Rincón, Puerto Rico (2024 Guide) – All You Need To Know

Rincón is a popular destination in Puerto Rico.

The Corona Pro Surf Circuit takes place in Rincón, which is known as “The town of beautiful sunsets.”

After spending 22 years in Puerto Rico and going on my fair share of road trips, I award Rincón the #1 beach destination.

In this article, you will learn all you need to know about Rincón:

– What is Rincón? – Where is Rincón located? – How far is Rincón from the airport? – What is the best way to get to Rincón from San Juan? – What is Rincón Puerto Rico known for? – Can you surf in Rincón? – Is Rincón Puerto Rico nice? – Is Rincón Puerto Rico worth visiting? – Other frequently asked questions

What is Rincón?

Rincón means ‘corner’ which perfectly describes the town’s angular shape pointing into the Caribbean Sea.

image of El Faro de Rincon

But the name actually comes from Don Gonzalo de Rincón.  In the 1500’s, he worked as a butler for Don Tomás de Castellano who was a well-known landowner.

He left his lands to Don Gonzalo de Rincón before he died.

When the town was officially founded in the 1700’s, it was named Santa Rosa de Rincón as a thank you to Don Gonzalo for letting families settle on his inherited lands. The name was later shortened to Rincón.

Check out the video below of Rincón:

Where is Rincón located?

Rincón is located on the northwest-side of the island, next to the towns of Añasco and Aguada.

rincon puerto rico tourism

It covers the coastline of the farthest tip west of Puerto Rico.

Below is a Google Map showing the location of Rincón:

How far is Rincón from the airport?

The driving route to Rincón from Luis Muños Marín Airport in San Juan is just under three hours but completely worth it.

rincon puerto rico tourism

There is also another international airport located thirty minutes north of Rincón in Aguadilla .

What is the best way to get to Rincón from San Juan?

I recommend going to Rincón through the north side.

San Juan is also located in the north, and this route has beautiful views when you pass through the town of Quebradillas.

Below is a Google Map showing best way to get to Rincón:

Friendly advice, avoid rush hour which is from 5 pm -7 pm.

What is Rincón Puerto Rico known for?

Rincón is known for its beaches.

image of an aerieal view of Rincon

Even us locals admire them.

I’m from Humacao, which is all the way on the other side of the island, and I don’t mind the 3 hour road trip.

It’s worth it.

There are about 15 beaches to choose from. How do you know which one to go to? It all depends on what activities you wish to enjoy.

If you want to relax, tan and swim in the ocean, I recommend Playa los Almendros or Playa Córcega. Both have gentle waters and a relaxing ambience.

Friendly tip: bring your own food, drinks, beach chairs and umbrella.

Now, if you want to catch some waves, read below.

Can you surf in Rincón?

100% – It’s known as the capital of surfing for a reason.

image of Playa Domes

If you want to surf like the locals there are a couple of beaches to choose from. These are Playa Domes, Playa Tres Palmas and Playa Marias .

Each one has different characteristics.

The most popular one is Playa Domes or Domes Beach. It’s located next to the Punta Higuero Lighthouse and a Nuclear Reactor named “domes” (don’t worry, it’s inactive).

Playa Domes has hosted surfing competitions such as the Corona Pro Surf Circuit. That’s how tubular it is. After a day of surfing under the sun, you can recharge with the restaurants nearby.

image of Steps Beach, PR

Playa Tres Palmas is also known as “ Steps Beach ” because of the concrete steps that are in the sand (a great photo opportunity).

In the summer, it’s great for snorkeling because of visible coral reefs and marine life.

But, in the winter time, you’ll find the surfers. The waves swell too high for swimmers.

Steps also offers places to eat close by.

image of Maria's Beach

Lastly, Playa Maria is a great option for people who want to learn how to surf.

They give surfing lessons and you can rent surf boards from nearby vendors.

Fun fact, the beach hosted the 1968 World’s Surfing Championship where surfers would camp out behind a women’s house named Doña Maria. That’s where the name Playa Maria comes from.

If you are looking for other surfing spots, then check out our article about the 10 best surf spots in Puerto Rico .

Is Rincón Puerto Rico nice?

Yes! Rincón is a very nice town.

image of couple on the beach

It’s the best place to get away from the pressures of everyday life.

Once you enter the west side of the island, you feel like you’re in another world.

All mellow vibes with no rush. You will be on what we locals call, island time.

image of person doing surfing

Surfing is the main attraction but there is so much more to enjoy, like the local cuisine.

I celebrated my 25th birthday at Rincón Beer Company where they sell their own beers and tasty Puerto Rican bar food.

The plaza comes alive every Thursday night at art walk, and event that showcases local artisans, and on Sunday mornings at the farmers market.

The nicest part of Rincón is the people. They welcome you with open arms and make you feel right at home.

Is Rincón Puerto Rico worth visiting?

Definitely!

Rincón’s sunsets alone are worth visiting.

image of person holding a camera

I worked in a boutique on the east side of the island.

