finish your shooting with a delicious cup of tea in the factory.

Miradouro do Pico dos Bodes

37.747299, -25.217993.

This viewpoint is in the south-east of Saõ Miguel. You have to leave the main road and walk up about 10 minutes to reach the top. The curved wall works great in the photo and the view to the other side with the hills in front of the ocean is fantastic. With a bit of luck, the fog is coming in and you can capture the wonderful ocean view with a bit of mist.

Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego

37.800536, -25.144253.

This viewpoint is right at the main road in the east of the island. It is a beautiful small park with flowers and short trails to walk. Perfect for a little break from your road-trip. Try to work the wooden handrail in your composition.

Miradouro da Barrosa

37.763140, -25.490708.

This viewpoint is the best to look down to Lagoa do Fogo. You might need a bit of luck because fog is the best friend of the lake. It took me two attempts to see it in its glory. Spotazores.com is a great source to check the conditions. The website shows webcams of different locations and it tells you if Lagoa do Fogo is visible or hidden behind a thick layer of fog.

Terra Nostra Park in Furnas

37.772785, -25.315075.

The Terra Nostra Park in Furnas is a beautiful park with an amazing flora. I have never seen so many different ferns at one place – they’re perfect to try some abstract photography. You can spend a whole day there so plan quite a bit of time. You can also take a bath in the thermal pool if you fancy that.

I can strongly recommend to stay in the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel * from where you have direct access to the park at any time of the day.

This spot is great for sunset or sunrise. It has parking right next to the location. The poles of the fence are a perfect foreground to the hills and the ocean in the background. Be aware that it gets a bit windy and cold towards sunset.

Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz

37.733009, -25.431832.

This chapel is a wonderful piece of architecture and a must for symmetry lovers. The blue tiles work perfectly in contrast to the blue sky. Black and white is a great option, too. This place is amazing to play with symmetries, shadows and contrast. Besides, from the top of the chapel, you’ve got a fantastic view.

Mosteiros Beach

37.888622, -25.823311.

Mosteiros Beach is in the west of the island. There is parking right at the beach. Make sure to wear good shoes and be careful when you walk on the rocks. I recommend to visit this location for sunset but be there earlier to find your perfect position to capture the two rocks. You can play with long exposure and when the sun sets use a shorter shutter speed to capture the waves differently. You have to increase the ISO to do that. Check out at what maximum ISO your camera still delivers great results.

Nicola’s hot tips for long exposure shots: When you shoot with long shutter speed, make sure your tripod is steady. Hang your backpack on the hook to make it more stable. Keep the upper pole of the tripod low in order to avoid shaking. Switch off the image stabilizer on your lens and always use a remote or at least the self-timer. Do not touch the camera or the tripod during the exposure. If you have a DSLR you can also activate the mirror lockup.

I am offering customized photography tours. If you’re interested in a exclusive photography adventure, contact me. I’m happy to schedule a call to discuss the details.

Relatively easy but good footwear needed. Most locations and viewpoints are close to where we will be parked. There may be some walking on uneven terrain which could be wet and muddy, and some locations are hilly. Good sturdy, water resistant boots are advised.

Best place to fly to is Ponta Delgada Airport . If coming from the UK or within Europe, check for flights at Easyjet or Wizz Air or Ryanair .

For other flights try:

We will pick you up at Ponta Delgada airport

The weather can be quite cold this time of year, and the mornings and evenings colder, so warm clothes. Ideally layers that you can remove or put on as we’ll be shooting before sunrise and after sunset, in the dark, when it will be colder. Bring wet weather gear and a raincover for your camera equipment.

Best Photography Locations in Sao Miguel Azores Road Trip Guide

Lush, wild, and stunning; the Azores islands are a dream for photographers and lovers of the great outdoors and jaw-dropping scenery.

That’s why, being just back from there, we have decided to put together this comprehensive guide to the best photography locations in Sao Miguel Azores. For you all to explore this gem and decide whether it is worth your time (spoiler alert: IT PROBABLY IS!) before mass tourism devours it as it happened with other stunning destinations around the world.

