My Top 5 Charleston Plantation Tours and Gardens

These are my favorite Plantation Tours in Charleston SC, but not in any particular order. They are all worth seeing!

1. Middleton Place

4300 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC

A large limb of a live oak treet swoops to the ground, with Spanish moss hanging on the trees and azaleas in bloom can all be seen on this plantation tour in charleston sc.

Middleton Place Plantation is a historic plantation and garden located just outside Charleston, along the scenic Ashley River.

The primary attraction at Middleton Place is its meticulously landscaped gardens, which are considered some of the oldest — and most beautiful — in America. The gardens feature a wide flowering trees and plants, including camellias, azaleas, magnolias, and an impressive collection of antique roses.

Related Post: Enjoy “old house” tours? Check out the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park NY, a glamorous mansion from the Gilded Age.

In addition to the gardens, this Charleston Plantation tour also features guided tours of the historic house, which was once the home of Henry Middleton, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and his descendants.

Part of the house at Middleton Place Charleston SC that still stands. Its a brick house with brown shutters.

The house tour provides a glimpse into the lives of the Middleton family and their significant contributions to American history. Visitors can explore the period furnished rooms and learn about the plantation’s role in the history of South Carolina.

What I Like : You can definitely spend a few hours at Middleton Place walking the beautiful landscaped gardens. There is also a petting zoo, restaurant, and period craftsmen throughout the grounds.

Plan ahead and leave enough time, because this is one of the most expansive Charleston plantation tours.

2. Boone Hall Plantation

1235 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC

The entranceway to Boone Hall Plantation, showing massive live oaks and blooming azaleas, is one of the most beautiful plantation tours in charleston sc.

Boone Hall Plantation was the first Plantation tour in Charleston SC that I took, so it stands out to me as one of my favorites.

Located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, it is a historic gem that features a long oak-lined driveway that is breathtaking when the azaleas are in bloom.

With a history spanning more than three centuries, this plantation has witnessed dramatic changes, from its establishment in 1681 to its role in the antebellum era as a working plantation.

The mansion itself is not as spectacular as others on this list, but the grounds are impressive. Not built until 1936, the Boone Hall mansion serves as the backdrop for guided tours.

It’s the beautiful avenues of oak trees, draped with Spanish moss, that makes this one of my top plantation tours in Charleston SC.

Boone Hall Plantation also offers a variety of tours to cater to different interests. The “Black History in America” tour delves into the experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants, shedding light on their resilience and contributions to American culture.

They also have a “Gullah Culture” tour that explores the unique Gullah Geechee heritage, a rich blend of African and Southern traditions that has shaped the Lowcountry for centuries.

Additionally, you can explore the meticulously landscaped gardens and original slave cabins.

What I Like : Boone Hall has some of the only original slave quarters still standing, which provides a better understanding of Plantation life. The grounds are also beautiful, especially in the spring.

3. Drayton Hall

3380 Ashley River Road, Charleston, S.C.

Drayton Hall framed by a big oak tree is a three story brick building with a white porch. The roof is red.

Drayton Hall’s history dates back to 1738, when it was established by John Drayton. The plantation played a pivotal role in the development of South Carolina’s rice culture.

My favorite thing about Drayton Hall, is that , unlike many other historic sites, this Charleston plantation has been preserved without undergoing significant architectural alterations or reconstructions.

Guided tours take visitors through the stunning Georgian-Palladian mansion, showcasing its remarkable architecture and details that offer a glimpse into the lives of the Drayton family.

A graphic for joining the Past Lane Travels newsletter with a free download of a travel planner on a yellow background with big red button

Beyond the Drayton Hall mansion, visitors can explore the beautiful gardens and grounds, which offer serene views of the Ashley River and provide insight into the horticultural practices of the era.

Drayton Hall is notable for being the oldest unrestored plantation in the United States that is open to the public. It is a National Historic Landmark that stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Southern plantation culture.

A look inside Drayton Hall, showing a wooden floored hallway with stairs rising on each side and meeting in the middle. The paint on the walls is green.

