When the Main Tower was completed in 1999, even the people of Frankfurt, who are spoilt by the city’s skyline, were impressed. A high-rise building with a façade made entirely of glass was built for the first time in Europe. In fact, the Main Tower consists of two high-rise buildings that are interlinked with one another. One is square, 170 metres high and the other is a round building 199.5 metres high with non-reflective glass. For the statics of the Main Tower, 112 bored piles (diameter 120 to 180 cm) are set 50 metres deep in the ground. The base section integrates the listed façade of the predecessor building, thus creating a link between the past and present.

This high-rise building is particularly popular with the people of Frankfurt and tourists. It is the only one in the city that has a publicly accessible viewing platform with restaurant. Furthermore, Europe’s highest radio and television studio is located on its 53rd/54th floor.

MAIN TOWER is located in the center of the Financial District and was constructed at the same time like the neighboring Eurotheum tower. Its clear shape and contours give it a majestic appearance. MAIN TOWER was planned by the architects Schweger + Partner and in 1999 it has largely been occupied by Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen ( Helaba ). Helaba is an integrated universal bank with a strong regional focus, selected international presence, and is tightly integrated into the German savings bank organization. The development of the skyscraper was carried out by OFB Projektentwicklung , a sister company of Helaba .

The 350 million euro complex is made up of many geometric shapes, namely circles and squares. The cylinder is the heart of the transparent building, which extends from base to top. A square building having a height of 177 meters (581 feet)  is attached to it. MAIN TOWER rests on more than 100 foundation stones as far as 50 meters (164 feet) deep in the ground.

Up and Down at the Same Time

As early as the planning stage, the architects and engineers who built the MAIN TOWER had to dig deep to come up with innovative solutions for the project. Its proximity to surrounding buildings simply did not allow for a conventional excavation pit, because the load alleviation resulting from the excavated earth from a conventional pit causes the subsoil level on the site to be raised. And this can have a detrimental effect on surrounding buildings. Once this way clear, those responsible took the decision to perform underground construction work under a top cover. Thus, while the excavation pit was being dug, the first few floors of the structure were already being erected above it, and so the tower grew simultaneously in both directions. The extra weight provided by the new stories composensated for the weight of the excavated earth, thus minimizing the increase in the subsoil level.

Parallel Construction

MAIN TOWER was not constructed step by step, unlike conventional skyscrapers. Instead, the individual construction stages were largely completed in parallel operations. Once the shell of the first few floors above ground had been erected, the glass facade was fitted, enabling interior construction work to commence without delay. After the technical, sanitary and heating installations had been put in, attention turned to the offices, reception rooms and common areas. While all this was going on, building work was continuing on the shell above. This resulted in a relatively short construction time of just 29 months.

Environmental-Friendly Design

The curved window facade of MAIN TOWER is unique in Germany and is not just pleasing to the eye, it also boasts many innovative elements. The most important innovation is the windows themselves, which can be opened individudally in accordance with the prevailing weather conditions such as wind, precipitation, temperature, etc. to provide natural ventilation throughout the offices.

MAIN TOWER has been designed as an extremely energy-efficient building. For instance, a part of the tower’s general-purpose current supply (e.g. for elevators and general lighting) can be produced in block-type thermal power stations as a by-product of heat generation. Moreover, cold air can be stored in the ground under the building in winter and drawn up for air-conditioning purposes in the summer. It reaches the offices via a piping system in the foundation piles, coupled with the use of heat exchangers.

Open to the Public

On the top floors are a restaurant and a bar, which are open until late evening. On the roof there is a viewing platform, where you can experience Frankfurt ‘from above’. You can reach the roof by way of one of the fastest lifts in Germany, which moves at 7 meters (23 feet) per second. At the top, there is a widely visible 40 meter (131 feet) high antenna. During bad weather you can still visit the top from the inside.

In the near distance of MAIN TOWER there are many more skyscrapers like TaunusTurm , Commerzbank Tower and OmniTurm as well as the project FOUR FRANKFURT . Unlike MAIN TOWER , these skyscrapers do not have a publicly accessible observation deck.

The behavior of tourists at the leaning tower of pisa, how do super weak relationships affect vacationers' behaviors.

When traveling to Europe, a visit to Italy is a must. One of the highlights of such a trip is Tuscany, and a visit to the beautiful city of Pisa is certainly on the itinerary. The main attraction in Pisa is the world-famous Leaning Tower.

Upon entering the area around the Leaning Tower, one immediately notices the peculiar behavior of other visitors. They comically contort their bodies, and it takes a moment to realize what they are doing.

The other tourists are taking pictures holding up the tower, making it appear as if they are preventing it from falling. Nearly everyone is doing this, and some seem to visit the site solely for this purpose. They compete for the best spot to capture such an image. As a visitor, this initially seems peculiar, but soon the idea of doing the same and taking such a picture of every fellow traveler arises.