Sao Miguel, the gateway to the Azores

azores photography tour

Closer than New Zealand for many and showcasing natural and geological phenomena comparable to Iceland, the ever-green Azores islands are slowly but surely starting to get noticed by the admirers of the great outdoors, warm climates, great food, affordable price tags, and overall, all-things-Portugal .

Today we are proud to showcase Sao Miguel (please note the correct spelling is São Miguel, not Saõ Miguel), the largest and most populated island within the Azores archipelago.

When to visit the Azores

azores photography tour

The short answer is always. However, let us explain:

The Azores archipelago is composed of nine islands and offers a pleasantly warm climate all year round with winter temperatures around 20 °C (68°F) and a few showers, and summer temperatures around 25-30 °C (77-86 °F).

What’s even better, as we have already mentioned before, the Azores islands are still not flooded with tourists during the low and shoulder seasons (from early-Autumn to mid-Spring) so if we had to pick the best time to visit the Azores, that would be between October and April should you are like us and prefer to visit them without the crowds. However, if that wasn’t an issue for you, head there from May to September. You could catch the best time to spot whales (May) and the chance of rains will be significantly smaller.

What to see in Sao Miguel

Sao Miguel island features breathtaking views such as the one from Lagoa das Furnas, volcanic peaks and lakes as Lagoa do Congro, waterfalls like Salto do Prego, picturesque towns like Ribeira Grande, Nordeste and the capital Ponta Delgada, tea plantations, black sand beaches like Mosteiros, and a rugged coast that surfers and those looking forward to getting close and personal with marine life particularly enjoy.

To get us started, here’s a short video that showcases some of the stunning landscapes you will find in this road trip guide to the best photography spots in Sao Miguel Island, Azores:

And without further ado, to save you time below is a map highlighting the top locations for photography in Sao Miguel. We have carefully picked 25 spots that will delight every visual person visiting this island.

How to get to the Azores Islands

Indeed, the most convenient way to get to the Azores is flying . These are all the companies that fly to the Azores today: Azores Airlines – SATA, Tap Portugal, Primera Air, Tui fly, Ryanair, Germania, and Delta.

For the adventurous souls out there, you can also arrive by boat. We know that the Azores are a common stop on Atlantic Ocean crossings . The best part is that traveling doesn’t get much more sustainable than sailing !

How to move around the island of Sao Miguel

azores photography tour

The best way to explore all the fantastic places Sao Miguel offers is by renting a car. We did see a few tour companies driving around small groups of tourists on Jeeps and 4-wheelers as well as a couple of public buses; but if traveling independently means anything to you, there’s no other way.

Azo res Easy Rent

2º Circular Posto de Abastecimento Galp Laranjeira 9500-353 Ponta Delgada São Miguel – Açores

A small vehicle was all we needed to drive around Sao Miguel Azores roads without spending a ton of gas. And this recently opened company provided us with the perfect vehicle for that: a Mitsubishi Space Star. But not only that, but they also answered all our questions about the island and gave us lots of great tips on places to see, restaurants to try, and spots we could not miss. Highly recommended!

Where to stay in Sao Miguel Azores

azores photography tour

Due to its small size, your best option is to choose a base and do day trips from there. All the three routes recommended in this guide of Sao Miguel started and ended in Ponta Delgada, our base during our time in Sao Miguel , the closest city to the airport and the largest hub on the island.

Hotel Marina Atlântico

Av. João Bosco Mota Amaral 1, 767, 9500-767 Ponta Delgada, Portugal

This luxury hotel is just a short walk away from the historic S.Pedro district. And its spacious and refined rooms have all the amenities you might need, and lots of them enjoy ocean views and a balcony overlooking Ponta Delgada’s port.

The hotel highlight for us was indeed its spa area with an indoor pool, whirlpool, gym, and sauna; which we used almost every day after returning from our island explorations. Because who would say no to a few minutes chilling in the jacuzzi before dinner?