What I Like: There are some memorable stories surrounding Drayton Hall during the Civil War that I ended up using in my novel Shades of Gray . This makes my list of favorite plantation tours in Charleston SC because of its history and back story.

Book A Tour at Drayton Hall

4. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

3550 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC

The Magnolia Plantation mansion house is a gray building with a long two-story front porch with white bannisters.

I’m not sure I can describe Magnolia Plantation and Gardens . Founded in the late 17th century, it is one of the oldest and most renowned plantations in the American South.

Initially established by Thomas and Ann Drayton in 1676, it has been home to generations of the Drayton family and has played a significant role in the development of rice cultivation.

Treat yourself to a chauffeur, plus admission to Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation, AND box lunch.

What sets Magnolia Plantation apart is its breathtaking gardens, which are among the oldest public gardens in America.

I was lucky enough to finally visit when everything was in bloom in March and it is stunning! The gardens are a blend of formal and informal designs, featuring a wide variety of plant species, including azaleas, camellias, magnolias, and countless other colorful flowers and trees.

Guided tours and educational programs provide insights into the plantation’s history. Visitors can explore why Magnolia has earned the title of “One of America’s Most Beautiful Gardens.

For an unforgettable plantation visit, check out the Kingsley Plantation in Jacksonville, Fla , where an African queen became a plantation owner.

What I Like : I never realized how lovely a swamp could be until I visited Magnolia Plantation. This tour of the grounds includes arched bridges in a wonderland of flowering plants. The beauty is breathtaking, and it’s why Magnolia Gardens is on my list of best plantation tours in Charleston SC.

5. McLeod Plantation Historic Site

325 Country Club Drive, Charleston, SC

The McLeod Plantation mansion house shows 6 white pillars on the two-story white house. The sun is peeking from behind.

This 37-acre plantation on James Island dates back to 1851. It’s now a Gullah/Geechee heritage site that offers an honest look at what life was like for the enslaved and emancipated African Americans who worked there.

Besides the Georgian-style plantation home, the site also includes slave quarters, a cotton gin house, and a Gullah cemetery.

It’s a great opportunity to tour a mansion house and visit the slaves quarters as well. Every tour guide emphasizes a different aspect of life on the plantation.

A one-story white shack with a brick chimney under the limbs of a massive live oak tree.

What I like : All of the plantations explain the contrast between slave owners and slaves, but McLeod Plantation really dives into the complex relationships between the two groups.

I also loved the ancient live oaks at McLeod, especially those near the slave quarters. It’s amazing to think about what those trees witnessed.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens holds festivals throughout the year. Check its calendar for events like the Lowcountry Oyster Festival in January, the Lowcountry Strawberry Festival in March and April, the Christmas Tree Festival in November and Wine Under the Oaks in December. – Lauren Mowery, Contributor

Founded in 1681, Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens is one of six plantations in the Charleston area. Considerably larger than Magnolia Plantation & Gardens , this 738-acre property is best known for its Avenue of the Oaks: a lengthy corridor of 1700s-era live oak trees that form a picturesque canopy over the path leading up to the historic mansion. If the grounds look familiar, it's probably because they've been featured in several films and TV shows, including "The Notebook" and the long-running soap opera "Days of our Lives."

However, while the idyllic property may leave you feeling starry-eyed, its history is anything but romantic. Originally a producer of bricks and crops like cotton and pecans, the plantation relied on (and profited from) the work of enslaved African Americans. Today, visitors can walk through nine preserved slave cabins and watch a presentation on the history of slavery at Boone Hall Plantation to learn more about the struggles that these people unjustly faced.

Most recent travelers said the plantation was well worth a visit, noting the gorgeous tree-lined paths, friendly staff and informative presentations. Visitors also commend the site for the comprehensive overview of the plantation's history of slavery. Still, some felt the prices were a little steep for what was offered while others were surprised to learn the main house was built in the 1930s and was not the original.

Guided tours of Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission costs $28 for visitors 13 and older and $12 for kids ages 6 to 12. Children 5 and younger can enter for free, and members of the military and senior citizens receive discounted rates.

