The solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, is going to be a big deal, expecting to draw anywhere from 1 to 4 million people to the path of totality for the event. The profound experience is not one to underestimate—AFAR contributor Jeff Greenwald describes the spectacle : “For some, it’s a scientific epiphany; for others, a spiritual catharsis. But nobody who’s seen one ever forgets the experience.”

With this year’s total solar eclipse being the last visible from the contiguous USA until August 2044, hotel rooms along the eclipse’s path in cities like San Antonio, Texas, and Niagara Falls are already filling up. But if you’re not one of the 31 million Americans living inside the path of totality, tour operators across the continent are offering customized experiences for those eager to see it.

Ready to go all out for the celestial event? Here are four tour operators that will plan your ultimate solar eclipse getaway.

(All listed prices are based on double occupancy.)

1. Intrepid’s 16-day tour of New Mexico and Texas

  • Dates : March 26, 2024 – April 10, 2024
  • Notable locations: Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico; Alpine, Fredericksburg, and San Antonio, Texas
  • Length: 16 days
  • Price : From $8,790 per person
  • Book now: USA Total Solar Eclipse 2024

If you want to spend a couple of weeks immersed in the natural skies and landscapes of New Mexico and Texas, consider this 16-day trip by Intrepid Travel . The adventure starts in Albuquerque, where visitors tour through New Mexico’s Museum of Natural History and Science (the museum’s planetarium will of course be a stop) and visit an astronomical radio observatory. Stops in Santa Fe, Alamogordo, and Las Cruces whisk travelers away from the big city to darker skies, including those of White Sands National Park.

The trip concludes in San Antonio, where you’ll be able to see the eclipse. For any space questions that inevitably arise: U.K.-based astronomy lecturer Dr. John Mason, who has more than 30 years of experience leading overseas expeditions to observe phenomena like annular and total solar eclipses, will accompany the tour the whole time.

2. Arkansas total solar eclipse tour by Sunrise Tours

  • Dates: April 6–10, 2024
  • Notable locations: Atlus, Hot Springs National Park, and Fort Smith, Arkansas
  • Length: 5 days
  • Price: From $1,389 per person

The 2024 eclipse’s path of totality includes part of the Ozarks, and Missouri-based Sunrise Tours offers the opportunity to learn about the region through its Total Solar Eclipse tour in Arkansas. The five-day trip includes a stop at Ozark Folk Center State Park , which spotlights Ozark artists by featuring a craft village full of pottery, copper jewelry, and other handmade goods. Tour participants will also get to take a dip in Hot Springs National Park.

The main event takes place by the Ozark Mountains in Atlus, Arkansas—with totality lasting about 3 minutes—followed by two days exploring Fort Smith, a town bordering Oklahoma that was a major military post during the country’s frontier era.

3. Holland America’s 22-Day Solar Eclipse Cruise

  • Dates: April 5–27, 2024
  • Notable locations: San Diego, California; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Honolulu, Hawai‘i; British Columbia, Canada
  • Length: 22 days
  • Price : From $1,499 per person
  • Book now: 22-Day Solar Eclipse & Circle Hawai’i

Areas along the path of totality are expected to get crowded come April 8—that is, if you’re on land. Holland America’s 22-day cruise offers the rare opportunity to witness a solar eclipse at sea, all while sailing waters near the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Departing from Cabo San Lucas, the 2,650-person Koningsdam cruise ship takes passengers off the coast of Mexico to see the solar eclipse. But that’s just day four. The itinerary packs in stops in Mexico and Hawai‘i before ending in British Columbia, where passengers disembark in Vancouver . Plus, guests will have the opportunity to attend special lectures by University of California San Diego astronomy and astrophysics professor Adam Burgasser to better understand the eclipse and create their own eclipse viewers (special eyewear that lets you directly view the sun without damaging your eyes).

Holland America is offering another 2024 solar eclipse cruise, a 14-day itinerary aboard the 1,432-passenger Zaandam that will take passengers round-trip from San Diego with eight stops in Mexico. The particular cruise is currently sold out, but cabins may become available later if there are cancellations.