Do you have somewhere beautiful to add to this Sao Miguel Azores photography list? Are you planning to visit Sao Miguel island of the Azores archipelago soon? Get in touch via email: aworldtotravel @ gmail . com

Disclaimer: We were invited to 4 nights at Hotel Marina Atlantico and an Azores Easy Rent car for the length of our stay.

azores photography tour

Welcome to the enchanting Terceira Island, where our journey begins amidst the charm of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo. Your adventure kicks off with a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, providing the perfect opportunity to connect with your fellow travelers. Feel free to inquire about any details regarding the upcoming trip; we’re here to ensure you have a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Following lunch, we venture into the captivating Black Forest, a unique location defined by its dense vegetation. The interplay of light within this forest creates an ever-changing atmosphere, making each photographic endeavor a distinctive experience.

Just a short drive away, we reach one of the island’s highlights – Algar do Carvão. This extraordinary site allows you to step inside a volcano, a rare opportunity as only two such locations exist in the world. Keep in mind that tripods are not allowed, so having your fastest and widest lens is essential to capture the awe-inspiring surroundings.

As we navigate through picturesque forest roads, hidden gems await our exploration. Depending on the weather, we’ll ascend to Serra de Santa Bárbara for a mesmerizing sunset. This vantage point, the highest on the island, provides a breathtaking panorama to conclude our day on Terceira.

Get ready to capture the essence of Terceira Island, where each moment promises a blend of natural wonders and unique cultural experiences.

Today’s itinerary is full of scenic views and coastal landscapes. We begin our journey at Serra da Ribeirinha, where we can admire the stunning vista of the shoreline from the edge of a volcanic crater. We can also see Serra do Morião and Serra Santa Bárbara on our right, as well as Monte Brasil and the islands of São Jorge and Pico in the distance.

Our next destination is Pico Dona Joana, a beautiful volcanic cone that offers a unique perspective of Ilhéu das Cabras, a small islet off the coast. This is one of the most photogenic spots in the Azores.

After lunch, we will explore the historic city of Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will walk along the colorful streets and admire the architecture, culture, and life of this charming city. Pay attention to the details, such as the doors, windows, and balconies, that make this city so special. You can also capture the patterns and textures of the cobblestone streets.

To end our day, we will head to Serretinha natural basalt pools, where we can enjoy the sunset over Ilhéu das Cabras. This is a perfect spot to take some amazing photos of the golden hour.

We start our morning at Ponta das Contendas lighthouse and its surrounding seascapes. A beautiful area with a not-so-common brown and black colored rock for the Azores. Depending on the weather, there is also a cave only accessible by sea that provides really interesting photo opportunities.

At noon, we arrive at Praia da Vitória and to truly complete the Azores experience, I invite you to enjoy a homemade lunch in a restaurant of a local family and get to know what it’s like to live in these islands.

We head out to the north part of the Island, to Ponta do Mistério. One of the Island’s most attractive coastal areas. A mysterious green-glazed lunar landscape, with the blue Atlantic Ocean in the background, creates an amazing sight.

Next, we visit the popular summer spot of Biscoitos. A picturesque town, known for its wine-growing region and even more for its beautiful natural pools. The rugged black-colored lava fields sculpted by waves make for really interesting landscapes.

Considered the most beautiful viewpoint in Portugal, we reserved the best for the last sunset in Terceira. The unique view of the interior of the island, known as the “patchwork”, consisting of walls of volcanic stones dividing the farmer fields into square-shaped figures, makes Serra do Cume the epic spot to photograph the last light of the day.

We say goodbye to Terceira and welcome you to São Miguel. After we settle on our accommodation, we head to the oldest tea plantation in Europe, Gorreana Tea factory. Get to know the factory and explore its surroundings. The landscape here is unique, the shape and texture of the green tea leaf’s creates endless photography possibilities.

