Video Visitation

Video visitation is a great way to connect with your loved one over the internet, without having to worry about unpredictable crowds and overly busy visitation hours.

Visits can be scheduled and paid for in advance, allowing you to visit with inmates at times that are convenient for you.

We offer two types of Video Visitation services:

At-Home Video Visits

These video visits can be conducted at home on your PC computer, laptop or mobile device (Android).

Save travel expenses, time, long lines and parking fees with at-home video visits.

Ease stress on children who can now communicate without visiting the facility in person.

On-site Video Visits

On-site video visits are conducted at visitation stations at the facility.

With these visits, you are still required to travel to the facility.

Through our easy-to-use website, you can schedule, register, and pay for (if applicable) the visit in advance. Then, conduct the visit in real-time over the internet.

Please note: These services can vary by facility and are not available at all locations.

How It Works

  • If video visitation is offered at the facility, go to www.gtlvisitme.com . Register yourself and all visitors participating in the visitations.
  • Select the facility where your loved one is located.
  • Search for your inmate, and add them.
  • Click “Schedule” to begin the scheduling process.
  • You will see the cost associated with your visit at the time of scheduling. Enter your credit card or debit card information to complete the scheduling process. You will receive a confirmation email and receipt for your visit.
  • For at-home video visits : sign in to the visitation scheduling site 15 minutes prior to your scheduled visit. Test your connection, and follow the steps to start your visit.
  • For on-site video visits: arrive at the facility at least 15 minutes prior to check-in. A valid photo ID is required. Each facility has its own rules for on-site visits. Please review rules prior to arrival.

Hurricane Beryl maps show path and landfall forecast

By Cara Tabachnick , Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: July 3, 2024 / 9:21 AM EDT / CBS News

Hurricane Beryl  is expected to reach Jamaica on Wednesday after making landfall two days earlier as a  powerful Category 4  storm on the island of Carriacou in Grenada while tearing through the Caribbean, strengthening at times to a Category 5 storm — the  strongest rating .

What is the projected path of Hurricane Beryl?

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the center of Beryl was forecast to pass near or over Jamaica later Wednesday and near or over the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night or early Thursday and move over Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula early Friday.

"Some weakening is forecast during the next day or two," the hurricane center said. "However, Beryl is forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity while it passes near Jamaica later today and the Cayman Islands tonight or early Thursday."

A hurricane is considered major when it's a  Category 3 or higher , with winds of at least 111 mph. As of Wednesday morning, Beryl was a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph, the hurricane center said.

115047-5day-cone-no-line-and-wind.png

Beryl was about 125 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and was moving west-northwest at 20 mph, according to the center.

Beryl became the  first hurricane  of the 2024  Atlantic hurricane season  on Saturday and rapidly strengthened. It first reached Category 4 on Sunday, wavering back to Category 3 before returning to Category 4 on Monday and then becoming a Category 5 later Monday night. It is the first major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to Philip Klotzbach, Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

Brian McNoldy, a tropical meteorology researcher for the University of Miami, told The Associated Press warm waters are fueling Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year.

115047.png

Beryl has also set records as the first June hurricane ever to hit Category 4, the farthest east a storm has ever hit Category 4, and the first storm before September to go from tropical depression to major hurricane in under 48 hours, CBS News weather producer David Parkinson reported.

Beryl was also the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin and was only the second Category 5 storm recorded in July since 2005, according to the hurricane center.

A hurricane warning was posted for Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. A hurricane watch was in effect for Haiti's southern coast and the Yucatan's east coast. Belize issued a tropical storm watch stretching south from its border with Mexico to Belize City. A tropical storm watch was also in place for the east coast of Belize, from Chetumal south to Belize City.

Where will Hurricane Beryl bring rain and flooding?

The hurricane center said Jamaica and parts of Haiti were likely to see heavy rains and life-threatening flash flooding.