The plantation is located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, which is across the river from downtown Charleston (about 15 miles by car). Admission includes entry onto the grounds and the first floor of the mansion, guided wagon tours (if available), outdoor presentations on slavery and Gullah culture, entry to the slavery exhibits and more. There is an on-site cafe with snacks, drinks, premade sandwiches, hot dogs and ice cream, as well as a gift shop and free parking. For more information, visit Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens' website .

#1 The Battery

Many travelers say you can't leave Charleston without strolling this historic seawall along the city's southern tip, which they call both beautiful and what makes Charleston special. Across the street from the waterfront promenade is Rainbow Row . This clutch of Georgian-style row houses overlooking Charleston Harbor was formerly the heart and soul of the city's merchant and maritime activity. Today, the 13 brightly colored homes attract camera-toting tourists from all over the country.

As you explore this picturesque neighborhood, save time for a break beneath the old live oaks in nearby White Point Garden where several Civil War relics and memorials commemorate the city's role in the battle. Start your tour of the Battery at the 8-acre Waterfront Park (home to the giant pineapple fountain featured on many Charleston postcards), then follow the walking paths on East Battery Street for the nearly mile-long stroll to White Point Garden.

Across the bridge from downtown Charleston,  Boone Hall Plantation  in Mount Pleasant dates back to 1681, making it the area’s oldest plantation, still actively harvesting fruits and vegetables throughout the seasons.  Marked as “America’s most photographed plantation,” upon arriving visitors may recognize the iconic drive lined with large live oak trees. At Boone Hall you can enjoy a walk through the garden, take a tour of the home, or take the coach tour of the grounds. The farm entrance offers fun for the whole family with seasonal festivals, experiences, and events (such as a local favorite, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival). Across the street from the grounds, Boone Hall Farms serves farm fresh food to round out your trip!

A truly immersive experience,  Middleton Place  allows you to “see history come alive” by featuring costumed craftspeople showcasing life on the plantation from the time of its inception in 1738. Deemed “America’s oldest landscaped gardens” and the “most important and interesting garden in America,” it comes as no surprise upon your visit to the expansive 65-acre grounds. Beyond the immaculately landscaped gardens, you can explore the working stable yards full of livestock, the history of the South Flanker home, and learn of the Middleton family and enslaved people and freedmen who served them.

Known as South Carolina’s most visited plantation,  Magnolia Plantation  showcases the natural beauty of the lowcountry through winding nature trails and Romantic-style gardens. Perfect for families, the little ones will enjoy the wildlife petting zoo, nature train, Rice Field boat tour, or the watching countless animals in their natural habitat from the bridges and boardwalks. You can even bring your favorite four-legged friend – dogs are welcome!

Closest to downtown Charleston,  McLeod Plantation  on James Island dates back to 1851 and stands as an important Gullah/Geechee heritage site, “carefully preserved in recognition of generations of enslaved people & its cultural & historical significance.” With not one but TWO oak-lined alleyways leading to the main house, McLeod Plantation is home to McLeod Oak, thought to be 600 years old. Tours can be self-guided or interpretive, and all “focus on the transition to freedom for generations of African-American people who lived at the site during and after slavery.”

The newest in terms historic sites,  Charleston Tea Garden  was originally founded in 1888 in Summerville, but in 1963 the entire operation, including the tea crops, was transplanted to Wadmalaw Island where visitors tour the plantation today. Uniquely, the tea plantation is the ONLY tea plantation in North America (others located in Asia, Africa and South America). If the drive out to Wadmalaw Island isn’t breathtaking enough, the plantation offers trolley tours of the grounds, and the opportunity for a bring-your-own picnic to enjoy under the centuries old oaks.

An important piece of Charleston’s history, each plantation offers a unique experience and the chance to learn of the grounds and people that made these sites what they are today. If you enjoy the historic side of Charleston,  plan a history lover’s trip to Charleston starting with the right accommodations.

A Grateful Come'Yuh Discovers Gullah History in South Carolina

Mt. pleasant’s boone hall plantation & gardens presents black history in america, by colleen troy.