4. Mexico’s Copper Canyon Total Solar Eclipse Tour from TravelQuest International

  • Dates: March 29 – April 9, 2024
  • Notable locations: Copper Canyon, Chihuahua, and Torreón, Coahuilan
  • Length: 12 days
  • Price: From $6,980 per person
  • Book now: Mexico’s Copper Canyon Total Solar Eclipse

This tour by TravelQuest International emphasizes the natural beauty found in northwestern Mexico, packing in an excursion to Mexico’s coast as well as time exploring Indigenous culture through small community visits. Unique to this journey is a six-hour scenic train ride on the Chepe Express from El Fuerté to Divisadero, among the forested peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental range.

When it comes to the April 8 eclipse, the trip has one of the best places to catch totality. Participants will watch the eclipse in the Torreón, an economic hub in the Mexican state of Coahuilan, where there will be an estimated 4 minutes and 4 seconds of totality during eclipse time—due to the glorious fact that the viewing point is less than 50 miles from the point of greatest eclipse near Nazas.

"The Great [North] American Eclipse" Part 2

please send us an email ( [email protected] ). Additional accommodations have now been secured --- reservations are again being accepted!!

On Monday, April 8th, 2024, the next installment of "The Great American Eclipse" — the northern version — will take place — following a path from southwestern Texas, across the Midwestern U.S., through the northeast, and on into Quebec, Canada...

Join Twilight Tours, as we again take up the pursuit of the lunar umbra, or shadow, as it makes its way amidst the arid plains of southwest Texas.

This will be our 17th tour to observe and capture the most incomparable sight in amateur astronomy — a total eclipse of our sun.

Hotel Valencia Riverwalk , conveniently located in San Antonio's bustling tourist center. --> Our accommodations are at Omni La Mansion del Rio , conveniently located in San Antonio's bustling tourist center.

A specially selected observing site — using permanent premises with bathrooms, rooms for relief from the heat, a well-developed observing area — with onsite security provided for equipment set up the day prior to the eclipse, and complimentary cold refreshments and snacks on eclipse day — has been secured. Our site will see some 4 minutes, 17 seconds of glorious totality, with the sun situated some 68° above the horizon.

Weather prospects, similar to the "Great American Eclipse" of August 21, 2017, are projected to be some of the most favorable across the initial portion of the eclipse track — which includes our site located in southwest Texas.

The tour cost includes: 3 nights' accommodation, daily breakfast during the tour, transportation to/from our reserved observing site (located < 20 miles from the eclipse centerline), a celebration banquet following the eclipse event, and Twilight Tours' expert logistical/technical guidance and support that have been a hallmark of our trips for 37 years.

Space is limited on this tour and is expected to fill quickly, so submit your registration form without delay.

Exceeded expectations

Excellent planning and logistics. Extremely helpful and informative guides. Comfortable and spacious luxury transport with 'bigger' buses throughout enabling us to all 'spread out'. Excellent hotels and an amazing variety of sights and historical monuments and ruins were packed in to ensure that none of the main highlights that Mexico is renowned for were missed. Exceeded expectations and it will be our first choice for future trips.

Logistics were weak until the local…

Logistics were weak until the local tour director took over. The itinerary didn't have meeting times or enough detail to prepare for a day until Esther, the local tour director heard complaints and created a more detailed itinerary. Transfers to and from the hotel weren't provided. Local guides in Houston and San Antonio seemed rusty and were often hard to hear. This tour wasn't up to the standards I'm used to when traveling, and I will search for another provider for future eclipse tours.

4 1/2 minutes of totality in Mexico!

This was our second totality experience with Eclipse Traveler, and again, this exceeded our expectations by far! Very well run, with excellent hotels and meals, and the Astronomy guides and fellow astronomy nerds made it unforgettable. There is a lot of uncertainties that have to be managed right up until the last minute with these kinds of tours, and felt we were very well taken care of. Would definitely recommend! Looking forward to our next trip with them!

