Steve Stricker does something no golfer has ever accomplished with second 3-peat and dedicates the win to his late father

Portrait of Christopher Kuhagen

Steve Stricker's victory on Sunday at the Sanford International in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was extra meaningful for him.

And not just because the Wisconsin native made history with his third straight win at the tournament, becoming the first golfer to accomplish a 3-peat on both the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. In addition to the 3-peat at Sanford, Stricker won three John Deere tournaments from 2009-11 on the PGA Tour.

The win was a personal year-long quest to honor his dad, Bob Stricker, who died in January at 86 years old .

"This one was for him," Stricker said, fighting back tears in an emotional interview with NBC Sports, after winning a four-hole playoff over Richard Green.

Stricker, 57, in another interview inside the locker room explained how he "put a lot of pressure on myself this year to win one" for his dad, one of his "biggest fans."

"He showed me how to play the game, taught me everything about life," he added. "I owe him a lot, as far as the guy I am, the person I am and then obviously the guy who got me going in the game of golf."

In 2023, Stricker made winning on the PGA Tour Champions look easy. He won six times in 16 events he entered, including three majors . It felt like every time he stepped out on the course he would be raising a trophy. Before Sunday, his last trophy came in Sioux Falls last year.

Stricker's 2024 season showed that it's not so simple and the loss of his dad has been weighing heavily on him, he said. He had nine top-10 showings in 11 events before the Sanford International but had yet to win a tournament.

One of these close calls came at his home tournament in June in Madison when the win slipped away after he was beaten in a playoff by Ernie Els . The tournament ended after Stricker uncharacteristicly missed a short putt.

"I remember trying to win at American Family Championship I had a four-shot lead," Stricker said. "I had flipping tears coming down my face trying to get it done."

On Sunday, he got it done. He entered the final round tied for third and three strokes back. But Stricker started fast with four birdies on the front nine and found himself in the lead down the stretch.

His dad was on his mind.

"Right at the start of the day, you know, that I was thinking about him and just wanting to get it done in the worst way and kind of honor him with a win," Stricker said in a video posted on the PGA Tour Champions social media account. "I was thinking about it right away."

But Stricker thought he "threw it away again" after not closing the deal in regulation. A bogey on the 18th hole and a birdie by Green sent the tournament into a playoff.

Stricker then hit some brilliant shots during the playoff and sealed the victory with an impressive approach shot on the fourth playoff hole that hit the pin to set up a short birdie putt for the victory.

"So happy to just get it done," Stricker said. "So happy to just kind of think about (my dad) through this whole process."

Stricker called Minnehaha Country Club "a special place."

The 3-peat began with his win in 2022 when he also won a playoff. He then had a blistering -16 in 2023 to win by one shot. Stricker also won the tournament in 2018. Stricker noted that the tournament is extra special since Madison native and two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North is the host. Stricker and North are good friends.

"It feels like a home course advantage," Stricker said of Minnehaha. "I love this place."

Steve stricker highlights at the sanford international.

Here are highlights from Stricker's historic victory on Sunday, including an amazing escape on the first playoff hole.

Steve Stricker PGA Tour Champions wins

Stricker's win is his 18th on the PGA Tour Champions, the 50-year-old-and-over tour.

He won three tournaments in his first year in 2018, including his first Sanford International, two in 2019, both of which were major championships, two in 2021, four in 2022 and six in 2023.

Overall, Stricker, who was the captain of the Ryder Cup in 2021 at Whistling Straits , has 30 combined wins on the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions.

Sanford International: What to expect at this year’s golf tournament

Steve Stricker golfing in the Sanford International, a PGA Champions Tour event

By Mick Garry Steve Stricker is the returning champion at the Sanford International and is the only player in this PGA Tour Champions tournament to win it twice.

The 16-time winner on the Champions Tour – who won 12 times on the regular tour – returns as an obvious favorite based on his performances at Minnehaha Country Club , where the best 50-and-over golfers in the world will be competing for a total of $2 million.

His legacy of success travels far beyond the Sanford International, especially the last two seasons. The 56-year-old Wisconsin resident has won an amazing five PGA Tour Champions tournaments during the 2023 season, including three of the tour’s majors.

Since 2000, only Bernhard Langer (seven wins in 2017) and Larry Nelson (six wins in 2000) have won more PGA Tour Champions tournaments in a single season than Stricker, who leads the Tour’s Charles Schwab Cup standings by nearly $2 million with seven tournaments remaining.

No. 2 in Cup standings is Langer, the 66-year-old who won the 2023 U.S. Senior Open this summer for his 46th victory since turning 50. Langer, a member of the Sanford International board and two-time Masters winner, is one of nine of the top 10 in Schwab Cup standings who will be trying slow Stricker down this week at Minnehaha Country Club.

“You look at a guy’s game and if you see that he drives it in the fairway, hits greens and is a good putter – and you don’t many mental mistakes – you're probably going to do OK,” said Andy North, a two-time U.S. Open champion who is a member of the Sanford Health  board of trustees. “That’s how Langer has played for 20 years. Steve is in that same mold. He is going to win a lot more tournaments before he’s done playing. The key is to keep him excited about coming out and playing golf.”