"Beryl is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches, with localized amounts of 12 inches, across Jamaica through this evening along with additional rainfall of 4 to 6 inches over the Tiburon Peninsula of Haiti," the center said. "This heavy rainfall is expected to cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides."

What's more, the center noted, "Beryl is expected to produce rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with localized maxima of 6 inches over the Cayman Islands tonight into Thursday. Over the Yucatan Peninsula into northern Belize, Beryl is expected to produce rainfall totals of 2 to 6 inches with localized amounts of 8 inches, along with at least localized flash flooding, late Thursday through Friday."

Video Visitation

Leading Video Visitation Service

Provide the Opportunity for On-Premise or Remote Video Visitation

The GTL VisitMe video visitation solution allows federal, state, county, municipal, and private facilities to supplement traditional in-person visitation service offerings with secure on-premise or remote alternatives. This highly scalable solution can help facilities of any size improve security while allowing staff time to be reallocated to more critical tasks. In addition, friends, family, and professional visitors are given a convenient, accessible way to stay connected with inmates.

With the on-premise solution available through VisitMe, visitation services can be conducted at predetermined locations within the immediate facility or at an established annex location. Inmate visitation stations can be installed at specific locations throughout each housing unit so that inmates do not need to be moved. A visitation station can also be set up on a cart as a mobile solution for restricted classification offenders.

Utilizing the At-Home video visitation solution through VisitMe allows visitors to conduct their regular visitation sessions through most PCs, laptops, and tablets (Android or Apple iOS devices) without stepping onto facility property. As these visitation sessions are conducted in an outside environment, correctional staff members are provided with several monitoring tools to prohibit any illicit activity.

Minimize Inmate Movements

With the implementation of the GTL VisitMe solution, visitation units are installed in strategic locations throughout each housing unit, reducing the need to coordinate inmate movements throughout the facility. With the reduction of inmate movements, the threat of a safety and security breach will be drastically reduced so that staff can be reassigned to other duties.

Securely Monitor and Record Visits

With the security features built into the GTL VisitMe system, correctional officers monitoring the visitation sessions have the capability to record, interrupt, or terminate any visitation for lewd or inappropriate conduct as determined by the facility. For visitation sessions that are classified as professional visits, the system will automatically disable the recording feature, keeping the facility within legal compliance.

Eliminate Contraband Introduction Opportunities

As individuals pass through the lobby of the correctional facility on a daily basis, the threat of contraband being introduced remains a reality. Even without the availability of contact visits, contraband can be placed in an area often visited by inmates or employees. With the introduction of on-premise or at-home visitation, visitors will conduct each session from a secure area, removed from any point that may allow the introduction of contraband.

Video Scheduling

VisitMe Scheduler can eliminate long queues in the visitation area by avoiding the chaos of having a high volume of concurrent visitors at the facility. In so doing, the system also minimizes staffing requirements.

How teams are split when level on points

If two or more teams in the same group are equal on points on completion of the final tournament group stage, the following criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine their rankings:

a. higher number of points obtained in the matches played among the teams in question b. superior goal difference resulting from the matches played among the teams in question c. higher number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams in question d. if, after having applied criteria a) to c), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the remaining teams to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to i) apply in the order given to the two or more teams still equal e. superior goal difference in all group matches f. higher number of goals scored in all group matches g. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points) h. position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings , or if Germany, the host association team, is involved in the comparison, drawing of lots

If two teams which have the same number of points and the same number of goals scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still equal at the end of that match, their final rankings are determined by kicks from the penalty mark, provided that no other teams within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group matches. Should more than two teams have the same number of points, the criteria listed under Paragraph 20.01 apply.

The situation stipulated in article 20.02 of the competition regulations (penalty kicks in case of perfect equality) cannot apply to any of the groups.

How the four best third-placed teams are decided

With reference to article 21.03, the results of the third-placed teams are compared based on their three group stage matches, according to the following criteria:

a. higher number of points b. superior goal difference c. higher number of goals scored d. higher number of wins e. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points) f. position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings , or if Germany, the host association team, is involved in the comparison, drawing of lots

Once the four best third-placed teams were determined, article 21.05 of the regulations explains which third-placed team plays in which tie.

