Aselma Tours to research Italy wine tourism for HORECA customers
Jan 9, 2012 | 2012 Italy , Wine Tourism Conference
Tamara Dubiel, co owner of the Polish agency Aslema Tours , offers her clients exotic vacations all across the globe. At this year’s International Wine Tourism Workshop , Tamara is seeking to expand her wine travel experience (previously focused in Portugal) to Italy! We took a few moments to ask Tamara what drew her to wine tourism and how Italy competes with some of her more exotic locations.
1. What do you hope to gain from the workshops and meetings at the International Wine Tourism Workshop?
First of all – the knowledge of wine producers and how to use this knowledge making trips. Second – knowledge of the Tuscany region, the most demanded by our customers.
2. Your website indicates that Aslema Tours specializes in travel for small groups of active singles. How popular would you say wine tourism is in this market?
As the world becomes more unstable we noticed the group of customers interested only by european destinations is bigger than some years ago. We are doing our best to fulfil these expectations by offering a new travel possibilities. It could be a trip combined with wine & gastronomy, more and more popular combination as well as trip combined with grape harvesting that could be a great possibilty to show the work connected with wine production ( in this case I am mostly interested in small wineries). But – mostly – wine tourism is dedicated for professional groups for tailor – made trips ( restaurants, hotels etc).
3. Your company already offers wine tastings in Portugal. What differences do you expect to see between Italian and Portuguese wine tours?
It’s different country, different wine, different cuisine… = different product for me.
4. Aslema Tours offers a variety of exotic trips throughout Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Europe and the Caribbean. How do you think Italian wine holidays will compete with these more unusual destinations?
As I wrote above, the group of customers for european destination is growing. As we always try to offer something more that hotel, sand & sea I think it will be a new opportunity. And please remember professionals that often travel with us.
5. After the conference, you´re headed to Tuscany from the 2nd to the 5th of February. Why did you choose to explore this region?
To meet Tamara Dubiel and learn more about Aslema Tours , join the 300 other attendees at the I nternational Wine Tourism Conference & Workshop 2012!

15 Best Salem Tours
Best known for the Salem Witch Trials, Salem is a historically significant city located close to Boston. It is a popular day trip location, though fans of history and the macabre might enjoy a longer visit in town.
Whether you are there to learn about the witch trials, revolutionary history, or architectural significance of the city, there are a variety of great tours to help you experience Salem.
These are the 15 best tours and experiences in the city.
1. Salem Witch Museum Admission Ticket
If you are visiting Salem for its key role in the witch trials, this should absolutely be your first stop in the town.
The Salem Witch Museum is packed with interesting exhibits that take on an interactive twist allowing visitors to really step back in time and experience the trials.
The stages where women were trialled have been recreated with voiceovers narrating the proceedings. There are also exhibits depicting the history of witches, and the reasons for the witch trials.
This is a great ticket if you are visiting during peak season as it allows you to skip the lines.
2. Boston to Salem 1-Way and Round Trip Ferry Tickets
If you are staying in Boston and plan on visiting Salem, this is a quick and easy way to travel between the cities.
Likewise, it is also a great option for visiting Boston if you are based in Salem. The relaxing boat journey allows you to take in the views of the harbour from both towns.
If you are heading towards Boston, you can also enjoy a boat tour along the Charles River with this ticket where you can take in the major sites of the Boston Skyline. This ticket can be bought in one direction or as a return journey.

3. The Salem Night Tour
As a town famous for its dark past, a night tour can be a great way to learn more about the haunted stories of Salem.
This tour takes you to the key sites made infamous by the witch trials, as well as through some of the most haunted locations in the United States.
The knowledgeable local guide will tell you about the most well-known ghost stories across the town, as well as the dark history that still shapes the local area to this day. It is a 1.5 hour walking tour, making it a perfect option if you are looking for something simple to do after night falls.
4. 2-Hour Salem History Walking Tour
If you would rather embark on a tour during daylight, this walking tour gives you a comprehensive overview of the history of the city and the important sites around Salem.