Whenever tourists asked me, “What else should we do on vacation?”

I always answered, “Go visit the west side, especially the beaches of Rincón.”

image of "Welcome to Rincón" sign

Since it’s far from the San Juan airport, tourists may overlook visiting the west of Puerto Rico.

And they shouldn’t.

San Juan is the capital city filled with history, but Rincón is the beach town filled with tranquility, snorkeling, surfing, sunkissed tans, and sunsets.

All you need for your vacation in paradise.

FAQ s ection

Can you walk around rincón.

There are walkable areas in Rincón, such as the town center. But overall, the best way to get around Rincón is by car.

When is the best time to go to Rincón?

October and November are the least crowded, while winter is best for surfing. Late winter and spring have the most sun, and summer is best for snorkeling.

Final thoughts

If you’re vacationing in Puerto Rico, then Rincón should be one of your stops.

Rincón has some of the most famous beaches on the island. Check out our article where we review the 30 best beaches in Puerto Rico .

The drive from San Juan might be long, but the sunsets alone make it worth it.

If you are looking for fun activities to do in Puerto Rico, I recommend you read our article about the bioluminescent bays . Puerto Rico has three bio bays, and this is a once in a life time activity that you shouldn’t miss.

You’ll know you’ve arrived in Rincón – ‘the corner’ – when you pass the sun-grizzled gringos cruising west in their rusty 1972 Volkswagen Beetle with surfboards piled on the roof. Shoehorned in the island’s most remote corner, Rincón is Puerto Rico at its most unguarded, a place where the sunsets shimmer scarlet and you’re more likely to be called ‘dude’ than ‘sir.’ This is the island's surfing capital and one of the premiere places to catch a wave in the northern hemisphere.

Although part of the US, Puerto Rico has maintained its culture and ways of life and thats truly what should be loved about it!  A small surfing town on the less popular west coast of Puerto Rico, Rincón is the perfect Caribbean weekend (or week!) getaway.  Rincón definitely has a vibe!  Come to soak in the tropical sunshine, surf in the warm ocean, drink a rum punch, put your feet up and relax!

If you’re on Puerto Rico’s east coast be sure to Bar Hop around Old San Juan or take a ferry to Isla Culebra or Vieques !

Is Rincón, Puerto Rico worth visiting?

Absolutely! Rincon is located on Puerto Rico’s west coast (opposite from San Juan) and it is a tropical paradise. Rincón is a popular tourist town but you won’t find large hotels and shopping malls here. There are tons of things to do in Rincón. (read about them here )

How to get to Rincón, Puerto Rico

The best way to get to Rincón from the US mainland is to fly into Aguadilla airport (BQN) The drive is then 30-45 minutes south.

Is Rincón, Puerto Rico walkable?

There are a few areas in Rincón that are walkable however, I would highly recommend renting a car. The town is a bit spread out and you wouldn’t want to be confined to one small area during your vacation.

Can you Swim at the beaches in Rincón?

Yes! There are beaches with calm Caribbean water and a soft sandy bottom. (read about them here )

Does Rincón have nightlife?

Also, yes. There are a handful of great happy hour bars as well as nightlife bars in town. Keep reading below to find out more!

Day 1 – What to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico

First things first.  Get your coffee fix at either  Cafe to Go  (my personal favorite) or  Jakes Java  depending on which side of town you are staying on. Ask for steamed milk – its so much better this way!

After grabbing a coffee to start your morning head to one of Rincon’s many bakeries for a ham, egg & cheese on Puerto Rican water bread. Or you can stop by the Wandering Bagel for a NY style bagel.

Rincon, Puerto Rico

For a beach day head down to  Maria’s Beach where you can surf or take a lesson to learn how to surf with an instructor. Pack a cooler for your beach day with beverages and snacks or order lunch at  Calypso  restaurant for a bite to eat & a tropical drink.

rum drink in a coconut

After a solid beach day shower up and head to  Villa Cofresi   for their famous Piratas (coconut-rum drinks!) and  watch the sunset .  One of my favorite things to do in Rincon!

Find out my top places to watch the Sunset in Rincón, Puerto Rico here!

After coconut drinks, head to town and browse local art at Rincon’s Art Walk in the town square. ( Thursday nights only )

Once you build up an appetite for dinner you can choose from one of the many restaurants in town. I love La Sirena for sushi, Gylro for gyros or head to  La Cambija  (just outside of town and one of my all-time favorites) for Puerto Rican food. Definitely get the loaded fries to share… or not to share!

For a fun night out in town I recommend La Estacion or Abajo Bar.

Day 2 – What to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico

Start your morning in paradise with a yoga class right on the beach at  Bare Foot Yoga  or if cycling is more your speed head to  Rincon Ride . There is also a beautiful walking path along the Tres Palmas Reserve but be mindful of the time because there is minimal shade and it gets hot early!

Make a reservation at  The English Rose  for breakfast or brunch.  The view is incredible from up here and the breakfast is so good!  This is a must while you are visiting Rincón.