Waterfalls, streams and lush vegetation of Ribeira dos Caldeirões on the northeast is our next location. The park also has a historical and cultural value, as it preserves some of the old water mills that were used for grinding cereals in the past.

Depending on the weather, for sunset we visit the beaches of Santa Bárbara and Monte Verde, or the jagged cliffs of Miradouro do Cintrão, overlooking the north coast and Sete Cidades volcano in the background.

The day starts at Lagoa do Fogo volcanic lake, and one of the highest points of the island. It usually tends to be cloudy or foggy during the day and ultimately ruin any potential view to be had. If you have a drone take full advantage of it. You can create really unique perspectives up here.

After breakfast we travel west and explore the volcanic crater of Sete Cidades, two multi-coloured lakes of Lagoa Verde and Azul. It’s an incredible sight and the best way to have a sense of the surrounding area.

We arrive at one of the highlights of the Azores, Grota do Inferno viewpoint. The crater lakes of Sete Cidades can be viewed from several different viewpoints, but it’s hard to beat this spot. If you have a drone, Lagoa do Canario by air reveals a really interesting shape.

For sunrise, we visit one of the most iconic locations in São Miguel, Vila Franca Islet. The islet is famous for its unique geological formation. It is essentially a volcanic crater that has partially collapsed and allowed seawater to enter, forming a natural circular pool inside the crater. To create really unique perspectives here, you need a bird’s eye view of a drone.

Next, we head out to Lagoa das Furnas, a spectacular crater lake where you will have the chance do photograph mud pools and other steaming geothermal features. We will try the famous local dish known as Cozido at das Furnas, which is unique to this town and is cooked by volcanic steam, as well as the sweet muffins called bolo lêvedo.

Terra Nostra Park is our next spot and considered one of the most beautiful gardens, with the added bonus of having thermal pools. Be sure to bring your swimwear, with temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, provides a sensation of rest and relaxation for the rest of the day.

In our list is Ribeira Quente waterfalls, the unique brown and orange colours from the rich iron waters makes this a must visit location in São Miguel.

In the afternoon we head back to the coastline of the island to photograph the sunset.

Welcome to Cristiano Ronaldo airport of Madeira Island. Our first destination is Eira do Serrado, a place with breathtaking views of the mountains, the valley and the picturesque village of Curral das Freiras, makes this a fantastic place to have a glimpse of the landscape.

In the afternoon we head out to one of the best sunset locations of Madeira Island, Pico do Areeiro. The ever-changing lighting conditions, combined with its breathtaking panoramic views and the rocky terrain make it a playground for landscape photographers.

The eight day starts at Ponta de São Lourenço coastline, the furthest eastern point of Madeira, with its unique geological formations, rugged cliffs, and vibrant colors provide fantastic opportunities for the sunrise.

Driving along the winding mountain roads we arrive at the old bridge in Faial, knowned for its cobblestone pillars and arch, surrounded by green vegetation, makes it a very interesting subject.

Next, we arrive at Aguage waterfall, a less known but also a beautiful location with so many possible compositions.

After lunch, explore the traditional houses of Santana also known as “casas de colmo”. Their distinctive design, colorful decorations, and historical significance make them an integral part of the unique cultural tapestry of Madeira Island. We’ll also visit the Queimadas Forest Park, another excellent place to observe the Laurissilva Forest’s characteristic biological richness.

Our last spot of the day is Pico Ruivo for a sunset at the old trees. The combination of the elevated vantage point, the landscape and the changing colors of the sky provides a breathtaking scene atmosphere.

We begin our day at Ribeira da Janela Islets for sunrise, a group of towering sea stacks formations that create a fantastic subject with Madeira’s rugged coastline in the background.

Next we head back to the picturesque village of Seixal, its stunning natural beauty and black sand beach, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the north coastline of Madeira. Learn how to capture the motion of the waves and experiment with long exposures in challenging lighting conditions.