Whilst it does take you around the witch trial areas, it also gives you information about other parts of the city’s history. These include the London Coffee House, revolutionary monuments, and even parts of the area’s Native American history.
At 2-hours long, this is a great way to get a general idea of the main attractions in the city. It is also excellent if you are only in Salem for the day.
5. Experience Salem Combo: Two Afternoon Tours and One Haunted Evening Tour
This combo tour allows you to pick the aspects of the city you are most interested and dive a little bit deeper into the history and the culture of the area.
You can choose two tours out of the four on offer – History, Cemeteries, TV and Movie Locations, or Witch Trials.
The ticket also includes a haunted evening tour, giving you three excellent tours for the price of two. The daytime tours are all around an hour long, and the evening tour is around 1.5 hours long.
6. Salem Excursion: Half-Day Walking Tour
If you have a little bit longer in the city, this half day walking tour is a great way to pack in a lot of attractions in six hours.
You will be taken on the regular day tour, as well as tours of the witch trial areas, cemeteries, and historic attractions. Each segment has a different guide, allowing you to hear about the history and culture of the town from experts in each field.
In winter, the final portion of the tour will take place after dark, adding to the spooky vibe of the city. There is a lot of walking involved, so be sure to come prepared.
7. Salem Combo: Wax Museum and Witch Village
The Salem Witch Village was the epicentre for the witch trials, and an important historic district in the city.
Here you can experience the most haunted buildings in the city, as well as see the second largest burial ground in the United States. At the wax museum you will be able to see realistic recreations of Salem’s most notorious residents – including Tituba and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
There is also an interactive exhibit at the end of the museum where you can experience life in a jail cell and make your own rubbing from a replica tombstone.
8. Salem On Foot Walking Tours
This walking tour is a great option for visitors to Salem who are on a budget.
This is a 1.5-hour tour that tries to steer away from the gimmicks of the usual touristy ghost and history tours, instead giving you an insight into the local character of the city.
You will still get the chance to visit the Witch Village, however the guide will tell you about some of the lesser known local stories and myths.
There are two tours to choose from – one in the afternoon and one in the evening. These allow you to pick what kind of experience you want, as well as tailor it to your own itinerary.
9. Salem Ghost Tour
This is another great ghost tour, with a slightly more authentic twist.
Rather than focusing on the more popular folklore, this tour takes you around the haunted sites in the city and tells you about the lesser known facts of hauntings in Salem.
The tour is very well researched and aims to break many of the misconceptions surrounding Salem and its history.
There are two options depending on how long you would like your tour to last. All tours will take you to at least eight locations, and the longer two takes you to another four for some more off-the-beaten path experiences.
10. Witch Dress-Up Photo Experience in Salem
For the ultimate souvenir of your time in Salem, this experience is very well produced. You will be given a personal stylist to help you find your inner witch or wizard as you select from their wide range of costumes and props.
This also allows you the opportunity to learn more about the folklore surrounding witches and consider your own place in history.
A professional photographer will then take your photo against a series of well-designed backdrops, and you will be provided with a wide range of photos to take home.
11. Salem Christmas Krampus Tour for Adults
Christmas doesn’t have to just be for kids, and this tour is a great experience for adult groups visiting Salem during the holiday season.
Taking on a Krampus theme, this tour allows you to explore the pre-Christian winter solstice traditions that shaped modern Christmas celebrations, and were directly intertwined with local fears about witches.
You will learn about Pagan rituals, and the importance of the solstice to followers of the religions associated with Paganism.
12. Magic Lantern Tour
This is an excellent experience if you are visiting the city around Halloween. The experienced guide brings life to this night time tour, where you can learn about the city’s dark past and the pagan rituals that shaped the local area.
As a special Halloween twist, you will also be treated to a Magic Lantern show along the way as historic and witch-themed images are projected along the walls of the route.
This is a great tour if you are looking for something a little more interactive.