If there are no waves to go surfing, or you are not into surfing at all, spend a day at picturesque  Steps beach .  Bring your snorkel, mask and fins, Step’s has some of the best snorkeling in Rincón and is located on a protected marine reserve. This is another one of my favorite things to do in Rincon but be careful where you get in and out of the water to go swimming or snorkeling.  Watch where others are going in first before you jump in!

Click here to read about the Top Beaches in Rincón , Puerto Rico!

If you’re full from brunch at the English Rose but need an afternoon snack go into town to Napolitana and grab an authentic Puerto Rican Empanadilla and sit in the town square and people watch.

sun setting with palm trees and ocean in rincon puerto rico - best places to watch the sunset in rincon

Don’t miss an epic sunset in Rincón. Most sunset bars will have happy hour specials. Some of my favorite bars for happy hour are: Calypso and Ola Sunset Cafe .

After happy hour head to  Casa Isleña  (ps- they also have a great breakfast!) for a fresh and awesome dinner.  Casa Isleña is on the Puntas side of town and if it is a Saturday night and you want to go out after dinner walk over to Casa Verde for a few drinks which is in walking distance from Casa Isleña.

For another great family friendly restaurant option I love  Shipwreck  for a nice and casual seafood dinner in the marina.

In the morning while you are grabbing a cup of coffee from Cafe to Go you should also pick up a refreshing açai bowl.  I love adding peanut butter to any bowl!

acai bowl from juice box rincon

Go to  Sandy Beach   for the day to go swimming and play in the surf if it is not too windy (this side of Rincon can get windier than the southern side of town)  If too windy, head to the beach at the Marina where its very calm an you can swim. ( click here  to read about the best beaches in Rincón)

Tamboo  is a great restaurant right on the beach at Sandy Beach.  Come here for a great lunch with unbeatable views.  The Piña Colada here is my favorite!

If you want something more casual  Jack’s Shack  is a great semi-healthy food truck just down the street! The fish sandwich is unreal!!

For sunset happy hour head to  Ola Sunset Cafe   overlooking Domes Beach and watch the surfers down below.

If it’s your last night, and you want something a little special go to  La Copa Llena  or La Cambija at Tres Palmas for dinner.  Both restaurants have lovely sunset views and lovely ambiance.  Listen to the waves crash on to the shore and enjoy an amazing meal with an amazing view.

Hi! Love your blog! We are traveling to Rincon with 3 teenage boys who are not surfers but are very athletic. Any activities I could do with them?

If they’re up for it I would definitely take a surf lesson. Other more active things to do would be snorkeling or stand up paddle boarding. I have a whole post on things to do in Rincon here 🙂 https://trvlcollective.com/things-to-do-in-rincon-puerto-rico/

Hi Ariana ! I’m visiting Rincón and enjoyed your article ! I have my own snorkeling gear and have snorkeled from the shore at steps beach! I see that there are snorkeling trips on a boat available but I’m just wondering if it is any better than from shore in Rincon! Thanks for your thoughts ! Elisabeth

The snorkeling trips will take you to the outer reefs or you can book a trip to snorkel Desecheo island and that is incredible!!!

Starting Your Day in Rincon: Yoga and Cycling

Imagine starting your day with the soft rustle of palm trees and the soothing sound of waves lapping against the sandy shores. Well, that’s a daily reality in Rincon, Puerto Rico . In any case, it isn’t a typical beach holiday. You see, here, you get to kick-start your day with invigorating yoga classes right on the beach—an experience like no other.

Now that I think about it, if you’re more of an adrenaline junkie and prefer something more strenuous in the morning, then how about cycling around Rincon Ride ? This is truly one of my favorite Rincon Puerto Rico activities .

Exploring Rincon’s Notable Attractions: From Sandy Beach to El Faro Park

Once you’ve got your early morning dose of endorphins flowing, it’s time to start exploring what this slice of paradise has to offer. Speaking from experience as an ardent beach lover myself, Sandy Beach is worth a visit.

All things considered; this isn’t like every other beach out there—it has its own charm and laid-back vibe. What’s even better? You can head over to Faro de Punta Higüera or Domes Beach for some sightseeing in Rincon PR.

In any case, do not miss out visiting El Faro Park , one of the prime Rincon PR points of interest that surrounds a historic lighthouse which acts as a mecca for surfers and whale watchers alike.

Immerse Yourself in Local Culture: The Rincon Art Walk and Sunday Farmers Market.

You see, Rincon is not just about its breathtaking shoreline or thrilling beach activities. The town’s vibrant culture is unmistakable. By the way, if you’re an art enthusiast (like me), the Rincon Art Walk on Thursdays is a must-visit. It’s one of the unique things to do in Rincon Puerto Rico that showcases local artisan’s work—an absolute feast for art souls.

Another aspect of Rincon Puerto Rico tourism that I enjoy immensely is the Farmer’s Market held at the town square every Sunday—an interesting chance to mingle with locals and experience their daily lives and cuisine first hand.