Also on our list is Nossa Senhora de Fátima Chapel, situated on the top of a hill, this small temple, contrasts with its green surroundings. Its unusual typology catches the eye. On one side of the chapel, the majesty of the mountains covered by a dense forest mantle, on the other, the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean. The scenery is completed with the typical houses that sprinkle the slopes – especially the parish of São Vicente, which can be seen in its entirety here.

For lunch we stop at Porto Moniz, a place with volcanic natural swimming pools, ideal place to try out long exposure photography.

After a lunch at Porto Moniz, the enchanted forest of Fanal is our next destination. This is a place that offers a captivating canvas of mist-covered trees, lush vegetation, and the interplay of light and shadow. The unique atmosphere and ancient trees make it an excellent spot for capturing enchanting images.

We end our day exploring one of the most scenic spots in Madeira Island, the Lighthouse Ponta do Pargo, located on the westernmost tip of the island. The lighthouse stands on a cliff that offers a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged coastline.

Enjoy a final breakfast together, reminiscing about the incredible moments shared during the tour. Unfortunately, it’s time to say goodbye and fly home. Transfers to the airport are arranged based on the hour of your flight with no additional costs.

I hope you cherish all of these amazing memories and fantastic photographs from Madeira and the Azores.

Bruno Ázera

@brunoazera, photographer based in the azores.

Hi there! My name is Bruno Ázera and I’m a digital artist based in Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal. Being born and raised here, I have come to love creating photos and videos in the Azores. I specialize in creating Photography Tours and Workshops , while I also work with businesses that are connected to nature and the outdoors.

My first interest in photography was triggered when my mother gave me a wooden box with photographs taken by my great grandfather when I was young. I still keep it with me, it is a box of memories, history, and art. As a teenager, I also started with music – playing an electric bass – following in the footsteps of my family. The thrill of playing live with my band was amazing. Being surrounded by and being creative with music, led me to other forms of art. I think that it is all connected.

"Nevertheless, over the years I discovered that my real passion came from capturing moments in the outdoors when hiking, and no better place for this like the Azores."

@brunoazera -Lagoa do Fogo - São Miguel Island - Azores - Bruno Azera

When I started to show a greater interest in photography and wanted to acquire my own equipment, it was really expensive and I had to work hard to be able to bear these costs. It wasn’t easy, but I felt that this was the path I wanted to take. From a very early age, I started playing with Photoshop, even before thinking about photography, and the love for cinema has practically always existed – this was driving me to achieve what I wanted. From the first day I picked up a camera back in 2005 until today, things have completely changed. My workflow from capture to edit has evolved and I’m focusing more on video and creating digital products for my website. Growing your brand you need to be up to date with all the new technology that comes out and know what other artists are creating. I invest a lot of time and money in my skills.

I think photographers today aren’t just “normal photographers”, but digital artists. However, although I like to edit and use new technology, I have a line that I never cross when creating images. I don’t like to replace skies or the reality of a location, especially when it comes to sharing travel content of the Azores on social media. Very often we see photos produced and loaded with filters and tones that are not possible in those certain scenarios. Unfortunately, I feel that there is a trend for fast food photos. Don’t get me wrong, I love digital art! But I think that a photographer should never be afraid to mention the process of editing and how the image was changed/ modified.

@brunoazera - The Mountain viewed from São Jorge Island - Azores - Bruno Azera

"The fact that I live in the Azores has influenced my photography style."

The present green and rugged landscape in our daily lives, the dark blue colors from the ocean, and the bright yellows from the best light of the day, are a reflection of my photography work. My workflow has evolved and changed over the years but I’ve been a Lightroom and Photoshop user since I started. I’ve tried Capture One mainly for the colors, but in my opinion, especially with the new local adjustment tools, Lightroom is still the best out there. My editing starts in the blue channel of the Calibration and finishes in the HSL/Color module. These are by far the two main tools I use to create my style and look. Participants of my photo tours are usually blown away when showing these simple steps. Next, I jump to Photoshop to add perspective and depth to the image, using luminosity masks for dodging and burning or for creating more precise blending exposures when needed. More recently, I have added Luminar to my editing workflow. The AI understanding of a scene is incredible and really helps with final touches.

