It should use around 14 amps of power when brewing which means you want to use at least a 15 amp DC outlet, preferably 20 amp.

Three of the portable coffee makers in this part of the review are non-electric.

They don’t use any power to make coffee but do require you to use boiling water. So the main question is “how do I boil water in my vehicle or RV?”

Luckily, there are some decent 12 volt powered kettles out there that are perfect to use with the three non-electric travel coffee makers in the reviews above.

The main downside is all of them are only going to work best with 15 or 20 amp DC outlets.

With that being said, lets get into the best 12 volt kettles and most portable non-electric coffee makers for travel.

Portable 12 volt coffee makers are great, but the ability to boil water using just a small 10 amp 12 volt outlet has a lot of uses.

The Lingyoky car kettle does just that. It can get you up to 13.5 fl. oz. (400 ml) of boiling water in 20-30 minutes.

Yes, that is a long time to wait for water to get hot, but its the trade you get for portability and the option to use a small 10 amp 12 volt outlet.

Many 12 volt kettles can only be used in larger vehicles or RVs with 20 amp 12 volt outlets, but the Lingyoky can be used in almost any 12 volt outlet since most are rated for at least 10 amps.

Because of the size and style, this is the perfect 12 volt travel kettle for semi-truck drivers, boaters, van dwellers, and RVers. You can use the water for coffee, tea, noodles, and more.

It’s big compared to normal 12V kettles and therefore takes a lot of power.

It will take as much as 12.5 amps while heating which means you are going to want at least a 15 amp 12V DC outlet for this but a 20 amp is preferred.

The amp draw is around 9 which means this is another 12 volt kettle that can only be used in 15 or 20 amp 12V DC outlets like the ones found in semi-trucks, SUVs, trucks, RVs, vans, and boats.

The mug is 8.7 inches tall and 3.4 inches in diameter. The water capacity is 22 oz/750 ml. It takes 30-40 minutes to boil water.

It does fit in most cup holders and can be used while driving.

That means you can start it when you’re about 30 minutes from a rest stop and you will have boiling water to brew coffee with when you get there.

The Yarr 12 Volt Heating Mug is a good option if you need enough water to make 2 cups of coffee.

It does have a fairly high power usage and takes a long time to bring water to a boil but if you have the right size of 12V DC outlet and the time it’s a great option.

The 150 watt power inverter will work with a 10 amp (120 watt) 12v outlet, but you do risk blowing the fuse if you plug anything in that uses more than 120 watts.

If you’re certain you won’t ever go over the 120 watt limit you should be fine, but there is a slight risk when using a larger inverter that you accidentally go over.

Many cars have at least 1 15 amp 12 volt outlet, if you can find one of those the inverter will be completely compatible.

I use to have 12v / 120v coffee maker back in the 70s that i use to make about 4 small cups of coffee on my way to my deer lease. What happen to them.

I’m not sure why but 12 volt/120 volt coffee makers are so hard to find. Not many options these days.

She uses it while camping and at home when a caffeine craving strikes. All of the components pack inside the cup and there’s a soft, grippy lid that keeps everything together inside your backpack. Everything is top-rack dishwasher-safe, too. The one drawback is that the small container for paper filters doesn’t close well, and they can slide out. That’s why we recommend the brand's reusable metal filter that’s made to fit.

Freshly ground coffee beans are essential if you’re serious about coffee, but carrying around a grinder to use with your portable coffee maker is impractical.

When I travel, I can’t do without good morning coffee at my immediate disposal. Years ago, I’d hoard Illy instant coffee sticks from flights (still unavailable in the U.S.!) just in case I couldn’t get my hands on a decent cup.

These days, there are plenty of portable coffee makers, but fewer options for espresso, which is why I was excited to try Wacaco’s top-of-the-line Picopresso Portable Espresso Maker.

Right out of the box, the Picopresso felt like a high-end camera lens in hand—definitely more espresso machine than maker.

There are about a dozen components, though they're clearly labeled in the manual. That really helped during the brewing process and with getting it back in the zippered carrying case for storage.

I wasn’t sure I’d have the hand strength to generate pressure required for extraction, which can reach a maximum of 18 bars (the equivalent of 261 psi) on the Picopresso. Not so. The pop-out piston operated smoothly and with minimal effort.

Some other portable coffee makers we cover are designed with an integrated cup, which the Picopresso doesn’t have. While it would be a nice extra, it certainly isn’t a dealbreaker.

We didn’t get our hands on this cordless portable coffee maker, but since it’s from Popular Mechanics reader favorite, Makita, we’d be remiss not to bring it to your attention.

There are so many different ways you can improve your camping experience not only by having enough light but also by having the right light. There's almost nothing more frustrating than trying to move around a darkened camper trying to find something or perform some task, but it is equally annoying when the only light you might have is bright, glaring, and offensive to your eyes, especially if someone is sleeping. Having a blend of bright overhead lights and subtle indirect lighting can ensure you can see when appropriate and set a mood when relaxing. This applies to the exterior as well for the same reasons.

Depending on your setup, you can get strip lights that use 12 volts or 110 volts to run along the ceiling as well as along the floors or under cabinets for all-over lighting that isn't too harsh. Inside, this can be augmented with small spotlights on flexible shafts to pinpoint light for reading or around the kitchenette, for example. Recessed lighting is also always a good choice as are indirect lighting from wall sconces. Anything to make it bright enough with indirect lighting will make it more comforting.