13. Black Cat Historical Day Tour
No witch would be complete without their black cat, and this tour is a great way to delve even further into Salem’s witching history.
It also allows you the chance to learn about the pirates and religious figures that shaped the city, as well as its involvement during the revolutionary period. This is an unscripted tour, so is usually customised to the wishes of the group.
It also focuses on some of the less crowded areas of Salem, giving you a more intimate experience with the tour group.
14. Historic Overview of Salem Walking Tour
This is another excellent option if you are on a budget, particularly if you are interested in getting a more general overview of the history of Salem.
You will not only learn about the witch trials but be taken through four centuries of history that impacted the city.
At only an hour long, it is a great starting point for your time in Salem, allowing you more free time to explore the spots that interest you most after the tour.
The tour also takes an interactive approach, inviting guests to actively participate.
15. Historical Salem Cemetery Walking Tour
If you are more interested in the people who shaped the city, this tour takes you through the oldest cemetery in Salem.
You will learn about the stories of the famous residents that were buried here and get an up-close look at their place in the history of the city.
Like the historic overview tour, this tour is very interactive and invites audience participation in the stories being told.
It is one hour long, which is perfect for making your way around the cemetery and understanding the context of the most visited tombstones.

Salema Village: The Ultimate Guide to Salema, Portugal [2024]
Salema is a beautiful fishing village based around a fantastic bay in the West Algarve of Portugal. While much of the central coastline of the Algarve has seen heavy development, the west remains relatively unspoiled. Among its cliffs and beaches, you can find an array of villages and towns perfect for day trips.
One of these tiny towns is Salema, a small town with a long history as a fishing village. Although, the hillsides surrounding the town are dotted with holiday homes and accommodation, Salema still has its traditional fishing village at its heart. Central to the beach is the boat launch, where you’ll often see fisherman tending to their boats or their nets. Along the small streets you’ll find cafés, bars and cosy restaurants. For the active there’s some stunning clifftop walks to really get a feel for the west Algarve.
How to find Salema?
Salema is just 20km or around 20 minutes by car from Lagos . The tiny village sits just a couple of minutes off the N125 that runs across the Algarve. It makes it a great stopping point for people travelling to Sagres , or Cabo de São Vicente .
If you don’t have private transport, then the only public transport is the local bus services operated by EVA , now under the brand of Vamus . The only bus route currently departs from Lagos to Sagres (No.47). You can view the full routes and schedules on Vamus’s website. A single ticket is €2.80 and a return ticket is €5.60. Lagos is accessible to the wider Algarve by both regional bus and train service .
What to see and do in Salema?
Once you’ve arrived in Salema, you’ll find its really very small and centred around that beautiful bay. You’ll most likely arrive into a lively square. It’s actually a car park that’s surrounded by café’s and leads directly on to the beach. Follow any of the steep cobbled streets that lead on to this square and you’ll find more cafés and bars. If you find the central parking full, the additional parking is clearly marked.
Salema’s Beach: Praia da Salema
Salema and Praia da Selema are usually referred to as the same place, either because it that small or because it’s that focused on the beach! The kilometre long beach, with its fine golden sand, repeatedly gets Blue flag certification year after year. This means the beach meets exceptional standards for water quality, beach access, and family safety.
The small bay means the waters are relatively sheltered, as the waves are small, the surfers prefer to go elsewhere in the west Algarve! With a gently sloping and clean beach, it’s great for families and young swimmers. Even at high tide, Salema’s beach has a wide strip of sand for you to relax on. The main thing to consider is the sea water itself, they can be unexpectedly cold for people not used to Atlantic swimming!
Salema’s Beach Facilities:
As a popular and family focused beach, Praia da Salema offers all of the usual beach facilities. The beach is life guarded during the summer season, and there’s an array of sun lounger and parasol rental services. There’s toilet and shower facilities and an array of cafés, bars and restaurants with beach views for refreshment. People seeking more activities can also find bodyboard, kayak and stand-up paddle board rental near the beach. Or lessons and tours can also be arranged.