Need end of tour day day timing to make Dinner Plans

One thing that the tour company could have done a much better job of is having a time for each day when we would be back at the hotel, so that we can make Dinner Reservations far enough in advance....at least 1 week before we were to arrive. A second thing was that the Astronomy Guest Speaker should have been scheduled immediately upon our return to the hotel. Instead there was an hour and a half wait and hence too little time to go out to Dinner before the talk and too late at night for dinner after the talk. On the plus side, our Eclipse Hostess Esther was very delightful with a good sense of humor and the Hotels we stayed at were very nice.

A Company Run by the Seat of Its Pants

The fact that I received this email addressed to "Mexico Eclipse Travelers" is typical of the way this tour company works. I did NOT go to Mexico, but to Texas. Throughout the tour, everything was just a bit - or a lot - off, from the opening night, in which the presenter seemed to not know that this was the computer age and one could use slides to back up the info being shared, or continuing on a tour where it seemed as if it was almost being planned as we traveled. I have traveled to more than 100 countries over 30 years, and this was the least professional group I have ever traveled with.

not worth what we paid

We arrived late due to storm preventing plane to land. And so we Ubered to the Space Center to catch with the tour, but the tour was very short and everyone went back to the hotel to spend the afternoon on their own. We didn't get our breakfast voucher for the three days at the first hotel. Even when we asked about it, she didn't know anything about it. Then we asked the hotel, they didn't know either. So we had to buy our own breakfast for the first three days. Had one hour at the Space center, next day is on our own day, third day is travel day to another hotel. Tour of other places are disappointing, some just quick drove by. They gave us lot of time shopping. The eclipse day(last day) is ok, dinner was good. BTW, that's the only dinner provided.

Not using this company in the future

We were in the Texas version of the trip. There were many issues that made this a suboptimal experience. The initial presentation by the ET president was difficult to understand due to a combination of poor PA system, bad acoustics, and the presenter's accent. This could have been amended with a simple PowerPoint presentation, but he did not bother. He then left the next day for Mexico leaving us with local guides. There were no ET personnel with us for the rest of the trip. All we had were local guides and the bus drivers. The only meal included every day was breakfast. Lunch and dinner were only included on the day of the eclipse. For the rest of the trip, it was our responsibility to find a place to eat lunch and dinner and to pay for the meals. The initial itineraries had no times on them and the guides seemed at a loss themselves as to exactly when events were supposed to occur. The first itinerary only stated for the day of the eclipse that we were getting up "very early." How early? Apparently that was going to be a surprise. Several days went by before we got an itinerary with specific times. While in Houston, we were advised to spend the entire day visiting the Galleria Mall which was in the same building complex as the hotel. This did not merit as a very special or interesting activity. The next day was advertised as "a day at Houston Space Center" which was to include a presentation from an astronomer. There was no such presentation and the "day" consisted of three hours. There were no other activities for the remainder of the day. There were few guided tours. Mostly we were dropped off at locations and told when to get back to the bus. There were some odd stops including a bar on the way to the eclipse site and another day a stop at a shoe store. Neither were on the itinerary, nor was any explanation given why we would want to stop at these places. A group photograph was taken on April 8. I have made several requests for ET to send it to me. Instead, they sent me the group picture for the Mexico trip. As of this post on May 21, they still haven't sent me the picture. I had to track it down myself from another customer. There's more, but I think that's enough. We are not going to use ET in the future. Dan and Margy

The trip was OK

The trip was OK, but almost every item on the itinerary was changed without prior notice. For example, cities visited were changed; no trip was made to the penguin island. Also, the trip was expected to be a small group, but had over 100 people. Finally, an inordinate amount of time was spent on the bus. I didn't rate it worse because there were explanations for all of this. The season made the water around the island choppy. More people signed up than expected. The trip did not live up to expectations because of these unexpected changes.