Overtourism Is Out of Control. Here Are the New Rules of Travel.

Post-pandemic travel is surging, and overtourism is pushing popular places to their limits. How can you be a good traveler when some locals just want you to go home?

I was in Hawaii with a group of friends, and a local screamed at us to go home. The island was overcrowded, and while I know tourists can be obnoxious and disrespectful, we were being conscientious. I don’t want to give up visiting the world’s most beautiful places, but I also don’t want to add to overtourism. Can I continue to wander where I want to? —Afraid of Anti-Tourists

I grew up in a tourist town on the Jersey Shore, so I understand the frustration of residents who live in vacation destinations. Each summer I’d grouse as throngs of visitors took over beaches, snarled traffic, and made parking impossible. But their tourism dollars were a boon to the local economy, and the tips I made waitressing during high season helped pay my way through college.

Now I split my time between Colorado and Maui and see how an influx of visitors impacts the environment and longtime residents. Peak season in either place—when it feels like tourists outnumber residents—is maddening, and it turns my typical routine upside down.

The local coffee shops where I sometimes work remotely from are mobbed, so I usually stay home. If I don’t do my grocery shopping as soon as stores open, I have to drive in circles indefinitely, searching for parking. Popular restaurants have hour-plus wait times, so my friends and I abandon hopes of dining out.

The Hawaiian Islands’ most recent Resident Sentiment Survey , conducted by Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, revealed that 67 percent believe their islands are being run for tourists at the expense of locals, and that many feel tourists show a lack of respect for them, culture, and the land. I often bike to Hana, a sleepy east-Maui town with a population of around 700, and I’ve seen residents native to Hawaii set up roadblocks and signs asking tourists to go home. I understand. This was their land.

Locals in other tourist towns have figured out ways of coping. “I avoid the downtown plaza all summer while tourists are here,” says Outside travel director Mary Turner, who lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “I’m happy that businesses are being supported by tourism, especially after the devastating affects of the pandemic on them. But I do get frustrated when I see visitors being disrespectful, like smoking on hiking trails during fire season.”

Kevin Rieke, a longtime local business owner in Leavenworth, Washington, who grew up hiking in the Cascade Mountains, blames Instagram for crowding his favorite trails. But he also sees the positive: thanks to a boost in tourist numbers, he says, the town now has a dozen really good restaurants that residents can enjoy in the slow seasons, and it’s easier for local kids to find jobs.

Global travel has made a comeback, and people are more eager than ever to get out in the world. According to UN Tourism , by the end of 2024, numbers will have returned to pre-pandemic levels. The International Air Transportation Association predicts that air travel this year will reach a historic high, with 4.7 billion people expected to take flight worldwide.

A local of Palma, Spain, holds up a sign that reads "Too many tourists. Too many cars. Too many yachts. Too many bicycles. Too much waste. Too much pollution. SOS Residents."

One of the biggest problems is that visitors continue to flock to the same places, like Venice and Paris, as well as the more popular national parks in the U.S. I include myself in that flock: I still feel compelled to visit places that are now overtouristed, like Rome and Bali. They’re bucket-list destinations for good reason.

So should you stop traveling to the world’s most beautiful places? As a travel journalist, I’m always going to encourage you to get out there and explore. But with heightened pressures on popular destinations around the globe, we could all stand to take a moment to learn how to be a more conscious tourist. Here are my suggestions.

Pay Tourist Fees to Support Local Economies

Travel meccas such as Amsterdam, Iceland, and Bali have started implementing a tourist tax for peak months to help temper visitation. Venice, which has a mere 50,000 residents, incredibly hosts 30 million visitors annually, many of them day-trippers who put little money back into the economy. Which is why, in April, the city introduced a trial fee of 5 euros ($5.45) per day on certain dates through July. The tariff has drawn criticism from residents who feel it makes visitors view their home like a park.