Dinosaur Tracks of Salema: Dinosaur Footprints
At either end of Praia da Selema are the typical gold and orange limestone cliffs typical of the Algarve. Some of the oldest sections actually date to the Lower Cretaceous period, so they’re around 150 million years old! It is among these layers of limestone rocks that fossil hunters can be rewarded with the remains and fossils of marine life, and even dinosaur footprints.
On the western end of the beach is where these are most visible. At low tide you might have to scramble up some rocks. Or you can reach them from above by a nicely maintained set of stairs at the cliff top. You can find a large shelf like platform among the rocks with several different dinosaur footprints. These footprints were ‘discovered’ by archaeologists and geologists from the University of Lisbon in 2001. Although if you ask the locals, they’ll tell you they always knew there where the dinosaur tracks were hidden!
The clearest set of dinosaur footprints are located on a shelf a few steps west from the staircase. They’re relatively easy to spot and form a line several meters long. It’s believed from the size and shape of the footprint that they belonged to a herbivorous biped called an Ornithopod. The name Ornithopod comes from the Greek for ‘bird-foot’ and from the footprints you can see the characteristic outline of a three-rounded-toed dinosaur. If you chat to the locals, they’ll tell you there are plenty more remains to find among the rocks, shelves, and hidden beaches of the coastline!
Cliff Walks: Hiking in Salema
For the more active Salema has access to some incredible cliff top walks in both directions. The first is from the cliff top where the stair access is. If you follow a small track west from here, you can walk and find two deserted beaches of Praia Santa and Praia da Figueira. Outside of peak season its rare to find these occupied as the only way to get there is to walk along the cliffs and through the scrub. The walk isn’t clearly marked by signposts but is easily followed by the dusty trails that you can see on Google Maps.
The second and perhaps more impressive hike is to head east along the coast through the Boca do Rio nature reserve, and on to Praia da Boca do Rio. It’s a smallish hike of 2.5km but offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline. It can be extended by hiking from Praia da Boca do Rio to the Fort of Almádena up on the cliff side.
Boca do Rio Nature Reserve
If you drove to Salema, it’s possible you drove through a small valley between the towns of Burgau and Salema. This small valley actually forms the Boca do Rio Nature Reserve which is a small wetland created by two streams meeting and draining towards the beach of Praia da Boca do Rio. Due to the valley’s proximity to the coast, it’s a haven for many migratory birds to stop and feed in.
On Praia da Boca do Rio there are no beach facilities other than a few picnic benches and rubbish bins. Due to its location outside of both Burgau and Salema it’s a popular camping spot for an array of campers, campervans and caravans.
Forte de Almádena – Fortress of Almedena
Forte de São Luís de Almádena to give its full name is a 17 th century fort located on the cliffside above Praia da Boca do Rio. The fort was completed in 1632 and served to protect the coast and the valuable tuna fisheries from pirates and privateers. In addition to being defensive, it was also an important strategic point along the southern coastline of the Algarve. Essentially a midway point between the Fortress of Sagres and the town of Lagos.
From its cliff top position, it offers views from Sagres all the way to the bay of Lagos. The oldest drawing of the fort from 1754 reveals the original polygonal plan, with lower and higher batteries at the rear of the fortress. Both of which would have been armed with cannons. At the front of the fort were two bastions, a moat and a drawbridge.
It was abandoned by the military in 1849, and transferred to the local municipality in 1946. Unfortunately, it is now in a pretty bad state of degradation and only seems to be getting worse. Many of the outer walls have collapsed, and the lower battery is missing completely. From the front, its main armoury gate, walls and moat survive. As do the barracks, and several vaulted rooms, one of them believed to be a chapel. It has a small car park and an informational post. It’s free to park and explore if you don’t fancy the walk.
Somewhere to Stay in Salema?