Reply from Eclipse Traveler

Hi Maureen, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It is very valuable to have this feedback to make our tours a better experience for future travelers. As you have mentioned, we had to make changes in the itinerary in order to provide the best eclipse viewing experience for our travelers. We plan these trips 3-4 years in advance and as the day of the eclipse approaches, we have to check the weather conditions and other logistics to make sure we have the best spot. Therefore the changes in the itineraries are inevitable and it is clearly explained in our terms and conditions that we have a right to make changes as necessary. This year we had clear skies and a great eclipse view thanks to the hard work of our astronomers to make the predictions. The Hubolt Island visit which was in the original itinerary was an option to La Silla Observatory visit. It clearly stated in the itinerary that we would visit the Hubolt Island OR La Silla Observatory on that day based on the weather conditions. Because the seas were high, we opted for the La Silla Observatory visit. I am sorry that you are disappointed, but i want to clarify that the island visit was one of the two options in the itinerary. Again, thank you for sharing your experience with us. We will make sure to provide a better service to our future travelers based on your feedback. Kind Regards, Shebby

This was an incredible tour experience

This was an incredible tour experience, incredible eclipse. The logistics they did to make this an unforgettable experience for us is truly amazing. I loved our tour guides, and was so impressed by the quality of the hotels as well. I cannot wait for out next trip with this company - we had already booked for the Argentina tour next eclipse and I am so looking forward to it. It is really comforting to know we are in such good hands.

This was the best trip by far

This was the best trip by far. It was a total solar eclipse , so we could see all the phases. We were given eclipse glasses, a pinhole viewer, and a solar filter for a telescope . The eclipse lasted for about half an hour.We had an amazing weather for the eclipse, and it was best experience of my life.

Date of experience : May 12, 2022

Awe inspiring eclipse

Summary: An excellent tour. 5 stars. Positives: I can not imagine a better experience on Eclipse Day, July 2, 2019. The site and weather were perfect. The trip to La Silla Observatory was also fantastic - both the scenery along the way and the time on the mountain. Food was plentiful and good, especially the delicious seafood. Hotels were great. Local guides were great. Astronomers were fantastic. I especially benefited from discussions with Laura Danly from the Griffith Observatory. I really enjoyed my interactions with many of the 140 interesting people on the tour. Negatives: One day was an excursion to a Pisco factory in Elqui Valley including a stop at Gabriela Mistral's home. There was too much bus travel that day for my taste. I would have preferred some time along the way to hike around the hills and take some photos. Conclusion: The trip was wonderful, well worth my while. I would travel with this company again.

Another amazing trip !

Another excellent total solar Eclipse Trip with Eclipse Traveler. This was my third total solar eclipse with them. We had astronomers with us during the entire trip. Not only did we get to see a spectacular total solar eclipse in the Atcama desert with a big white tent filled with tables and chairs. We were treated to appetizers, multiple meals with fabulous food, desserts, wine and champagne to celebrate. I was completely surprised when we walked to a nearby restaurant and had a wonderful sit down lunch of multiple courses. It was a first class event in the Atcama desert!! Throughout the trip when he had lectures and went out at night to view the southern hemisphere sky with the astronomers. We got to go to the Silla and ALMA observatories. We also had a wonderful tour through Chile( Santiago, La Serena, Valparisio, San Pedro de Atcama , Santa Rita winery ) and Easter island. Easter island history of the Moai & Birdman cultures was fascinating. I could not believe the size of the Moai. Easter island is beautiful with all of its volcanoes and Rapa Nui people!

Date of experience : July 27, 2019

Thank you for the great feedback! Hope to see in Antarctica in 2021!

Too big to handle well

This tour was way beyond ET's logistical capacity, with way too many people for them to handle. The Eclipse site was great (with bathrooms for the first time, apparently). But everything else on the itinerary was changed continuously. Some "included" items were now extra. They left late and arrived late, causing dinners as late as 8:45 PM, followed by an early morning launch. Multiple times the buses had busted toilets and desperate riders. The day trip to Valparaiso was a long bus ride through town, lunch (nice!) and visit to a poet's house, then back, not much there. The Elqui Valley visit started so late, some missed the Pisco factory tour and others got back very very late. General disorganization many days. Once the bulk of the group left after 6 days, things went much smoother. The hotels and food were great - chops for that. If ET sticks to smaller groups they should be fine. (PS, even the staff got stressed out trying to handle the mob of guests.)

Fantastic Experience!

This was a wonderful trip!! In addition to seeing an amazing total solar eclipse, we experienced other fascinating areas of Chile, including the Atacama Desert and Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The accommodations were excellent!! I feel very fortunate to have traveled with this company and plan to travel with them again!! Thank you so much, Eclipse Traveler!!