When I moved my family from New York City to Charleston 23 years ago, we were struck by the beauty of the Lowcountry. Its sparkling waterways, majestic antebellum homes and delightful food ways wove marvelous texture into our new life.

We were captivated too by the way people everywhere embraced history. We learned early on that Faulkner was right about the South: The past is not dead. It’s not even past.

And yet, for all the embrace of heritage, there was a yawning gap in the way we were presented a key part of Charleston’s history: there was little talk of the people who carved sparkling rice fields from the swamps, who built by hand those stunning mansions and who skillfully crafted the singular cuisine.

In fact, for generations, visitors to the South could go days without hearing much about the enslaved people who helped create many of the very places they were visiting.

Fortunately this is no longer the case. I was pleased recently to return to Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens and be reminded that this was among the first truth tellers in our local visitor economy. The plantation has helped lead a welcome trend toward interpreting the richly textured lives, loves and enduring contributions that enslaved Africans made to our modern South.

"This was among the first truth tellers in our local visitor economy."

The language of freedom

I can imagine nobody better equipped to tell the story than Veronica Gaillard, a resident storyteller whose gorgeous voice turns from deeply resonant as she introduces guests to “The Blues” to soaring angelically as she croons a hymn. Gaillard is one of a handful of storytellers who daily describe the lives, loves and lore of their people to Boone Hall’s guests.

Gaillard is a gifted presenter of “ trute ” (truth). She descends from the Gullah people, a community formed of multiple West African tribes imprisoned and shipped to the American shores (80% of West African slaves were transported to and through the Charleston area). Living together as slaves on plantations and in cities—or in freedmen’s communities after emancipation—the Gullah people developed a unique language and customs.

Let me pause for a moment to say that as a “ come’yuh ” (that’s Gullah for “come here”—meaning my people weren’t original settlers—vs. “ bin’yah, ” which stands for “been heres” who go back generations), I have heard many stories of enslavement. Many are heartbreaking and harrowing, and all deserve our reverent respect.

My experience on a beautiful spring morning at Boone Hall was just as important, but more nuanced. Performing from the porch of an ages-old slave cabin, Gaillard addressed a diverse audience that included numerous African American students, who’d traveled to the plantation to experience their familial history of strength and perseverance.

Offering a Gullah-laced intro in a fast patter, her tales focused on joy and ingenuity. Gaillard explained that Gullah people invented the first rap. Indeed, the patois of Gullah allowed slaves to speak freely without tipping off their masters.

Other accommodations aided their survival. Hymns sung in the fields doubled as “code songs,” sharing life or death information amongst community members. “Wade in the Water” advised escapees to travel in streams where dogs could not pick up a scent. “Swing Low” signaled that the Underground Railroad was operating and the time was right to flee. References to “Moses” were to Harriet Tubman: hymns about him were really about her.

"The Gullah people developed a unique language and customs ."

A region built by intellect

For many, it was a revelation to learn that the vast wealth of the South was not only dependent upon slave labor, but upon enslaved people’s intellect. Many Africans enslaved in America arrived as artisans, craftspeople, skilled farmers…even cowboys. Their contributions not only enabled, but led to, landowners becoming wealthy cultivating rice (“Carolina Gold”), indigo and cotton.

During the 30-minute session, Gaillard shared other tidbits of Gullah life. It was a “ pribbidge ” to learn about the sweetgrass basket tradition, born in West Africa, and still weaving generations together today. And I’ll take it on faith that a spider web wetted with tobacco juice, when applied to a deep wound, will prevent scarring.

We found that the best way to experience “Exploring the Gullah Culture" was at the end of our visit to the necklace of nine brick structures that housed enslaved people and their descendants for over a century. Today, they showcase frank explanations of the lives lived within and beyond their walls.

Admission to Boone Hall, a continuously working plantation from which everything from bricks to peaches have been coaxed over the centuries, includes the live performance plus tours of the slave cabins, the main house, ancillary structures, and a wagon ride across the entire property. A cafe on the property offers a place to refuel and relax.

Am I “ gwine ” back to Boone Hall sometime soon? Yes, I gwine .