Being organized is key to being productive throughout the process. There is no right way, but try to find a method of work that fits your needs. One thing I can’t stress enough is backing up and cataloging all of your work. Unfortunately, I have learned this the hard way by losing several years of photos due to a power surge, destroying two of my main hard drives on my server.

My tours and photo guides available on my website are a reflection of what I consider important for landscape photographers that are thinking of visiting the Azores. They are the result of hard work that I am proud of having built during all this time being a local and living here in the Azores.

@brunoazera -Green Forest - Terceira Island - Azores - Bruno Azera

I think that what makes my workshops/tours unique – is me. That may sound a little uncommon to hear someone saying such a thing out loud about themselves, but in the end, it’s true for everyone. In my case, being a local photographer and having lived here all my life, I know the people, I know the customs and I know exactly what is interesting for others to see. Nothing is staged and I want the participants to have an experience as close as possible to what it’s like to live and be Azorean. An example of this was recently when the farewell lunch of one of my September photo tours was held at my parents’ house. Amazing experience!

My photo tours are above all, adventures and experiences where the best opportunities to photograph the Azores are created. I have spent countless hours scouting and photographing all the locations intensively, therefore choosing the best time of day to show it. We frequently fly from where I’m based to go to another island, but the ferry is the best option if you want to explore the triangle of the islands of Faial, Pico, and São Jorge because they are so close to each other. I also like to include post-processing and editing sessions on the go, where I teach and let people try.

"My photo tours are not touristy and that makes them unique as they are geared exclusively to photography."

I have a great time during all my tours, whatever island it is that I show. It is hard to choose one or even a few islands, considering most people cannot visit all. Each one has its charm. Of course, Terceira Island means home and comfort to me, it has a completely different vibe. My favorite photograph from the island is of Pico Dona Joana. For many years, I passed through this place and had no idea of the hidden beauty that was there. With the technology of drones, it is possible to discover different perspectives and places that were completely out of reach, especially the incredible seascape of the Azores viewed from the ocean.

"It's curious because photographers from different parts of the world are visiting Terceira island just to create this image."

@brunoazera - Pico Dona Joana - Terceira Island - Azores - Bruno Azera

However, if I had to recommend a place to visit when having a limited amount of time, it’s São Miguel. This island has a bit of everything, from amazing landscapes to gorgeous lagoons and hot springs. The island that impresses me more personally, is definitely Flores. An untouched landscape, surrounded by green endemic vegetation and breathtaking waterfalls everywhere you point the camera.

Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro - Flores Island - Azores - Bruno Azera

There is a lot to see and photograph on each island and the feel of nature and sense of peace takes over. Nevertheless, it is difficult to live in a place as isolated as the Azores and be successful just doing photo tours focusing on nature and adventures, especially since I don’t live on the biggest and most touristy island of the archipelago. So, my main job is running a bar/music venue owned by my family that we opened back in 1998 in my hometown and doing my best to be present on social media. One of the main strategies I’ve used was to always put the name or hashtag Azores on everything that I created and shared, but in reality, it always comes down to creating the best work possible.

@brunoazera -Lagoa da Serreta - Terceira Island - Azores - Bruno Azera

Recently, I have been focusing more on video and learning how to shoot and edit videos. I never thought that I could be hired for doing what I love, creating the nature and outdoor content of the Azores. It all started with personal projects, but I’ve been fortunate enough to have my work on big commercial ads for television. The industry has changed, and you have to adapt and evolve with it.

Doing your best and being your best, I have learned over the years, is the one and the only thing that will lead you toward your goals. There are many strategies you can apply to achieve success, but they will only work for you (in the long run) if they are driven by a sincere and authentic passion.

Love from the Azores!

