Maná announces 2023 US tour dates, teases new album: 'We're planning way ahead' (exclusive)

mana band tour 2023

  • Mexican rock band Maná announced they will be performing in the U.S. in 2023 as part of their México Lindo y Querido tour.
  • The band will play two dates in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum.
  • Maná drummer Alex González told USA TODAY fans can expect a new studio album from the band as well.
  • "We're planning way ahead," he said. "We're just so excited to be able to do what we love."

For  Maná , it's never too early to plan ahead. The Grammy Award-winning Mexican rock band is ending 2022 on a high note with big plans for 2023.

After nearly four decades of hits – including "Rayando el Sol," "Oye Mi Amor," "Mariposa Traicionera," "Labios Compartidos" and "Bendita Tu Luz" – the band, composed of lead vocalist Fher Olvera, 62, drummer Alex González, 53, guitarist Sergio Vallín, 50, and bass player Juan Calleros, 60, has no plans to stop performing.

USA TODAY can exclusively reveal Maná is embarking on a new North American leg of their México Lindo Y Querido tour. "Next year looks amazing and we can't wait to be back on the road,"   González says. "We haven't toured the U.S." since just before the COVID-19 shutdown.

The 19-date U.S. tour kicks off Feb. 10 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, a return to the venue where  Maná played the city's first-ever arena residency last spring  with 12 sold-out shows.

The band will play two nights in major cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami and Chicago and will conclude the tour Sept. 23 in Sacramento, California. (For a full list of tour dates go here .)

'Our second home': Maná announces residency at The Forum in Los Angeles in 2021

Now, Maná is "bringing a little piece of México" with their new tour. "We have put very high the name of México and Guadalajara … representing our land and where we were born, and while there's health – there will be Maná for many years to come," González adds. "Si Dios quiere (God willing)."

Since its 1986 start, the band has released 11 albums, including their 1992 album "¿Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?" which became the best selling Spanish-language rock album of all time. In 2019, Maná began re-recording some of their greatest hits with Latin music acts including Christian Nodal ("Te Llore Un Rio"), Sebastián Yatra ("No Ha Parado de Llover"), Joy Huerta ("Eres Mi Religion") and Alejandro Fernández ("Mariposa Traicionera").

But there hasn't been new music for fans since 2015.

González teases the wait may almost be over. "We’re going to be working on demos for a new studio album next year," he says. "The idea is to record at the end of 2023 and to be able to release the album in 2024."

"We're planning way ahead. … We're just so excited to be able to do what we love."

Maná after receiving Latin Grammy honor in 2018:  'We vow to fight for immigrants, women's rights '

Known for their evocative lyricism and high-energy shows ("Our concerts are a big party," says González), Maná places a premium on highlighting environmental, social, political and human rights issues.

In 2018, when they became the first group to receive the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year award, they used their acceptance speech to promote a message of unity and justice during Donald Trump's presidency . "We will continue fighting for the rights of the immigrants who have made this country great in the last century," Olvera said at the time.

González says that's just "part of our philosophy and who we are as people."

He says the band learned from the best: The Beatles , The Police , U2 , Bob Marley ,  Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen . "We grew up listening to amazing artists and musicians … using their platform to talk about things we’re worried about," he says. "At the end of the day, yeah, we play in a famous band but we’re also human beings and we all live on the same planet Earth."

Most recently, Maná partnered with Dr. Anthony Fauci in support of President Joe Biden's Month of Action to encourage vaccination among the Latino population in the U.S.

Ranchera royalty Ángela Aguilar follows 'in the footsteps of my dad' Pepe, but could also be its future

"A lot of people suffered because of the pandemic, millions of lives were lost," González says. "But we will remember them and celebrate them."

That love and respect for their fanbase is why the band continues to reach younger generations.

"People come to our shows to have a good time, it's an experience," he says, "and it's great to see how people have also passed our music from generation to generation. It's been a wild ride."