Salema is a small village but is has several great options if you’d like to stay. Hotel Residencial Salema is a favourite of ours. it’s a simple hotel that offers great breakfast less than 50m from the sea! You can find the full list here that has a range of budgets .
Top Tours and Activities in Salema
If you’re looking for some tours and activities to do around Salema then look no further! You’ll find trips to explore the rest of the west Algarve, and tours inland. Here’s a few ideas!
Should you visit Salema, Portugal?
Salema is perfect for a day trip in the West Algarve , or a stopping point to take in some sea views and a fish lunch. Unless you’re looking for a truly relaxing and family friendly beach break, you may want to look elsewhere for longer stays though!

We loved Salema.
We were there in December a few years ago.
We stayed for three weeks while living in Prague.
It was lovely and we can’t wait to return.
It’s certainly a special place! Can’t wait until we head back either!
I stayed with a family right on the beach ,in their home . Had my bedroom, shower .All for $10 A night .OH what a great memery . i Would be woken up early by the fisher men bringing their catch in .A tractor would bring the boat in onto the sand . The locals would then come down to buy the fish . Next the baker would deliver hot bread ,pastrys by truck . SOOO wonderful to visit Salema 20 YRS ago .The people in the village were wonderful . The couple who had a dine in pizza shop were so friendly,,not to mention ,,ive never tasted pizza as yummy since then . IM from AUSTRALIA, god ony knows how i found Salema , if i could choose anywhere to go back to in the world,,it would be Salema . IM now 76 yrs old . xx
Those sound like fantastic memories Jan, it seems like Salema has kept the same spirit and is still very traditional at heart today. We loved the local bakery, and the fresh fish in the restaurants! Thank you for sharing with us!
We will be arriving in Salema Friday March 17th until April 3rd 2023. Arriving Lisbon from Toronto then driving down to the Algarve. Staying at the “Nau Salema Beach Village” we are really looking forward to our stay in the Algarve region. From all we have seen & read it looks great, want to experience the friendly people – history – culture – coast – and especially the food. Weather forecast doesn’t look to promising for next weeks but better than snowy Ontario. Can’t wait to get on the plane tomorrow 😎 😊
Sounds like a fantastic trip, let us know how you get on and what you think of this beautiful area!

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

Witch City Broom Making Workshop
We had a brilliant tour with Dawn on a very, very rainy night, Monday 9/11. The content of the tour was interesting, it gave me a very good overview of Salem’s history. The tour was more history than hauntings in my opinion. Dawn really brought the stories to life and was very generous with her time and encouraged the group to interact and ask questions.
I am a long-time resident of Salem and had forgotten how amazing our town is, thank you Violet for awaking my interest in Salem's history again! Violet is a fantastic tour guide, and our group is extremely impressed by her. Violet spoke well, charming and is clearly knowledgeable. She was able to change a muggy dreary rainy night into very pleasantly memorable evening.
During a day trip to Salem, I participated in the History and Hauntings tour provided by Witch City Tours. This walking tour was so informative and beautiful! Our tour guide, Michael, knew quite a bit about the history of Salem and the witch trials. His summary of Salem's dark past piqued our interest into learning more about it, which led to the purchase of a history book in a local shop.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.
Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.
This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.
Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.
The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.
A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.
Nizhny Novgorod
This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.
Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.
Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.
This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.
Saint Petersburg
If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.
Cocktails with the Captain
Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.
Matryoshka doll painting
There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!
Superb Service & Dining
Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.
Meet the Professor
From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.
Beginner’s Russian
The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.
Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting
All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!
Russian Cooking Class
A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.
Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital
Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR & TAKE THIS TOUR!
This tour is an absolute must if you want to learn more about the people and events that made up the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Sarah was the best tour guide I have been lucky enough to follow. She was incredibly knowledgeable, entertaining, and passionate about the history she was sharing. She reminded us that the victims of the witch trials were just that - victims, who had lives, families, and who leave legacies after them. I learned more in this hour and a half than I could have hoped to in a history class!