Cooperation among travelers

To capture the right perspective, one needs another person to correctly align the camera and provide some directions, like "move slightly to the left; can you lean your upper body forward a bit more..." I wondered how this synchronization of behavior arises and what factors play a role in it.

The most important point is something that has affected everyone. We have seen others and have been influenced by them. After understanding what the other people are doing, we also want to have such a witty and ironic picture. Hence, we simply imitate the behavior of others. This seems natural, especially since the pictures we take this way are not just for ourselves. We immediately decide to send the funny picture to our loved ones back home. Others may also post the picture on social media to share their experience with their followers.

Super weak ties connecting unfamiliar individuals

The behavior at the site itself is nothing out of the ordinary because almost everyone practices it. However, back home, where most people are not familiar with it, others perceive it as an interesting idea and thus participate in the great journey. So, the behavior thrives on relationships: There is the relationship with the person taking the photo, who is usually a fellow traveler, someone we have a strong bond with. Then there are those to whom we send the photos, who are likely to be friends or relatives. On social media, however, the majority are weak connections with whom we share something about our journey. Most important for the situation at the Leaning Tower are the relationships with those with whom we do not have such a traditional bond. It is a purely observational relationship that causes us to be socially influenced and adopt their behavior. I refer to such relationships as Super Weak Ties . It is a relationship that transcends traditional cultural boundaries .

All are equal, but some are immune

Practically everyone at the site is equal, regardless of whether they come from — Asia, America, or Europe. Wait, are they really all the same? No, of course not: The locals, the people of Pisa, do not engage in the same behavior; they are immune to the influence! They perceive the behavior of tourists at best as peculiar. Thus, the influence does not work equally for everyone. One could say that there are structural differences between the two groups, the locals and the tourists. Tourists usually visit the site only once and are therefore compelled to seize the opportunity for a photo. The locals are already familiar with the scene and associate it with something else. Perhaps they are running errands or visiting someone they know. They have different connections to the place and the other people there. One would say that this makes the locals maintain their own kind of relationships with each other, making them immune to the influence of visitors. Tourists, on the other hand, are all there for the same reason and arrive alone or in their groups. Therefore, they are much more susceptible to being influenced.

The spread of imitating others also involves another factor: competition . Some authors, like Pierre Bourdieu, describe this as "distinction," while Harrison White refers to it as the "pecking order" phenomenon. There is a dynamic at play in addition to competition for the best spot for the picture. There is also variation in how the image is presented. Often, it's a competition within the group rather than with others in the square. For instance, people take pictures of someone leaning against the tower or symbolically trying to kick it over with their foot.

The impact of social media

One question remains: Do people come up with the idea of taking a funny photo each day, which other tourists then copy? In other words, is the tower-holding pose reinvented daily and then imitated by others? No, this is not the case, as it is already a well-known image that has been widely shared on social media. For instance, if you search for Pisa on Instagram, you will quickly find tower-holding pictures like this. Many people simply recreate images they have seen before their trip. In essence, they connect themselves to distant people or objects they have created. This also happens to people who have previously visited the place. An anonymous search reveals the photos, indicating that weak connections can transmit the behavior.

Do super weak ties also explain over-tourism?

When these pictures become ubiquitous, i.e., widely known, the situation may even be reversed: It is no longer about an original funny picture; instead, people virtually expect a tower-holding picture to be sent to them as well. What happens in this case is that a local culture develops, greatly influencing people's behavior and transmitted through weak relationships. This is particularly common in the tourism sector, where the effects include complaints about over-tourism, especially in places where a particular photo has become popular through social media. These weak ties could even play a role in explaining over-tourism hot spots. I cover more about the effects of weak ties in my book, Weak Ties: What Holds Our Society Together.

Frankfurt Stadium travel

🙌 Please note: Only official taxis are permitted to access the stadium. To ensure safety, other transportation options, such as ridesharing, are not allowed.

There are no parking spaces available at Frankfurt Arena on EURO 2024 matchdays. Give your wheels a break and use public transport instead!

The stadium has limited parking for coaches or mini buses, which can be booked by fans or by travel agencies. Coach parking passes are free but must be requested in advance via the dedicated online portal. Requests can be submitted until one day before the match.

Don’t drive to the stadium without a coach parking pass as no passes will be available to purchase on the day of your match.

• Please print your pass and be ready to present it to staff onsite.

Coaches: 14 m

Mini buses: 7.5 m

Do not travel to the stadium by car. You can leave your car in one of the many parking lots in and around Frankfurt, for example:

Special services including S-Bahn trains, regional trains, trams and buses will ensure a safe journey home after the game.

These services will will be in operation for all 5 matches in Frankfurt. Regular S-Bahn trains, U-Bahn trains, trams and buses typically run until around 01:00. An extensive night service runs until around 04:30, when regular services resume.