Considered the most influential Latin rock band in the world, MANÁ continues to transcend generations with their music. MANÁ - meaning positive energy in Polynesian - began in 1986 when four friends from Guadalajara, Mexico came together to fuse new rock sounds with Latin and Caribbean rhythms.

The group includes Fher Olvera as vocalist, guitarist and main composer, Alex González on drums, Sergio Vallín on lead guitar, and Juan Diego Calleros on bass. The group released their first album, Falta Amor in 1990. In 1992, they released ¿Dónde Jugarán los Niños? which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling Spanish-language rock album of all time.

MANÁ is one of the highest selling Latin touring acts of all time. From their first show in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palace in 1993 to their ongoing, historic residency at the Kia Forum on the Rayando El Sol Tour, MANÁ has established themselves as a powerhouse in the city. Their residency has sold over 165,000 tickets to date across 12 sold-out shows.

MANÁ has sold millions of albums around the world and has released 11 albums of original songs along with several live albums and compilations. MANÁ's many accolades additionally include their handprints on the Hollywood Rockwalk and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making them the first Spanish-language rock band to receive that honor.

Their influence also spans beyond music. For 30 years, the Selva Negra Ecological Foundation has been the social arm of MANÁ, combining conservation and environmental rescue with social development. Throughout their career, the band has been a vocal advocate for issues impacting their fans around the globe. Most recently the band joined forces with Dr. Anthony Fauci in support of President Joe Biden's Month of Action to encourage vaccination among the US Latino population.

MANÁ has 133 Certified Gold Albums, 256 Certified Platinum albums, 4 GRAMMY Awards, 9 Latin GRAMMY Awards, 26 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 15 Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, and honors such as the 2018 Latin Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award & 2018 Latin Grammy Person of the Year Award and more recently the 2021 ICONO LATIN BILLBOARD Award.

Their current collaboration project, which began in 2019, revisits some of their greatest songs, accompanied by renowned and diverse artists.

The most recent release -"Te Llore Un Rio," featuring Christian Nodal (pop and maricheño), has been one of their most successful releases of their current duet project so far, trending in over 15 countries across North America and Latin America at the time of release. Spanish singer Pablo Alborán joined them in 2019 with "Rayando el Sol", Sebastian Yatra in "No Ha Parado de Llover,'' Joy Huerta in "Eres Mi Religion", "El Reloj Cucú" with 12-year-old Mabel, and "Mariposa Traicionera" with Regional Mexican superstar Alejandro Fernandez.

"With a prolific career that spans over three decades, Maná have built themselves a reputation as one of the world’s most important Latin pop/rock bands. Just look no further than their chart-topping success — which includes ten No. 1s on Hot Latin Songs and eight No. 1s on Top Latin Albums. They’ve earned 19 total Billboard Latin Music Awards; and in 2018, the quartet became the Latin Recording Academy’s Person(s) of the Year, the first band to earn that recognition"

Hailed as Mexico's answer to U2, Maná are a hugely successful rock act who have achieved countless awards and accolades, including four Grammy Awards and seven Latin Grammy Awards, making them one of the most successful Spanish-speaking rock acts.

Formed in Guadalajara, Mexico, the band came together in 1986, featuring the talents of Fher Olvero (vocals), Ulises Calleros (guitars), Juan Diego Calleros (bass) and Alex González (drums). Despite initially signing with Polygram Records, the band soon moved to Warner Music, citing creative differences prompting the move.

Their debut album, "Falta Amor," arrived in 1992, initially slow to find success until the single, "Rayando el Sol" became a hit the following year. After the release, lineup changes saw Ulises replaced by keyboardist Iván González and guitarist Cesar Lopez, before then embarking on their second effort. In 1994, "Donde Jugaran Los Niños" was unleashed, becoming a seminal record that brought Maná superstardom in the Latin-rock world. Spawning several hits, the album went on to sell over 3 million copies, prompting an international tour.

Their third effort, "En Vivo," captured the band's live energies in 1995, featuring their new guitarist, Sergio Vallin, replacing Lopez. Folowing the album "Sueños Liquidos" in 1997, Maná became global stars outside of the Spanish-speaking world, receiving airplay on MTV, as well as featuring in their "Unplugged" series in 1999.