Crowds of tourists pack the streets of Venice, Italy.

The town of Bend, Oregon, recently created a sustainability fund that puts revenue generated from a short-term-lodging tax—paid by visitors—into community-focused projects, such as a bike-park and trail improvements. “The idea is to use the money to address environmental degradation and invest in projects that locals and visitors can enjoy, so you have a social equilibrium that keeps a destination in balance,” says Todd Montgomery, the board chair for Visit Bend.

Paying a nominal fee to protect the places we love is the least we can do.

Expect to Plan Ahead and Make Reservations

The pandemic created a passion for outdoor recreation, and as a result, our national parks became overcrowded. An increasing number of popular parks in America, such as Yosemite, have implemented reservation systems for peak times. At first the planning seemed annoying, but the result is often a better quality experience for visitors and a lighter footprint on the land.

A large group of tourists gather at the Grand Canyon's South Rim to take photos of sunrise.

Learn Local Outdoor Etiquette

Many city dwellers were introduced to the joy of the outdoors during the pandemic, which is wonderful. But some hit the trails without basic knowledge about how to recreate responsibly.

“I’ve never seen more dog feces unpicked up, people going off route and trampling sensitive areas, Bluetooth-enabled speakers blaring out of backpacks, and Disney-like lines on sections of trails,” says Jim Deters, founder of the Gravity Haus hotels, which are located in more than a half dozen mountain towns across the West.

One of Deter’s goals with his properties is to provide visitors a truly local experience by creating an environment where they can mingle with residents—not just be served by them at a bar or restaurant. “We are the local’s gym, coworking space, and coffee shop,” says Deters. Sharing advice tends to happen organically in these settings.

Kayla Applebay, a resident and business owner in Leavenworth, Washington, says she won’t go to the rivers on summer weekends because tourists turn them into tube-clogged waterways. “You see people walking on salmon habitat, leaving trash everywhere,” she says. “Last summer a car caught on fire, and emergency services couldn’t access it because people had parked illegally.”

The town acted. In 2022, it launched a cheeky campaign called Give a Schnitzel (Leavenworth is known for its Bavarian heritage and Oktoberfest) to educate visitors on how to recreate responsibly. It also hired volunteer recreation ambassadors who post up at trailheads or river put-ins and take-outs, fielding questions and explaining rules. “They’ve probably saved quite a few lives by telling people to unleash from their paddleboards on the rapids,” says Troy Campbell, executive director of the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce.

The upshot is: educate yourself on the area you’re going to. What’s happening there right now? What are locals concerned about? Keep up to date with issues by reading local news sites and magazines, visiting a local outdoor store and asking questions, or joining a local group-cycling ride or trail run.

If you screw up, always give a heartfelt apology. In Hawaiian culture, kids are taught Pa’a ka waha, ho’olohe ka pepeaio, nana ka maka , or “Shut your mouth, listen, watch,” says Kainoa Horcajo, a Maui-based cultural consultant. “This is how you can learn how to get along, how to fit in—and how to be a good tourist, citizen, human.”

Book Your Trip in the Offseason or a Shoulder Season

A massive crowd gathers to watch Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.

When you travel during these slower times, not only do you help reduce overcrowding but you’re also likely to have a more enjoyable experience and find better prices and more patient locals, says Amanda Ho, co-founder of Regenerative Travel, a booking platform with a collective of independently owned eco-hotels.

Spring, fall, and winter are good seasons to consider traveling to national parks and other popular places.

A few people mingle around Old Faithful in winter.

Stay and Play with Locally Owned Businesses

When you can be selective with the accommodations, tour guides, and experiences you’re booking, says Ho, it ensures your dollars are supporting residents as often as possible. Many locals’ livelihoods depend on tourism, so avoid big-box stores and chain restaurants in favor of eating and shopping at resident-owned places.