Date of experience : July 18, 2019

Clear eclipse but logistical problems

The venue for the actual eclipse was great and we had a very clear day! Although it was not on the exact central line (about 40 seconds off), we did see totality. The logistics for the trip kept changing, including the eclipse site, hotels, flights and tours. The tour company did not help at all with transfers in Santiago. As a single, older adult, I had a great deal of problems. The airport was chaotic given that Santiago received 800,000 more visitors than usual. That is likely to happen for the next eclipse. ET personnel did not monitor our group in airports or give clear directions for how to go through customs, find gates etc.. The tour company focused on the eclipse and had 3 astronomers with the tour but their time was unevenly split between 4 bus loads of passengers. I won't travel to Chile again or to another eclipse with this company. I would discourage singles, esp. adults older than 60 to travel to Chile or with this company. But I did see a total eclipse, Silla Observatory and Easter Island (Rapa Nui) so am satisfied!!.

Date of experience : August 19, 2019

Hi Christine, I am sorry to hear that you had had some problems for the transfers in Santiago and at the airport. We do offer private airport transfers for passengers who sign up for it and we offer complementary airport transfers for passengers who book our group flight. For individual flights, arrival-departure times vary and we cannot provide private transfer services without charging the extra cost. We did provide check-in assistance for all group flights during the tour. Only time we did not provide assistance at the airport is the initial arrival and final departure of the passengers who booked their flights on their own since there are multiple flights and schedules and it is out of the group travel plans. I am glad to her that you had enjoyed viewing the total eclipse which was the highlight of this tour. Yes, we had to make changes on the logistics in order to provide the best viewing experience to our travelers. Many other companies missed the total eclipse or saw a partial eclipse, but thanks to our expert astronomers we had the best location. Chile has a lot to offer, but it has high altitudes that may not be suitable for some travelers especially the ones with health problems. Most of our tours include lite-moderate activities which are suitable for most travelers from various age groups with an active lifestyle. We hope to host you on our future tours and we certainly can arrange private services for you at the airports to make it an easier experience. Kind Regards, Shebby

This was a fantastic trip

This was a fantastic trip. My only regret is that there were so many people. We had four busses of travelers.

Hi Allison, Thank you for the great review and feedback. We take your recommendations to make the group size smaller for our 2020 and future tours. We will follow different itineraries with smaller groups from now on. I hope you can join us again! Shebby

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: what is the best time to book a moscow hop-on hop-off tour.

March to May is the best time to plan a visit to Moscow. The days are long with significant sunshine which makes this time ideal for exploring the city. January is the coldest month so make sure to avoid it if you have a low tolerance for chilly weather. However, you will be able to score some good deals on airfare and accommodation during this time.

Q: How does it work?

Moscow bus tour offers you the convenience and flexibility to get off at the nearest designated stop. No tour guide, you set your own itinerary. You’ll find all the stops are located strategically at all the major attractions, making your touring as hassle-free as possible. And then, when you’re ready to continue, return to a designated bus stop, show your pass, and hop back on the bus and onwards towards your next attraction. So, go ahead and make a whole loop of the route once you have your tour ticket, get familiar with the city and pick out your favorite places to visit and then return to them during your stay.

Q: How many days are enough to explore Moscow?

We recommend at least two to three days to explore Moscow at a relaxed pace and cover most of its prominent attractions while enjoying shopping and local cuisine.

Q: What is the validity of the ticket?

There are several ticket options available to you, depending on your length of stay. Each bus tour will have validity from 24, 36, 48 to 72 hours. And the great thing is you can plan ahead as the vouchers are valid anywhere between 6 months to 1 year and can be used at any point during that period. Check the product page or bus tour operator for complete details.

Q: Where can I find a list of all the stops and a map of the various Moscow hop-on hop-off tour routes?

The Morning

Patriotism, diversity and the election.

We explore the battle for Senate control.

An image of a man walking among several American flags.

By David Leonhardt

Climate change. Student debt. Diversity, equity and inclusion. The war in Gaza.