Choose between a dip in relaxing waters and a visit to a gorgeous botanical garden. For the first choice, take a dip into the warm, mineral-enriched waters of the Terra Nostra pool. While you soak in the thermal spring waters, take in the gorgeous surrounding views of Terra Nostra Park and the Valley of Furnas. Savor the views in addition to appreciating the history; the pool was built in the 18th century by the American consul to the Azores. Your second choice is to embark on a guided visit to the organic paradise that is the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. From colorful flowers to palm trees, aquatic plants, bamboo, azaleas, and more, stroll through the garden alongside your guide to see what’s in bloom.

Choose between two museums today. For your first choice, visit the Horta Museum and see Baroque artwork as well as exhibitions of religious paintings that illustrate gold and silversmithing and ivory. Walk through spaces adorned with antique furniture and pianos from the 19th and 20th centuries. Your second choice is a visit to the Scrimshaw Museum, featuring engraved whalebones and teeth from sperm whales. The fascinating collection showcases works by the best scrimshaw artists on the Faial islands. Exhibitions preserve the history of whaling and spirit of adventure that is a core part of the Azores. Make your way through the history of whaling and the scrimshaw artistry at this lovely museum located in one of the most famous sailing Cafes in the world.

Extend your stay in Portugal with 3 nights in Lisbon – the country’s vibrant capital city. See the city like never before – zooming to the famous sights via tuk-tuk and tram! Enjoy ample free time to discover Lisbon’s hidden charms on your own. Take advantage of the city’s savory cuisine, lively energy, and colorful promenades.

  • Experience Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city where old traditions intermingle with modern twists. See the city on a lively tuk-tuk tour, zooming through the urban energy from the back seat of an open-air vehicle. Venture through the city's beloved neighborhoods. After becoming acquainted with the area, enjoy the rest of your day at leisure to explore on your own.
  • See the city from a different perspective - via tram! With a local guide, hop on and learn to navigate this widespread trolley system! Your guide will take you to Lisbon’s famous sights, including Jeronimo’s Monastery (UNESCO), the Monument to the Discoveries, and the Tower of Belem (UNESCO). Make the most of an afternoon to yourself, perhaps taking the historic tram to the vibrant Alfama district. Gather in the evening for dinner in a local restaurant, getting a taste of some of Portugal’s favorite flavors.
  • The day is yours! Take advantage of your day at leisure; maybe stroll along Praça do Comércio, or even make your way to the São Jorge Castle for a sprawling panorama of the city.
  • Wish Lisbon goodbye as you depart for home.

Taste your way through the unique, natural flavors of São Miguel. This afternoon, stop at a local gin production facility, where traditional botanical ingredients like rosemary and juniper are blended with local, sustainably sourced seaweed. Drinks and bottles of gin sold here support marine conservation locally, through a donation to the Ocean Azores Foundation. Enjoy a light, farmhouse-style lunch on the beautiful grounds of the facility. Cap off this afternoon excursion with a visit to a pineapple plantation that is more than 100 years old. You’ll see the plantation and where the pineapples grow before getting the chance to sip on an expertly prepared pineapple cocktail.

This morning, see what lies on the western side of Terceira Island. Take in the beautiful coastal views along the way before visiting a banana plantation, where bright green banana leaves and blue skies meet. After sipping on coffee and sampling some bananas or other seasonal fruits, you’ll visit a family-owned cheese factory. The family owns cows that roam freely with plenty of space and grass at a nearby farm, and many say the milk of these “happy cows” leads to a tastier cheese. After learning about the production process and the family history, gather for a light lunch of local products.

Indulge your taste buds and connect with Portuguese cuisine and culture at a home-hosted meal where local wines and petiscos, or Portuguese tapas, will be the start of a great night! Enjoy different wines, liquors and taste some of Portugal's and the Azores iconic foods. Portugal has been producing and exporting wine since the age of the ancient Romans – and it’s only gotten better with time! Relax at this local home and feel as if you are meeting an old friend!