Some Other Rules to Travel By

A female tourist holds a camera up to shoot a nearby bison in the wild.

  • Don’t hold up traffic. This holds true from Manhattan to Maui. When you want to take photos, find an appropriate place for it that doesn’t slow down pedestrian or street traffic.
  • Don’t create your own parking spaces. The lines are there for public safety and environmental protection. In Lake Tahoe, which straddles the California-Nevada border, illegal parking can create erosion and that runoff often ends up in the lake.
  • Don’t use other people’s property as a bathroom. Would you want your kids to see a grown man’s behind poking out of the trees of your yard?
  • Don’t go off-trail. It can disturb flora and fauna and pose safety risks to yourself.
  • Don’t approach wildlife. Not the bison in our national parks or whales or dolphins while boating or snorkeling.
  • Don’t geotag popular natural attractions on social media. It may be tempting to social-boast about your epic vacation, but a viral post can ruin a destination with Instagram-obsessed crowds.
  • Don’t be rude to service workers. They’re employed to make your time safe and more enjoyable. Insulting them is about as inconsiderate as it gets.

Remember That Tourism Destinations Are Fragile

Yes, many economies depend on tourism, but too much of it is bad for everyone. Overcrowding adversely affects both locals and tourists, and in the long run it can ruin the natural beauty that made a destination desirable in the first place.

Todd Montgomery, who in addition to working for Visit Bend is the director of Oregon State University’s Sustainable Tourism Lab (which describes itself as “protecting tourist destinations for future generations of visitors and tourists”), got his start working for the mega-resort conglomerate Starwood Capital Group, where he was tasked with finding the next “it” destination in Southeast Asia between 1999 and 2006.

He and his colleagues would go into rural areas, promising the positive economic benefits of tourism to locals, only to have those areas “burn out” on visitation years later.

Initially, he says, travelers “paid for the culture and nature, but when that became diluted as the result of too many visitors, they weren’t inclined to pay as much,” he says. The visitor experience was negatively affected, but the destination also suffered from some combination of environmental damages, infrastructure wear and tear, and cultural damages, resulting in economic, social and environmental costs.

“Back then we assumed there was always another next destination,” Montgomery says. “If Phuket [in Thailand] got overrun, we’d go farther south. The reality was that there are only so many next destinations. You can’t have a turn-and-burn mentality. You have to protect places.” How do we do that, I ask him?

“It feels cliché,” he tells me, “but it starts with education.”

What would happen to Biden’s campaign cash if he drops out? That’s up to Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden walk through the white columns of the White House colonnade

If President Joe Biden decides to step aside for the 2024 race, Vice President Kamala Harris would be in line to get first dibs on the tens of millions of dollars in his campaign war chest.

Biden has not given any indication he will end his re-election bid after a stumbling debate performance last week. But it's a scenario that was discussed during a tense call between the campaign's aides and donors Sunday.

Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said during the call that in the event of the president dropping out — which she emphasized he had no intention of doing — Harris would then control most of the money in their campaign account, which amounted to $91.2 million as of May 31.

That appears to be correct, according to some campaign finance experts — but likely only if she then became the Democrats' presidential nominee.

“This has this unique twist to it with Harris still being a part of the campaign and being considered part of the campaign from the get-go,” said Kenneth Gross, a senior political law counsel at Akin Gump and former associate general counsel for the Federal Election Commission.

Harris’ name is listed on FEC filings for both Biden’s statement of candidacy and his campaign account’s statement of organization , meaning she would likely be able to use the funds if she continues with the campaign. Campaign finance law also states that a campaign committee designated by a presidential candidate can be used by the party’s vice presidential candidate.

“Both candidates are on the account,” Gross said. “And I would think that she would be able to use the money if she is running for president. She would be the only one that could do that.”

The Campaign Legal Center’s campaign finance team also determined that Harris could access the money in the account if she succeeded Biden as the party’s presidential nominee.