Success could only continue for Maná, whose 2002 "Revolución de Amor" earned them a Grammy Award for 'Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.' Their sixth studio effort, "Amar Es Combatir" went on to become the highest charting debut of a Spanish-language album on the Billboard 200 in 2007, as well as earning them another Grammy Award. It was five years before new Maná releases arrived, in the form of "Drama y Luz" in 2011, which again stormed the Billboard 200, reaching number five. Two years later, "En Toda Libertad" was released, continuing to find commercial success.

Live reviews

Multicolored strobe lights flash, the band members walk onto the smoky stage, and as the opening chords to “Rayando El Sol” begin, the audience belt out the lyrics before Fher Olvera gets the chance. Mana brings a bright, manic, infectious positive energy to the stage, and the crowd is immediately affected. Everyone is smiling, singing, and having a good time when Mana comes in concert. Just when you think it can't get any better, Alex Gonzalez smashes out an epic drum solo and the night is made.

Mana are arguably the most successful Latin rock band in the world, having won seven Latin Grammy Awards, four Grammy Awards, fourteen Billboard Latin Music Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards. Their track record itself is a demonstration of their success. They have also set records in both concert attendance and record sales, and if you listen to their music, it's not hard to see why. They produce excellent music on every one of the albums they have recorded, from Falta Amor, released in 1990, to En Toda Libertad in 2013. Their music has roots in Latin pop, pop rock, ska, and reggae.

Whether you're in the front row high fiving the band members or in the farthest seats from the stage, Mana are a must see. They pick epic song sets, using a range from their classics to their new songs and everything in between. Not only do they have awesome songs, but they bring the audience in and make them a part of the show too. If you want to listen to hours of great music and have an incredible night, go see a Mana concert.

Fher Olvera, Alex González, Sergio Vallín and Juan Calleros otherwise known as Mana are one of Mexico's most adored rock bands and their live show is equally adored by their loyal fan base. Often billed as Mexico's answer to U2, this veteran live act really knows how to put on a show for their crowds. Despite having formed almost 30 years ago, Fher and co step onto stage with the confident demeanour of a rock band half their age and enjoy the rapturous applause received by the audience.

Kicking off proceedings with an anthemic rendition of 'Oye mi amor' the crowd sing, dance and jump along in time with the latino rockers. Olvera whips them into frenzy and encourages them to rock out further to the likes of 'El dragón' which evokes massive cheers. Having scored numerous hits on both the US albums and singles chart, the audience know the band's discography well and remain engaged and enthusiastic throughout the show. They clap along during each band member's personal instrumental solo as they showcase their talents as musicians. Mana leaves the stage knowing they have successfully brought a rock party.

Mana is a hugely successful and popular Mexican rock band that have won countless awards including four of the heavily coveted Grammy awards and an incredible seven Latin Grammy awards. The band is one of the most successful Spanish speaking rock bands of all time, and certainly of modern times. Their concert hall was absolutely packed out with devoted fans, some of whom were so emotional and excited to see their heroes that they were close to tears. And there was more than a few people screaming hysterically, and this before the band had even emerged on stage! Mana have often been compared to U2, as the Spanish speaking equivalent. Judging by their live show, I could see why. Despite their ages, the band stepped on to stage looking and acting like young rock gods. They put on one hell of a show, a performance that was accompanied with flashing lights and strobes that really added to the atmosphere of the venue. The band played all their biggest hits, they had enough to play only their well known songs, which had the whole crowd screaming along.

sabraziz’s profile image

The music was great. Expect for the remake of an already great song.

It was funny to see how most of the crowd wasn't into the remake. Sad that the band doesn't care about what the fans think.

It was also disappointing that the band had a political agenda. We all came to see a show, listen to some great music. But they couldn't just let that be.