The field will include former Sanford International champions Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Rocco Mediate and multiple-major winners Ernie Els, John Daly, Lee Janzen, José María Olazábal and Retief Goosen.

“The guys really enjoy playing this golf course,” said North, a longtime TV commentator for ESPN. “You have to play a lot of different kinds of shots. It’s kind of like the golf courses that most of these guys grew up playing on tour. It's not one of these 7,800-yard courses where you blast it all over the place. You have to play shots. You have to think your way around this course, something that these guys appreciate as they get older.”

Other highlights include Friday night’s Sanford International Live! Jake Owen Concert at the Sanford Pentagon . Daly, a singer and guitar player in addition to a crowd favorite at the golf course, provides the opening entertainment.

Following Saturday’s second round, the second annual Contest of Champions BBQ presented by the South Dakota Beef Industry Council will take place on the Minnehaha Country Club driving range with live music provided by Jocko Deal.

This year’s free event features five competitors, all smoking brisket for the public to eat and then rate their favorite. The contest is free to attend for all patrons. In addition, the Sanford International will open its gates for free after 4:30 p.m. for anyone in the community who would like to participate in trying and rating the barbecue.

The tournament concludes Sunday with the winner taking home the Sanford International trophy.

General admission concert tickets to Sanford International Live! featuring Jake Owen at the Sanford Pentagon, which include grounds access to the opening round of the Sanford International, are $65. Grounds access tickets, without concert access, for Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Sanford International are $20.

Sanford International stays local for years to come

Tournament brings pga to sioux falls through 2024, celebrates community impact.

author avatar

The Sanford International golf tournament, a PGA Tour Champions event, is secure at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, through 2024.

That wasn’t all the good news about this Sanford Health signature event, to be held Sept. 13-19, but it was a good place to start.

“It helps set this up as a community event versus just a golf tournament,” said Andy North, the two-time U.S. Open winner who has served as Sanford International host since the tournament began. “We feel like Minnehaha Country Club is a great community partner.”

It was the summer of 2017 when Sanford announced at Minnehaha Country Club that it was going to begin hosting a PGA Tour Champions event in the fall of 2018.

Impact on community

The event has since crowned three champions — Steve Stricker (2018), Rocco Mediate (2019) and Miguel Angel Jiménez (2020). It also has raised more than $500,000 for local charities while leaving an indelible impact that extends well beyond the world of sports.

“Sanford’s commitment to the region is pretty obvious with the support they give so many different organizations and sports venues all over the footprint,” North said. “But it’s also important to do something at their home base here in Sioux Falls where they support the community every way they can.”

Economic impact for this weeklong series of events, some golf-related and some not, is estimated at more than $20 million for the Sioux Falls area.

“The members of the Minnehaha Country Club are also members of the community,” said MCC board president Erik Syverson. “We’re very excited to host this event and showcase our club and give something to the community that everyone can enjoy. We were excited to host it for the last three years and we’re excited to host it for the next four.”

It was uncertain late last fall whether the tournament would be held at Minnehaha beyond its original five-year contract. Since then, the partnership has moved forward thanks to a series of productive conversations that included Sanford officials, the MCC membership, and sports marketing and golf tournament management firm Pro Links.

“I think some people see it as just three days for a tournament,” Syverson said. “How can you not do that? But it’s been two-and-a-half months out of the golf season where there is a presence on the golf course. To Pro Links’ and Sanford’s credit, they did a great job of addressing concerns.”

Sanford Health and community support

The result is a continued PGA Tour Champions presence in Sioux Falls made stronger by an emphasis on mutual goals.

“Two things never changed: No. 1 was Sanford Health’s commitment to the tournament,” said Josh Brewer, the Sanford International tournament director. “No. 2 was the community’s support of the event. We had community leaders reaching out daily asking, ‘What can we do?’ Between that support and Minnehaha’s willingness to hear us out, we were able to come to an agreement. We can’t thank their membership enough for allowing us to host this event.”

Presenting sponsor Cambria, the Minnesota-based quartz countertop and surface company, represented another partnership tournament officials are celebrating. The firm sponsors Club Cambria on the golf course and also designs the distinctive trophy awarded to the champion.

Cambria senior vice president of sports partnerships Eric Curry emphasized a parallel purpose involving community and charity. Sanford and Cambria also share a business collaboration that preceded the existence of the golf tournament.

“Our product is completely non-porous so it’s very relevant in health care,” Curry said. “It doesn’t harbor any bacteria, so it’s very well suited for surgical centers and examination rooms. Sanford was already a good partner with us on that side, so the partnership was a natural for us.”

Plus, Curry added: “We love golf, and philanthropy is very important to us. And philanthropy is not the third in line. I’d say it’s 1-A, 1-B and 1-C why we’re involved in the tournament. We’re very excited it’s been extended here for two more years.”

The players themselves represent another grateful group, North said. The continued presence in Sioux Falls is also good news for them.

“The players really like not having to go to another site,” he said. “They love this place. They love the way this course plays, and they love that it’s in great shape every year.”