But they noted via email that Harris would only be able to access those funds if she is at the top of the ticket. In other words, if she remained the vice presidential nominee and the party picked a different presidential nominee, that would be a different campaign.

Gross said he was unsure if Harris would be unable to access the funds if she remained the party’s vice presidential nominee without Biden.

“That is such a unique scenario, I would think the campaign would want to seek an FEC opinion on that question,” he said.

Claire Rajan, a former FEC litigation attorney who leads Allen & Overy’s political law group, also agreed Harris could likely access the funds as the party’s presidential nominee, but was doubtful she could do so as the running mate to a different standard-bearer.

If Harris did not become the nominee under this scenario, the Campaign Legal Center’s campaign finance team noted that Biden’s campaign money could be converted into a political action committee. But a PAC can only make a small maximum donation of $3,300 per election to another candidate. The Biden campaign could also refund donors’ contributions, who could in turn donate to a new candidate.

Rajan and Gross also noted that if Biden steps aside, the funds could be transferred to a charity or a super PAC, which would not be able to coordinate with the campaign. The funds could also be transferred to the national party.

this app is trash i am confused how the video visit failed to create over 12 times in a row and constantly this has been going on for months ive complained and still nothing i also dont understand how or why you can deny my verification and im clear as day who i say i am!

I put $25 deposit, never was connected to the tenant in jail, and it keeps asking for money on top of the app not working. Called customer service in India? And they said there was no way they could fix the problem or refund my money. This is white collar crime at its best.

By CMT in PA

App developer should be sent to jail!!

This app is the worst!! If I could give negative stars I would! Poorly written and developed with basically no customer service!! It’s basically fraudulent because they take your money but don’t fix any internal bugs or server errors. I have iPhone12 but also tried on a burner phone.. it connected ONCE then never again no matter what I tried.. kept saying my microphone and camera weren’t enabled even though I zoom all the time for work and all settings on my phone for this app were enabled. Also, the help “advice” for the phone app that pops up is clearly just copied from the website advice ie: “click the lock icon next to the url to unlock your microphone” when on a phone app, that clearly is not applicable. Telmate app developer should be arrested and thrown in jail!! Then maybe they’d fix this app. This is just white collar stealing of people’s hard earned money. They should be held accountable. The jail doesn’t care..and I’m sure Telmate banks on that fact, but as I said, this IS FRAUD and STEALING.. I’m calling my state representative next. I haven’t seen my loved one in over a year because of COVID since visits were taken away. This is cruel and unethical and I hope karma catches up with this company..

This app and the company behind it are the worst. As a application developer myself I can tell this was written very poorly. The navigation is poor, you often have to use browser back button to go to a page because the app or website doesn’t have have links to go back to certain places. The server that hosts the website and app crashes all the time throwing 500 errors. Basically, the app was designed poorly, the infrastructure for the website and app cannot handle the load and we have no choice because this is what the prison decided they would partner with. Their customer service is also terrible. They just try and get off the phone with you as soon as possible. I couldn’t change my primary number and had to call in. The website had already marked my number as the primary but I guess it was not really set as my primary. This prevented me from doing anything because the money I had added was tied to my number (marked primary) and not the other number. The company probably does not care to improve anything as we have no choice on providers.

Doesn’t Work

So sad that this app is being used as our only way to connect with our loved ones in jail. Downloaded it, but have never been able to actually schedule a visit. Contacted customer service, added all the info I needed to, did everything right and it STILL does not work for me! Their conclusion? “Your facility only accepts calls and messages but doesn’t support video visits” um, NO. I called the jail facility and they were surprised to hear that, as that’s not the case and it’s even been working for others! I have an iPhone 12, so is that why it’s not working? If so that’s so ridiculous! Why can’t I use my computer? They force you to download the app on your phone but it doesn’t even work. Guess I won’t be able to see my husband’s face until he gets out. This app needs to be reported and taken down for good. It is so wrong that so many people have had to suffer at the hands of an app that promises results but doesn’t work in the slightest. Blessings