Needles to say I will not be attending another MANA concert

matil-wyman’s profile image

Great concert...!The band is amazing live, they have great energy and interact with the crowd. By balancing their new stuff with their old stuff, they kept both new fans and old fans happy with the repertoire of the event, and make it even more intimate with the audience by performing acoustic. If you’ve never heard of Maná do it now! PS.I would love to see it again...

Karla65849’s profile image

The concert was awesome, they are very interactive with the crowd. They had 3 different stages along the floor and played at all of them so that if you spent some good money to sit on floor you got your money's worth because they hit all the spots. Will definitely be going again, probably one of the better concerts that I've ever been to.

unfortunately we did not make it to the show. We drove 418 miles half way to Vegas our car broke down. We had to tow and get it fixed didn't make to to Vegas until 11.30pm. By that time Im sure the show was over....so wasted over $300 on a show we did not get to see. So upset about it.....

kuzzuka’s profile image

Mana had an energetic show with great sound. I had seats in the last row but could still see everything. They also had two stages set up which was a fantastic idea to allow more people to see them up close.

Convenient venue with easy parking or easy walking distance from several hotels.

ReNash’s profile image

Excelent show even with Fher losing his voice. People attending saved the concert singing all sings and helping Fher. Only one thing: they should stick to schedule. It is not respectful to have people waiting for more than one hour. No excuses on that

william-vallejo’s profile image

Saw them in Oct 2015 in CDMX. It was incredible! The drummer did an epic 12 min set and a couple proposed and danced onstage to Bendida la Luz. Not a dry eye in the house. Thry soumd great! I think I was the only non latino, but I was rocking out!

Maná

It was night two for Maná in Chicago at the United Center on Saturday (April 29), but it was the 12th show overall for the Mexican rock band who’s been on the road with their México Lindo Y Querido Tour in the United States since March.

Trending on Billboard

Maná’s ‘revolución de amor’ turns 20: all the songs on the album, ranked….

As ever, Maná’s concerts are the type where you know you’re going to get hit with the classics, which means you’ll be on your feet and singing at the top of your lungs over the course of two hours, the duration of the group’s set. This concert was no exception. The show featured a stacked setlist including hits from albums released over the span of three decades, such as ¿Dónde Jugarán Los Niños? , Cuando Los Ángeles Lloran , Sueños Líquidos and Revolución de Amor.

The songs that were part of the setlist included “Cómo Te Deseo,” “De Pies a Cabeza,” “Labios Compartidos,” “Vivir Sin Aire,” “Eres Mi Religión,” “Mariposa Traicionera,” “En El Muelle de San Blas,” “Me Vale” and “Clavado En Un Bar,” to name a few.

A testament to their timeless rock-en-Español anthems and performance prowess, Maná kicked off their trek in March, just months after an unprecedented sold-out residency at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles last year. “The main thing is our shows are a big party and a celebration of life,” González previously told Billboard Español. “We are excited to continue that celebration and share it with more people across the United States.” Olvera added, “We don’t take this for granted. The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

mana band tour 2023

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

mana band tour 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

mana band tour 2023

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

mana band tour 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

mana band tour 2023

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

mana band tour 2023

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

It’s not a scene you might expect at your typical music festival — but this was not your typical music festival.

Festival La Onda — run by Latitude 38 Entertainment, the same company that puts on the annual BottleRock Napa Valley — is said to be the only major multi-day festival in Northern California to focus exclusively on Latin music. It’s marking its inaugural run this weekend on the same Napa Valley Expo grounds that hosted last weekend’s BottleRock . And after a day full of delightful musical offerings and a vibe steeped in Latin pride on Saturday, it had patrons begging for the festival to return.

“It’s like my roots,” said Eduardo Matus, a Mexico City native who has been in the U.S. for 12 years. “It’s always nice to enjoy your culture even when you’re not at home… It’s special for me.”

All day, crowds hustled past giant Loteria cards and gleaming low-riders to enjoy the festival’s offerings. While the crowd of 30,000 was largely youthful, dozens of families — from abuelitas to infants in arms and kids in strollers — came to take part in the festivities and made up a mellow, friendly throng.

