2003 Chrysler Voyager Review

2001 Chrysler Voyager LX 4dr Minivan

Has Your Car's Value Changed?

Used car values are constantly changing. Edmunds lets you track your vehicle's value over time so you can decide when to sell or trade in.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Surprisingly agile handling, quiet ride for V6 models, low price.
  • Some cheap interior bits, limited features and options, reliability record not as strong as some competitors.

Chrysler has reorganized the lineup, eliminating all "base" models as well as the four-cylinder-only "eC" model (extra-cheap?). Now there's only one trim level, LX. If you stick with the base Value Package, you'll get the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. If you opt for the Popular Equipment Package, you'll get the 3.3-liter V6. Mercifully, Chrysler has done away with the archaic three-speed automatic formerly available on four-cylinder models. New exterior colors include Satin Jade and Butane Blue.

Edmunds says

Enjoyable to drive and ride in, the Voyager offers no-frills minivan transport for the family on a tight budget.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2003 Chrysler Voyager LX Value 4dr Minivan (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.56 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Speedometer question - 2003 Chrysler Voyager

  • Add to quote

My wife was driving home from Tenn. Sunday and she called me and said that the speedometer dropped to 0. When it did this she was going about 70. Said she let off on the gas, the speedometer went back up to about where it was at then she accelerated again. No problems since. The battery is fine and has not been disconnected in at least 6 months. I read here about getting the codes out of the computer and did that. I got the following - Sof 5.2 E 400.1 End codes Research found that 400.1 is improper shut down but the car had been running for a couple hours when this happened. I am going to pull any codes Monday if my computer interface is working and see if anything else is going on. Anyone else have any ideas? Wouldn't ya know this would happen just before emission check time! :eekkkk:

Could be a bad output speed sensor.

velocimetro voyager 2003

E 400.1 sounds like an instrument cluster/databus test code. I would bet the Sof 5.2 is just the software version loaded. You need to read the OBD engine management codes. Turn the key from off to run (not start) 3 times leaving it in run. 4 digit codes will show up on the odometer readout starting with "P". You could always head to Autozone and have them read the codes with a scanner. It's free. Andyg may be spot on. The output sensor is the source of the speedo indication. Usually though, if it fails you'll also see simultaneous transmission shift issues. Not sure the wife would have had a chance to experience that though.

It may have never been able to hit limp mode either if the van didn't slow enough into the "safe" range of speed. The trans will not jump into limp mode at 70mph, it will wait until you're at least around 50mph.

I will check the engine codes and see. I would think if the speed sensor was faulty that it would either give erroneous readings or quit completely - which would also cause transmission shift problems. She said that when the speedometer started reading again, it returned back to 70 MPH.

Chrysler Voyager

2003 minivans & 3-row suvs reliability, crash and rollover tests, chrysler vs. other new car brands, owner reports, 2003 minivans 3-row ratings.

  • 2.4-liter 4 (150 hp)
  • 3.3-liter V6 (180 hp)
  • 4-speed automatic

In most cases, automotive warranties are based on the vehicle identification number (VIN), and the warranty will be valid regardless of ownership. The dealership can tell you exactly how much warranty is left.

The Voyager, and its twin the Dodge Caravan, was redesigned for 2001. Although engine power increased, acceleration remains lackluster and fuel economy unimpressive with the popular 3.3-liter, 180-hp V6. A harsh and unresponsive 2.4-liter, 150-hp four-cylinder, shared with the PT Cruiser, continues as the base engine. Powertrain shortcomings aside, the Voyager rides fairly comfortably, and its handling is secure. The third-row seat is a handy 50/50 split bench that's fairly easy to remove, though not as versatile as some competitors' fold-into-the-floor designs. An entry-level eC model joined the lineup for 2002. Optional power-adjustable pedals were also added.

Chrysler brought back the Voyager in 2020 to split its minivan offering as a lower-cost version of the Pacifica. The Voyager takes over for the L and LX trim levels, which account for about a third of Pacificas sold, thereby offering a more affordable entry into the minivan line. It uses the same 3.6-liter V6 engine as the Pacifica, matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission. That combination delivers good power in the Pacifica, where it returned 21 mpg overall. The Voyager does not offer key advanced safety systems, such as forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking. At least, blind spot warning is optional.

All Voyagers became Chryslers since the Plymouth brand was phased out. The Chrysler Voyager/Dodge Caravan twins are still competitive. They ride fairly quietly and handle reasonably well. A handy second, left-side sliding door is optional, but power operation isn't offered. The 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 is the engine to choose. Other engine choices are a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6. The front seats provide decent support. The middle and rear seats are easy to unhitch for maximum cargo room. They're very heavy, but small wheels make them easier to move.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