These topics are central to progressive politics today. They are the subject of campus protests and online debates. They are also almost completely absent from the campaigns of Democratic Senate candidates trying to win tough races this year.

In yesterday’s newsletter , I noted that Democratic candidates are leading the polls in six states where President Biden is trailing — and that all six have based their campaigns around populist themes of defending ordinary citizens against the powerful. Today, I’ll look at some other campaign themes.

One is the contrast between the country’s most heated political debates and the top concerns of most voters. Those heated debates are shaped by policy experts, campaign donors and political activists, all of whom tend to be highly educated and relatively affluent. The full electorate often has different priorities.

Student debt and housing costs make for a useful comparison. Student debt, a subject that the Biden administration has emphasized, may seem like the ultimate pocketbook issue. In reality, it’s more niche: Only 18 percent of U.S. adults have any federal student debt.

That helps explain why, in a recent Harvard University survey of U.S. residents between 18 and 29 years old, student debt ranked dead last when the pollsters asked respondents which of 16 issues mattered to them. Israel and Palestine ranked 15th of 16. Climate change was 12th — and, again, this was a poll of voters under 30 . The top three issues were inflation, health care and housing.

No wonder that student debt is largely missing from these Democratic campaigns, while housing — a cost almost every family faces — is a focus. Senator Jacky Rosen, who’s running for re-election in Nevada, has devoted an entire ad to housing costs. Senator Jon Tester’s campaign lists the “housing crisis” as one of Montana’s biggest problems.

A clarifying point about American politics is that people who follow it closely are very different from swing voters. With that in mind, I offer four other themes from the Senate campaigns:

1. Bipartisanship

As polarized as the country is, many voters still hunger for bipartisanship. In their ads, the six Democrats generally treat Republicans with respect and celebrate collaboration.

Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio boasts about working with Republicans to pass a semiconductor law. Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin shows videos of Donald Trump and Biden in one ad, and a narrator explains that she worked with both to crack down on Chinese imports. Rosen brags of being “named one of the most bipartisan senators.”

The issue on which the Democrats try hardest to distance themselves from their own party is immigration, which polls show is a major Biden weakness . Rosen tells voters that she “ stood up to my own party to support police officers and get more funding for border security.” A Tester ad says that he “fought to stop President Biden from letting migrants stay in America instead of remain in Mexico.”

2. Abortion

Abortion is the opposite. It’s the issue on which the Republican Party is out of step with public opinion — and Democrats are on the offensive.

Rosen describes her likely Nevada opponent, Sam Brown, as “another MAGA extremist trying to take away abortion rights.” Tester, when listing the ways he fights for Montanans, says, “We’ve got folks who want to take away women’s right to choose.”

That said, abortion remains a secondary issue in most of these campaigns.

3. Patriotism

“Growing up poor, the only thing I really had was the American dream,” Ruben Gallego, an Arizona congressman running for Senate, says in the opening line of an ad . “It’s the one thing that we give every American no matter where they are born in life.”

That sentiment is typical of the six campaigns’ unabashed patriotism. Gallego highlights his Marine service in Iraq. Veterans’ health care is a theme of a few campaigns. An ad for Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania that is focused on steel includes the line “Take that, China.”

4. Diversity, subtly

The candidates’ ads portray a diverse America. When Rosen talks about housing, she shows a racially mixed group of young couples. A Brown campaign ad about the Ohio steel industry stars both Black and white workers. In a Baldwin ad , a Wisconsin businesswoman with a European accent praises the senator for fighting against federal rules about cheese making. Gallego talks about his mother’s struggles as an immigrant.

But the campaigns treat diversity as a natural part of American life, rather than as a political project. They emphasize the commonalities of Americans with different backgrounds. It’s a different approach from an identity politics that centers race.

Gallego has even achieved some notoriety for mocking the term Latinx. It disrespects the Spanish language, he has said, and is “largely used to satisfy white liberals.” He barred his congressional office from using the term.

It reminds me of a point that Steve Bannon, the far-right political strategist, has made: When American politics focus on race, Republicans — like Bannon and Trump — tend to benefit.

The flip side is that when campaigns focus on economic class, Democrats have the chance to benefit. You can see that lesson in these six populist campaigns.