Robert Grey came from Sacramento with his wife and sister to take his daughter and nephew to their first concert. He bounced up and down to the beats of the Mexican reggaetonero Yng Lvcas with his 3-year-old on his hip. “We want to bring our kids and have a good time,” he said, noting that sharing this music served as a way to pass the torch. “We have to keep it going, for the culture.”

The musical selection offered a diverse slate of genres and artists from pop, rock, and rap to regional Mexican, cumbia, and reggaetón. Almost all of the artists were outspoken in their joy of playing for a festival dedicated to Latin music and their delight was mirrored by the deeply receptive crowds.

“These Latin festivals are so important,” said singer Ximena Sariñana in Spanish during a press conference after her set. “It was so beautiful … to be able to play here.”

Earlier in the day, rock trio Wonderfox helped kick off the festival with an invigorating set that flitted from grungy, aggressive headbangers to dreamy, hypnotic alt-rock. Lead singer and guitarist Isabel Valencia performed with an infectious delight, stomping atop speakers and jumping around the stage as she shredded and sang with a measured bite and beauty perfect for the genre.

A few hours later, Latin pop wonder Danna Paola — who also goes by Danna — took the stage for a performance that was spectacular in every sense of the word. She began the set standing alone atop a giant black pyramid in a shimmering golden corset, singing about her tendency to fall in and out of love too quickly. Moments later a cadre of 10 scantily clad dancers burst from behind the pyramid in an explosion of frenetic motion. The dancers carried her and dangled her upside down as she belted, crooned, and delivered impressive, tumbling vocal flourishes over danceable pop beats.

Los Ángeles Azules delivered their classic brand of cumbia that has been making crowds sway for nearly five decades, Saturday being no exception. Their iconic two-beat rhythm seemed to compel the crowd to move: with partners carving space to spin one another, single people engaging in jaunty, articulated cumbia footwork, and one member of the crowd balancing on one foot to swing their crutch to the rhythm.

After a day celebrating the new and the old school of Latin and Mexican music, a representative from each took the stage to close out the night. Junior H, whose singing hits the satisfying sweet spot between croon and whine, brought out his modern take on corridos tumbados. Supported by a skilled band playing stuttering brass, he poured his heartbreak into the microphone.

Alejandro Fernández represented a dynasty of Mexican singing excellence. He’s son of the late legendary Mexican singer Vicente Fernández and father of singer Alex Fernández — who opened the festival. Bedazzled in a leather mariachi outfit, Alejandro Fernández transfigured the crowd into a multitude united in song — with some fans belting along to lyrics, some blinking away tears.

Sunday offers even more delights, including Maná, a titanic force in Latin rock for decades, Silvana Estrada – winner of the 2022 Latin Grammy for new artist for her affecting vocal performance and shimmering lyricism, and Café Tacvba, darlings of the Latin Indie rock wave since the early 90s.

Beyond the two main stages, the festival also features a club, a dancefloor, a silent disco, karaoke, shops, and a spa, along with plenty of food and drink offerings

Beverages offered selections from nearby Napa valley wineries as well as custom cocktails and good old beer, with the addition of Mexico’s delicious Aguas Frescas and Argentina’s high-caffeine Yerba Mate.

Food leaned heavily into Mexican offerings – burritos, tacos, birria, tortas, and churros – with empanadas and ceviche holding down the rest of Latinoamérica and a smattering of fusion and Italian fare rounding things out.

Despite Mexican food’s reputation for being affordable, expect to pay festival prices: a soggy (if tasty and ginormous) burrito paired with an agua de jamaica ran nearly $30 including tax and tip, and a typical entrée sat between $18 to $25 a pop, though several festival goers reported their satisfaction with the crispy fish tacos and flaky empanadas.

Gabby Martinez, was one of those patrons, and between bites of fresh food, she reflected on the warm welcome of the festival and its patrons. “It feels like one of those cookouts where you don’t know everybody, but you know you’re going to get along with everyone — it’s family,” she said. “What I love about this festival is that it brings us together. I hope they keep this going.”
